These proceedings consist of an overview of the underground metal and nonmetal mina fire protection research currently being conducted by the Bureau of Mines. The following papers address the areas of prompt, reliable fire detection, fire planning and warning, fire suppression, and personnel protection. Selected topics are included here that cover fire protection systems for shafts, underground fueling areas, and mobile underground mining equipment; spontaneous combustion, improved stench, and product-of-combustion fire warning systems; computer-aided ventilation modeling; fire doors; and an investigation of fire hazards in mine timbers. The projects described provide a current documentation of problems being addressed.

Investigations of the vibrations of a pile in soil are performed on a dynamic model in the form of a prismatic bar of finite axial and flexural stifnesses with a discrete mass at its free end representing the cap. The soil is represented by a system of springs of constant and variable stiffnesses. Oscillation differential equations are derived by means of the Hamiltonian principle for non-conservative systems. The problem is reduced to a coupled system of two non-linear partial differential equations with corresponding initial-boundary conditions. Frequency equations of longitudinal and lateral linearized equations are formed. The paper determines natural frequenc­ies and oscillation modes. It separately examines longitudinal vibrations excitated by a hermonic force acting upon the pile cap, and lateral vibrations excitated by an impulse acting upon the cap. The results of the numerical processing are presented in respective diagrams in dimensionless form.

The processes and fluxes of a cast iron foundry plant located in the North of Italy were analyzed in order to determine the amount and kind of wastes produced from the different activities. The main fractions are the molding sands, furnace muds and powders coming from the dust abatement plant, the exhaust lime, the furnace refractory, the metallic shotting and the sludges and powders coming from the dust abatement plant of molding lines for a total production equal to 800 t/d. All wastes were sampled and particle-size and chemically characterized to evaluate the best recycling or reuse solutions. Wastes were sieved and divided in three categories according to the particle-size dimensions: below 0.1 mm, between 0.1 and 0.6 mm and above 0.6 mm. The fraction above 0.6 mm dimension underwent magnetic separation to recover and quantify the potentially available iron fraction. The fraction between 0.1 mm and 0.6 mm was chemically characterized in order to understand if it could be fed to the sand regeneration plant. The below 0.1 mm fraction was characterized to evaluate the following recycling and reuse solutions: additive for molding sands and/or raw material for the concrete industry.

"Gas dispersion properties of sodium salts of 6, 12 and 18-carbon fatty acids (hexanoic, lauric and oleic acid) were investigated as a function of pH. A strong effect of pH was observed on gas dispersion properties of fatty acids. At high pH for 12 and 18 carbon fatty acids, at which these surfactants formed a true solution, the gas dispersion properties were similar to those of MIBC. In the case of sodium hexanoate, which has a much higher solubility than the longer chain fatty acids and therefore does not form precipitates, the gas dispersion properties of this surfactant were strongly enhanced in the acidic pH range, where hexanoic acid was fully associated. This result is an indication that undissociated hexanoic acid is much more surface-active than anionic hexanoate. Only a small effect of the surfactant chain length on gas dispersion properties of the tested reagents was observed. The measured critical coalescence concentration (CCC95) values increase slightly by decreasing chain length and range from 5.8 x 10-5 mol/L (17.7 mg/L) for sodium oleate to 7.2 x 10-5 mol/L (16 mg/L) for sodium laurate at pH 10 and 1.9 x 10-4 mol/L (26 mg/L) for sodium hexanoate at pH 3.7. These are compared to CCC95 of MIBC, which is measured to be 8 x 10-5 mol/L (8 mg/L). The soluble molecular species were recognized as the most effective species in preventing bubble coalescence."

"INTRODUCTIONThe Kidd Creek Concentrator is located 28 kilometers east of the city of Timmins, Ontario. Two types of ore are treated; 'A' type, a copper-zinc-low silver ore producing copper and zinc concentrates, and 'C' type, a copper-lead-zinc-high silver ore producing copper, lead and zinc concentrates.The ore is processed at a combined rate of 12,400 metric tonnes per day through four parallel grinding and flotation divisions. Three divisions treat the 'A' type ore and the fourth treats the 'C' ore. Each division is fed from its own fine ore bin.This paper reviews the grinding section with specific emphasis on grinding media consumption and the factors affecting it as related to 'A' type ore. At Kidd Creek there was an awareness that grinding media consumption varied on a weekly and monthly basis. The reasons for this variation was usually attributed to ore hardness as evidenced by short term variations in the circuit feedrate and head assays. However, there has been a diversity of opinion published in recent years regarding the factors contributing to steel consumption. This initiated a study of historical Kidd Creek operating data, from the period 1970 to 1986 inclusive, to determine the effect of various operating parameters on media consumption. The results of the study could then be used as a baseline for future media consumption testwork."

A site-specific blasting model has been developed for the Asarco Mission mine. The main inputs to the model are the in-situ block size (F80), the post-blast fragmentation (P80) and the intact tensile strength (To). The output from the model is the specific blast energy (ESE). Modern techniques are being used to obtain the input parameters for the site-specific blast fragmentation model. In particular, image processing software is used to obtain both the in-situ block size and the post-blast fragmentation, and the Schmidt hammer is used to obtain the tensile strength at numerous locations throughout the rock mass. An initial model was developed using five test shots in one area of the mine that contains Argillite and is relatively homogeneous. This also included calibrating Schmidt hammer readings against actual Brazilian tensile measurements. The model for Argillite will be updated as more tests are conducted, and the model will be extended to the other four primary rock types at the Asarco Mission mine.

THE first catalogue of Geological Reports of the United States was prepared by Prof. O. C. Marsh, and published in the American Journal of Science and Arts for 1867, vol. xliii, second series. Since then the list has more than doubled, and it was thought that the publication of a new catalogue, brought down to date, would be useful to many of the members of the Institute of Mining Engineers. The compiler will be most thankful to have any omissions or inaccuracies in the list sent to him, to be published as a supplement in the next volume of the Transactions. Especially to have the correct title, number of pages, plates, and maps of any volume on the list to which an * is prefixed, as he has been unable to personally consult such works. A preliminary list was issued last February, which has been almost doubled by the kindness of many friends. A machine that improves safety during the cutting of boxholes (ore-passes) and travelways in underground mining operations has delivered impressive results in trials conducted at a South African platinum mine. The technology is a joint effort by Sandvik Mining and Construction and platinum mining company Lonmin. The ABH 1600 boxhole borer was built by Voest-Alpine Bergtechnik, Sandvik’s Austrian subsidiary. It was delivered to the Lonmin Eastern platinum mine in February 2005. There, it was deployed underground on the Number 8 Level (320 m or 1,050 ft below the surface) at the mine’s Newman incline shaft.

A new generation of hydraulic mine support prestressing devices has been developed. These thin-walled steel shells are machine-welded and can be inflated with water or any liquid to provide prestressing for a wide variety of roof support products ranging from Can supports to props and cable bolts. With an expansion capability of several inches, depending on the geometry and size of the unit, they can also establish roof contact eliminating the need for wooden wedges or crib blocks that are commonly employed with several standing roof support products. Capable of withstanding pressures from 1,000 to 6,000 psi, these cells are able to transfer roof loading into the support structure without rupturing. A recent development has been the addition of an inexpensive yield valve that provides control of the maximum pressure and load development on the support. This paper examines the performance capabilities of these inflatable prestressing units and the impact they have on the performance of various support systems, including an evaluation of the overall stiffness of the support system and the load control during yielding of the prestressing unit. Recommendations are made regarding the design requirements of the prestressing unit to optimize the support performance. A summary of mine applications using this technology is provided with general comments regarding their impact on ground control.

The Cresson gold deposit is in the southcentral portion of the Cripple Creek mining district in central Colorado (Fig. 1). The deposit is hosted by a series of 32 Ma (Kelley, 1995) felsic to mafic, alkaline volcanic rocks that were deposited in a diatremal environment. Mineralization in the Cresson deposit is structurally con-trolled. It occurs as disseminated and vein type. Gold deposition is closely associated with potassium-pyrite metasomatism and quartz-telluride vein development(Pontius, 1992). The Cresson deposit is owned by the Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Co. (CC&V), a joint venture between Pikes Peak Mining (67%) and Golden CycleGold (33%).

"Estimated global solar energy demand in 2001 required approximately 5,500 tons of silicon feedstock. This required 65,000 tons of quartz. If the trend continues, the solar energy demand in 2010 would require approximately 30,000 tons of silicon feedstock and 350,000 tons of quartz, although the need for quartz probably will be lower than this due to higher solar cell efficiencies, larger and thinner wafers, more extensive recycling of waste material and new routes for the production of silicon feedstock. The raw material requirements for the production of metallurgical-grade silicon are most likely to change. This may favour increased beneficiation of primary raw materials in the future solar cell production chain.SOLAR CELL PRODUCTION CHAIN SCENARIOSThe major problem concerning solar cells is the production costs. Electricity produced from fossil fuels and hydropower plants are currently much cheaper than the electricity produced from solar cells. Also, limited availability of silicon feedstock for the production of crystalline silicon solar cells is considered a major threat to the further growth of the PV industry. The present route for solar silicon feedstock goes from quartz, through metallurgical-grade silicon (MG-Si) and to electronic-grade silicon (EG-Si). The reject from the EG-Si production are further processed into wafers and solar cells. This situation is not satisfying, however, because it has created a silicon feedstock shortage and a PV energy price that is not competitive in a large scale.Crystalline silicon solar cells are the most important solar cells manufactured today. This will most probably remain the situation the next decade. Also, the future silicon ""feedstock"" is most likely not reject from the production of electronic-grade silicon, as it is today. There will probably be a more direct solargrade silicon route, excluding the very expensive electronic-grade silicon ""detour"". Quartzite has been regarded as the most suitable primary raw material used in the silicon solar cell production chain. This may change as the raw material requirements for the production of metallurgical-grade silicon are most likely to change. In addition, quartz or other silica-containing minerals from other rocks may be of a higher purity or contain lesser amounts of the most harmful elements. This favours increased beneficiation of primary raw materials in the future solar silicon feedstock production chain"

Bioleaching of nickel laterite ores is based on the use of heterotrophic fungi organisms and their metabolites (organic acids) to dissolve nickel and cobalt from oxide minerals to form metal-organic complexes. Metal recovery from this process using an aminophosphonic acid based chelating resin (Purolite S950) was investigated as a function of metal concentrations, complexing agent including citric, dL-malic and lactic acids. Batch adsorptions were conducted using synthetic leachate solutions of nickel and cobalt with concentrations from 15 to 2000 mg/L prepared in 0.01 and 0.1 M organic acids. Adsorption equilibrium data were interpreted using the Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Kagner-Radushkevich (DKR) models. The results showed that equilibrium adsorption data for nickel-organic complexes followed the Freundlich model and those for cobalt agreed with the Langmuir model. It was observed that the maximum adsorption capacities of nickel and cobalt were 3.26 and 10.48 mg/g resins respectively. These were achieved in metal complexes prepared from 0.01 M lactic acid. Metal elution was conducted using 2 M nitric acid. High metal recoveries were achieved from low metal concentrations but were found to decrease with increasing metal concentration. The results suggest that effective recovery of nickel and cobalt from low concentration of metals, such as those generated from bioleaching operations, can be achieved suitably using chelating resins.

The Louvicourt Mine is located 600 km north of Montreal in the province of Quebec, Canada. The owners are Aur Resources Inc (30 per cent), mine operator, Novicourt Inc (45 per cent) and Teck Corporation (25 per cent). It is an underground mechanised operation with a total work of 290 employees. Since 1994, the mine production is 11 120 456 tonnes at 3.60 per cent Cu, 1.51 per cent Zn, 26.07 g/mt Ag and 0.96 g/mt Au. At a rate of 4300 tonnes per day 365 days per year. Louvicourt Mine is a copper operation since 80 per cent of our revenue is from copper. The mining method is transverse blasthole stoping, mining primary and secondary stopes. The stope dimension is 15 m wide by 30 m high and 10 m to 80 m long for primary stopes. The secondary stopes are limited at 25 m long. Close to 100 000 metres of production drilling per year is required for 115 mm and 165 mm diameter holes. Backfilling is done with pastefill from the start of the operation in 1994. The binder ratio is 4.5 per cent in primary and two per cent in secondary stopes (80 per cent slag and 20 per cent cement). Development requirement to maintain production was 5000 m from 1996, 1997, 1998, 4200 in year 1999, 3200 m in year 2000 and an average of 2500 m in 2001 and 2002. Typical 6.0 m + 4.3 m, 4.9 m + 4.6 m and 4.5 m + 4.6 m headings. In addition more than 1500 metres of development will be excavated in/under paste backfill before 2004. A total of 60 mobile units are required among which for lateral development (three two boom electric hydraulic jumbos û AC Boomer 322, four electric hydraulic roofbolters û Maclean MEM-928 and AC Boltec PL350 and two anfo loader truck û Dux) and for production (four ITH drills û MTI, one electric hydraulic longhole drill û AC Simba H1357, eight LHD û AC-Wagner ST8-B, 1 LHD ST-1000 and two haulage 30 tons trucks û Dux. The 1 January 2002 reserves are 4.1 M tonnes grading 3.1 per cent Cu and 1.9 per cent Zn at an NSR (Net Smelter Revenue) of $US 53. The operating mining costs were at an average of $US 23 from 1996 to year 2000 and $US 25 in 2001. The operating costs ranged from a low of $US 0.41 per pound of copper in 1999 to a high of $US 0.49 per pound of copper in 1998.

Timber support of mine openings continues to be an effective system for ground support, due to its avail¬ability, flexibility, and ease of installation. Timber support of mine openings as a primary method to support loose rock has been replaced to a large extent by rockbolting and by filling systems. How¬ever, the many designs of square-set timber and varia¬tions of crib and stull support that have been developed to suit many stope configurations have proven reliable over many years of application. Integrated in modern excavation and stoping methods, timber remains an im¬portant ground support material for today's mines. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TIMBER SYSTEMS Timber, when used as a part of the total support system, is recognized for its unique support properties. More than a cover to prevent minor falls of ground, timber systems have been carefully designed to provide adequate support with sufficient compressive qualities to achieve a safe working environment in extremely diffi¬cult ground conditions. In some cases, a timber support method is designed to yield while retaining its protec¬tive support qualities. Little or no initial investment in equipment or plant is required for incorporating timber into the mining support system. Low cost cutoff saws and portable chain saws are sufficient equipment for effective use of dimen¬sioned (sawed) or round (stull) timber support. Until recently, small sawmills of various complexity were com¬mon at mine surface plants. Sawmills at the mine sites have generally been replaced by timber vendors' mills. Suppliers have been able to use efficient cutting and lumber handling methods to reduce the cost of mine timbers. Most suppliers will package dimensioned mine timber into bundles that are suitable for handling down mine shafts and on level conveyances. The principal disadvantage of timber as a support method is higher material cost and labor cost associated with its labor-intensive installation. Furthermore, stand¬ing timber reserves of mine quality wood are in short supply in some areas, and heavy competition exists for alternative uses of the timber supplies. Vendors are reluctant to supply large cross section dimension tim¬bers relatively free of defects. Some mine operations require 4.8-m (16-ft) lengths of firm timber over 0.09 m2 (144 sq in.) in section and these are difficult to obtain in large quantities. APPLICATION OF TIMBER FOR MINE SUPPORTS Timber used in mine support has been cut from many species of trees. A firm hardwood with physical properties similar to western Douglas fir has been pre¬ferred in the US. Other harder and softer woods, how¬ever, have been used when readily available or where the specific strength or crushing quality of the wood is a desired specification of the support system design. Hard¬ wood, commonly oak, has been used where maximum crushing resistance is required. Mahogany and fir are widely used for shaft guide timber. Normally, timber is used with its core axis parallel to the long axis of the timber dimension. However, in some cases, it is placed normal to its core in a "butt" log position, so as to provide maximum resistance to abrasion of the ore passage adjacent to the cut end of the block. By selective placement of timber block¬ing, controlled resistance to ground closure can be achieved which will prevent early failure of primary sup¬port members of the timber structure. Timber is widely used in modern mining operations as a construction member for chute-lip support. These designs are tailored to each operation to conform to the dimensions of the haulage equipment being used. As a construction material, wood requires none of the spe¬cial equipment necessary for placement of concrete or steel support. Placement of these alternate support ma¬terials requires carefully dimensioned and engineered excavation for their installation. Wood can be easily sawed to fit on location. The successful use of timber in heavy ground de¬pends on the careful and accurate placement of block¬ing and bracing to achieve the controlled yielding re¬sistance needed to support the mine opening. Similarly, frequency, size, and placement of top and bottom block¬ing stulls in flat-bedded deposits are carefully determined to provide adequate support at the mining face. Con¬trolled caving through failure of the stulls may be required as the scope retreats from the earlier mined-out sections. The support program must achieve both of these dimensionless qualities by specification of stull frequency and size. The utility of the square set-system of ground sup¬port and timber support is described in Chap. 2, re¬printed from US Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6691. Four examples of effective use of timber for support of stoping and other mine openings are pre¬sented in other chapters in this section. The Gilman mine's use of Mitchell slice stoping described in Chap. 3 is an early modification of the square-set mining system. This application proved reli¬able for heavy ground and overcame some of the dis¬advantages of conventional square-set timber. Chap. 4 describes the Burgin mine's use of timber with other reinforcement material. This combination of materials achieved high strength and control with yielding com¬ponent members necessary for heavy, squeezing ground. Chap. 5 describes the Bunker Hill mine's use of square¬set timber in a new configuration that provides an effi¬cient and safe support for stoping using small load¬haul-dump (LHD) mobile equipment. I n the simplest application of a shock tube initiation system, the tubing acts as a “relay line” which passes a detonation signal from borehole to borehole. When the signal arrives at each borehole, it causes the detonator attached to it to fire. Such a single path constitutes a progressive series where each unit must function properly in order to activate the following units. Any application error, malfunction, or mistake in connecting any surface unit will stop the progression of the detonation signal through the system and result in a “cutoff” or misfire of the following charges.

Blasthole deviation is a frequent, well documented and undesirable occurrence in mining operations. It is caused by the drill string mechanics, operating variables and the interaction between the drill bit and the rock mass characteristics. It is composed of three distinct components: collaring or marking error, alignment error and trajectory deviation. This study has focussed on the dependence of trajectory or natural deviation on the geological features of the rock mass being drilled.

"The froth flotation process is not well understood. Both flotation models, and the parameters used to describe the stream flows are not well defined. They in fact vary considerably in different applications. This creates difficulties is designing a simulation program suitable for use by plant personnel, consultants, and researchers. In addition to simulation, an effective simulation program can be expected to provide a range of other services.This paper shows how a process circuit simulator can be designed with sufficient flexibility to satisfy these needs, and discusses some of the additional services.OVERVIEWThe development of a simulation program for froth flotation circuits faces several challenges as flotation models and the associated stream descriptions are not well defined. There is little agreement on the best form for a flotation model, or on how the plant streams should be defined.In addition to simulation, a flotation simulator is generally expected to provide other services such as data input, data reconciliation, model fitting, and accuracy estimation. Additional services may also be needed beyond what might initially be envisaged. A summary of some of these possibilities is included.To apply simulation to a flotation circuit it is necessary to develop a flotation cell model, for instance based on the general outline given in the appendices. Experimental data, usually from the plant, is needed to determine cell model parameters. This is generally done by first undertaking data reconciliation to determine if mass flow constraints are sufficiently closely satisfied. At the same time the data is inspected for outliers that might bias subsequent calculations. Next the data is fitted to a model to back calculate ore characteristics. If there is sufficient agreement between the fitted model and the data, the model can then used to make predictions of the effect of changes to the plant. The changes, that the simulation shows are beneficial, can be applied to improve plant performance"

"Upon successful completion of the AG/SAG Mill project (Cooper et al., 2001) the Brunswick Mine concentrator was configured with single line processing through the AG/SAG mill, followed by two parallel ball mill and flotation circuits. The Stage Grinding project was undertaken to utilize a pre-flotation stage on the AG/SAG mill primary cyclone overflow and simplify the flowsheet by consolidating the two ball mill and flotation circuits, resulting in single line processing fi-om AG/SAG mill to final concentrate. Concurrently, the reclaim water supply capacity was increased to enable flotation cleaning at lower percent solids.Benefits from the Stage Grinding project include revenue enhancement from increased zinc grade and recovery combined with additional lead recovery. Further benefits included a reduction in the number of process pumps, reduction in loss associated with spillage to sumps and process simplification through efficient use of equipment layout.The Stage Grinding project was implemented in six phases over a period of seven months in 2000. Each phase was commissioned during scheduled concentrator shopdays with minimal additional downtime required. One year after project approval the Stage Grinding project was completed at a total cost of $1 1.8 million.INTRODUCTIONThe Noranda Inc. Brunswick Mine, located near Bathurst, New Brunswick, is one of the world’s largest leadzinc mines. Milling of ore began in 1964 from the No. 12 orebody, with an expansion in 1966 to accommodate ore fkom the No. 6 open pit located several kilometers away. In 1980 the pit was exhausted and the concentrator rationalized to accept a design feed rate of 10,500 tomes per day from the No. 12 mine. In excess of 100 million tomes have been milled to date, representing over three-quarters of the known reserve. The concentrator employs differential froth flotation to produce lead, zinc, copper and leauzinc bulk concentrates. The ore is massive sulphide, with approximately 20% valuable minerals, 60% pyrite and 20% silicates."

"The triboelectric charge attributes of some silicate minerals (i.e., feldspar, quartz and wollastonite) after contacting different triboecharging medium made of different materials were studied. The charge acquisitions by different size fractions of minerals were monitored and accordingly the energetic work function values, i.e., the main parameter determining the entity of triboelectric charges acquired by mineral grains, of the examined minerals were estimated. Moreover the separation behavior of different size fractions of these minerals through the electric field of a laboratory free-falling separator when the mineral grains are charged by different tribochargers were observed and considered as the electrical separation potential of the examined minerals.Furthermore, the role of adsorption of different chemical species on triboelectric charge characteristics and charge acquisition of mineral samples were described from theoretical point of view and the effects of some chemical reagents on triboelectric charge acquisition of the examined minerals were studied. In addition the separation behavior of chemically conditioned quartz, feldspar and wollastonite minerals, using different anionic and cationic reagents, through the electric field of a free-fall electrostatic separator before and after chemical conditioning were monitored.Finally an attempt was made to translate the findings from single mineral systems to a complex silicate ore, containing mainly of feldspars, quartz, and wollastonite. Different separation tests under various conditions were conducted to this complex silicate ore. Before passing through the separation device, the ore sample was conditioned by different cationic and anionic reagents and then was triboelectricaly charged by different tribocharging medium in order to find the effective reagent and tribocharging medium for separating silicates. Besides the role of temperature and humidity of the surrounding ambient in separation behavior were considered."

J BERESFORD introduced the subject of the paper which is the use of polymeric slurries to support the sides of diaphragm wall and bored pile excavations during construction. In the opinion of the authors the use of a suitable polymeric fluid offers financial and technical advantages compared with traditional bentonite based slurries. Under quiescent conditions a support slurry must have the following properties. - sufficient viscosity to support the sides of the excavation, to prevent infiltration into soils and to hold loose soil particles in suspension. - when agitated it should thin quickly to assist pumping transfer and cleaning and allow free passage of the grab or drill. - viscosity should be low enough during concreting to facilitate placement but high enough to prevent contamination of the concrete.
