An overview is given of the matte melting process used for the beneficiation of South African Platinum Group Metal (PGM) ores. Most producers use six-electrode furnaces to melt the concentrate and Pierce Smith converters to oxidize excess iron sulphide from the furnace matte. Concentrates from two reef-types (the so-called Merensky and UG-2 reefs) dominate the feedstock supply. Concentrate from the Merensky reef is low in chromium and do not pose significant melting problems. Concentrates from the UG-2 reef contain much higher levels of chromium, which results in the formation of chromium-rich spinels during melting. This is attributed to the low solubility of chromium in furnace slag under typical operating conditions (an oxygen partial pressure of 10-8-10-9bar at temperatures of 1550°C to 1600°C). During the converting process care is needed to avoid excessively oxidizing conditions, which result in cobalt, nickel and copper losses to the slag. High nickel losses result in the formation ofFe2NiO4(trevorite), which often forms solid solutions with FeCr2O4and Fe3O4. In future, the main challenge in the processing of South African PGM ores will be to cope with ever increasing levels of chromium in the concentrate. A short-term solution to the problem would be to melt the concentrate under slightly reducing conditions to promote the formation of CrO, which is more soluble in the slag than Cr2O3. A longer-term solution to the problem would be to abandon the current matte-smelting process in favour of an alloy-based process, which would offer total flexibility with respect to the amount of chromium that can be tolerated in the feed. Viscosity measurements were carried out on slags in the CaO-Cu2O-CuO-MgO-SiO2systemcontaining ~ 63 wt% SiO2in air. The experimental work was carried out over a range of temperatures where the slags were completely liquid. Initial measurements were on a binary CaO-SiO2slag to which incremental additions of CuxO-MgO-SiO2slag with the same silica mole fraction were made. The viscosity-temperature relationship was measured for slags with‘Cu2O’contents of 0.02, 0.19, 0.38, 0.79, 1.69, 2.47, 3.01, 5.31 and 10.0 wt%. The proportions of Cu+and Cu2+in the slags were determined. The oxidation state of Cushifted from predominantly Cu+to Cu2+, with the Cu+/Cu2+ratio of approximately 0.3 for slag with a Cu content above 2 wt%. This is equivalent to Cu1.13O. The trends observed for changes of Cu2+/Cu+redox ratio with slag chemistry were consistent with the literature. Decreasing the CaO content by substituting copper oxide resulted in a decrease in the Cu+/Cu2+redox ratio. The change in ratio corresponded to a shift of the value of x in CuxO from an initial value of 1.8 to 1.1,when the slags contained 10% ‘Cu2O’. In this study, the SiO2content of the slags varied between 64 and 60 wt% as the Cu content increased. The viscosity of the slag containing 10 wt% CuxO was nearly 4.5 times lower than the binary CaO-SiO2slag. As the silica mole fraction (xSiO2) actually stayed constant (0.61±0.009),the results show that CuxO acted as a network breaker. Comparison with other ternary slags with similar silica mole fractions suggest that that addition of CuxO to silicate slags has a stronger effect on lowering the viscosity than FeO or MnO has on a molar basis. Physical models from equivalent materials satisfying geometrical and physical similarity have been constructed. A special technology of simulating the excavation of an opening at the front part of a tunnel and of measuring the deformation at the tunnel face was applied. The results yielded by the physical models were used to formulate constitution relations in the numerical solution. This coupled modelling enables us to predict the behaviour of tunnel structures more accurately. On a construit des modèles physiques, réalisés en matériaux équivalents et répondant aux conditions de ressemblance géométrique et physique. Sur ces modèles, on a utilisé une technologie intéressante de simulation du forage du tunnel et de la mesure de déformation du front de taille pendant le forage en progression. Les résultats donnés par les modèles physiques ont été utilisés pour formuler les relations de constitution dans la solution numérique. Une telle construction de modèles combinés permet de prévoir plus précisément le comportement de la structure du tunnel. Es wurden physikalische Simulierungsmodelle aus äquivalenten Werkstoffen konstruiert, welche die Bedingungen der geometrischen und physikalischen Ähnlichkeiten erfüllen. Bei diesen Modellen hat man die interessante Simulationstechnologie des Tunnelvortriebs sowie die Verformungsmessung beim Tunnelabbaustoß während des Vortriebsvorgangs eingesetzt. Die Ergebnisse der physikalischen Simulation wurden zur Formulierung von Konstitutionsrelationen in der numerischen Lösung genützt. So eine kombinierte Simulation erlaubt eine genauere Prognose des Benehmens der Tunnelstruktur.

The Mintek Thermal Magnesium Process (MTMP) was successfully demonstrated in November 2004. The pilot plant was operated continuously for 8 days, during which about 30 tons of magnesium producing recipe was smelted in a DC (direct-current) arc furnace at a feed rate of 525 kg/h. The furnace was operated at power levels of 700 to 850 kW, resulting in slag tapping temperatures of 1600 to 1700°C. Magnesium extraction averaged 77 per cent and was as high as 85 per cent during good extraction periods. The furnace generated 70 to 85 kg/h magnesium vapour that was delivered to the condenser where the temperature was controlled at 680 to 720°C. The novel condenser captured the magnesium in a liquid state, which was tapped periodically as required. In total, 15 magnesium-tapping operations were carried out, proving that online magnesium tapping can be consistently performed without any major difficulty. About 3500 kg of crude magnesium was produced with a quality that was similar to, if not better than, that of the Magnetherm?s crude metal. The condensation efficiency averaged 85 per cent, and peaked at 87 per cent, which exceeded the target of 80 per cent set for the pilot scale. A brief magnesium market study was also carried out. Magnesium demand is expected to keep on growing by 6 to 8 percent over the next 10 years and could reach 2 million tons by the year 2020. The growth will be mainly in the die-casting sector for light-weight automotive applications. China is likely to remain the dominant supplier of primary magnesium but competitively priced non-Chinese magnesium producers will be needed to sustain the anticipated growth of 6 to 8 per cent over the next 10 years. In addition, a prefeasibility study was undertaken for a commercial plant. The study confirmed the relatively low capitalcosts of the MTMP process, as well as the competitiveness of theoperating costs, as compared to the industrial electrolytic process.

Determining the efficiency of a surface coal mine operation is an essential activity, which can help in deciding on the optimal use of input resources, including effective capital allocation, in generating a desired quantity of coal of a specific quality. Mines operate today in challenging conditions, with diminishing reserves of high-quality coal, remote location of new coal deposits, infrastructure problems, environmental legislation, and the effects of climate. All these have an impact on the performance of a mine. Given such challenges, a company has to be technically efficient compared to other existing coal producers in order to generate profits. It can use the measurement of its efficiency to evaluate its productivity, benchmarking this against the best-performing mines and determining optimal variables in order to minimize slack and achieve the desired outputs. This paper discusses the use of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) in evaluating the efficiency of a surface coal mine supply chain for the coal export market. The supply chain is considered to be composed of subprocesses that are modelled as a multistage system. Numeric examples will be used to illustrate the application of DEA.

In the early days of underground coal mining, the use of explosives to break coal resulted in a large number of disastrous methane and coal dust explosions and consequential loss of life. Research by the British, French, US authorities, amongst others, introduced many practices that significantly reduced the occurrence of such incidences. The use of explosives designed to be safe in a methane atmosphere, plus the creation of a second free face were two such practices which became commonly used in coal mines all over the world including southern Africa. With its associated coal cutting equipment and labour, the cost of creating a second free face is significant and this, together with the constant drive to reduce mining costs in a competitive market, causes mine management to regularly question the need for the second free face. Also, the safety and nature of permitted explosives has changed considerably since the days of black powder and nitroglycerine-based explosives with the introduction of water-based explosives. In southern Africa mining regulations pertaining to the blasting of coal has its origins in British research which was largely done in the first half of the twentieth century. More recent research by the US Bureau of Mine has resulted in a deeper understanding of some of the mechanisms of methane ignition by explosives and suggests that some of the earlier regulations can be relaxed to a certain extent without compromising safety. This paper gives an overview of the original research done in Europe and the more recent work in the USA, to give mine management and regulatory authorities a deeper understanding of the important safety issues when using explosives in a methane atmosphere. It also suggests that blasting off the solid is no less safe than using a second free face providing certain safety procedures are followed.

Fine phosphate feed is considered to be slime and normally disposed of as a discard in settling ponds or dumped as landfill. The purpose of this research was to establish whether commercially acceptable qualities and yields could be obtained from this material using dry separation methods. The results obtained from the electrostatic separation of <105 µm phosphate ore are presented. An existing separator was upgraded in order to improve on product and flotation concentrate recovery, to test different mineral, and to reduce particle residence time between the charging chamber and the separating zone of the separator. The operating conditions were varied according to the charges imparted to the particles in the electric field, and according to other device parameters. Parameters such as splitter position, charge reversal, rotation speed, charging voltage and separating voltage. The <105 µm phosphate feed was concentrated under both triboelectrification and inductive charging. The use of inductive charging and charge reversal resulted in a significant increase in grade for <105 µm phosphate feed, with the P205 grade increasing from about 12 per cent to 20.50 per cent, and a recovery of 26.30 per cent under a single stage of separation. It was found that better separation was achieved at rotation speed of 6000 r/min, -8 kV charging voltage, and 25 kV separating voltage.

The advent of low-quality export coal demand has brought a new range of possibilities to the South African coal industry. Products that traditionally were only of value to the domestic or combustion industry sectors now have the potential to be exported, with only minor amounts of upgrading required through beneficiation. Comparatively high steam-coal export prices can be obtained for lowquality export coal, which enhances the economic feasibility of expanding low-quality thermal coal exports. There are, however, increasing concerns about the feasibility of lower quality thermal coal exports and the broader implications. These concerns relate to the environmental impact of low-quality thermal coal production for export and the inherent threat to the security of domestic thermal coal supply in South Africa. Against this background, this paper serves to explain the extended value chain in the production of export coal. The technical and economic advantages and disadvantages of low-grade exports versus coal production for domestic use are evaluated. The value chain estimation is calculated by the beneficiation modelling and characterization of two coals. Based on the value estimation, the lowgrade export production scenario, and finally the modelling of potential pollutant distribution, are described. In constructing a financial model of a project significant effort is expended on capital and operating cost estimation, commodity price forecasts, and choice of discount rates while uncertainty in the primary input, the reserve, is often completely overlooked. The aim of this paper is to highlight the impact of uncertainty in the resource/reserve estimation process on the assessment of the financial performance of a project. Four qualitative processes have an impact on resource/reserve uncertainty. These stages are: 1.Ore definition 2.Geological interpretation 3.Resource estimation 4.Ore reserve estimation and mine planning. Each stage contains a number of tasks that may be considered as key performance activities (KPAs). Optimizing the manner in which these KPAs are completed can remove a great deal of uncertainty and error from the resource/reserve process. Examination of these KPAs within a company can also provide an insight to the quality of the information underlying the project. This will allow the company to identify any shortcomings in the data and to assess the resulting risks (Gilfillan, 1998). A hypothetical financial model based on a gold operation has been used to estimate the potential effect of resource/reserve uncertainty on revenue. Monte Carlo simulation has been employed to simulate a number of hypothetical scenarios: 1.a base case scenario which assumes no major errors or biases, but contains realistic margins for uncertainty that would exist in any project where work is being completed to the limit of best endeavours 2.a poor sampling scenario which assumes poor sampling practice and lack of understanding of sample preparation 3.a poor resource estimation scenario which assumes poor modelling and inappropriate choice of interpolation technique, and 4. a ?typical? scenario which represents a project where the majority of KPAs are not performed as best as they could be. The results show that realistic uncertainty ranges can generate changes in the estimate of potential revenue of plus or minus 30%.Therefore, it is important to allow for errors in these processes in any financial analysis or feasibility study. It is recommended that, when building a financial model, are view of relevant resource/reserve KPAs be carried out and appropriate ranges for uncertainty be applied to provide a range of potential outcomes. These outcomes can then be factored into the detailed cash flow analysis in order to ensure that technical uncertainty is built into financial decisions.

A test has been devised that can predict accurately the % crystallinity developed in a slag film formed between the steel strand and the mould. The % crystallinity in the test samples was determined and compared with that for slag films formed in the mould when casting with that flux. There was good agreement between the % crystallinity in the test samples and the slag films. It was found that additions of TiO2and ZrO2had little effect on the amount of crystalline phase formed, but additions of CaO caused a dramatic increase in the amount of crystalline phase formed. Various parameters (which can be calculated from chemical composition of the flux) have been plotted against % crystallinty in the test samples. It was found that the modified (NBO/T) ratio provided the best relation with % crystallinity for the various parameters tested. There commended relation is % crystallinity=141.1(NBO/T)-284.0. Slag-metal and slag-metal-gas heterogeneous equilibria involving MnO-containing slags have been simulated using recently developed Mn-based alloy and IRSID oxide thermochemical databases. A large number of experimental equilibrium data have been used to verify the calculation results. The experimental slag-metal and slag-metal-gas equilibria in MnO-SiO2binary, MnO-SiO2-CaO and MnO-SiO2-Al2O3ternary, MnO-SiO2-CaO-Al2O3quaternary andMnO-SiO2-CaO-Al2O3-MgO higher-order system can be reproduced within experimental uncertainties. The influence of temperature, CO partial pressure and slag chemistry on the Mn-and Si-distribution equilibria have been quantitatively evaluated. In the submerged arc production of ferromanganese, sillicomanganese and ferrochromium, the coke bed characteristics play an important role. The basic mechanisms of electric current conduction in the coke be dare not yet fully understood, but important parameters are the material resistivity of coke and the contact resistance between the coke particles. Preliminary tests indicate that the contact resistance is of great importance to the bulk resistance of the coke bed. An apparatus measuring the material resistivity and contact resistance of carbon materials has been developed. Both graphite and industrial coke have been tested. The material resistivity tests were performed on single particles to ensure that the effects of pores and cracks were included and the contact resistances were excluded. Two geometries were tested to obtain the contribution of the contact resistance to the total resistance of two connecting particles. The tests were performed in an inert atmosphere at temperatures and current levels found in industrial submerged arc furnaces. The results show that the method has a satisfactory reproducibility. It was found that the contact resistance is about 10 times higher than the resistance of the material when two particles are in perfect contact and that the resistivity of SSAB coke is more than 10 times higher than that of the graphite at room temperature, but with increasing temperature the difference decreases. For SSAB coke the general trend is that both the resistivity and the contact resistance decrease with increasing temperature.

To determine the effect of F ions in the molten alkali silicate systems on their structures, quenched Na2O-SiO2-NaF systems were investigated by Raman spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulation. The systematic increase of 1100 cm-1band intensity in the Raman spectra of the silicate melts accompanying the replacement of F for O provides the evidence for concomitant polymerization of melts. From the molecular dynamics simulation, it was confirmed that most of substituted F was mainly coordinated to Na+ ions but not Si4+ions. These results were consistent with the mechanism in which F associated with otherwise network-modifying Na rather than with network-forming Si. Since F was associated to Na+ ions, the replace of O ion by two F ions promote the polymerization of silicate melts. Discussed in the paper is the redesigned reserve/resource classification for solid minerals being put forth by the authors to replace the acting Russian classification of 19961. The new version is based on the traditional foundations of former Russian classifications and the principles of the ‘McKelvey box’, both categorizing mineral resources according to the degree of geological assurance and economic viability. Based on these approaches the classification deliberately deals with both reserve and resource categories very similar to those established by the Geneva Accords in terms of definitions implied. The authors proceed from the UN-ECE proposed concept of ‘reserves’ being a part of ‘total resources’ explored in great detail by geological and feasibility studies and economically mineable at the time of reporting. The draft classification distinguishes ‘proved’, ‘probable’ and ‘possible’ categories of reserves depending on the stage of feasibility assessment carried out, i.e. the degree of detail and accuracy with which modifying factors affecting mineability of an orebody are taken into account. The reserves are regarded as a product of feasibility assessment of ‘measured’, ‘indicated’ and ‘inferred’ resources. The portions of them not having been classified as ‘reserves’ are regarded as composed of two classes: ‘subeconomic’ and ‘potentially economic’ resources (or ‘resource base’). All the cells of the classification matrix are provided with traditional for Russia alphanumeric designations and appropriate UNFC codes. The classification scheme recommended is viewed as a step forward in improvement of the State inventory and reporting mineral resources in market conditions, conducive to cross-border professional collaboration in the field of providing reliable information on the mineral rawmaterials base of the world’s economy. Besides, it recommends an easy way to get rid of amethodological error in the UNFC classification scheme where consecutive stages of geologicalexploration are identified with a single inherent degree of geological assurance. Most of the compounds present in slag are surface active. This gives rise to foaminess of slag. The foam life and foaming index are normally determined by the draining rate of slag through the plateau border, so the foaming index is directly proportional to slag viscosity and inversely proportional to slag density and bubble diameter. When a small amount of a strong surface active compound like P2O5or Cr2O3is present in slag, however, the foam life increases significantly and the above relationship is not obeyed. The strong surface active compounds reduce the draining rate from the film between the adjacent bubbles so the film draining controls the life of the foam. The thickness of the film, Marangoni force, viscosity of the slag, and diffusion of surface active compounds determine the film draining rate. The interplay of these factors leads to very low or high film draining rates and affects the film and foam stability significantly. Keywords: slag, foam, foaming index, film draining

Outline This paper will consider the implications of the mine closure provisions set out in the new Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act and draft regulations. A comparison will be made with the existing provisions in the Minerals Act and the mine closure policy of the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME). The paper will consider whether the new provisions have the potential for improving performance as regards mine closure. It will investigate the financial provisions requirements and the implications of these provisions for mines. It will consider the requirements for a social and labour plan and consider the implications of this for mine closure and its funding. It will analyse the provisions relating to the transfer of environmental liabilities to third parties and consider the implications of this in the case of closing mines and non-closing mines. Finally it will consider the issue of residual legal liability of a mining company once a closure certificate has been issued.

Tracey Khanna, Assistant Editor of UK?s Mining Magazine discusses some of the new and important environmental challenges, physical and social, that are facing mining companies. The tide of public opinion has turned strongly against those companies which are unable to show that they are practising responsible environmental stewardship. This is, no doubt, in part due to the recent focus of the international media on environmental issues and constantly improving means of communications, which has brought the whole subject of mining and the environment to those who, in the past, had only a limited awareness of the industry. Mining companies today face new and important challenges with regard to the environment, both physical and social. New technology and a greater understanding of waste management techniques has helped to bring about improved handling and disposal of mines wastes, so reducing some of the impacts. However, improved technology has also brought about the economic viability of exploiting increasingly lower-grade ore from open pits, resulting in a greater visual impact.

In this paper some failure phenomena observed in the crossing of brittle rock formations at the Lötschberg base tunnel are presented. A brittle failure criteria, recently developed by Canadian researchers, is applied through finite element calculations together with a semi-empirical failure criterion, to explain these behaviours. Good agreement is found between predicted and observed failures at the tunnel walls. This study also shows some of the limitations of this approach. Dans cet article sont présentés certains phénomènes de rupture observés durant la traversée de zones de roches fragiles lors de l’excavation du tunnel du Lötschberg. Un critère de rupture développé récemment par la recherche canadienne est utilisé à travers des calculs par éléments finis. En parallèle, les résultats sont comparés avec ceux d’un critère semi-empirique. Au niveau des parements, l’ampleur des ruptures observées est assez proche des résultats de calcul. Cette étude a également permis de mettre en avant certaines limites de l’approche choisie. In diesem Artikel werden verschiedene Brucharten dargestellt, die bei der Durchfahrung von sprödem Gestein im Rahmen des Ausbaus des Lötschberg-Basistunnels beobachtet wurden. Zur Erklärung des vorliegenden Verhaltens wurden die erst kürzlich in Kanada entwickelten Theorien zur Beschreibung von Sprödbrüchen herangezogen und bei der Berechnung mittels der Finite-Elemente-Methode und eines semi-empirischen Kriteriums angewendet. Die so vorhergesagten Versagenszonen an den Tunnelwänden stimmen mit den Beobachtungen gut überein. Die Studie hat auch dazu beigetragen, die bei der Anwendung des Lösungsansatzes angetroffenen Schwierigkeiten aufzuzeigen.
