L. C. GRATON, professor of geology in Harvard University, addressed the New York Section on April 24 on-his impressions of the Rand. His beautifully clear and concise address was delivered without notes, so that what follows is merely a resume of the principal points made. The world is apparently coming to the end of ore discoveries easily made, yet we need metals at a steadily increasing rate. If surface discoveries are to decline, then we must find other ores or use less metals. The probable chances of finding ore are greater in the centers of big production than in new districts, as proved statistically. It is unsafe to say that a field is worked out. Therefore, deep mining holds possibilities and is an interesting study that will progressively gain in importance. The origin of the gold in the banket of the Rand has been a geologic football for a long time. Of the various theories, two have survived: 1. Infiltration into permeable conglomerate beds from deep-seated sources; 2. the placer hypothesis, which holds that gravel beds originally had the gold in them. At present, the second theory is accepted by the majority, as a result of the studies by the Union Geological Survey and by E: F. Mellor which were published about fifteen years ago.

Perry. vice-president of the Turner Construction Co. and prominent civil engineer of New York City as its new Chairman. He succeeds C. F. Scott, who becomes Chairman of its Committee on Professional Recognition. S. L. Tyler, Secretary of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, succeeds A. B. Parsons as ECPD Secretary. R. E. Doherty is Vice-chairman. C. E. Davies remains as Assistant Secretary, as do R. L. Sackett as Chairman of the Committee on Student Selection and Guidance, O. W. Eshhach as Chairman of the Committee on Engineering Training, and Karl T. Compton as Chairman of the Committee on Engineering Schools.

TWENTY FIVE years of doing, finding, and encouraging others to do scientific research in' industry, and of organizing the machinery for the` smooth 'and effective conduct of such research, have left me with a feeling that so far as this branch of human activity is concerned the problems in 'essence are- not, materially 'different from those met elsewhere. Years ago, in a less mature period of life, I may have thought that the effective industrial research man was a being somewhat different from his fellow workers in adjacent 'fields, but I have long since 'changed my views. The rank and' file of the modern industrial research organization are relatively easy to find, though some¬times difficult to get in sufficient numbers. Mistakes in choosing them are not particularly serious to the or¬ganization, however unfortunate they may be for the misplaced individual who persists too long in the wrong environment. The reason for this is obvious from the fact that, taken by and large, the work of the rank and file is at best necessarily a work of detail done under guidance of the more experienced. In this respect the situation of the rank and file in an industrial research organization is not different from that class in any other group activity, whether concerned with industry, the university, or the church. This does not mean, however, that we are not all anxious to have the best possible material obtainable in the rank and file, or that we are indifferent to the utmost of encouragement and stimulation to its individual members.

CLIMAX is situated in the heart of the high Rockies at Fremont Pass on the Continental Divide. This setting naturally throws some of the romantic aura of the old mining camps around the town. In its early days it was much like them, even to its air of impermanence. Its founders had faith in the future-as did every adventurer who started a hole in the ground and called it a mine. In those days, however, all available money was expended on the mine, and those who labored on the job had to he content with rugged living arrangements. The visitor at Climax today. however, sees a townsite carefully laid out to enhance the natural' beauty of the surroundings. There are 250 houses and 43 apartments which have been carefully designed by an architect, and missing is the long line of houses of the same type. Every house is of a different design, all being modern in every respect, with haths, running water, electricity, and .sewage disposal. They vary in size from three to six rooms and rent for $5 per room per month. A complete, well-designed water-treatment plant supplies water for domestic purposes.

ALTHOUGH many persons know that a lot of type metal and etchings are used in the U. S. Government Printing Office few would expect to find anything on metals in the annual report of the Public Printer, George H. Carter. Yet the report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1931, contains many interesting items. For example: Among the 57,500,000 lb. of materials and supplies delivered to the printing office was little new metal, but the metal in circulation is 6,000,000 to 7,000,000 lb. In the cost of production $31,523 is charged against metal, nearly one-third for salaries and wages. In miscellaneous sales were $4,696 from waste metal and $1,147 from waste gold (from books). Electrotype and stereotype covered 11,438,314 sq. in. The vaults and storage rooms contain 1,700,000 plates and 130,000 pages of type containing 4,600,000 lb. of metal valued at $275,000. In what was known as the Congressional Globe vault were 46,000 stereotype plates; these were salvaged by remelting for other platemaking service. (communication to the Secretary): In the comparative tests reported by Mr. Tays, the stamp-batteries were provided with various styles and mesh-sizes of screens, while the Bryan mill was run throughout with a slot-punched Russia iron, equivalent to a 30mesh wire screen. This is a somewhat onc-sided method of comparison. Should not the Bryan mill also have had the chance to show what it could do with other screens? I cannot wholly approve Mr. Tays's proposed improvements upon the Bryan mill. In my judgment, the inventor has given us a machine well-adapted to the work for which it was designed, namely, the crushing and amalgamation of soft ores. In my judgment, the principal cause of failure to amalgamate satisfactorily in the Bryan mill is not, as Mr. Tays thinks, the shallowness of the basin, or the lack of copper plate about the inside periphery of the mill, but rather the want of experience and practical knowledge on the part of most amalgamators. Having had experience, not with one Bryan mill only, but with several, and taking into consideration the experience of other capable mill-men, I am positive that the proper way to save gold ill this mill is: first, to use enough quicksilver to keep the amalgam liquid, thus allowing it to accumulate in the annular space between the dies and the rims of the basin; secondly, to replace the old dies, when a little more than half worn-out, with new ones; and, thirdly, to clean up the mill at least every two weeks—or oftener, if rich ore is being treated. It is evident that Mr. Tap endeavored to amalgamate quite " hard," as is done in a stamp-battery, in which case the swash of the pulp would scour off portions of the hard amalgam adhering to the inside plates and dash it through the screens— after which a considerable amount would be lost through floating on, or in, the pulp in its journey over the outside plates, and

Johnson, Jr., The innovation of a special meeting under the auspices of the Iron and Steel Committee was well justified, if we accept as a criterion the number of papers presented at the meeting held on Oct. 16 and 17 in New York and the attendance at that meeting. Twenty-four papers were read, and most of these were widely discussed orally, while doubtless the written discussions will be even larger in extent. Discussions will be received up to Dec. 1, 1913. The attendance at the meeting of 106 members and 75 guests is an evidence of the wide anti growing interest in the Institute of men interested chiefly in iron and steel. It is especially interesting to note this large attendance at a meeting where very little of a social nature was introduced into the program. An informal dinner for the men at the Engineers' Club closed the meeting. At this dinner were present about 70 members and guests. One of the Vice-Chairmen and the Secretary of the new Committee on Petroleum and Gas told of the important plans in prospect of that Committee. Brief impromptu speeches by a considerable number of the members and guests were enjoyed. Professor Marburg reiterated his previous assertion that he believed that the Institute and the American Society for Testing Materials, as well as some of the other technical societies, were all fighting for one good cause; that there was room in the field for all of these societies with their various points of view; and that they should march shoulder to shoulder. The success of this dinner was due largely to the efforts of Mr. Johnson who had the affair in charge.

Since the Third Theory of Comminution was presented eight years ago (I) it has found increasing use in crushing and grinding problems. The practical utility of its wok index equation is quite generally acknowledged (2). However, its theoretical basis has been questioned in at least three technical articles (3) (4) ('). The purpose of this paper is to present experimental proof that it is scientifically correct. Particles under compressive stress are strained and deformed. They absorb strain energy, and when this locally exceeds the breaking strength, a crack tip forms. The surrounding strain energy flows to the crack tip, which rapidly extends and splits the rock, releasing the strain energy as heat. The initial energy flow causes additional crack tips in highly strained areas. If the compression is rapidly applied by impact, crack tips may form before the strain energy has reached equilibrium in the particle, thus decreasing the total work input required for breakage. The energy necessary to break is essentially the energy necessary to produce crack tips, since the energy necessary to extend the cracks to breakage is already present as strain energy in the deformed particles. After breakage nearly all of this energy appears as heat. The crack length cannot be measured directly. However, in particles of regular and similar shape the crack tip length is considered as equal to the crack depth, or crack extension necessary to break, so that the crack length equals the square root of one-half of the surface area. The Third Theory states that the useful work done in crushing and grinding is directly proportional to the total length of the new cracks formed. It can be confirmed by showing that a constant work input produces a constant length of new cracks when reducing the same material to different product sizes. This is done in the present paper on a wide variety of material. The constant work input was supplied by one revolution of the 12" x 12" laboratory ball mill used in making grindability tests by the Allis-Chalmers method (12) (13) The new crack lengths produced per mill revolution were measured from all available grindability test results at 28, 35, 48, 65, and 100 mesh on fifteen different ores, and were found to remain substantially constant for each ore at all mesh sizes. A new technique is used for the measurement of crack lengths. Size distribution plots of the mill feed and product are made by the Third Theory method (9) and the crack lengths are obtained from these plots by the procedure described in the present paper. The energy input required to produce a unit length is of fundamental importance in the size reduction of brittle solids. The crack length Cr is expressed in centimeters per cubic centimeter of solid material. It bears a definite relationship to the external surface area of the crushed or ground solid. A uniform particle shape must be assumed before the surface area and crack length can be evaluated. In this paper it is assumed that the relationship between the surface area and the particle volume of a particle d microns in diameter is the same as that of cube d microns on a side. The external surface areas of particles with a cubical breakage probably agree approximately with this rule, and correction factors can be applied when physical measurements of the surface areas are available for comparison. However, the assumption of equivalent cubes has been found satisfactory for most calculation purposes. Assuming equivalent cubes, one cubic centimeter of particles d microns in diameter will have a crack length Cr of v30.000/d centimeters, and a surface area of 60,000/d square centimeters. The specific crack length is thus equal to the square root of one-half the specific surface area. Where Sa is the surface area in square centimeters per gram and Sg is the specific gravity of the ground solid, then Cr = vSg . Sa/2 = 173.2/ vd (1)

IN a recent paper the authors1 discussed the reactions to tempering of hypereutectoid steels quenched from 1000° C., as revealed by studies on changes in hardness, electrical resistivity, coercive force and metallographic characteristics. The data, which related specifically to tempering temperatures of 550°, 650° and 710° C., for varying periods up to 125 hr., permitted the following important conclusions: 1. The rate of softening of the steels at the temperatures examined differed markedly although the steels were of "similar" general chemical composition. 2. The temperature of maximum softening spread over a range from about 650° C. to the eutectoid inversion. 3. The divergence in behavior was ascribed, at least in part, to a profound difference in tendency to graphitization on annealing at subeutectoid temperatures. 4. The node of spheroidization of the cementite, as revealed by metallographic studies, also varied considerably in the different steels. The purpose of the present investigation is to pursue further the study of the difference in behavior of the steels on tempering over a wider range of temperature. To this end the following features have received particular attention: 1. Comparison of temperatures of maximum softening of the various steels when the quenched samples were tempered for 5 hr. and for 75 hr. followed by furnace cooling and by quenching in water. 2. Determination of the effect of quenching temperature, prior to tempering, on the rate of softening. Quenching temperatures of 1000° and 850° C. were used in the investigations. 3. Examination of the microstructures obtained with the various heat-treatments employed.

Synthetic polycrystals of wustite were reduced ilz H2-H2O mixtures over limited roncentration ranges wiltun the wustite. field and the weight changes were continuously followed with a McBain quartz spiral balance. The reduction was. found to be controlled by a combined surface plus solid-state diffusion reaction. The solid-state diffusion had an activation energy of 38 kcal. Self--diflusioities of iron decreased with itzcreasing vacancy concentration. The activation energy of. the surface reaction runs different tor- different samples. The surface reaction-rate constan increased with increasirzg vacancy concentration. THE reduction of the oxides of iron has been studied for many years. Edstroem' has summarized the early work and has provided much information on the reduction of magnetite and hematite by hydrogen and carbon monoxide. More recent summaries are those by smeltzer2 and Themelis and Gauvin.3 Most investigators have reported that the iron metal which forms the outer layer during gaseous reduction is rather porous. According to Kohl and Engel14 the formation of such a porous iron layer depends on the properties of the underlying wiistite layer, on the reaction of the gas with the wustite surface, and on the transport of matter through the wustite layer. McKewan, Quets, Wadsworth, and Lewis, and Knacke 10 have found that, if a porous iron layer is formed, a surface reaction between gas and wustite at the bottom of the pores controls the rate of reaction. Seth and ROSS 11 and Warner 12 have pointed out that the influence of the gaseous pore diffusion through the porous iron layer cannot be neglected. It has further been shown that the wiistite layer formed during reduction is dense and that transport of matter across the layer occurs only by solid-state diffusion of iron ions.13,14 The solid-state diffusion rates observed by Edstroem and Bitsianis 14 and the surface reaction rates observed by Quets eta1.' show that an interaction of the two steps in controlling the reaction rate has to be considered. In this investigation the reduction of wustite was studied with respect to the interaction of the two steps, isolated from any other effects, by reducing wustite within the wustite field from higher to lower oxygen concentrations with H2-H2O gas mixtures. A similar study with CO-CO2 mixtures has been performed by Levin and wagner.15 Fused synthetic wustite polycrystals were reduced in steps of 0.4 wt pct from 24.4 to 23.2 wt pct 0 and over a temperature range from 700" to 1050°C. A few tests were also conducted with reduction steps from 24.4 to 23.6 wt pct 0 and 24.5 to 23.2 wtpct0. The Fe-O phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1 where the composition of the gas phase in equilibrium with the condensed phases is plotted as pct H2 vs the temperature. A careful study of the literature led to the conclusion that the fully drawn equicomposition curves (in wt pct O) in the wustite field used by Edstroem 1,16 and other authors needed some correction. Based on results by Darken and Gurry17 (shown as open circles) and on some of our own data, four corrected curves for 23.2, 23.6, 24.0, and 24.4 wt pct O were calculated (drawn as dashed lines in Fig. 1) which should replace the fully drawn equicomposition curves. MATERIALS AND APPARATUS Materials and Specimen Preparation. Wustite was prepared from iron sulfate (Fisher Scientific Co., New York) which had a purity of over 99.92 pct, with small amounts of manganese, copper, and zinc adding up to 0.03 pct. From the aqueous solution iron oxalate was precipitated and decomposed to magnetite according to Economos. 18 The magnetite powder was pressed into cylinders and sintered in vacuum at 900°C for several hours. The sintered compacts were placed in a platinum crucible of 2.5 cm diam which was fitted into a high-purity alumina crucible and then inserted into the center of the graphite heating element of an electric resistance furnace.lg The furnace was evacuated to below 1 p Hg and the magnetite sample was slowly heated. A need for new supplies of fresh water exists today and in many specific areas that need is urgent. One solution lies in saline water conversion, a problem complicated by cost factors. The principles involved in saline water conversion, the status of development, and the estimated costs (present and future) of several processes are presented. Among the methods discussed are distillation, electrodialysis, and freezing. In general, the costs presented are based on a standardized procedure for estimating conversion costs, permitting a valid comparison among the various processes. The need for new supplies of fresh water and the potential benefits to be derived from an abundant supply of converted water are recognized by practically everyone concerned with water problems. The water supply problem exists today; it is urgent in many specific areas in this country and also in the world, and it will become more acute in the future. One answer to the growing problem of adequate water supplies is the development of new sources. Very significant quantities of brackish underground and surface waters exist in certain areas and an inexhaustible supply of ocean water is available. Thus in many areas water resources can be extended through saline water conversion. Congress recognized the need for new sources of fresh water in 1952 and passed the Saline Water Act, Public Law 448, amended it in 1955, and in September 1958, enacted Public Law 85-883, calling for the construction of at least five demonstration plants. The program is administered by the Dept. of Interior through the Office of Saline Water, and its primary objective is to reduce the cost of converted water produced, whether it be by development of new processes or improvement of known processes. This is a most difficult problem and one that will require several years of prodigious effort. It is difficult—not because of any intricate or new chemistry, engineering, or physics involved—but because of the difficulty in converting water at low cost. Whatever the sources of the saline water, the salts which are held tenaciously in solution must be removed before the water becomes suitable for industrial or domestic uses. Saline water is a relatively simple system of salts dissolved in water. It has certain chemical and physical properties that determine the various methods by which the salts may be separated from the water. The system, although not complex, in most instances, has had countless years in which to reach equilibrium and is, therefore, comparatively stable. Because of its stability, separation of saline solutions requires relatively large quantities of energy. The unique properties of water depend on the fact that its molecules are chemically active. The chemical and physical properties of water are associated with the type of bonding involved in the water molecule. Chemical changes such as hydrolysis, or rusting of iron, involve the breaking of chemical bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Physical changes, such as evaporation in a boiler, the melting of ice, or the viscous resistance to flow in a pipe, involve breaking of the hydrogen bonds. (The hydrogen nucleus is so small that it can attract two negative atoms.) Thus water molecules not only combine with molecules of other compounds but even with one another; e.g., each molecule may be bounded to four other molecules. Water molecules cling to the ions of dissolved salt to form water-encumbered hydrated ions and they cling to one another to form entangling networks through which hydrated ions can be propelled only by tearing the networks apart. That is one reason why considerable energy still needs to be expended in our simplest procedures for purifying water. If water molecules did not have this habit of clinging so tenaciously to other molecules, and to one another, it would be easy to push salt ions past the water molecule and get a separation. But the water would not then dissolve salt, so the problem would not exist.' Water when heated evaporates very slowly, relative to other liquids having simple molecules. Vaporization involves the separation of molecules from the liquid, and this means overcoming the attraction between molecules which is due to the hydrogen bonding. The heat of vaporization for water is high; consequently, the boiling point of water is also high. Water boils at 100" C; hydrogen sulfide (H2S) at -60" C; oxygen (02) at -183" C; nitrogen (N2) at -196" C; and methane (CH4) at-161°C, even though the latter has about the same molecular weight as water. Because of these peculiar properties of water, it exists as a liquid on earth instead of a gas such as hydrogen sulfide or nitrogen and oxygen.

MCMORRIS III INTRODUCTION In the early days of coarse-coal treatment by the dense-medium process in Europe, loess was one of the materials used for medium solids. Newly developed cyclones were used to reclaim and thicken the loess suspension. On occasion, when the cyclone thickener at the Maurits mine in the Nether- lands plugged, the overflow was found to be filled with clean coal free of impurity. From this observation stemmed the concept of the cyclone as a cleaning device. Development took place during World War I1 in the lab- oratory of the Dutch State Mines under the direction of M. G. Driessen. A 15 tph (13.6 mt) pilot plant was in operation in the laboratory by 1945, when, in September, Driessen made the first public disclosure of the process in a paper presented to the Institute of fie1 in London. Outlook for the district......................344 Introduction In an earlier report on the Sumpter quadrangle1 it was briefly stated that the quartz lodes of that region might be separated into several groups or belts on the basis of the kind and abundance of the minerals of which they are composed, and that these belts were disposed as areal zones around the principal intrusive mass of the region. When the opportunity to revisit the region was offered in 1929, as a result of a cooperative agreement between the State Mining Board of Oregon and the United States Geological Survey, it seemed advisable to pay particular attention to this feature of the lodes, in the hope that if the idea of zonal relations was confirmed it might serve as a guide in exploitation.

Charcoal-iron is quantitively so unimportant compared with coke-iron, that its qualitative importance for many industrial purposes is entirely unkriown to many coke-furnace-men, and to the great majority of the inembers of this Institute. To explain this qualitative importance, and explain some of the fact,ors that affect the quality, are the objects of this paper. A brief review of' the commercial conditions governing the charcoal-iron industry is a necessary preliminary to any adequate treatment of the subject. The advent of coke-iron, which transformed the whole iron industry commercially, left intact a limited production of charcoal-iron in the East and South, which has been conducted almays on the basis of high cost and high quality, with correspondingly high selling-price. In the Northwest, particularly in the Lake Superior district, the development has been along totally different lines, for which the close proximity of the great iron-ore deposits and the great forests of that region mere responsible. When the great white-pine forests were removed there were left behind large areas of hardwood and hemlock, to which little attention was paid in the prosperous years of the white-pine industry. But when the latter declined, the demand for lumber, and the presence of lumber-men, probably more skilled than any others in the world, caused the gradual introduction of these woods into commercial use. It was a matter of ancient knowledge that hardwood made an excellent charcoal, and to utilize the cordwood left after the saw-logs were removed, by converting it into charcoal and using it to smelt ore from the adjacent mines, mas an obvious step. The paper presents a theoretical approach to the drilling problem based on rock mechanics and drilling fluid hydraulics at the bottom of the hole. The volume of the fractured rock around the vevtically penetrating bit tooth is expressed as a function of the tooth pressure, included tooth angle, drilling fluid pressure and formation characteristics on the assumption that fracturing is preceded by plastic flow. This assumption is verified by comparing the stress-strain state in the rock around the tooth to that in equivalent tri-axial compression tests described in the literature. An expression similar to the above is derived for the tooth penetration in the cuttings which have been retrained at the bottom. Combination of these two expressions leads to a relation between depth of tooth penetration in the virgin rock, the amount of cuttings retained and the other variables. By relating the cutting volume to the drilling rate, the hydraulic bit horsepower and the drilling fluid pressure, it is possible to arrive at formulas which express the drilling rate for viscous or turbulent flow at the cutting surface, for instant clearance, for retained cuttings, or for false tooth foundering as functions of such variables as the drilling fluid pressure, hydraulic horsepower at the bit, rotary speed and bit weight. Plotting the results as drilling curves and comparing them to published field and laboratory data justify the conclusion that the drilling model presented in this paper approximates the actual mechanism. The drilling curves serve to explain some characteristic features of the rotary drilling operation, and the equations may be used for numerical evaluation of the effect of changes in the magnitude of some of the variables on the drilling rate. INTRODUCTION Published laboratory data have established that consistent and relatively simple relations exist between the drilling rate and any one of the important variables. For instance, the drilling rate usually increases at an increasing rate with the bit weight. It increases at a decreasing rate with the rotary speed, decreases at a decreasing rate with increased drilling fluid pressure and plots as an S-shaped curve against the hydraulic horsepower at the bit. This relative simplicity seems difficult to understand considering that the drilling mechanism is a continuous process of generation and removal of innumerable individual cuttings, under different conditions for each. On the other hand, the drilling rate (although determined by this complicated process) only expresses the average rate at which cuttings are produced and cleared away. Ignorance of the drilling mechanism as far as individual cuttings are concerned, therefore, does not exclude the possibility of arriving at a concept of the drilling rate provided the mechanism is properly evaluated for the average cutting. It then may be concluded from the first sentence that this concept also should be rather simple in its final form, although not necessarily in its derivation. Two aspects of the drilling mechanism are difficult to evaluate — (1) the effect a penetrating drilling fluid has on the stresses around a bit tooth entering the formation and (2) the volume of rock fractured by a penetrating tooth which moves both vertically and horizontally. Thus, the scope of this paper has been limited to an evaluation of the drilling mechanism in formations which have a low permeability and are drilled with hard-formation bits. In the following sections, the drilling mechanism is analyzed in three steps. First, the effect of tooth pressure on the volume of fractured rock around the tooth is evaluated, assuming initially that the bottom of the hole is free of cuttings and, then, determining the effect of a layer of these cuttings. In the second section, the thickness of this layer is related to the drilling rate and the chip clearance time, and the latter to the hydraulic horsepower at the bit under conditions of laminar and viscous flow at the cutting surface. In the third section. the previous results are combined with the rotary speed into drilling equations which are then plotted and compared to experimental drilling curves. This section also contains some numerical examples of drilling rate computations. Some mathematical details are given in the appendixes. Finally, it should be mentioned that, although some drilling equations are already available, these equations (with the exception of one' which attempts to relate drilling rate to drilling fluid pressure) are all mathematical expressions for observed laboratory data; none considers the effect of delayed drill-cutting removal, an essential feature of the drilling mechanism.

IN the normal operation of the iron blast furnace, reduction of the iron oxides is accomplished almost entirely above the tuyeres.' Blast furnace slags usually contain less than 0.5 pct FeO, although higher values may occur with abnormal operation. There is reason to conjecture, however, that incompletely reduced ore may sometimes reach the hearth and enter the slag as a result of heavy slips or, perhaps, even from cores of excessively large lumps of a charge material of poor reducibility. The possibility of reoxidation of iron droplets falling in front of the tuyeres has been considered by several writers. It would be of interest, to know how rapidly iron oxides reaching the slag for any of these reasons could be reduced by reaction with coke or with the high carbon liquid iron in the hearth. In comparison with the hundreds of papers that have appeared on various aspects of the reduction of solid iron oxides by gases and in the presence of several forms of carbon, little work has been published on the reductioin of liquid oxides or slags. Dancey measured rates of reaction of the pure liquid oxides, both FeO and Fe,O,, with molten iron containing about 4.3 pct C. The oxide was dropped into the cup formed in the upper surface of the iron by rotating the crucible and melt. Under these conditions, reduction of either FeO or Fe,O., was completed in less than 10 sec. The present study was concerned with the reduction of FeO from blast furnace-type slags containing less than 5 pct FeO and melted over carbon-saturated iron in stationary graphite crucibles. The results were considerably different from those found by Dancey, as will be discussed later. Although this work is of interest in relation to hearth reactions in the blast furnace, interpretations must be made with caution because the experimental conditions do not duplicate those within a furnace and may not even lead to the same reaction mechanism. The authors were motivated in undertaking this work by an additional interest—the part played by FeO reduction in the mechanism of de-sulphurization of iron by slags under similar experimental conditions. Derge, Philbrook, and Goldman eveloped detailed experimental evidence to support a three-step mechanism for desulphurization like that originally proposed by Holbrook and Joseph' (These reactions are written in molecular form for convenience, but this is not intended to imply the existence of molecules of FeS in the bulk metal phase nor to deny the likelihood of ionic reactions in the slag.) Earlier work by Chang and Goldman" had shown that the overall reaction follows first-order kinetics with respect to sulphur and that the rate of reaction is proportional to the slag-metal interface area, which observations have been confirmed by subsequent work. Later studiese,' have established the influence of al.loying elements on the first and last steps of the reaction. This paper reports a study of step 3 alone, uncomplicated by the simultaneous process of sulphur transfer. Apparatus and Procedure The experiments were made in a conventional high frequency induction furnace powered by a 35 kva Hg spark gap converter. The graphite crucibles used for most of the runs were 14 cm (5.5 in.) deep and 4.8 cm (1.9 in.) ID with 0.75 cm (0.3 in.) wall. An insulating cover with a small opening for withdrawing samples was used to minimize heat loss and infiltration of air into the furnace. The crucible was charged with 300 g of carbon-saturated iron and either 65 or 100 g of prefused slag analyzing 38.0 pct SiO,, 15.4 pct A10 and 47.1 pct CaO. To obtain the cleanest possible interface at the start of the reaction, the metal and slag were brought to temperature together to prevent the rejection of kish graphite that would have been caused by the chilling effect of a large addition of cold slag to carbon-saturated iron. After temperature control had been established, the desired amount of iron oxide was added in the form of a prefused slag of composition 73.6 pct FeO, 7.7 pct AWX and 19.0 pct SiOl. This slag addition was observed to be molten in somewhat less than 1 min, and a very vigorous reaction proceeded for 1 to 2 min after its introduction. Zero time was taken as 2 min after the ferrous silicate slag addition. Slag samples weighing about 0.5 g each were taken periodically by a copper chill sampler." The weight of the initial slag was large relative to the weight of samples removed, so that the slag weight never varied by more than 5 pct during any run. Temperature was measured by a calibrated W/Mo thermocouple immersed in the metal, with a graphite tip cemented over the fused silica protection tube to prevent attack by slag and metal. After some difficulties with uncertain temperatures during the first two runs, the practice adopted to position the thermocouple for reproducible results was to lower the protection tube to touch the bottom of the crucible and then raise it 0.5 cm. The apparent temperature gradient between the bottom of the crucible and the top of the slag was found to be 15°C (27°F). but much of this spread was probably the result of inadequate immersion of the protection tube to off-set conduction losses along the graphite tip when the thermocouple was inserted only into the slag. The temperature of the bath was controlled within 25°C (9°F) during a run.

Preferred orientations in rolled and annealed titanium sheets were determined by the Geiger counter spectrometer X-ray diffraction technique. Five annealing textures dependent upon the temperature range of annealing were found, and in order of increasing annealing temperature pendent upon the temperature range are: 1—a deformation like texture, 2—a rotated inorder a-recrystallization temperature texture, 3-a retained u-recrysraIlization texture, on annealing at lower temperatures of the ß-region, 4—a transformation texture based on recrystallized a and predicted by the Burgers' relationship, and 5—a ,ß-cube texture. These results are examined in terms of current theories of recrystallization textures. UMEROUS investigators have described the tex- ture obtained by cold rolling the hexagonal metals, titanium, zirconium, and beryllium, which have c/a ratios less than that of ideal packing, 1.633. The basal planes are rotated out of the rolling plane, about the rolling direction, so that the basal poles are tilted toward the transverse direction as shown schematically in Fig. la. In all instances but one,' it was also reported that the [1010] direction was parallel to the rolling direction (see Fig. lb). Hot rolling has been reported as causing a similar tilt of the basal poles in the transverse direction (see Fig. la) and causing the [1010] direction also to be parallel to the rolling direction as shown schematically in Fig. lb. Annealing after deformation does not appreciably change the tilt of the basal poles in the transverse direction." Beryllium2-7 continues to have the [1010] direction in the rolling direction after annealing, and similar observations for titanium and zirconium' . have been reported for annealing at fairly low temperatures, again as in Fig. lb. At higher annealing temperatures, however, the recrystallized grains of titanium" and zirconium have an orientation such that the [1120] direction is approximately in the rolling direction, although the basal poles are still inclined in the transverse direction. Figs. la and lc show the resulting orientations schematically. This change in orientation has been described as a nominally ±30° rotation of the hexagonal crystallites about the basal poles of the cold rolled texture and is apparent from the results which are summarized in Table I for investigations with the X-ray diffraction technique employing film. The angles y, , and ß are indicated in Fig. 2 which represents the stereographic projection of (1070) poles for the mean orientation of a pole figure. Texture determinations for titanium using the Geiger counter spectrometer have provided similar results except that in some instances additional components of the texture were proposed, as shown by the summary of data in the upper half of Table 11. On the other hand, the spectrometer technique, when applied to zirconium,* has revealed a splitting Recently completed studies of the textures of annealed zirconium", show zirconium to possess textures very similar to those reported here for titanium. Therefore, much of this discussion will include zirconium by virtue of its close similarity to titanium in pref erred orientations. of the intense areas of the pole figure for samples annealed at 600°C. This splitting could be described by a 7" rotation of the tilt axis about the normal to the rolling plane. Such a splitting for the annealed texture relative to the cold rolled texture was not observed in other determinations for either zirconium or titanium using the less sensitive film X-ray methoe and makes the relationship between the two types of texture more complex than the simple rotation about the (0001) pole based on film work. The more precise investigations on zirconium permit the descriptions in the lower part of Table 11, which show that the texture depends quantitatively on the temperature of annealing. When zirconium is annealed at temperatures up to 400°C, the texture is similar to the cold rolled texture, while annealing in the range 500" to 900°C produces a texture which is only approximately described as [11%] in the rolling direction. More precisely described results for zirconium show that the two types of splitting ( 1—about an axis in the rolling plane through an angle given in the second column in Table II and 2—about the normal to the rolling plane through an angle given in the third column of Table 11) depend on annealing temperature. The [1120 is the rolling direction only when the annealing temperature is in the vicinity of 900°C

AN increase of 18 per cent in the production and consumption of all metals last year was readily met by the mines, but more than an average amount of development work was made necessary. Mining methods were improved appreciably; open-pit operations ad¬vanced more than underground practice: and the transportation phase of mining progressed to a greater extent than the other related functions. A new belt-conveyor system of mining was placed in operation at the Spruce open-pit iron ore mine at Eveleth, Minn. The gathering portion of the belt system was installed beneath the surface of the open pit, following closely the bottom rock, in especially provided drifts; beyond it inclined upward to the surface and finally discharged into a 500-ton shipping pocket. Length of the belt was 4500 ft. net vertical lift 386 ft. and capacity 750 long tons per hour. The mined ore found its way to the belt through one of three vertical raises, whose horizontal section was 10 by 10 ft. Each raise was equipped with a grizzly, crusher, pan-type feeder, and auxiliary equipment. Transportation of the ore from the working faces of the pit was accomplished as follows: (1) Two raises were equipped with tower and anchor stations, 3-cu.yd. drag scrapers, and related power units; (2) the remaining raise was provided with electrically driven power shovels and 20-ton trucks mounted on pneumatic tires. This installation has entirely replaced railway pit haulage and partly eliminated power shovels. In a similar

In a conventional cement plant, the drying and heating of the raw material takes place in the upper section of a cylindrical kiln where the heat exchange is poor. In a Lepol kiln this part of the process is carried out on a traveling grate where the heat exchange is efficient. The increase in fuel economy justifies the greater complexity of the installation.
