A computer-oriented systems simulator (CMHS) has been developed for analysis of continuous materials handling systems. Special emphasis has been placed in the model on several features that are unique to these systems. These features include periodic pattern of material arrival from several sources, several types of material to he transferred, material dispatch processes, intermediate storage capacities, and multiple material destinations. Both the deterministic factors of the continuous material handling system, such as the physical decomposition of the system and the scheme and schedule of its operation, and the stochastic factors, such as variations of material arrival, material pattern on the conveyor, and availabilities of the system elements, are considered in the simulator. The application, of the model is demonstrated through a study of an underground conveyor belt network serving long- wall and continuous miner sections.

The value realised by an open pit mine depends on the quality and integrity of the mine planning process as well as the level of execution against these mine plans. When managing the execution against the mine plan, how well the mine plan is executed spatially, is of critical importance. The short-term mine plan is the plan that is physically executed on most open pit mines. At the same time, the spatial mine-to-plan compliance is typically reconciled against the annual business plan. Short-term mine planning, therefore, plays an important role in the effectiveness of the spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation process by providing operational teams with detailed designs and schedules, while ensuring that mining execution is spatially aligned with the business plan. The Sishen open pit iron ore mine (Sishen) strives to continuously improve spatial compliance to the business plan. Sishen enhanced the role that short-term mine planning plays in enabling the forward-looking component of the spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation process. The enhanced short-term mine planning process focuses on detailed tactical sequence designs per mining pushback, the health of value chain buffers, spatial plan-to-plan reconciliation, and the associated management routines. This led to improved spatial mine-to-plan compliance to the business plan from 71% to 94% over the four-year period from 2020 to 2023 inclusive. These results indicate that the application of short-term mine planning as part of an integrated spatial mine-to-plan compliance process at open pit mines can contribute positively to improving the level of spatial execution against the business plan. This paper presents the enhancements made to the short-term mine planning process, which other open pit mining operations can consider to improve spatial mine-to-plan compliance.

DISPERSION hardening as an alloying process has aroused increasing interest in the past few years. This alloying procedure, in which an insoluble phase is dispersed randomly through a metal or alloy, is believed to be especially suited for the attainment of creep strength at elevated temperatures since the dispersed phase is metallurgically stable. Another advantage is that the physical properties of the matrix phase, such as electrical conductivity, remain relatively unaffected by alloying. These two characteristics resulted in interest in the applicability of dispersion hardening to copper and copper alloys. A study of copper alloys prepared by powder metallurgy methods has shown some strengthening from oxide dispersions.' However, powder metallurgy processing would not be economical for large scale production of dispersion hardened copper-base alloys. Therefore, the research described in this article was initiated to examine methods of forming dispersion alloys which would not require powder metallurgy processing. If powder metallurgy processing is to be avoided, a method must be found by which the dispersion material can be introduced into and dispersed through the melt before casting. When the dispersed phase is an oxide or similar nonmetallic, it is extremely difficult to form a satisfactory liquid: solid dispersion since successful mixing requires that the melt wet the dispersed phase. It is almost impossible to force a nonwetted particle beneath the melt surface. This difficulty can be avoided, however, if the oxide particles are produced in molten copper by reaction within the melt. The problem would then reduce to maintaining randomness until solidification. Four procedures were considered for producing an oxide particle within molten copper by reaction. In all cases, the intent was to react oxygen (0) with a reactive metal (X) to form an oxide (XO) within the copper melt. These reactions were as follows: 1) (Cu-X), + (O)g (Cu)1 + (XO)S [1] 2) (Cu-X)1 + (Cu2O)s (Cu)x + (XO)S [2] 3) (Cu-OK)1 + (Cu-X)1 (Cu)1+(XO)9 [3] 4) (Cu-OK)1 +(X)s (Cu)1 +(XO)s [4] The reactions were carried out in an 8-lb melt of 99.98 pct Cu maintained in the vicinity of 2200oF by induction heating. Where possible the amount of the reactants was controlled to give 1 to 5 vol pct oxide. Mechanical stirring during the reaction period was used to minimize agglomeration of the reaction product. The presence of a reaction product was determined metallographically by study of an ingot cast from the melt at the end of the reaction period. Reaction [I] was studied by dissolving aluminum in the melt followed by forcing oxygen through the melt. The melts became quite sluggish during the reaction period suggesting that A12O3 was formed. However, the reaction product rose out of the melt rapidly, possibly due to the flushing action of the oxygen stream, and little dispersed phase was formed. Reaction [2] was examined by dissolving aluminum, silicon, or nickel i; the melt and then adding Cu20 (melting point 2250F). This procedure was unsuccessful. "Confocal fluorescence scanning laser microscope was applied to characterize the surface flaw of ceramics in great detail. A high potential -of the characterization technique is presented first. Then the technique was applied to clarify the relationship between the flexural strength of ceramics and the surface flaw. This kind of direct information of surface flaw should be essential for the fundamental study in this area, but has been lacking. The examination revealed that large defects are present on the machined surface of ceramics. Their size is consistent to the flexural strength measured on the material. The characterization tool was also applied to examine the formation of surface flaw in machining of ceramics.IntroductionClarification of fracture origin should be the starting point in the study on strength in ceramics. However, this task has been extremely difficult in some ceramics, such as an alumina ceramics. It may break from both internal and surface flaws. The former should reflect the quality of production process and the latter the machining. Examination of surface flaws should be very important for developing a better machining method for ceramics. The knowledge may valuable for establishing a better production process also.ExperimentAlumina Referceram (JFCC) was used as samples. They are cut to size of 3x4x40mm, and the surfaces were ground to meet the requirements of testing method for flexural strength of fine ceramics, JIS R 1601. They were soaked in an aqueous solution of fluorescence dye and evacuated with an aspirator for an hour to allow the solution penetrate into surface flaws. After excessive solution remained on the surface was removed by gentle washing, the specimens were dried at 120°C for 48 hours. The 4 point bending mode was applied to measure the fracture strength."

To meet a growing need for thorium metal of high purity and amenability to fabrication, the Bureau of Mines devised a method for preparing thorium metal by the reduction of thorium tetrachloride. Thorium tetrachloride was prepared by chlorinating calcined thorium oxalate with carbon tetrachloride. The crude thorium tetrachloride, containing oxygen-bearing compounds, was purified by a double vacuum distillation at 800 to 900° C., and thorium metal was made in the form of a dense sponge by the reaction of metallic sodium or magnesium with thorium tetrachloride at 800° C. Vacuum arc melting was used to consolidate the sponge metal to ingot form for evaluation of its physical and chemical properties.

Summary During Palaeozoic time, there were deposited in the Canadian Rockies four beds of phosphate rock, ranging in age from Mississippian to Jurassic. Two of these beds are of probable economic importance if some means of separating the phosphate from the gangue can be devised. All the more important beds of phosphate rock so far discovered are just behind the front ranges of the Rocky mountains, within fifty miles of the prairie lands of Alberta. Mining conditions are favourable, with an abundance of timber and ample power available. The phosphate beds are all of the sedimentary type, and they all occur, apparently, at the same stratigraphic horizons over a wide area. The conditions necessary for deposition evidently occurred at several different periods in geological time, and were widespread. The most important factor appears to have been the condition of the land surface surrounding the basin of de-position. Both oolitic and nodular phosphate were laid down under nearly similar conditions. Introduction Following the discovery of phosphate rock in Idaho and Montana, search was commenced in Canada to determine whether formations of similar age in the Canadian Rockies carried similar beds of phosphate. The most widespread search has been that undertaken by the mines department of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada. The following paper will discuss some of the results of this exploration.

The copper smelting industry has transitioned into the 21st century compliant with environmental regulations, new smelter installations and brown field expansions. The industry faces new challenges as copper in concentrate grades have decreased while contained impurities have increased. A new benchmarking survey was undertaken to update the last survey of 2016 for operating copper smelters in the world. The information collected was separated based on primary smelting technology rather than by geographical location and supplemented from published literature. Each smelting technology’s unique use of specialized process equipment, concentrate smelting capacity, and impurity flexibility are discussed INTRODUCTION The 20th century was a remarkable time for the growth of copper smelting. Electric, blast and reverberator furnaces dominated the smelting technology well past WWII. In the 1970s, SO2 regulations and high energy cost drove the development of new primary smelting technology. Technological advancements decreased energy consumption and enriched sulfur dioxide concentrations of the process off-gas to levels where sulfur capture in sulfuric acid plants was economically viable. The new smelting technologies began to replace reverberatory and electric furnaces starting in the late 1940s. A new paradigm in copper smelting was established and the enabler was then Outkumpu’s® flash smelting technology from the 1940s through to today. Now, Outotec had become the dominant primary smelting technology with over 44 copper flash smelting furnace installations world-wide. Figure 1 shows the historical installation statistics of primary smelting technologies over the last 70 years (ICSG 2018). The dominance and acceptance of the Outotec® smelting technology from the 1940s to current can be seen. Isasmelt® technology for copper was introduced in the 1970s and did not see advancement in new installations until the 1990s through today. Isasmelt® has 12 world-wide copper furnace installations to date. Mitsubishi® also introduced continuous smelting and converting technology in the 1970s, but had no new installations until the 1990s with a total of 5 copper smelters. Outotec Ausmelt® smelting technology had 3 installations in the 1990s and totals 10 furnaces. Most recently the Chinese technology of Bottom Blown and Submerged Lance Smelting began commercial operations in 2005 for total installations of 11, mostly in China. Other technologies, such as, El Teniente, Noranda, Inco, and Vanyukov furnaces have contributed to the overall global smelting capacity, but have not penetrated the smelting industry to challenge the existing dominant smelting technologies. The technology distribution in Figure 1 also shows flash smelting technology for sulfide concentrate domination untill 2000, bottom blow technology has become the preference in China. Currently, China is the only country building new smelting capacity. Isasmelt® technology also seen a large increase in installations in the current decade.

The 1.1 Ga Midcontinent rift of North America has many similarities to the geology of the Voisey's Bay region in Labrador and the geology of the Noril'sk region in Siberia. These similarities include the hosting of large volumes of sulfur- undersaturated and trace-element-enriched basalt, having igneous centers characterized by crustal contamination, being characterized by metal depletions in some mafic units (an indication of prior sulfide segregation) and having known occurrences of Ni-Cu sulfide mineralization. These similarities along with new geophysical data and refined models for Ni-Cu sulfide deposits suggest that the Midcontinent rift probably contains undiscovered Cu-Ni [±] PGE sulfide deposits, some of which could be the size and grade of a Voisey's Bay or Noril'sk deposit. In particular, intrusions and related feeder systems that occur in northern Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as to the southwest along the rift margin, deserve serious examination.

"The Bidgood is a small gold mine about 5 miles east of the main Kirkland Lake camp. Since the beginning of production in 1934, gold having a value of $5,000,000 has been produced from the property. Practically all of this production has come from seven veins in a diorite stock that intrudes the Timiskaming sediments and lavas of the area. The veins consist of quartz, pyrite, and molybdenite with minor amounts of chalcopyrite, calcite, and tellurides, and occupy northeast striking and northwest dipping thrust fault fractures. They have no apparent direct structural association with the faults of the main Kirkland Lake camp or the Larder Lake 'break' to the south; however, the veins closely resemble the former in their mineralogical composition and in their close association with syenite intrusives.ROCK TYPES AND THEIR STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICSThe dominant and, from an economic standpoint, most important rocks in the ore area consist of two separate families of Algoman intrusivesa diorite and a later syenite group."

Selected characteristics of nonmetallic phases were determined in low-carbon sheet steels which had been produced by various refining; deoxidizing, and casting procedures. The results showed little influence of the refining process on the quantity, distribution, size, and character of the nonmetallic phases. The quantity of inclusions was governed by the deoxidation procedures. While the mode of casting influenced the internal structure and the pattern of inclusion distribution, it had little effect on the quantity of nonmetallics. The vast majority of inclusions were under 30 µ in diam, and there was little change in size distribution during hot and cold rolling. The composition and structure of the inclusions were expained an the basis of known equilibrium phase diagrams for the appropriate systems. Additional work is needed to explain some of the observations of this paper. HENRY Marion Howe's contributions to the metallurgical profession include his many writings, the wisdom that he imparted to his students, and the inspiration that he gave to the many scholars, teachers, and industrialists who knew him personally. It was Professor Howe's intimate colleague, Albert Sauveur,1 who, in the first Howe Memorial Lecture, could have been speaking for the metallurgist of our generation as well as his own when he wrote, "...how many of us on the point of going astray were called back to the right path by Howe's guiding torch?" More than a quarter of a century later, Francis Foley,2 one of the last in the Howe Lecture series who worked directly with the great man, delivered the ultimate tribute, "...truth, in its time is so hard to identify." While Professor Howe strove to be right, "he was content if he provoked the reader to take the next step along the path to greater knowledge." Like so many of my predecessors, I sought guidance for this lecture by referring to Professor Howe's two classic texts, Metallurgy of steel,3 and Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron: the former book interpreting the facts as he saw them near the start of his career, and the latter—published 26 years later—pointing to many fertile fields for metallurgical investigation. Those of us who harvest the fruits of Henry Marion Howe's contributions to the metallurgical profession now look with wonder at the tremendous legacy he has provided. It is rewarding to study his writings and to recognize the anticipation of such aspects of modern ferrous metallurgy as: 1) Direct reduction 2) Steelmaking reactions 3) The approaches and benefits of degassing 4) Solidification mechanisms 5) Habits and behavior of nonmetallic inclusions 6) Recrystallization phenomena 7) Slip and slip propagation 8) Dislocations 9) Discontinuous deformation 10) Microscopic and macroscopic segregation

O Projeto 4ª Pelotização surgiu com o propósito de aumentar a capacidade de produção de pelotas da Samarco em 37%, por meio da implantação do 3º Mineroduto, com capacidade de 20 Mt/ano, a 4ª Usina de Pelotização com capacidade de 8,25 Mt/ano e o 3º Concentrador com capacidade de 9,5Mt/ano. O projeto proposto visa estruturar o processo de Manutenção do Concentrador 3 através do sistema de gestão de dados utilizado pela Samarco Mineração, o software SAP, com foco na criação de um modelo taxonômico de níveis hierárquicos contendo informações técnicas dos novos equipamentos e respectivos sobressalentes, dando base para definição de uma política de estoque, a implementação de planos de manutenção e estudos de confiabilidade. Objetiva a redução do Risco Operacional, consolidando no sistema os processos que compõem a função manutenção, referente à terceira Usina de Beneficiamento de Minério de Ferro da Samarco Mineração. Para isto, foi utilizada a metodologia Kaizen para estruturação e desenvolvimento do trabalho e estabelecimento de metas para controle das informações. Verificou-se uma grande demanda de avaliação de criticidade e cadastro dos equipamentos e sobressalentes, além disto, a falta de organização das informações de forma estruturada poderia acarretar dificuldades de se analisar itens faltantes. Foi necessário também o estabelecimento de critérios para implementação de planos de manutenção visando à preservação da integridade e funcionalidade dos equipamentos.

This paper describes the design, equipment selection and onshore fabrication of the largest facilities module ever installed in a single lift in the Gulf of Mexico. Measuring 35.5 x 70.1 x 21.3 m (110 x 230 x 70 ft), the three operating level structure houses Frasch process sulfur mining equipment and weighed nearly 49 million N (5500 tons) during lift. An operating weight of over 74 million N (8300 st) combines with bridge reactions acting on the in-place module and results in a total operating vertical load on the supporting platform deck of about 107 million N (12,000 tons). A Vierendeel truss structural system was selected for framing the module to allow maximum equipment access and routing flexibility for complex, insulated large diameter process piping. Research and finite element analysis of crimp plate siding behavior in shear was carried out during selection of siding type for the module. An interactive design sequence was carried out that incorporated in-place operational criteria, onshore fabrication considerations, complex process equipment requirements, plus load-out, ocean transport and offshore lift analyses. Project schedule dictated that design, procurement and fabrication be fast-tracked with parallel activities accelerated to the maximum extent possible. Design and construction of this largest and most complex module was done concurrently with 52 other components of the project including jackets, decks, process and living quarters modules as well as two 122 x 22 m (400 x 72 ft) sulfur tankers. Total tonnage of steel structures for the project exceeded 90.7 kt (100,000 st). The 5 kt (5500 st) mining module proved the viability and costeffectiveness of larger modules than commonly used in Gulf of Mexico waters. This technical advance can be matched with economic opportunity for other large-scale offshore installations.

"In response to needs created by intensive exploration and accelerating expansion of coal mining in the Western provinces, Canadian R & D on coal is progressively widening its scope. Principal interests continue to lie in coal geology, preparation and processing, carbonization, combustion and transportation, but much active work is also in progress with respect to mine environments, mined-land reclamation, and environmental consequences of coal mining, processing and use. Long-range 'basic' research, which characterized much of the R & D pattern in the fifties and early sixties and which was often no more than an attempt to prevent total extinction of a dying industry, has been somewhat de-emphasized, except insofar as it relates to 'safe' coal storage and to coal-based carbons (which are beginning to command attention as pollution control media).In this review, recent exploration, mine development and new preparation facilities are noted, and current R & D in transportation, processing, handling, carbonization and combustion is summarized. Reference is also made to investigations bearing on non-fuel uses of coal (notably as source-materials for carbons and agrobiological products)."

"Ilmenite smelting involves partial reduction of iron oxide from a slag consisting mainly of T1O2, T12O3 and FeO, yielding as products iron (with approximately 2% carbon) and titanium slag. Slag purity requirements preclude any fluxing additions, and the aggressive nature of the slag necessitates a furnace freeze lining. Large departures from thermal and chemical equilibrium hold in the smelter, with possible implications for process stability. The slag is approximately 150K. hotter than the metal, which means that the metal temperature is below the slag melting point; this difference in temperature has been shown to lead to formation of a solid TisOs-rich layer between the slag and metal. Recent equilibrium measurements have confirmed that the slag and metal are not in chemical equilibrium either, with significantly more reducing conditions in the metal than in the slag. After solidification, the pseudobrookite slag structure is metastable below approximately 1400K, and may transform upon slight oxidation.IntroductionThe natural mineral ilmenite is the main source of titanium, which is mainly used to produce Ti02-based pigments. Ilmenite has the ideal formula FeTiC>3, but natural minerals can be partially oxidized (to contain some Fe3+), and typically contain MnO and MgO as well, together with associated silicate minerals. Smelting is one of the methods to upgrade ilmenite for subsequent T1O2 pigment production; smelting involves partial reduction of FeO to form metallic iron as a byproduct and titanium slag as the main product. Reduction is typically controlled to yield a slag which contains around 10% FeO, 85% (Ti02+Tij03) and 5% impurity oxides (mainly MnO, AI2O3 and S1O2). An example of a typical average slag composition from reduction of South African ilmenite is shown in Table I. As this indicates, a significant side reaction is reduction of some T1O2 to T12O3. The relative extents of reduction of FeO to Fe and of Ti02 to T12O3 are such that the slag stoichiometry is close to that of the pseudobrookite phase [1]. Pseudobrookite has the structure AB2O5 (where ""A"" and ""B"" are different cation sites); the phase which makes up the bulk of solidified titanium slag has the AB2O5 structure and stoichiometry [2], and can be viewed as a solid solution of FeTi20s, T13O5, ÌçÔÀ2è5, MgTi20s, AI2T1O5 and C^TiOs [1]. This solid-solution phase is referred to as ""pseudobrookite"" or ""M3O5"" in this paper."

"Bell Copper is situated (Latitude 55°0''N, Longitude 126°14W) on Newman Peninsula on the east side of Babine Lake at an altitude of 2,450 feet above sea level. The mine site is approximately 170 miles north west of Prince George and 40 miles east of Smithers. Access to the property is by way of 30 miles of paved road to the Village of Granisle on the west shore of Babine Lake and then a further 9 miles of unpaved road to Bell Copper's west dock. The two mile lake crossing is made using a tug and barge. A compressed air bubbler system maintains an ice free channel for the barge during the winter months.Temperatures range from summer maximums of around 32 °C to winter minimums in the region of minus 40°C. Long periods in winter may be spent with temperatures in the range of minus 15""C to minus 28°C. Freezing temperatures usually start in October and last for six months. The lake normally freezes over in mid December and the ice breaks up in mid May. Snow accounts for approximately two t11irds of the annual precipitation of twenty-one inches."

The primary objective of most comminution operations is liberation; however, mill performance is generally quantified in terms of particle size. Only recently has the use of image analysis equipment made it possible to quantify mill performance on the basis of liberation. In this investigation, a series of tests were carried out to study the effect of mill operating parameters on the liberation of sphalerite from a sphalerite/dolomite ore. The parameters studied included mill rotational speed, mill loading and ball size. The results of this work appear to indicate that sphalerite liberation is improved under conditions that promote impact breakage, while dolomite breakage is enhanced under attrition conditions.

The bad effects of arsenic in commercial copper are well-known to metallurgists. The refining of copper by electrolysis eliminates practically all of the arsenic, provided certain requirements are fulfilled. The first, and most important, of these requirements is, that the voltage of the depositing current shall not be too high. It has been known for some time that the percentage of arsenic in the deposited copper increases with the voltage. To investigate the relation between the electro-motive force (e.m.f.) and the freedom of the precipitated copper from arsenic, the experiments were made, of which a brief summary is here given: I made three copper-arsenic alloys, containing respectively 3.56, 2.24 and 0.96 per cent. of arsenic. Along the south-west coast of Taiwan is about 550,000 metric tons of heavy sand deposit containing about 10 % black monazite. The Institute has developed a separation process to recover the individual rare earths and the developed process has been commercialized by a local private company. The decomposition of the local black monazite by sodium hydroxide through hydrothermal and fusion methods has been investigated. In the hydrothermal process 4.5 wt. % of aqueous alkali solution was used in an autoclave. In the fusion process, caustic soda (9.8% NaOH) was employed in am open cylindrical reactor. The same product of hydrous rare earth oxides were obtained and then dissolved by hydrochloric acid and the p-H adjusted in order to separate the thorium from the rare earths. After filtration, the filtrate contained rare earth chloride and the cake contained mainly the silica and thorium hydroxide. Both methods give a yield of 90 % with respect to the rare earths recovery. A detailed description of operation and comparison of the two methods are given.
