Very little information is available concerning the magnetic properties of minerals and only recently has there been any attempt to correlate magnetic susceptibility with varying chemical composition1. The work described here covers a study of the relationship and chemical composition of both the rutile and sphene types of titanium minerals. The relationship between the magnetic susceptibility of three selected mineral specimens and the applied field strength is also presented. Experimental: The equipment and procedures used in this in- vestigation for crushing and cleaning the mineral specimens and for determining the magnetic susceptibilities were the same as that employed by Spokes and Mitchell1. The particle size of-the measured specimens was limited to 270/325 mesh.

A crucial concern when implementing computer algorithms for geostatistical analyses on microcomputers is speed of execution. Kriging, in particular, typically relies on a Gauss elimination algorithm to solve for weights. Because such an algorithm is required for each estimate, the solution for weights can result in very slow program execution speed on a microcomputer. One approach to enhancing the efficiency of Gauss elimination is demonstrated herein. The upper triangle plus diagonal of the intersample covariance matrix is used in a modified banded Gauss elimination algorithm. Results show that such an algorithm yields approximately a two-fold reduction in execution time for kriging when the number of nearest neighbors used for estimation is large.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) imposed a no-blasting specification (blasting is restricted to the construction shaft and shaft bottom or boot) on the Deep Tunnel project in 1988. This was prompted by numerous complaints from the residents in the vicinity of the project, and controversies experienced on previous projects from blasting the rock overlying the tunnel. This paper will describe the methods utilized by two major contractors who are driving 20 km (12.5 of tunnel along with drilling over 36 shafts under this restrictive specification. The impacts on design, construction, schedule, cost, and the environment are detailed.

New Mexico lies at the eastern edge of one of the world’s great metal-bearing provinces hosting numerous Laramide and Paleogene mineral deposits. Southwestern New Mexico contains Laramide porphyry Cu (±Mo, Au) and Paleogene Mo-W deposits. Porphyry deposits are generally large, low-grade deposits containing Cu, Fe, Mo, Au sulfides (and other metal sulfides) associated with porphyritic intrusions and exhibit characteristic alteration styles. Porphyry deposits can also be spatially and temporally associated with skarn deposits and polymetallic veins. All of these deposits have the potential to host various critical minerals, including Cu, Zn, Bi, Co, Ni, rare earth elements (REE), Te, and W. Critical minerals may be found as substitutions within ore minerals or as separate mineral phases. These deposits are constrained using 40Ar/39Ar dating into three ore-producing magmatic pulses: 1) ~78–71 Ma Laramide pulse, 2) ~59–50 Ma, Laramide pulse, and 3) ~40–30 Ma Paleogene pulse. New and historic whole-rock geochemical data have highlighted areas with critical minerals potential that require further study.

In block caving, the rates and sequencing of undercut production blasting, drawbell blasting, and mucking are the key levers for attempting to manage cave performance. Cave performance encompasses a range of factors, which include growth, shape and the effect of the cave on the abutments, excavations, geological structures and lithology. We compare production data in several panels in the Grasberg DMLZ and GBC block caves with the seismic response in work areas, around geological structures, and in geotechnical domains. These comparisons enable evidence-based conceptualising of the effect of production rates and mining layouts. By also considering the correlation of seismic release rates in different parts of the rock mass, the wider influence of a cave can be gauged through considering possible stress and / or deformation transfer. This concept is not novel, but it is rarely implemented in a routine fashion, principally because production data rarely are easily available. Previously, it has also been used to retrospectively compare seismic hazard between different mines. This paper discusses practical, day-to-day tools to manage seismic response to mining. Therefore, the paper presents a methodology for presenting seismic release and production rates on integrated plots at any time to facilitate quick identification of correlated spatial regions. This methodology explores the production data collection and geolocation at Grasberg, which will be described in some detail.

"The design of the tunnels at Bond Street Station includes a final sprayed concrete fireproofing layer. The performance of this layer was verified by a program of testing to Crossrail’s KT24 specification, which proved that a dosage of 1kg/m³ polypropylene fibers and a layer thickness of 50mm would be sufficient to limit spalling in the event of a fire. Application of this thin layer was achieved using a state of the art spraying robot, with the ability to scan the profile and automatically apply a uniform layer of concrete. To provide assurance and calibrate this spraying robot, BFK developed a bespoke survey system for checking SCL thicknesses in the field. This provided an instant independent check of the spraying robot and allowed areas of inadequate thickness to be rectified without risk of cold joints. This paper describes the practical application of the fireproofing layer and how design compliance was ensured. INTRODUCTION Fire is one of the most serious risks to a tunnel. The nature of tunnels — being long enclosed spaces — can increase the intensity of a fire, and make fire-fighting and rescue operations difficult. The damage that can be caused has been demonstrated by a number of historic tunnel fires, such as the Channel Tunnel fires of 1996 and 2008, and the Mont Blanc Tunnel fire in 1999. Without any intervention, the high temperatures in a fire create thermal stresses and a build-up of vapor pressure within the pores of concrete, which eventually exceed the tensile strength and trigger explosive spalling. Spalling exposes the core of the section to severe temperatures, leading to a loss of concrete and steel reinforcement strength or further spalling of successive layers. The concrete used in tunnel linings is particularly susceptible to explosive spalling, due to its low permeability achieved by the addition of microsilica (Bailey 2011). The sprayed concrete lined (SCL) tunnels on Crossrail have been designed to resist the worst anticipated fire in operation, in order to prevent collapse and minimize damage to the structure. The design called for a system of passive fire protection, the efficacy of which was validated by the contractor through a testing regime. It was critical that the application on site reflected the test conditions, which demanded special control of the profile and thickness of the lining. In order to meet these constraints on tolerances and quality, BAM Ferrovial Kier joint venture (BFK) developed a reliable method of working with the Meyco Logica spraying robot, and a bespoke survey system for accurately checking thicknesses in the field. These innovations are the focus of this paper."

Surface and underground mining operations are often hindered by unknown tunnels and stopes and the precise locations of adjacent workings. Mine safety and planning are adversely affected especially in previously undermined areas where historical records are incomplete or non-existent. The results of several Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) studies for the detection of known mine tunnels in underground coal; salt, and gold mines are presented. A case study to locate unknown, abandoned mine workings at a surface gold mine successfully located all workings to a depth of 11 meters.

Discontinuities are geologic occurrences in rock and when present within a pillar, reduce the strength of the pillar. Empirical formulas that are commonly used to determine pillar strength do not explicitly take into account the presence of discontinuities and thus can overestimate the pillar strength. The effect of discontinuities on the strength of pillars has been investigated using numerical models, but in these models, the discontinuity strike was parallel with the pillar faces. In this study, fully three-dimensional hard rock pillars were simulated using numerical modeling to understand the effect of the discontinuity dip direction on square and rectangular hard rock pillars. Based on the results, recommendations to assess a pillar’s strength in the presence of a discontinuity are discussed.

The analysis of the phenomena involved in the determination of the compressive strength of iron-ore agglomerates leads to the identification of the important parameters. It is shown mathematically that the pellet rupture strength is proportional to the cross-sectional area. Fracture is initiated at the center of the pellets by the tensile stresses developed by the compressive loads normally to the compression axis. The variation in strength between individual pellets of identical composition and subjected to identical treatments is due to internal voids of varying sizes, that act as stress-concentration sites. Two novel testing procedures are proposed. The first consists of testing the pellets between two plates having three steel spheres each. This configuration simulates much better the environment actually encountered by the pellets. The second procedure consists of a thick-walled cylinder in which a piston penetrates; a large group of pellets is tested simultaneously, as the stress versus strain plot is being recorded. This latter test presents significant advantages over the conventional testing procedure; the main one is that one single test is sufficient to characterize the mechanical response of the pellets.

Commonly used predictors of ground vibration from blasting, being linear in log-log plot, do not model the underlying physics of wave attenuation. Amplitude of the wave decays with distance due to geometrical spreading and inelastic attenuation producing a nonlinear carve in log-log scale. The nolinear decay of seismic waves has also been observed from non-explosive sources, such as, pile driving, drop hammer, traffic, etc. The improved predictors, by explicitly taking these two mechanisms into consideration, model the data trend extremely well at all distance ranges. Actual field data from different studies have been used to validate the improved models.

All life on Earth relies on the ocean and yet the ocean is 95 percent unexplored, unknown and unseen by human eyes,? said Paula Keener, director of education programs for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration?s (NOAA) Office of Ocean Exploration and Research. ?To better understand, manage and protect the ocean and its resources, NOAA believes it is critical to use the best technology to explore, discover, inform, educate and motivate? (MTS, newsletter, January 2011). In the last few decades, our understanding of the global mineral resource base has been drastically changed by some surprising new developments. The potential for commercial minerals per unit area in the oceans and seabed appears to be similar to that of the terrestrial lands. Thus, almost three-fourths of the global mineral resources are in, or under, the sea and are virtually undeveloped. The area of the Pacific seabeds alone is greater than the total area of the global lands. Half of the global seabed minerals are now controlled by nation states within their Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ). The other half is controlled by the United Nations (UN) through the International Seabed Authority (ISA) within the ?areas beyond national jurisdiction? known as The Area. Thus, the Law of the Sea, ratified in 1994, has resulted in the largest transfer of control of natural resources in the history of mankind. This paper was prepared by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) Committee on the Offshore Technology Conference for the SME Board of Directors and other interested parties. As the premier professional society for the mining and mineral community in the United States, with a history dating back to the 19th century, SME?s mission is to encourage and support young men and women engineers in the minerals industry, provide the services they need, improve the image of the industry, strengthen the networking among global industry professionals and engage in proactive collaboration among industry, government, academia and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). The accomplishment of this mission can be strongly advanced by highlighting what is probably now the most significant development in the history of the modern minerals industry - the exploration of the marine environment and the understanding of the potential for the development of the minerals therein.

The scrutiny given to model predictions of pit-lake water quality has focused attention on the uncertainty associated with long-term predictions. Although comparison of probabilistic predictive modeling of water quality in existing pit lakes indicates that short-term predictions can bracket most parameters, uncertainties in wall-rock reactions and the stability of groundwater composition and climate remain unquantified. This overview of the uncertainties associated with longer-term predictions is presented as support for those considering policy decisions that must be made in the absence of reliable estimates of future conditions.

A common assumption in determining the shear strength of a rock joint using a direct shear test is that the surfaces undergoing relative shear are in complete contact. Furthermore, the limiting displacement associated with the residual strength values is obtained based on engineering judgement through visual inspection of shear force versus displacement curves. This study proposes a systematic way of determining the residual shear strength of rock joints by evaluating the limiting displacement leading to a minimum cohesive strength value and taking the true area of contact into account. The results of the study indicate that there is a limiting displacement associated with the residual shear strength, and some rocks may have an inherent interface residual cohesive strength different from zero. When the cohesion is different from zero, the residual shear strength is likely to be underestimated if the true area of contact is not considered. In the case where zero calculated cohesion is obtained, the area of contact has no bearing on the shear strength equation because the frictional force depends only on the normal load.

Operational excellence is generally known as a management system integrated across critical functions that is geared towards continually improving operational performance. Functional areas such as health, environment and safety, quality and human resources are the focus of many corporate-wide operational excellence programs. Operational excellence also focuses on improving areas such as customer orientation, employee empowerment as well as process, and systems optimization. It is widely viewed as critical to sustaining business performance improvement. Although it is difficult to find a universally accepted definition, or even common foundation in many respects, operational excellence remains a popular term in the business world. Many organizations have developed their own version of organization excellence, influenced by such individual factors, other similar institutions or even third-party service providers. A mining organization is no different from other organizations in that adopting and implementing effective operational excellence programs can dramatically improve business execution and performance across regional or global interests. This paper brings together various perspectives of operational excellence and reconciles them for a useful composite for the mining industry. While most agree that operational excellence should include normal functions in a manufacturing operation such as production, maintenance and engineering and processes such as quality, environmental and continuous improvement, many other factors for operational excellence seem to vary from perspective to perspective. Thus, programs that manufacturers engage in may seem the same, but may, in fact, be different in key areas. This may affect organizational performance in tangible ways. Management must buy into the company?s definition of operational excellence and be dedicated to achieving it. A review of many of the existing definitions of operational excellence, explicit or embedded as part of a program, seems to yield the following common factors: ? It should help organizations better execute their processes and services. ? It should be geared towards improving quality ? It requires that the various operations should be aligned with the overall enterprise strategy. ? It should be geared towards continuous improvement. A composite of operational excellence definitions suggest that it is: ? Geared towards helping the organization achieve sustained profitability; ? tied to strategic alignment and business objectives; ? tied to solid investment strategies; ? integrated as part of the culture, process, time plan and performance; ? a relevant performance measurement system; ? extended to include all aspects of the supply chain (including external suppliers); ? integrated with health, safety and environmental (HSE) aspects. And, while the pursuit of operational excellence intuitively suggests that businesses should improve, it is very difficult to achieve given the difficult challenges facing companies today. Mining businesses face numerous pressures to perform in a global marketplace such as demand, energy cost, variable cost and pricing fluctuations as well as infrastructure challenges to further confound the environment. A column flotation system was designed to conduct release analyses of a very finely disseminated, stratiform, copper ore from the Denali Copper Prospect, Alaska. Chalcopyrite is finely disseminated in a carbonate matrix and pyrite is disseminated in both the chalcopyrite and gangue, requiring grinding to 20 microns for adequate liberation. A 25 mm x 2.4 m glass flotation column was designed. The ore and its flotation tailings were repeatedly floated to obtain a rougher concentrate, which was repeatedly floated to produce release fractions. These were analyzed for copper, iron calcium and magnesium. Release curves were plotted. The procedure was replicated at each of two grinds; 99% and 88% passing 37 microns (400 mesh), and should find application for flotation characterization and process selection. Bond grindability work was also conducted.

"The Sydvaranger magnetite mine closed in 1996 due to low iron ore prices and was reopened in 2009. The flowsheet has remained more or less as in the old plant, based upon two grinding steps followed by magnetic separation. The magnetite is free of harmful elements and should be attractive on the high quality market. This requires a concentrate containing less than 2% SiO2, which previously was achieved by amine flotation. Amine was preferred because it could be used with sea water. The use of amine is now restricted by the Norwegian Climate and Pollution Agency. Therefore, testwork to replace cationic with anionic flotation was done. Activation of quartz with Ca or Mg ions prior to anionic flotation was shown by research from 1960 to 1980 to be effective under laboratory conditions. The old research results have been followed up in order to make a commercial process for Sydvaranger. Calcium activation works excellently with all Sydvaranger ores, including the ones containing amphibole minerals, but Ca activation requires the high and not environmentally friendly pH of 12.4. Magnesium activation at pH 10.5 is a little more challenging, because the maximum concentration of MgOH+ is about 100 times lower than that of CaOH+. Fortunately, the major impurity in the main Bjornevatn orebody is quartz, which responds well to Mg activation. The process does not appear to depend much upon water quality, as the silicates may already be activated during grinding and magnetic separation in recycled water. The new process is environmentally friendly, as only well-known household reagents are used; oleic acid or tall oil, dextrin, sodium hydroxide and magnesium chloride at pH 10.5.IntroductionThe processing plant of Sydvaranger Gruve AS (SVG) is located in the port town of Kirkenes in the northernmost part of Norway, 10 km by rail from the high-grade deposit of Bjornevatn. This plant has been able to beneficiate magnetite ore to up to 99.5% purity, as described by Sandvik and Malvik (2001). Using the magnetic properties of the ore and making the most out of its enviable liberation characteristics, the original plant consisted of ball mills and 600-mm magnetic separators. The plant was shut down due to market conditions in 1996 but reopened in 2009."

Construction of the Cerro Colorado on-off leach pad in northern Chile required placement of approximately 3,000,000m3 of fill over a P1an area of approximately 600,000m in irregular terrain with relief of up to 40m. Earthwork construction was completed in approximately six months using mine waste which was placed in 4 to 6m lifts using mine haul trucks. The lift thickness was reduced and the compactive effort increased in the upper 10m to enable development of a mat and additional resistance to possible differential settlements under dynamic (earthquake) conditions. A single 80 mil (2mm) HOPE liner was used below the leach pads and this was protected from the loading and unloading equipment using an engineered liner system consisting of screened sand, gravel and silt from local sources as the bedding and cover layers, and a heel of screened gravel and primary crushed low grade ore. Settlement monitoring, field testing and subsequent assessments of liner performance have indicated an adequate design was achieved and the project proceeded with considerable savings in time and construction costs.

A new coal boom is under way in western Canada. As recently as the mid-1960's, the coal industry in western Canada was considered stagnant and, by some people, dying. But Japan's growing need for coking coal, which became more pronounced in 1966, sparked great interest in western Canadian reserves.' As a result of a rapidly expanding export market and growth in domestic demand, Canadian coal production spurted to 16.6 million tons in 1970. Production in 1965 was 11.5 million tons. Today, about 60 percent of Canada's output comes from western Canada, but by 1975, 87 percent (23.1 million tons) is expected to come from this area, and 96 percent (68.3 million tons) by 1990. Opening, developing and operating new coal mines to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding market for western Canadian metallurgical coals pose some unique and difficult problems. Covering nearly every aspect of opening properties in remote areas, the problems are met in exploration, transportation, construction, mine operations, coal preparation, manpower and ecology. Paul Weir Company has been involved as coal consultants on various projects in western Canada for some years. In presenting this paper, we make no attempt to present an in-depth or detailed analysis of any one specific situation.
