The objective of the work reported herein was to evaluate state-of-the-art repeaters used in wireless communications to determine their suitability for use in extending the range of portable and mobile communications in underground mine applications. The scope of the work included wireless repeaters in the frequency range from LF (500 kilohertz) up to the one giga-hertz range. These repeaters included not only single-channel repeaters, that is F1/F1 repeaters for short range simplex party line communications, but in addition, F1/F2 type repeaters currently commercially available in the HF, VHF and UHF bands.

Fibre-reinforced geopolymer concrete (FRGC) contains no Portland cement or steel reinforcement, but instead uses synthetic fibre reinforcement and a geopolymer binder. The use of geopolymer binder in lieu of Portland cement reduces the concrete’s embedded energy (CO2 emissions) whilst the use of synthetic fibres eliminates the issue of reinforcement corrosion, thus enhancing the overall long-term durability of concrete. This paper presents the development of FRGC during a three-year project funded by the Victorian Science Agenda and a consortium of five organisations. The work involved laboratory and field trials and the production of prototype tunnel segments that have been subject to durability and fire testing.FRGC has exceeded the performance of the Portland cement-based control mix in terms of flexural strength, chloride diffusion, water sorptivity and drying shrinkage. Furthermore, the FRGC segments subjected to a simulated hydrocarbon fire test did not exhibit explosive spalling; however, the creep of FRGC was approximately three times that of the steel fibre-reinforced Portland cement-based control mix. The compressive strength and tensile splitting strength of the FRGC were also lower than the control mix. These differences need to be allowed for in the design using FRGC.Prototype bolted tunnel segments of up to 0.8?t mass have been produced from FRGC using standard production techniques and ambient curing. These were successfully produced within a 24-hour production cycle. Cut sections through the segments showed good compaction and even distribution of fibres. The estimated carbon footprint of tunnel segments produced using FRGC is approximately 70 per cent less than that of Portland cement-based segments containing 25 per cent fly ash and steel reinforcement.The results to date indicate that FRGC has the potential to produce a new generation of tunnel segments and, in general, precast concrete products with increased durability and substantially reduced carbon emissions compared to the Portland cement-based concrete with steel reinforcement.A summary of further research carried out by CH2M HILL into a complete elimination of ferrous inserts from segmental concrete tunnel lining is also summarised in this paper. The use of non-ferrous connectors for radial joints in combination with the FRGC technology in the manufacture of tunnel segments will effectively lead to development of a new generation of segmental tunnel lining systems.CITATION:Wimpenny, D, Chappell, M and Wieloch, M, 2014. The Malvern Hills coal project is now in an advanced stage of development with the stripping of overburden from above former underground workings in which a 3 m seam of subbituminous C coal with very low ash and sulphur was previously mined. The main seam dips at 45¦ to the south-east, along with other adjacent potentially recoverable thinner seams, and the strike extent of past coal mining in the Malvern Hills approaches 10 km with most extraction by underground methods. Overburden and interburden is predominantly weak mudstone, with only very minor sandstone, whilst a 1 - 2 m thick veneer of Last Glaciation loess covers the area. The coal product from the present mine site will supply the local industrial market, with production planned to peak at about 20 000 tpa. Settling pond design has been based on several different approaches, including an estimate of likely inflows from the contributing catchment of about 5 ha under predicted storms having a ten year recurrence interval. A pond of about 1000 m2 in area has been constructed with its invert in mudstone bedrock, and soil slopes have been lined with lime-stabilised clayey loess silt incorporating a gravel armour layer. The pond outflow takes place via a 2 m high 1.8 m diameter concrete dewatering tower, with a skimmer arrangement to lower the pond by approximately 500 mm between storm events. The overflow water discharges to the main stream above a natural wetland, which will act as a secondary polishing pond, and this is to be enhanced in conjunction with the neighbouring forestry company. Discharge consents specify turbidity and pH as the controlling criteria, and both will be monitored at the settling pond discharge point as well as at the entry to the main stream. Investigations to date indicate that the pH of water exiting from previous underground workings is in the range 6.8 to 7.2, and that acidic drainage will not be an issue with this mine site. No dispersive clays have been identified in assessing the overburden and batter materials, although erosion during storm events is expected and all drains will ultimately be routed through the main settling pond to ensure adequate control of runoff-generated sediment. Reestablishment of vegetation on cut and fill batters remains a priority, and ongoing monitoring will ensure satisfactory long-term performance of the pond system.

In today’s operating environment many conventional cleaner circuits struggle to produce final grade concentrate with acceptable levels of non-sulfide gangue and/or penalty elements. This is primarily due to poor selectivity and the entrainment of gangue, and is further exacerbated by the processing of lower grade ores with more complex mineralogy that require finer grinding for liberation. In new concentrators, the standard approach to cleaner circuit design is to define the number of stages of mechanical cells required to achieve the desired concentrate grade. Residence time is the primary factor to size cells and to determine the number of cells required to attain target recovery. While it is required for recovery, a bank of mechanical cells is not the ideal solution to maximise concentrate grade. Relatively coarse bubble size means slow flotation of fines, requiring long residence times. The combination of long residence times and no froth washing means higher entrainment as the pulp becomes more barren and froth stability decreases down a bank.In recent years, the Jameson Cell technology has been retrofitted into a number of concentrators around the world to solve both cleaner circuit capacity and concentrate grade issues. Jameson Cells have been installed at the head of conventional cleaner circuits to produce final grade concentrate in a single step of flotation using a single cell (referred to here as ‘cleaner scalping’ duty). The experience gained from these installations has provided the platform for the design of improved and simpler cleaner circuits that will perform better and be more robust to operate. This paper analyses traditional cleaner circuit designs and explains the philosophy behind new hybrid cleaner circuits, which use Jameson Cells to produce final concentrate and mechanical cells for a ‘cleaner scavenger’ duty. The advantages of the new cleaner circuit design are demonstrated by a case study from an operating plant. Engineering studies show that the better metallurgical performance can be achieved with less equipment than conventional cleaning designs, reducing capital cost, operating cost, and with more than 30 per cent energy savings.Finally, the paper describes simple modifications to the standard laboratory flotation test procedures which accurately simulate this new cleaner circuit using routine equipment.CITATION:Huynh, L, Araya, R, Seaman, D R, Harbort, G and Munro, P D, 2014. INTRODUCTION A technique is needed to apply the flotation method successfully to apply the flotation method successfully to low grade and complex ore bearing hard-to-float oxide minerals. Thus it is necessary to find a new selective, powerful collector or to develop a new flotation process. Some attempts to use two or more kinds of collectors combined in flotation have been made but the principle of the reaction between the collectors used and the surface of mineral as well as the effect of combined collectors on flotation has not yet been fully understood. As part of the study on the improvement of selective collection in flotation, we have been investigating the flotation of minerals using two kinds of organic reagents, one of which is a conventional collector. We found xanthates were able to adsorb even onto the surface of oxide mineral, with the help of another organic reagent, e.g. a chelate compound (1). Furthermore, a notable effect of combined reagents such as the xanthate-amino acid combination (2) was found on the reagent adsorption phenomena and the collection phenomena, depending on the combination of reagents. The present study was carried out to clarify the effects of adding two kinds of collectors to the collection of mineral in flotation in the following two cases: (1) joint use of xanthate and di-alkyl dithiophosphate for galena collection and (2) joint use of a cationic collector with xanthate for scheelite collection.

The 40 Moz Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea is the worldÆs largest, low-sulfidation, epithermal gold deposit, in terms of contained gold. The deposit has average grades of 2.42 g/t Au (LGL Resources Reserves Update, 2008) and gold is hosted primarily in refractory pyrite. Lihir Island is part of the 150 km long, Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni, alkalic, volcanic island chain located in the New Ireland basin. Five volcanic blocks comprise Lihir; Plio-Pliestocene Huniho, Kinami and Luise volcanic edifices are built on top of remnant Pleistocene Wurtol Wedge and Londolovit Block (Wallace et al, 1983). The Ladolam gold deposit is located in the central portion of the dissected Luise volcanic edifice and is composed of four main orebodies: 1. Minifie, 2. Lienetz, 3. Coastal, and 4. Kapit. An active geothermal system is overprinted on the ore deposit, localised along north-trending lineaments, and is expressed as hot mud pools and fumaroles. The focus of open pit mapping and drill core logging, as part of ongoing PhD research, has been in the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies. The deposit geology is grouped into four main phases: 1. volcano-sedimentary host rocks, 2. porphyry-style biotite alteration and related hydrothermal breccias and veins, 3. epithermal-style breccias and veins, and 4. modern geothermal alteration. Gold is associated with epithermal-style alteration and mineralisation. Ongoing observations of the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies are highlighting differences in the geology and paragenetic histories. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. "The use of the up-to date light alloys and their development are in the sharp ascent especially in transportation industry. In the last years the use of the magnesium alloys for the various purposes was strongly increased. The aim of present research was to study the influence of solidification rate on hot workability and on obtained mechanical properties of AM60 magnesium alloy. The study was also focused on possibility to omit prior homogenisation process which would result in cost reduction. The solidification of gravity cast alloy has been investigated with various methods of the thermal analysis: in situ simple thermal analysis and simultaneous thermal analysis. In order to reveal optimal hot working conditions the deformation behaviour was studied in the temperature range 200-450°C and strain rates between 0.001-lOs-1. Mechanical properties have been studied with tensile and impact toughness testing.IntroductionIn recent years, the increased demand for magnesium alloys has been mainly driven by the need of automotive and transportation industry to reduce the weight, as this is the most important parameter to reduce the energy consumption. Beside their very low weight in comparison to other metals, the magnesium alloys are characterized by good machinability, corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties, and can thus compete with aluminium alloys and for some applications even with steels. Due their decreased workabilty they are typically used as cast alloys, but in recent years also the research of their wrought state has become more extensive [1-7]. Decreased hot workability of magnesium alloys originates from their hexagonal close-packed structure. One of the most popular magnesium alloys with great potential for many applications is AM60 (MgA16Mn), which is predominately used for casting. But its application could be increased if the mechanical properties, could be improved. This can be done by hot working. Namely it is well known that wrought microstructure is characterized by better mechanical properties in comparison to as-cast state. On the other hand due to its low hot workability the homogenization process is required prior hot deformation, which results in increased production costs. Thus the aim of the present research was to study the influence of solidification rate on hot workability of AM60 alloy in order to improve its mechanical properties and to check the possibility of producing near-net-shape casting products omitting homogenisation process by employing small additional deformations after casting. Within the framework of this research the solidification of gravity cast AM60 alloy has been investigated with various methods of the thermal analysis."

Magnetite mines in the Sterling tract, Orange County, N. Y., were operated almost continuously from pre-Revolutionary days until 1923. The Red-Back mine, one of several in this tract, was discovered in 1780; operated briefly in 1880; and abandoned, presumably because the iron ore contained considerable sulfur. The mine is in rough, mountainous country, with altitudes ranging from 500 to 1,100 feet. The magnetite deposit occurs in complex metamorphosed pre-Cambrian formation and is thought to be a replacement of limestone by magnetite. A dip-needle survey, completed in 1916, traced magnetic anomalies for a mile along the outcrop. A preliminary examination of the Red-Back mine was made by W. T. Millar, Bureau of Mines engineer, in December 1942. The Bureau of Mines bored seven diamond-drill holes aggregating 2,727.6 feet during the winter of 1943-44. A zone of magnetite mineralization was intersected in each of the holes.

For developing new technologies, it is important to characterize the microstructure of materials with high spatial resolution at the nanoscale. To achieve high resolution, field emission scanning electron microscopes (FE-SEM) were developed. These microscopes allow working at low accelerating voltage, below 5 kV, to take advantage of the reduction of the interaction volume with accelerating voltage. Furthermore, their higher gun brightness compared to conventional thermo-electronic emitters, allow a probe size at the nanoscale. At low accelerating voltage, the emission volume of backscatter and secondary electron (SE) of the type II signals approach that of SEI signals. However, it is not enough to reach the highest resolution. A magnetic field above the sample improves the spatial resolution by collecting mostly high-resolution signals. In addition, the energy-filtration of the electron signals allows selecting the type of contrast detected: topographic, compositional, or crystallographic. The development of these new technologies permits to extend the imaging capabilities of the SEM towards new nanoscale applications.

Chromium diffusion coatings on commercial Armco iron lead to carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries in and below the coatings. High compressive stresses are introduced into the coating and, as a result, tensile stresses are introduced into the base material below the coating. In coated samples, fatigue cracks form at the grain boundaries below the coating after only a limited portion of the total lifetime (5 to 10 pct). Residual tensile stresses and a stress concentration caused by precipitated carbides seems to be responsible for early crack nucleation. Stage I of Propagation may be divided into two substages: I-a in which the crack Propagates along grain boundaries, and I-b in which the crack propagates along slip boundaries according to a shear mode. In uncoated samples, the cracks form at slip bands after 40 to 50 pct of the total lifetime. In coated samples the Propagation process takes longer than in uncoated samples because of the moderate rate of crack extension until the crack breaks through the coating. The chromium-diffusion coating causes little if any increase in fatigue life. CHROMIUM diffusion is one of the most popular processes used to apply coatings to iron alloys. This popularity stems from the fact that the diffusion treatment is comparatively easy to carry out, and it improves certain surface properties such as corrosion and wear resistance as well as some other properties. Very little effort has been devoted to the investigation of the effect of chromium-diffusion coatings on mechanical properties and particularly on fatigue properties. Since the chromium coating usually represents a small fraction of the total volume of the base material it is generally assumed that the macro properties are dependent principally on the base material rather than the coating. Insofar as fatigue is concerned, there are indications that the fatigue life of the chromium coating is not less than that of the basic material and the fatigue properties are generally not reduced by it.' But chromium diffusion causes drastic structural and chemical changes in the region of the material surface2-4 which introduce additional residual stresses. Such changes must affect fatigue crack nucleation and may sometimes affect the initial stages of propagation. Furthermore, it is conceivable that the secondary stages of the crack propagation could be influenced by some irreversible structural changes in the core of the material, which stem from the long-time heat treatment at high temperatures required to apply the coating. This paper analyses the structural and compositional changes produced in commercial Armco iron by a chromium-diffusion coating and the effect of the coating on fatigue crack initiation and propagation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The investigations were carried out with commercial Armco iron. The chemical composition of the iron, the number of specimens tested, the grain size produced during chromizing and heat treating, and the thickness and microhardness of the chromized layers are shown in Table I. Samples were chromized by a gas diffusion process. The temperature and time of the diffusion coating process were chosen according to a previous grain growth study. It had been found that at a temperature of 970°C and a holding time of between 3 and 9 hr there are practically no changes in grain size. To describe the grain size more accurately the ASTM method5 was supplemented by a statistical analysis of the mean volume diameter as outlined by Fullman6 and The The mean volume diameter was deter- mined from D = p/2m where D is the mean volume diameter, and m is the mean reciprocal value of grain diameters as seen on the micrograph. The shape and the size of the asymmetrical sample, see Fig. 1, were chosen so as to facilitate the study of fatigue crack initiation. Before coating, the samples were machined and the surface of the groove was polished. After chromizing, the two side surfaces were machined and polished so as to retain the coating only on the top surface of the groove. Residual stress in the chromized layer was measured on the top of the grooved section of the specimen after the diffusion process. The inclined incident X-ray beam procedure was used.9'10 The computations were performed with the initial assumption of a zero surface normal stress component. "INTRODUCTION Shaft mines, coal and noncoal alike, have a common hoisting problem that remains largely unsolved - how to obtain a mechanical device that will suspend a cage or skip in a mine shaft if the hoisting rope should break or become detached from the cage or skip and that will function effectively under all conditions of service. Safety catches, or safety dogs, as they are commonly named, are installed on nearly all mine cages and many skips operating in American mines, but often, if the hoisting rope breaks, the cage or skip falls to the bottom of the shaft in spite of safety devices, causing much property damage and often fatalities.Available information relative to safety catches for mine cages and skips, desirable characteristics of safety catches and methods of testing safety catches to determine whether they are functioning correctly has been assembled in this publication for the convenience of those responsible for the safe operation of mine cages end skips and, more particularly, to focus attention on the need for a device that actually will stop and suspend a falling cage or skip under all conditions of use and do it without killing or maiming the occupants."

his paper discusses how the following formation characteristics can be determined mathematically from drill-stem test pressure charts: true formation pressures, effective permeability of the entire section tested, well productivities, wellbore damage, and possible detection of barriers (faults, pinchouts, etc.). This paper also presents a practical method for im-mediate determination of eflective permeability and well-bore damage from successful double shut-in pressure tests. A list of recommendations for improving the reliability of drill-stem rest pressures is also presented. INTRODUCTION A drill-stem test is a temporary completion designed to sample the formation fluid and to establish the possibility of commercial production. Early pressure recording devices were used merely to verify proper operation of the testing tool. Until recently the accuracy of the pressure gauges has been insufficient for any reliable quantitative use of the recorded pressures. In view of the need for more reliable formation evaluation and as a result of the recent interest in exploration work employing the concept of hydrodynamic en-trapment,1,2,3,4 better pressure recording gauges are now in use. These devices can record pressure within 1 per cent above 1,000 psig and can detect differential pressures as low as 1/2 psig. In addition to formation pressure, several other reservoir characteristics can be determined from DST charts; namely, well productivity, formation permeability, wellbore damage, and the possible existence of bar- riers (faults, pinchouts, changes in permeability, etc.). This paper presents a practical method to interpret DST pressure charts for formation pressures and many other reservoir properties, a method that has been developed in analyzing approximately 4,000 DST charts during the last five years. The techniques used are a composite of published articles on drill-stem testing5,6, together with well-known pressure build-up analysis methods. THEORY It has been shown7,8 that the following equation may be used for analysis of pressure build-up curves: Po - Pw = 162.6 qu/kh log ( to + ?/?) .....(1) When this equation is applied to the curves obtained in drill-stem testing, the assumptions and boundary con-ditions are more nearly realized than in conventional flow and build-up tests on producing wells. Zak and Griffen9 have recently discussed in detail the use of this equation in analyzing DST charts. One of the problems with DST curves is the lack of reservoir data for precise analysis. Therefore, it is necessary to develop empirical rules and field methods for analyzing DST charts in quantity. For this reason, the empirical methods presented in this paper have been developed, and their derivation is found in Appendices A and B. METHOD USED FOR ACCURATE READING OF DRILL-STEM TEST CHARTS In order to apply the pressure build-up theory to DST charts, it is necessary to obtain a digitized expression for the pressure and time data recorded by the pressure gauge. Modern automobile bodies consist of different materials, e.g. aluminium alloys and high strength steels. Mechanical joining, e.g. clinching, is very suitable for joining aluminium and steel sheet. But clinching needs a sufficient ductility, which is no longer supplied by high strength steels. Laser-assisted clinching has been shown, to be able to join aluminium and high strength steel sheet successfully. Thereby the steel sheets were heated locally for short times to increase their ductility. Due to the thermal contact between steel and aluminium sheet the aluminium alloys also achieve a local short-time heat treatment. This fact may cause a significant impact, as aluminium sheet in automobile bodies is often used in T4 (or similar) condition and later artificially aged during the paint bake cycle. Aluminium alloys 6016 and 6181 have been short-time heat treated with heating rates up to some 100 K/s. Precipitation and dissolution processes have been monitored in-situ by calorimetry. Mechanical properties have been investigated on as well as after short-time heat treatment by deformation dilatometry. The results show, that suitable short-time annealing parameters during laser-assisted clinching can increase ductility and at the same time act as retrogression for aluminium sheets, resulting in increased strength after aging.

ONE of the most important contributions to the art of electrolytic zinc production-has been the aluminum cathode. This has been used in all major production: since its commercial development in 1916. The literature is replete with important contributions, some of which may have been replaced by better ones, but thus far there appears no other metal to take the place of aluminum as cathode material. Credit for this innovation goes to Sherard Cowper Coles, of England. When experi-menting on the extraction of-zinc from Broken Hill ore at Hayle, Cornwall, in 1893, he introduced the aluminum cathode, and in 1895 obtained British Patent-No. 20073. The reason for this dominant position of aluminum as cathode mate-rial in zinc sulphate electrolytes is its unique surface, to which electro-deposited metals usually do not tightly adhere. The metal must be of high purity for best results. It is possible to develop a starting-sheet method by which thin electro-deposited sheets of cathode zinc are made and stripped from a smooth aluminum plate. Such thin sheets of cathode zinc may be used as arc tine copper sheets in standard electrolytic copper-refinery practice. However, complications arise because of extreme warping of the zinc starting sheet after a .few hours of deposition, and thus special arrangements must be made to compensate for this abnormality.

Staznless steels ave rrzuch less seuel-ely attacketl by zinc lapov than by molten zinc systems. To determine the applicubility of stainless steels fov equipment items which would be exposed only to zinc vapor, the corvosion resistance of several stainless steels to zinc vapor was investigated in 500-hr- exposuves at 900° C. Two austenilic stainless steels, Types 304 and 3-17, suffered severe intergranular attack. Loss of nickel from these steels and micro-probe crnalyses indicated the probable formation of low-melting zinc-rich phases. Good vesistance to attack by zinc vapor, as determined by metallo-9-rpaphic excr)rtination and physical testing, Loas exhibited by Type 405 stainless steel, a jevvitic steel. Type 440C stainless steel, a tnartensitic steel, although suffering considevable loss in weight, was not structurally weakened. At Argonne National Laboratory liquid zinc and zinc-rich alloys are being employed as solvent media in pyrometallurgical processes under development for recovering and purifying discharged reactor-fuel materials.' Because of the high solubility of most metals in liquid zinc,' there are few metals which can serve as container materials for liquid zinc at temperatures much above the melting point. The poor corrosion resistance of the common metals and alloys to molten zinc has been discussed by Eldred.3 DeKany, Lavendel, and Burris4 tested some of the less-common alloys of the nonrefractory metals and found that they also have poor resistance to attack by liquid zinc and Zn-Mg solutions. Of the metallic materials, only some of the refractory metals such as tantalum, tungsten, and molybdenum and their alloys have shown resistance to attack by liquid zinc.4-7 In the process-development work at Argonne National Laboratory, tantalum and tungsten vessels have been used to hold liquid-zinc alloys. These vessels are housed in stainless-steel equipment, principally to permit maintenance of an inert atmosphere and operation at various pressures. In this experimental work, it has often been observed that Type 304 stainless steel suffers little attack by zinc vapor at temperatures up to about 800 °C. In contrast, severe attack occurs in areas where zinc condenses as a liquid. The extent of attack by zinc vapor on several stainless steels was investigated because there are possible useful applications of stainless steel for equipment items which would be exposed only to attack by zinc vapor. The U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (IOS), U.K., conducted a sidescan sonar survey of the U. S. Exclusive Economic Zone in the Gulf of Mexico from August 7 to October 22, 1985. A reconnaissance-scale view of 120,000 square nautical miles of sea floor seaward of the shelf-edge was obtained by using the GLORIA (Geologic Long-Range Inclined Asdic) sidescan sonar system. After these data were merged with GLORIA data from an earlier survey (1982) of the northwestern Gulf, a preliminary mosaic was constructed at a scale of 1:375,000. From this mosaic, we can identify morphologic features and interpret sea-floor processes. The extensive deformation of the continental slope seaward of Texas and Louisiana by salt tectonics has resulted in a complex pattern of basins and salt dome highs. One continuous meandering channel was identified in this portion of the Gulf, extending from the shelf edge to the Sigsbee Abyssal Plain. Bottom currents have reworked the sediments in this channel's levees seaward of the Sigsbee Escarpment, the seaward edge of the salt front, suggesting that this channel may no longer be actively transporting sediment. Talus appears to lie along the base of the Sigsbee Escarpment, suggesting that erosion and deposition is occur- ring along this front. Three other discontinuous channel systems can be identified on the mosaic and appear to have contributed sediments to the deep Gulf.

Goethite ore are the third most abundant source of iron. The overwhelming part of these ore is represented by low-grade varieties which cannot be used in iron and steel industry without preliminary beneficiation. Biomass is a renewable solid fuel, which is feasible for the substitution of coke and coal in the manufacturing due to its lower contents of harmful elements and abundant raw material sources. Utilization of biomass in iron ore sintering process as heating agent and reducing agent contributes to energy conservation and emission reduction. The biomass was mixed together with goethite ore for roasting process to investigate the effects of reduction roasting. The results show that the goethite ore is dramatically reduced and magnetized into maghemite by biomass with the biomass dosage less than 20% and the roasting temperature below 650 oC. When the goethite ore roasted with biomass, the magnetization values could be enhanced more than two orders of magnitude, meets the standard of magnetic separation, which could significantly reduce the iron beneficiation cost. Historically, most investigations of biogeochemical cycling in acid rock drainage systems involved synoptic sampling over longer time periods (one sample per week or month) or intensive time series studies over a few hours or days. However, many important episodic loading events, such as seasonal meltwater and storm events occur on timescales that are rarely observed by these traditional sampling approaches. Monitoring these transient processes, which may contribute the bulk of the annual metal loading, is essential for accurate assessment in acid rock drainage areas. Recent work also has demonstrated dramatic diel (24 hour cycle) variations in trace metal concentrations in response to diel changes in temperature, pH, oxygen, and photochemical cycling (Brick and Moore, 1996; Nimick et al, in prep). To characterise a system that may respond to diel, seasonal, and episodic events, a monitoring program must sample at a frequency that captures the details of these major forcing events. We developed two novel instruments, the Zn-DigiScan and the DigiSampler to examine low and high frequency temporal changes in acid rock drainage areas. The Zn-DigiScan is a battery powered real time in situ chemical analyser designed for long-term deployments with hourly analyses of Zn. Stream physical parameters (temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, etc) were measured every 15 minutes with a water quality sonde. The DigiSampler was developed for the long-term daily sampling of biogeochemically active elements and can take either discrete samples or samples integrated over 24 hours. The DigiSampler collects 2 ml samples in a Teflon coil which are separated by 0.2 ml nitrogen bubbles. The sample coil is returned to lab and the 2 ml samples are diluted 1:10 and analysed for trace metals by ICP-MS. Initial results from a three-day deployment at Fisher Creek, MT, USA have successfully demonstrated the ability of the Zn-DigiScan to record Zn concentrations at levels below 100 ¦g/L. Zinc concentrations measured at 30 minute intervals in Fisher Creek showed a diel cycle with low values of ~25 ¦g/L in the late afternoon and increasing to ~60 ¦g/L by early morning. Zn concentrations were inversely related to temperature and pH, suggesting that temperature and pH dependent adsorption was the main factor controlling diel Zn fluctuations. Initial deployment of the DigiSampler also was successful, revealing diel cycles in Zn, Cu, and Mn. Comparison of trace metal samples collected by the DigiSampler showed good agreement with samples collected by an Isco automated water sampler, demonstrating that the DigiSampler can collect clean samples for trace metal analysis at the low ¦g/L range.

Devido às influências deletérias do fósforo sobre as propriedades do aço e os teores cada vez mais altos de fósforo no minério, a remoção do mesmo através do processo de desfosforação do ferro-gusa ganha cada vez mais importância. Este trabalho tem como objetivo a avaliação termodinâmica de misturas a base de CaOFeO utilizadas no processo de desfosforação de ferro-gusa. A avaliação termodinâmica foi realizada através dos softwares termodinâmicos, ThermoCalc e FactSage, os quais mostraram-se eficazes na determinação da concentração de fósforo de equilíbrio no metal, fases presentes e temperatura de fusão das misturas.
