Zirconium chloride is of great commercial importance as starting materials for production of ZrO2, Zirconium metal and other Zirconium compounds from its main resources (Zircon Sands). The present study concerns with preparation of pure ZrO2 from Zircon by direct chlorination technique. Different parameters affecting the chlorination process are studied viz. carbon, chlorine flow rate temperature and time. The chlorination extent is determined from the loss in weight and chemical analysis of reaction products. The maximum chlorination extent -92% are achieved at 1100°C for 30 min. Zirconium oxide is produced from the collected zirconium tetrachloride either by calcination at 900°C or by hydrolysis in water in presence of RCI with a purity = 99%. Evaluations of the products of the process are investigated microscopically and by X-ray diffraction. The apparent activation energy of the chlorination of Zircon is determined to equal 36 kJ/mole.

Most of the gold in the earth's crust occurs as finely-dispersed gold and accounts for much of the gold lost in extraction processes and during exploration for gold. The Compositions, sizes, and morphology of fine gold particles (0.01 to 10 ~m in diameter) were studied with high resolution electron microscopy coupled with electron microprobe and microdiffraction devices, using colloidal carbon replicas. Correlations were made between fine gold, mineral associations and ore genesis. The results provide qualitative information on the proportions of finely dispersed, invisible and visible gold distribution in ores. Such knowledge is fundamental when planning an optimum technological recovery process.

This report describes a laboratory investigation of the effectiveness of low-pressure steam and a steam-water spray sequence for the collection of airborne respirable (<10 µm) coal dust. Comparison of present results to previous results obtained with water spray alone indicates that the use of steam in a steam-spray sequence increases the collection efficiency by about 14 percent over that obtained by water spray alone. However, the use of steam to collect airborne dust requires cooling the steam-dust mixture in order to achieve condensation of the steam, and steam does not appear to be an attractive approach for collecting airborne dust in underground coal mining operations.

"El presente trabajo describe algunos estudios realizados sobre las condiciones ambientales en operaciones de subsuelo, en 30 minas peruanas. Dichos estudios comprenden un período de 10 años (1949-1958) donde se evaluaron los riesgos de contraer silicosis en las zonas mineras, así como aquellos análisis relacionados con las operaciones de subsuelo. La gran mayoría de minas evaluadas están ubicadas en la región de la Sierra (Junin, Pasco, Huancavelica, Cajamarca), mientras que la minoría en Arequipa, Puno, La libertad y Lima, cuyas alturas oscilan entre 1000 y 4800 m.s.n.m. Los resultados de la concentración de monóxido de carbono señalan que de las 20 minas examinadas, solo 8 dieron un 100% de detecciones por debajo del límite permisible. Mientras que del 12 restante, la concentración del gas permanecía luego de un tiempo de dos horas. Por ende, existe una mayoría de centros mineros donde no se concientiza el riesgo de salud sobre estos niveles de monóxido, y tampoco se ejecuta los principios de ventilación por dilución como el mejor medio de evitarlos. Bajo estas circunstancias nace la silicosis, enfermedad producida por la producción de partículas de sílice libre depositada en los pulmones. En 1935, Cummings propuso como primer criterio de riesgo, la relación de la exposición del polvo con la cantidad de sílice libre y a partir de allí, se adoptaron medidas basadas en este primer criterio de ""exposición-respuesta"", encontrándose que el valor máximo del sílice libre está en los minerales de cuarzo, incluso cinco años antes de su exposición. Mientas que la relación alternativa de ""dosis-respuesta"" es más factible en los tres estadíos de la silicosis, tanto en el sentido de sus concentraciones, como en el número de años de exposición."

The Tessenderlo-Kerley Leach process has been shown to be effective in the removal of residual copper from molybdenite concentrates. Concentrates of varying mineralogy, including those containing relatively large amounts of chalcopyrite, have been successfully leached on laboratory and pilot plant scales. The lixiviant system is ammonia and ammonium bisulfite with air / oxygen addition. An abrasive is added which greatly enhances the kinetics, and it is subsequently screened out and reused. The dissolved copper is easily recovered using existing technology. Extraction profiles, reagent consumptions, and mineralogical data are presented.

"Approximately 32 per cent of the worldÆs total gold production has come from greenstone belts (Frimmel, 2008). In these regions numerous small to large, quartz vein-associated gold deposits are hosted in metamorphic rocks ranging from lower greenschist to granulite facies. Historical exploration has focused its efforts on rocks of greenschist to lower amphibolite facies because these seem to contain the most deposits. Consequently, these regions are now reaching mature brownfield status, particularly in developed nations, and finding new deposits is becoming progressively more difficult. In comparison, regions of similar tectonic setting, but instead containing high-grade metamorphic rocks of mid-amphibolite to granulite facies, have received little attention because the first explorers found fewer deposits there.However, these regions certainly do contain some very significant gold deposits such as Hemlo in Canada (~684 t Au), Renco in Zimbabwe (~31 t Au mined since 1980), the very profitable Challenger deposit in South Australia (~36 t Au; recovered + reserve + resource), and the most recently discovered Tropicana deposit in Western Australia (~182 t Au; reserve + resource). High-grade metamorphic terrains therefore offer explorationists an excellent opportunity to move onto relatively green fields within developed nations, which carry less risk associated with development. However, explorationists have comparatively little knowledge of the geological controls on gold distribution in high-grade terranes because: industry experience lies in traditional lode-style gold deposits these gold deposits are geologically more complex there has simply been minimal research conducted on these deposits as a holistic group.Furthermore, research conducted in the last five years has shown us that the previous widely accepted model for gold genesis in these terranes, the crustal continuum model, is incorrect. Here, I discuss features from several gold deposits hosted in high-grade metamorphic rocks and use these to define two categories for explorationists to consider: deposits that formed prior to peak metamorphism (metamorphosed gold deposits) deposits that formed well after peak metamorphism (post-metamorphic gold deposits). "Modeling of the magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) and thermodynamical processes during the industrial scale Direct Chill (DC) casting of aluminum slabs is performed using a combination of ANSYS/CFX and ANSYS/EMAG software. The electromagnetic field is modeled through ANSYS/EMAG, while hydrodynamic and thermodynamic processes are modeled through ANSYS/CFX. Both packages were modified in order to calculate MHD flows in the liquid pool that forms during aluminum DC casting, and they were unified into a software combination that provides simultaneous simulation of all the above processes. The simulation shows that the electromagnetic stirring of the molten aluminum changes the shape of the solidification front (solid-liquid interface) very dramatically, namely it becomes significantly flatter. This effect should improve the internal structure of aluminum DC slabs and allows us to increase the casting velocity.IntroductionProduction of Aluminum alloys with high mechanical properties and structural uniformity is one of the main goals of industry. The preferred production method of aluminum alloys in most modern plants is Direct Chill (hereafter DC) casting because it offers high productivity and commercial success. One important limitation of this technology is the development of centerline shrinkage in slabs larger than about 1 meter. The improvement of the internal structure of long DC cast slabs can be achieved by electromagnetic stirring (hereafter ES) of the liquid metal above the solidification front. This intensifies heat transport in the zone close to the solidification front and suppresses shrinkage formation."

Shear slip of fractures in fractured rock masses is a critical issue for many geological engineering applications, such as the design of underground nuclear waste repositories, enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), and geosequestration of CO2. This paper presents new development of the TOUGH-UDEC simulator for analysis of coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical (THM) processes in fractured porous media. As an alternative to developing a single coupled THM code in discontinuum, two existing wellestablished codes, namely TOUGH2 and UDEC, are coupled to cover coupled THM analysis of multiphase fluid flow, heat transfer, and deformation in fractured porous media. TOUGH2 is widely used for modeling heat transfer and multiphase, multicomponent fluid flow, and UDEC is a well-known discrete element code for rock mechanics, which have been verified and used by many groups all over the world. Although a sequential coupling of two codes is less efficient than having a single code in principal, a big advantage with coupling of TOUGH2 and UDEC is that both codes are well tested and widely applied in their respective fields. When linking two codes, the coupled equations cannot be solved simultaneously; they should be solved sequentially, with coupling parameters passed to each equation at specific intervals. After solving thermal-hydraulic equations through the TOUGH2 model, pressure (P) and temperature (T) information is delivered to UDEC model. Pressure information is directly stored at the center of each UDEC zone and domain, however, temperature information is interpolated from zone-centers to the corners nodes. After solving the mechanical equation through the UDEC model—considering new pressure and temperature—calculated fracture apertures are converted to equivalent permeability and porosity for TOUGH2 flow analysis. The solution was calculated by iteratively following an explicit sequence for numerical efficiency. Verification examples are presented to demonstrate the capabilities of the coupled TOUGH-UDEC simulator.

The need to comply with environmental regulations and increase production has resulted in modifications to the East Penn blast furnace operation. Changes made include furnace design modifications, closed loop water cooling with heat recovery, automated weighing and charging, automated tuyere punching, ammonia scrubbing of tail gases and improved metal and slag handling to minimize environmental impact. These changes have resulted in a marked increase in yearly production and compliance with many of the air, water and solid waste regulations.

THE annual meeting of the A.I.M.E. was fittingly closed with a joint meeting of the Metropolitan sections of the four National societies on Feb. 18, at which this subject was adequately discussed by leading engineers before an audience that completely filled the Engineering Auditorium. The large amount of publicity that has been given the Diesel electric loco- motive, and the often garbled reports of its performance and possibilities that have been circulated, makes it particularly fitting that the facts should be given the profession as determined by those who have aided in developing and operating this latest form of prime- mover in railroad operation. C. A. Stein, general manager of the Central R. R. of New Jersey, opened the meeting with a discussion of the problem of electrification, and the relation of the short haul, switching, and terminal service to heavy electrification. Referring directly to the problem of the Central R. R. of New Jersey, some subtitution for the steam locomotive is necessary within the city limits of New York because of local ordinances against the smoke nuisance. While the improvement in the design of the steam locomotive has been marked-the efiiency today is over fifty times that of the locomotive of 100 years ago-it has now probably reached the point of maximum perfection. ALTHOUGH the zinc and pyrite concentrates produced at Midvale go to other companies, the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company smelts and refines its own lead. Refining is the first step of the process that is done at some distance from the mining operations, the plant being at East Chicago, Ind., an industrial center about 25 miles southeast of Chicago. For years it has been notable as being the only lead refinery in the country using the Betts electrolytic process. The original buildings, many of which are still in use, were erected in 1906 when the plant was known as the United States Metals Refining Co. In 1920 the parent company sold its copper refinery at Chrome, N. J., and since the copper refinery was also known as the U. S.

AN incomplete statistical analysis performed wearily on the morning after Thursday, Feb. 12, indicates that the unavoidable items of conversation among steelmen were the current shortage of sleeping time and the "Normandie." No analysis is needed, however, to be certain that many thousands of valuable words were uttered, both in and out of technical sessions, concerning matters of deep interest to members of the Iron and Steel Division. The opening session consisted mostly of papers that have appeared, or will appear shortly, in Metals Technology. One, however, that was not finished in time to be printed in any form, but that aroused great interest, was by E. L. Ramsey and L. G. Graper (Wisconsin Steel Works). Its subject was the production of high-sulphur steel by treatment with sulphur dioxide derived from anhydrous sodium sulphite or bisulphite added to the ladle or to the mold. The sulphide distribution in the finished steel is such that increased machinability and longer tool life result. Both items are of obvious importance in these days of mighty production.

AN historical society of particular interest to mining engineers all over the world was born in Cornwall in 1935. A hundred-year-old winding engine then finished its long labors at the Levant mine on the cliffs near Lands End, England. The engine was to be dismantled and scrapped. A few men living near-by, appreciating that this event was one of the final acts in closing a long century of extraordinary mining and engineering evolution. armed a committee to prevent the destruction of the old mine hoist and succeeded in purchasing the engine. They restored the engine house and in time arranged with the Manor of Trewellard, owners of the land, for a 99-year ground lease on a peppercorn rental.

Mining has been around for a long time, and new deposits are being discovered continually but are becoming more complex for processing and typically sulfide in nature. Most of the large easy deposits with simplified and cheaper to process oxide material have been mined or the deposits are locked up with legal or social issues and may never be mined. It is common to see the mines today being evaluated to mine have little in oxides and have a sulfide component to the deposit. This creates a problem with explosives being selected for the mine because ANFO could cause a reactive ground issue. When evaluating the cost component of mining for future mines, ANFO is the go-to selected bulk explosive because of the cost and effectiveness. More work needs to be done by projects evaluating costs by properly testing the ground and water conditions to match the correct bulk explosive for the ground conditions of the mine. This will prevent a possible safety hazard and the best result for the mine.

Assam cancer care foundation (ACCF) proposed the construction of hospitals and related facilities across 18 locations in the state of Assam-India. Tezpur is one among the 18 locations of Assam with high seismic risk. The strata at the site are comprised of mostly fine silty sands of lower SPT- N values. The water table is also encountered and ranging from 1 m to 2 m below EGL. Since the site lies in seismic zone V as per IS 1893, detailed liquefaction analysis is carried out for all five boreholes and indicates that soil is liquefiable and ground improvement is inevitable up to a depth of 15 m below existing ground level. To mitigate the liquefaction potential and enhance the seismic performance of the soil, ground improvement using stone columns by Wet top feed Vibro-replacement method is proposed. Also, the differential settlements can be avoided effectively under the raft foundation with Vibro Stone Columns. In this paper, field test validation results such as Pre and post-SPTs and ECPTs to access the extent of ground improvement, along with other information adopted in this project presented.

Single wavelength fluorescence sensing has been used in the preconcentration of ores for many years in situations where it is typically specific to the mineral of interest. Examples of fluorescence sensing include the sorting of diamonds in diamond mines and the sorting of scheelite in tungsten ores. However, the number of minerals that show useful single wavelength fluorescence properties in the visible spectrum is relatively small, so the application of fluorescence sensing is currently limited to niche application in the minerals industry. Recent developments at the University of Adelaide have focussed upon extending fluorescence signal measurements into the infrared spectrum, as well as investigating multi-wavelength fluorescence known as up-conversion fluorescence. These techniques may not only significantly increase the number of minerals that exhibit fluorescence properties suitable for both identification and sensor-based sorting, but also provide mineral-specific signatures of higher quality than previously attainable. This paper details the research work carried out by the University of Adelaide and funded by CRC ORE to develop a mineral-specific fluorescence sensor. The sensor targets two fluorine bearing minerals, fluorite and fluorapatite, that are common in many base metal ores such as porphyry copper ores and silver/lead/zinc ores. Fluorine is a known penalty element in mineral products derived from these ores, so mining companies need to monitor and control the amount of fluorine in their final product to keep it below commercially agreed specifications. Currently there is no real time sensor capable of monitoring fluorine in the ore feed so monitoring and control is carried out using time-consuming standard sampling and off-line laboratory measurements. The development and application of a real time fluorine sensor will enable the mining companies to monitor and control fluorine levels in the plant, greatly reducing the time and cost associated with producing their mineral concentrates within the prescribed specifications.

Hunt, the Iron and Steel Committee of the Institute, desiring to commemorate the great contributions made to the steel industry by Captain Hunt during his long career, conceived the idea of a Hunt Medal to be awarded annually by the Institute for meritorious contributions to the art of making steel. The project was received enthusiastically by all to whom it was proposed, especially by Captain Hunt&apos;s partners and employees who considered it their right, and asked for the privilege of -. - raising the necessary funds within their own circle. This was agreed to, and the Institute has received from them $7500 as an endowment fund to provide an annual award, and $1000 for the expenses of providing of medal.

The Victoria Park Tunnel project is an inner-city alliance project in central Auckland, New Zealand. The existing two-directional viaduct will be modified to single-direction flow, and a new northbound 440 m cut and cover tunnel will be constructed beneath Victoria Park. Three-dimensional (3D) visualisation media were used to communicate key design innovations to stakeholders and the general public. The 3D visual material has proven a useful tool for informing motorists of a new safety barrier method adopted for traffic management.This presentation will explain how 3D visualisation was incorporated in the project and will showcase the 3D visualisation media created for the project.

The surface zone of nickel laterite ore is generally considered as residue. However, because of the depletion of ore sources and the increase in demand, this previously discarded zone may now be processed economically for nickel and cobalt. After leaching and removal of the impurities, the solution contains cobalt, magnesium, manganese and nickel. Solvent extraction is a hydrometallurgical technique used in the separation of metals from aqueous solutions. Cyanex 272 and D2EHPA are extractants used to separate nickel from cobalt. The mixture of extractants can change the performance during the metals extraction. This work aims to evaluate the solvent extraction of nickel and cobalt when Cyanex 272 and D2EHPA are mixed. The results showed that the increased concentration of D2EHPA in the organic phase increased the extraction of nickel and magnesium. However, cobalt extraction was reduced and the manganese extraction was not altered.
