THIS REPORT by the Federal Bureau of Mines presents data on water-supply wells used by waterflood operators in North Texas and shows the distribution of permeable source sediments. Averages of well characteristics, including static fluid levels, working fluid levels, net thicknesses, producing rates, and depths, are presented and discussed. Essentially all water used in waterflooding is mineralized water from consolidated sediments. This study is concerned with the geology and distribution of these mineralized source sediments, whereas previous work in this area was predominantly a study of shallow sources of potable water. Tables, isopachous maps, and electric-log cross sections are included to describe the several source aquifers. In general, water-producing capacity increases with depth of the sediments. Wells completed in Cretaceous sediments 82 to 600 feet deep yield 50 to 600 barrels of water daily, whereas those completed in Pennsylvanian sediments 360 to 4,110 feet deep yield 100 to 7,000 barrels daily. Although deeper formations are used where oil and water are produced conjunctively and where large withdrawal rates are required, insufficient well data prevented mapping of deeper formations.

The experimental work described in this report is part of a continuing study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the fundamental physical processes involved in breaking rock with explosives. Six explosives were tested for their strain-producing abilities in a dolomitic marble. The explosives selected for testing had a tenfold variation in detonation pressure and a fivefold variation in characteristic impedance (product of loading density and rate of detonation). Strain pulses produced by the detonation of small charges of the explosives were recorded at distances of 5 to 130 feet. Peak strain, ?, was found to decrease with distance, R, in accordance with an exponential propagation law previously determined for other rock types, namely ? = (K/R)e ?aR The absorption constant, a, did not vary significantly with the explosive and was of the same order of magnitude as that for other rock types. The different explosives produced a fivefold variation in the value of the intercept constant, K.

The Anaconda Company, through its wholly owned subsidiary The Anaconda Company (Canada) I,td., has investigated, optioned and partially developed a large tonnage of iron ore amenable to magnetic concentration. The reserves are located in north central Ontario and occur within a twenty-two mile belt of layered and intricately folded metamorphic rocks, close to the north contact of an igneous complex of granite and pegmatite. There are two main ore deposits. Briarcliffe is a steep to vertically dipping body 100 to 500 feet wide and over a mile long. The Two Mile Lake deposit is flat dipping and confined to an open, asymmetrical syncline; it is approximately a mile wide and 250 to 4.00 feet thick. On its flat easterly plunge, it is saucer-like in shape and is amenable to open-pitting for an east-west distance of several thousand feet. Magnetometer surveys, confirmed by drilling, indicate at least a three mile eastward extension of this deposit. Location and Access: The property is located in the Kowkash Mining District of northwestern Ontario, roughly forty-four miles north of the community of Nakina on the main line of the Canadian National Railroad. (Fig. 1) Access during the exploration period was entirely by airplane from Nakina. (Fig. 2) More recently, Nakina itself was connected to the highway network in the Longlac-Geraldton area. The property is roughly 190 miles by existing and proposed railroad from the Great Lakes waterway system. The Trans-Canada pipeline moving natural gas from western to eastern Canada passes through Geraldton roughly 70 miles south of the property. Topography: The surface features in the area are typical of a sizeable portion of the Precambrian Canadian Shield area. Many lakes, low swampy areas, and glacial moraine-type features are common in this recently glaciated area. The average elevation is between 800 and 900 feet above sea level, and the relief is probably less than 100 feet with the greater portion of the area less than 50 feet. The topographic "highs" are formed either by outcrops that were resistant to glacial erosion or by moraines, eskers and drumlins which were deposited upon the recession of the glaciers. The better mineralized zones, composed chiefly of quartz and magnetite, commonly form ridges resistant to erosion and weathering. Previous Work: Because of the obvious outcrop of the magnetite-rich beds and knowledge gained from early developments within the general region, it is conceivable that the presence of the iron formations has been known for a good many years. Manganiferous carbonate slates of the Cuyuna range, which are part of the unoxidized thin-budded iron formation, represent a large potential source of manganese. This report details recent bench-scale research by the Federal Bureau of Mines in applying mineral-dressing techniques to these materials in order to investigate their potential uses. Work outlined in the report was directed toward the production of concentrates usable as iron-blast furnace feed, but an equally important objective might have been to furnish an enriched feed for extractive processes for recovering manganese. Flotation concentrates were prepared that contained 11.1 percent manganese, 27.8 percent iron, and 12.2 percent silica, with recoveries of 73 percent of the manganese and 48 percent of the iron. Calculated analysis for a simulated sinter suggests a product containing 16.0 percent manganese, 40.2 percent iron, and 17.6 percent silica, with 31 percent recovery of the dry weight of the ore. The silica in the flotation concentrates was due to quartz and iron silicates. Substantial quantities of the iron silicates (stilpnomelane and smaller amounts of minnesotaite) were present in the slate, and the need to reject these minerals limited the recovery of iron. The sintered flotation concentrate would be usable as ferruginous manganese ore for iron blast-furnace feed because of its favorable manganese silica ratio. The unsintered flotation concentrates, representing 45 percent of the feed weight and containing manganese enriched in the ratio of 1.6 : 1, also could be used as feed to processes for extracting manganese.

Cessation of mining on the Bendigo goldfield makes it evident that, as the older generation fades away, knowledge of the famous Bendigo saddle reefs will be limited in the future by their written records. It is important therefore that the summarised account by D. E. Thomas (1953) in the Geology of Australian Ore Deposits should not be misleading. Fig. 6 in this article is stated to portray a cross section and longitudinal section through a series of gold shoots in the Garden Gully 300 ft. reef. The gold shoot along the capof the saddle reef is represented as extending down the east leg in a series of prongs, with the tips of the prongs about 50 ft. apart. It is the purpose of this note to indicate that this illustration can be suspected to be a diagram of the old stopes instead of a diagram of the distribution of gold in the quartz.The original sketches of Figs. 6 and 7 in Thomas' account were extracted, I believe, from the field note books of H. S. Whitelaw, years after his death in the late twenties. Whitelaw was stationed in the Bendigo office of the Geological Survey of Victoria, carrying out geological surveys of the Bendigo mines. He was there for many years before the Gold Research committee started its investigations in 1916 and he was acutely aware of the problem attached to the distribution of gold in the reefs. He had felt concern that manyauriferous reefs were being mined without adequate study and record and he decided, as he expressed it to me, to pick up what he could as he went along. There can be little doubt that the diagrams of Figs. 6 and 7 are products of this resolve.Opportunities to investigate gold occurrences at Bendigo were limited before 1916 because the field was operated by Manuscript received at The Institute 18th November, 1960.

Measured detonation pressures of "prills and oil" (94/6 ammonium nitrate/fuel oil) and three of the new "slurry" blasting agents are presented and compared with computed, ideal detonation pressures and with detonation pressures expected from the measured detonation velocities. Results seem to show that the peak pressure in the detonation wave in these cases is the Chapman-Jouguet pressure and that no "spike" exists in these detonation waves. The absence of the Zeldovich-von Neumann "spike" is noteworthy in view of the very long reaction zone lengths of these mixtures. The measured detonation pressure of one of the slurry blasting agents (DBA-3") under steel confinement ( 172 kilobars) is shown to be considerably greater than the ideal detonation pressure of 75 per cent gelatin dynamite (p. = 135 kilobars) despite the fact that the detonation was still somewhat non-ideal in "DBA-3," its computed ideal detonation pressure being 180 kb. The popular 94/b AN /FO blasting agent exhibited a detonation pressure of only 13.5 kb in 5" paper tubes, but 37.5 kb in 5"• steel pipe compared with a computed ideal pressure of 40 kb.

A new center for mining and metallurgical research is developing at Sterling Forest, N. Y., under the auspices of Union Carbide Corp. Here is to be located the Union Carbide Nuclear and Ore Research Laboratories. In truth, history has repeated itself; the Sterling Forest area in the days of the Revolutionary War, and for many years thereafter, was the mining and metallurgical center of the US. For in these Ramapo hills along the New York-New Jersey border, iron ore was mined, pig lion was cast, and the weapons of war and the plowshares of peace were forged. Before embarking on an historical pilgrimage to yesteryear-a brief description of Sterling Forest. Located in Orange County, N. Y., near Tuxedo, immediately north of the New York-New Jersey State line, and just west of the Erie Railroad and the New York State Thruway, Sterling Forest is approximately 35 mi from New York City. Title was acquired in 1956 from the Harriman family by City Investing Co. Its President, Robert W. Dowling, has established himself as a city planner, having conceived such projects as Pittsburgh's Gateway Center and Philadelphia's Penn Center. A unique, self-contained community -is planned that will contain light industry and centers for research and engineering. Colonies of homes will be interspersed throughout the 20,000 acres of forest land, lakes, and rolling hills. Culture will not be neglected, for Sterling Forest will be the new home for the annual Empire State Music Festival The Sterling Forest Gardens, 125 acres of landscaped woodland and streams, will become the "world's largest permanent floral showplace" The Sterling Forest International Research Building was opened earlier this year, and designed to provide all facilities needed by small growth research companies. The first major company to acquire land to construct research buildings at Sterling Forest is Union Carbide. 1763 ... Discovery of iron ore In turning back the pages of history, a fascinating story can be told of special interest to the metallurgist, the mining engineer, and perhaps even the sociologist. For, where new communities are planned today, older communities had been born, matured, and died. In these hills had lived the. iron miners, the blacksmiths, the lumbermen, the masons, and the teamsters that had given America its start in heavy industry. This was the area where the forests were crisscrossed with many wood roads that brought logs to the charcoal pits, and iron ore to the furnaces. Men make history. Our story brings forth many names of men known as ironmasters, or as industrial leaders-Hasenclever, Faesch, Erskine, Townsend, Ryerson, Parrott, Cooper, Hewitt, Jay Cooke, and Harriman. The name Sterling is derived from a Scotch Lord, the Fifth Earl of Stirling (in its earlier spelling). Lord Stirling was one of seven Englishmen granted a patent of land in the Ramapo hills by Queen Anne in 1707, known as the Cheesecock Patent. He sent an agent, Cornelius Board, to America in 1730, with the express purpose of looking for copper deposits. While he found no copper in his travels up and down the Ramapo Valley, he did find iron ore in two localities: first, in the vicinity of what is now Ringwood, N. J.; second, five miles to the north. There he constructed a forge and furnace at the edge of a lake in 1736, naming the land Stirling Property, after his patron. In 1740, the Ogden family in Newark bought land from Board at Ringwood and began smelting of iron in 1741. The Ringwood story Soon, a genius in the person of Peter Hasenclever appeared on the scene. In a previous article1 the function of various fatty acids as collectors for iron ores was reported for the two alternate processes; (a) the flotation of iron-oxide minerals, and (b) the flotation of calcium-activated siliceous gangue. The selectivity of separation was shown to be markedly dependent not only on such common parameters as pH and the levels of collector and activator addition, but also on the structure and the degree of unsaturation of the acids used. The iron ores employed consisted primarily of hematite, goethite, and quartz and as the effectiveness of any one acid on the separation depends on the individual response of each constituent mineral toward the given collector, a comprehensive knowledge of the floatability of the individual minerals is desirable for the interpretation of the results obtained. The mechanism by which a collector ion becomes attached to a mineral-solution interface has been a subject of much investigation. From quantitative studies of the properties of the electrical double layer on mercury2 and on several solid surfaces3,4,5,6 , the adsorption of some flotation reagents at the mineral-solution interface is beginning to be understood. For example, it has been demonstrated from streaming potential measurements made on quartz5 and corundum6 that the interfacial electrical condition is strongly dependent on the pH. Thisoccurs presumably through the following electrolytic reaction at the interface, and in the presence of a flotation collector, controls the floatability of the solids. A concurrent investigation of the flotation behavior of goethite and of quartz carried out at the School of Mines and Metallurgy7 has shown a positive correlation with the electrokinetic behavior of these minerals. The purpose of the present investigation was to collect general information on the floatability of hematite, and to investigate the function of various 18-carbon aliphatic acids on the floatability of hematite, goethite, and of activated quartz. Electrophoretic mobility measurements, simplified flotation tests using a modified Hallimond tube, and contact angle and frothability measurements were employed. The author discusses the promising future of the use of pipelines for transportation of ore slurries over long distances, citing existing installations. Various criteria and factors affecting the use and size of pipelines are considered. Among the factors influencing the use of pipelines are particle size, specific gravity, abrasiveness, minimum velocities, and pumping considerations. Long-distance transportation of solids by hydraulic pipelines holds the promise of great economic benefits. Today within the confines of most mineral processing plants, the moving of solids about in slurry form by pipeline is commonplace, since the method offers great advantages when conditions are suitable. Yet, this method is surprisingly slow in being adopted on a broad scale for transportation of solids over long distances (arbitrarily the term will be applied to one over five miles long). This is especially surprising in view of the successful realization in this country within the last five years of two daring ventures in long-distance solids pipelines. A 72-mile long, 6-in. diam pipeline of the American Gilsonite Co. has been satisfactorily transporting 700 tpd of gilsonite from the mine at Bonanza, Utah, to the processing plant at Grand Junction, Colo., since April 1957. The 108-mile long 10-in. diam pipeline of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co. has been transporting about 4000 tpd of finely crushed coal from the mine at Cadiz, Ohio, to the Eastlake power plant of the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. on Lake Erie since January 1958. However, besides two projects in the operations of The Anaconda Co. there have been hardly any other significant solids pipeline developments in the minerals industry during the last three years. The two projects are the 14-mile long, 6-in. diam copper concentrate gravity pipeline at Anaconda's El Salvador project in Chile which has been transporting about 800 tpd since January 1959. The second is a 16-in. diam tailings pipeline at the Anaconda Reduction Works, Anaconda, Mont., designed to transport about 20,000 tpd of deslimed flotation tailings for dam building. This pipeline, which is currently undergoing tryout tests and which will be about seven miles in length, will have a maximum of three 20-in. rubber-lined centrifugal pumps in series at the starting point, each developing a maximum of 100 ft of head, to supplement gravity. It is the writer's opinion that the major reason for the hesitation in considering pipeline operations is confusion due to an inadequate understanding of the basic physical principles affecting the slurry flow process by many engineers in the industry. This in turn begets an attitude of fear and trepidation instead of confidence on the part of many management executives, which leads to a minimizing of the advantages and exaggeration of difficulties when considering the possibility of a long-distance solids pipeline. The promotion of better understanding and consequently the promotion of greater confidence in the potentials of long-distance solids pipelines when conditions are suitable is thus the main purpose of this article. To this end, after considering several examples of the possibilities for solids pipelines in the minerals field, the relative significance of the major factors affecting pulp flow, and some major aspects of slurry pumping will be discussed on a general qualitative level. Then a brief outline of the semi-empirical quantitative methods developed to date for estimating slurry flow behavior will be presented. SOME POSSIBILITIES To give an idea of the magnitude of the possible economic benefits, it should be interesting to mention briefly some of the projects currently under consideration and to suggest some likely future possibilities. At Anaconda's El Salvador Project in Chile (Fig. 1) it is eventually planned to extend the existing 14-mile pipeline by another 60 miles to bring the copper concentrates down to the coast of the Pacific Ocean. "The Acheson D-3 Pool was discovered in August 1950, and contains 88 producing oil wells on 40 acre spacing. Initial oil-in-place was 118 million stock tank barrels and initial well potentials averaged 2,000 barrels per day.In early 1956 studies of hydraulic interference between the Acheson and Leduc D-3 Pools were conducted on the Carter Petroleum Reservoir Analyzer. These studies indicated that the natural water drive to Acheson would be incapable of replacing reasonable withdrawal rates over the life of the pool. To avoid shrinkage losses a scheme of pressure maintenance by water• injection was therefore instituted in March 1957.This pressure maintenance scheme is notable because pressure is being effectively maintained by high volume injection through one well located on the flank of the pool. Close control on reservoir behaviour is maintained by regular bottom-hole pres-sure surveys and observation of water cuts on producing wells. No evidence of pressure gradients or channelling of the injected water has been observed to date, and the water-oil contact has remained level over the whole field. It is possible to control the average reservoir pressure within very close limits by varying the rate of fresh water injection.Ultimate recovery estimated from the rise of the oil-water contact and calculated water influx to December 31, 1958, is 335 barrels per acre foot, or a total of 91.4 million barrels from the pool. This compares to 217 barrels Per acre foot or a total of 59.4 million barrels indicated from laboratory test data."

The effect of temperature as a parameter in ore flotation has not been systematically studied, although for some ores it has been known for many years that selectivity and grade of concentrates can be improved by conditioning or flotation at moderately or substantially elevated temperatures. In 1934 Coghill and Clemmer' stated that "elevated temperature seems to make hard water more tolerable" in soap flotation, and a cursory examination of the literature indicates that some earlier investigators were aware of beneficial results obtained by floating above room or mill-water temperatures. Tartaron,2 Mitchell et aL.,3 and particularly Hamilton et al.' have shown that high pulp temperatures give high recovery and selectivity in soap flotation of fluorite from a variety of gangue minerals. As a result of the work of these and of other investigators, high-temperature flotation has been successfully applied to industrial flotation of fluorite. Falconer" stated: "The use of high temperature conditioning (above 35°C and preferably above 60°C) in connection with the soap flotation of nonsulphide ores, as covered in B. Kalinowski's French Patent No. 847,-215, Dec. 7, 1938, is claimed to provide more intense activation, better separation of values from gangue, and reduction in quantity of reagents." The various investigations quoted above clearly demonstrate the improvements to be realized by increasing the temperature at which fluorite is floated, and it is surprising that little or no information has been published on systematic investigation of the same method as applied to other ores. The present article describes comparative results obtained at room temperature and at elevated temperatures by otherwise conventional flotation of iron ores, by single-mineral flotation in the Hallimond tube, and by contact-angle measurements. It is not the purpose of this article to evaluate the commercial feasibility of high-temperature flotation of iron ores, although preliminary calculations show that the cost should not be excessive and that the gains to be realized may well outweigh the extra cost of heating the pulp. LABORATORY FLOTATION TESTS Experimental: All flotation tests reported in this article that use a laboratory Fagergren cell were made on ore A (either containing the primary slimes or deslimed at 20µ as specified) following the preparatory procedures described elsewhere- or this particular ore. Ore A contained hematite, goethite (limonite), quartz, chert, and minor quantities of magnetite. Confirmatory tests made on other ores show that the same general principles apply to ores of similar mineralogy and structure. Conditioning was performed by adding the collector, as a soap, to the vigorously stirred and heated pulp. Conditioning time was 5 min, the pulp contained 60 pct solids, and the equivalent of 0.5 Ib of fatty acid was added per ton of original (unde-slimed) ore. The pH of the pulps ranged from 6.8 to 7.1 (25°C measurement) during conditioning. The pH was adjusted in the flotation cell by addition of either NaOH or H2SO4, the values reported being those of the pulp cooled to 25°C. During conditioning and flotation the pulp temperatures were controlled within l° to 2° by immersion of Variac-controlled Calrod elements in the conditioning beaker and in the cell, and by the use of water, heated to the appropriate temperature, for transferring pulp, adjusting pulp volume, and washing. Selectivity indexes have been calculated on the same basis as those reported in the article by Cooke, Iwasaki, and Choi." Results: Table I gives the results obtained by floating deslimed ore A with pure oleic acid at 25" and 50°C, and Fig. 1 shows the selectivity indexes plotted against pH of flotation. This paper is a case history of an exploration venture for base metals, begun by the Rocky Mountain District of Bear Creek Mining Company in 1952 and completed in 1954. The project was based on the idea of W. S. Burbank, U. S. Geological Survey, that commercial deposits of base metals might occur in Paleozoic sediments beneath hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the Southern Bonanza mining district, Colorado. Here, an area of andesitic rocks, four square miles in extent, has been argillized, pyritized, chloritized and silicified. Geological, geophysical and geochemical studies were followed by the diamond drilling of three holes totalling 6,220 feet. Further alteration ang geochemical studies were made on the cores from these holes. A brief review of the alteration and geologic mapping, colored aerial photograph interpretation, geochemical soil and rock sampling, magnetic, gravity and radio-metric surveys are presented together with some conclusions regarding this work. This paper is a case history of an exploration venture for base metals, begun by the Rocky Mountain District of Bear Creek Mining Company in 1952 and completed in 1954. Important contributions were made to the project by personnel of the Rocky Mountain District and the Geophysics Division. Individual acknowledgements to these people are made at the end of the paper. BASIS FOR THE PROJECT The project was based on the idea of W. S. Burbank (1947, p. 444) that commercial deposits of base metals might occur in Paleozoic sediments beneath hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the Southern Bonanza mining district, Colorado. Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, including the favorable Leadville limestone, are exposed three miles south of the altered area, and reason exists to believe that they might underlie it within a reasonable depth. Alteration of pre-mineral volcanic rocks has been used successfully as a guide to concealed orebodies in the Main Tintic and East Tin tic mining districts, Utah (Bill-ingsley, 1933, p. 120-122; Lovering et al, 1949; Howd, 1957, p. 124-134; Cook, 1957, p. 73) and could be a useful guide here. GENERAL GEOLOGY AND STRUCTURE The Northern and Southern Bonanza mining districts are northwest of the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado, just within the northeastern edge of the San Juan volcanic province. The districts are1ocated on the southern extension of the Sawatch uplift, a prorninent northwest-trending structural high. In continuation of the study of thermodynamic properties of the common interoxidic compounds of ferroalloy elements, this report gives the results of low-termperature heat-capacity measurements and entropy evaluations of the monotungstates of sodium, magnesium, and calcium. Previous reports4 5/ of this laboratory dealt with low-temperature heat capacities, entropies, and heats of formation of the sodium vanadates. Heat-capacity measurements of the monotungstates of sodium, magnesium, and calcium (Na2W04, MgW04, and CaW04) were conducted throughout the temperature range 51° to 298° K. The entropies at 298° K. were evaluated and then combined with entropy data for the elements and oxides to obtain entropies of formation. This information is an essential part of the data needed for thermodynamic appraisals of chemical reactions of these substances. No similar data for any tungstate are to be found in the literature.

This cost bibliography, covering the period from January through December 1960, is a continuation of the series which began with the publication of Information Circular 7516 in October 1949. It is also the second report in the series to be prepared as a cooperative effort by the Bureau of Mines and the American Association of Cost Engineers. The cooperative agreement between the two groups provides for the publication of an annual bibliography with the work load involved in the preparation shared equally. The abstracted articles, concerned with all facets of cost engineering in the field of petroleum and chemical plants and related facilities, came from the following sources: 1. KYANITE and the related minerals sillimanite, andalusite, dumortierite, and topaz are natural aluminum silicates that can be used in production of mullite (3A1203?2Si02), a superduty refractory material. Kyanite and sillimanite are the dominant ones because of their greater abundance. The only other kyanite-group mineral presently used for mullite production is andalusite. Mullite is not an absolutely essential material as other refractories can be used in the same heat range. However, it is a highly satisfactory one. It is the only compound of silica and alumina that is stable at high temperatures. It has low thermal expansion and is very resistant to corrosive melts and to thermal shock. For these reasons mullite refractories have a much longer life than standard fire-clay refractories under the same conditions. Worldwide, excluding U.S.S.R., the refractories industry consumes about 150-000 short tons annually of kyanite group minerals and synthetic mullite.

This paper is one of a series describing the mineral resources of the Nation, including location, history, production, ownership, geologic setting, and mining methods for most of the known manganese deposits in New Mexico, With few exceptions these descriptions are the result of field examinations by the writer. Of 32 counties, the 12 which occupy the western half of the State contain all the known manganese deposits, These counties are Catron, Dona Ana, Grant, Hidalgo, Luna, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, Santa Fe, Sierra, Socorro, San Juan, and Taos. (See fig. 1.)

This publication by the Federal Bureau of Mines contains the free-swelling indexes for 2,812 samples of coal received from January 26, 1948, to July 15, 1957, and the Hardgrove grindability indexes for 2,339 samples of coal received from June 23, 1947, to July 15, 1957. These data consist of the origin of the sample, bed name, and analysis. Summaries show the high, low, and average values for each bed. The free-swelling index is a relative measure of the caking properties of a coal when burned on a grate, and the Hardgrove grindability index is used to estimate the relative ease of grinding coals. Development and standardization of these test procedures were at a much later date than those for the more familiar tests, such as proximate and ultimate analyses and calorific value determinations. The newer tests are valuable in supplying supplemental information, particularly for assisting in evaluating coals used in certain types of combustion processes.4/ Data from such tests are important to designers of burning equipment, operating engineers, and purchasing agents. Data from these newer tests are scarce and scattered through a number of publications. Special projects were started to determine the free-swelling and grindability indexes, in addition to the regular analyses on the tipple samples collected by Bureau engineers. Since the start of these special projects, all the coal fields of commercial importance have been adequately covered in the sampling program.

Although the titaniferous iron occurrences at Iron Mountain have been known since 1850, exploitation of the deposits has been discouraged by the metallurgical difficulties encountered in treating the complex magnetite-ilmenite material. Because of the intimate association of magnetite and ilmenite, the material is not amenable to known ore-dressing practices. During World War II, industries started moving south and west from the industrial East; iron-ore reserves in the East were being depleted at a rapid rate; and titanium came into demand as a pigment. Imports of ilmenite from India, then the main source, were practically suspended because of lack of shipping space. These factors created interest in possible exploitation of the Iron Mountain deposits as a source of iron and titanium.

Following the gold discoveries of the late 1800's much was written regarding the vast mineral resources of Alaska, and much interest was aroused, and yet over the years little has been done to exploit those resources. Between 1906 and 1935 the Kennecott copper mines of the Copper River region were the keystone of the mineral economy (fig, 1). After the depletion of the Kennecott ore reserves and aided by the statutory rise in the price of gold, the yellow metal became the major mineral commodity. In recent years it has shared the honors with coal and sand and gravel. Although this trend should indicate the development of a stable, diversified mineral industry, yet the trend of production is downward. This report results from a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines to delineate the problems and to forecast the growth of the mineral industries in Alaska. The need for such a blueprint for the future was enhanced by the population explosion in the United States and the consequent eventual need for additional living space, as well as the current interest in new areas, and the necessity to develop reserves of strategic minerals.
