"Abstract This paper discusses the execution of pile installation and design issues at two environmentally challenging industrial sites in North America. Environmental regulations set constraints on the design and require versatility in choice of technology.For a proposed bridge, due to protected fish habitat, performing soil borings within 30 m of the creek embankment was prohibited. The limited subsurface profile indicated a thick upper layer of granular material, thus driving H-piles was considered. However, to limit generation of vibration and noise in the protected area, drilled piles had to be used. During execution, the subsurface profile differed from that in the borings 30 m away. Very soft, saturated silt was encountered at the bottom of the caisson and the length had to be redesigned very quickly while the contractor waited for instruction. For a new structure in uncontrolled fill area, performing soil borings was not allowed. It was known that a layer of peat was present in the area, but no information regarding the thickness and extent. The subsurface profile generally consisted of granular material overlying a thick compressible silt layer. Somewhere within the granular layer peat would likely be encountered. Franki piles were chosen to penetrate the peat and bear in the underlying granular material. During environmental sampling in the area, methane gas was encountered and Franki piles were no longer a viable option due to safety concerns. The foundation system was changed to steel H-piles driven to bedrock, which was more than 50 m below the ground surface and sloping. Rock shoes that would work to significant slopes had to be used in order to increase the likelihood of good embedment within the bedrock. Also, due to obstruction of an approximately 3 m thick debris field that was encountered in the upper granular soils, some of the piles had to be relocated and extra piling needed to compensate for such differences. The results of PDA testing to estimate compressive capacity and a series of lateral load tests are presented.INTRODUCTIONThe design issues that are encountered during construction can be quite problematic and have a significant impact on schedule. In order to avoid such impact on the project, a thorough subsurface investigation should be considered prior to design and construction. Better understanding of environmental regulations also prevents costly changes to the foundation design. This paper discusses the execution of pile installation and the design issues at two environmentally challenging sites in North America.BRIDGEDuring the subsurface investigation for a proposed industrial building complex, several boreholes were drilled within the footprint or in close proximity of various structures, with Standard Penetration (SPT) sampling of the upper coarse-grained soils (sand/gravel) and undisturbed sampling of the lower fine-grained soils (silt/clay). The SPT blow counts (N60) were corrected by a factor of 1.35 in order to incorporate the SPT automatic energy transfer ratio. When Modified California Sampler was used, a correction factor of 0.44 to 0.64 was also applied. N60 values were further corrected for gravel to avoid artificially high blow counts during the analyses due to spoon samples contact with gravel and cobbles, and the corrected values of (NG)60 (limited to a maximum value of 50 blows/300 mm) were used for design. The information from the SPT boreholes was then used to assess the subsurface conditions beneath the structures, as well as for a nearby bridge that was designed to cross over a creek. Since performing soil borings within 30 m of the creek embankment was prohibited due to the protected fish habitat, the investigation with regard to the bridge abutments was limited to two deep boreholes (B10-33 and B10-34) at the bridge location and two additional boreholes (B10-35 and B10- 36) located approximately 200 m upstream. After World War II the Bureau of Mines studied methods of producing synthesis gas including a plan to gasify coal in place. Consequently, under a cooperative agreement with the Alabama Power Co., Bureau engineers directed a series of experiments that were carried out on the property of the Alabama Power Co. at Gorgas, Ala. The purpose of underground gasification of coal, regardless of method used, is to obtain the energy contained in the fuel for use on the surface, without mining in the usual sense of the term. Underground gasification can be described as (1) a process where coal, in place, is consumed by partial combustion with air, oxygen, steam, or any combination of these to produce a low calorific value gas (80 to 300 Btu per cu ft) or (2) a complete combustion process in which air is used to produce a gas containing carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and considerable thermal energy.

The work presented shows results of electrochemical study of pyrite hydrophobicity evaluated by air bubble induction time (IT) measurements. On the basis of measured IT?s an average thickness of the thin liquid film prior to its rupture has been evaluated, which confirms long-range character of the interactions between air bubbles and hydrophobic surfaces. Obtained data are discussed in the frame of recent studies of structures of solid-liquid interface based on molecular dynamics simulations and results of surface force measurements.

The recoveries of the three cobalt minerals in the Mount Cobalt deposit, cobaltite CoAsS, erythrite CO3(AS04)8H20, and new cobalt mineral with a composition approximating 2CoO.CaO.Fe203.2As205.11H2O were investigated using physical and surface-chemical processes.Over 80 per cent cobalt recovery was achieved by tabling a cobaltite-mineralized sample, while about 76 per cent cobalt recovery was obtained by dry feed magnetic separation of a sample containing erythrite and the new cobalt mineral. The resultant primary magnetic concentrate with a cobalt grade of 5.5 per cent, was able to be upgraded to 14.4 per cent cobalt by regrinding .and a further magnetic separation.Electrophoretic mobility - pH responses for each of the three cobalt minerals were found to be similar. Each mineral remained negative over the pH range 3 to 11 and was most negative at mildly alkaline pH values.Cobaltite was floated effectively with amyl and ethyl xanthate collectors under acidic conditions at collector concentrations of 10-2M to 10-5M. Erythrite showed a similar flotation response using 10-sM amyl xanthate. The practical application of these laboratory separations to an industrial process is suggested.

Maintaining fleet productivity, which consists of balancing loader and truck performance, has always been a challenging task. An automatic dispatching system (ADS) is implemented to help monitoring fleet condition and assign trucks to a designated loader. Integrated data from real time Global Positioning System, Vehicle Health Monitoring System, and other production related data are acquired to support the ADS. However, the abnormal truck cycle has been the main culprit which resulted in unnecessary loader hanging time and trucks queuing time. Hanging and queuing time accounted for 2.34 and 2.07 minutes respectively per loading cycle or equal to 2,861 loose cubic metres per fleet per day production losses. Using integrated dispatching system data, the authors conducted research to study a truck’s hauling cycle that affects fleet productivity. The data is modelled to obtain the arrival rate pattern in a front loading area by adopting the queue theory algorithm. This paper aims to understand the potential pattern of a truck’s cycle abnormality and to resolve its occurrence.

"In order to construct an underground two-layer expressway branch junction structure with a height of 14.7 m and a width of 22.3 m, two shield tunnels in each layer were combined by using a non-cut-and-cover enlargement method in sedimentary soft rock. Before and during the construction work, preliminary analysis, in-situ investigations and laboratory tests were conducted to ensure the construction safety and to evaluate the deformation characteristics of sedimentary soft rock. The construction project was safely executed without any water leakage or collapse of tunnel working face. The predicted results from preliminary analysis were almost similar to the measured values. From the detailed investigation of measured results, it was confirmed that the deformation characteristic of the sedimentary soft rock was observed to a small extent as the ground deformation derived from construction work. INTRODUCTION In recent years, some newly constructed urban expressways in Japan are being planned as underground structures due to the consideration of roadside environment. The construction of such underground expressways is frequently conducted using a shield tunneling, a typical one of non-cut-and-cover methods, to prevent any adverse effect to traffic in arterial roads, operation of nearby commercial establishments, and daily lives of local residents during construction work. For underground urban expressway, the connections with existing road network on ground surface or on elevated sections are indispensable, which require the construction of an underground branch junction with large cross-section. This raises a technical difficulty regardless of the open-cut or non-open-cut construction method."

INTRODUCTION Shrinkage mining at Inco Ltd.'s Crean Hill mine can best be defined as a horizontal breasting method utilizing the broken ore for the mining floor and to provide wall support, with draw from a series of boxholes or draw¬points at the base of the stoping block. In choosing to shrink a given block of ore, the initial investigation centers on the ore configuration and grade, the expected ground conditions in the stoping area, the expected profit compared to alternative mining methods, the future production requirements, development lead time, the availability and type of equipment in the area, and the availability of experienced miners. These factors are weighed against other mining methods and shrinkage mining is chosen when the advantages outweigh the dis¬advantages. These will be discussed in more detail later. At Inco Ltd.'s Crean Hill mine, shrinkage mining makes up 17% of total mine production and is decreasing due to the advent of advanced blasthole techniques, notably in-the-hole drilling. Shrinkage is an adaptable mining method that is currently employed in narrow irregular ore zones, as undercuts for in-the-hole blast¬hole stopes, in ore bodies that do not extend from level to level, and in areas where quick production is required with a minimum of capital outlay or minimum develop¬ment. Two major types are currently in use which are classified on the basis of type of draw system employed. These are the utilization of load-haul-dump (LHD) equipment drawing from drawpoints, and the slusher and train method drawing from boxholes into a slusher trench and loading into a train. A third method being phased out is drawing from chutes directly into a train. In all three methods the actual stoping operation remains the same. In the initial planning of a mining block, the ore body is first located using an exploration diamond drill¬ing program. This is essentially done at a 130-m (400¬ft) spacing and it gives an indication of the amount of ore, grade of ore, the configuration of the ore body, as well as other geological features such as ground condi¬tions which will affect future mining. This drilling is done from an exploration drift 165 m (500 ft) long in the hanging wall and covers a vertical extent of 330 to 670 m (1000 to 2000 ft). However, these data are not accurate enough for detailed planning. When the de¬cision has been made to mine, a preliminary develop¬ment drill drift is driven in such a position that it can serve the dual purposes of allowing the ore body to be drilled off in detail, or of later serving as a haulage or access drift. Diamond drilling from this drift is usually on a 15-m (50-ft) grid spacing and gives adequate information for detailed planning. Utilizing the drill data, a decision is made on the mining type. For a shrinkage operation, the stoping block is ideally 49 m (150 ft) in length and a maximum of 13 m (40 ft) in width. Lengths of 65 m (200 ft) are considered a practical maximum because of the length of time the back of the stope remains open during the min¬ing of a cut. A minimum length of 13 m (40 ft) is used because the amount of time spent in opening a new cut increases in comparison with the total stoping time. The maximum width of 13 m (40 ft) is used because ex¬perience with the ground indicates that generally stope backs tend to be unstable over greater widths. However, widths of 33 m (100 ft) have been mined. A minimum width of 5 m (15 ft) is used to allow an effective draw, but in unusual cases, a width of 3 m (10 ft) has been mined successfully. The dip of the ore should not be less than 1.04 rad (60°). Angles flatter than this will not pull properly resulting in inefficient mining because of ore hang-ups on the footwall side of the stope and the need for large stagings on the hanging wall. In considering shrinkage, mining ground conditions play an important role. Strong shearing, cross faulting, or dikes are avoided. These usually cause dangerous mining conditions and an alternative safer mining method which will give adequate support to these adverse ground conditions is employed. Production requirements are taken into considera¬tion when planning a shrinkage mining program. In it¬self, shrinkage mining is capable of producing ore in a relatively short time with little capital development. If quick production is required, this method can produce ore rapidly as all that is required is that the draw system be completed and the miners with jacklegs and stopers produce a limited amount of ore. The obvious disadvan¬tage is that not all the ore broken can be pulled from the stope immediately. However, a mining horizon with sev¬eral shrinkage stopes in different stages of production can adequately maintain scheduled tonnage require¬ments, the cycle being stopes under development, stopes actively mining, and stopes completed and pulling. When the decision has been made to use shrinkage mining in a given block, the haulage and draw system is driven. The proximity of the orepass system dictates whether the system is to be a LHD operation or a slusher trench operation. If the orepass system is in close prox¬imity to the stoping block, LHD equipment is employed because of its ability to operate efficiently over short haulage distances. A long tram to the orepass usually dictates a slusher trench operation with haulage by train. Internal orepass systems are used effectively with LHD equipment with a load-out and retramming taking place on a lower horizon. In addition, stoping blocks in older areas of the mine are developed track because of the capital cost involved in converting an existing level to trackless mining. DRIFT DEVELOPMENT USING LHD EQUIPMENT The haulage drift for a draw system using LHD equipment is driven parallel to the ore body in the foot¬wall at a sufficient distance to allow an 11.5-m (35-ft) drawpoint to be driven into the ore (Fig. 1). The actual position of the drift depends entirely upon the ore con¬figuration and the drift size depends on the equipment to be used. Drift sizes of 4.6 x 4.1 m (14 x 121/2 ft) for an St-4 and 3.8 x 3.6 m (111/2 x 11 ft) for an St-2 meet company and government clearance standards and allow sufficient space to accommodate a ventilation pipe. "The Bankei-Kitanosawa tunnel that is located in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan includes a 450m long section near the arrival point where mudstone which can liquate out natural hazardous materials such as arsenic and selenium exceeding the tolerance stipulated by country as well as weathered mudstone and unconsolidated sedimentary rocks with small overburden and the competence factor less than 1.0 are present. The mucks containing hazardous materials were disposed into the waterproof branch tunnels created from the inside of the main tunnel. The full face early ring closure method was employed to ensure the stability of the tunnel in the low strength rock masses having no stand-up time. As a result, the waterproof tunnels branching off the main tunnel can manage water tightness so as to ensure safety and relief against environmental risks of the hazardous materials. It is also demonstrated that the full face early ring closure method enable construction of the tunnel with a small overburden in the low strength rock masses. The lining for the tunnels was composed of with shotcrete. In addition, full face early ring closure (Sato et al., 2013) was employed to stabilize the tunnel so as to enable safe tunnel excavation in low strength rock masses where a ground arch is deemed unachievable. This paper presents the safe disposal method of mucks which are likely to liquate out natural hazardous materials as well as the full face early ring closure method and its mechanical characteristics."

Considerable interest has recently been developed in sage-brush oil because of its possible utilization as a flotation agent in the mining industry. A list of some of its physical properties, together with the method used in its extraction, may prove of interest at this time. Something over a year ago, a study of the essential oils in desert plants was begun in the Chemical Laboratory of the University of Nevada. None of the oils so far studied possess properties of special interest to engineers, except the oil of sage, Artemisia tridentata, which has exceptional power as a flotation agent. This plant, known as common sage brush, also called black sage, is widely distributed over the semi-arid West, being found quite generally on most of the dry plains and mountains west of Missouri. The method of extracting the oil followed in these experiments is very simple. The leaves, twigs and small branches are placed in an airtight drum, having a capacity of about 27 cu. ft. Steam is admitted through a number of ,small openings at the bottom of the retort, and the pressure maintained at 20 to 25 lb. per sq. in. for 3 hr. The escape of the steam from the retort is regulated by allowing it to pass through a stop-cock into a condenser. The water in the receiver is drawn off from time to time and the oil, which is insoluble and floats upon the water, is thus collected. At the end of 2 hr. most of the oil has been driven out, though traces continue to come over for a much longer time. By raising the pressure, the time required could probably be shortened and the yield increased, but the lack of laboratory equipment has prevented the carrying out of this experiment. The stock wood, bark and branches contain no oil, the distribution of the oil being limited to the leaves and young shoots. There is a seasonal variation in the amount of oil contained. Samples collected on different dates gave the following amount of oil: May 1, 0.42 per cent.; May 27, 0.6 per cent.; June 30, 0.72 per cent.; Aug. 1, 0.9 per cent.; Sept. 10, 1.0 per cent. The increase appears fairly constant from early spring, when the leaves first appear, until light frosts occur in the autumn. The first production stage in any mining operation is the breaking of whole rock into fragments small enough for loading and subseq- uent handling. This primary fragmentation is most frequently accomplished with blasting. The maximum fragment size and the fragment size distribution have an influence on the subsequent loading, handling and crushing costs. It is assumed that total rock fragmen- tation in practice is a result of an interact- ing array of radial cracks from various blastholes. The representation for the basic pattern of radial cracks emitted from a particular blasthole is first described. A model is then developed simulating the interaction between blastholes at various burdens and spacings, and in simultaneous and delayed modes. The resultant picture is analysed and a fragment size distribution calculated. Methods of incorporating the existing faults in the rock are also discussed. Finally application of this model to various facets of mining are considered.

Exploration activity for diamonds in Canada has recently experienced a dramatic increase. Disclosure of a diamond discovery exhibiting features of a potentially economic deposit contained in a kimberlite pipe in the Lac de Gras area of Canada's Northwest Territories has sparked substantial interest in-Canada and abroad and has triggered the largest staking rush in terms of area in the history of Canadian exploration. In this paper, we report on the nature and extent of current exploration activity in Canada for diamonds (with special attention to Arctic regions), the results of this activity to date, and the context in terms of current world markets for diamonds.

"The Navan zinc-lead ore deposit (70 million tonnes) is hosted principally (97%) by the Meath Formation (Lower Carboniferous, Courceyan, Navan Group), comprising a lower, mainly carbonate mudstone unit, the Stackallan Member, and an upper grainstone-dominated unit. TheStackallan Member, about 60 m thick, comprises about 35 peritidal cycles including an oolitic grain-stone interval. Grainstones forming the upper part of the formation, about 150 m thick, comprise at least six shallowing-upward ramp cycles. Emergence horizons are indicated by subaerial dissolution surfaces, in situ breccias, and a single palaeosol.Most dolomitization at Navan is con?ned to the Meath Formation. The linear dolomite body,trending NE-SW, has a ?attened, laterally limited, tabular geometry in cross-section, suggesting that dolomitizing ?uids initially rose vertically, cross-cutting stratigraphic and sedimentological bound-aries, although ?uid ?ow was subsequently controlled by these features.Three stages of dolomitization are indicated by textural relationships, cathodoluminescence (CL),oxygen isotopes, and ?uid inclusion data. Stage 1 crystals, with generally dully luminescing cores and up to six overlying subsidiary zones, are the main replacive phase. Crystal surfaces are commonly corroded and overlain by bright stage 2 rhombs (which also form new nuclei lining molds and fractures). Three subsets of zones are present in stage 2 crystals: bright, non-luminescent, and dull; these are locally separated by additional corrosion surfaces. Stage 3 comprises relatively large baroque crystals, generally dully luminescent but with up to seven sub-zones. Isotopic and ?uid inclusion data suggest growth of successive stages from waters which became progressively hotter(60°–160°C).The distribution of the ores follows the dolomite trend. Ores were precipitated between Stages1 and 2 of dolomite growth, following Stage 2, and also during the nucleation and growth of Stage3 crystals. Dolomitization and mineralization appear to have been temporally and genetically related. The cyclic sedimentation of the host rocks, which accentuates lithological and petrographical contrasts between depositional units, controlled dolomitization. The relationship between dolomitization and mineralization, which is closely associated with faults, provides powerful exploration criteria. The recognition of these features in limestones elsewhere in the Irish ore ?eld may point toward unrecognized zinc-lead prospects."

The alkaline hydrothermal processing of K-feldspar rocks in an autoclave can be a pathway to synthesize a potassium fertilizer for tropical soils that is potentially cheaper and more efficient than traditional potash (KCl). When K-feldspar undergoes hydrothermal alteration in the presence of calcium oxide (CaO), it generates a complex mixture of calcium-aluminum-silicate-hydrate (CASH) minerals that incorporate K atoms stochastically in their structure. These atoms are subsequently released, as shown in a test-tube leaching test, indicating a possible uptake by crops. The relationship between the processing temperature and time in the autoclave for the hydrothermal reaction and the resulting mineralogy and elemental release are only partially understood and are investigated in this study. Elucidating that relationship is the key requisite for subsequent techno-economic analysis, and ultimately for the development of a fertilizer that can be considered as a feasible alternative to KCl.

The Bureau of Mines studied the feasibility of water diversion and overburden dewatering for underground coal mines in the Appalachian region. All relevant published literature pertaining to the occurrence and control of surface and ground water in underground coal mines was reviewed, and the impacts of mine water with respect to health and safety, production, environment, and costs were assessed and are described in this report. The report also identifies the sources of water inflow into underground coal mines, and gives a summary description and evaluation of techniques that can be used to reduce the amount of water entering these mines. Engineering practices currently used by operating coal mines in the Appalachian region to prevent the movement of ground and surface water into active coal workings were reviewed and are summarized. Major emphasis has been placed on the identification of geologic and hydrologic conditions of the site, the water control methods used, and an evaluation of their technical and cost effectiveness.

Gold at the Harbour Lights Mine (HLM), WA occurs principally in pyrite (Py) and arsenopyrite (AsPy) minerals rendering it inaccessible to direct cyanidation. Froth flotation produces a concentrate with low mass recovery and with high recoveries of sulfides. After investigating several alternatives, a novel flotation process has been developed to separate the concentrate into pyrite and arsenopyrite rich fractions. The pyrite fraction is finely ground and cyanide leached, while the arsenopyrite is treated off-site. This paper describes the separation process from laboratory bench scale through to commercial operation at the HLM gold plant.

O ensaio não destrutivo por ultrassom é amplamente utilizado para detectar e dimensionar descontinuidades no interior do material. A técnica TOFD (Time Of Flight Diffraction [do inglês]) foi a técnica ultrassônica utilizada. Entretanto, a classificação do tipo de descontinuidade, a partir dos sinais ultrassônicos obtidos durante uma inspeção requer um profissional altamente capacitado. Esta tarefa pode ser realizada por algoritmos de reconhecimento de padrões, capazes de processar rapidamente uma grande quantidade de dados. Nesse trabalho, foram simulados três tipos de descontinuidades em juntas soldadas: falta de penetração, poro e trinca, utilizando-se o Método dos Volumes Finitos (MVF). Em seguida, foi aplicado o método de reconhecimento de padrões K-vizinhos mais próximos (K-NN – K-nearest neighbors [do inglês]), para verificar como esses dados são separados. Esse trabalho é um passo inicial para o emprego de simulação numérica do ensaio ultrassônico para produzir sinais simulados e utilizá-los no treinamento de ferramentas de reconhecimento de padrão, a serem futuramente testados com sinais ultrassônicos experimentais. O K-NN classificou bem os sinais simulados. Conseguindo uma taxa média de acerto de aproximadamente 84%.

Australian rutile was chlorinated in the presence of CO or carbon. The chlorination velocity in CO was found to be strongly influenced by temperature and proportional to the CO concentration, but independent of the Cl, concentration. In the presence of carbon, the reaction velocity is much higher. The reactivity of the carbon and the distance between the carbon and the rutile surfaces are important variables. The reaction velocity is approximately proportional to the Cl, concentration and independent of the CO concentration of the surrounding atmosphere. Experiments with fluidized-bed chlorination of carbon-rutile mixtures indicate that the motion of the bed has little influence on the reaction velocity. At low temperatures, the chlorination velocity of dense tablets is much greater than that of TiO, coke mixtures suitable for fluidization. The reaction mechanism is discussed. In the industrial production of TiCl, rutile is chlorinated in the presence of carbon. Disregarding intermediate steps, the reaction may be expressed by the following equations: The ultimate object of this study was to find out whether the reaction velocity was higher in fluidized bed operation compared with chlorination of pelle-tized carbon-rutile mixtures. From a literature survey and preliminary experiments it was learned that some basic knowledge about the reaction mechanism was needed for a good experimental design. Therefore the following sets of experiments were carried out: 1) Studies on the reaction velocity in the chlorination of rutile with CO as the only reducing agent. 2) Chlorination of separate rutile-carbon tablets. 3) Chlorination of rutile-carbon tablets at different temperatures with various kinds of carbon, various grain sizes, and various tablet-making techniques. This series of experiments was carried out not only with pure chlorine but also with mixtures of chlorine with argon, CO and CO,. 4) Chlorination of rutile-carbon tablets made in a strictly standardized manner. 5) Chlorination of static-bed rutile-carbon mixtures. 6) Fluidized-bed chlorination of the same mixture. The experiments 4 to 6 formed the final and direct test of the main question: Static bed vs fluidized bedo. Although there are many patents and papers dealing with the general aspects of chlorination, only few experiments from which detailed information can be obtained have been reported in the literature. Pamfilov and coworkersl3 have studied chlorination of TiO, with CO or carbon as the reducing agent. They found that the weight decrease per hour at 600o to 800°C amounted to 11 to 14 pct with CO and 45 to 51 pct with carbon. They suggest that phosgene might be an intermediate in the chlorination of TiO,. Takimoto and Hattori have chlorinated reduced titanium oxide (TiO) and found a very high rate of TiC1, -production. They proved that the composition of the gas from the chlorination of rutile-carbon mixtures contained mainly CO. They reported for instance 74.7 pct CO, and 5.6 pct CO at 800°C at which temperature the Boudouard equilibrium composition is 12 pct CO and 88 pct CO. Seligman and Segerchano6 have studied the chlorination of TiO. They proved that Ti0 and chlorine react rather rapidly at temperatures as low as 300°C. Above 400°C, the reaction was complete. At 500°C the velocity of this reaction was much higher than was chlorination of TiO, + C. McTaggart,7 Nishimura, et al. and Wilskam have chlorinated mixtures of carbon and various kinds of rutile or beneficated ilmenite. Nishimura, et al. also report the results from reduction of TiO, with H2, CO, or carbon. At 900°C only 1 pct Ti O is formed in 2 hrs. At 1100°C 23.1 pct Ti, 0, was formed if elementary carbon was present. No carbide formation occurred below 1400°C. McIntosh and Cofferll have observed that the CO, content of the exit gases from chlorination of rutile and calcined petroleum coke is appreciably higher than found in the Boudouard equilibrium. At 900°C the ratio (CO, /CO + CO) is about 80 pct, whereas the equilibrium value is about 2 pct. W. E. Dunn12 has studied the chlorination rates of several TiO,-bearing minerals with CO + Cl, or COCl . Chlorinations were carried out either in a fluidized reactor or a fixed-bed reactor, both having a 30-mm diameter. The results obtained in both reactors were comparable. Introduction A number of processes for deriving more convenient liquid and gaseous fuels from coal are commercially available or in final stages of development. Generally, synfuels from coal processes have efficiencies ranging from 50 to 70%. Considerable engineering design and development work are necessary to bring forth commercial plants using the various technologies-but technological breakthroughs are not expected or needed. Gasification While a variety of solids handling, gas contacting, and gas quality upgrading techniques may be employed in the various gasification processes, the primary goal is the same-to convert a sulfur-containing solid to an essentially sulfur-free gaseous product. The gaseous product may be a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide with nitrogen. Definitions are not rigorous, but high-Btu gas is generally over 900 Btu/scf(33 534 kJ/m3) and low-Btu gas is generally below 350 Btu/scf(13 041 kJ/m3). Medium or intermediate gas falls between these values. High-Btu production is more difficult, as it requires additional upgrading of a low- or intermediate-Btu gas stream to produce a commercially acceptable product. The carbon/ hydrogen ratio is adjusted either by rejecting a portion of the carbon, increasing the hydrogen, or a combination of both. The chemical processing steps include production processing gas containing carbon oxides and hydrogen by the reaction of carbon and steam (gasification); reaction of hydrogen and coal to form methane (a hydrogasification process); reaction of hydrogen and carbon monoxide to produce methane (methanation); and the removal of impurities. The gasification processes share a number of common techniques. The coal received at the plant site must be further cleaned and crushed or ground before it can enter the gasifier. Conventional cleaning methods are used to remove extraneous materials such as metal, rocks, etc. For some processes the coal must be finely ground so it may be fluidized or entrained in a flowing gas stream. For other processes crushing and sizing only are required. Agglomerating coals may be pretreated by heating, mild oxidation with air, or other procedures to assure smooth gasifier operation and to avoid reactor plugging. Nonagglomerating coals Such as lignite and subbituminous coal normally do not require pretreatment. Feeding a solid material such as coal to a higher pressure reactor is a difficult task. Dry feeders using a series of pressurized lock hoppers, or wet systems in which a slurry is pumped into the reactor, are used. The gasification step is the heart of the process. Here, the solid feed material is contacted with synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen). The coal is devolatilized and a portion of the fixed carbon converted to methane. The gas-solids contacting methods used include fixed beds, fluidized beds, moving beds, entrained beds, and free-fall systems. The gasification process, overall, is endothermic and the heat required to maintain reaction rates is usually supplied by burning a portion of the coal feed. External heat sources such as electric resistance heating, molten salt or solid heat carriers, and the introduction of a hot hydrogen stream also have been tested. Following the gasification step the particulate materials and heavy hydrocarbons contained in the reactor effluent are removed by a water quench and solids separation system. If low-Btu gas or synthesis gas is the desired product, the raw gas is scrubbed to remove carbon dioxide and sulfur compounds and then is used directly. No presente trabalho, processos de conformação a frio e recozimento foram aplicados à liga de magnésio ZK60A (Mg-6%Zn-1%Zr) com o objetivo de determinar a cinética dos fenômenos de recuperação e recristalização para permitir o refino de grão. Para tanto, foi desenvolvida uma série de matrizes de conformação para a trefilação incremental de barras circulares da liga ZK60A inicialmente recebida no estado envelhecido (T5), resultando em reduções de 7,8%, 15,4%, 22,6% e 29,4%. Após cada passe de trefilação, as propriedades mecânicas do material foram determinadas. O estudo do recozimento foi realizado em amostras com o máximo encruamento a temperaturas de 400°C, 350°C, 300°C, 250°C, 200°C e 150°C. Pela metodologia aplicada, foi possível avaliar a cinética do processo de recristalização da liga ZK60A e determinar a sua energia de ativação.

The Renard kimberlite cluster is located in the Monts Otish region of Quebec, Canada. A Canadian National Instrument (NI) 43-101 compliant resource statement for the Renard kimberlites 2, 3, 4 and 9 and the Lynx kimberlite dyke was first issued in 2008 followed by a Preliminary Economic Assessment and the development of a conceptual mine plan. Following a successful drill program in 2009 that greatly expanded the amount of kimberlite in Renard 2, a revised resource statement was issued in December 2009 comprising 23 million carats of Indicated Mineral Resources and 13 million carats of Inferred Mineral Resources, a threefold increase on the previous estimate. The project is currently the focus of a second Preliminary Economic Assessment and it is expected that a full feasibility and permitting program will commence in 2010 leading to the creation of Quebec's first diamond mine by 2013.
