The thematic mapper (TM) aboard Landsat II records image data at seven wavelength intervals or bands. Three record the visible region; three record reflected IR energy. A false color image combining bands 7, 4 and 2 rendered as red, green and blue respectively provides maximum discrimination of rock types in arid regions. Structural analyses and interpretation defines regional structures, large volcano-tectonic features intrusive complexes, all which localize mineralization. Special digital processing using the ratio: Band 3 / Band 1 can identify limonites and other iron minerals. The ratio: Band 5/ Band 7 identifies clays and alunite. These ratio images show features and patterns of hydrothermal mineral systems: ?patterns of sulfide and alteration zoning in large porphyry systems, and zones of strong silica, quartz-alunite-illite, and pyrite-sericite in epithermal centers. Thus, digitally processed Landsat TM images are a cost effective and rapid means to recognize altered areas and define targets for large mineralized systems.

"In 2006, a Canadian steel maker embarked on an ambitious initiative to become “Best in Class in Energy Management”. This initiative provides the framework for this paper, with some augmentation from other energy management projects carried out by Hatch. The initiative focused on identifying energy/GHG management improvements leading to low-cost implementation of energy savings or GHG emission reduction. The key components of the approach were:• Review site energy management practices and benchmark internationally.• Review best technical practices and benchmark against public energy intensity data.• Conducted a site-wide Energy Assessment and physical review of operating areas.• Facilitation of on site-workshops with staff to prioritize savings opportunities, as well as identify and remove implementation barriers.• Development of an Energy Management Action Plan for implementation of improvements.Most organizations can produce, with relative ease, a list of ideas for saving energy, implementing them is the challenge. This paper addresses these issues as well as the profitability of the energy efficiency improvements and the consequences for GHG emissions.IntroductionWhen one of the authors was an undergraduate engineering student at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, the technical drawing instructor made a statement that was both humorous, and mildly profound. He claimed that the most successful engineer is one who is both lazy and diligent. Lazy, in the sense that the engineer is constantly on the lookout for an easier, more efficient, way to do something. Diligent, in the sense that the engineer will work tirelessly to come up with a good technical solution for the easier way. This paper, somewhat of an anomaly in a compilation of technical proceedings, hopes to break the mould a little, and to show a “lazy-diligent” way of reducing the carbon emissions from an industrial facility, using a steel plant as an example."

In the course of the investigation by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station at Rolla, Mo., on the beneficiation of the low-grade manganese ores of the country, some samples from the Cuyuna District, Linn., have been examined. The work was done under the direction of W. H. Coghill, supervising engineer of the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station. Joseph and Kinney in writing about the relative importance of Minnesota deposits of low-grade ore compared to the total reserves say: "***It has been estimated that 26 to 35 million tons of ore contain 5 to 35 per cent of manganese, and the total domestic tonnage is from 75 to 48 million tons. The mean of these values is 30.5 million and 42 million tons, so it is seen that about 75 per cent of the reserves are in Minnesota." The manganese-bearing ores of the Cuyuna district maybe roughly grouped into two classes. The most abundant ore is of the low-silica, low-manganese, and high-phosphorus type called brown are. The other type is the so-called black ore, which is characterized by a higher manganese and silica content and by a lowe phosphorus analysis than the brown ore. As a general rule the brown ore carries less than 10 per cent of manganese while the black ore contains about 15 per cent and sometimes as high as 22 per cent of manganese.

Low-carbon shales from 65 deposits and 11 sources of coal-mine waste in western Oregon and Washington were tested in a rotary kiln for their suitability as raw material for expanded aggregate. Shales from 41 sources bloated enough to produce crushed, expanded aggregates, weighing less than 65 pounds per cubic foot in the preliminary tests. The samples were judged on the basis of processing qualities, physical properties, and size and uniformity of the source. Nine low-carbon shale deposits and three coal-mine waste sources were selected for more extensive bloating tests and for examination of the expanded aggregates in concrete shapes. Composite samples from these 12 sources and from 2 commercial operations, when processed for testing in concrete shapes, had bulk densities ranging from 37.S to 72.9 pounds per cubic foot. Damp-cured concrete shapes made with these aggregates had bulk densities ranging from S6 to 119 pounds per cubic foot, and all but three of the lightweight concretes had crushing strengths ranging from 3,270 to 6,810 p.s.i. Properties of the lightweight concretes were compared with those of concrete shapes made with commercial aggregates, and with sand and gravel.

Many of the transport phenomena encountered in proton exchange membrane fuel cells occur intrinsically at the microscale level. Physically representative models that fully account for the salient physico-chemical and transport processes in PEM fuel cells are necessary to achieve truly predictive models that can be used with confidence to: (i) gain a better understanding of in-situ processes and couplings, (ii) explore new concepts, and (iii) support design and optimization. The development of more general, rationally based macroscale models requires use of knowledge on the microscale level to provide guidance, and to determine the required parameters and coefficients (model "constants"). In this paper we present a new membrane transport model, the binary friction membrane model (BFM2), recently developed to account for coupled protonic and water transport in polymer membranes. This general model is based on rational and physical consideration, removes several of the limitations of the empirical models used to date, and is formulated for all purfluoro-sulfonic acid membranes. The use of the BFM2 in a fuel cell model is illustrated highlighting significant performance predictions compared to existing empirical model. The second part of the paper addresses the fundamentals of two-phase transport in hydrophobic gad diffusion media. Computational and experimental visualizations resolving the microscale dynamics of water transport between the fibres of a GDL are presented, revealing transport mechanisms that are, contrary to assumptions used to date, dominated by fingering and channeling.

DESPITE the fact that American brimstone production has increased 2 ½ times since the prewar period 1935-1939, the demand for sulphur exceeds the supply. To alleviate this situation efforts are being made to increase the production of sulphur and bring the shortage to an end. The most important developments are being undertaken on the Gulf Coast. One new brimstone mine has been put into operation and three others are being developed. These projects are expected to account for a large part of the additional sulphur production now anticipated for the free world.1,2 Except for a small amount of byproduct sulphur from sour natural gas and refinery gases, American brimstone is produced by the same process devised by Frasch 60 years ago, consisting essentially of the injection of superheated water at about 325°F into sulphur-bearing formations through wells which are drilled from the surface by standard oilfield methods. Sulphur deposits vary in depth from a few hundred feet to 2500 ft from the surface; in a typical deposit the sulphur occurs as crystalline aggregates in porous limestone and gypsum in concentrations varying from 5 to 40 pct, the thickness of the formation ranging from a few feet to several hundred.3 The deposits are usually surrounded by formations impermeable to the flow of hot water, the top and sides being enclosed by impermeable sediments and the bottom by dense impermeable anhydrite. As the hot water leaves the well bore, it percolates through the formation and transmits its heat to the rock and sulphur. When the sulphur reaches 240°F it melts, separates from the rock, and flows through the hot channels downward to the bottom of the well. Here it is freed from incoming water and from formation water, which saturates the porous rock, by gravity separation, liquid sulphur being 1.8 times as heavy as water. It then is pumped to the surface in a relatively pure state, 99.5 pct or better. Chief contaminants are organic impurities, such as petroleum residues, which are soluble in sulphur and tend to discolor it.4 Sixteen deposits of commercial magnitude have been discovered in the Gulf Coast area. Five of these deposits have been depleted and abandoned with production totalling more than 26,886,000 tons. Eight properties are operating and have produced 65,875,000 tons to Jan. 1, 1952, for a total Frasch-type production of 92,761,000 tons. Three new deposits are under development. Aforementioned deposits are listed in Table I. Each of these deposits has been found in the caprock overlying shallow intrusive salt plugs or domes and buried in several hundred to as much as 2500 ft of sediments. All salt domes do not contain sulphur; only 16 sulphur deposits have been found in a total of 231 salt domes which are known to exist in the Gulf Coastal states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Ten of the salt domes lie in the Gulf of Mexico offshore from the Texas and Louisiana coasts. Additional offshore domes may be found, but their value as a sulphur potential is questionable owing to the great hazard and high cost that can be visualized at these exposed locations where depths of water reach 50 ft. Marsh operations of Freeport Sulphur Co. are in the southeast section of Louisiana. In general, the country is low, flat, relatively uninhabited marshland broken by many shallow lakes and bayous which extend for irregular distances inland. Geologically, the coastal area is of sedimentary origin, having been built up gradually under the sea by deposition of material carried down by large streams to their deltas. Polymetallic hydrothermal veins of the Western Cascades are hosted in propylitically altered Tertiary volcanics of calc-alkaline affinity and (or) in nearby, altered, and compositionally similar plutons. Ores from shallow and now abandoned mines produced mostly gold and were considered to be of epithermal origin. However, recent discovery of breccia and porphyry types of Cu-Mo mineralisation and other data suggest that the deposits of this terrane vary systematically both regionally, south to north, and locally, high to low altitudes. The evidence includes changes in (1) size, composition, and complexity of plutons, (2) types of mineral deposits; (3) assemblages of alteration and ore minerals; (4) trace metal geochemistry of host rocks; and (5) fluid inclusion and sulphur isotope data. They collectively imply a consanguineous origin of vein, breccia, and disseminated-veinlet types of mineralisation by magmatic hydrothermal processes.

Success in implementing new technology for metallurgical processes is not a foregone conclusion: This paper includes a survey of 23 new technology-based metallurgical plant start-ups, in which the authors have identified 7 successes, 9 difficult start-ups, and 7 failures. Success is defined not only as meeting the schedule and budget to the end of mechanical completion; the key goal is a fast ramp up to the full design production level, with minimum plant and equipment modifications required after start-up. This paper sets out the key factors that underlie achievement of a quick production ramp up curve, as determined from the authors? project experiences and a quantitative analysis of over twenty metallurgical plant start-ups, both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical. Thorough test-work and pilot plants, plus appropriate scale-up to the full commercial plant, are key determinants of success in implementing new technology in metallurgical processes. Another critical factor is the number of new elements and their interactions. Project phasing is also particularly important for new technology projects, with appropriate review after each phase to develop a risk mitigation plan for the subsequent phase. New technology projects need committed champions to advance the project in the face of sceptics, but also require dispassionate and unbiased experts to ask the hard questions. As a project evolves, it is important to periodically question the appropriateness of assumptions, as well as to re-assess the relevance and completeness of data from test-work / pilot plants / industrial analogues. Sufficient human and financial resources are required to complete the often arduous implementation phase. During the ramp-up period, the operation generates little positive cash flow; however, significant expertise and capital are required for the de-bottlenecking projects that are often necessary to reach the plant?s design output level.

On the 17th November, 1964, a new No., 2 lead blast furnace was blown in at Port Pirie. The furnace departed from previous designs by incorporating a centrally located continuous tapper for both lead bullion and slag. The use of a central tapper permitted a simple and effective layout for the handling of both products. Considerable development was necessary to bring the furnace to its present level of efficiency. Units vital to the continu- ous operation were developed to allow quick replacement, thus ensuring high time efficiency under varied operating and maintenance conditions. The furnace was designed with the following objectives in mind, 1. increased crucible life, 2. elimination of oxygen for slag tapping, 3. higher temperature slag for fuming operations-, 4. less operator skill needed, 5. reduced tapping tool consumption, 6. elimination of settler skull and scrap lead, 7. better control of blast air distributi.nn. A high purity electrolysis solution is essential for hydrometallurgical zinc winning processes. For this reason ferric iron containing compounds such as jarosite are precipitated as iron and impurity collector during the calcine leaching. Jarosite thus forms a chemical waste and creates environmental problems. This research contributes to the development of a wet jarosite treatment process, where less contaminated jarosite is produced which can act as an iron source. The present work studies jarosite precipitation kinetics and the uptake of zinc cations in batch and continuous experiments. The distribution coefficient for zinc in continuous experiments is constant for a wide ratio of zinc over ferric ions in the solution. Addition of NH, + ions in batch experiments accelerates the conversion rate equivalent to the driving force increment. Addition of 50,2-ions above the stoichiometric ratio increases the conversion rate less then could be expected from the increase in the estimated driving force. Zinc ions tend to retard the conversion rate. An increasing reaction temperature increases the conversion rate. Below 75 ?C the conversion rate approximates zero.

THE Salida smelting plant, owned by the Ohio & Colorado Smelting & Refining Co., is situated at an altitude of 7,000 ft., about 2 miles west of Salida, Colo., and 215 miles southwest of Denver. Salida is a division point on the. Denver & Rio Grande R. R. where the narrow-gauge line serving the Sari Juan region joins the through standard gauge. This narrow-gauge road also serves the coal and coke companies at Crested Butte and the lime quarries and mines at Monarch and Garfield, which are only 20 miles distant. These facts, together with the possibility of an appropriate site, doubtless influenced the builders to locate at this point. The smelting plant and yard occupy 80 acres of land on the northeast side of the Arkansas River. The slope of the ground is such as to permit of the ore being delivered by cars at a point 25 ft. above the feed floor; and in front of the furnaces there is a fall of 50 ft. for the slag clump. A recent purchase of river bottom has provided slag room for 20 years. As originally constructed, the plant consisted of four blast furnaces, 40 by 144 in. at tuyeres, two copper-matting furnaces, dust chamber, stack, power plant, blowers, sampling works, and one railroad trestle about 16 ft. from bed floor to rails. Later 12 hand roasters of excellent design were added and the practice of smelting leady matte in-a copper-matting furnace was abandoned. Since the plant passed under the present management the equipment has been increased so that the following is a brief description of the same at this date: Two lead blast. furnaces, 48 by 180 in. at tuyeres, 17 ft. 6 in. tuyères to feed floor; four lead blast furnaces, 40 by 144 in. at tuyères, 17 ft. 6 in. tuyères to feed floor; two copper-matting furnaces, not used; blast-furnace flue, 900 ft.; area 245 sq. ft.; blast-furnace stack, 150 ft.; above furnace floor, 190 ft. When smelting a 500-ton charge per day, the gases approximate 63,700 cu. ft. per minute and travel at a speed of 260 ft. per minute.

The water situation in Nevada mineral and related industries is described in this report. It contains information on the sources and adequacy of supply to current operators, requirements and uses, quality and costs, geography, hydrography, precipitation and evaporation characteristics, and Nevada water laws. Also, information is given on the water requirements of one public utility powerplant, and the source and consumption of water in four major cities. Water distribution at 24 operations is shown on schematic waterflow diagrams. The mineral industries of Nevada in 1962 used 8.6 billion gallons of new' water and reused 3.8 billion gallons for a total usage of 12.4 billion gallons. The copper industry was the major water user. The 1962 value of all mineral production in Nevada was $85.5 million. The large amount of water required to maintain thin high production is obtained principally from ground-water sources in alluvial valleys and the permeable rock formations of some mountain ranges. Some water is also obtained from perennial streams and springs. Sources of water utilized by existing industry ire near most mineral industry operations; however, seven companies are forced to pipe water distances ranging from 2 to 8 miles. Although water supplies of presently operating companies are adequate at most operations, several companies resort to large-scale reuse of water as a matter of conservation and economics. Acquisition of water by new operators is possible but takes considerable negotiation. Water rights, surface and underground, are controlled by the State. The quality of the water is satisfactory for most purposes. Analyses of 19 samples, listed in the appendix, show the range in water quality at various plants throughout the State. Costs of delivering new water to current operations range from 2 to 26 cents per 1,000 gallons with an average of 10 cents per 1,000 gallons for power and maintenance. No firm costs for recirculating water were available; estimated costs range from 1.5 to 2.5 cents per 1,000 gallons. The mineral-product value of the entire Nevada mineral industry in 1962 was equivalent to $10 per 1,000 gallons of new water and $26 per 1,000 gallons consumed. Projection of the 1962 water requirements of the Nevada mineral industry indicates that the demand For new water will increase from 8.6 billion gallons in 1962 to 11.9 billion gallons in 1980, a 43-percent increase. Water requirements in the year 2000 are estimated as 14.8 billion gallons, an increase over 1962 water demand of 78-percent.

"Top-down wall construction was selected to excavate the tunnel portal headwall areas of the ORB East End Crossing tunnel. Benefits included an expedited construction schedule realized by staging excavation and rock support with development of temporary construction access roads. Rock mass properties, proximity to right-of-way lines, and blasting impacts were considered to design suitable lift heights, intermediate bench locations, and permanent ground support systems to provide supported permanent excavations. Carbonate rock formations contained adverse subsurface geotechnical features including solution cavities, clay seams, weathered joints, pinnacled rock, and boulders, which were addressed by flexibility in design. The resulting over-break conditions and long-term water infiltration issues required economic design solutions. This paper discusses the unique considerations required during design of top-down tunnel portal headwalls excavated in carbonate rock formations including temporary excavation and permanent ground support systems which provided flexibility for unforeseen over-break, minimized construction delays, and provided long-term stability. PROJECT BACKGROUND The East End Crossing is an approximate 8-mile highway connection of the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges East End Crossing (ORBEE) project. Currently under construction, this connection will link State Road 265 in Indiana with the Gene Snyder Freeway in Kentucky to form an outer loop bypassing the Louisville-Southern Indiana metropolitan area. This highway project features a 2,510-foot long, three-span cable-stayed bridge over the Ohio River, and a 1,680-foot long tunnel. The project, being managed by the Indiana Finance Authority and Indiana Department of Transportation, is scheduled to open to traffic by the end of 2016. The new twin three-lane tunnel under the historic Drumanard Estate requires steep cut excavations for approach and tunnel portal walls on the order of 60 feet deep through overburden soil and carbonate bedrock formations. This paper focuses on the design considerations for the permanent support of the top-down wall construction of the tunnel portal headwalls and approach retaining walls."

This report presents developments of fundamental equations for describing the flow and thermodynamic behavior of two-phase single-component fluids moving under steady conditions through porous media. Many of the theoretical considerations upon which these equations are premised have received little or no attention in oil-reservoir fluid-flow research. The significance of the underlying flow theory in oil-producing operations is indicated. In particular, the theoretical analysis pertains to the steady, adiabatic, macroscopically linear, two-phase flow of a single-component fluid through a horizontal column of porous medium. It is considered that the test fluid enters the upstream end of the column while entirely in the liquid state, moves downstream an appreciable distance, begins to vaporize, and then moves through the remainder of the column as a gas-liquid mixture. The problem posed is to find the total weight rate of flow and the pressure distribution along the column for a given inlet pressure and temperature, a given exit pres5ure or temperature and given characteristics of the test fluid and porous medium. In developing the theory, gas-liquid interfacial phenomena are treated. phase equilibrium is assumed and previous theoretical work of other investigators of the problem is modified. Laboratory experiments performed with specially designed apparatus. in which propane is used as the test fluid, substantiate the theory. The apparatus. materials and experimental procedure are described. Comparative experimental and theoretical results are presented and discussed. It is believed that the research findings contributed in this * paper should not only lead to a better understanding of oil-reservoir behavior, but also should be suggective in regard to future research in this field of study. INTRODUCTION In recent years much time and effort has been consumed in both theoretical and experimental studies of the static and . dvnamic behavior of oil-reservoir fluids in porous rocks. Although lack of sufficient basic oil-field data, principally concerning the properties and characteristics of reservoir rocks and fluids, largely precludes quantitative application of research results to oil-field problems, qualitative application has become common practice. In effect. oil-reservoir engineering research is serving as a firm foundation for oil-field development and production practices leading to increased economic recoveries of petroleum. This province of research. however, still poses many perplexing problems. The thermodynamic behavior of two-phase fluids moving through porous media constitutes one facet of reservoir-fluid-flow research that has not received the attention it deserves. This report embodies a theoretical discussion of this subject and a description of a series of related laboratory experiments. The significance of the problem to oil field operations is indicated but in articular the report centers around a theory and method for analyzing the steady. macroscopically linear, two-phase flow of a fluid (a single molecular species) through a horizontal column of porous medium. For simplicity in showing how the thermodynamic behavior of two-phase fluids moving through porous media affects oil-reservoir performance problems, attention is focused temporarily on a particular well producing petroleum from an idealized water-free solution-gas drive reservoir, the reservoir rock being a horizontal, thin, fairly homogeneous sandstone of large areal extent confined between two impermeable strata. The flowing hydrocarbon fluid is considered to exist entirely as a Iiquid at points in the reservoir remote from the well; however. the decline in fluid pressure in the direction of the well causes vaporization of the hydrocarbon to begin at a radial distance r from the well. Upstream from r the fluid moves entirely as a liquid and downstream from r it moves either entirely as a gas or as a gas-liquid mixture depending on the properties of the hydrocarbon and on the thermodynamic process it follows during flow. The distance r would be variable under transient flow conditions. but for purposes of analysis the flow is considered to l~e steady at the particular instant of observation during the flowing life of the well of interest. If the flow were isothermal and the hydrocarbon a pure substance, the fluid would be entirely gaseous downstream from r. Thus, this isothermal flow process for a pure substance would require that the heat of vaporization be supplied at r. over zero length of porous medium, at the precise rate necessary to maintain the constant temperature. This means that the solid matrix of the porous medium (reservoir rock) and the surroundings (impermeable strata confining the reservoir rock) would have to serve as infinite heat sources. Heat-transfer requirements would be somewhat less severe for the isothermal flow of a multicorn-ponent hydrocarbon as bubble and dew points at the same temperature correspond to different pressures. In this instance isothermal conditions would be sustained without complete vaporization of the fluid over zero length of porous medium. Nevertheless. as the flow is in the direction of decreasing

The significance of the problem to oil field operations is indicated but in articular the report centers around a theory and method for analyzing the steady. macroscopically linear, two-phase flow of a fluid (a single molecular species) through a horizontal column of porous medium. For simplicity in showing how the thermodynamic behavior of two-phase fluids moving through porous media affects oil-reservoir performance problems, attention is focused temporarily on a particular well producing petroleum from an idealized water-free solution-gas drive reservoir, the reservoir rock being a horizontal, thin, fairly homogeneous sandstone of large areal extent confined between two impermeable strata. The flowing hydrocarbon fluid is considered to exist entirely as a Iiquid at points in the reservoir remote from the well; however. the decline in fluid pressure in the direction of the well causes vaporization of the hydrocarbon to begin at a radial distance r from the well. Upstream from r the fluid moves entirely as a liquid and downstream from r it moves either entirely as a gas or as a gas-liquid mixture depending on the properties of the hydrocarbon and on the thermodynamic process it follows during flow. The distance r would be variable under transient flow conditions. but for purposes of analysis the flow is considered to l~e steady at the particular instant of observation during the flowing life of the well of interest. If the flow were isothermal and the hydrocarbon a pure substance, the fluid would be entirely gaseous downstream from r. Thus, this isothermal flow process for a pure substance would require that the heat of vaporization be supplied at r. over zero length of porous medium, at the precise rate necessary to maintain the constant temperature. This means that the solid matrix of the porous medium (reservoir rock) and the surroundings (impermeable strata confining the reservoir rock) would have to serve as infinite heat sources. Heat-transfer requirements would be somewhat less severe for the isothermal flow of a multicorn-ponent hydrocarbon as bubble and dew points at the same temperature correspond to different pressures. In this instance isothermal conditions would be sustained without complete vaporization of the fluid over zero length of porous medium. Nevertheless. as the flow is in the direction of decreasing

A study was conducted to examine the potential of diesel emissions control strategies based on retrofitting existing power packages with exhaust aftertreatment devices and repowering with advanced power packages. The retrofit systems, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF), were evaluated individually using a US EPA tier 2 (ter 2) engine operated under four steady-state conditions and one transient cycle. The DOC effectively curtailed emissions of CO, and to some extent organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and aerosol number concentration. The DPF system offered substantially higher reductions in OC and EC mass and aerosol number concentrations. Both, the DOC and DPF achieved reductions in the aforementioned emissions without adversely affecting emissions of NO2 and nano-sized aerosols. The strategy of repowering with an advanced system was examined using a US EPA tier 4 final (tier 4f) engine equipped with a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system and diesel exhaust fluid-based selective catalytic reduction system, but not with a DPF system. The tier 4f engine contributed substantially less than the tier 2 engine to the EC and OC mass, aerosol number, and CO, NO, and NO2 concentrations. The tier 4f engine was very effective in reducing aerosol mass, NO, and NO2 concentrations, but it was not equally effective in reducing aerosol number concentrations. The implementation of viable exhaust after treatment systems and advanced diesel power packages could be instrumental to the underground mining industry to secure a clean, economical, and dependable source of power for mobile equipment.

This review work reports the recovery of potassiumfromdifferent rocks and mineral sources. The global demand for potassiumis rising consistently due to the growth of agricultural production. A major portion of the world potassium production is consumed in making of fertiliser; however, other uses include those in pharmaceutical, glass, ceramic, food and detergent industries. The availability of soluble potash minerals (sylvite, kainite and carnallite) in different countries like Canada, USA, Israel and Russia makes them as major potash producers, whereas agricultural-based countries like Liberia, Somalia, Central African Republic, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia including India meet their potassium requirement through import only. On the contrary, the availability of huge potassium-bearing rocks/minerals (like nepheline syenite, feldspar, mica, glauconitic sandstone) in these countries containing around 4–17% K2O would be a prospective for commercial production of potassium. The potassium recovery from minerals/rocks is very complicated due to the uniform distribution of potassium throughout the crystal structure. Different physico-chemical separation methods like bioleaching, chemical leaching, flotation and roast leaching have been discussed for the successful recovery of potash values from these rocks/minerals. However, the recovery of potassium from hugely available seawater using the chemical precipitation, solvent extraction,membrane separation and ionic exchangemethods is not cost-effective due to the low concentration of potassium.

"INTRODUCTION Lookout Mountain is the natural barmier that isolates Dade County from the rest of Georgia. Legend has it that Dade County seceded from the Union long before the rest of the State of Georgia and did not officially return until July 4, 1945.Coal mining began in the Lookout Mountain area in 1891, and by 1894 production amounted to about 1,000 tons daily. Present production by the two principal operating companies is about 3,600 tons monthly.In the Sand Mountain area, coal has been mined intermittently since before the Civil War, and probably 6,500,000 tons has been produced.The Bureau of Mines coal project was initiated to alleviate a possible coal shortage and to assist the State in developing coal deposits to supply State institutions and local markets. Drilling began January 1, 1945, and ended May 11, 1945, after 2,907 feet had been drilled. By this time the Georgia Power Co. became interested in northwest Georgia coal fields as a possible source of more economic fuel for their steam-driven power plants, but the Bureau continued to act in an advisory capacity to the power company until June 30, 1945."

INTRODUCTION IRON-ORE deposits in the Philippine Islands became the subject of official record as early as 1664. Undoubtedly iron ore was known and recognized by the Filipinos long before the earliest Spanish records. It is even possible that the Filipino practice of smelting iron ore is, like the native copper smelting, older than the Spanish conquest of the islands. The first records have to do with the magnetite-hematite ores near the towns of Santa Inez and Bosoboso in Rizal Province, from 15 to 20 miles east of Manila. The magnetite-hematite ores of Bulacan were exploited in 1783. Similar ores near the town of Mambulao in Camarines Province yielded a number of specimens to be exhibited in Spain in 1834. With the exception, then, of the lateritic iron ores on the eastern coast of northern Surigao, the true nature of which was not recognized until 1914, the important iron-ore deposits of the Philippines had all been discovered before the islands came under the dominion of the United States. Indeed, in the Spanish documents relating to the history of iron mining are statements which, if their accuracy be not questioned, leave us in the Philippines today with much less iron ore than the Spaniards found. To quote, for example, a report submitted to the Superior Government in Spain in 1835 by one of its emissaries, Don Lorenzo Calvo: "The Philippine Islands, most excellent Sir, possess iron and exhibit it in nearly every known mineralogical combination, and in such abundance that the cordillera of the island of Luzon, from Montufar Point in San Bernardino Straits to Cape Bojeador, is composed of no other mineral than iron, its ranges, of the third order, being in content and structure totally iron of the best quality, the more valuable in that its combinations are such as to facilitate its fusion and to render its reduction to metal simple."
