This report summarizes the results of a review of foreign coal mining literature conducted under the Bureau's Advancing Coal Mining Technology program. In addition to a discussion on the historical development of mechanized longwall systems, and the current state-of-the-art method in Europe, this report summarizes the previous and ongoing Bureau efforts to adapt longwall technology to U.S. conditions. The bibliographic section of this report, divided into major categories such as mine design, face management, roadway development, strata control, powered roof supports, coal winning, conveying, and automation, contains over a thousand individual entries. The purpose of this report is to provide U.S. mining engineers with background information on longwall methodology and equipment developed in foreign countries (principally Europe). The Bureau of Mines, as part of its Advancing Coal Mining Technology program, is funding R&D projects to demonstrate that the longwall mining method, successfully used in the deep mines of Europe, can boost productivity and improve safety in certain U.S. mines.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines contracted a study to review the air and water monitoring requirements of five Federal environmental acts (the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) and to compile information on the currently available monitoring instruments. A literature review of the acts and their associated regulations was conducted to determine applicability to the mining industry as well as any air and water monitoring requirements. In addition, an industry search and literature review was performed to assess the instrumentation available to comply with the monitoring regulations. Based on this research, the instruments are classified by general applicability to air, surface water, or ground water monitoring, then catalogued by monitoring parameters. A discussion is provided on recommended and innovative monitoring techniques.

This Bureau of Mines report is a reference manual of procedures used by the Bureau's Twin Cities Mining Research Center for obtaining rock properties. Included in the report are discussions on the usage of each property, descriptions of the general test methods for obtaining the properties, and instructions for performing the tests. The Instructions embrace details of the specimen configuration, test apparatus, test procedure, test conditions, and calculations needed to achieve satisfactory results. Although the procedures presented in this reference manual generally conform to recommendations of the ASTM Administrative Committee on Standards, they are not purported to be standards.

The 1965 Lignite Symposium, the fourth in a series and the third sponsored by the University of North Dakota and the Bureau of Mines, was held at Bismarck, N. Dak., on April 29-30, 1963. Them 7 symposia provide a forum for those interested in the technology and utilization of solid fuels, especially lignitic coals. As part of the meeting, a 200-mile field trip was taken including inspection of (1) the 200-megawatt, pulverized Lignite-fired Leland Olds plant of Basin Electric Power Cooperative, under construction near Stanton, N. Dak.; (2) the site of the Glenharold mine of the. Truax-Traer Goal Co., Division of Consolidation Coal Co., where a wheel excavator was being assembled; (3) the operating Beulah mine of Knife River Coal Mining Co., subsidiary of Montana-Dakota Utilities Co., near Beulah, N. Dak.; and (4) the 400-megawatt, hydro-electric Garrison Dam powerplant, near Garrison, N. Dak.

The results of a comprehensive investigation of conveyance arrestment devices (safety catches) in United States coal mines are presented. Availability and use, performance, inspection, maintenance, testing, procedures, and regulatory requirements were investigated. Information was obtained from equipment manufacturers, mine operators, and regulatory-agency personnel, as well as from studies of domestic and foreign mining safety regulations. Traditional mine hoists and commercial elevators for mine use were investigated. Results of this and an earlier study of wire-rope practice in United States coal mines show a continued need for conveyance arrestment devices. A wide variety of these devices are in use. Only two types have been proved reliable for stopping a conveyance without injuring passengers or equipment. These are elevator overspeed-actuated wedge-clamp (Type B) safeties and broken-rope-actuated devices for wooden guides using a single-tooth-dog design developed in Ontario as a braking element. Elevators are widely used in U. S. coal mines. When maintained according to American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Specifications A17. I and A17. 2, they appear to present no major arrestment problems. Of 42 coal-mine hoists used for man transport that were inspected, 30 are in vertical and 12 in inclined shafts. Twenty-four vertical shafts use wood guides; 6 use steel. The 12 inclined-shaft systems use flanged-wheel T-rail guidance. Two wood-guided vertical-shaft systems use the single-tooth Ontario-type dog; the other 22 use multi-toothed wedges, cams, or dogs that have been proved highly unreliable. The arrestment devices in the six steel-guided vertical-shaft systems and in six of the inclined-shaft systems cannot be evaluated because performance data are lacking. The remaining six inclined-shaft systems have no arrestment devices at all. Of the 36 hoists with arrestment devices, the devices of 16 are never tested, the devices of 10 are actuated periodically with the conveyance at rest, and the devices of the other 10 are actuated periodically with a slow-moving conveyance. Although high speed is as probable as low speed in an emergency and would provide the best test of arrestment capability, no tests are performed in the United States which demonstrate the ability of an arrestment device to stop a loaded conveyance from high speed. Mine operators indicate little confidence in their conveyance arrestment devices, and manufacturers recognize a need to improve their products. Neither state nor Federal regulations provide a guide to this improvement. Mine operators, manufacturers, and state and Federal regulatory agency personnel would welcome specific guidance. In view of this, a set of application, design, actuation, stopping-performance, and testing and inspection criteria is presented as a guide to eliminating the inadequacies of these devices. Recommendations are included for improving hoist controls and machinery directly affecting conveyance safety.

This report briefly describes the broad program of research and technologic work conducted by the Bureau of Mines on coal and related subjects during 1966. In addition to n description of investigations on mining, preparation, and utilization of coal, an account is given of the Bureau's work in mine health and safety, coal resources, mine explosives, and environmental conditions relating to coal mining and utilization. Details of most of the projects are reported in publications cited throughout this report. Centers and laboratories conducting the coal research and related investigations appear in appendix A; organizations, institutions , and companies contributing to the Bureau's coal research and technologic program are listed in appendix B.

The utilization of large diameter drilled holes for mine shafts seems to have had its beginning in Europe about 1850 (28) where the mining industries of Germany and The Netherlands first used drilled shafts. Recent shafts in softer formations of diameters as large as 25 feet and as deep as 1, 700 feet have been drilled in both The Netherlands and Germany. The first shaft drillers utilized cable tool or churn drilling techniques which limit both hole diameters and drilling speeds. Though some churn drilling of shafts is still performed, rotary drilling has been the dominant technique for many years.

This report details work performed and results obtained in a study of the water management aspects of oil shale mining and retorting in the Piceance Creek Basin. Three specific sites were investigated, and optimal water management systems for both conventional and in-situ extraction processes were generated. Water-related legal and environmental constraints on development were identified and the water management schemes were developed in compliance with these regulations. Limitations on shale oil production implied by limited water supplies were evaluated. Potential Basin-wide effects of development were evaluated using a computer model, and mitigation strategies were developed. Recommendations for additional investigation and analyses were presented.

This circular is intended to present in brief form the statutory provisions of Pennsylvania regarding mining operations, in force at the end of the 1931 session of the legislature. lo reference is made to general laws which affect mining only incidentally in common with other subjects, such as the workmens compensation law. The statements have been condensed as far as practicable, and provisions not deemed of general interest, such as matters dealing only with administrative details, have been omitted. This circular obviously is not written with such particularity as to be of great value to the legal profession, but it is hoped that it will be beneficial to the mining industry in giving this information in a relatively compact form. At the end of each paragraph the statute from which it is derived is cited to facilitate reference to the text of the law. It is planned to publish additional circulars from time to time dealing with the mining laws of other States. Any criticisms of the form of publica- tion followed herein, or suggestions aimed at the improvement of future circulars, will be welcomed.

This job was done in Morristown, NJ, with mono fluid system jet grouting for the construction of a new bank building. After the demolition of the existing two story structures, an excavation in loose sandy fill materials was necessary in order to reach the new structure basement level. Due to this jet grouting was selected as a medium to provide both excavation support and permanent underpinning, minimizing the adjacent building settlements. These two adjacent buildings were partially underpinned with a "gravity wall" made with 2 and 3 rows of secant vertical and inclined jet grout columns. Besides the classical jet grouting control methods, during the jet grouting execution, all the drilling and grouting parameters were recorded by a proprietary system called "Slogger". Additionally, after the jet grouting execution, an innovative result control technique was used by means of the application of the same parameter recording system. Some of the production columns were re-drilled and a comparison was made between the obtained drilling parameters and those obtained for the same age test columns. Under the referred existing conditions and in comparison with the conventional underpinning techniques, this project demonstrated that jet grouting, with proper execution and result control, can be faster than them and can maintain the building structural stability and act, at the same time, as a retention system minimizing the existing building settlements.

The thermodynamic properties for the CaO-CaF2and CaO-BaO systems were calculated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation using Born-Mayer-Huggins type pair potential. The parameters of interatomic potential were obtained by fitting the thermodynamics properties of CaO, CaF2and BaO with the experimental data. The phase diagrams for the CaO-CaF2 and CaO-BaO systems were calculated by the thermodynamic properties obtained by MD simulation. The eutectic composition and temperature of the CaO-CaF2system calculated by MD simulation were about 28 mole per cent CaO and 1575K, respectively. The calculated eutectic point agrees very well with experimental data, which are about 22 mole per cent CaO and 1633K, respectively. Many years ago, a relationship was established between dust inhalation and pneumoconiosis. Since then, various government agencies have regulated crystalline and amorphous forms of silica material in the workplace. In 1987, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified crystalline silica as a probable carcinogen. With this listing, crystalline silica became a regulated substance under the Hazard Communication Standard. The minerals and chemicals industries have responded in various ways. They have: • developed worker and user training programs and literature; • labeled products with appropriate warnings; • continued to implement dust reduction programs; and • developed meaningful epidemiological studies of workers. • begun development of reliable analytical methods for measuring crystalline silica at the 0.1 % threshold level; Background Silicosis historically has been the major health hazard resulting from exposure to crystalline silica. Silicosis is the scarring of the lung from excessive exposure to crystalline silica. It has been recognized as an occupational disease for more than 2000 years, since early Greek physicians noted the respiratory problems of miners, stonecutters, and quarrymen who were exposed to excessive quantities of mineral dust. During the industrial revolution, the incidence of the disease was greatly increased by the use of machinery that increased dust levels. Subsequently, the need for dust control was recognized and measures were instituted. Silicosis is characterized by progressive breathlessness on exertion and develops over the course of years. An overview is given of the matte melting process used for the beneficiation of South African Platinum Group Metal (PGM) ores. Most producers use six-electrode furnaces to melt the concentrate and Pierce Smith converters to oxidize excess iron sulphide from the furnace matte. Concentrates from two reef-types (the so-called Merensky and UG-2 reefs) dominate the feedstock supply. Concentrate from the Merensky reef is low in chromium and do not pose significant melting problems. Concentrates from the UG-2 reef contain much higher levels of chromium, which results in the formation of chromium-rich spinels during melting. This is attributed to the low solubility of chromium in furnace slag under typical operating conditions (an oxygen partial pressure of 10-8-10-9bar at temperatures of 1550°C to 1600°C). During the converting process care is needed to avoid excessively oxidizing conditions, which result in cobalt, nickel and copper losses to the slag. High nickel losses result in the formation ofFe2NiO4(trevorite), which often forms solid solutions with FeCr2O4and Fe3O4. In future, the main challenge in the processing of South African PGM ores will be to cope with ever increasing levels of chromium in the concentrate. A short-term solution to the problem would be to melt the concentrate under slightly reducing conditions to promote the formation of CrO, which is more soluble in the slag than Cr2O3. A longer-term solution to the problem would be to abandon the current matte-smelting process in favour of an alloy-based process, which would offer total flexibility with respect to the amount of chromium that can be tolerated in the feed. There is a saying, ?If it moves, it vibrates.? This is especially true in our modern industrial environments, where workers use powered tools, machinery, vehicles, and heavy equipment. How workers are affected by these elements of the industrial working environment is a concern of health professionals, govern­ments, and scientists around the world. How to adequately assess the effects of human vibration exposure is an equally important issue. The human body comprises a dynamic structure that is living, intelligent, and complex. Consequently, it is not unreasonable to consider that exposing the body to an array of vibration environments would result in outcomes that are not necessarily simple or easily predictable. Sensations caused by vibration may include nausea, annoyance, discomfort or pain, and exhilaration or pleasure. Many factors contribute to the effects of vibration on humans, including the characteristics of the motion and the exposed indi­vidual, the activities of the exposed individual, and various elements of the environment. There have been attempts to summarize the effects of occupational vibration exposures by simply recommending the avoidance of certain frequencies of vibration or by providing a graphical method, i.e., a single curve displaying all human responses to all frequencies. However, such efforts have not withstood the scrutiny of scientific research and analysis. Thus, attendees and participants at this professional gathering now have the rare opportunity to benefit from the technological advances and new scientific research to enhance their understanding of human responses to vibration that suggest more than a simplistic approach. In the tradition of the First American Conference on Human Vibration (1st ACHV) held in Morgantown, WV, June 2006, the 2nd ACHV provides a forum for scientists, engineers, medical doctors, industrial hygienists, and educators to learn and advance research and education in the specialized area of human body vibration. The conference was organized by the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department, University of Illinois at Chicago, with support from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. As with the first conference, the 2nd ACHV provides the unique opportunity to learn about the current activities of peers and colleagues and to exchange information on topics of interest such as human response, human modeling, experimental design, sensors, new technologies, and epidemiological studies of human responses to hand-transmitted and whole-body vibration. The conference organizers hope that the publication of these conference proceedings continues to foster new research and technological advances to reduce health hazards associated with occupational vibration exposures.

Part of a major sewer expansion for the City of Columbus, Ohio. The Big Walnut Outfall Augmentation Sewer?Part II (BWOAS) consists of 13,200 feet of tunnel of 12-foot tunnel passing mainly through glacial deposits with a water head of up to 2 bar. A Lovat RME167SE was used to drive this tunnel with steel fiber reinforced precast segmental liner used for support. This paper will discuss the concepts for tunnel sup-port and TBM selection, the problems encountered with the TBM sealing systems and the solutions used to repair the machine.

As a part of its overall wealth in fuel resources, the United States possesses large reserves of coal of ignite rank. According to recent estimates of the Federal Geological Survey (3, 5),l/ the assured lignite reserves of this country amount in total to over 463 billion tons, equivalent to 24 percent of our total national coal reserve on a tonnage basis and 15 percent on a heating-value basis. Distribution and relative amounts of United States coal and lignite reserves are indicated in figure 1. By far the largest proportion of our lignite reserves, over 95 percent is found in North Central States, principally in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana, in the vast coal-bearing structural grouping designated as the Fort Union formation. Of the remaining United States reserves, all but a fraction of 1 percent are found in a series of relatively scattered deposits in Texas.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specificetiona that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the fusing temperature of ash and the free-swelling index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, end that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions3/ issued by the Bureau; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau's laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and "tipple" samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered 1s a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.
