"A study carried out on behalf of the National Research Council (NRC) indicates that economic losses due to wear in the Canadian mining industry are in excess of $700 million annually. Severe wear, mainly by abrasion, was identified as the most important wear mechanism in terms of possible savings. One way to reduce losses would be the proper use of databases. A joint project of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CIM) and NRC (Tribology laboratories at IMRI) has been initiated to create a factual database containing all relevant experience in the area of wear in the Canadian mining industry. As a first step, a prototype covering slurry pumps is being built. This should help to answer many questions, such as the number of people involved, interest from industry, cost vs benefits, etc.IntroductionTribology is concerned with the understanding of the mechanisms of friction, wear, and lubrication.Tribology is concerned with the correct use of materials for interacting solid surfaces, with the interaction of those surfaces with lubricants, with the chemistry, physics and use of lubricants and their additives. It is concerned with the reduction of friction and wear (or, in the case of belts, brakes, clutch plates, and similar devices, in achieving optimum friction with minimum wear) and is concerned with the avoidance of associated failures in machinery.Lubrication is usually the solution to a problem of friction and wear. Yet far from all the problems of friction and wear are solved by lubrication. The wear of grinding rods or shovel track pads can hardly be solved by lubrication, to name just two examples with which mining engineers will be familiar. There are indeed many situations of wear and friction where the surfaces in contact are unlubricated.In part, tribology is a matter of design. A major aspect, however, has to do with the choice of materials, to satisfy external constraints upon the component design or choice. The operating conditions for much industrial equipment, particularly in mining are, often very severe. The development of wear resistant materials, including materials which are applied as coatings, is clearly an important technology from the point of view of tribology."

THIS is the story of the recent operations of the Standard Cyaniding Co., which owns the Standard mine, a low-grade gold property in sight of Highway 40 about thirty miles from Lovelock toward Winnemucca, Nev. The ore is mined by power shovel and cyanided after grinding to only 3/S in. A total direct cost of $1.24 was attained in 1941 on 600 tons a day. Mining operations ceased, under Government edict, in 1942, and only in recent months have been resumed. The operating difficulties of today are: (1) the high cost of supplies; (2) labor problems; and (3) Federal laws as interpreted and enforced by executive bureaus of the Government. Of these, the increased cost of supplies is the least important.

Rockbursts are sudden and violent failure of rocks in deep and/or high stress mines, which may destroy the excavation space and cause an accident or even the death of mining workers. This study is motivated by the pervasiveness of rockbursts all round the world. It has been found that rockbursts are often stimulated by dynamic fluctuation which is generated by mining operations or other sources of vibrations, such as blasting in adjacent stopes. This paper attempts to investigate the dynamically stimulating mechanism of pillar rockbursts in hard rock mines from an innovative point of view. Rockbursts are classified into triggered rockbursts and induced rockbursts in accordance with the magnitude of the stimulation force. Triggered rockbursts occur only when a small fraction of stress changes associated with rockbursts is accounted for by the causative excavation, whereas induced rockbursts happen where the causative factor is responsible for most of the stress changes required to produce the rockburst. By considering rockbursts as a dynamic instability problem of structures, rigorous mathematical models are set up for triggered rockbursts and induced rockbursts, respectively. By using the method of averaging and the method of eigenvalue problems, the boundaries of rockburst occurrence of a pillar are obtained for these two rockbursts. A new explanation of the failure mode of fretting or necking of pillars is given, the perturbation effect for pillar rockbursts is found, and the parametric resonance mechanism of pillar rockbursts is revealed. The quantitative relation between blasting parameters and pillar rockbursts obtained can be directly used to control the rockbursts. Contrary to conventional methods where only rock materials or rock specimen were used to study rockbursts, this investigation attaches more attention on the structural effect on rockbursts, which have strong potential applications in deep mining.

Area selection criteria for gold exploration have historically highlighted the low prospectivity of high-metamorphic grade terranes relative to regions with lower metamorphic grades. The Tropicana gold project, Western Australia, is a rare example of a major greenfields gold discovery in Archean mid-amphibolite to granulite-facies gneissic rocks that have experienced widespread recrystallisation and partial melting.The project, located on the tectonically reworked eastern margin of the Yilgarn Craton, is part of the Tropicana Joint Venture, which is 70 per cent owned by AngloGold Ashanti Australia (manager) and 30 per cent by Independence Group NL. Construction of the mine commenced in the June quarter of 2011 and first gold pour from open pit mining is anticipated in the December quarter of 2013. The approved project will have a ten-year mine life and in the first three years of operation, gold production will be between 470 000 - 490 000 oz/a at a cash cost of A$590 - A$630/oz.Reserves as at 31 December 2011 total 56.4 Mt grading 2.16 g/t for 3.91 Moz of gold. The mineral resource, as of 30 December 2012, has grown to 7.89 Moz of contained gold, including Inferred Resources of 11.9 Mt at 2.83 g/t for 1.08 Moz.Economic gold mineralisation post-dates peak metamorphism and is interpreted as younger in age (ca. 2500 Ma) than other gold deposits in the Yilgarn Craton on the basis of structural and geochronological constraints. Mineralisation is genetically related to an imbricate thrust stack that records a prolonged history of reactivation during the Proterozoic era. Gold mineralisation formed from higher temperature (>350¦C) silica-undersaturated fluids that preferentially migrated though a favourable intensely potassium metasomatised zone. Permeability created during brittle fragmentation was accompanied by replacement of mafic metamorphic minerals, and synchronous partitioning of strain into pervasively biotite-sericite-pyrite-altered stylolites and shear planes that bound more competent lithons.CITATION:Doyle, M, Savage, J, Blenkinsop, T G, Crawford, A and McNaughton, N, 2013. "A general review of the wear problems encountered in the mining industry is presented and current practice for wear protection systems is reviewed.A new concept in wear protection is described and compared to alternative systems. Utilization of conventional stud welding technology and abrasion-resistant wear studs is shown to be a useful supplement or substitution for conventional techniques. Operating life of many consumable components can be increased by up to four fold. The technique is highly portable for on-site field application or can be used in shop environments.Details of the wear protection model and metallurgical properties of the wear component are also reviewed. Laboratory wear test data are reported to supplement field test performance or to screen potential alloy compositions for application in specific environments.A Review of Wear Problems and Wear ProtectionThe emphasis on wear protection has increased in recent years because of the increasing impact of the potential savings in time, materials and energy. A 1974 German study concluded that attention to tribology, the study of friction and wear, could save approximately $3 billion, and a study in the U.S.A. at the same time put the figure at $100 billion of which $20 billion was for materials. A more recent American study put the energy component of the potential savings at $16.2 billion per year. A recent British study estimated the total potential savings in the U.K. as $1 billion per year, with the largest savings coming from lower maintenance and replacement costs ($500 million), lower breakdown costs ($250 million) and increased machinery life ($200 million). These three major contributions are all potentially accessible in the mining industry."

THE Seventh International Petroleum Exposition and Congress to be held in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 4 to 11, inclusive, in true western spirit promises to be bigger and better than ever. The Exposition has become an established institution. It gives opportunity to petroleum engineers, technologists, and operators to see each year at one place what the tool makers and machinery manufacturers have to offer which is new or better. It has truly become a place "where men, methods and machinery meet." It is also a convenient focus for technical meetings of various kinds devoted to petroleum and natural gas problems. 'The Petroleum Division of the A. I. M. E. has for several years held its chief fall meeting at Tulsa just preceding the opening of the Es- position. This year our meeting will be on Oct. 2 and 3 and it will be held as usual at Hotel Mayo. The Mid- Continent Oil and Gas Association will, as usual, hold a meeting during the Exposition and this year the Petroleum Division of the A. S. M. E. will hold a three- day session, Oct. 6-8, in the auditorium on the Esposition grounds. In all, six technical sessions are planned by this Society, and aside from reports of committees some 20 technical papers are to be presented. Members of the Institute should attend its own meeting and stay over for as many days as possible for the other meeting at which they will hear and see much of helpful interest.

THE ninth International Petroleum Exposition held at Tulsa, May 16-23, broke all size, sales, and attendance records of previous shows. More than $12,500,000 worth of equipment was on the grounds. There were 546 companies exhibiting and every available inch of the fifteen acres allotted to exhibit was taken. Drake Drive, the main street of the exposition, was literally "supply row" with National Supply, Frick-Reid, Continental Supply, Oil Well, Bridgeport, International Derrick and Equipment, and Parkersburg Rig and Reel companies occupying the entire space. The exhibitors were a cross section of American industry, with such firms, besides the strictly oil equipment firms, as the United States Steel Corp. and others allied to the oil industry, exhibiting. Between $10,000,000 and $15,000,000 of equipment is estimated to have been sold on the grounds during the exposition. Valuable contacts were made by the exhibitors with key oil men. Attendance passed the 175,000 mark for paid admissions in contrast with 154,000 for the eighth exposition in 1934. Visitors registered from Venezuela, Soviet Russia, India, Germany, Spain, Mexico, England, Canada, France, Colombia, Greece, West Indies, and Rumania. Hotels were overflowed and a housing bureau found rooms in private homes for thousands. Oil companies set up a schedule of shifts in order that as many of their field men might attend as possible. The U.S. Bureau of nines evaluated the potential availability of tungsten from 57 tungsten mines and deposits in 19 market economy countries (1). The 38 properties that were producing at the time this study was performed contain approximately 375,000 tons1 of W03 (tungsten trioxide). The total estimated recoverable resource from all properties studied, both producers and nonproducers, was 1.2 million tons W03 (demonstrated level). Approximately 143,000 tons of W03 is recoverable from producing properties with costs at or below the January 1983 market prices. The study indicates that by 1990 production from currently operating mines in market economy countries will decrease as their demonstrated resources become exhausted. Some of this potential decline may be offset by lower than anticipated levels of market demand, discoveries of additional resources at producing mines, development of other known deposits, and/or discoveries of new deposits. Development of new tungsten resources in market economy countries will likely result in costs higher than exist at currently producing properties. The People's Republic of China has been steadily increasing production and export of tungsten in various form and currently supplies about 25 pct of U.S. imports. China's tungsten mines are large, high-grade operations capable of producing at relatively low cost. These factors, coupled with China's apparent need for foreign exchange, could lead to further expansions of production and exports from China, with a consequent increased dependence by market economy countries on China for tungsten requirements and a threat to the survival of the market economy countries' tungsten industries.

"GENERAL BACKGROUND/CONTEXT The £300 million Bond Street Station Upgrade project will provide essential congestion relief and step-free access to an important interchange and destination station in the heart of the London Underground network. In 2010 London Underground (LU) let a design & build contract to Costain Laing O’Rourke (CoLOR), with the works to be completed in early 2017. CoLOR’s lead designer is Halcrow-Atkins JV (HAT). The station upgrade works comprise the following principal elements: •,A new satellite ticket hall on the North side of Oxford Street •,Two additional escalators and stairs providing congestion relief to the Jubilee line platforms •,Four lift shafts to provide step-free access between the different levels of the station •,Additional stairs to Central line platform level •,Tunnelled connection to the Crossrail station immediately to the south •,Connecting passageways, including ten connections to existing station tunnels. To achieve this, an existing property at 354-358 Oxford Street has been purchased and demolished, and the basement deepened to make provision for the new ticket hall. From this basement two circular shafts have been sunk, providing construction access for the tunnelled passages and lift and escalator shafts. The tunneling is principally in the London Clay stratum, which is widely recognized as a favorable tunneling medium, although the deepest parts of the works extend into the Lambeth Group strata which consist principally of stiff clays at this level but also contain water-bearing sands. The majority of tunneling has been carried out using mechanical excavation and sprayed concrete linings but other techniques have been used in areas where SCL is not practicable.A key challenge for design and construction of the works has been spatial constraint, in particular due to: •,The existing underground station layout •,The Limits of Deviation for the works •,The small construction site at 354-358 Oxford Street •,Overlaying Third Party assets including Listed buildings, sewers and water mains."

Surface and underground mining operations require equipment with high power output ratings. Haul trucks, loaders, dozers, and other equipment need increasing horse-power to meet production demands. To get more horsepower out of the engines driving the equipment, most manufacturers use turbocharging. Detroit Diesel puts the number at about 90% turbocharged, while Caterpillar estimates 75% to 80% of all its equipment is turbocharged. Turbocharging increases the power output and overall engine efficiency. But it presents some maintenance and operational problems that were not factors when only naturally aspirated engines (nonturbocharged) dominated the scene. A turbocharger is an exhaust-driven air compressor. Using the waste energy in the engine exhaust, a turbine wheel is driven. This wheel is connected by a common shaft to a compressor wheel. The shaft is supported by two plain bearings, or bushings. As the turbine wheel is rotated, the compressor wheel continually compresses the intake air to the cylinders. Compressing the intake air means that more air can be put into the cylinder to burn more fuel. The more fuel the engine can completely burn or combust, the more horsepower the engine can produce. Even though the turbocharger is a relatively simple device, it is a sensitive engine component. It requires special consideration at engine start-up and shutdown. Being freewheeling and exhaust driven, turbochargers can experience temperatures of 540°C 1000°F) and rotational speeds of more than 100,000 rpm. Due to those temperatures and speeds, lubrication is critical to the operation and life of a turbocharger. The turbo is located high on the engine, with the oil supply running through an external line from the sump. The recommended practice is to start the engine and allow it to idle for a few minutes before any revving or loading. This allows the oil to reach the turbo and properly lubricate the bearings before high rotational speeds are seen. Turbo oil supply lines can be as long as 1.5 m (5 ft). Depending on ambient temperatures and oil viscosity, it can take as long as 30 seconds for oil to reach the spinning turbo. However, as little as five seconds without oil can damage the turbo's bearings, reducing its life and overall efficiency. Lubrication problems seen at shut-down can also significantly affect turbo life and efficiency. Manufacturers recommend an idling period of five to seven minutes before engine shutdown. This allows the turbo to slow down and cool off somewhat to help prevent oil coking and bearing damage. When the engine stops, so does the oil supply. There is very little oil left on the bearing surfaces and in the turbo oil supply passages. The immediate heat transfer from the turbine wheel to shaft, bearings, and turbo body literally cooks what is left. This high heat without oil flow can cause bearing deformation by actually melting some of the bearing material. The rapid oil oxidation and coking will restrict oil passages, damage bearings and shaft. Besides heat soaking, there is another problem. If the turbo is spinning at high speeds when the engine is shutdown, the turbo must spin-down to a stop without oil flow. With the large size of turbos used on mining equipment, this spindown time without oil can be for as long as 10 to 20 seconds. Fortunately, lack of lubrication at start-up and shutdown and the subsequent bearing damage can be prevented by oil injection devices. These devices hold a reservoir of engine oil. The oil is injected to the turbocharger bearings immediately on start-up and for several minutes after shutdown. Oil injection devices are spring loaded, hydraulic accumulators. They are actuated at start-up by a solenoid wired to the starter motor. Engine oil pressure charges the accumulator during normal operation. Upon shut-down and loss of oil pressure, the device provides oil to the turbo for about two or three minutes. With an oil injection device, the engine can be started and immediately driven without fear of turbo damage. Also, an abrupt shutdown will not damage the turbocharger since the device will continue to lubricate for two or three minutes. A word of caution. Be sure the oil injection device provides positive oil displacement (pressurized oil flow). Do not use a gravity-flow device. Unless it is a true accumulator, the device could starve the turbo for oil on start-up, Ask for start-up and shut-down pressures and delivery times before considering installation. Keep the oil clean, and follow the manufacturer's recommended oil change intervals. These intervals are usually shorter than with naturally aspirated engines. Use oil with a CD rating designed for diesel applications. A multiviscosity oil is preferable. Use a synthetic engine oil, such as Mobil's Delvac 1, Gulf's Super Duty II, or Chevron's Sub-zero Fluid. Synthetics have much better flow properties at low temperatures. They also have greater oxidation stability (they can take the high heat of turbo-bearing lubrication. And they produce fewer deposits because they are more thermally stable. But synthetic oils do cost more - two or three times more. One additional point - maintain the air intake system. Since all mining is usually in a dusty environment, air filters should be changed regularly and intake systems should be checked for leaks. All intake air passes through the turbo. Any dirt or abrasives entering the turbo will damage the unit and shorten its life. While mining is a heavy duty business with severe operating conditions, you can get the life from your turbocharger that you expect by following a few simple steps: • equip the turbo with an oil-injection device to provide lubrication on start-up and shutdown; • change the oil and filters regularly; and • use the proper oil-synthetic, if possible.

The sixth international symposium on mining with fill nearly coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Jubilee Symposium on Mine Filling. That symposium, held in August 1973 in Mount Isa, in part to commemorate the 80th anniversary of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was the first in what has turned out to be a very successful series of symposia. Subsequent symposia were held in Sudbury, Canada (1978), Lulea, Sweden (1983), Montreal, Canada (1989) and Johannesburg, South Africa (1993). The series of symposia has now become an established part of the mining industry calendar, and it will be interesting to see which country is given the honour, and accepts the challenge, to organise the next symposium.One way of predicting the future, or some small part of it, is to revisit where we have already been with a view to determining the existence of any trends that may impact on the future. An historical review of filling practice and research, with special emphasis on Australian experience in particular and worldwide in general over the previous 25 years, will enable me to address the historical and predictive objectives. Controversy can always be achieved by producing a best of list; it can be guaranteed that everyone will disagree with at least one of the nominations. On this occasion, the best contributions by individuals or groups in a number of areas of mine fill technology, over the last 25 years, will be the basis for the nominal awards. The controversy can be increased by posing a number of questions that, hopefully, some of the authors will address during their presentations. I imagine the social functions will be busy enough, but the questions may just add to the cut and thrust of the debate.

When the chairman of the conference organising committee invited (or was it instructed?) me to prepare and deliver one of the keynote addresses, his request was for me to be in parts historical, controversial, predictive and entertaining. The mix was left to me, with one proviso - that an early pioneer of mine filling in Australia be given due recognition. The chairman of the organising committee alone will be able to determine if I fulfilled the last objective. My success, or otherwise, with the other objectives will have to be judged by my fellow delegates. One way of predicting the future, or some small part of it, is to revisit where we have already been with a view to determining the existence of any trends that may impact on the future. An historical review of filling practice and research, with special emphasis on Australian experience in particular and worldwide in general over the previous 25 years, will enable me to address the historical and predictive objectives.

The Lepanto and Victoria epithermal deposits contain in excess of 8 Moz Au, associated with massive enargite-cemented breccia and quartz-carbonate-base metal veins, respectively. The two deposits are separated by 500 m, but the latter was not discovered until the former was nearly mined out. The sulfid assemblages of these adjacent deposits are characterized by high- and intermediate-sulfidation states, respectively. However, gold was introduced after enargite at Lepanto, associated with an assemblage that is similar to that of the Victoria ore. An even larger gold resource is present in similar to that of the Victoria ore. An even larger gold resource is present in the Far Southeast porphyry Cu-Au deposit, the top of which lies 200-400 m beneath and adjacent to these two epithermal deposits.

In sulfide mineral flotation, the efficiency of separation is severely affected by the presence of non-sulfide gangue minerals, such as altered silicates and serpentines. Although this is an acknowledged fact, most studies in mineral processing have focused on value minerals, and studies on gangue minerals affecting flotation performance are quite rare, and even those that do are limited in scope. This paper is an attempt to highlight the use of grade-recovery curves in studying the effects of gangue minerals. Specifically, we present the flotation response of problematic Ni and Cu ores which show highly uncharacteristic but similar grade-recovery characteristics despite the very different mineralogy and try to understand this behavior and the underlying mechanism. Finally, we propose chemical modifiers as solutions to overcome the detrimental effects of these gangue minerals and improve efficiency of flotation performance. Impulse Atomization (IA) (a single fluid atomization technique) was used to rapidly solidify Al- 4.5wt%Cu and Al-4.5wt%Cu-0.4wt%Sc under argon atmosphere. In addition to the IA-generated droplets, the same technique was used to produce strips by Spray Deposition (SD) of the same alloys on a copper substrate with and without oil coating. The rapid solidification microstructures were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). From the SEM images, the amount of eutectic and the secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) were measured. These SDAS results lead to the estimation of cooling rate. The eutectic fraction coupled with the metastable extension of the solidus and liquidus lines of Al-Cu (Sc) phase diagram lead to the estimation of primary and eutectic undercoolings. A comparison of the solidification path of the droplets and the strips was done as well as the analysis of the effects of scandium.

The People's Republic of China has abundant coal resources with proven reserves amounting to 582 Gt (641 billion st). Recognizing coal as a major energy source on which to build the country's industrial and economic base, there has been a rapid increase in production since the founding of the People's Republic. In 1949, only 29.4 Mt (32.4 million st) of coal was mined. Production has increased to 576.5 Mt (635.5 million st), exclusive of Taiwan, at present, making China the third largest coal producing country in the world. Plans call for a 4-5% increase in annual production for the next 20 years. Coal constitutes 70% of the primary energy consumption in China. The remaining 30% is divided between petroleum and natural gas with 26% and hydropower with 4%. Coal use and consumption is divided as follows. General industrial use comprised 48.9%, power generation uses 20.1%, and coking accounts for 10.5% (6.3% for metallurgy and 4.2% for chemical industry). Domestic use such as home heating and cooking makes up 17.8% and coal-fired steam engines for railways uses 4.7%. Coal Districts Coal underlies about 1/18 of China's land area. It occurs in 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. In addition, the western interior region, which has not been explored, may contain sizable reserves. Based on geology, geography, and administration, the coal fields can be grouped into five districts as shown in Fig. 1. The north China district, the heart of the industrial base for the country, has the most extensive and largest deposits of the five districts. This amounts to almost 40% of the country's total reserves. The largest coal basin with proven reserves of 181.4 Gt (200 billion st) and the most exploitable seams is located some 300 km (186 miles) southwest of Beijing (Peking) in Shanxi Province. Centered around Taiyuan, the compound field extends from Datong in the north to Xian in the south. Its western extension is not known fully. The Northwest and Northeast districts contain the second and third largest deposits. The biggest coal field in South China is located in the Sichuan and Guizhou Provinces near Chongqing. At present, it is not known if sizable coal measures exist in the Tibetan district. Coal Types China's coal varies widely both in age and rank. Geologically, coal measures were deposited from the lower Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian of the US) and Permian of late Paleozoic, mainly during the Jurassic of the Mesozoic and peri¬odically throughout the Cenozoic. The People's Republic of China has 582 Gt (641 billion tons) of proven coal reserves. At present, 576.5 Mt (635.5 million tons) of coal are mined a year which makes China the third largest producer of coal in the world. Underground mining accounts for 95% of the total production. This paper will discuss the coal districts, coal types, jurisdiction of coal mining, and methods of underground mining. The article also will outline China's objectives in future planning and development of its coal reserves.

AN accelerated trend toward mechanical mining was noted in 1940, calling for improvements in and better performance of transportation, hoisting, and ventilating equipment. One of the most interesting experi¬ments in transportation is the track shuttle-car operation first put into use by the Princeton Mining Co. in Indiana and later at the Montour 4 mine of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. This system is based on the use of 10-ton drop-bottom mine cars operating on track and han¬dled by an ordinary gathering loco¬motive. These mine cars are loaded and taken in trips of two to a central dumping station which serves four or less loading machines. The dumping station consists of two standard chain-and-flight room conveyors, approximately 50 ft. long placed side by side approximately 4 ft. below the track from which the drop-bottom cars are dumped. These conveyors are operated at low speed and discharge into two similar elevating conveyors which operate at a higher speed and convey the coal to a trip of standard mine cars. A dumping station is usually located so that approximately 500,000 tons of coal may be handled through it before a move is required. This plan appears to have considerable possibilities for the mine equipped with small mine cars and standard locomotives since the advantages of large mine cars can be secured at a fraction of the cost required to install such cars throughout the mine. It appears logical that the future will see a much wider use of this modification in transportation.
