This report contains Bureau of Mines routine crude-oil analyses of 20 samples from5 areas on the arctic slope of Alaska. Two samples were condensates from the South Barrow gasfield, Barrow Lakes area. The remaining 18 samples were crude oils from the following areas: Barrow Lakes, 1 seepage sample; Umiat, 10 well samples; Cape Simpson, 1 seepage sample and 3 well samples; Fish Creek, 2 well samples; and Wolf Creek, I well sample. Table 1 summarizes information on the origin of the crude-oil samples, and table 2 summarizes characteristics of the samples. Item numbers in both tables correspond to item numbers of the analyses at the end of this report, and the samples are referred to by these numbers throughout the text.

Batterham and Algie began their paper on: `The role of technology in the minerals industry' (1995) by noting that while: it is often stated that innovation is central to the economic survival of mining and minerals processing in the face of global competition, .. . technology is often far from a core strategy in our industry. This point is correct. Throughout the world, as a broad generalisation, mining companies do not value technology development as a principal means of gaining competitive advantage. It is important to understand why this is the case. Batterham and Algie address this question by making distinctions between innovation, technology and research. They note that while: all successful (mining) companies are good at innovation . . . that innovation can proceed without any research and development and that it is innovation that generates the competitive advantage, not research and development per se. In this paper we accept these arguments. However, our focus is somewhat different. Whereas Batterham and Algie took a mining company's perspective on the technologies of mining and processing, we take a broader view of the opportunities for technology development for company Australia but, in order to focus the argument, we restrict our discussion to the area of mining (rather than processing); we focus particularly on mining systems and mining equipment. We begin by looking at the motivation of companies operating in any industrial sector to invest in research and development. Figure 1 recognises four levels of industrial maturity. For companies in the embryonic and growth stages R&D often is essential to initiating and developing the business. Mining, on the other hand, is a mature industry. In mature industries the conventional roles for R&D are to reduce costs, to extend product differentiation, or to develop new technology with the aim of rejuvenating the business. Next we ask whether these general-industry arguments apply to the mining industry. If they do then the mining industry should value R&D more highly; after all cost reductions and business rejuvenation are goals that are worth achieving. On the other hand if, for whatever reason, these general arguments do not apply to mining then this may lead the mining industry to invest only modestly, or not at all, in R&D. In this event, while this may be a rational decision for the mining industry, it may not be in the best interest of a nation like Australia where revenues from the sale of mineral products represent an important part of the country's economy.

"The study described in this paper, on the reactions in an iron blast furnace, is part of the investigation being conducted by the Bureau of Mines on combustion of coke and the reduction of iron oxides in the blast furnace. Previous study of the combustion zone of the iron blast furnace, by means of a series of as samples taken through the tuyeres across the hearths of 13 blast furnaces, showed that the combustion of the coke in the blast-furnace hearth is complete at a distance of 32 to 40 inches from the nose of the tuyere, measured horizontally toward the center of the furnace. The results of this previous work are sum¬marized in the curves shown in figure 1, where it will be noted that practically all of the oxygen disappears at a distance of approximately 30 inches from the nose of the tuyere.In order to determine the height at which oxygen is found in a vertical direction above the tuyeres - it had been suggested that the combustion zone turned upward near the tuyere and to obtain comparisons with the samples taken at the Bureau of Mines experimental6 (5-ton) blast-furnace at Minneapolis, the Bureau extended the gas sampling on a commercial furnace to a number of planes between the tuyere level and the stock line. The sampling was conducted on a 300-ton furnace, making foundry iron, operated by the Central Iron and Coal Co., at Holt, Ala. The furnace was smelting Southern red and brown ores and nodules from pyrite sinter. Figure 3 is a vertical section of the furnace showing the six planes sampled."

"A frother analysis technique based on the formation of a colored solution with UV-VIS absorbance proportional to frother concentration over a certain range has been developed. The calculation of concentration requires the comparison of the sample absorbance at a selected wavelength with a linear calibration (frother concentration vs. absorbance) constructed with values collected from solutions of known concentration (standards) at the same wavelength. It has been found that concentration ranges for preparation of standards can vary widely. An integration of our experiences into a databank can offer some guidance on the selection of standard concentrations. The databank includes results from the analysis of 37 chemical reagents, commercial frothers, and natural oils used in research work or at industrial sites. Grouping frothers by similar chemical structure or origin provides a good basis for selecting the standards to approach the maximum absorbance range for the spectrophotometer in use.INTRODUCTIONA technique to determine frother concentration on samples of industrial milling streams based on formation of a colored solution with UV-VIS absorbance proportional to frother concentration has been developed. The concentration is determined by comparison of its absorbance, at some selected wavelength, with those obtained by processing a series of solutions of known concentration (standards), at the same wavelength. It is desirable to have linear calibration (frother concentration vs. absorbance) over the widest concentration range. The upper concentration can be restricted by the instrument, as there is a maximum detectable absorbance (minimum transmittance), which can be reliably sensed by the UV-VIS detector (in most cases maximum absorbance is 3)."

This article carried out the experimental study on using desulfurization ash in steel slag composite material. This was done by investigating the desulfurization ash content in formula one and formula two samples on the influence of setting time and strength of mortar. Through this study the following conclusions were reached for formula one: (1) a setting time of more than 10 hours is required, (2) a dosage of desulfurization ash of 1 ~ 2% is optimal, where flexural strength is reduced by 10% ~ 23% and compressive strength reduced by 5.7% ~ 16.4%. The conclusions of formula two were: (1) when the dosage of desulfurization ash is within 5%, the setting time is within 10 hours; (2) when the dosage of desulfurization ash is 1 ~ 2%, the flexural strength is increased by 5 ~ 7% and the compressive strength is reduced by 1 ~ 2%. The results show that the formula two is better.

Leaching, cementation, electroplating and flotation are all electrochemical phenomenon. They are also key processes in the hydrometallurgical treatment of metals. Unfortunately electrochemical methods tend to be under-utilized when studying these processes and one possible reason for this is the confusion surrounding the large number of electrochemical techniques available. In this paper four former PhD students of Professor Ian Ritchie present an insight into how one electrochemical technique can be used to compliment rate/kinetic studies. The paper details how to perform the experiments, interpret data, and recognize complications with the results. Examples where this approach has been highly successful are presented, and include: cementation of zinc by aluminium, cementation of copper by nickel, cyanide leaching of gold and the cementation of gold thiourea by mild steel. The examples illustrate that this universal approach adopted by Ian Ritchie provides the key to understanding the mechanism of many hydrometallurgical reactions.

A digital simulator of classification and grinding circuits is used to evaluate the performances of various flowsheets. For a given flowsheet configuration, unit processes dimensions and operating conditions, the simulator calculates the steady-state values of the process variables. A supervisory algorithm is implemented in the simulator to determine the conditions which meet the required criterion on operation, tonnage and product quality. Calculation illustrations are proposed for the design of wet and dry grinding circuits. The performances of various arrangements of cement clinker and sulphide ore grinding flowsheets are evaluated and discussed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the Black Butte RARE (I area during the summer of 1981. The study area encompasses 17,800 acres [27.8 sq mi (7,233 ha)] along the course of the Black Butte River, 13 mi (22 km) southeast of Covello, California. No mineral deposits were identified by the U.S. Bureau of Mines during this survey. Assay results of samples taken in this area indicate only trace amounts of manganese, chromium, and nickel. No radioactive or fluorescent minerals were detected. No oil and gas, coal, or geothermal leases have been recorded for the study area.

At the Q. I. T. ilmenite smelter, nine electric furnaces produce titania slag and iron At high power levels, a furnace requires either a slag or an iron tap approximately once an hour, using rail cars as slag receptacles and ladles for iron. The correct scheduling of taps is an important operational tool due to peak power load and operational considerations. Over recent years, large increases in furnace capacity have imposed severe strains on the product handling facilities. This situation results in loss of production when several taps are bunched, because of an in- ability to handle many taps simultaneously. An on-line computer program has been developed to generate schedules for tapping a single furnace. By improved scheduling, this program can en- large the tonnage of each tap and minimize the number of taps, while reducing traffic congestion and unit cost s. Future plans call for extension of this technique to all nine furnaces with addition of a master scheduling program to optimize the overall traffic flow in the smelter aisle.

The internal friction of single crystals of metals is affected markedly by a variety of factors, which, according to the literature, are without influence on the internal friction of polycrystalline metals at strain amplitudes less than 10-5. For example, the internal friction of a suitably oriented zinc single crystal is multiplied by a factor of ioo when the vibration amplitude is slightly increased, and the internal friction of a copper crystal is markedly increased by the application of a stress of 30 lb. per sq. in. for one minute. In this paper it will be shown that these, together with the other phenomena associated with the damping of mechanical vibrations in metal single crystals, can be satisfactorily explained, at least qualitatively, in terms of an atomic mechanism that has been proposed for quite another purpose—that of accounting for slip in metals. The extraordinary agreement between the observed behavior of the metal single crystals and the behavior that could be predicted on the basis of this atomic mechanism leads to the belief that the latter is probably essentially correct. If this is so, it follows that valuable information about the slip process in metals may be gained from measurements of internal friction on single crystals. In this paper the results of the only study to date on the damping of mechanical vibrations in single crystals of metals mill be presented. Experimental Procedure The internal friction of a material is a measure of the rate at which the energy of mechanical vibrations is converted into heat. The measure of internal friction used in the present paper is the decrcment A, which is defined as the fraction of the energy of vibration lost per half cycle. The measurements described here were made for longitudinal oscillations at a frequency of 33.5 kc. for the copper crystals, and at a frequency of 39 kc. for the zinc crystals. The method used is that of the composite piezoelectric oscillator. The single-crystal specimens are in the form of circular cylinders M in. in diameter and I 1/2 to 21/2 in. long. The crystal rods are waxed in a V-block and sawed to the proper length with a fine jeweler's saw. The ends of the specimen are ground flat, and one end is cemented with a very thin film of beeswax and rosin to the end of an x-cut quartz rod which is 1/4 in. in diameter and 3 in. long. The length of the specimen rod is determined by the condition that its natural frequency for longitudinal vibration be the same as that of the quartz rod, within 0.5 per cent. The lengths of the specimens are thus different for different orientations of the cylinder axis with respect to the crystallographic axes. When the specimen and quartz rods are thus matched in frequency the adhesive is at a node of stress, and it has been shown experimentally that under these circumstances

The effect of engine parameters on exhaust emissions from two diesel engines was studied experimentally. Fuel-injection characteristics and intake air conditions were considered as parameters influencing the emissions. Emphasis was placed on the effect of parameter variations on nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, because diesels generally emit very low levels of carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons. Emissions other than NOx were at lowest levels when the engines were adjusted for best performance. NOx emissions can be diminished somewhat through variation in fuel-injection characteristics, but there generally are penalties in emissions of CO, smoke, and unburned hydrocarbons or in engine performance. Temperature and composition of intake air have a significant effect on NOx emissions. Levels of NOx are reduced by recirculating the exhaust gas or by adding water to the intake air stream. However, the rate of water added or exhaust gas recirculated must be limited to prevent the degradation of engine performance and increased emissions of CO and smoke. At high exhaust recirculation rates, levels of CO and smoke were increased such that it was necessary to derate the engine and also to use a catalytic system for oxidation of CO.

Two degasification test boreholes were drilled to depths of 1,238 and 1,212 feet on Bureau of Mines property at Bruceton, Pa., as part of the Bureau's long-range coal degasification program. The holes provided detailed geologic information and geologic sections, which were correlated with regional stratigraphic cross sections prepared by the Pennsylvania Geological Survey. Gas content determinations and coal analyses were made on the Upper Freeport, Middle Kittanning, Clarion, Brookville, and Mercer coalbeds; gas content of the coalbeds ranged from 53 to 165 cubic feet per ton. Formation pressure and gas flow tests were conducted on selected coalbed intervals in borehole 1; formation pressures ranged from 292 to 473 psig. The middle Kittanning coalbed was hydraulically stimulated using very heavy gelled water, but gas production remained low because gel residue and formation water inhibited the flow of gas. Gas contents in the Clarion, Upper Brookville, and Mercer coalbeds were anomalously low owing to the proximity of porous sand- stones which act as reservoirs for gas migrating from coalbeds.

"The grain selection mechanism which occurs during the growth of columnar dendritic structures is routinely used in the investment casting industry to produce directionally solidified (DS) and single crystal turbine blades. However, the evolution of the grain density with increasing distance from the chill has rarely been correlated with the evolution of the grain texture. This contribution presents a three-dimensional (3-D) stochastic modeling approach which permits the computation of grain maps, pole figures and grain density evolutions in DS superalloys. These predictions are compared with measurements resulting from an automatic indexing technique of Electron Back-Scattered diffraction Patterns. This 3-D stochastic model, which applies to uniform temperature situations, has to be extended to the dendritic growth in a thermal gradient. As a preliminary step, a 2-D Cellular Automaton (CA) has been coupled recently to Finite Element (FE) heat flow computations in order to predict the grain structures in complex shape investment cast part. The application of this CAFE model to the investment casting of a turbine blade is presented. Considering these results, the extension of the CAFE algorithm to three dimensions is discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe selection of columnar grains during the directional solidification of alloys plays a key role during the investment casting of directionally solidified (DS) and single crystal (SC) components for aerospace applications [I]. This selection mechanism, leading to a competition of the dendritic network propagation at grain boundaries, has been the subject of many investigations. In particular, the study of Walton and Chalmers [2] is remarkable since it provides a link between the evolutions of the density and of the texture of columnar grains with increasing distance from the mold wall. Since this original work of Walton and Chalmers, two new tools have become available, which enable one to revisit the problem of grain selection in much greater depth. The first one is a fully automatic indexing technique of Electron Back-Scattered diffraction Patterns (EBSPs) [3-6] which directly gives the crystallographic orientation of the solid at any location of the specimen. Pole figures, orientation distributions, misorientations between grains can be visualized very easily with this technique. This information can be directly compared with the results of a second tool: a three-dimensional (3-D) stochastic model (SM) describing the nucleation and growth of grains in a uniform temperature field [6-9]. In order to extend this model to non-uniform temperature situations, a preliminary 2-D model has been developed [10]. It is based on a Cellular Automaton (CA) algorithm coupled with Finite Element (FE) heat flow computations. Since the details of both the automatic indexing technique of EBSPs and the simulation tools have already been published [3-10], only a brief summary is given here."

It has become apparent in recent years to everyone intimately concerned with the future of the American fuels industries that the growth in demand for energy has become a topic receiving considerable attention, and that investigators are leaning more and more toward a mathematical approach to deduce what pattern that growth will follow. Though coal has been included by necessity In all-studies of future energy markets, it has not been the subject of mathematical analysis or description as frequently as has been total energy or some of the other fuels, particularly petroleum, It is the intent in this particular paper, to subject bituminous coal consumption to a preliminary mathematical scrutiny which can lead to a more logical estimation of the general level of bituminous coal consumption for the next decade, as well as formulating an approach toward describing how coal consumption may vary as the result of the annual variations in activity in the United States, economy, The approach utilized is more sophisticated than the mere projection of the historical trend of bituminous coal consumption. Such a projection would lead to a continuation of the recent decline, indicating that coal consumption would reach zero some thirty years from now. On the other hand, the mathematical analysis described here is a relatively simple, straightforward approach and- is not intended to represent the-ultimate in mathematical economic analysis as now practiced, It is hoped that this will contribute to our knowledge of bituminous coal markets. Even more, it is hoped that it will help arouse a greater interestin utilizing mathematical and statistical analysis when studying the bituminous coal industry. - Since this is a preliminary study, comments and criticisms are anticipated.

A SERIES of seven hypoeutectoid alloys, up to 18.2 atomic pct Mn, was made by the levitation melting technique. The loss of weight on melting was considered to be entirely due to volatilization of manganese, and compositions were computed on this basis. Filed samples (—200 Tyler mesh) were helium quenched from 1000°C after soaking for 5 min by a technique already described.' Quenched Alloys -Assessments of the amounts of a phase produced and the hardness of the quenched alloys are summarized in Fig. 1. Many articles on the physical properties of fire damp have appeared in the Transactions and elsewhere but practically nothing has been written in regard to its occurrence or fluctuation in quantity in an ordinary mine. After the Monongah explosion in 1907, with the loss of 361 lives, the Consolidation Coal Co. sought a method by which such catastrophes could be prevented. While the cause of this particular explosion was attributed to coal dust, some of those acquainted with the mine thought that fire damp was involved, if it was not the initial cause. So the literature on the subject was studied and mines where similar conditions prevailed in this country and Europe, were visited, with the view of establishing some system by which gas could be more easily detected and controlled. The results of this study were disappointing for no method was found other than the time-honored fire boss with his safety lamp, with some variations in the rules and regulations governing his inspections and reports. Duties of the Fire Boss Pending the development of a better method, it was decided to standardize and perfect the duties of the fire boss and the reports based on his observations. Those who were then in service were closely examined, various lamps were experimented with and the lamps and individuals tested under known conditions. It was found that a fire boss could tell whether gas was present but his estimate of quantity was not even an approximation; therefore, while the services of fire bosses were indispen-sible there was need of additional information by which the quantity of gas could be estimated with some precision in order to determine its variation from time to time. The use of dolomite as a refractory began in England about 1870 when the basic Bessemer process for the removal of phosphorus from steel was developed by Thomas and Gilchrist.Knowledge of dolomite as a refractory in this country goes back to the early part of this century, at the time when the Hoskins Brothers took over the Lithgow Iron and Steel Works from W. Sandford. The practice then was toimport burned dolomite in casks from England. It is reported that much of the material was powdered when received, but was still serviceable. The earliest. used sources of local stone were in the Bathurst and Mudgee areas of New South Wales, and these dolomites were first used raw. Later, dolomite was burned in cupolas at Havilah near Mudgee, coke being obtained from the South Coast of New South Wales. This plant supplied burned dolomite to the Lithgow steel plant, later to the Australil1n Iron and Steel plant at Port Kembla, and also to the electric steel furnaces at Newcastle, Sydney and Melbourne until the plant was closed down in 1946.The Broken Hill Proprietary Company first obtained its dolomite from George's Plains near Bathurst (this was, really a magnesium limestone) and later from Mount Knowles, a deposit near Mudgee, which was eventually taken over by the CO:plpany in 1918. "Micropiles are small diameter cast insitu reinforced grouted piles and it has been effectively used in many applications of ground improvement. It increases the load carrying capacity of soil and reduces the settlement. It is also used in strengthening existing foundations. In this study, the effect of Solid and Hollow micropiles on the load carrying capacity of footing resting on sand is studied. The effects of solid Micropiles are investigated by conducting experimental model studies. The parameters involved in this study include the position of pile, pile length and pile spacing. Load test was carried out on a model footing resting on sand with solid and hollow micropiles. Load test trail is repeated for footing on Micropiles with varying lengths of 10, 20, and 30 times the diameter and spacing equal to 5, 4, 3, 2 times the diameter. The load-settlement behavior of each case is compared. Optimum length and optimum spacing of both the solid micropile and hollow micropile are determined. It is also observed that the effect of micropiles in the peripheral of footing resists lateral displacement of soil underneath the footing. The micropile beyond significant depth becomes redundant.INTRODUCTIONA micropile is a small diameter (less than 300 mm) drilled and grouted pile that is typically reinforced - FHWA-NHI 2005 (Federal Highway Administration-National Highway Institution). It is constructed by drilling a borehole, placing a steel reinforcing element into the borehole and grouting it. Hollow micropiles are typically reinforced by solid central bar that occupies about onethird of the hole volume. The grout is placed by gravity, under pressure methods or by a combination of both (post grouting). Thus, micropiles can be considered as small drilled-shafts that are specially drilled and grouted.Historically, micropiles have been introduced in Italy as a foundation system mainly for retrofitting and underpinning of structures that had sustained damage during World War II and access for conventional piling equipment was not possible (Bruce, 1988). The second generation of micropiles is a pressure grouted piles with a central mono all thread bar (with diameter up to 89 mm). They are installed by using either an open or cased hole drilling method.A new generation of micropiles, termed Grout injection bore micropiles (IBOR), was developed in the 1980s. The IBOR, currently named hollow bar micropiles, utilizes a continuous all-threaded hollow steel bar as the drilling and grouting conduit, which allows drilling and grouting simultaneously without the need of a casing during drilling. A sacrificial (lost) bit with openings that allow for pressure grouting of the hole is threaded onto the end of the hollow bar and is left in place following drilling. A drilling fluid (air, water, or grout) is introduced through the hollow bar and allows the spoils to flush from the borehole opening. Upon reaching the required depth, neat cement grout is then injected under high pressure into the drilled hole to fill the annulus between the bar and the soil from the bottom to the top. Due to the grouting method employed, the shape of the hollow bar micropile is expected to have a bulb shape with an enlarged base."
