One of the major challenges for the Canadian Gen IV Super-Critical Water-cooled Reactor (SCWR) concept is the selection of fuel cladding materials. The Canadian SCWR concept will operate at a core outlet temperature of 625 oC and 25 MPa of pressure with peak cladding temperature reaching as high as 800 oC. Corrosion resistance is an important factor for material selection. Austenitic stainless steels that contain Cr contents greater than 18 wt.% are generally considered to provide adequate corrosion resistance. In this work, the pressure dependence of the corrosion of austenitic stainless steel 310 containing 24 wt% Cr is assessed at 625 C for exposures of 1000 hours to evaluate the suitability of superheated steam as a surrogate for supercritical water at 25 MPa. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) revealed that 310 exposed to different pressure conditions at 625 oC. (i.e., 0.1, 8 and 29 MPa) had generally the same type of the oxide structure, i.e., a Cr-rich oxide with the spinel structure on outer surface adjacent to the water phase. The material exposed at 8 and 29 MPa had a double layer oxide structure, with the outer oxide layer having a much larger grain size, while the samples exposed at 0.1 MPa showed only a single spinel-phase oxide layer. Cr-depleted recrystallized austenite grains were found underneath the spinel phase oxide. The adjacent large-grained austenite substrate had M23C6 carbides in the grain interior. The implications of these results are discussed.

As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines-sponsored project on the utilization of "stiff" backfill to minimize potential rock burst hazards, a finite element study was undertaken to predict stresses and displacements around a stope mined up from the 5400 level of the Sunshine mine, Kellogg, Idaho. This stope was to be backfilled using a high-modulus fill. In preparation for that configuration, certain instrumentation was installed near the 5400 level to monitor stress changes. Due to untenable economics, only 2 cuts of the stope were ever made. This paper presents the results of the instrument readings taken during the first cut and compares them with the numerical predictions, as well as presents the modeling results of closure and fill stresses in the stope if it had been mined.

Mr. Neilson was born Aug. 12, 1842, at Philadelphia, Pa., where he died Dec. 30, 1906. His business career began with his graduation, in the class of 1862, from the Polytechnic College of the State of Pennsylvania. For a short time after graduation he was instructor in mathematics at the college, and then became associated with Messrs. Booth & Garrett, chemists, of his native city. In 1867 he was sent to the Adirondack mountains to care for mining interests of the late Jay Cooke, and spent about three years there, operating the forges at Elizabethtown, Essex county, N. Y. He also prepared an interesting monograph on Catalan forges and their operations. In 1868 he published a chart showing the material progress of the United States, and the cost of certain staple products during a series of years, which is believed to be the first of its kind issued in this country. In 1870 he made a trip to the Pacific Coast, prior to entering the service of the Pennsylvania Steel Company.

W. M. Williams (McGill University)-The authors are to be congratulated on completing this detailed investigation of recrystallization behavior. The present writer has recently completed some research at the University of Toronto on the recrystallization and grain growth behavior of a number of "pure" irons, and he would like to take issue with the authors' contention that recrystallization cannot be followed by means of hardness measurements. Two series of specimens of Ferrovac E, a com- mercially available iron, were annealed to complete recrystallization at 525" and 620" C, measurements being made both of Rockwell hardness and of volume percent recrystallized as a function of annealing time. Good correlation was found between these two quantities and, following the earlier practice of Cook and Richards for copper, hardness measurements were used in an extensive investigation of recrystallization. No anomalous behavior was observed as a result of this practice. Specimens which showed complete softening always showed, (metallographically and by X-rays), completely re-crystallized structures. Prior to January, 1986, the city of Austin, Texas was on notice by the Federal Government's Environmental Protection Agency and the Texas Water Commission, that they were illegally polluting the Colorado River. The wastewater facilities presently in use in South Austin were inadequate to handle the vastly increasing population. The city of Austin, Texas hired Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade and Douglas, Inc. and Dannenbaum Engineering Corporation to design and supervise the construction of an update to their existing system to alleviate this problem. A major criterion handed down to the Designer and Contractor was that the system had to be completed within a two year time frame. The biggest link to the entire design was a tunnel project consisting of 43,000 linear feet (13,106 m) of tunnel, eight feet (2.44 m) in diameter with connecting structures tying into existing and future facilities. The project was awarded to S. A. Healy Construction Company of McCook, Illinois with a low bid of $24,755,000.00. This article summarizes the techniques used in the construction of this tunnel project.

Being inclined to metaphors, one could be forgiven to think that politicians act this verb and captain the Nation's ship into some definite course. In the case of at least the mineral resources industry, it seems that there are not many James Cook followers in our parliaments: Australia's approach to mineral and energy policy is often chaotic - witness the 1935 to 1961 ban on iron ore export-ing which prevented the development of a significant steel industry at time when the World was hungry for this metal, just to mention one amongst many other examples.The follies of Australia's mineral policies are well il-lustrated in the case of uranium mining. Although Australia had the Western World's largest economic reserves of uranium, it is onlythefifth producing nation and its uranium potential is largely unrealised. At the root of this situation are the interventionist attitudes and policies of successive Federal Governments which for more than four decades distorted the Investment decision and, in more recent times. discouraaed investment.

The plant was designed and constructed under the direction of the writer. Ground was broken Apr. 16, 1912, and exactly six months later the plant was in operation and lead was being cast. The capacity of the plant, running 25 days per month, is 5,000 tons. The four products of the plant are common lead, corroding lead, antimonial lead, and Dore bullion. The site is an area, 64 acres in extent, lying north of 151st Street, between McCook Avenue and the Canal. The Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad, Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal, and Pennsylvania Railroad enter the yard at the plant. There are five storage tracks and space for storing 100 cars in the yard. the main lead to the storage tracks passes over a 100-ton track scale on entering the yard.

Several years ago, Mr. Robert A. Cook described and illustrated in our Transactions a mechanical coke-drawer, patented in 1891 by Mr. Thomas Smith of the Thorncliff Iron Works, Sheffield, England, and first introduced in the United States in 1896, at the coking-plant of the Latrobe Coal Co., Latrobe,Pa. This machine has not received any very extended application in this country, although it was successfully used in two places for a number of years. The present paper describes a new and simpler machine, containing few wearing-parts, and capable of withstanding continued rough usage. Anything which tends to prolong the general use of bee-hive ovens will be welcome to those who are interested in cheapening the cost of producing coke in such ovens, especially if it provides satisfactory mechanical means, replacing the hard labor involved in drawing coke by hand with the old-fashioned " duck bill." For more cost effective strata control, a fundamental understanding of the behavior of the support system is needed. To assist in this understanding for shield supports, behavior of a four-leg shield design used on a soft floor in an operating longwall system is presented. The shield was constructed having a split base and a split caving shield. Attention is focused on other-than-normal loading on the canopy and its effect on deformation of the lemniscate links. Examples of the typical bending and twisting deformations are given. Schematics of the canopy, caving shield, and lemniscates showing important forces and moments are presented. Approximate minimum values of the forces and moments are calculated. The need for use of more inclusive three-dimensional design techniques is demonstrated.

For too long we, as an industry, have borne the brunt of irrational claims, poor science and even worse, journalism with regards to our affect on the environment. To some of us, the overwhelming media attention on greenhouse warming, the polluting outputs of mineral processing or unthinkable depletion of natural resources has left us embarrassed and more unfortunately has turned bright young people away from a career in the minerals industry.This paper shows the hypocrisy associated with an element of the green movement and dispels some general myths on mining disseminated by radical environmentalists.The fallacy of the greenhouse warming effect will be scrutinised by common sense and the mining industryÆs use of land will be discussed and put in proper perspective.Problems associated with safety and emissions and the means to overcome such are discussed briefly.

Phosphate induced stabilisation has been used to create passive iron phosphate coatings on pyrite and pyrrhotite. The formation of solid phosphate coatings on sulfide grains thereby inhibits sulfide oxidation. The aims of the study were to determine whether phosphate induced stabilisation could control sulfide oxidation and metal mobility in partly oxidised, polymineralic, sulfidic mine wastes. Waste materials were obtained from the acid mine drainage generating, abandoned Montalbion silver mine site, far north Queensland, Australia. The waste consists of quartz, kaolinite/illite, sulfide minerals (galena, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, sphalerite, pyrite, arsenopyrite), and pre- and post-mining oxidation products (hydrated Fe, Cu, Pb and alkali mineral salts). SEM observations of waste material treated with potassium orthophosphate showed that metal, metal-alkali and alkali phosphate coatings developed on all sulfides (with the exception of tetrahedrite). The abundance of phosphate phases was dependant on the availability of cations in solution for complexation with the phosphate anion. In turn, the release of cations was dependent on sulfide oxidation or the dissolution of efflorescent mineral salts. Experiments aiming to dissolve these phosphate coatings û using a strongly oxidising solution û showed that the phosphate coatings remained stable, preventing acid generation and metal release. The results of this study demonstrate that liquid phosphate stabilisers can suppress sulfide oxidation and immobilise metals in partly oxidised, polymineralic mine wastes.

"In Chile, the evaluation to reprocess tailings for elements other than the traditional Cu, Mo, Au, and Ag, as well as projects to implement long-term monitoring of mining residue sites are key elements of the government’s roadmap laid out for the mining industry for the next two decades. Characterization routines for tailings and mining residues in general have to be adapted from traditional ore and gangue mineral and micro-chemical studies. This contribution summarizes key aspects for the regional mining industry for a basic characterization of tailings with emphasis on small- to medium-size operations with limited in-house facilities and funds to carry out extensive characterization programs. The oldest tailings in Chile were deposited almost a century ago; this fact gives importance to the recovery of past ore /gangue feed information, process circuits and changes (e.g. acid to alkaline flotation), process water provenance and recovery, meteorological registers, and routines of filling a tailings impoundment. Basic characterization should include X-ray fluorescence spectrometry combined with laser diffraction (LD) granulometry followed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM) and automated mineral analysis (AMA) on a reduced set of samples identified by hierarchical cluster analysis. For this detailed stage, only coarse tailings are recommended for direct a study by microscopy and automated mineralogy (P80 >100 µm); for fine tailings (P80 ~30 µm) a combination of XRD and deposit type adapted sequential extraction are more informative options. In particular, for XRD of clay phases, losses of crystallinity may result in deviation of spectra from standard reference phases due to prolonged storage. To monitor surface alteration, scanning electron microscopy can be complemented by Raman spectroscopy to detect residual reagents on mineral surfaces. For reactivity modeling BET measurements are essential."

Dr. K. A. Clark: No one will doubt the statement of fact that, during drilling operations through the bituminous sand beds in the Mildred-Ruth Lakes area, the core-barrel was found to contain bitumen with minor amounts of sand instead of bituminous sand. But many will doubt the interpretation of this fact as meaning that beds of bitumen occur interstratified with the bituminous sand beds. They will prefer to hold faith in the laws of physics, which deny that sand will float on oil or that fluid under pressure will not flow away through a permeable medium, until it is proved that the appearance of the oil in the core-barrel was not due to circumstances surrounding the drilling of the bituminous sand beds. The implication of the interpretation that sand is floating on oil is clear and it is unacceptable. Bituminous sand is unconsolidated sand more' or less saturated with a viscous oil. It is as difficult to conceive of bituminous sand lying on top of a body of the viscous oil as it is to conceive of unconsolidated sand more or less saturated with water lying on top of a body of water. The only difference between the two concepts is that the oil is viscous whereas the water is fluid. Oil-soaked sand placed on viscous oil would, when released, sink through the oil slowly, whereas water-soaked sand would sink through the water quickly.
