The last one decade in India had witnessed phenomenal growth in the coal, lignite, iron ore, limestone and many other minerals. To meet the production of minerals, the energy requirement is also very high both in terms of petroleum products and electrical energy. Because of spiralling prices of crude oil and also of the electrical energy, attempts have been made by various mining companies to select energy efficient mining machineries (in underground and surface) mines, together with energy efficient mining and mineral processing operations. Mineral sector of India is working seriously in tune with the Planning Commission stipulations to conserve energy.Apart from energy use (both electrical and fossil fuels) in mining, it is also significantly contributing to the cost of mineral processing depending on the quality of ore/rock being processed. Over the years a number of studies have been initiated and implemented to reduce cost of energy bill. An attempt has been made to present the various aspects of energy conservation, Impact of Energy Conservation Act 2001, Relevance of energy audit, areas of energy consumption and conservation efforts, etc in this paper. The paper also deals with some of the case studies to show how energy conservation programs has been implemented in the Indian mineral sector.

Recent exploration efforts in Eastern Interior, Alaska have discovered significant ca 72 Ma Au-Cu-Ag sulfide-amphibole skarn mineralisation within metamorphic rocks of the Yukon Tanana Terrane, 20 km SE of Tok, Alaska. Contango ORE, Inc’s 1.1 Moz Au-equivalent Peak deposit skarn discovery is hosted by an argillaceous marble layer in quartzite and micaceous quartz schist. This skarn mineralisation is both younger and much more Cu-rich than the typical ca 90 Ma Au intrusive-related gold deposits in the Tintina Gold Belt (eg Ft Knox and Pogo). Silicates at the Peak skarn are predominantly high Cl-, randomly oriented, Fe-rich amphibole, lesser chlorite and minor (<1 per cent) residual clinopyroxene (Hd80–90). Amphibole is ferroedenite to hastingsite and contains up to 4.2 wt per cent Cl-. Pb-Zn-Sb veins are most distal and cut schist wall rocks and amphibole skarn. The predominant sulfide mineral is pyrrhotite, with subordinate arsenopyrite and lesser chalcopyrite, native gold, minor pyrargyrite (Ag3SbS3), trace Jonassonite (AuBi5S4) and maldonite (Au2Bi). Native bismuth, galena, hedlyite (Bi7Te3) and Joseite-A (Bi4TeS2) are also present.Unmineralised garnet (Ad38–43) + pyroxene (Hd60–63) and pyroxene-rich (Hd76–80) skarn occurs in different fault blocks from the Peak skarn and represent proximal skarn related to different intrusive centres. Amphibolites in the region are true metabasites, display metamorphic fabrics and lack the high Fe-Cl compositions of the amphiboles in mineralised skarn. Residual clinopyroxene in the Peak skarn is rare, and most of the hornblende is coarse radial splays that shows no evidence for replacement of pyroxene. Consequently, we propose that the sulfides and hornblende were mostly direct replacements of argillaceous marble and not formed by retrograde alteration of pyroxene-rich skarn. The high-Cl amphiboles indicate that the fluids were Cl-rich and presumably carried Cu via Cl complexing, unlike the Cl-poor fluids associated with ca 90 Ma Cu-poor deposits of the region.CITATION:Illig, P and Newberry, R, 2015. The stratigraphy of the Western Coalfield is briefly reviewed and the important units of the Lithgow Coal Measures, particularly the coal seams, are defined. The possibility of coal measures of Tomago age ocurring near the edges of the Sydney Basin is discussed onpresent evidence.Using data obtained from unpublished drilling records, detailed structural, isopachous and lithofaeies maps have been drawn. These show that the structure of the coal basin has been influenced by the underlying basement in many ways.The prominent jointing in the overlying Triassic sandstones is discussed in relation to jointing in the coal measure sediments.It is concluded that in addition to the general knowledge obtained with respect to the coal basin, useful information regarding coal quality and quantity can be gained by the study of broader sedimentary and structural features.INTRODUCTIONThe term "Western Coalfield" covers approximately the area from Katoomba to Rylstone, together with the smaller, separate Ulan area (Fig. 1). The area studied is part of the great sedimentary Sydney basin named by Osborne (1948). The first discovery of coal in Sitlt in the area was made in 1824 by Andrew Brown, although George Bass noted the presence of coal float in the Grose River in 1797. Production is recorded from the Western Coalfield in 1838 but mining was intermittent until 1868 when mines in the Lithgowvalley (producing coal from the Lithgow Seam) came into production. In 1882 the Katoomba Seam was first worked at Katoomba.The work of J. E. Carne (1903, 1908) defined the limits of the Coal Measure sediments and also contributed a great amount of valuable detailed information about the region.

The Patawarta Diapir, located in the northern Flinders Ranges (South Australia), has intruded into late Proterozoic Wilpena Group sedimentary rocks. The diapir contains disrupted blocks of a wide variety of rock types, most of which can be correlated with the Lower Callanna Beds of Willouran age, in a matrix of predominantly carbonate and siltstone breccia. Mafic rocks in the diapir appear to predate intrusion of the diapir. As with many other diapirs in the Flinders Ranges, copper mineralization is present in the diapir and occurs as narrow veins consisting essentially of carbonate with chalcopyrite and pyrite that formed after diapiric intrusion.Fluid inclusion studies demonstrate that the mineralizing fluid was a Na-Ca-K-Cl brine; probably derived by expulsion of interstitial water following emplacement of the diapir, with dissolution of evaporites within the Callanna Beds sediments and enrichment in copper by reaction with these sediments and associated basic igneous rocks. Mineral assemblages combined with fluid inclusion and geochemical data indicate a possible environment of vein formation of T ÿ 165°C, pH ÿ 4.3 ± 0.9 and log fO2 ÿ -47.3 ± 0.5. Sulphur isotope analyses indicate d34Sfluid ÿ 10 per mil, suggesting evaporites in the Proterozoic sediments as the major source of the sulphur but with some additional sulphur from an igneous source, possibly leached from the malic rocks of the diapir.

In the proposed criterion for coal a distinction is made between brittle and "psuedo-ductile" failure. This criterion is the basis for the development of new equations for coal pillar strength, including a transition from brittle fracture to pseudo-ductile yielding. In addition the equations obtained allow the critical minimum pillar dimensions to be calculated to avoid "catastrophic" and "ultimate failure".The validity of these formulae can be tested by comparing their results with pillar case histories derived from the literature.

Two types of low-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation may be recognised in volcanic terranes. Chalcedonic Silica- Adularia-Illite type mineralisation is most common in rhyolitic terranes, whereas Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia- Kaolinite) type mineralisation is more typically formed in andesitic terranes. A third type of epithermal mineralisation, the high sulphidation or Vuggy Silica-Alunite- Kaolinite-Illite type, is also common in andesitic terranes. Episodic violent boiling, accompanying hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions, characteristic of geothermal systems in rhyolitic terranes, is stressed for the formation of Chalcedonic Silica mineralisation. Such boiling of deeply circulating meteoric groundwater, with some magmatic fluid contribution, provides chalcedonic veining, episodic banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S from the fluid to cause major gold deposition. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably caused by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwater with ascending deep geothermal fluids beneath andesitic strato- volcanoes. The cooling effect, oxidation, and increased acidity, overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of metals. Extensive formation of base-metal sulphides further enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling is restricted to local structural dilation sites, potentially producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

It has long been recognised that Australia can benefit substantially in an economic sense from its rich resource base. The significant resources of the Gippsland Basin are a good example of the wealth of this nation. As cited in popular debate, Australia must value-add to its natural resources to ensure its long term economic prosperity. The significant oil, gas and coal resources of the Gippsland Basin have provided the Strategic Research Foundation with the basis for two major research and development initiatives ensuring the long term economic development of the Basin and Australia. The gas and coal reserves of the Basin together with the area's extensive history in electricity generation provide the rationale for establishing Ceramic Fuel Cells Ltd. A consortium comprising Australia's leading industrialist - BHP, State energy authorities and the Nation's major research and development organisations, has formed Ceramic Fuel Cells to undertake and manage research, development and commercialisation of solid oxide (ceramic) fuel cells which convert fossil fuels directly to electricity with greater efficiency and less pollution than existing technologies. The oil and gas resources of the Basin together with the valuable experience of the operators in recovering these resources, have provided the impetus to investigate the feasibility of a Marine Engineering Research Centre. The commercially oriented research, education and training objectives of the Centre are well supported by the leading industrialists in related industries.

The total world steel production in 1998 amounted to approximately 780 000 000 t. The share of electric steelmaking was in the range of 35 per cent and is expected to increase further to over 40 per cent of the world's production within the next ten years. As electric steelmaking is primarily based on the use of scrap and as it is progressing more and more into higher steel grades the need for low-residual metallics will become increasingly important. Consequently, the demand for scrap substitute material will increase, reflected in the world wide spate of interest for DRI (Direct Reduced Iron) and HBI (Hot Briquetted Iron). The increased significance of DRI/HBI as a substitute for steel scrap has obviously emanated also from its comparatively lower and more predictable costs per ton and definable chemistry. In 1998 already 37 million tons of DRI/HBI were globally produced.

Tougher physical mining and processing conditions as well as economic circumstances are causing many mining companies to re-evaluate the effectiveness of their mine planning. The recent wave of inexpensive computing power provides the engineer an opportunity to go beyond the simple one-off manual mine design and production schedule. The basis of a good mine plan is a good reserves model. Concepts of mine model development are explored. The only advanced computer methods that have found consistent success in optimising mine planning functions are economic pit limits determination and material scheduling. Three pit 'optimisation' methods are examined; the moving cone, the Lerchs-Grossman 3-D graph algorithm, and the new network flow algorithm. A comparison between the methods in terms of total profits generated and computer time involved are made. The results show that both algorithms produced a higher profitability than the simple moving cone, but at much higher execution times. However, the profit increase never exceeded much more than 1 % of the base moving cone case. Finally, a method for the development of long range material production schedules with forward waste planning is presented.

This paper summarises the development t,) date for the Hidden Valley Gold (HVG) Project. It starts with the original exploration work, covers the detailed feasibility study activities and concludes with the current phase of extra exploration drilling. A brief technical summary has been made from the various mining, process and environmental studies that were undertaken as part of the project approval process. A discussion of the influential non-technical factors is included, as well as a view of the future prospects for an operating mine. The project was always seen as marginal, given the low grades, small resource and short mine life. However the capital and operating costs were lowered with aggressive design and it was regarded an acceptable development by CRA. The opportunity was taken to review the project when delays in start-up were encountered. An updated financial evaluation showed a subeconomic resource in 1990 terms and this resulted in a new exploration phase to identify a larger deposit.

THE flotation plant at Mount Lyell was erected, primarily, for the treatment of ore from the Lyell Comstock mine. These workings are situated over a mile in a direct line north of the North Mount Lyell mine, and are connected with the Reduction Work at Queenstown by a 2-ft. gauge steel tramway via the Queen River valley a distance of 7 miles. The property was purchased from the Mount Lyell Comstock Copper Co. After the disastrous fire in the North Mount Lyell mine in October, 1912, steps were immediately taken to make Lyell Comstock ore available for treatment, in order to relieve distress caused by any prolonged stoppage of work, and subsequently 13,032 tons of ore, averaging 3.38 %copper, 0.28 oz. silver, and 0.034 oz. gold; were smelted. When operations were resumed at the North Mount Lyell mine, it was evident that there was no economic advantage in smelting Lyell Comstock ore as compared with the higher value North Mount Lyell ore, which was also a better flux for the Mount Lyell pyrites, and that the future of the Lyell Comstock ore depended upon cheap mining and successful concentration of the ore. Therefore, extensive trenching and diamond-drilling was carried out, and a sufficiently large quantity of ore proved available for cheap extraction by open-cut methods. At the same time bulk tests by flotation were carried out at the Minerals Separation testing plant in Melbourne on different classes of ore from the Mount Lyell Comstock mine proper, followed by laboratory tests at Queenstown on all classes of ore available. All these tests demonstrated that the ore was amenable to the process, provided that it was ground finely enough. This paper describes new research and development currently being undertaken by the CSIRO Mining Technology Group to advance the automation capability of continuous mining equipment in underground coal mining operations. The effort aims at increasing the overall rate of roadway development as well as providing a safer working environment for underground mine personnel. The activity is funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) and forms part of a larger underground development initiative, known as the CM2010 project. The CM2010 is managed via a consortium of leading mining industry representatives through the Roadway Development Task Group (RDTG). The Task Group has identified three research areas requiring new development in order to realise the CM2010 project objectives: self-guiding (autonomous) continuous miner capability, an enhanced drilling and bolting process and improved mesh deployment. CSIRO's primary role in the CM2010 project is in the development of the autonomous continuous miner guidance capability.This paper reports on outcomes achieved at the half-way mark of a three year research and development project. It details the technical developments undertaken towards demonstration of a 'self-steering' capability to enable a continuous miner to automatically maintain a given mining heading and mining horizon under production conditions. A primary technical requirement of this automated functionality is the means to accurately determine both the location and orientation of the continuous miner in real-time. Testing and validation of the guidance system solution has been implemented using a combination of an instrumentation-grade inertial navigation unit and radar technology. Comprehensive performance evaluations have been conducted using a scale skid-steer mobility platform known as the Phoenix. Results achieved to the present stage of the project are highly promising and suggest that an automated self-steering functionality is achievable under production conditions. This new outcome represents an important move towards implementing a step change improvement for future underground roadway development.

During the 1980s and early 1990s low cost gold treatment plants were at the forefront of the Australian engineering and mineral processing business. This opportunity was the result of a high gold price and innovative design by emerging engineering companies in an expanding market. The low cost approach to gold plant design and project execution resulted in smaller and shorter life projects becoming viable and the multiplicity and fast track approach of the projects resulted in sharp learning curves. From the mid 1990s to the early 2000s the relatively low commodity prices and resultant reduction in minerals opportunities also resulted in innovative design in both small and large plants, albeit on a reduced scale. The innovation was associated with alleviating capital cost pressures for large capacity low-grade (eg NewcrestÆs Cadia) or small-scale (eg JubileeÆs Cosmos) projects to either improve NPV or to enable the project to be won and profitable in the competitive lump sum environment. Between 2004 and 2008 the engineering market became less competitive from an engineerÆs perspective due to the high demand for engineering services in a high price commodity market. The need for innovation remained but was driven overtly by shortages in water, power and personnel and long equipment lead times. This paper discusses some of the factors that contribute to the capital cost of a project and the scope for improving the likelihood of financing and increasing the project net present value (NPV). Case studies with recent large copper concentrator projects will be used to demonstrate how a value driven approach to project and plant layout can result in significant improvement in NPV.

The sequences in alteration and mineralisation from five copper-gold porphyry systems (Taysan and Didipio, Philippines; Horse-Ivaal and Wafi River, PNG; and Goonumbla, Australia) and one gold-copper skarn system (Browns Creek, Australia) are documented in this paper. Alteration and mineralisation in all these systems reflect a common evolution from crystallisation of melts emplaced at shallow crustal levels (zoned potassic -> propylitic alteration), followed by exsolution of volatile-rich fluids from these melts (porphyry quartz ¦K-feldspar/biotite veins and local high temperature advanced argillic alteration), to a progressive cooling of the intrusion which results in associated retrograde alteration. Copper-gold mineralisation in all cases is almost exclusively restricted to the cooler retrograde events. The recognition of the temporal and spatial zonations in alteration and mineralisation in gold-copper porphyry systems has significant relevance in the interpretation of geophysical signatures, overprinting alteration, vein sequences and structural controls, and can lead to more focused and potentially more cost-effective exploration.

Marble deposits of dolomitic variety are available in large quantities in India and for extracting these deposits diamond wire saw cutting machine is mainly used. Cutting performance of the diamond wire saw machine depends on rock parameters, machine parameters and operational parameters. Rock parameters related to physico-mechanical properties, such as, compressive strength, tensile strength, shear strength, modulus of elasticity and abrasion resistance of marble play role in determining cutting rate and beads wear rate. Thus, this study was undertaken to determine the relationship between different physico-mechanical properties and cutting performance. This work also aimed at enhancing the cutting performance of diamond wire saw in dolomitic marble deposit. Study was conducted in the field at three different zones having deposit of soft, medium hard and hard dolomitic marble. During the study, cutting rates and wearing of diamond beads were recorded in the field. Physico-mechanical properties were determined in the laboratory. The results obtained were subsequently evaluated by using statistical analysis. Study revealed that these properties of marble play a significant role in the performance of diamond wire saw machine. Predictive equations for the wearing of diamond beads and cutting rate were developed based on regression models. Results of this study will be of ample use for operators of wire saw to achieve maximum cutting performance and for manufacturers in designing the diamond beads.

Rio Tinto has embarked on a journey to use automation to improve the performance of its surface mines. The driver for automation is to improve the accuracy and consistency of mining processes and less to do with cost savings through labour reduction. A key task in most surface mines is blasthole drilling. The degree to how well this is done cascades through the downstream mining process. It impacts scheduling, excavation, slope stability, material handling, beneficiation and final product blending. Improved blasthole drilling was identified as an objective that has a significant business case in most of Rio Tinto's surface mines. This paper describes Rio Tinto's drill enhancement project that has developed a robust system for automating most of the functions on a Terex SKSS16 drill rig. Automated drilling is currently being used in production at the West Angelas iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. A description of the essential elements of the drill automation system is given together with an overview of how automated drilling is performed remotely from the mine office. A review of some of the benefits of the enhanced drill system is given together with the future plans to extend the functionality of the automated drill and the expected benefits.

In most mines using presplitting the final excavated wall shows a zone of damage just below the crest and well defined presplit half barrels. The crest damage (surface dilation) zone varies and is added to by subsequent adjacent perimeter blasting operations. Keeping the preconditioning to a minimum is possible using the methods described in this paper, developed on several diverse and geographically distant mining operations to control crest dilation and preconditioning by presplitting in advance - not just laterally but vertically in advance. The first documented case (Delbridge, Marton and McSweeney, 2004) in the development of the concept was undertaken at AngloGold Australia Pty Ltd's Sunrise Dam Gold Mine (SDGM), located beside Lake Carey, some 730 km northeast of Perth, Western Australia. The mine had been developed in a series of cutbacks to a depth of over 300 m and began underground mining during the latter stages of open cut operations. This mine is fairly unique in that it utilised a single pass vertical presplit which initially extended over three bench heights and after the failure mechanisms were understood, over four benches. The presplit drilling for the three stacked benches started on the floor of the second bench so that any dilation was confined to the surface one bench above the crest and modified perimeter blasting was then developed to curtail damage from blasting adjacent to the new crest. The second case is based on a South African coal mine in the Witbank Coal Measures, 140 km northeast of Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa (RSA). It was important that blasting for optimal wall stability and minimal scaling was developed in advance. A dragline is scheduled to excavate the #2 seam midburden which is the lowest of the economically viable coal seams in the five seam Witbank Coal Measures. Mining of the overburden, coal and partings above the dragline midburden pass are by excavator and truck and each mining layer is individually blasted. The results of presplitting the midburden through the overlying coal seams and partings have provided a presplit with no surface dilation of the midburden crest and ensures any subsequent crest loss is solely due to blasting adjacent to the vertical presplit. Typical of all coal mines in South Africa only vertical presplits are used. Wall control is most commonly delivered by presplit blasting and one common sight after the dust clears is a ridge of broken blocks along the presplit row, usually with a main crack running between the presplit blastholes and often parallel cracks either side of the perimeter line. The surface rock strata or block structures have been dilated by the venting gases and shock waves. Decoupled, fully coupled, single or double deck charges are used depending on a variety of factors, anecdotal practices and perceived benefits. Preconditioning of the crest rock by blasting from above may not be visible to the naked eye (or non-existent in overburden in strip coal mines) but the high speed venting of explosives gases (and often the water in the presplits) preferentially follow existing cracks and structures because there is no developed presplit crack near the surface. This nearly always lifts, shifts and separates the surface structures and geological layers. Stopping the dilation by 'sacrificial' or 'in advance' presplitting has been shown to reduce the crest loss at both metal and coal mines. Drilling and presplit blasting through an upper level of bench or layer provides a degree of restraint to the target layer where the crest must be maintained and any damage caused by the venting gases will not cause concern as it is removed as planned, leaving a stable crest.

The Telfer main dome open pit is operated by Newcrest Mining Limited at a current production rate of 50 Mt/a from a pit dimension compromising 2 km strike length, 1 km width and 250 m depth. As part of the refeasibility of the Telfer operation undertaken early this decade, Newcrest identified that an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation along with an increased scale of open pit would support a new plant targeting the processing of gold and copper ore at 17 Mt/a rates. The SLC was initiated in late 2006 and broke into the open pit in late 2009. This situation is unique across the mining industry where a cave breakthrough was planned and occurred within an active large open pit operation. The SLC broke though into the west side of the Main Dome open pit into a specially prepared bench that was left at the 5384 RL of cut-back stage 3. A main haulage ramp is within 100 m from the edge of the cave breakthrough zone and this ramp passes down to the active levels which are progressing toward the 5200 RL. This paper presents insight into the mine planning and risk management associated with continued operation of the open pit operation while an active SLC breaks through. The cave breakthrough presents unique areas for risk management as there is potential for rapid propagation and subsidence. To support the undertaking, mine design and major hazard management planning has been carried out. Focus areas include; dual ramp system design, preloading the breakthrough area, monitoring of cave propagation and air gap using a seismic system and deep hole extensometers, wall stability and subsidence monitoring using radar and prism systems, and key trigger and response planning.

Longwall mining and related subsidence, and watercourse diversion for surface mining operations have the potential to impact on fluvial geomorphic processes and the health of river systems. This is evident in the Isaac River in central Queensland. The scale and likelihood of these impacts are a function of the extent of existing and proposed mining developments and of the ongoing geomorphic, hydrologic and ecological processes within the Isaac River. Understanding the objectives for the river, the past and ongoing processes at work, the cumulative impacts of longwall mining development and the options for managing those impacts is essential for the development of an effective strategy to manage the health of the river system. An assessment has been undertaken to identify and understand the cumulative impacts of mining subsidence and other mining influences on geomorphic processes and waterway health in the Isaac River over a river length of approximately 100 km near Moranbah in central Queensland. The assessment included the development of a vision and objectives for waterway health. The assessment has identified mining and landuse changes that have impacted on the hydrology, geomorphology, ecology and hence the health of the Isaac River. The assessment has then sought to identify the cumulative impact of longwall mining and related subsidence on current stream condition and the proposed vision for the system. The primary impact of longwall mining on the river was found to be associated with sediment transport. The investigation included assess- ment of total sand available for transport, the volume of sand transported annually and the fluvial process response to subsidence. Recommendations have been developed for the management of the system and for longwall mining to increase system robustness and achieve the river health objectives.
