18.1-RAILROAD JOHN W. BRAUNS Conventional railroad haulage can be employed at both open-pit or strip and underground mines-in the latter case, largely for transfer of ore from distant openings to processing plants, or processed material to loading points or docks, using standard hopper cars for bottom unloading or gondolas for rotary dumping. The major application, however, is in surface mining for moving ore and/or waste out of the pit to a crushing plant or dump. Consequently, the following will deal largely with this phase of railroad operation, though the conclusions apply equally, for the most part, to other rail-type surface haulage. In surface mining, trains consisting of a locomotive and gondola or side-dump cars suitable for loading by power shovels are used. Gondolas are restricted to hauling ore as a rotary dumper is required. Side-dump cars are more versatile, carrying both ore and waste, but because of their additional dumping mechanism they are likely to be more expensive to maintain.' Also they weigh up to twice a flat-bottom car of the same capacity and. therefore, fewer" cars can be hauled per train. Standard-gage track is most commonly used. Track systems incorporate low-quality temporary track where moves are frequent and permanent high-quality track on main lines. Rail haulage can be used alone, or in combination with other surface haulage methods, thus permitting a selection best adapted to the peculiar requirements of each mining project. 18.1.1---GENERAL APPLICABILITY, CONTROLLING PHYSICAL CONDITIONS For handling rough rock, the shovel-train system is unexcelled.' The ideal applica¬tion is in a large, but not excessively deep, open pit mine from which the coarsely blasted ore and waste must be transported over 3 mi. If. in addition, a high production rate is to he maintained, railroad haulage probably will afford a lower cost per ton transported. Grade must he relatively gentle-usually 3% uphill and 4% downhill. The greater the differences in elevation involved, the greater are the track grade space requirements; for example, a 3 c ramp out of a pit only 300 ft deep is almost 2 mi long. Main-line track locations should he selected carefully so that the number of moves during the life of the mining operation can he kept to a minimum. This applies both to the ore haulageway and that for waste. Such moves are not only expensive, but are difficult to execute without adversely affecting production rates. The large mine affords greater opportunities for judicious location of semipermanent trackage. Figs. 18-1 and 18-2 illustrate typical track layouts. The effect of terrain in considering railroad haulage is confined chiefly to the initial cost of the installation. Grade construction in mountainous territory is ap¬preciably more expensive. However, if that expense can be borne, the subsequent maintenance cost of trackage will not he much higher than in areas of low relief.

Oil bearing rocks, usually found at depths of 2,000 to 10,000 it, are elastically deformed by overburden pressure. Although the change in porosity with pressure in a number of example rock.: has been shown to be small, it was thought that overburden pressure might have a significant effect on permeability. This note presents results of an investigation to determine the magnitude of the change in permeabilty with pressure. In routine core analysis permeabilities are measured on rock samples which are not under overburden pressure. If permeablity measured in this way differs from permeabilities measured under overburden pressure, a systematic error is introduced into well productivity calculations. The experiments described in this report were made to determine the magnitude of the change and thus to give an estimate of the error introduced into the calculations. The error introduced by the neglect of the change in permeability when overburden pressure is removed may account for part of the difference between well productivity calculated from core analysis and the actual well productivity. The results obtained in this investigation have only quali-tative significance because of the difficulty in reproducing in the laboratory the stress conditions on the rock buried in the earth. The assumption which is usually made is that the rocks in the earth are under a uniform pressure equal to the weight per unit area of the vertical overburden column from the rock in question to the surface of the earth less the pressure of the liquid in the pores of the rock. For an overburden consisting of sandstones and shales (of assumed average specific gravity of 2.3) and for a liquid pressure equal to the pressure in a salt water column (of specific gravity 1.0) reaching from the rock to the surface, the resulting net pressure on the rock is approximately 0.56 psi per ft of depth. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Clean, dry sandstone core plugs one in. in diameter and about three in. long were mounted in a copper foil jacket as shown in Fig. 3 or molded in a Lucite jacket as shown in Fig. 4. All cores except those labeled "2" in Fig. 1 and "8" in Fig. 2 were measured in the copper foil jacket. Cores "2" and "8" were measured in the Lucite jacket. The jacketed core was placed in a high pressure hydraulic bomb in which the liquid pressure outside the jacket could be raised to 15,000 psi. Flow lines from the core were brought out of the bomb through special fittings in the bomh head and connected to a laboratory type gas permeameter. Measurements were made with nitrogen gas; the maximum mean gas pressure in the core was 16.1 psia. RESULTS The specific permeability of sandstone decreases with in. crease in overburden pressure. Most of the decrease takes place over the range of zero to 3,000 psi overburden pressure. If the net pressure on the rock is assumed to be 0.56 psi per ft of depth as discussed above, 3,000 psi of overburden pressure is equivalent to about 5,000 ft of overburden. At 3,000 psi overburden pressure, the permeability of the eight sandstone core samples tested ranged from 59 to 89 per cent of the permeability without overburden pressure. Figs. 1 and 2 show the permeability reduction as a function of overburden pressure. The permeability of the eight cores without overburden pressure ranged from 4.35 md to 632 md; these permeabilities are listed in Figs. 1 and 2. REFERENCES 1. "In the present study effect of grinding media on flotation of two mineral systems have been investigated, viz. sulphide minerals (including a pure chalcopyrite and pyrite mineral, and two different base metal sulphide ores), and oxide minerals (quartz, hematite and cassiterite). It was shown that mild steel media milling produced lower recoveries in the case of chalcopyrite and pyrite, as compared to the case of milling using ceramic media. For oxide minerals, the effects of using mild steel media as opposed to ceramic media were not as significant as was for the sulphides, although, after mild steel milling, at acidic pHs their recoveries were significantly reduced. For two base metal sulphide ores, viz. Nkomati and Dexing ores, the differences resulting from different milling media , although marginal, were opposite for each of these ores.For oxide minerals XPS showed that oxides and hydroxides of iron (e.g. FeOOH) adsorbed on the surfaces of the minerals. In the case of the Nkomati ore, adding Fe2+ or F3+ ions after milling with chrome steel media resulted in reduced talc (gangue) recovery, but increased water recovery and reduced concentrate grades. Further investigations are currently in progress to examine the Fe ions effect on the talc surfaces and froth properties.INTRODUCTIONGrinding of ores is necessary to liberate the valuable minerals from its gangues to allow for their selective recovery during mineral processing such as flotation. The grinding process inevitably involves contact of the ores with the surface of the grinding device and the grinding media. Accompanied by grinding, several phenomena can occur including the grinding medium wear, formation of precipitated species on the ore surfaces, chemical reaction, galvanic effects, changes in the Eh of solution, etc. There is a considerable body of literature on the differences observed in the flotation of various ores after milling using various grinding media. Laboratory studies have used balls or rods made from mild steel, ceramic, stainless steel or chrome steel to investigate the effects of different grinding media on mineral flotation. It is found that the interactions between the ore and the grinding environment can affect flotation separation of sulphide (Wei and Sandenbergh, 2007; Bruckard, 2011), oxide (He et al., 2014) and carbonate minerals (Song, 2009 and 2010). For example, mild steel milling produces relatively high concentrations of Fe ions in the pulp, affecting the recoveries of minerals compared to the case of ceramic media. On the other hand, the stainless steel media or chrome media are reported to be beneficial to the recovery of sulphides, when compared to the cases of using mild or carbon steel media (Rey and Formanek, 1960; Peng et al., 2003a,b; Huang and Grano, 2006; Bruckard, 2011). It is not clear, however, whether these Fe ions may affect the surface properties of the minerals involved or the general pulp/froth behaviour and hence their floatability. In addition, in the study of an low-S PGE ore carried out by Miettunen et al. (2012), forged media grinding in the CO2 atmosphere led to the highest Pt and Pd grades and recoveries, but the high chrome grinding media gave lower flotation recoveries than those using the forged media."

The Bureau of Mines investigated a promising new technology for recovering A1203 from alunite to support the Bureau's alumina miniplant project. Results are presented for a study of the technical feasibility of treating alunite crushing and grinding reject fines for recovery of A1203. Alunite pellets having sufficient strength and resistance to degradation were produced by combining fines and coarse alunite with a KOH binder. The best pellets were prepared, in a laboratory pelletizer, by adding 1 pct KOH as a 5-pct solution to a mixture of 40 pct alunite dust (98 pct minus 65 mesh) and 60 pct coarse alunite (minus 20 plus 65 mesh). Calcines suitable for K2SO4 and A1203 recovery were produced by reducing dehydrated alunite pellets with sulfur in a laboratory shaft furnace for 4 h at 600° C, followed by air oxidation of the reduced calcine for 1 h at 600° C. This report presents design calculations, schematic diagrams, and discussions of the essential features of a proposed process research unit (PRU)--a continuous, 6-lb/h alunite shaft furnace--for studying the process.

The iron-silicon alloy series has always been one of the most puzzling among the binary alloys. Examining the well-known mechanical properties of the iron-rich alloys only we meet the following situation: The ultimate strength and yield point of alloys worked and annealed under the usual conditions represent nearly a straight line function of the silicon content up to 1.5 per cent. silicon (Fig. I). Starting at the ultimate strength of 35,000 lb. and at a yield point of 16,000 lb. for pure electrolytic iron, one reaches a maximurn strength of 93,000 lb. and a maximum yield point of 74,000 lb. at 4.5 per cent. silicon. This corresponds to an increase in ultimate strength by 13,000 lb, per each per cent. of silicon added and nearly the same rate applies to the yield point. The data mentioned are taken from the investigation by T. D. Yensen,1 and while they do not exactly corroborate the results obtained by earlier investigators, they seem to be the most correct. Plastic properties of the alloys are controlled by a much more complicated relationship. Up to 2..5 per cent. Si, the elongation stays close to 50 per cent. (in 2 in.) and the area reduction amounts to 85 per cent., a situation that forms the usual feature of all alloys representing strictly solid solutions. The plasticity of the latter is always nearly equal to that of their base metal. Beyond 2.5 per cent. silicon, the situation becomes much more complicated. Yensen observed an enormous drop in elongation and area reduction at about 2.65 per cent. silicon, where the first hardly reaches 10 per cent. and the second is still lower; he found, however, a considerable recovery in plasticity at about 2.8 per cent. Si and up to 1.5 per cent. Si it is represented by 20 per cent. for the elongation and 30 per cent. for area reduction. Yensen's graphs, as shown in Fig. 1, indicate also a considerable drop in strength and yield point at the same point of 2.65 per cent. Si,

"A detailed study of the compositional relationships of the Uand Th-bearing minerals in Elliot Lake uranium ores has been conducted, particularly with regard to uranothorite, which clearly plays a critical role in hydrometallurgical processing. Application of the rotating disc progressive-leaching technique to individual mineral grains and intergrowths of known compositions has defined for the first time the solubilization behaviour ofthe minerals in question.In descending order of leachability, regardless of leaching conditions, the phases are: uranothorite, uraninite, and monazite. Inclusions of secondary uranothorite enhance the dissolution kinetics of uraninite, which exhibits a complex dissolution mode. U-rich uranothorite dissolves more readily than Th-rich. Monazite is soluble in HJ)04 and HCI solutions only at temperatures exceeding 85°C. Consequently, it is deduced that the 15% to 20% of thorium not leached from the ore is lost both as monazite and as uranothorite inclusions locked in monazite which persists to the tailings. INTRODUCTIONThe importance of precise information on the mineralogy of ore and gangue constituents for the optimization of metal recovery in hydrometa Uurgical processing has been recognized for some years (e.g. Burkin, 1969), and numerous investigations integrating mineralogical studies and experimental leaching have been reported for ores of gold, nickel, copper and uranium (see summary by Henley, 1983). The complex mineralogy of uranium ores hosted by Precambrian pyritiferous, quartz-pebble, conglomerates has prompted particular attention in this regard (e.g. Liebenberg, 1956; Liebenberg and Taverner, 1958; Feather and Snegg, 1978). In the great majority of documented studies, however, petrographic examination has been followed by bulk leaching, an approach which, although providing valuable information, does not permit precise definition of the evolution of mineral dissolution processes. The authors contend that experimentation involving the step-by-step leaching and mineralogical study of ores is more likely to reveal the actual dissolution events which control the release of metals and, hence, may better define the optimal conditions for hydrometallurgical processing. Such studies (e.g. Hausen, 1983; Horlick et al., 1981) in addition lend themselves to the prediction of changes in the leaching behaviour of ores in which one or more mineralogical feature is subject to modification, a common characteristic of mineral deposits."

Developments since 1959 in major excavators to meet the high outputs of overburden and coal under the changing nature of the Morwell Coal Deposits of the Latrobe Valley are described. Particular reference is made to investigations of designs of the bucket wheel head configurations for the digging of flat batters on high faces, and examples are given of the wide use ofmodelsin these studies.An explanation is given of considerations leading to selection of the Long Boom or the Compact type of bucket wheel excavator for various applications. The past decade has seen increasing manufacture in Australia of components for excavators and similar machines. The measures undertaken to integrate these components with those from overseas (Germany) are described. A section of the paper deals with advances in Electrical Engineering for large excavators in Australia and its interdependenee with mechanical design and construction. Finally, as an example of the versatility of the bucket wheel excavator a description is given of a recent application for the mining of mineral sands in Northern N.S.W.

Although Tantalum is not usually regarded as a precious metal, its pricing structure is very similar to that of Silver. Different from precious metals, Tantalum has only industrial applications and its use is about 1000 metric tons per year. The intrinsic value of Tantalum already in .the past was a driving force for its recycling. Based on these facts the Tantalum industry world-wide is approaching the closed-loop concept of its recycling. A detailed material flow of Tantalum processing as well as recovery of residues and used products will be discussed.

Walker at the time President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an institution familiarly known as M. I. T. I immediately proceeded to take advantage of that privilege by departing for Steelton, Pennsylvania, where I understood I was eagerly awaited by the educated officials of the Pennsylvania Steel Company. I was some. what disappointed at the casualness of my reception and at being tucked away in that preserve closet of steel works known as the chemical laboratory. "This paper considers four aspects of autogenous grinding. Part 1 discusses statements on power efficiency of autogenous grinding compared to conventional crushing and grinding systems. It also demonstrates how high-power efficiency can be obtained from autogenous grinding systems. Part 2 considers a simple method of testing ores to determine the type of autogenous plant which can treat these ores on a commercial basis. A comparison of testing for simple small plants vs large plants or complex ores is included. Part 3 considers important aspects which have to be considered in proper design of an autogenous grinding system. Part 4 discusses problem ores and how they can be treated in an autogenous system. INTRODUCTIONAfter about 35 years of using autogenous grinding plants in the mining industry, it is perhaps time to review where we are with this, by now, relatively old development. Autogenous grinding in this paper means grinding run-of-mine ore by fully autogenous means or by using a ball charge to assist the grinding (semi-autogenous). Also, autogenous grinding can be eitherby dry or wet.The use of autogenous grinding in the fifties was making its slow start, and it was not until the sixties that more of the mining industry would consider its use . By the seventies, most builders of new plants would have considered autogenous grinding, whether they used it or not, in the final design.In the eighties, most large plants use autogenous mills and to reduce over-all operating costs, many older conventional plants are now looking and actually retrofitting these old plants with autogenous grinding mills.It is evident that many misconceptions concerning autogenous grinding are still current. Some come from improperly designed plants which result from poor test work. There are many considerations in the proper design of autogenous plants. Some ores have been found to give problems even in a well designed plant. These ore types are beginning to be classified and recognition in the test stage allows steps to be taken in the design so that these ores can be efficiently handled in autogenous grinding plants.Therefore, this paper will address the following aspects of autogenous grinding:1. Misconceptions regarding autogenous grinding.2. Testing of ores to ensure a well designed commercial plant.3. Important considerations in mill design.4. Difficult ores, their recognition and types of design to handle such ores."

Clinoptilolites, modified with sodium, produced a material which has been tested for the ability to remove Hg (II) from aqueous nitric acid. The amount of adsorption depends on contact time, acid concentration of aqueous solution and initial mercury concentration. The study of the kinetics of mercury uptake revealed that all sorbents exhibit a fast rate of sorption. The highest sorption capacities were observed for sodium forms, and were up to five times higher than for the unmodified zeolite. The maximum sorption capacity toward mercury is determined as 0.093 ¦g/g at an initial concentration of 10.0 ¦g/L for a clinoptilolite from Tsagaantsav deposit (Mongolia). The sorption of Hg (II) has an ion-exchange nature and consists of three stages, ie the adsorption on the surface of microcrystals, the inversion stage and the ion exchange in the interior of the microcrystal. Sorption capacity decreases with the increase of mercury concentration. The presence of other metal ions such as Cd (II), Cu (II), Ni (II) and Zn (II) increases Hg (II) uptake capacity. Finally, sorption for Hg (II) was investigated in batch systems to evaluate the short-term stability of the sorption properties.

Hong Kong is an intensively developed region and has the highest vehicle densities in the world. In 2000 there were 6.6 million people and 580,000 vehicles using 1,890 km of road covering the 1084 km 2 territory. The high vehicle and population densities together with the difficult terrain have seen road tunnels emerge as key components both in the current and future road transportation network. Currently there are eleven operating highway tunnels in Hong Kong, seven government owned and the remaining four “build, operate and transfer” franchises, see Figure 1. The very first tunnel was the dual two Lions Rock Tunnel completed in 1967and the latest the dual 3 lane Tai Lam Tunnel opened in mid 1998. Figure 2 shows the alignment and statistics for all 11 Hong Kong tunnels. Looking ahead, Hong Kong has embarked on the study and design of the next generation of major highways and as many as a further seven tunnels are currently under feasibility study or detailed design. This seems an opportune year to produce a broad appreciation of the fire strategy, life safety and ventilation practices in Hong Kong not only for the existing tunnels but the new standards and requirements for the next generation of Hong Kong tunnels. This paper provides an overview of the fire strategy, life safety and ventilation of Hong Kong’s existing and planned tunnels. The paper pays particular attention to the areas where the unique conditions and requirements in Hong Kong impacts on tunnel and systems design and the solutions adopted to overcome these challenges.

Mining operations of Freeport Indonesia (FI) are located approximately 4 degrees -6' south latitude, 137 -7' east longitude in Irian Jaya the eastern most state of Indonesia (Figure I). The mines are located approximately 96 km (60 miles) from coast in the Carstenz Mountain range. The ore bodies are between 2900 and 4000 meters (9500 and 13 000 ft) elevation.

MANY hundreds of publications have appeared during the past 78 years that treat the subject of hydrogen in iron and steel,105 but conclusions regarding the functions of hydrogen in causing some important defects in steel are still unsatisfactory to many; and other hydrogen-caused phenomena yet remain to be identified with this gas. The most widely discussed of these defects is hydrogen embrittlement, but the conception, perhaps the popular one, that embrittlement is due to hydride formation does not conform to the known facts.104 The true identity of hydrogen embrittlement seems instead to lie in a mosaic nature of metal crystals, which is a concept not yet accepted by most metallurgists. A study of hydrogen embrittlement therefore provides new viewpoints in regard to the crystalline substructure of steel. A second widely discussed hydrogen-caused defect is the "flake" or "shatter crack." Although it is generally agreed that the presence of hydrogen is a prerequisite for their appearance, it is also realized that internal stress plays a decisive part. The relationship of hydrogen to internal stress has not been explained very clearly; nor is it always clear what the relationship is between a "flake" and a "snowflake," or between a "fish eye" and a "shatter crack." More importantly, the relationships among hydrogen embrittlement, hydrogen-caused fissures such as "flakes" and the ultramicroscopic structure of steel have scarcely been recognized. The present investigation attempts to provide an explanation for the embrittlement of steel by hydrogen by showing cause for accepting the "block" concept of metal crystals, and then to show how the numerous hydrogen-caused defects are interrelated in the light of this concept. EVIDENCE OF SUBSTRUCTURE IN METAL CRYSTALS It appears that the concept of a crystal as an aggregate of smaller multi-atom units must be accepted in some form if the behavior of metals is to be understood. The abundant literature on the evidence of an ultramicroscopic "mosaic" structure in metals and other crystalline substances suggests that the physicist has provided the metallurgist with an invaluable new insight. The exact picturization that any one physicist provides may be open to question, but the fact that there is some such fundamental substructure seems undeniable. The present work makes no pretense of comprehensively treating the imperfection structure theories. Nor will conclusions be drawn here regarding the exact nature of the substructure of crystals. However, the acceptance of some imperfection theory of fundamental attributes seems so necessary to an understanding of the behavior of hydrogen in steel that the following brief

Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating hardrock mine, Grace Mine, located near Morgantown, Pennsylvania. Diesel-powered haulage equipment is used in this mine, and the electromagnetic noise environment it creates was measured to see how it differs from the environment created by electric-powered haulage equipment. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief time periods. Data are recorded using broadband analog magnetic tape and are later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise amplitudes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of time to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and in amplitude probability distribution plots.

The operating lifetime, or production rate, selected for a mining project is among the most important factors influencing the project's design and ultimate economic success. Incorrectly-determined lifetimes can lead to the erroneous rejection of projects as uneconomic as well as the suboptimal exploitation of producing properties. This paper examines the optimal lifetime calculation using traditional discounted cash flow and recently-proposed option pricing techniques. Using each method, the production rate is determined as that rate at which the project's net present value is maximized.

A satisfactory mean: of beneficiating a Brazilian phosphate rock was developed in a mineral-dressing-research study by the Bureau of Mines. High-grade concentrates well ever the specified minimum grade of 70 percent tricalcium phosphate, were produced, with goad recoveries by agglomerate tabling and flotation. A lower gads but usable secondary product was recovered by sedimentation of the minus-200-mesh fraction of the ore. The ore wan representative of an extensive deposit recently discovered near Recife in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil, which will be exploited in a plant planned to eventually produce at the rate of 500,000 tons of concentrate annually. Although Brazil has been reported to Lave a substantial reserve of phosphate rock,3/ the country has never been more than a small producer of this commodity. From 1945 to 1950 the highest production of phosphate rock attained in Brazil amounted to 10,421 tons. Production in 1949, the most recent year for which figures are available, was 4,553 tons.4/

COUNTRIES of the Near East, with the world's largest and insist prolific petroleum resources, produced nearly 277 percent of the world's estimated total output of crude& oil in 1964 and accounted for about 60 percent of world exports of this commodity. Although petroleum largely dominated the mineral industry of tine area, production of antimony, chromium, copper, mercury, boron, potash, and phosphate rock was of world significance. Production of crude oil in Near East countries reached a record high of 7,520,000 barrels per day in 1964, an increase of nearly 11 percent over that of 1963. Kuwait maintained its position as the leading producer, accounting for almost 28 percent of the area's output. Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Iraq followed with 22.5, 22.2, and 16.5 percent of total area output, respectively. Despite record production, the Near East, proved crude oil reserve remained in excess of 211 billion barrels, or more than two-thirds of the estimated world proved crude oil reserve.
