The Captain mine came into being under the following circumstances: 1) Commonwealth Edison had need for fuel for the generation of electricity in their Chicago service area. 2) Southwestern Illinois Coal Corp. had an ample supply of coal in the Illinois No. 6 and No. 5 seams. 3) The Gulf, Mobile & Ohio R.R. had a one-line transportation system with the capability of transporting coal from the Captain mine to Commonwealth Edison. These fortuitous conditions permitted an effective three-way partner- ship to develop. Commonwealth Edison had built a new generating station at Joliet, Ill., across the Illinois River from the existing station, to supplement their power-generating capacity for the Chicago area (Fig. 1). The annual requirement of the Joliet station is approximately 4.5 million tons of coal. From large reserves of coal in the No. 6 and No. 5 seams, Southwestern Illinois Coal Corp. contracted to supply Commonwealth Edison with approximately 6 million tons annually from its Captain mine. The logical carrier was Gulf, Mobile & Ohio, whose mainline travels through this coal field and also passes by the Joliet station on its way to Chicago. This railroad has been moving Southwestern's coal from the Streamline mine for more than 30 years. The basic ingredients of timing, scheduling, moving, and handling were adopted by the three parties, the precise details being worked out jointly. To do this, each group had to know its requirements exactly. The initial schedule was drawn up and tentatively approved, with each party taking a hard look at its own requirements and commitments to make certain that the schedule could be met on a normal daily basis. With only minor changes, the final schedule was adopted, each participant feeling that it had a sufficient factor of safety to maintain steady operation. THE years 1914-15-16 were a pioneering period in mining, milling, and copper metallurgy generally. It was uncertain just what path the crushing, grinding, and concentrating processes would take. This situation was quite embarrassing to the directors of some of our large porphyry properties, then being equipped for production. Inspiration had already made several designs for its proposed 15,000-ton concentrator, incorporating in them the latest devices developed in the art of gravity concentration, only to have the work vitiated by the rapid march of events. In a little improvised plant, built on ground that is now in the crater of subsidence over the Inspiration- Miami orebodies, flotation was being experimentally ' applied to Inspiration ore by Minerals Separation engineers in 1914, with results indicating that this process would be of major importance in the concentration of the sulfides. How best to apply it, and especially how to crush and grind the ore to the very much finer sizes required for the new process, was a serious question, properly to be answered only by doing it, in full- sized machines, under regular 'operating conditions.

INTRODUCTION Surface mining and in situ leaching of uranium have the potential to alter ground-water quality around mines and leach sites. Of particular concern is the fate of uranium and its associated trace elements: molybdenum, arsenic, and selenium. We wish to under- stand the natural processes that control trace element concentrations in ground water and how these processes will influence dispersion of the elements from a mineralized zone, both naturally and during and after mining or restoration. For example, it is commonly recognized that the trace elements are soluble in oxidizing ground water but are insoluble, and can be precipitated, in reducing ground water. Thus oxidizing, metal-bearing water leaving a deposit could re- enter reduced ground, causing the water to be re- reduced and the trace elements to be, reprecipitated. In a sense, this is recreating the original mineralization process. To accomplish the above goals, we have (1) examined the theoretical controls of concentrations based on the available geochemical and thermodynamic data, (2) determined the major ion composition and oxidation-reduction status of Oakville waters because of the influence of these factors on trace element solubility, and (3) determined trace element concentrations and distribution in Oakville ground water. The last approach is used to evaluate how well actual behavior follows predicted behavior. This report focuses on two elements, uranium and molybdenum, because they exemplify the results obtained. The report also is restricted to a regional study of Oakville ground water. Results of more de- tailed study in and around major uranium districts in the Oakville and much of the raw data that support the conclusions in this report are presented in Galloway, Henry and Smith (1980). This report is part of that larger study, which concerned the depositional systems, hydrology, and geochemistry of the Oakville. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency funded the study, under grant numbers R-805357-01 and R-805357-02. Theoretical controls were determined by reviewing the available literature on aqueous chemistry and behavior of uranium and molybdenum. To aid in under- standing water chemistry, Oakville water analyses were run through a modified version of the computer model WATEQF (Plumer, Jones, and Truesdell, 1976). WATEQF calculates speciation of dissolved ions and determines saturation with respect to a variety of minerals. In the discussion below, ion activity products (IAP) are compared with the equilibrium constant (KT) for various reactions and mineral products. Values of log IAP/KT near zero indicate that the water is in equilibrium with a mineral. Values less than -1 indicate considerable undersaturation and values greater than +1 indicate oversaturation. Galloway, Henry, and Smith (1980) give a more complete discussion of the application of this approach to Oakville water chemistry. Eh-pH diagrams have been constructed or adapted from the literature to predict what form -- dissolved ion or stable mineral species -- uranium and molybdenum assume under various conditions. Construction of the diagrams has followed procedures described by Garrels and Christ (1965). This approach is particularly appropriate because the solubility of the elements is Eh-dependent, and Eh varies greatly within the Oakville aquifer. A number of assumptions or approximations are inherent in the use of Eh-pH diagrams and chemical models such as WATEQF and in the interpretation of water chemistry in general. Both Eh-pH diagrams and chemical modeling rely entirely upon available thermo- dynamic data, including free energies of formation and dissociation constants for various reactions. These values are known to varying degrees of accuracy. Most major ions and minerals are relatively well control- led; however, data for trace metals are much poorer. Thermodynamic data are not available for some minerals, and for other minerals, two or more divergent values exist. By necessity, we have relied on the judgment of others to evaluate thermodynamic data. Calculations by WATEQF and constructions of Eh-pH diagrams are based on an assumption of equi1ibrium. Equilibrium may not be comnon in low-temperature aqueous environments; at best, ground-water composi tion may be in a state of dynamic equilibrium, continuously changing due to changes in environmental conditions. Eh-pH diagrams show what phases are stable at equilibrium under given conditions; they do not prove that the phases actually exist. Many minerals persist or form metastably under conditions outside their equilibrium stability field. The kinetics of reactions, which cannot be evaluated here, are important in determining what phases occur. Kinetics may be less of a problem for ground water that travels and evolves slowly through a semihomogeneous matrix than for many other natural systems. Eh-pH diagrams show equilibrium fields only of phases included. They do not indicate anything about stability relative to phases not included in the diagram. WATEQF, obviously, cannot calculate the degree of saturation of a mineral not included in the program or for which the appropriate ions were not analyzed. Thus, a mineral that was not considered may be the most stable phase under a given set of conditions and may control the solubility of a trace element. The Pachuca - Real del Monte district has produced about 46.6 kt (51,300 ton) Ag from subvolcanic vein deposits. Three types of wall rock alteration are spatially related to the veins: K-feldspar, propylitic, and phyllic. K-feldspar alteration occurs within veins; propylitic alteration occurs in fractured rocks between veins; and phyllic alteration occurs above veins. Concentrations of some trace elements in altered rocks relative to unaltered rocks are summarized below. [ ]

This paper addresses issues associated with ore pass degradation caused by material impact. A series of numerical experiments, using the particle flow code, were undertaken to investigate the influence of various finger raise configuration. This has allowed the identification of favorable configurations. The results of this analysis, when coupled with field observations, can contribute to the design of ore pass systems that can prolong the useful operating life of ore pass systems.

"INTRODUCTION These safety standards for anthracite mines have been prepared for use as a guide for Federal inspectors. They are a revision of ""Tentative Inspection Standards for Anthracite Mines,"" published as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7282 issued in May 1944 and used as a guide in Federal inspections. No provision made in these safety standards should be construed or operate to nullify any existing State statutes; they are intended to supplement the State statutes in the interest of increased mine safety. Mines are inspected in accordance with the Federal Coal-Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of 1941, Public Law 49, 77th Congress, H. R. 2082. Exploration by Anaconda Minerals Co. in the Rico area from 1978 through 1983 resulted in dis¬covery of the Silver Creek molybdenum deposit. The drill-indicated resource is 40 Mt (44 million st) of 0.31% Mo, and projections suggest that the deposit may exceed 182 Mt (200 million st). No source intrusion has been intersected by drilling, but its presence is sugested by intramineral silicic alkali-alaskite porphyry dikes observed at the surface and in drill holes. Age dates and fluid inclusion studies indicate that the deposit was formed 5.2 ± 0.2 m.y. ago and that more than 1200 (3937 ft) of cover has since been removed by erosion. The deposit is hosted by Precambrian quartzite and greenstone, and Paleozoic sediments. Three prominent faults intersect in the vicinity of the molybdenum deposit, and one of these, the Last Chance fault, strongly influenced the shape and location of the deposit. The juxtaposition of host rocks across the Last Chance fault reflects significant offset spanning at least three different periods. Wallrock alteration associated with the deposit includes potassic, phyllic, and propylitic zones in noncalcareous rocks and garnet and anhydrite-diopside zones in the carbonates. All +0.2% Mo mineralization is within the potassic and garnet zones. Premineral faults that intersect the deposit contain the only surface molybdenum, tungsten, and fluorine anomalies. Dispersion halos of the indicator elements were defined by drilling in the discovery phase of exploration, and are particularly well-developed in the hanging wall of the Last Chance fault.

"CSIRO Minerals has developed an integrated particle size analysis system for deployment in the grinding circuits of minerals processing plants. The system includes a slurry sampling station, a de-aeration tank and an ultrasonic particle size analyser (UltraPS). The UltraPS analyser is based on ultrasonic attenuation and velocity spectrometry combined with gamma-ray transmission. The technology is applicable to the measurement of 0.1 to 1000 µm diameter particles directly in highly concentrated slurries without dilution. The analyser incorporates a gamma-ray transmission gauge utilising an ultra-low activity radioisotope source that is exempt from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Australian licensing regulations.The UltraPS analyser consists of a submersible probe and an electronics package. The probe can be immersed directly in a minerals processing plant stream if the aeration level in the stream is low. For applications where a de-aerated slurry stream is not available, CSIRO has developed an integrated system that includes a sampling station, a de-aeration tank as well as the UltraPS analyser itself. A schematic drawing of the continuous flow gravity fed system is shown in the figure. A commercial sampling system is used to supply slurry at a rate of 2.5m3/hr to the deaeration tank. The aim of the de-aeration tank is to remove air in the slurry to a level where meaningful particle size measurements can be performed. The tank volume is about 0.2m3, thus giving the slurry flowing through the tank a mean residence time in the tank of approximately five minutes. Tests at a number of concentrators have shown that five minutes is sufficient time for slurry to de-aerate to a level where ultrasonic measurements can be made. The tank incorporates an ultrasonic level detection sensor and flow to the deaeration tank is adjusted based on the level of slurry within the tank. The UltraPS probe is mounted through a flanged section of duct, which is bolted to the bottom of the de-aeration tank."

Selenium (Se) in effluent waters has become a significant challenge for a number of industries. Toxicity studies and new reports of occurrence have certainly caused increased scrutiny and actions in the mining industry today (Sandy, DiSante, 2010). While initial activity in addressing selenium-laden waters were conducted in the coal mining industry, today a much broader range of mine types are beginning to search for solutions to selenium treatment of their mining waters, including both hard rock mining operations (gold, nickel, zinc, etc.) and soft rock mining (phosphate, uranium, etc.) Throughout North America, new regulations covering selenium discharge are either in place or being developed. While a number of physical/chemical approaches show promise in selenium treatment, when considering optimal cost and treatment efficacy issues, biological treatment ? particularly fixed-film biological treatment - is reported to be one of the most promising approaches to managing selenium-containing waters. Among biological treatment options, the fluidized bed reactor (FBR) has undergone extensive pilot testing for Se treatment in the last three years, including eight pilot programs, and the first FBR system is now operating at a coal mining site. In all tests, the FBR has been shown to be a highly cost-effective approach to selenium treatment based on its physical and performance characteristics. This is consistent with its history for reaching low levels of treatment in similar service for other oxyanions including perchlorate, nitrate and various metals. With the results from the most recent testing, the technology has been shown to be adaptable to an ever-broadening range of influent water conditions and flow rates, in varying terrains and weather conditions. Selenium occurs in various valence states from -2 to +6 (Sobolewski, 2005). The speciation of selenium plays a critical role in understanding the effectiveness of any approach for removal, especially to low levels. Elemental selenium is insoluble and has little effect on living organisms. Colloidal fractions are known to occur. In aqueous environments such as coal mining runoff, selenium is most often found as the oxygenated anions of selenite (SeO32-, Se4+) and selenate, (SeO42-, Se6+). Selenium is commonly found in mining waters in concentrations ranging from 3 to >12,000 µg/L. The U.S. National Primary Drinking Water Standard MCL is 50 µg/L for selenium (EU 10 µg/L; WHO 40 µg/L). The National Fresh Water Quality Standard is 5 µg/L for selenium. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has recommended that the National Fresh Water Quality Standard be lowered to 2 µg/L to protect fish, waterfowl, and endangered aquatic species. Several states have followed with enforcement actions at these same low levels. In Canada, permits may require stakeholders to monitor levels in water or biota, or to comply with guidelines, at either the National or Provincial levels, which can be as low as 1 or 2 µg/L in surface waters. Treatment of selenium in all mining waters presents a series of challenges. It can be present in relatively dilute concentrations and in streams with variable and often high flow rates. It can be present in many soluble and particulate forms, which may affect process design and treatability. The conditions of influent selenium-containing waters can vary, with issues such as temperature, pH, total dissolved solids and other contaminants affecting the ability to remove selenium selectively and economically. Treatment of selenium often results in the generation of a concentrated by-product requiring disposal, and re-release from residuals can occur. Beyond these issues, the physical environment of a mining operation can offer challenges such as remoteness and harsh and/or cold weather. Currently available selenium treatment technology (Table 1) includes biological treatment and a number of physical-chemical processes ? such as ion exchange, membrane filtration and adsorption ? that vary widely in efficiency and cost. Most treatment options remain either too costly and/or unproven for selenium-containing streams for reasons that include poor removal efficiency, variability in volume and composition of influents, system sizing and logistics considerations, as well as operating requirements.

Potash is Canada's leading industrial mineral in terms of value of production, with 11.1 M tonnes of muriate of potash produced in 1992 for a value in excess of $1 billion U.S. Each tonne of potash produced generates about 2 tonnes of waste salt, together with slimes and brine. The disposal of these waste products, particularly the salt and slimes which are discharged on the surface, has recently become an environmental concern. This concern is forcing companies and regulatory authorities to review disposal practices. In New Brunswick, on Canada's east coast, Potash Company of America operates a mine at which 2 M tonnes of potash ore and 0.5 M tonnes of rock salt are mined each year. The mine is situated in an environmentally sensitive area, noted for its dairy farming and salmon angling. In such an area it was recognized that the storage of waste on surface would be unacceptable, and the mine was designed around this principle. Three main waste streams - salt, slimes, and brine - must be managed as an integral part of the mining system. Around 1.5 M tonnes of fine salt tailings from the milling process and the rock salt screening operation, are sent directly to the active cut-and-fill potash stopes to be used as backfill. Slimes and excess brine from the mill are piped underground as a slurry to be discharged into one of the basin shaped stopes created by mining of the rock salt. While the slimes settle out, the clarified brine is withdrawn from part of the stope to be pumped to surface as a feedstock for the evaporator - a process which recovers the contained potash values in the brine. By designing a system which integrates the mining, processing and disposal of all product streams, and by careful production planning, it has been shown that zero effluent potash mining is possible and points the way for the industry in the future.

We have investigated a new electrochemical process for preparing lead-calcium alloys. Calcium metal, reduced fiom a molten chloride mixture, forms an alloy with liquid lead cathode. The addition of calcium carbonate to conventional CaC12-NaCl electrolyte enables us to avoid chlorine production on the anode and replace it with oxygen and carbon dioxide. The ternary system CaClz-NaC1-CaCO3 has a range of melt compositions, where the electrolysis can be held below 650°C. In order to prevent the side reaction of carbon deposition on the cathode we have separated the anolyte from the catholyte with alumina diaphragm. The factors, which affect the level of impurities and the current efficiency of the process, are discussed.

"Selective flotation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite is continuing problem since its selectivity is not perfect and current NaHS process needs closed system flotation plant because of hydrogen sulfide emission on acidic condition. Some alternative additives investigated as chalcopyrite became hydrophilic and molybdenite kept hydrophobic. XPS analysis indicated chalcopyrite became hydrophilic since iron and copper sulphate, hydroxide was covered on the surface whereas molybdenite kept hydrophobic since only molybdenite can be seen. Flotation experiments of chalcopyrite and molybdenite mixture sample indicated excellent separation that 95% of molybdenite can be recovered as froth and 93% of chalcopyrite can be recovered as sink. Flotation experiments with real bulk flotation concentration indicated similar separation result compared with current NaHS additive system. Possible mechanisms and detailed phenomenon were investigated based on the surface analysis and thermodynamic calculation etc. this alternative additive is easy to handle compared with NaHS since it does not emit effluent gas and commercially preferable.INTRODUCTIONMany copper mine often associates molybdenite (MoS2) as trace mineral. It is important to separate molybdenite and copper mineral efficiently since molybdenite is valuable mineral and also contamination of molybdenite into copper concentrate decrease concentrate value. Conventional separation of copper sulfide and molybdenite has been achieved with sulfide bulk flotation followed by selective molybdenite flotation with NaHS addition since NaHS works as a depressant for copper sulfide (Bulatovic, 2010; Ansari and Pawlik, 2007b). However, this current process shows imperfect molybdenite recovery (Liu et al., 2012, Zanin et al., 2009) and depressant such as NaHS needs to be used under specific flotation plant since it might be environmental contaminant (Ansari and Pawlik, 2007a). there are still unknown on the effect of depressant NaHS, but one of the theory is NaHS reductant effect. It is worth to investigate the effect of other reductant as depressant on chalcopyrite. On this research, typical reductant, Na2SO3 are added to utilize for selective flotation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite."

The Mt Sinivit gold project is located approximately 50km SSW of Rabaul in the Baining Mountains of the Gazelle Peninsula, East New Britain Province. The deposits were discovered in mid- 1983 and form part of a larger 26km long zone of variably aurif- erous quartz veining. There are no surface indications or previ- ous records of any prospecting activity or production from the region. The Mt Sinivit deposits consist of a series of oxide and sulphide reserves and resources contained in the Wild Dog (South- ern, Central and Northern oxide zones; Northern sulphide zone) and Kavursuki veins. The proposed exploitation of the oxide reserves by a series of small-medium sized open pits has been fostered by the PNG Department of Mining & Petroleum (DMP) as part of a government policy to encourage the development of a small-medium sized mining industry in the country. The aim of this paper is to document the steps and procedures involved in obtaining the grant of a Mining Lease emphasising the time and the expenditures required during each step of the approvals process for the Mt Sinivit project.

Maghemite is a mineral formed from magnetite oxidation at low temperatures, an intermediate term of the magnetite-hematite series. Maghemite could be misidentified as magnetite by X-ray diffraction, and/or as hematite by spot chemical analysis. Nevertheless, non-stoichiometric magnetite was detected and quantified in samples of Brazilian soils and iron ores by the Rietveld method refinement of its structure. The results were confirmed by optical microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, thus validating the method. X-ray diffraction with the refinement of the isomorphic substitution of Fe2+ by Fe3+ along the magnetite-maghemite solid solution could help to suitably characterize maghemite in iron ores.

The mechanics of impact crater formation in rock, particularly sandstone, has been sutdied, the velocity range being approximately that normally associated with oilwell gun perforators. The bullets were small steel spheres having diameters of 3/16, 9/32 and 7/16 in; impact velocities ranged from 300 to 7,000 ft/sec. The craters have two distinct parts — a cylindrical hole (or burrow) with a diameter the same as that of the impacting sphere, and a wide-angle cup comprising most of the volume of the crater. The burrow is fornred as material in front of the projectile is crushed and pushed aside, forming a cylindrical hole surrounded by a high-density zone. The clip forms as fractures are initiated in front of the projectile and propagate along logarithmic spirals, approximaling maximum shear trajectories, to the free surface of the rock. A most significant observation (made for the first time) was that, below the base of the cup in one type of sandstone, there are a group of similar fractures, not extending to the surface, which are spaced uniformly a few millimeters apart. Each fracture follows roughly the contour of the base of the cup and appears to require a certain threshold impulse to initiate it. These fractures comprise a relatively high fraction of the total, newly exposed surface area. The volume of the material removed by crushing varies as the first power of the impact velocity and the volume removed by fracturing, as the second power of the impact velocity. Penetration varies linearly with the impact velocity and is inversely proportional to the specific acoustic resistance of the target material, the proportionality constant being dependent upon the shape of the projectile. INTRODUCTION Yield of oil from a producing well is frequently enhanced by firing bullets and shaped charges through the well casing into the oil-bearing rock, forming craters and fractures from which oil can flow more readily. The purpose of this investigation has been to develop a better understanding of the mechanics of impact crater formation in rock, particularly sandstone, the velocity range being approximately that normally associated with oilwell gun perforators. FORCES OPERATIVE DURING IMPACT When a projectile moving at considerable velocity strikes a- massive target such as oil-bearing sandstone, intense and complex transient stress situations develop within both the projectile and the rock or sandstone against which it is striking. Usually the struck rock fails, the missile or projectile penetrating into the rock to some depth where it comes to rest or is forcibly ejected from its burrow by expansion of a plug of target material compressed in front of it. When the impact velocity is very high, the projectile itself may fail, breaking apart or becoming distorted; this situation is not considered here, the discussion being limited to nondeforming projectiles. Many experimental studies'.' have been carried out to determine the nature of the mechanics of crater formation and the salient features of the forces coming into play, some of the earliest studies being the French Army experiments performed at Metz between 1835 and 1845.' The stratagem in most instances has been to make a post-mortem examination of the crater, measuring volume and depth of penetration and deducing force relationships from these observations rather than performing the more difficult (usually almost impossible) feat of measuring stresses during penetration. In many materials, the force acting during penetration of the projectile is found to be the sum of two components—(1) a constant force, independent of the velocity, representing some inherent strength of the target material; and (2) a component, proportional to the square of the velocity, representing inertial forces. For such materials, the average force per unit area acting on the projectile at any instant while it is in motion and being decelerated may be written F/A = a + bv2 . . . (1) where v is the velocity of the projectile at that instant, A is the cross-sectional area of the penetrating projectile taken normal to its trajectory, and a and b are constants which are dependent upon the target material and the shape of the projectile. It follows that the total penetration s is given by .........(2) where v, is the velocity of the projectile when it just strikes the target. Values of a and b for spherical projectiles impacting in a loose sand-gravel mixture and compacted earth were obtained in the Metz experiments. When explosives are detonated in the borehole where there is an air gap between the explosive charge and the borehole of inner wall, the shock cave in an air gap travelling ahead of the detonation front sill be generated. This shock wave is called the precursor air shock wave (PAS). The explosive is precompressed by the PAS, and as a result of that the detonation failure occur on occasion. This phenomenon is well known as channel effect.

The recovery of Platinum Group Elements from various industrial scraps and spent materials in the form of high and low grade, such as, impure metals, matte, catalysts and other ceramic substrates, etc., has .been described by using high pressure reaction method. Nickel, Stainless Steel, Titanium and glass lined reaction vessels? are used in the reaction process. Primarily, the method involves either direct leaching of the substrates from the metal value or dissolving the precious metal from the substrate. Both acids and alkalies are used along with other reagents in the reaction process. The temperature and pressure of the leaching process are the main criteria for the reaction kinetics.

DRILLING and blasting in anthracite open-pit mines is a continuous problem to contractors and explosive engineers because of the diverse conditions caused by the nature of the geological formations, the extensive mining of the portions of coal beds near the surface, and the proximity of many strip pits to populated areas. Pennsylvania anthracite occurs in four separate long and narrow fields totaling only 480 sq miles. The coal measures are rock strata and coal beds that are considerably folded and faulted. The crests of the anticlines are eroded extensively. The beds outcrop on the mountain sides and dip under the valleys. At first only the upper portions of the syn-clines could be stripped. Now stripping to increasingly greater depths is economically possible, as is indicated by the fact that the proportion of freshly mined anthracite produced by strip mining has increased from 3.7 pct of the total tonnage in 1930 to 29.6 pct in 1950. Much of the rock overlying the deeper beds now being stripped is so extensively broken that considerable difficulty is experienced in drilling satisfactory blast holes and in using explosives in such manner as to insure a uniformly broken material easily removed by the excavating machinery. Such breaking of rock strata has occurred because the bed now being stripped has been mined extensively in former years by underground methods, and tops of gangways and chambers have subsequently failed. Draglines are used to uncover coal where the overburden can be moved with little or no re-handling. These machines range in size from those having a 2 cu yd capacity bucket on a 60-ft boom to those handling a 25 cu yd bucket on a 200-ft boom. Draglines are also used to strip to the bottom of the coal basins if the depth and the distance between the crops are not too great. For this type of operation blast holes are drilled full depth to the bed. These holes are commonly 30 to 90 ft deep; however, in exceptional cases, holes may be as shallow as 12 ft or as deep as 130 ft. Drilling is normally done for blasts of 12,000 to 60,000 cu yd of overburden, 30,000 cu yd being considered an average blast if vibration is not the controlling factor. Where the stripping of wide basins or the exposure of a moderately pitching vein makes the use of draglines impractical, dipper front shovels equipped with 4 to 6 cu yd buckets load into trucks. Overburden is removed in benches of 25 to 30 ft with blast holes drilled 4 or 5 ft deeper than the planned floor of the bench. For shovels under 5 cu yd bucket capacity the volume blasted varies from 8000 to 12,000 cu yd, whereas a volume of 30,000 to 50,000 cu yd of overburden is frequently blasted at one time for the larger shovels where vibration is not an important factor. During the past decade the churn drill, generally the Model 42-T Bucyrus-Erie blast hole drill equipped for drilling 9-in. diam holes, has become the most common blast hole drilling machine. Electricity powers half the churn drills in use and is preferred on the large strippings where electric shovels are operated and the working area is concentrated. On these operations the cost of additional electricity for the drills is less than the cost of fuel to operate diesel units because of the existing large demand load of the excavating equipment. Moreover, electric motors start more easily in cold weather and generally are less expensive to maintain. Diesel driven units are employed where a higher degree of mobility is required. The average drilling speed is 8 ft per hr, although in softer rocks a rate of 15 ft per hr is attained. Where rock is hard and strata is badly broken, drill speeds may be less than 2 ft per hr. Low drilling production results under these circumstances when loose material falling from the upper portion of the drill holes causes drill stems to be jammed. Rock formations vary so greatly in the region that a 9-in. diam churn drill bit may become dull after drilling only 2 ft or may drill satisfactorily for 56 ft; however, an average of 35 ft is usual in sandstone of medium hardness. Dull bits are hoisted to flat bed trucks by the sand line of the drill and are usually sharpened in the contractor's bit shop adjacent to the job. Care is generally taken to cover the thread end of the bit with a cap. To facilitate handling of bits around the drill, a heavy thread protector having an eye top is becoming more popular than the flat-top rubber or metal cap furnished with new bits. The 9-in. diam blast holes for a 25 to 30 ft bench are normally on 18x18 ft to 20x20 ft spacings, depending on the character of the overburden, although in broken ground 15x18 ft centers may be used to obtain better breakage and a more even bottom for the bench.
