Throughout the 1960's and 1970's world trade grew rapidly, reaching a peak of USS1.8 trillion in 1980. Since then the world recession of the early 1980's shrunk trade to about US$1.6 trillion. The reduced cash flow to developing economies made it difficult to service their huge international debts, Nowadays lenders are reluctant to grant Third World countries additional credit. The shortage of export financing, plus trade barriers set up by developed countries, is further inhibiting international trade. Therefore, countries are turning to new and creative alternatives to financing imports of consumer as well as of investment goods. Non-cash transactions, including different forms of countertrade, are rapidly growing alternatives to traditional trade financing patterns. In 1983 about 30% of international trade, or close to US$600 bill ion, were presumably done by non-cash transactions, up from barely 2% in 1976. By year 2000, half the world trade is likely to be conducted on basis of barter. As of mid-1984 some 88 nations used countertrade regularly and Governments of at least 15 Latin American countries had arranged or mandated commercial countertrade.

Some ferro-silicon furnaces have heat-recovery equipment. Here, the recovery of electric energy from the off-gases can be increased by increasing the off-gas temperature. This is easily done by reducing the amount of air which usually is mixed into the?off?gas to cool the gas mixture. If the off-gas becomes too hot problems with severe fouling or clogging of the gas channels close to the furnace is observed. The result is irregular stops to clean the off-gas channels. The paper focuses on the nature of the clogging phenomena and some of the ways to avoid clogging. A detailed experimental study was carried out at the Elkem Thamshavn Plant. Theoretical studies were performed to understand the particle deposition, turbulent multiphase fluid flow and off gas combustion in the off-gas channels. The study has resulted in reduced clogging.

This paper highlights the importance of pulp aeration in the selective separation of chalcopyrite from chalcopyrite/pyrite mixtures of varying pyrite content (20-80 wt.%). Laboratory batch flotation studies and oxygen demand tests were performed to predict the optimum amount of air required for the selective separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite. The pulp oxygen demand was shown to increase with increasing pyrite content but decrease with time as more air is introduced into the system. Complementary batch flotation tests showed significant improvement in chalcopyrite flotation under moderate pre-aeration of the pulp. However, a continuous decrease of chalcopyrite flotation was observed under highly aerated conditions. The amount of air required to achieve maximum chalcopyrite flotation recovery correlated positively with the mass fraction of pyrite in the pulps. The greater the wt.% of pyrite in the chalcopyrite/pyrite pulp, the longer the aeration time required. The optimum aeration time was established as the time before which the oxygen consumption rate constant reaches a bottom plateau. Surface analysis (XPS) indicated that the continuous decrease in pyrite recovery observed with increasing aeration time was due to the formation of more iron oxy/hydroxide on its surfaces, the same species accounting for the decrease in Cp recovery after prolonged aeration.

The discovery of this asphaltum was made by S. H. Gilson, of Salt Lake, and since then the material has borne the local name of Gilsonite. So far as I have been able to ascertain, however, the first published notice of this discovery was made by Prof. W. P. Blake in the Engineering arid Mining Journal, of December 26, 1885, where he names the new mineral Uintahite, from the place of its discovery, the Uintah Mountains in eastern Utah. The priority of publication and the geographical fitness of the name will probably secure its acceptance by mineralogists.* The following is Prof. Blake's article. In the month of September last, a sample of peculiar asphalt was received for examination, and recently when in Provo, Utah, I had the opportunity of seeing a considerable quantity brought in from the Uintah Mountains. It is obtained in masses several inches in diameter, and apparently free from mechanically disseminated impurities. It breaks with a conchoidal fracture, is very brittle, and is readily reduced to powder in a mortar. Hardness, 2 to 25. Gravity, 1.065 to 1.070. Color, black, brilliant, and lustrous; streak and powder, a rich brown. It is a non-conductor of electricity, and is electrically excited by friction.

O desenvolvimento de aços de alta resistência associados à boa tenacidade é uma alternativa para redução de custos na construção e instalação de oleodutos e gasodutos, devido à possibilidade de redução da espessura dos tubos sem que seu desempenho seja afetado. Os aços da classe API (American Petroleum Institute) pertencem ao grupo de aços ARBL (Alta Resistência Baixa Liga) que possuem as combinações desejáveis de resistência à tração, ductilidade, tenacidade e soldabilidade. No processo de laminação a quente o comportamento dos aços está diretamente relacionado aos parâmetros de processamento como temperatura, deformação, taxa de deformação, taxa de resfriamento e tempo entre passes. O controle desses parâmetros é importante na determinação da microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas do material. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar o comportamento termomecânico do aço API 5L X80M–PSL2 através de ensaios de torção a quente isotérmicos. Através desses ensaios serão determinados a tensão e deformação de pico, tensão e deformação crítica e a porcentagem de amaciamento do material.

O presente trabalho tem como por objetivo a busca por uma solução eletrolítica capaz de eletropolir, eficientemente, amostras de ferro puro (>99,8% Fe). A finalidade de se utilizar o ferro é devido o interesse em suas propriedades biocompativeis e a sua possível aplicação biomédica, sendo utilizado em dispositivos biodegradáveis. Ligas à base de Fe, Mg e Zn estão ganhando importância devido às vantagens que elas oferecem, em comparação com as tradicionais (AISI316L, L605), sendo a capacidade, de se degradarem a principal caracteristica. A escolha do eletropolimento, como técnica de modificação de superfície, deve-se a sua capacidade em polir o material tornando o seu relevo mais homogêneo, garantindo um pré-tratamento adequado ao material em diversas aplicações, como por exemplo o tratamento com o plasma. Um dos grandes diferenciais desta técnica é que pode ser utilizada em materiais com geometria complexa. Foram realizados testes utilizando um grupo de 4 soluções presentes na literatura e analisados os seus efeitos em amostras de ferro puro. Com os resultados obtidos pelas análises de Microscopia Óptica, Microscópio de Força Atômica e Ângulo de Contato foi possível verificar que a solução 2C obteve o eletropolimento mais efetivo, apresentando assim as características desejadas.

Field instrumentation was installed to monitor ground and lining behaviour during and after construction of the Mount Shaughnessy Tunnel (Rogers Pass Short Tunnel) in Canada. The instrumentation was placed in a soft ground section of the tunnel at its crossing with the Trans Canada Highway. The tunnel was excavated through a dense bouldery soil. Presentation of the field data and inter- pretation of the tunnel performance from a geological-geotechnical point of view form the basis of this paper. The loss of ground due to the tunnel excavation was found to be exceptionally small. This has been attributed to the unusually high strength and stiffness of the host soil. Evaluation using the Boundary Element Method, together with a simplified analytical technique, were applied to assess the relevant soil parameters and their influence on the tunnel performance.

To establish a process for the electrochemical recovery of rare earth elements from used magnet scraps, the electrochemical formation of RE-Ni alloys in molten NaCl-KCl-RECl3 salt at 973 K was investigated. Cyclic voltammetry and open-circuit potentiometry indicated the formation of several phases of RE-Ni alloys. The formation potential for each RE-Ni alloy phase was determined from the results of scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction of alloy samples prepared by potentiostatic electrolysis of a Ni plate electrode at various potentials. The optimum electrolysis conditions for the separation of Nd, Dy, and Pr are discussed.

EARLIER investigations of the potential-drop-ratio method of electrical prospecting have indicated that under suitable conditions this method is well adapted to the location of formation boundaries in stratified ground. A description of this development was given several years ago by H. Lundberg and Th. Zuschlag.1 The curves published by these authors for the potential-drop-ratio variation above a horizontal contact indicated a definite relation of the position of the curve peak to the depth of the interface. The theory underlying this relation was subsequently studied by Z. Mitera in greater detail,2 and the theoretical deductions were compared with the results of tank experiments. The investigations available at this writing were confined to studies of horizontal formation boundaries. It is the purpose of this paper to extend the scope of the previous work to the problem of dipping layers. THEORY Consider the case of three media of different resistivities, whose interfaces are not parallel. If a point-source is located in one of these interfaces, its images do not lie in a straight line, but on the circumference of a circle whose center is at the hypothetical junction of the interfaces. R. F. Aldredge3 determined the relation that exists between the degrees of dip of the two interfaces and the distances between the various images and the point for which the potential is to be found. As seen in Fig. I, three media of resistivities po, pi, and p2 are involved, and the source I is located at the interface of the media (po) and (pi). The perpendicular depth of the lower interface is h,? is the dip, R is the distance between source I and potential point P, and r is the distance between the images and that point. To distinguish between images lying above the ground interface and those below, the notation "odd" and "even" images will be employed; images below the ground interface will be termed "odd" and those above "even." A good understanding of the hardness of ore being handled and processed in a mining operation can significantly improve operational efficiencies by providing valuable data to support decision-making through the mining value chain (drilling, blasting, comminution). This study presents the results from the application of Machine Learning (ML) to predict rock hardness using various geophysical and geochemical features. Core samples from a mine site were logged using a multi-sensor core logging system. Measurements including ultrasonic p-wave and s-wave velocity, elemental concentration via portable XRF, and Leeb Hardness, were measured every 2 cm along the length of the core. The ML model was set up to predict the Leeb Hardness using the elemental concentrations and ultrasonic velocities as predictors. The Leeb Hardness values were grouped into three bins and used as a classification target for the ML models. Various ML models, including linear regression, support vector machines, decision tree, XGBoost, Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbors, and Naïve Bayes were tested. The model performance demonstrated that the Random Forest and XGBoost models produced the highest accuracy of 74-91%. Random forest and XGBoost were then selected to perform regression models to estimate a Leeb hardness value rather than a hardness class. These models were able to estimate the Leeb hardness value by 4.57-4.87 % error.

INTRODUCTION The shovelling of rock in stopes is still a basic and important operation in many gold mines in the removal of gold-bearing rock from the stopes. There is, however, little factual knowledge of the factors which influence the the rates of energy expenditure and work output, and of the way in which variations in these factors, individually or in combination, affect the mechanical efficiency of the mine workers. What for example is the influence of different rates of shovelling, shovel loads and distances of throw? How does stope width and dip of the stope affect the mechanical efficiency of men shovelling rock? Recently a simple physiological test was introduced into the gold mining industry for classifying Bantu recruits into those capable of hard, moderate and light work. If this test is used to select only those Bantu mine workers who are capable of hard work for the task of shovelling rock in stopes then the rate of energy expenditure which could be expected from these men is 1.5 litres/min for the entire period of the shift. With an adequate knowledge of the influence of the various factors which affect the rate of energy expenditure of men shovelling rock in stopes it would be possible to set work standards for Bantu mine workers in stopes. This should be done in terms of the rate of shovelling, the shovel load and the distance of throw for any combination of width of stope, dip of stope, condition of foot wall and grade of rock in such a way that the resultant energy expenditure would be the 'optimum' that could be expected from the men but would be within their capacities for physical work of an endurance nature (that is, 1. 5 litres/min from the 'average' Bantu mine worker). Work standards could thereby be determined for the different stopes of a mine on a sound and systematic basis. In order to supply the information required a study was carried out by the Human Sciences Laboratory in which the work output and energy expenditures (in terms of oxygen consumption in litres/min) were measured on six highly trained Bantu mine workers under the following conditions: (a) rates of shovelling of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10 shovels per minute. (b) loads of from 9 to 18 lb on the shovel. (c) distances of throw from 8 to 20 ft. (d) stope width of 28 in., 42 in. and 72 in. (e) dip of stopes of 0°, 15° and 30°. (f) rough and smooth footwalls and various grades of rock size. This paper gives the main results of practical importance of this study. Method The experiments were designed and conducted in conjunction with the Work Study Department of one certain underground conditions such as variable stope widths, stope angle, etc., were made available in a mine Surface Training School and suitable subjects were selected from the large number of labourers being put through the training school. Subjects Bantu recruits who had returned to the mine for a new contract and who had previous underground experience on shovelling were considered to be suitable as subjects for the experiments. The particulars of the subjects are given in Table I. After the technique was mastered, the men started shovelling rock and were trained for at least four hours per day to work at the higher shovelling rates. Training was continued for three weeks to enable the subjects to achieve a reasonable degree of physical training and conditioning. Shovelling method In both the kneeling and standing positions the subjects faced the pile of rock, grasped the shovel in the accepted manner and pushed the blade of the shovel into the base of the pile of rock, sliding the blade between the rock and the concrete floor. In the standing position (72 in. wide stope) the back leg assisted in the movement by pushing the knee against the back of the hand holding the shovel handle. Managers are demanding efficient use of their resources and part of this demand is leading to the idea of integrated audits for Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S), quality and the environment. It is possible to construct audits which test the compliance in this area with standards established by management systems and it may be that such an integrated audit of a site could reduce the time of auditing and be equally effective as three separate audits. However, this is only a maybe. To do an audit on all three aspects when they are not fully integrated results in more time wastage than doing three separate audits. But organisations are not structured around the audit process (some financial managers may query this statement). The organisational management systems are put in place to achieve the organisational goals - presumably in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

Ageing tests on a crushed Cu-porphyry ore were conducted to assess the impact of sample oxidation on flotation performance. The objective of the testwork was to simulate ageing of ore that would be blasted through block caving but not milled for possibly several months. Ageing was performed in specially designed columns, using site and deionised water to keep the samples moist over the entire ageing period. Samples from each ageing interval (0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 months) were examined for physical and metallurgical changes resulting from the ageing process through chemical analyses, size analyses, and batch flotation tests.

The Bureau of Mines used a statistical approach to evaluate the effects of temperature, current density, and composition of the electrolyte on the purity of boron prepared by electrolysis of a fused mixture of boric oxide in potassium fluoborate. The quadratic equation which best fits the data was calculated for a temperature of 650° to 850° C, a cathode current density of 40 to 1,150 amp/ft2,and a boric oxide content of 0.3 to 7.1 molal. The best products, better than 95 percent boron, were obtained when the current density was less than 2 amp/ft2 and the boric oxide content was less than 2 molal.

In constructing the NORAD Combat Operations Center, controlled blasting techniques were employed to achieve smooth walls and to avoid shattering the rock beyond excavation lines. Extraordinary measures were taken to stabilize the rock to permanently preserve the openings. Rock stabilization was accomplished by means of reinforced concrete and gunite linings, rock boltings, installation of chain-link fabric, and epoxy resin and cement grouting. A particular zone of weakness at B vital location was supported by exceptionally thick reinforced concrete lining, rock bolts, and cement grout.

The Central Extended Orebody is located within the Cracow Goldfield approximately 360 km northwest of Brisbane and approximately 220 km west of Bundaberg. It is an epithermal gold deposit hosted by the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian Camboon Andesite. The lode was mined by open cut methods and produced 170 458 tonnes of ore at 5.62 g/t gold.The geology of the rit is relatively simple, comprising two rock types, trachyandesite and rhyolite which have been sub-divided into several units. The trachyandesite is sub-divided into three rock types: brecciated trachyandesite which is the most widespread, hydraulically fractured trachyandesite hosts the mineralisation and the third sub-unit is chloritised hydraulically fractured trachyandesite and has no associated mineralisation. The mineralisation is confined to quartz veins in hydraulically fractured trachyandesite. Several phases of brecciation and subsequent quartz and quartz/adularia vein injection are evident although not all phases are mineralised. Two rhyolite dykes intrude the trachyandesite one is monolithic, the other is sub-divided into hydraulically fractured rhyolite (barren), silicified rhyolite and auto-brecciated rhyolite.

In 1969, Queensland Mines Limited obtained two large Prospecting Authorities in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia. The Nabarlek uranium deposit containing some 12 000 t of U308 was discovered on one of these in June 1970. Mining and stockpiling of this deposit were completed in 1979 and processing to yellowcake, which commenced in June 1980, is expected to occupy an 8-10 year period. The continuation of exploration, essential for the company to become a longer- term producer, was inhibited in 1972 by a Federal Government "freeze" on exploration in Aboriginal Reserves in the Northern Territory. Subsequently, the procedure for explorers to gain access to exploration areas in Aboriginal land was radically changed by the proclamation of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976. As a result of this Act and the associated administrative policies adopted by Governments, Queensland Mines Limited has not yet regained access to the exploration areas it formally held in the early 1970's.

Quite apart from economic considerations, the following performance parameters must be considered when selecting an explosive for a particular blasting operation. 1. total energy yield/kg, and more particularly, strain energy/kg and bubble energy/kg of charge 2. charge weight/m of blasthole 3. sensitivity of the charge 4. water resistance of the charge The effective division of an explosive's total energy into strain energy (SE) and bubble energy (BE) is explained as is the influence of each energy component on blast results. Because some rocks require a high strain energy for effective breakage, while others are most satisfactorily fragmented by bubble energy, values of SE and BE are more meaningful than those of total energy. Unfortunately, our extensive knowledge of the effects of certain variables on total energy has not yet been completely supplanted by the influence of these variables on SE and BE values. The effect of alkali sulfates in promoting the sul-fation of nickel and copper in a bulk sulfide flota -tion concentrate by fluidized bed roasting has been studied in the laboratory, and it was shown that the various alkali sulfates promote sulfation to approximately the same extent. The sulfation of a mixture of synthetically prepared iron and nickel oxide and of nickel ferrite has also been studied. Nickel sulfation was promoted by high ratios of Fe:Ni and by the presence of sodium sulfate. THE work described in this paper was a continuation of earlier studies into the role of alkali sulfates in promoting the sulfation roasting of nickel sulfides1,2 in an endeavor to determine how the system was affected by the presence of compounds of iron and copper. The earlier work1 showed that, in the sulfation of NiO at 680°C, the reaction was limited by the formation of an impermeable film of nickel sulfate on the oxide surface. The relative effect of the various alkali sulfates in promoting nickel sulfation varied in the order: Li > Na >Cs > Rb > K A study of alkali sulfate/ nickel sulfate interactions at high temperatures showed that the promoting action was due to the fact that the nickel sulfate product layer sintered and agglomerated only when the more active additives were present. This resulted in the formation of discontinuities in the nickel sulfate layer so that diffusion of the sulfating gases to the NiO surface was no longer impeded and the reaction could proceed to completion. A similar explanation was used for the observation that sodium and lithium sulfates promote the oxidation of NiS to NiO at temperatures below 750°C since small amounts of nickel sulfate were formed during oxidation.2 It was of interest to study the effect of alkali sulfates on the sulfate roasting of a sulfide flotation concentrate which is typical of material treated commercially. In order to control temperature it is essential to roast sulfides in a fluidized bed and this technique was therefore used, although the batchwise operation of a small-scale laboratory reactor does not reproduce all conditions which prevail in full-scale continuous plant. The results obtained are therefore only comparative, and cannot be used for predicting the optimum conditions for metal extraction. The sulfation of synthetically prepared mixed oxides of nickel + copper and nickel + iron and of nickel ferrite was also studied to evaluate the relative effects of alkali sulfates with more complex systems. SULFATION ROASTING OF A SULFIDE FLOTATION CONCENTRATE The bulk sulfide flotation concentrate used in this work contained 7.92 pct Ni, 1.74 pct Cu, 35.66 pct Fe, and 31.28 pct S. The sulfide minerals present in order of abundance were pyrrhotite FeS, pyrite FeS2, pentlandite (FeNi)S, and chalcopyrite CuFeS2. Two samples described as coarse and fine were used. The coarse sample, which was a flotation concentrate (58 pct plus 300 mesh), was ground to 100 pct minus 350 mesh to produce the fine sample. Before roasting, the sample of sulfide concentrate was agglomerated by wetting witli a solution of the alkali sulfate (or water), thoroughly mixing, and drying at 110°C. This gave a cake which was gently crushed and screened, the -18 +100 mesh fraction being used for fluidized bed roasting. A similar-size fraction had been used by the authors in pilot plant work with a 4-in.-diam fluidized bed reactor.' In this work it was found that the molar ratio of additive to the total iron + nickel + copper content of the sulfide sample should be adjusted to a value of approximately 0.06, as this was the optimum amount necessary for nickel sulfation. Experimental. The fluidized bed reactor consisted of a quartz tube approximately 60 cm long and 30 mm in diameter resting in a vertical tube furnace. The sulfide bed (30 g) was supported on a bed of -4 +12 mesh quartz particles 3 cm high, which rested on a sintered quartz disc welded to the tube. The temperature of the furnace was controlled with a variable transformer to give a final bed temperature of 680°C. The bed was fluidized with air or mixtures of air + 10 pct v/v SO2, at a total apparent gas velocity of 60 to 65 cm per sec at 680°C.
