In Tunisia, the Paleocene-Eocene series has an important socio-economic interest. It contains profitable oil and water accumulations. Moreover, it encompasses phosphate reserves. The present study uses seismic reflection prospection and borehole data for the reconstitution of the Paleocene-Eocene deposit structure in the Jerid area (southwestern Tunisia), a crucial step for the phosphate exploitation. Firstly, lithostratigraphic correlations incorporating water and petroleum wells were established according to different directions for a tentative approximation of the Paleocene- Eocene deposit geometry by following their lateral evolution. To give more details, seismic reflection profiles were interpreted in the second step. The Paleocene-Eocene formations were associated with their corresponding reflectors on the closest seismic profile using the relation of time and depth in petroleum wells. Analysis of lithostratigraphic correlations shows notable variations in the Paleocene-Eocene series thickness and depth. Seismic profile interpretation explains these variations by highlighting different buried tectonic features. The results confrontation reveals that the phosphatic deposit geometry in the Jerid area is mainly influenced by the (1) emergence of the Saharan platform and the Chott northern chain since the Late Cretaceous, (2) syn-sedimentary normal activity of E-W and NE-SW faults during the Paleocene-Eocene epoch, (3) reverse-reactivation of these faults, and (4) major Tortonian folding phase. This study can enormously enhance the Jerid area socio-economic development by presenting useful findings that may orientate the phosphate exploration.

Uranium solvent extraction, USX has been applied commercially for recovery and concentration for over 50 years. Uranium in acidic liquor, which is prepared following ore leaching, solid/liquid separation and clarification, can be treated through a sequence of operations; extraction-scrubbing-stripping, to obtain purified liquor. USX has dominated the primary uranium industry as the preferred technological route to converter grade yellowcake. The practices of design and operation of USX facilities has found renewed interest as new mines are developed following decades of industry dormancy. This article seeks to outline principles of design and operation from the practitioner’s perspective. The discussion also reviews historical developments of USX applications and highlights recent innovations. This review is hoped to provide guidance for technical personnel who wish to learn more about good practices that leads to reliable USX performance.

Different reefs being extracted from a mine will, in all likelihood, have significantly different semi-variogram models - and these will probably vary from geozone to geozone. As errors of estimation are dependent on the semi- variogram parameters, it follows, if a mine samples all reefs in all sections using the same sampling grid pattern, that estimation errors (or limits of confidence) will not be the same throughout the mine. This may be an undesirable situation! A geostatistical study of the relative merits of alternative sampling arrangements has been carried out by considering different reefs in different sections of a South African gold mine.

The Tom's Gully gold mine is located 90km ESE from Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. The orebody is the auriferous portion of a large sulphide rich quartz reef, hosted in the Wildman Siltstone Formation of the Early Proterozoic Pine Creek Inlier, at the NH extremity of the Mount Bundey granite-syenite intrusion. It was discovered by Carpentaria Exploration Company Pty Ltd on November 17th, 1986, using stream sediment geochemistry.The reef is 800m long at surface, strikes E-H and dips approximately 300 to the south, becoming progressively less steep. Only the eastern half of the reef is auriferous, with gold grades averaging 9 g/t plus anomalous silver, base metals and arsenic.The enclosing siltstone is a dark grey banded carbonaceous and pyritic metapelite, showing areenschist regional metamorphism and thermal effects from the adjacent pluton. Local folding plunging gently SW is cut by a south dipping fault, probably a thrust, in which the reef was later formed at about the time of the granitic intrusion. É conhecido que a qualidade das matérias-primas utilizadas nos processos siderúrgicos pode interferir nos impactos ambientais de seus processos. No caso do processo de sinterização, a presença de elementos traços está ligada a composição de sua carga. Com o objetivo de determinar quais elementos irão compor as emissões atmosféricas, resíduos, efluentes e produtos faz necessário estudar o modo de ocorrência dos elementos traços em cada insumo. A interação entre as propriedades de cada elemento e as condições de massa e termodinâmicas permitem o estudo de seu comportamento e partição. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é levantar o estado da arte da sinterização de minério de ferro e suas emissões, estudando a origem, o comportamento e a partição de elementos traços e radionuclídeos, quando submetidos às condições do referido processo.

Nowadays, population growth and the interest of food industry, makes the research and applications of biodegradable polymers increase, because under favorable conditions its degradations may occur within weeks or in a few months, reducing the environmental impact. This work presents the processing and characterization of flexible films by the incorporation of 3 % (% wt) of modified bentonite light green clay in the Copolyester/PLA biodegradable blend. The clay incorporation was carried out by melt-mixing processing, using a twin screw extruder machine. The films were obtained by cast extrusion tape. The films obtained were submitted to tensile tests, SEM and XRD analysis, and the correlation between their properties was discussed. The XRD results of clay showed that the quaternary salt and sodium carbonate addition increased the interlayer distance of clay making it easier to intercalation of blend in the nanoclay. The XRD results of PBAT/PLA/Clay nanocomposite show no characteristic organoclay peaks. This result suggests intercalation between nanoclay and matrix (blend). The tensile test results showed an increase of around 30% in tensile strength at break of nanocomposite film when compared with blend film.

This report contains the results of a technical and economic evaluation of conceptual systems for the underground mining, rubblization, and in situ retorting of deep oil shale deposits. Study efforts were first directed towards evaluation of the applicable geology, associated minerals, rock mechanics, in situ retorting, access mining, ventilation, rubblization, safety, and environmental impact factors. Conceptual systems were synthesized and then evaluated against these factors from both a technical and limited economic viewpoint. The results of these evaluations were then analyzed and, based upon this analysis, the following two systems were selected for further study: System II: Room and Pillar-Vertical Drill and Blast System IV: Tunnel Boring-Horizontal Ring Drill and Blast Due to the large number of variables to be considered, a computer program was developed and utilized to provide data for the cost trade-off studies and economic analysis. Results of the early computer runs indicated the value of the tool available? in the computer program and led to an extension in the contract to determine the sensitivity of the systems to several of the more apparent significant variables. These results in turn led to a refinement in the design assumptions and a better understanding of the technical and economic options available to an owner-operator of a Vertical Modified In Situ Shale Oil Extraction System. "SUMMARYThe K.M.A. reservoir was discovered to be oil bearing at a depth of 3,719 feet on March 11, 1931. Extensive development, however, was not begun immediately, because the discovery well had a low initial daily oil production, and market conditions for oil were unfavorable. Development of the field progressed slowly for the next 6 1/2 years. In the latter part of 1937, a wildcat well approximately 2 miles southwest of the discovery well was drilled on a magnetometer high and completed with an initial flowing production of 2,016 barrels of 43° A.P.I.-gravity oil in 12 hours. Rapid development of the southwestern part of the K.M.A. field was begun immediately and continued until over 700 wells were drilled and approximately 12,500 acres proved oil productive.Because of the large size of the entire K.M.A. field, this report is limited in scope to the southwestern part only, and the discussion that follows pertains to this area only. The closing date for production statistics is August 1, 1949.The K.M.A. structure is a complex anticline having a maximum closure of 250 feet, and the K.M.A. formation is composed of sediments that grade from limestone through sandy lime and limy sand to sandstone with thin streaks of shale. Two distinct members of the K.M.A. formation, zone I and zone II, are oil productive. Core analyses indicate the average porosity to be 16.5 percent for zone I and 16.1 percent for zone II. A relationship was established from core data, which showed the correlative permeabilities to be 42.1 millidarcys for zone I and 39.5 millidarcys for zone II, whereas the arithmetical averages of the permeabilities were 84 millidarcys for zone I and 216 millidarcys for zone II. Connate water saturations were 17.5 percent for zone I and 20.0 percent for zone II. The porosity-saturation method, using a thickness-correction factor, was employed to calculate the volume c 168.1 million barrels of stock-tank oil initially in place in the reservoir. Analyses of the reservoir oilIn that, although the initial reservoir pressure was 1,750 p.s.i., the original reservoir oil was saturated to only 1,300 at which pressure 1 barrel of stock,tank oil contained 525 cubic feet of gas in solution.A serious decline in reservoir pressure during the 2 years of rapid development alarmed the operators and caused them to consider a cooperative pressure-maintenance program. In the latter part of 1939, the K.M.A. Pressure Maintenance Association was organized, and the gasoline plants in the field agreed to process the wet gas and return the dry gas to leases having gas-injection wells. Approximately 27 percent of the cumulative volume of produced gas had been returned to the reservoir by August 1, 1949."

The determination of the heavy minerals in beach sand samples is highly dependent on the preparation technique used. In this paper a simple reproducible method for the quantification of "recoverable" ilmenite, zircon, rutile and leucoxene by magnetic separation, is described. The procedure recommended yields information relevant to the metallurgical processing of the ore rather than to the total heavy minerals present in the samples. Finally the determination of mineral reserve estimations and grade assessments is greatly facilitated when this "mineral assay" method is employed. An assortment of other mineralogical methods are described including SEM, EMPA, XRD, XRF, Image analysis, Mossbauer. clerici and perm roll separations. The methods are briefly examined and the practical information that can be gained by using such techniques are reviewed. Experience has shown that an understanding of the relationship between the physical and chemical properties of the heavy minerals can contribute to the prediction of mineral particle behaviour. Such information may ultimately help reduce the prospect evaluation period and minimise expenditure on metallurgical testwork.

"Abstract - The Matheson area of northeastern Ontario is of great interest for mineral explo­ ration because of its geological similarities with the adjacent Timmins, Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake gold camps. Exploration in the area, however, is hampered by the presence of an extensive and thick cover of glacial sediments. For this reason, till geochemistry has be­ come an important exploration method. The Ontario Geological Survey&apos;s Black River -Matheson (BRiM) reconnaissance till sampling project, carried out between 1984 and 1988, was designed to aid exploration in the Matheson area by documenting the Quaternary stratigraphy and providing a database of till geochemistry. Till samples were collected by backhoe trenching of surface pits in areas of thin drift ( < 5 m) and by sonic overburden drilling in areas of thicker drift. This paper summarizes the results from the shallow till sampling component of the BRiM project.Two hundred and eighty-two surface samples were collected from Matheson Till, the youngest till sheet in the area, which was deposited during the Late Wisconsinan. For each sample, the non-magnetic heavy mineral (>3.3 S.G.) and fine (-250 mesh) till fractions were analyzed geochemically. In addition, visible gold grains were recovered by panning the heavy mineral fraction. Five areas that display multi-element anomalies in both till fractions warrant further investigation: (1) western Egan Township, overlying the Bradley Lake Syenite; (2) around and south of the Munro and Croesus mines, in Munro and Guibord townships; (3) central Garrison Township overlying the Garrison Stock; (4) south of Ore Car Lake in northern Thackeray Township; and (5) southeastern Harker Township. In these areas, Matheson Till has a local provenance and the bedrock sources for these anomalies are nearby in the up-ice (north­ northwest) direction. Due to the fine-grained nature of gold in bedrock deposits in the BRiM area, the small size of most gold grains recovered from till samples (<50 1-1m) and the variable distribution of gold in the heavy mineral concentrate and fine fractions, the fine fraction in addition to the more commonly used heavy mineral concentrate should be used for gold exploration.Surface till samples have been affected by weathering to a depth of s3 m. Weathered till is characterized by a very low carbonate content in the matrix fraction, the absence of sulfide grains in the heavy mineral concentrate and higher concentrations of copper, nickel and zinc in the fine fraction than in the heavy mineral concentrate. As a result of the weathered/ oxidized nature of the surface till samples, the fine fraction is a better sampling medium for base metal exploration."

Comprehensive field tests were made by the Federal Bureau of Hines at the Conda open pit mine near Soda Springs, Idaho, to determine whether surface geophysical techniques could be used to detect and delineate faults in phosphate deposits. The tests included seismic refraction, magnetometry, electrical resistivity, and airborne photography. Of the several geophysical techniques tested in the field, horizontal resistivity profiling was the most effective method for diagnosing faults. The method is quick, inexpensive, accurate, and can be easily used by mining company personnel to detect and delineate faults.

This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines study of the flow of arsenic-containing materials in the United States, based on the best data available in 1991, includes a consideration of arsenic as a byproduct of the processing of nonferrous metals, the fate of arsenic in manufacturing wastes, the quantity of arsenic used in products, tile fate of arsenic in dissipative uses, and the useful life of discarded products. Where possible, estimates are given of the amounts of arsenic lost from the materials flow. Arsenic byproduct of mining nonferrous metals. Historically, most U.S. production has been from the states of Montana, Washington, and Utah. The smelters in these states are believed to be the areas of the country where arsenic is most concentrated in the soil, tailings ponds, and waste dumps. Since the closure of the last domestic producer of arsenic in 1985, all arsenic has been derived from imported sources. Historically, arsenic was important in agricultural applications as an insecticide, herbicide, and cotton desiccant. As the environmental movement gained momentum and the toxicity of arsenic became better understood, most of the agricultural uses for arsenic were banned. Beginning about 1975, the use of arsenic as a wood preservative began to grow. After 1980, wood preservative uses became more important than agricultural applications. By 1990, 70% of the arsenic consumed in the United States was used by the wood preservative industry and 20% by the agricultural industry. The major source of domestic arsenic emissions in 1989 was from the U.S. copper processing indus¬try. About 7,800 mt/yr of arsenic was discarded in leach dumps, tailings, and slag. Another 800 mt/yr was liberated to the atmosphere and 1/100 mt/yr was exported in copper concentrates. On the consumption side, 9,200 mt/yr was lost, mostly from dissipative agricultural uses and the disposal of obsolete arsenical products.

This paper presents data on the limiting (minimum) oxygen concentration (LOC), in the presence of added N2, of methane (CH4), propane (C3H8), ethylene (C2H4), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrogen (H2), and some of their binary mixtures. It also addresses the issue of the flammable concentration (flammability) limits of these pure gases in air. The study is based on spark ignited explosions in large, spherical laboratory vessels (120-L and 20-L) using a 7% pressure-rise criterion for explosion propagation. The results of the study are compared with the older values which used long flammability tubes with a diameter >5 cm together with visual evidence of substantial upward propagation. They are also compared to results reported recently using a 12-L spherical flask with a visual flame propagation criterion. Finally, they are compared to results reported in Europe using more modest flammability criteria and smaller chambers. The findings reported here show excellent agreement between the 120-L and 12-L results, good agreement with the 20-L results, and reasonable agreement with the earlier flammability tube values for the lower flammability limits. They disagree, however, with the more conservative European values. These results and those from the 12-L experiments also feature lower LOCs than are given by traditional flammability tubes. A model for the LOCs of such fuel mixtures based on the Le Chatelier mixture rule for lower flammable limits is seen to reasonably fit the observed results on binary mixtures and can accommodate more complex mixtures as well. One such set of ternary mixtures containing CH4 and 1:1 CO:H2 is well fitted by the model.

It is well known that the chemical environment determines the success of the flotation process, however its characterization and control is difficult to achieve. This work evaluates the use of various measurements, including mineral potential measurements, in gaining an understanding of the influence of varying parameters such as the milling media and the reagent suite composition on the flotation performance of a platinum group metal (PGM) bearing ore. The results showed differences in the response of the various mineral electrodes to the different conditions, however the changes in flotation performance of the different minerals in the ore could not be wholly described by the electrochemical changes, demonstrating the limitations of these measurements.

"During the past few years emphasis has been placed on the importance of major faults, fault zones, and associated structures in localizing ore deposition. This interest has developed partly through experience in mining camps in other parts of the world, and partly by the discovery of such structures associated with ore deposits in the Abitibi region, northwestern Quebec. The recognition of these structures has been brought about chiefly by detailed mapping that has been gradually extended along most of the southern gold belt of Quebec and across adjacent parts of Ontario. In the Chibougamau region of northern Abitibi, progress has been made in mapping major faults by using aeroplane photographs with a scale of about 1,000 feet to 1 inch for field mapping. These studies have shown that many large faults occur in the Abitibi region; also that there is a relationship, direct or indirect, between faults and mineral deposition. The faults are, however, of more than one type and age, and this should be clearly appreciated in any planned programme for prospecting this great region adequately.Geology of the Abitibi RegionGeneral GeologyFaults of more than one age and type occur in the Abitibi region. In order to appreciate some of the age relationships of the faults, a brief summary of the historical aspects and major structural features of the geology (fig. 1) is necessary. "Innovation in the minerals industry has been lagging behind comparable industries like oil and gas. An incremental innovation culture that tolerates long lead times between invention and adoption has been exacerbated by a research grant structure that inhibits radical idea generation. Entrepreneurs who can make the link between ore source, technology and finance will cause a shift in innovation culture and open up substantial opportunities in the minerals industry of the future. By extrapolating existing trends in technology within and outside mineral processing, a crystal ball vision of future innovation is shaped with the aim to lower energy and water demand, reduce CO2 emissions, decrease operating and capital costs, reduce environmental impact, and secure a social licence to operate. Advances in nanotechnology, advanced materials and biotechnology will impact mineral processing, but the initiative for technology transfer must come from mineral processors. Laminates of graphene oxide can offer efficient filtration and separation media, while microfluidic devices will be used for desalination, solvent extraction and analysis. Substantial progress is expected on benign lixiviants and separation agents, such as nanoscale supramolecular hosts that can serve as high-capacity, selective and recyclable ligands and sorbents, and solid aminobiphosphonate-based adsorbents. Radical ideas for the recovery of precious metals from non-assayable ores and the generation of energy above unity will be adopted in selected minerals projects. In-situ mining in which microbes generate lixiviants at mineral surfaces will simplify processing circuits. Specific ores will be subjected to microwave processing and electropulse liberation to enhance recovery. Ultrafine grinding using devices of low energy consumption will be done mainly dry, followed by dry separation. New flotation cells will remove efficiently either coarse particles or ultra-fine particles, with mineral surfaces being modified not just by new reagents but also by selective microbes. Innovation in mineral processing indeed has a bright future."

At its Copper Cliff Smelter, Vale Inco Limited processes a bulk copper-nickel concentrate in two Inco oxygen flash furnaces. Coke supplies a minor proportion of the process heat requirements, limiting the flash furnace matte grade to the target 45% CuNiCo. Coke addition to the furnace offers a potential means of establishing a reducing barrier on the surface of the molten bath. Such a practice would be conducive to producing sulfur deficient (partially metallized) matte. At the same iron content, the iron activity of sulfur deficient matte is higher than that of regular matte. A supernatant coke barrier could, therefore, be expected to lead to higher nickel and cobalt recoveries, reduction or even elimination of magnetite furnace bottom build-up and increased sulfur elimination as SO2 in the flash furnace. Extensive experiments were conducted in a miniplant flash furnace to investigate the effect on process metallurgy of the suggested modified scheme. The introduction and description of the experimental set up were given in Part 1 of this paper and an early paper published in Yazawa symposium1 together with the results and some in depth discussion on metallurgy. This paper intends to discuss the kinetics of the miniplant flash furnace testwork.
