This work is both a revision and an elaboration of Bureau of Mines Bulletin 371, which was published in 1934 and included data available to October 1933. During the intervening years, a large number of new experimental, high-temperature, heat-content data have become available through continuous, systematic efforts of the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines and the Laboratory for Inorganic and Physical Chemistry of the University of Groningen (Netherlands), coupled with various individual investigations at many institutions. In addition, calculations from spectroscopic and molecular constant data have been extended and applied to a wide variety of gaseous substances. This bulletin purposes to collect and correlate all available high-temperature heat-content and specific-heat data for inorganic sub-stances and to formulate tables and algebraic expressions for their representation. It is hoped in this manner to remove some of the tedium of thermodynamic calculations for industrial metallurgical research workers and engineers who often have available only an inadequate library in this field. It is expected also that this bulletin will have value to those teaching courses in metallurgical and chemical thermodynamics.

The properties of crude petroleum continue to interest the Bureau of Mines and constitute an important phase of its major studies on the mineral resources of the United States. The Bureau's interest in the subject has been intensified by frequent requests for information on the characteristics of crude petroleum from various producing fields. Since its inception the Bureau of Mines has collected and analyzed samples of typical oils and at present has surveyed and classified crude petroleums from nearly all the known oil fields of the Western Hemisphere. Results of these surveys have been presented in various Bureau of Mines publications. (See bibliography, appendix A, p. 145.) The nature and comparative value of crude oils from various countries and the extent to which these oils may be considered potential competitors for markets are of manifest importance to the petroleum industry in all lands, largely because all crude oils, wherever produced, are either actual or potential competitors for a market with all other crude oils. The numerous discussions of foreign production of oil that have appeared in the technical press in the past indicate the great interest of the United States in this subject.

The first bulletin (269) 3 in this series, which appeared in 1932, compiled the entropy values then available for the elements and in-organic compounds, results being listed for some 150 substances. Elaborations and revisions followed in 1936 (272) and 1941 (280), when over 500 usable entropy values were tabulated. The present bulletin constitutes a further elaboration and revision. The accumulation of data since 1940 has been marked, and 800 entropy values now are available. The present bulletin also contains all the pertinent explanatory matter that appeared in its predecessors. Thus, it retains the same dual purpose of assembling the available values of the entropies at 298.16° K. of the elements and inorganic compounds and giving enough explanation of methods of calculating entropies to make the results comprehensible.

Methods for increasing compliance to medical and health regimens were reviewed along with similar research in industrial and mine safety. Principles abstracted from both areas suggest that compliance with health and safety practices is improved when: (1) Workers are cooperatively involved with management in setting safety goals and planning for their achievement, (2) the program has the support of workers, supervisors, and management, (3) specific tasks responsible for injuries are targeted, (4) company organizational policy, educational, and behavioral programs work together toward the same goals, (5) workers and supervisors are frequently informed about their degree of correct task performance, and (6) programs are monitored by the frequency of correct performance of targeted tasks, (the means to lowered accident rates) rather than by lowered accident and injury rates themselves (the goals for safety programs.) Safety programs that incorporate these principles increase persons' adherence to specified health and safety practices and subsequently decrease injury rates. It is recommended that: (1) a group of experts be convened to study the application of these principles to coal mine safety programs, and (2) a short course for safety trainers be developed to demonstrate how these principles can be used to strengthen existing mine safety programs.

The purpose of the study was to 1) examine the social and economic impacts of surface mine blasting in relation to variations in conditions of terrain and geology, population density and type, levels of ground motion and air blast; 2) consider technical, legal and government policy issues; and 3) examine the potential, nature and extent of surface mine blasting impacts and its regulations upon both communities and surface mining companies. Phase One designed the empirical research and technical analyses of Phase Two, focused upon surface coal mining and quarrying in the Eastern U.S. Several broad conclusions are evident: 1) blasting is not the major issue for communities or surface mine companies; 2) while the number of instances of severe cracking or annoyance are relatively small, the impact can be severe for individuals immediately involved; 3) blasting/drilling cost curves tend to rise significantly at intervals below 1.0 particle velocity, in/sec, dependent upon the size of a permit area and the size of a mine; and 4) the legal, complaint, cost and density analyses do not suggest the need for a general lowering of present regulations.

Oil- yield data are presented for 40 sets of core samples and 83 sets of drill cuttings collected in 1952-62 from drilling operations in the Uinta basin of eastern Utah . This accumulated information on the location , extent , and richness of oil shales of the Green River formation is used to appraise the deposits as a source of oil and related products . Core samples used in the study were obtained specifically for evaluating oil shale , and they were satisfactory for this purpose , except they did not completely penetrate the formation . The drill- cutting samples were inferior to the core samples and yielded more erratic results . Consequently, oil yields based on cuttings should be regarded as indicative , rather than definite , until substantiated by other means . In general , the oil- yield data indicate Green River oil shale in Uinta basin is not as thick or as uniform as that in the Piceance Creek basin of western Colorado . However , it is an important potential source of oil . Estimates that beds 15 feet or more thick that average 25 gallons of oil per ton represent at least 120 billion barrels of oil in place are supported by the recent oil- yield data .

The process of converting coal into coke is known as carbonization. Essentially, carbonization is destructive distillation in which the volatile matter of coal is released when coal is heated above its decomposition temperature and passes through a plastic stage before solidifying and forming coke. The mechanics of coke formation are complex, and the specific properties of certain coals that allow them to "cake" or form coke are still unknown. Coke is a hard, cellular, carbonaceous mass, formed by heating coal in the absence of air. It is porous, irregular in size and shape, and is similar in appearance to wood charcoal. Coke, however, is denser, more porous, and more abrasive than charcoal. Coke has been in use for several thousand years. History has recorded its use in Greece before the birth of Christ, and it is thought to have been used in China even before that time. It was not until the l6th century, however, that a method for coking was developed in Europe that subsequent ly evolved into the coking process that is known today. The coke industry in the United States began in the latter half of the 19th century when beehive-coke ovens were built to supply fuel for iron blast furnaces. Before this time, an iron industry fueled principally by charcoal had been in existence for several hundred years. With the depletion of timber resources, coke gradually replaced charcoal as blast-furnace fuel, and by 1875 more iron was made with coke than with any other fuel. Before 1893 a 11 coking was done in beehive ovens. These ovens are refractory kilns with arched roofs, sometimes joined together to form batteries.

COMPOUNDS of rare-earth and iron-group elements are of technical interest because of their unusual magnetic properties. To date, however, all magnetic measurements1-4 have been made with polycrystalline, often polyphase, samples. For the measurement of anisotropic properties, single-crystal samples are necessary to avoid the averaging effect of randomly oriented grains. The purpose of this note is to describe a technique with which we have grown relatively large single crystals of YCo5, NdCo5, DyCo5, and "YFe9". Crystal growth of these materials is complicated because: 1) the binary equilibrium diagrams are, in general, not well-established; 2) in those cases where phase-equilibrium data are available, the compounds of interest are generally formed by peritectic reaction; 3) the molten component metals are chemically very reactive, making contaminaticn of the melts by the crucible material a serious problem. Techniques such as arc or levitation melting followed by strain annealing have been tried5)' in the past with these materials, but with little success because of the peritectic reactions and the inherently poor process control. For this reason we chose to use the zone-melting technique of Mason and cook7 for our work, since past workers8 have had some success in preparing single crystals of peritectic compounds by this method.

ABSTRACT' The first references to gold in New Guinea were by the Portuguese in 1525. The first significant discovery and gold rush was on Sudest Island in 1888 and was a natural extension of the rush that surged up Australia's eastern coast and ended at cook- town. Prospectors made a series of minor discoveries in coastal regions before the first large discovery at Wau/Edie Creek/Bulolo in 1925. Major post war gold discoveries were made at Bougainville, Frieda River, Porgera and Ok Tedi. On Misima Island a large bulk low grade deposit has been recognised surrounding old gold workings. Gold exploration has increased drama- tically since the lifting of a 3 year moritorium on new exploration areas in Noverrber 1982. A new bulk low grade gold discovery has been made on Lihir Island, north of Bougainville and a number of other promising areas are being drilled. Gold production is also expanding dramatically from current levels of 600,000 ounces to an anticipated 1.3 million ounces in 1985 with the opening of Ok Tedi. Other potential developments are likely to increase output above 2 million ounces by 1990. Papua New Guinea's world ranking as a producer is likely to move from 9th to 7th in 1985 reflecting the favourable geological potential, stable political environment and attractive development terms offered by the Government.

The application of high-resolution seismic reflection to map structure and/or mineralisation in hard rock environments has progressed significantly in the last decade. Improvements in equipment, field practice, processing and understanding has seen the seismic reflection technique emerge as a cost-effective tool for high-resolution three-dimensional structural and lithology mapping to depths far greater and with superior accuracy than other more conventional geophysical techniques.This paper outlines results and preliminary interpretation of 2D and 3D seismic reflection surveys aimed at defining fault zones and locations for quartz load development in favourable host lithologies at the Cracow low-sulfidation epithermal gold system in Queensland, Australia.As this is possibly the first time that high-resolution seismic reflection data has been used to define the structurally-controlled location of low-sulfidation epithermal gold mineralisation, an important aspect of this work was the derisking or due diligence steps taken prior to commissioning the full 3D surveys at each site. This included full wave sonic logging, vertical seismic profiling and trial 2D lines. Interpretation of the 2D profiles and the drilling of interpreted structure provided the confidence to proceed with the full 3D survey.The advantage of collecting 3D data extends beyond ensuring that the received reflections are located correctly in 3D space. The final 3D data cube can potentially map the entire fault network, thus highlighting flexures and changes in orientation of the structures both vertically and along strike, which is an important aspect in the deposition of gold and for direct targeting.CITATION:Smith, R, Cook, J, Pike, S and Pridmore, D, 2015. This is one of a series of reports covering the mineral resources of the Nation. It describes briefly most of the known tungsten deposits in Yuma, Maricopa, Pinal, and Graham Counties, Ariz. Most of those described were examined by the author. An effort was made to determine the position of the various deposits by section, township, and range and to give accurate road direction to each property from a prominent landmark. All available maps have been used in making these determinations, but in unsurveyed areas it was necessary to make approximate projections of subdivisions. The township and range numbers refer to the Gila and Salt River base and meridian.

For many years, the combined efforts of machinery manufacturers and mine operators have endeavored to achieve greater productivity from the men involved and the machinery and capital invested, by developing methods to drill blast holes more effectively. Obviously, this means much more than simply developing a drill that will drill a single hole faster. Considerable attention over these years has also been given to methods of carrying and positioning the drilling machine on versatile jumbos, whereby the man's time can he better utilized by the faster drilling machines. Likewise, the art of blasting to utilize the holes that were drilled to achieve the maximum amount of fragmented ore and the methods of moving the broken ore have also progressed. But each phase of the production cycle just described must be made to balance with the other phases of the work. Obviously, major breakthroughs in only one phase don't always generate more "rock in the box" per manshift. Yet, through the persistent effort of the machinery developers and the researchers, the progressive attitudes of mine managers, backed by corporate capital investments, and battle after battle at the operating level, progress is made. Then, if the innovated system is good enough to "stick", in a few years it becomes the system that the newer method must replace, after the same repeated struggle. This is the situation that many mine operators find themselves in today, Looking at their production cycle, which is assumed to be efficient and balanced between drilling, blasting and materials moving capabilities, they tend to guard any visable disruption of the balance of that day's production, and many would prefer to maintain the status quo indefinitely. In the late 19th century, the discovery of rich nickel-copper sulfide ore bodies in Sudbury and the need for tonnage quantities of the metal to be used in nickel steel armor provided the foundation for establishing the Canadian nickel industry. For almost 50 years, International Nickel was the key player. In 1930, Falconbridge Nickel entered the field. These two companies remain the key Canadian nickel producers. This paper discusses the factors that have influenced the evolution of nickel smelting processes. The initial Sudbury ore smelting and nickel copper separation technologies were imported from abroad. It was only in 1937 that International Nickel established a process research laboratory in Copper Cliff The explosive post WW II industrial development created a strong demand for a broader variety of nickel products. For both International Nickel and Falconbridge, R&D became an essential business tool to succeed in the new market scenery. In the last few decades, new technologies were developed and commercialized to respond to the raising cost of energy, society pressing environmental concerns, the advent of nickel laterites as an important source of new metal, the incorporation of new nickel producers to the market, and, therefore, the need to increase productivity. Canada thus became an important exporter of technology. In this paper, the authors review this history with the objective of highlighting the forces that have triggered the most important changes in Canadian nickel smelting.

The real gross national product (GNP) expanded by 2.3% during the second quarter, down from the anomalous 4.4% growth rate in the previous 3 months. If the expansion continues through October, it will have lasted 5 yr and become the second longest in 40 yr.2 As in the first quarter, improvement in U.S. exports played a role in the continuing--albeit slow--growth. More than 2 yr of declines in the dollar relative to currencies of other industrial countries have contributed to a slight reduction in the trade deficit in real (volume) terms, as real net exports of goods and services rose $1.9 billion (table 1). Exports grew a strong 12.1% while imports, which had fallen the previous two quarters, rose 7.4%. Manufactured goods and petroleum products accounted for most of the second quarter import increase. The American Petroleum Institute estimates that the volume of crude oil and refined products imports in the first half of 1987 surpassed those in the same period last year by 7.5%, reflecting falling domestic production and higher than expected demand. Expenditure on durable goods--those that last at least 3 yr-by both consumers and producers also contributed to the second quarter expansion. Personal consumption of durable goods rose 9.0%, after having fallen the two previous quarters. Motor vehicle purchases accounted for most of the second quarter increase and the first quarter decrease. Sales of automobiles surged in the last quarter of 1986, as consumers rushed to capture the sales tax deduction that was eliminated on January 1. Sales fell in the first quarter of 1987, but have now moved closer to the trend line exhibited in the first three quarters of 1986. Automobiles accounted for half the 0.8% July gain in retail sales, and two-thirds of the 1.4% June gain. Producers durable equipment purchases also rose this quarter, accounting for the increase in nonresidential fixed investment.

Several research projects have been conducted in the western United States to determine the optimum soil replacement thickness for reconstruction of rangeland and cropland. However, the information gained from these studies tends to be site-specific and not broadly applicable. Moreover, the possible interaction between soil thickness and mechanical and fertilizer manipulation of the overburden has not been adequately studied. To meet these information needs, research was initiated at Trapper Mine in northwestern Colorado in 1980 to study vegetation response to soil thicknesses of 15,30,45, and 60 cm and five manipulations that included disking, ripping, and fertilizing. All crops were harvested at peak standing crop and then weighed in the laboratory. Wheat grain yields were highest when soil thickness was 45 cm and the soil and overburden were ripped. Alfalfa yields appeared to be highest when overburden was disked and fertilized and soil was replaced to a thickness of 60 cm. For range vegetation, standing crop biomass was highest when overburden was ripped and soil was replaced to 60 cm thick. However, optimum performance was obtained from the maximum number of species and life forms by disking overburden and replacing 15 cm of soil. The performance of most range plant species has improved over the three years of the study. When the results of this study are compared to the results of other soil thickness studies, we can conclude that selection of management practices should be influenced by local climate, local soil and overburden conditions, type of crop or vegetation to be grown, and specific management goals for that crop or vegetation.

Data presented on the physical characteristics of the reservoir oil, Aneth field, represent the initial phase of a study of Paradox basin reservoir oils being made by petroleum engineers of the Federal Bureau of Mines, Petroleum Research Center, Laramie, Wyo. The purpose of the study is to determine the original reservoir-oil characteristics in several important new discoveries in the Paradox Basin and to investigate correlations between the properties of these reservoir oils and structural or areal position within the basin, If migration is limited and oil accumulates near its source, then it seems probable that few differences should be found in the composition and characteristics of reservoir oils occurring in given age rocks and within the confines of a geological basin. Within these limits, conditions that effected the formation of oil and its transfer from parent to storage rocks probably were rather uniform in an area the size of most of our geological basins. However, if oils should migrate considerable distances, it seems logical to expect that the relative quantities of gas and liquid components may differ in traps occurring along the direction of migration, corresponding with the theory of differential entrapment (5).4/

This Bureau of Mines report supplies basic information un areas of occurrence, equipment needed, prospecting, sampling, mining, and regulations concerning the possession and sale of gold. With the surrender of the Japanese Imperial Government as a climax to the capitulation of the German High Command , the main objective of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division pivoted from war assignments to its main normal functions . One of these functions is to give wide public distribution to valuable technical facts which the Division has obtained through research on petroleum , natural gas , helium , and related subjects . During the war years many engineering data and scientific facts could be released only on a restricted basis as reports to war agencies and others immediately concerned . Moreover , many of the wartime reports contained masses of detailed data that were prepared under stress to meet emergency schedules . For peacetime publication and application , these data must be reviewed , correlated , and rearranged so as to present the essentials in proper form . To illustrate , a wartime report of 50 pages might be resolved into one curve in a composite graph for a peacetime publication . Another factor affecting the orientation of the work of the Division is the broader horizon of research revealed by its war activities . Fundamental research and careful engineering analyses are just as important in time of peace as in time of war; in fact , they should be more important to the forward view , because under peace conditions disrupting influences that distract from the orderly acquisition of knowledge are minimized . Therefore , the concerted effort has been not to " salvage " the results of the war activities , but to evaluate them on the basis of their relative importance in the future economy of the country . Where wartime investigations have pointed to peacetime accomplishments , the effort has been to give the corresponding type of work additional emphasis . This adjustment can not be made hurriedly , but many of the necessary preliminary steps on the new course have been taken ..
