"In order to be able to map the variation in the concentration of elements in soils, it is necessary to sample at intervals that will give adequate coverage of the area and will allow determination of the rate of fluctuation of concentration with distance in any environment. This rate of fluctuation with distance can be referred to as the continuity of concentration.The continuity of concentration in soils varies according to the chemical characteristics of the element being considered, the underlying rock type or orebody and in response to the dispersion processes that operated during soil formation. Within any environment there is a maximum distance between sampling points within which adjacent sample values are related. This distance, the critical sampling interval, can be determined by means of a correlograrm.Where the sampling grid has been chosen to provide an adequate coverage over unmineralized rock, adjacent samples being related, anomalies may be missed if the element continuity in the anomaly is less than in the background. Results show that a knowledge of the critical sampling interval of the environment being examined may used to select a more efficient sampling pattern for a geochemical survey."

J. T. LITTLETON, JR., ? Corning, N. Y. (written discussion?).-This. discussion will add little that has not been brought out but will show how the problems encountered in the Corning Glass Works were overcome. The chief points of consideration in any equipment are, first, the work the equipment is called upon to do; second, the installation; and, third, the man who will use it. These three points should determine the type of apparatus adopted. If only rough measurements, merely a little better than the eye, are desired, the cost of the instruments should be considered; but if accurate temperature control is necessary, the cost of the equipment deserves only small consideration. There is no question that the real problem for any factory is the installation, making sure that the elements really give the temperatures desired; also, the instruments must be so designed that any man can use them.

IN developing a consistent picture of the thermal expansion of the commercial chromium steels, which cover a range of carbon contents, it is desirable to know the expansion in the limiting case of the binary, carbon-free, iron-chromium alloys. We have, therefore, determined the thermal expansion of a series of five special alloys, ranging in chromium content from 3 to 10.5 per cent, with not more than 0.03 per cent carbon, over a temperature range extending beyond the transformation region; this low carbon content enables us to draw reasonably reliable conclusions as to the behavior of the carbon-free system. Moreover, the measure-ments serve to determine the beginning and the end of the alpha-gamma transformation; and they emphasize once more the fact that a transforma-tion temperature determined by any method in which the specimen is cooled at an appreciable rate is apt to be seriously in error, particularly if the metal contains a transformation-retarding element such as chro-mium or managanese. The lag, or undercooling, observed at the ? - a transformation is explained in terms of the influence of temperature on transformation velocity; the rather unusual shape of the ? loop is attributed to a change with temperature and with composition of the distribution of chromium between the alpha-iron and gamma-iron solid solutions. The exact composition of the alloys which were obtained through the courtesy of Dr. W. Rohn, of the Heraeus Vakuumschmelze A-G., is given in Table 1. Determinations of the linear thermal expansion and of transformation temperature were carried out in the vacuum dila-tometer previously described,1 using a rate of heating and of cooling of 3.0° to 3.5° per minute unless otherwise stated. Magnetic susceptibility, which was measured in studying the rate of transformation, was determined with a magnetic balance, which also has been described.2

The reduction of small, dense zinc oxide (ZnO) samples in CO/CO2, and CO/N2 gas mixtures has been investigated at temperatures between 900 and 1100¦C. The microstructural characterisation of the reacted and partially reduced samples was complemented with measurements of the rates of the reactions. The mechanisms and kinetics of reduction of zinc oxide were found to be dependent upon the CO partial pressure, the oxygen potential of the gas mixtures, temperature and degree of reduction.

"Silicosis was first reported by the ancient Greeks and is apparently as old as human history. The prevalence of this illness peaked in the last half of the 19th century and the early part of this century, when mechanized industry was developing and the relationship between dust exposure and disease was less well understood. Yet, even today in devel-oped countries, sporadic outbreaks of silicosis occur when workers are consistently exposed to silica particles of respir-able size (0.5 to 5.0 µm in diameter) at levels exceeding those recognized to be safe.Silicon dioxide or silica. is the earth's most abundant mineral. Silica is considered to be either free (i.e.. unbound to other minerals) or combined. Minerals with high amounts of free silica include quartz (including granite) flint. Chert, opal, chalcedony, and diatomite. Combined forms of silica are called silicates and include, among others, asbestos talc and kaolin.In the crystalline form, silica exists as quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite (Fig. 28). Of these quartz is ubiquitous in the environment and occurs as sand and as a part of many rocks. Cristobalite and tridymite occur naturally in lava and can be formed by the heating of quartz or amorphous silica. Cristo-balite is more tibrogenic than quartz. Amorphous silica is noncrystalline and, therefore, is relatively nontoxic and does not cause silicosis. It occurs as diatomite (skeletons of pre-historic marine organisms) or as vitreous silica (glass), the result of carefully melting and then quickly cooling free crystalline silica. Heating diatomite with or without alkali (a process known as calcining), forms cristobalite and adds the respiratory toxicity of free crystalline silica.There are many opportunities for occupational exposure to respirable crystalline free silica. Some of the commonly en-countered occupations in which the risk of silicosis exists are reported in Table 20.Silicosis. the pulmonary disease caused by the inhalation of silica particles of respirable size, is most commonly cate-gorized by findings on the chest radiograph. The most typical presentations simple silicosis and progressive massive fibrosis appear different radiologically but are grouped under the category of classic silicosis because they are a part of the radiographic spectrum of this illness. Radiographically, simple silicosis appears as small (less than 10 mm in diameter), rounded opacities, typically predominant in the upper lung zones. Progressive massive fibrosis is the result of the coalescence of these small nodular opacities and appears as larger opacities (more than 10 mm in diameter), again typicallydistributed in the upper lung zones."

The oil industry continued relatively quiet in Wyoming in 1935, although production increased about 8 per cent over the previous year; 55 oil wells were completed in 1935, compared to 34 in 1934, and at the end of the year 44 wells were drilling, 33 in proven fields and 11 in wildcat locations. The total drilling a year ago was only 30. In the year 1935 Wyoming produced a total of 13,451,000 bbl. of oil, a gain of 912,000 bbl. over the 1934 figure of 12,539,000 bbl. Approxi-mately two-thirds of the increase, or 630,000 bbl., was from black oil fields and one-third, or 285,000 bbl., from light oil pools. Salt Creek, with production of 6,357,000 bbl., is still many times the largest field in Wyoming but in 1935 it made less than 50 per cent of the state's total, after producing more than all other fields in the state for 24 years; however, its decline was only 3.8 per cent from the previous year. Oregon Basin, a black oil field, held second place again with production of 1,163,-000 bbl., a good increase over 1934. Grass Creek, with increases in both its light and black oil, jumped into third place; and Lance Creek, with its new Sundance light oil production, was in fourth place in the amount of production. Frannie, which was in third place in 1934, dropped far back on the list because of lack of market. Byron and Garland, two other black oil fields in the Big Horn Basin, increased considerably. Big Muddy, a prominent light-oil field, was down with a natural decline; and Elk Basin, also light oil, produced less because of market conditions. During 1934 only three gas wells were drilled in Wyoming and 29 dry holes, 13 in proven fields and 16 at wildcat locations. Of the latter, 5 were on wildcat structures of considerable interest. Of the 55 wells completed during the year, 53 were in proven fields and of these 17 were small ones in the shallow Osage field and 10 were light-oil wells good for 1500 to 3000 bbl. each in the Lance Creek field. Discoveries Two of the oil wells were discoveries at Medicine Bow and Sheep Creek. Medicine Bow is a very large anticline with more than 3500 ft. of closure and is located in Carbon County in the south-central part of the state. In 1923 it showed some oil in the Upper Cretaceous Frontier

DISCUSSION, H. L. Burghoff presiding C. S. Smith (University of Chicago, Chicago)—The author is to be congratulated on his valuable contribution to the extremely meager absolute data on interface energies in metallic systems. It is interesting to note that the ratio between a and r iron boundary energies is approximately the same in the quaternary alloy with silicon, carbon, and sulphur as in the binary Cu-Fe alloy. A value for the copper grain boundary energy can be obtained from the author's data, Tables IV and VI, by utilizing the energy ratios of the following pairs of interfaces: copper-sulphide/copper, copper y iron, y iron/y iron, y iron/ copper, and copper/copper. This gives a value of 595 erg per sq cm for the free energy of the copper grain boundary. Despite this circuitous route and the assumption that the y iron boundary is identical in alloys with and without sulphur and does not change between 1105" and 100O°C, this figure is in remarkably close agreement with other values of the copper boundary energy, obtained by equilibration against lead and against the free copper surface. It therefore appears either that impurities do not greatly affect the grain boundary energies or that boundaries in even nominally pure metals are already sufficiently contaminated so that further change has little effect.

The German experience in dealing with the health hazard of respirable dust in underground mines is reported from first-hand observation in this Bureau of Mines paper. The report covers-- 1. The control of dust by water infusion, water spraying, and ventilation. 2. The sampling devices (tyndalloscope , konimeter , and BAT-I) and methods used to determine the dust concentrations in mines. 3. The systems of classifying hazardous and safe dust levels in mines. 4. The research facilities devoted to theoretical and applied work on mine dust and pneumoconiotic disease. Tile major research projects on dust and disease now underway in West Germany are outlined in an appendix.

The appearance of the Cornish miner in South Australia was, in the simplest terms, the result of resource development economics. In Cornwall in the middle of the 19th century tin and copper mining was declining, while in the new colony of South Australia copper mining was booming. Experienced hard rock miners in Cornwall there- fore escaped unemployment at home by accepting an assisted passage to South Australia. There, in a colony where they were needed, they made their skills available and received good wages. There are many testimonies which support this simple thesis. Take for example the following extracts from contemporary newspapers in Corn- wall: Persons of small capital will find this an excellent opportunity for emigrating to the young and thriving colony ... The miner will find a rich and unbroken field for his operations. The Colony abounds with minerals... (West Briton, 19 July 1844) Miners make a great deal of money here (South Australia). All of them earn ú2 to ú3 per week and in many cases when they have a portion of the mine on tribute one person has cleared ú100 in a couple of months or so. (Cornwall Royal Gazette, 21 July 1848)

"Chrysotile asbestos can be dyed with certain dyestuffs to form stable coloured products whose hemolytic and cytotoxicity are greatly reduced. Examples of these dyes are Thiazol Yellow G (a monazo dye) and Trypan Blue (a diazo dye). Other dye stuffs, for example, basic dyes with triphenyl methane structure, Brilliant Yellow (a diazo dye), and Methylene Blue (a thiazine dye) colour asbestos but do not reduce its toxicity. Similarly alizarin, 8-hydroxyquinoline, and representative members of the phthalein group Bromocresol Purple and Phenolphthalein.IntroductionThere is, at present, a controversy regarding the dangers of asbestos fibres, and attempts are being made to render it less toxic. One of these attempts consisted of treating chrysotile asbestos with gaseous phosphorus oxychloride, POCI], at ambient temperature and in absence of moisture. The product had to be heated at 300°C to 500°C to expel exess entrained reagent to get a material containing 0.5070 to 5% phosphate groups and known as Chrysophosphate (Lalancette and Dunnigan, 1982). This product showed decreased toxicity as measured by its hemolytic effect on red blood cells (fable 1). In another approach, Flowers (1983) showed that when chrysotile asbestos was thoroughly mixed with a solution of ferric ammonium sulphate and the slurry was then filtered and dried, the product showed a marked decrease in cytotoxicity.In the present investigation the problem of toxicity was considered from a different point-of-view. Chrysotile asbestos is a hydrated magnesium silicate that can be represented by the structural model shown in Figure 1 from which it can be seen that magnesium hydroxide groups, Mg(OH)2, form a part of the silicate structure. Certain organic reagents that are known to react with magnesium ion in solution to form chelates were reacted with asbestos to find out whether a chelate was also formed on the fibres, and if so , what will be the hemolytic action and cytotoxicity of the product."

The formation of grain boundary precipitates has been studied in Ag-5.64 wt pcl Al alloys at 688°C. Large-grain specinzerzs were used and the boundary misorientation measured by X-ray diffraction. At low-angle grain boundrrries Primary sideplates form. u)hile abore a 17-deg misorientation lenticular precipitates predominate. Growth of the lenticular precipitates was studied on individual grain boundaries using a statistical technique. The thickening and lengthening rates appeared to be independent of &apos;pain boundary misorientation, indicating that grain boundary diffusion was not significant in this system. The precipitates grew urith constant shape, with both the length and thickness increasing parabolically with time. The parabolic lengthening rates were unexpected since previous theory and experimerztal results had indicated linear growth. By approximating the shape of the precipitate to that of an oblate spheroid grouling with constant shape an equivalent diffusion coefficienl was calculated. The zlalue obtained was in good agreement with nleasurements obtained fron, diffusiorz couples. IF a single-phase alloy is heated or cooled to a temperature such that the phase becomes supersaturated, there is a tendency for a second phase to precipitate from it in order to remove the supersaturation. Precipitation takes place initially on grain boundaries due to preferred heterogeneous nucleation, but subsequently Widmans kitten plates may form in the grain interiors if the grain size and supersaturation are sufficient. The type of grain boundary precipitate formed depends on the nature of the boundary. Aaronson1 and clark2 have shown that grain boundary misorientation can be characterized by the simple parameter R, where and X, Y, and Z represent the minimum rotations about three orthogonal axes required to bring the two lattices forming the grain boundary into coincidence. The maximum value for R is 60 deg. In using this parameter the orientation of the grain boundary itself is, of course, neglected. However it was found in both Fe-si3 and A1-Ag2 that the precipitate shape depended only on the parameter R. Clark found that the vast majority of precipitates formed were allo-triomorphs— lens-shaped precipitates that grew along the grain boundaries. At low-angle boundaries, however, (R < 15 deg) Widmanstatten sideplates nucleated at the grain boundaries and grew into the adjacent grains. It has been reported that the rate of growth of grain boundary precipitates is controlled by diffusion within the supersaturated phase.&apos; The theories which have been developed for growth rates have assumed the diffusion coefficient constant over the composition range of the supersaturated phase. This is a fairly good approximation if the composition range involved is not large. A 10-year, sea-water, corrosion test of tubes of several copper alloys has shown that many alloys withstood attack by solution, pitting, and dezinkification; a 1-year, salt-spray test of sheet-metal specimens of the same composition showed the same results. THE late J. P. Sparrow, chief operating engineer of the New York Edison Co., carried out a series of practical tests on condenser tubes of several copper alloys and reported on the results to the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies at its meeting in&apos; September, 1913. In the preparation of these tubes the senior author had the pleasure of cooperating. Copper-zinc alloys in the proportions of 60-40, 70-30, 80-20, 90-10, and Admiralty metal, which is in effect 70-30 with 1 per cent. of tin, were tried. Monel metal and several copper-nickel alloys, and 8, 5, and 3 per cent. aluminum bronze were also tried. At the time of this report, the aluminum bronze had been in service for 4 1/2 years and seemed to be giving especially good results but later it began to fail and showed no substantial improvement over Admiralty metal. Monel metal was unsatisfactory and the nickel alloys apparently did not give better service than the Admiralty alloy. Previous to the publication of the report, and after considerable discussion, it was agreed that a test where tubes of different kinds could be under laboratory observation would be advisable, so the apparatus described here was set up in The American Brass Co.&apos;s Waterbury Laboratory. This was fitted with tubes of copper, brass, bronze, nickel silver, cupro-nickel and other alloys, and the test started Oct. 11, 1912. Salt water from East River, New York harbor, was barrelled and transported to the laboratory for the test. A fresh supply, completely replacing the water in service, was obtained at the end of each six months period.

"In 1993, trials of two innovative applications of liner support involving the replacement of bolts in the ground support system were undertaken at Inco mines. The first trial involved an evaluation of the effect of dynamic loading on mesh-reinforced boltless shotcrete in a sub-level cave mining area on 2400 level at Stobie Mine. The second trial involved an evaluation of the MIROC Mineguard spray-on liner as a replacement for bolts and screen support, or as a replacement for screen support alone, in a topsoil heading of a bulk, VRM (vertical retreat mining) stope on 3240 level at Lower Coleman Mine.In the Stobie Mine trial, an uppers retreat heading was supported using a two-pass system. First, shotcrete was applied 2 inches thick, followed by pinning of mesh screen to the back and walls. A second pass of another 2 inches of shotcrete was then performed. For recovery of the ore zone, a vertical slot was created using a Borepak blind boring machine. The uppers rings were blasted, one or two rings at a time, starting at the slot and retreating out of the heading. During blasting of the production rings, blast monitoring was used to record the ppvs (peak particle velocities). For a series of 5-ring blasts, the maximum ppvs were measured to be 0.4 m/s (16 in./s) with a maximum charge weight per delay of357 kg (800 Ib). Six 5-point convergence measurement stations were set up and after each blast the total rockmass convergence was measured using a tape extensometer. Although a maximum displacement of 100 mm (4 in.) was measured, the shotcrete still managed to provide some support junction. A support damage assessment was also done to try and relate blast vibration to effectiveness of the mesh reinforced shotcrete liner. This trial demonstrated the effect that blasting has, on a support system, and it also demonstrated the necessity of having the mesh reinforcement properly placed within the shotcrete."

In hard, discontinuous rocks, failure modes and stability are controlled to a great extent by the intersection of discontinuities with the excavated surface. We have solved the general problem of finding the shape and size of all blocks formed through the inter- section of any number of joints and excavation surfaces and will demonstrate a simple graphical method for determining which of these is the "keyblock." An example will explain this methodology applied to a simple open pit. The effects of slope curvature in plan or section, will be demonstrated. Finally, we will show how to determine the optimum orientations for the cut slopes. The methodology is based upon a powerful topologic theorem concerning the finiteness of spatial intersections. This paper is a companion to another dealing with underground openings in the Proceedings of the 22nd Symposium on Rock Mechanics (MIT) , July 1981. This paper discusses the rock blocks created by the intersection of discontinuities and excavation surfaces in a rock mass. It establishes principles and procedures by means of which those blocks that are finite and critically located can be identified and described. The main assumptions are the following: 1. The rock itself is assumed to be strong so that the only concern for stability is the movement of rock blocks them- selves.

FOREWORD THE problem of concentrating the disseminated lead ore of southeast Missouri is extremely simple. The economic mineral is galena and the gangue is dolomite. The ore assays from 4 to .6 per cent. lead, 80 per cent. of which is recovered in a 70 per cent. concentrate.. The ore is crushed through 10 mm. and sized on 2 mm.; the oversize is jigged, while the undersize is tabled, and the slime treated by flotation. The district is the largest lead producer in the world, the output of metallic lead for the year 1915 being 183,906 tons. Over 20,000 tons of ore a day is being treated. The management of the different properties is progressive and always open to suggestion. The fact; however, must not be lost sight of, that the problem in the district is peculiar, as the average ore contains but 80 to 120 lb. of a metal normally selling at about 4c. per lb. The low price of the metal limits the treatment system to one of low cost. An elaborate treatment is neither logical nor advisable. An engineer first visiting the district may consider that the method of treatment could be improved

The heading of this paper was prompted by the knowledge that experience, up to this time, seemed to indicate that smaller furnaces were preferable for smelting the material of this section. Since the reasonable success thus far achieved by the first furnace of this plant tends to change the above opinion, and unsettle the generally-accepted views of furnace-men as to "weak " coke, a few words as to the design of the plant and the mode of operation adopted may prove interesting.

"The production of salable Rare Earth Element (REE) products necessitates a sequence of chemical separation steps between the mine and market commodities. The effectiveness of the chemical separations that purify REE salts is critical to the success of the producer, as the purity of REE salt products affects their market price. This is due to the fact that impurities in REE salts, even at low levels, can be deleterious to the function and usability of the end product. The purification of REE by removal of low levels of contaminant has been referred to as "product polishing". The technologies commonly in use for product polishing, solvent extraction (SX) and ion exchange (IEX) are challenged by the availability of separation chemistries to separate the contaminant from the desired REE salt. In simple terms, if a product specification is 99.9% purity, the SX or IEX separation reagents need to have at least a 999:1 selectivity ratio. Significant testing has been carried out on the use of solid phase extraction (SPE) columns to extract low-level impurities such as aluminum or zinc from REE product streams. The SPE columns are nano-composite materials that have rapid equilibration kinetics with the solutes being processed by the columns. The SPE matrices have been modified with chelating ion exchange ligands that bind the contaminating ion with great selectivity in residence times of a few seconds. Thus, REE streams with 1 to 2% of contaminating aluminum ions, have been polished to >99.99% purity. In this paper, results are presented on the removal of aluminum impurity from a didymium (neodymium+praseodymium) product stream using SPE technology. The selection of the SPE medium and the process steps to treat the feed solution for aluminum removal and ultimate stripping and recycle of the solid phase extractant are discussed."

The policy of buying crude oil on a gravity basis , recently instituted by the major crude oil purchasing agencies in the Mid- Continent field , has caused a new and vital interest to be taken in the work of the U. S. Bureau of Mines for preventing evaporation of crude . From the early years of the industry oil men have recognized that the gravity of crude oil is usually an index of the gasoline content , but it has not been so generally known that the gravity of the crude oil decreases if evaporation is permitted . In 1919 the Bureau of Mines began a survey to determine the evaporation losses of crude petroleum in its various stages of handling from the well to the refinery , The results of this study are presented in Bulletin 200 ( Wiggins , J.H. , Evaporation losses of petroleum in the Mid- Continent Field , Bulletin 200 , U. s . Bureau of Mines , ( In press ) The findings of this survey were so startling that soon after the preliminary report had been published , several tank companies began manufacturing vapor- tight tanks for the purpose of reducing these important losses . Since that time the development of this type of apparatus has been so rapid that today , every oil trade journal carries numerous advertisements of vapor- tight tanks and equipment as well as technical articles dealing with various problems in connection with the elimination of evaporation losses , whereas three or four years ago the subject was scarcely even thought of. The present report has been prepared in response to numerous requests for information on the apparatus actually being used to prevent evaporation losses . At this time oil operators are also extremely interested in holding the lighter fractions in the crude oil in order to prevent a lowering in gravity . The practice of removing the vapors from crude- oil tanks by means of a slight vacuum and extracting the gasoline from them is not discussed here .
