This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1953 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 101 samples of aviation gasoline which include, for the second time in this series of reports, data on some samples of grade 108/135 aviation fuel. Data also are given for 32 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers' production in their laboratories and the results sub-mitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 19 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 19 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

All parameters influencing the decision for selection of a suitable extraction method were first selected as the base of this study. Then these parameters were categorized in two main groups. The first group of the parameters includes ?geomechanical and inherent characteristics of the dimension stones? such as hardness, RQD, compressive strength, joints plane orientation and spacing, and water content. The second group was named ?technical and economical parameters associated with the investor?s objectives? like for example extraction capacity (production rate), blocks recovery, mechanization, capital investment and operational costs. Finally, the influences of all mentioned parameters on the selection of the most applicable extraction methods have been assessed and discussed.

Acrylamide chemical grout (C3H2NO) has been successfully used for over 50 years to control groundwater and stop infiltration. This paper will address three unique projects involving the control of groundwater with each study providing special circumstances and geological conditions: encapsulation of radioactive hazardous waste in the United States, a tailings dam for a large copper/gold mine in Argentina and 27 miles of leaking subway in Canada. The primary reasons for selecting acrylamide grout were based on the following characteristics: thinnest chemical grout on the market, a true solution grout which contains no suspended solids in the blended product, flexible gel set times, and a 362 year half-life in soil as determined by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Two epiclastic horizons in an Archean volcanic sequence host the gold occurrences on the Dunraine property near Wawa, Ontario, Canada. The Grace horizon of cherty and pelitic tuff strikes north-northwest and dips east. Native gold occurs with arsenopyrite in bedlike and podlike bodies of quartz lenses and stringers set in a pelitic matrix. The Parkhill horizon of lithic graywacke with associated flow-breccia strikes southwest and dips south. Native gold occurs with minor sulfides in similar bodies of quartz erratic within the Parkhill horizon. The auriferous bodies occupy paleotopographic channels and troughs within the two horizons. The former producers are the Parkhill mine with 1689 kg (54,300 oz) Au, Darwin mine with 473 kg (15,200 oz) Au, and Van Sickle mine with 48 kg (1536 oz) Au between 1902 and 1944. The gold occurrences are syndepositional with the host volcanic sediments laid during a pause in explosive volcanism. Fumaroles along steep gullies on the flank of a subaqueous volcanic center precipitated aprons of auriferous silica-sulfide mud. Downslope slumping resulted in exhalative debris flows; gold concentrated in flexures and depressions along stumpage channels. Renewed explosive volcanism covered the auriferous sediments with pyroclastic tuffs, arresting the slumping of in situ fumarolic deposits.

Permissible exposure limits (PELs) have been established for gaseous pollutants, carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and some gas-phase hydrocarbons emitted in diesel exhaust. There is, as yet, no PEL recommended for diesel exhaust aerosol (DEA), nor is there a standard method for sampling this aerosol. The University of Minnesota and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have collaborated to develop a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler (PDEAS) which utilizes size-selective inertial impaction and gravimetric analysis. During the field tests of this sampler, numerous air quality measurements were made in underground coal mines that use diesel equipment. The mine mean DEA concentrations for the five mines surveyed, determined with the PDEAS in the haulageway, was 0.89 mg/m3 with a standard deviation of 0.44 mg/m3. DEA contributed 52 % of the respirable aerosol at this location. In three of the mines filter samples were collected for DEAassociated polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and biological activity determinations. Two of the mines were also monitored for the major gaseous constituents found in diesel exhaust. In general, the PAH and biological activity levels were similar for all three mines, and indicate that up to 25 % of the haulageway concentrations may be contributed by outby diesel vehicles. Measured concentrations of CO, C02, NO, NO2, and SO2, were well below regulated levels. INTRODUCTION Diesel exhaust contains pollutant gases, such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and gas-phase hydrocarbons, as well as DEA. Much of the health-related concern focuses on DEA and associated organic compounds (Watts, 1992a). A wide variety of these PAHs have been identified and some are known carcinogens and/or mutagens. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has proposed new PELs for these and other contaminants (MSHA, 1989). MSHA has also published an advance notice of proposed rulemaking to establish a separate PEL for diesel particulate (MSHA, 1992). The U.S. Bureau of Mines has collaborated with the University of Minnesota to develop and field test a PDEAS. The PDEAS is a three stage sampler based on the MSA' personal respirable dust sampler. It utilizes a respirable cyclone preclassifier followed by a 0.8 µm cut point impactor and afterfilter operating at a flow rate of 2 L/min. Respirable aerosol greater than 0.8, µm in size is collected by the impactor while DEA, less than 0.8 µm in size, is collected by the afterfilter. Hence, gravimetric analysis of the afterfilter permits measurement of DEA concentrations. This development and laboratory evaluation of the PDEAS were described previously by Cantrell (1990) and Rubow (1990). During field tests of the sampler, numerous air quality measurements were made in continuous miner sections of five underground coal mines that use diesel haulage equipment. These air quality measurements included levels of selected PAH and biological activity associated with DEA collected in the intake and haulageway areas of three of the five underground mines, and CO, CO2, NO, and NO2 in two of the mines. The objectives of this paper are to present the DEA and associated pollutant concentrations measured in these mines and to assess the impact of diesel face-haulage equipment on underground mine air quality. MINE DESCRIPTIONS The mines used for the PDEAS evaluation were designated J, K, L, N, and 0. Mines K, N, and 0 are located in the Western United States, while mines J and L are located in the East. Each mine produces high volatile, bituminous coal with shift production levels varying from 500 to 2000 tons/section. Seam heights varied from 1.5 to 3.0 m. Mines K and N use continuous mining to develop longwall panels. The others are strictly room-and-pillar operations using continuous miners. The number and types of diesel-powered vehicles used at these mines were described by Watts (1992b). Mines J, K, N, and 0 use diesel power to assist in a wide range of activities in addition to coal haulage. These included road maintenance, personnel and materials transport, lubrication, and welding. Mine L used only three diesel-powered shuttle cars to haul coal. SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS METHODS Aerosol Measurements Aerosol samples were collected in the mine portal area, the clean air intake to the continuous miner section, the haulageway one crosscut inby from the feeder breaker and belt, in the return airway, and on selected personnel. The haulageway sampling site was located near the point where the diesel-powered shuttle cars turn around to dump their loads. Additional respirable and DEA samples were collected and have been reported by Haney (1990).

The reassessment of coal reserves has become a matter of urgency and has come as a result of the present situation of the industry, in the context of globalized coal economies, as well as new mining legislation and the advantages and difficulties of domestic coal suppliers. The de Jager report concerning coal reserves, released twenty years ago, can no longer be used as an estimate for accurately forecasting South Africa’s future coal production. The new reserve and resource study will promote the diversification of energy sources and provide a clearer view of the future of coal mining in the country. With plans to increase South Africa’s coal export capacity to approximately 84 million tons by 2005, it is uncertain whether the country really has sufficient reserves to meet this expansion, as well as satisfy the projected increase in inland demand. The face of South Africa’s coal industry and by association, the economy of our coal-dependent country, are both set to change. This is mainly due to factors such as the demise of most of the large collieries over the last approximately twenty years, growing numbers of economic empowerment producers, the emergence of strong competition in the export market, the dawn of Clean Coal Technologies (CCTs) and the Kyoto Protocol The paper will attempt to dispel some of the current myths about coalfields and reserves and highlight potential areas of high quality coal reserves, available mainly to new entrants in the industry. In a paper presented at the Heavy Minerals Conference 2001 a laboratory scale investigation on the beneficiation of an ilmenite containing waste stream by magnetizing roasting was reported1.This waste stream contained a high concentration of ilmenite, which was contaminated by chromite and other gangue minerals. Interpretation of the results of the investigation was based on the assumption that during magnetizing roasting of an ilmenite concentrate, under the oxidizing conditions, the magnetic properties of the chromite would remain constant. In this article thefollowing hypothesis was tested: The magnetic susceptibility of chromite would remain constant during magnetizing roasting of an ilmenite concentrate under the oxidizing conditions reported by Gouws and Van Dyk1. The results of this study indicated that the hypothesis is not true. The increase in the magnetic susceptibility is not significant though and it is expected that it will not influence the final ilmenite quality to a large extent. Based on the assumptions that the bulk magnetic susceptibility of the waste stream samples represents that of the ilmenite in the waste stream, and the bulk magnetic susceptibility of UG1 chromite that of the of chromite in the waste stream, the results also served to confirm that the waste stream with a high chromite content should be roasted under oxidizing conditions, in a reactor with a well-defined retention time distribution (i.e. a fluidized bed reactor), at a roasting temperature of 750°C (rather than the higher temperature ranges of 800°C and 850°C).

Thank you for your introduction and the opportunity to speak at such an important forum. I feel honoured to be the Tas McKee speaker for this yearÆs conference. I can honestly say that Tas McKee typified the spirit that has ensured the survival of the mining industry despite the modern-day challenges that we encounter. He was one of the most influential people in the New Zealand minerals industry. In 1938, with his father and brother, Tas established Lime & Marble Limited. Over its history, this company evolved from its original base of marble mining to diversify into gold mining and exploration for other industrial minerals, uranium, precious and base metals. He was truly a pioneer that persevered against the odds.   That leads me to the subject of my discussion today. I am going to delve into todayÆs challenges as they apply to gold companies. While we gold miners should be generating record returns, the gold industry shareholder return performance in this buoyant market has barely equalled that of the gold price. It is a dilemma but one that can be resolved with the right strategy.

When the writer first began his search for the early history of coal he was amazed at the paucity of information in literature about it, and while after six years many of the reasons for such a scarcity are understood, there are still many cases, even within the last two centuries, when one who can appreciate the tremendous part coal has played in the development of modern times, finds it hard to realize how little attention was paid to this material in those early clays. Occasionally a traveller or observer is found who foresaw how valuable coal was to be when industries were developed, but these were few and to most of those recording its occurrence it was just another mineral. George Washington was farsighted in his view of the development of this country and the need for means of transportation across the mountain barrier, but it was at least sixteen years after he must first have known of coal before he made any reference to it in his journals. He did, however, knowingly or not, select some valuable coal properties in the lands lie obtained in the West. This was then almost entirely an agricultural country, and what industries there were found a great abundance of wood fuel within easy access, there were no steam plants, and all iron was made with charcoal; in fact, the "captive mines" of the iron industry then were large timber "plantations," and when these were exhausted the furnace usually was abandoned and another one built elsewhere, as transportation of charcoal was quite expensive. Along the seaboard the cities and industries began to import coal from England and Nova Scotia early in the eighteenth century, but until the war of the Revolution began the total quantity of coal used yearly in this continent did not exceed nine thousand tons. In 1800 only two places, Pittsburgh and Richmond, Virginia, were using coal to any extent for domestic purposes and it was much later. than this that the amount of coal used in Philadelphia, New fork, and Boston exceeded that of wood. Practically all of the early travellers and writers mentioning coal are noted in the following pages. Liquid epoxy and polyurethanes are an excellent choice for whatever the aggressiveness of the substance transported and whatever the harmful outside influences, maximum protection is required. They can be used as coatings on all kind of pipelines varying from the mainline coating to the field joint coating. Compared with traditional systems like dual layer FBE and 3-layer polyolefin there are some benefits to be considered like easiness of repairs, amount of coats, application temperature and film thickness. The interior coating renders the pipe surface so much smoother that considerable savings can be realized in pump stations. Apart from the interior of the pipeline, the industry is faced with new challenges like higher operating temperatures of lines and an emphasis on product benefits in order to save money. The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1984 was $409.8 million, and established a new record high for value of nonfuel minerals in the State, at 13.4:% over the previous high of 1983. Output of nearly all nonfuel minerals increased; phosphate rock was one of the exceptions, with no recorded output in 1984. Cement, crushed stone, lime, sand and gravel, and clays were the major commodities produced in Alabama. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble; was second in bauxite; third in fire clay and kaolin; fourth in bentonite, ferroalloys, and dimension marble; fifth in masonry cement, lime, and recovered sulfur; and sixth in portland cement. Alabama ranked 22d in the Nation in value of nonfuel minerals produced.

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1982 was $299.4 million, a decrease of $14.4 million from that of 1981; the decrease continued a downward trend that started in 1980. Output of most nonfuel minerals declined; cement, crushed stone, lime, sand and gravel, and clays were the major commodities produced in the State. Despite the decrease in mineral output, Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble; was second in bauxite; third in ferroalloys and oyster shell; fourth in bentonite and dimension marble; fifth in common clay. fire clay, and kaolin; and sixth in masonry cement and lime.

The 81 st Regular Meeting and convention was called to order by the President, Charles W. Margolf at 9:00 a.m. Monday, July l, 1985 in the Silverton Room of Tamarron, a resort hotel near Durango, Colorado. President Margolf welcomed the members and others in attendance to the convention and noted his theme of "Make It Happen!" He introduced those present of the 1985-86 Board of Directors and Officers who were elected by the Board of Directors at their Annual Meeting June 29. They were: Arthur K. Neill, President; Bernard Bernstrom, President-Elect; Loren V. Linville, Convention Liaison Officer; Vice Presidents Douglas J. Hammer of Colorado, C. Joe Presley of Montana, Alva L. We had a cold, gray winter here in Kansas City and I spent a lot of time watching out my den window at the squirrels and birds trying to get by in the lousy weather. I remember too well working in the cold, loading shots. I was frostbitten several times since I couldn’t tie in MS connectors with gloves on. Those old connectors had a piece of detonating cord on either end of a metal tube that held the delay and you tied them to the trunk lines with square knots. Doing this on a “warm” day in Alaska or Montana shooting ditch for a pipeline could be a frosty experience. Also remember how hard it was to connect up electric caps (detonators to you new guys) in the cold. Now I don’t want you to feel sorry for me ‘cause I suspect most of you younger fellows have also paid your dues in the cold and for that matter in the heat too. Wowee, the heat at the bottom of a Chicago dolomite quarry in August was enough to fry the brains of all that were there. Maybe that’s why the third deck of my brains doesn’t exist.

A study of a static demolition agent that can be used underwater has been carried out. A new type of granulated static demolition agent with rapid reaction has been tested in several hundred experiments. It can be used conveniently and simply in the field. It demonstrates a fast reaction rate with high expansion pressures. The important characteristic of the new type of granulated static demolition agent is the ability to function underwater. It will destroy rock and the other brittle material without flyrock, vibration, shock wave, toxic gas or noise. The reaction rate can be controlled within 30-60 minutes. It is difficult to use these products when the reaction rate is less than 30 minutes and it is less efficient when the reaction rate is longer than 60 minutes. The reaction rate is slightly increased after the material is kept in storage for two years. A new type of the hydraulic device that is used to measure the expansion pressure of solid materials has been designed. The expansion pressure of the granulated static demolition agent has been tested with the device. It is shows that the expansion pressure of the granulated static demolition agent can get to 80~120MPa in 60 minutes. Also included is a discussion of the thermodynamics of the static demolition agent.

Pine nut shell is as raw material for preparation of high surface area activated carbon (HSAAC) by microwave induced KOH activation. The effects of microwave power, activation duration and KOH/C mass rate (R) on the iodine adsorption capability and activated carbon yield were investigated. Additionally the surface characteristics of HSAAC were characterized by nitrogen adsorption isotherms and SEM. The operating variables were optimized utilizing the response surface methodology and were identified microwave power 738W, activation duration 17 min, and R 4, corresponding to a yield of 46.28 % and an iodine number of 2154 mg/g. The key pore structure parameters of HSAAC such as the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area and total pore volume were estimated to be 3819 m2/g and 2.09 mL/g, respectively. The findings strongly support the feasibility of microwave heating for preparation of HSAAC from spent pine nut shell by microwave induced KOH activation.

When does a project with questionable viability, warrant further investment? There are cases in which projects, which evaluate to a negative mean probable value, are worth investing in. There are also cases in which projects that evaluate to a positive mean probable value, should not be invested in. The author will present a model for ?project-control?which includes an adaptation of a well know grade-control concept. Comments on Resources and Reserves ?Resource and Reserve estimates are based on positive information (43-101). ?Reserve and Resource confidence qualitatively assessed. ?U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recognizes Undiscovered Resources (U.S. Geological Survey 2003).

A majority of continuous mining machines employ a water spray system and a machine mounted flooded-bed scrubber to suppress and capture dust during coal mining. These machine mounted dust control systems must be designed to function within the localized face ventilation system at the mining section to control both dust and methane. Spray systems can impede or improve the scrubber effectiveness in controlling dust or methane at the mining face. Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the effect of spray type, spray pressure, machine body blocking sprays, and scrubber airflow on dust and gas levels while using a 12.2 m (40 ft) exhaust ventilation curtain setback from the face. These experiments were conducted with the mining machine positioned at the end of a simulated 6.1 m (20 ft) sump and slab cut. Results indicate that the hollow cone nozzles with blocking sprays best complemented the flooded-bed scrubber performance in an exhaust ventilation system. This external spray system notably reduced dust and gas levels on the off-curtain side of the mining machine for both the sump and slab cut as compared to the flat spray nozzles. Higher scrubber airflows reduced dust and gas levels on the curtain side and in the return of the continuous mining machine. The remote operator position, located on the off curtain side and parallel to the inlet end of the exhaust curtain, sustained the most stable and lowest dust levels around the mining machine.
