Several classes of commercial explosives and blasting agents behave non-ideally, especially in diameters near their critical diameter. A direct and convenient measure of non-ideal behavior is the detonation velocity (VOD); if the VOD is less than the ideal value, usually obtained by calculation, then the explosive is detonating in the non-ideal mode. Such lowering of the VOD is usually due to both lateral loss of energy and post-CJ release of energy. The second of these factors, namely slow release of chemical energy, is of most interest in blasting. While the observation of a low VOD clearly suggests slow reaction of part of the explosive composition, it does not necessarily mean that the energy is lost to the overall rock-breaking process. The partition of the energy of the explosive into various useful and wasteful categories is considered. Simple models of energy partition in blasting, and of explosive reaction kinetics, are presented. The models consider the effect of explosive type and rock type, the explosive being described in terms of the most common phases namely liquid, air bubbles, porous ammonium nitrate, dense or crystalline ammonium nitrate, and aluminum. Over a range of combinations of the above phases, the model predicts reasonable critical diameters and VOD's. Results are presented which show the effects of non-ideal detonation on fragmentation and heave in different rock types. Conclusions are drawn about those blasting conditions in which ideal behavior is beneficial, or Disadvantageous.

During recent years, oil producers have observed with interest the practical success which has attended the application of water as a medium for displacement of oil from its reservoir sands in the Bradford field of northern Pennsylvania and southern New York. Here, according to various authorities, additional recoveries of frorn 2,000 to 12,000 bhl. of oil per acre have heen secured by this method, after ordinary flowing and pumping. rnethods of production had practically reached the lower limit of economic operation. Notwithstanding the success which has attended the practical use of the flooding process in the Bradford field, oil producers in other regions are skeptical of its value when applied under physical conditions differing markedly from those which characterizc the Bradford field. Its usc would probably he construed as illegal in most of the oil-producing states. This general relnctance on the part of oil producers in other regions to accept the flooding process is due in large part to lack of infor-n~ation regarding the factors that influence its operation and efficiency. With the purpose of clarifying to some extent the issues involved, and of determining when the flooding proccess may or may not beeffee-tivcly ernployed, the writers have conducted a serics of laboratory exper-imentments under carefully controlled conditions, designed to indicate, the influence of various physical, chemical arid lithologic factors. These experments have not been conducted under conditions identical with those which exist at depths far below the earth's surface, so that direct quantitative comparisons with field results are not justified, hut it is believed that the experimental results at least warrant qualitative inter-pretations that may he applied to field conditions. The methods employed in the conduct of these experiments are briefly explained, and the results, together with the conclusions based thereon, arc presented. Over a century ago the first ship designed solely for carrying a bulk cargo was launched. This vessel, the "John Bowes", with a deadweight of 660 tonnes was a single decked ship with machinery and accommodation aft. As such she was undoubtedly the fore- runner of the bulk carrier of today only some two hundred and fifty times smaller. Whilst the "John Bowes" pioneered the present accepted mode of transporting the bulk com- modities of the world, it is unlikely that her cargo was either loaded or discharged as quickly as that of a 150, 000 tonner of today. Two decades ago the bulk carrier was beginning to feature in the bulk handling ports of the world. Cargoes of iron ore previously carried in the 'tween deck vessels of the Empire type and Second World War Liberty ships began to be poured into the unrestricted open holds of bulk or ore carriers. The size of vessels catering for this relatively new innovation has rapidly grown to pass the 150, 000 deadweight tonne mark, but only in the last few years. The growth from now into the future is not simply one of ship size evolution. Neither is it a function of the depth of water available at ports. It is in fact a function of a number of features such as ports, loading and unloading facilities, ship trading characteristics, length of voyage and total economies of the transport task from supplier to destination.

It is the purpose of the present paper, while not excluding chemical considerations, to deal more extensively with some of the physical and mechanical aspects of the blast-furnace process, and to point out its dependence, in these respects, on well-known laws. The quantity and cost of ore and flux required to make a ton of iron being determined by circumstances over which the furnace-man, under given conditions as to quality and quantity of product, has commonly little control, the principal item of cost, apart from the saving of labor, which he can aspire to reduce, is that of fuel. To determine the limits of possibility in this direction is clearly the first step in a practical inquiry; and this step is represented herewith in Fig. 1, a diagram showing the total useful effect obtained from a pound of fuel under various conditions, and thus permitting direct comparison, under any given conditions, between actual results and the maximum possible results. The following statements will explain the basis upon which this diagram has been constructed. One pound of fuel, containing 90 per cent. of fixed carbon (which represents average conditions), is taken as the unit. The degree of oxidation of the carbon is measured by the ratio of the two oxides of carbon contained in the top-gases. It is necessary to remember that a considerable quantity of carbon is brought in as carbon dioxide by the flux, and to take account of it and of its condition. It is here considered that the carbon dioxide liberated by the limestone does not affect the analysis of the top-gases, and that the ratio of CO to CO2 will remain unchanged by the addition of limestone; enough CO, being reduced by the solution

The reduction of an ilmenite concentrate with coal at 1000, 1050 and 1100¦C was investigated using thermogravimetry and X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and electron probe microanalysis of the product. The effects of temperature, coal particle size, addition of ferric chloride and preheating of the concentrate in argon on the reduction kinetics and mechanism were determined. The rate of reduction increased significantly with temperature and was enhanced by the addition of the catalyst. The morphology of the iron was primarily determined by the degree of weathering of the particle. Significant coarsening of iron was obtained in the dense particles by the addition of ferric chloride. The sequence of reduction and the enhancement in the rate of reduction by preheating the concentrate in an inert atmosphere are discussed.

Before proceeding I wish to say that the excellent diagrams by which my paper is illustrated are the work of Mr. C. H. Barnes, Constructing Engineer of the Kalgurli Gold Mines Limited, and I am also much indebted to Mr. F. A. Moss, manager of the mine and for the privilege piIling information not previously made public.The limited time at my disposal has coolled to, curtail the scope of my paper to a few practices in ore treatment which are being worked on the Kalgurli Mine, but which I believe are of more than ordinary interest to thp~e Goncerned in modern treatment of gold ores. As an introduction to my subject it is, necessary that I should give a brief outline of the process by whiGh the gold is won from the complex sulpho-telluride ore of the Kalguili mine.My business is not to enter into any discussion as to the relative merits of the two rival sulpho-telluride ore treatment processes at work on the Kalgoorlie field, viz, the treatment of the unroasted ore after shining by solutions of bromocyanide, as against the treatment of the ore-after roasting by solutions of potassium or sodium cyanide either in filter presses or percolating sand vats. Even if reliable costs and percentages of extractions were obtainable in each case, it would not constitute an infallible basis of comparison, as the larger plants would necessarily have an advantage in cost per ton as against the small plants, and the other conditions obtaining are in many Cases dissimilar.

The Logatchev hydrothermal field is situated on the east inner flank of the rift valley of the MAR at 14°45?N and is hosted by serpentinized peridotites and minor gabbronorites while basalts are subordinate. Hydrothermal precipitates recovered from the Logatchev field during a recent R/V Meteor cruise include massive chalcopyrite chimneys, massive pyrite crusts, silicified breccias, abundant secondary Cu-sulfides, red jaspers, abundant Fe-Mn-oxyhydroxides as well as atacamite and Mn-oxides (Kuhn et al., 2004). Previous results of hydrothermal fluid studies in the Logatchev field are somewhat at odds with theoretical models of ultramafic-seawater reaction. Butterfield et al. (2003) suggested that the Fe component of orthopyroxene plays the more important role compared to olivine in ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems. This consideration is supported by the recovery of large amounts of Opx-rich gabbronorites and orthopyroxenites in the Logatchev field (Kuhn et al., 2004). A possible tool to constrain the contribution of the different rock types (ultramafics, mafics, MORB) to a seafloor hydrothermal system is the systematic analysis of 187/188Os ratios of the host rocks as educts and the sulfides as products. For instance, abyssal peridotites mainly display low 187/188Os ratios (<0.127); in contrast MORB and gabbronorites have radiogenic ratios of >0.13 (Snow and Reisberg, 1995), orthopyroxenite has ratios of about 0.174 (Büchl et al., 2002) and seawater has an ever higher 187/188Os of about 1 (Sharma et al., 1997). Therefore, massive sulfides predominantly leached from ultramafic rocks should have Os isotopic ratios plotting on a mixing line between the ultramafic rocks and seawater (in a 187/188Os vs. 1/Os diagram), whereas those derived from MORB, gabbronorites and/or orthopyroxenites will be plotting on different mixing lines.

LKAB operates an underground iron ore mine in Malmberget in the northern part of Sweden. Twelve different orebodies are mined today using both longitudinal and transversal sublevel caving as mining method. The town of Malmberget is located close to the mining area. The need for urban transformation, moving people and houses, is evident for many reasons. The mining methods used have inherent subsidence issues and there are also vibrations from blasting and mine induced seismic events.

As part of a long-term acid rock drainage (ARD) mitigation study, PT Freeport Indonesia has completed the construction of a highly instrumented, full-scale, experimental, overburden stockpile to further evaluate the behaviour of the waste rock system at Grasberg mine. A total of 24 lysimeters, 30 sets of thermistor strings and 48 oxygen-sampling ports were installed at select locations during stockpile construction. ARD flow rates and chemistry have been recorded since the start of overburden rock placement in April 2000. Measurements of in situ temperatures and oxygen concentrations quantify reaction rates and the oxygen pathways that control oxidation kinetics deep within the waste rock profile. Direct field observations show the significance of advective oxygen flow with respect to the onset of oxidation kinetics. Oxygen measurements show that the rubble zone that forms at the base of a waste rock bench provides a critical pathway for oxygen entry to the waste rock profile. Furthermore, rapid oxidation as evidenced by measured temperature increases deep within the panels of waste rock is observed to occur. The observations presented in this paper provide critical insight for understanding the mechanisms and behaviour of full-scale waste rock stockpiles with respect to ARD generation. The results of this program will assist in the future selection, testing and evaluation of appropriate mitigation measures with respect to surface and face treatments to reduce long-term ARD generation. This project is a work in progress, and at least another two-years will be required to fully understand site-specific ARD generation and ARD mitigation mechanisms. This paper will discuss various design and construction considerations, provide an overview of results achieved to date, and some preliminary interpretation of what is happening within the overburden stockpiles.

The Kyzyl-Tashtyg massive sulfide polymetallic deposit is situated 120 km north-east of Kyzyl (the capital of Tuva Republic, Russia). It is located in the Ulug-O volcanic zone which is interpreted as the northern segment of the Kaa-Khem rift in Sayano-Tuva marginal sea, one of the Paleoasian Ocean margin (Fig. 1) [Zaykov, 2006]. Since its discovery in 1946 the deposit has been studied by many researchers. Significant information was published by Kuzebny et al. [2001] and Zaykov [2006] who proposed volcanogenic-sedimentary genesis. A single reference in English about Kyzyl-Tashtyg is available [Herrington et al., 1999].

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 350 natural gas samples from 19 States collected during calendar year 1962 as part of a continuous survey of the United States for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted by the Helium Activity of the Bureau of Mines since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus. Four previous publications have been made to present the results of 5,648 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines, Helium Activity, prior to 1962. The first, Bulletin 486, 3/ contains analyses and data on 2,195 gas samples collected during the period 1917-47. Bulletin 576, 4/ the second publication, includes data and analyses for 1,575 samples collected from 1947 through May 1956. The third bulletin 5/ contains 1,444 analyses and source data of samples obtained from May 1956 to January 1, 1961.

In the summer of 1957,9 the University of California sponsored a World Conference on Prestressed Concrete in San Francisco to which were invited a number of Soviet engineers. While attending the conference, these engineers in turn asked the University to form a delegation of American engineers to visit the Soviet Union the following year for the purpose of studying Soviet advances in concrete technology. A six man delegation was formed, and the dates of the Russian tour fixed for May 10th through May 21st, 1958. Before arriving in the Soviet Union, the American Delegation attended the Third International Congress on Prestressed Concrete in Berlin. While there, we noticed that the delegation from the U. S. S. R. used displays and showed motion pictures of many construction projects which we later were shown in Moscow. Our delegation left East Berlin by Russian aircraft on May 11th, and arrived in Moscow that afternoon. We were met by our Russian engineer hosts from The Academy of Construction&apos; and Architecture who made all subsequent arrangements for our itinerary. This Academy has no counterpart in the United States. It. does 40 per cent of all engineering-and scientific work in the building construction field and coordinates 60 per cent of that done by other Soviet agencies. Due to the prestige of the Academy in Russian affairs, our delegation was able to obtain a surprisingly broad picture of construction activities in Moscow and Leningrad in just ten days time

The Bureau of Mines devised a direct flotation method for recovering potash from carnallite (KC1?MgC12?6H20) ore characterized by a high content of water-insoluble impurities. The method includes (1) a decomposition leach of the carnallite, (2) flocculation-depression of the insoluble slimes, (3) potash rougher, cleaner, and recleaner flotation, and (4) final product leaching. The technique eliminates the necessity for removing the water-insoluble slimes by mechanical or flotation de-sliming. Laboratory results demonstrated that the direct flotation procedure, when compared with conventional techniques, yielded equivalent or improved flotation results with equal or less reagent consumption. Locked-cycle testing of the direct flotation method recovered 87.8 pct of the potassium in the flotation feed in a final product containing 60.6 pct K20. A flowsheet incorporating the carnallite leaching-potash flotation procedure is presented.

Rate of gas diffusion in reservoir oil has been investigated in an effort to explain the variation in oil characteristics observed in the Weber Sandstone reservoir, Rangely field, Colorado. Coefficients of gas diffusion were determined experimentally for the Rangely oil system and used in a mathematical simulation of gas diffusion during the probable life of the Rangely reservoir, estimated at 65 million years. The simulator involved solution of Fick&apos;s law for diffusion in two dimensions by the method of finite difference and successive over-relaxation. The results show that continuing gas diffusion is a logical explanation for the variation in oil characteristics at Rangely and that the pattern of gas distribution by diffusion in an asymmetrical reservoir will not conform to structural contours as originally proposed.

IT is known that austenitic chromium-nickel steels that have free carbide in the grain boundaries are subject to intergranular corrosion. It is difficult to detect such a susceptible condition in a fabricated article because present test methods require a sample section for examination and in most cases this is difficult to obtain. The question of the nature and prevention of intergranular corrosion in austenitic stainless steels have been ably discussed by Bain and co-workers1-3 and by other investigators.4-10 The present methods of study subject samples to corrosive conditions in such reagents as the Strauss solution, a. mixture of copper sulphate and sulphuric acid. Such tests usually require at least 72 hr. to run. Various methods of measuring the degree of sensitization have been employed, such as the measurement of electrical resistivity, magnetic measurements, measurement of the degree of cracking produced on bending over a mandrel, and microscopic studies. The detection of carbides at the grain boundaries by metallographic polishing and etching methods is tedious and requires a skilled operator. A recent report on such methods of carbide detection is given by the American Society for Testing Materials Subcommittee VI of Committee A-10 11 and by Arness.12 The present investigation was undertaken to develop a simple test procedure for detecting carbide precipitation or susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. The test is designed for use in the plant and for the testing of fabricated structures. Carbide precipitation, the factor leading to susceptibility to corrosion, is produced by heating the alloy in the temperature range 800° to 1600°F., as in welding, in improper annealing or in service where such temperatures are met. The connection between such precipitation and susceptibility to corrosion has been thoroughly discussed, as has been the use of stabilizing addition elements to prevent precipitation. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD A small area of the steel under test is subjected to an anodic treatment in a cell that can be clamped onto a sample or an actual structure. The cell and electrical circuit used are illustrated in Fig. I. The cell C is lead, joined to the steel plate D and insulated from it by a short piece of rubber tubing E. The cell is forced tightly against the steel plate by a spring or clamping device. The seal formed by the rubber against the steel plate is sufficient to retain the liquid bath inside the cell. The spot treated can be made any shape desired, depending on the shape of the rubber gasket. The cell illustrated polishes a circular spot about 3/8-in. diameter. The bath consists of 60 per cent (by weight) sulphuric acid to which is added 5 ml. per liter of Glycyrrhiza extract (U.S.P.). The cell requires about 2 to 2.5

INTRODUCTION CIVIL engineers are primarily interested in maximum core recovery. This is even more important in foundation work than in mining investigations where sludge samples are of some value. The soft materials, such as clay, gouge, or partially decomposed seams that are most readily ground up or washed away, are the materials that usually have the greatest influence on foundation and leakage conditions. Undisturbed samples of such materials should be obtained for detailed geological examination and laboratory tests. Therefore the attainable goal of sampling in connection with foundation investigations is the recovery of 99.9 pct of undisturbed core. FACTORS CAUSING CORE LOSSES The principal factors contributing to core losses are: (I) coring badly fractured or very soft material; (2) use of improperly designed coring equipment, including the use of bits of too small a diameter; (3) lack of the proper training and attitude on the part of the drillers and pertinent technical information on the part of the supervising personnel. Little can be done about the character of the material being cored but the other two factors contributing to unsatisfactory performance can be corrected. Although the title of this paper is the improvement and standardization of core barrels, it is believed that the drillers&apos; shortcomings and the lack of pertinent technical literature are more detrimental to good core recovery than either of the other factors. USES FOR LARGE DIAMETER CORE BARRELS It is well known that the use of larger diameter bits and core barrels generally produce better cores, particularly when sampling soft or broken material. The use of larger and larger bit diameters and the insistence on better core recovery is well demonstrated by the change in practices of the various districts of the Corps of Engineers. Today NX core is the smallest diameter commonly permitted for investigational work and the more active districts are using coring bits up to 6 in. in diameter, as well as 36 and 40-in. calyx rigs. The latter size has proved to be just as economical because it provides more room for core removal and cleanup operations. The use of large diameter cores to replace the driving and jacking methods of obtaining soil samples is also increasing. The 5 7/8-in. Denison sampler, developed by H. L. Johnson to obtain samples from soft formations, is one example. The principal uses for bits larger than NX are: sampling soils and semi-consolidated rock; sampling decomposed rock or rock with soft seams; sampling concrete; obtaining samples for laboratory tests; drilling drainage holes, and other miscellaneous work. I have continued the investigation of the Pottstown Iron Com pany&apos;s basic Bessemer keel plates on the line referred to in my paper of last October (Trans., xxi., 766)) and have added a study of the hardening effects of sulphur, which were not taken into account at that time. The results are so encouraging that I now give them in full. For some months we have graded all the steel at these works by the table given in my former paper, and checked the grading by the forging-tests as described in the paper of Mr. Joseph Hartshorne, read at the same meeting (Trans., xxi., 748). The steel thus graded was bloomed for the plate orders. Then one slab was rolled into a plate for the order, and a tension-test was made of this plate. By the result of this tension-test we were guided in rolling the balance of the heat. Out of several hundred heats graded in this manner, 95 per cent. met the requirements of the orders in every respect, and were accepted; but these results will no doubt be improved upon, when the influence of sulphur is also considered.. The hardening effect of sulphur seems to be about 500 pounds per each .01 per cent. of increase. In the table accompanying the pres ent paper, the ultimate strength with .06.5 per cent. sulphur agrees with the old table where sulphur was not considered; that is, for all steels with less than .065 per cent. sulphur we now get lower re sults, and for those with more sulphur, higher results. Making this allowance for sulphur, the assumed ultimate strength of a 3/8-inch plate of pure iron is reduced from 38,000 pounds per square inch to 34,750 pounds. With this as a basis, I have constructed my new table, giving each of the elements, carbon, phosphorus and manganese the same hardening effect as before, to wit : Carbon is credited with a constant effect of 800 pounds per each, 0.01 per cent. Phosphorus shows greater effect in high-carbon than in low-carbon steels. For 0.07 and 0.08 C, it has about the same effect as carbon, that is, 800 pounds for each .01 P. This increases to 1500 pounds per .01 P in 0.15 C steel, or nearly twice the effect of carbon. This

Underground coal mining is the most hazardous industrial occupation in the United States.. Haulage accidents in underground coal mines contribute substantially to the occupational hazards of this type of work. In an effort to improve mine safety, a completely hydraulic transport system has been designed to move coal from the mine face to the preparation plant. The capital investment for the hydraulic haulage system is great, and the size of the mine developed for this study is large. Mine production for the conventional haulage mine is 1. 1 million tons of clean coal per year, while the hydraulic haulage mine will produce over 1.6 million tons of clean coal per year. Safety statistics for a number of mines of this size are shown.
