In 1984 and 1985, as part of its critical and strategic minerals studies, the Bureau of Mines investigated lode and placer tin occurrences near Rocky Mountain (Lime Peak), in east-central Alaska. The lode occurrences consist of mineralogically complex, generally fault-controlled veins, and contain an average of approximately 0.05 pct Sn, as cassiterite. Beneficiation testing of two bulk samples of the vein material produced concentrates containing 65 and 59 pct of the total tin values at grades of 0.35 and 13.9 pct, respectively. Although as much as 30 million short tons (MMst) of mineralized rock containing up to 20 MMlb Sn may be present, the grade of these occurrences is too low to be considered economic at this time. Trace amounts of cassiterite were also identified in surface samples of glacial out-wash gravels collected along North Fork Preacher Creek, which partially drains the area of tin lode deposits near Lime Peak. Low tin grades in the samples do not account for the former erosion of a large volume of lode tin mineralization from near Lime Peak; higher tin grades may be present in gravels closer to bedrock.

Analytical procedures are described for optimizing the selection of a rheological model when it is desired to express the functional relationship between true shearrate and shearing stress in analytical form. The procedures are extended to two principal model categories — "Generalized Newtonian" and "Viscoplastic" models. Graphical examples are presented to illustrate the utility of certain characteristic deriuative functions in distinguishing between these categories and in determining how well a particular model reflects the flow behavior of rheologically anomalous materials in simple shearing flows. INTRODUCTION Modern drilling fluids and fracturing fluids, being chemically complex, are frequently non-Newtonian — a peculiarity which complicates the solution of problems such as designing flowline and process equipment, and predicting laminar-turbulent behavior, solid-suspending ability and cutting-transport efficiency. Therefore, techniques of data analysis which accurately characterize the behavior of rheologically complex materials are needed for the accurate formulation of solutions of these and similar problems. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the application of a sensitive method of rheological data analysis — the dual differentiation-integration method of optimizing the selection of the functional relation between shear rate and shearing stress — to a variety of materials of interest in drilling and production practices. BASIC CONCEPTS THE DIFFERENTIATION METHOD To a first approximation, the viscosity function for a non-Newtonian system can be expressed in a form analogous to Newton's law of viscosity by the following generalization2.3 between the stress On introducing the restrictions that the system is incompressible and the motion is rectilinear, then l = 0 and l3 = 0 ; and with the further restriction that the flow is slip-free, the viscosity (an invariant) is then determined solely by 12. With this approach one can set up a suite of integral equations relating observed kinematical and dynamical parameters for certain types of flow experiments involving simple shearing motion, e.g., flow in a cylindrical tube, flow between rotating concentric cylinders, and flow between fixed parallel surfaces of large aspect ratio. Valuable data for geotechnical interpretation and integration into effective Australian underground mine planning may often be available, yet is not always fully appreciated or utilised, particularly in the early stages of mine planning or in due diligence studies. There may be considerable benefits associated with early prioritisation of geotechnical evaluation and impact on mine planning. Unidentified, misinterpreted, or ill-defined adverse geological and related geotechnical resource characteristics can pose significant business risk to underground coal projects and operations. Preliminary resource definition in the early conceptual mine planning stages attributes significant focus (entirely warranted) on resource quality and structural geology constraints. Yet detailed geotechnical data analysis and interpretation, which may have a substantial down stream impact and sensitivity with respect to future mine planning strategies, at times is given lower priority, or scoped and resourced in the later stages of a bankable feasibility study. Through extensive mine planning experience and observation of downstream process impacts, it has been found there is often data available for geotechnical analysis that does not readily stand out or is not adequately understood or utilised, available at the early (conceptual) stages of mine planning. Part of the issue may be that exploration geologists are not necessarily experienced geotechnical engineers and do not necessarily recognise or understand all important parameters. Subject to appropriate application of experienced professionals data can be manipulated to provide key geotechnical hazard assessment at minimal cost, and provide a framework for understanding and optimising the mine planning process. Although there is no single prescribed strategy for resource evaluation from a geotechnical perspective, potential business risks and mitigation approaches can and should be adopted at the conceptual mine planning stage. There has been a recent focus in the metals industry to provide a reporting framework for geotechnical classification of mining projects. This paper outlines the strategies and gives examples of key analyses adopted in mine planning and discusses the relative merits of adopting a reporting framework as a tool for geotechnical classification in mine planning.

Efetuou-se a análise superficial via microscopia confocal. Posteriormente ao preparo da superfície, as propriedades ópticas foram obtidas através da medida dos parâmetros elipsométricos tan(?), cos(?) e por conseguinte a obtenção preliminar do índice de refração e do coeficiente de extinção.

Column flotation is receiving increased interest from both an industrial and research perspective in Australia. The traditional overseas application as a molybdenum cleaning cell is being expanded and a number of new applications as cleaners, scavengers and roughers are emerging in Australia. The success of column flotation has hinged on the new understanding developing from the work of Finch- and coworkers at McGill University, Canada, particularly in relation to scale-up parameters and model development. The aspiring column flotation user in Australia now a has wealth of experience to draw on when deciding on the correct procedure to follow during the process evaluation and plant installation stages of development. However, some aspects relating to column design, such as aeration mechanisms, require careful evaluation.

A paper by Rose1 has called attention to some of the problems of wetting-liquid relative permeability measurement. The premises and conclusions set forth by Rose, namely the applicability of the Hassler scheme of measurement, will be accepted. In addition, it will be concluded that certain electrical analog circuits can be used as a pattern for consideration of possible hydraulic systems of measurements. NEW SCHEME OF MEASUREMENT The object of this note is to propose a new scheme of wetting liquid relative permeability measurement. It is significantly different from those heretofore described, nonetheless it is based on Hassler concepts. The scheme is illustrated in Fig. 1 in terms of the corresponding electric circuit analog. It may be designated descriptively as the "comparison" method of wetting-liquid relative permeability measurement. The base of the biozone of Olenellus is accepted as the most universally applicable criterion for defining the base of the Cambrian System. The use of this definitive criterion is restricted by important practical considerations. In the southeastern Canadian Cordillera this zone appears to truncate the basal ortho-quartzite of a west to east marine -transgression. This transgression began in Interior British Columbia in the Late Proterozoic and terminated in the region of the present Rockies in the Late Waucobian. Most of the material deposited by the transgressing sea originated in the eastern positive element 'Laurentia' and was transported over the intervening low Proterozoic-Windermere erosion surface. The configuration of the advancing shoreline and the distribution of the sediments were controlled by the tectonic activity of positive elements in northwestern Montana (Montania) and in the Fairmont Hot Springs-Radium area of British Columbia.

J. Laskowski (Associate Professor, Dept, of Mineral Processing and Coal Preparation, Silesian University of Technology, Gliwice, Poland) -Referring to the papers by J. A. L. Campbell and S. C. Sun, I must say that I am very pleased to see that type of work, because it is the only way to progress towards an understanding of flotation mechanisms. All those interested in the science of the surface chemistry of coals would find these papers a valuable contribution to the literature. In their extensive research, the authors attempt to synthesize their findings into a theory of coal flotation. To do this, the zeta potential of bituminous coals and their lithotypes, as well as that of an anthracite coal, was measured and H+ and OH- ions were found to be potential determining ions. The measured ZPC of bituminous coals was at a pH range from 3.5 to 4.6 and for the anthracites between 2.0 and 4.5. The authors have pointed out that since the hydrophobicity is pH-controlled, the flotation mechanism should also be. The Campbell and Sun papers confirm a good many of the conclusions on surface properties of coals reported in recent years. It is noteworthy to point out that the ZPC found in the paper on bituminous coals was approximately pH 4, similar to the ZPC for the anthracite coal. In fact, we have been investigating different coals from low to high ranks. Thus, the plot of the pH for ZPC against rank could be derived and this curve-an electrocapillary one-indicates a pH near which the hydrophobicity of the coal surface should be at maximum. This can be proved by so-called salt flotation, which, in a sense, can be treated as method of surface charge measurement. It is obvious that the salt flotation experiment is possible when the native hydrophobicity of the mineral surface is high, e.g., when the solid surface does not have an orienting influence on an adjacent water layer and the hydration layers are controlled by the electrical double-layer potential. The addition of electrolyte or a change of pH which decreases the thickness of the stabilizing double-layer "opens up" the hydrophobic surface micro-area mosaic. Thereby the surface becomes hydrophobic and particles become floatable. The orienting influence of surface on hydration layer increases even after very slight oxidation and flotation is affected by it. It seems that such an explanation agrees reasonably well with those of Campbell and Sun.

1. The investigation shows that the Pewee, Big Mary, and Windrock are the most important beds in Anderson County. About 73 percent of the known recoverable reserves of coal in the county are in these beds, and from them comes 94 percent of the production. The remaining reserves tabulated in this report are in the Joyner, Jellico, Coal Creek, and Poplar Creek beds, and 6 percent of the county production comes from these beds. No production is being reported at present from the Jellico bed, although it was mined years ago. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, bared on a minimum thickness of 1/4 inches and on 1,800 short tons put acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 170 million torts as of January 1, 1953 Of this total, 155 million tons is in beds 2S inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to they total estimated reserves.

The mining industry of the United States has-long been severely criticized because of its high rate of accident occurrence, net only as compared with other major industries-in the United States but also with the mining industries of other countries particularly Europe. Statistics (often not of strictly comparable nature) indicate that the accident-frequency rate in all mining is currently about three times and the accident-severity rate is about seven times as great as the average for general industrial work in the United States. These figures are by no means comforting to humanitarian mining men, irrespective of their status in. the industry, and they constitute a challenge that certainly cannot continue to be ignored much longer. This picture becomes much darker when the above statistics are augmented with data indicating that. on an exposure basis our mines (more particularly our coal mines) have accident rates two, three, or even more times as great as more or less similar types of mines in Europe, particularly England and Wales, Belgium, France, and Germany. However, these foreign accident statistics should be carefully analyzed before we become very mush concerned about them, because they are clot strictly comparable owing to several considerations, not the least of which is the fact that foreign methods of compiling or recording accident statistics often differ materially from ours. Moreover, foreign mining and other conditions axe definitely dissimilar to ours in many if not most phases, and numerous ether factors affect the comparability of foreign mine-accident statistics with ours. Unquestionably it should also be taken into consideration that the accident rate of the 130,000,000 or more constituting the populace of the United. States as a whole is much higher than that of any other major country in the world and is two, throe, or more times the rate of the European countries that have more favorable mine-accident rates than those of the United States. Moreover, it is significant that the mine-accident-severity- rate of British mines is about six times the average accident-severity rate of the major industries of the British Isles, or but little mere, favorable than the comparable figures in the United States, namely, that mining-has an accident-severity rate about seven times that of the average of about 30 of the major industries of this country.

The Arkansas Novaculite of Devonian and Mississippian age is the most distinctive formation in the central Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas from the standpoint of both topography and lithology. The formation typically forms precipitous, narrow ridges (hogbacks) which reflect the steepness of dip and the resistance and thickness of the rock units. The Arkansas Novaculite varies from less than 200 feet thick in the north to locally over 800 feet thick in the south and outcrops over an east-west distance of 360 km (200 miles) in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Most of the rocks of the formation are highly siliceous with novaculite predominating, and lesser quantities of chert, siliceous shale, conglomerate and rarely sandstone. Novaculite is commonly defined as a homogeneous mostly white rock, translucent on thin edges with a dull to waxy luster and composed almost entirely of microcrystalline quartz. The word novaculite comes from the Latin word novacula, meaning razor hone. This term was first used by Richard Kirwan in his mineralogy text of 1784. The origin of novaculite remains controversial but we believe it was a primary silica derived mostly from the alteration of submarine volcanic-rich materials, with numerous fine biogenic components and some minor clastics (derived mostly from foreland facies via turbidity currents) and deposited as an amorphous siliceous ooze in the deep Ouachita trough. It was subsequently converted to microcrystalline quartz during diagenesis by the compaction of the overlying rocks and the intense Late Paleozoic Ouachita Mountain tectonism. In the central and southern portions of the region three divisions of the formation have been defined: a Lower Division predominantly of light-colored novaculite; a Middle Division of interbedded dark chert and shale; and an Upper Division of massive often calcareous novaculite. In the northern exposures the formation is thinner and contains more black chert and shale, chert-shale conglom¬erate, sandstone and less novaculite. The massive novaculite of the Upper and Lower Divisions is a source of high purity silica (99+%). Indians were the first to use novaculite. They made their various tools and hunting implements from the weathered broken rock until they learned the quarrying techniques. The first white men in the area recognized the use of novaculite for sharpening their tools and knives: previously whetstones were obtained in small quantities from Europe. To this day whetstone is quarried mostly in areas which the Indians and possibly the Spanish previously worked. Some of the current mining practices have changed very little from those of the early quarryman. In areas where the novaculite of the Upper Division is poorly cemented, this friable tripolitic material has found applications in such uses as an abrasive, as a filler or extender in paints, plastics and other purposes. Some of the dense novaculite is suitable as a filler in fire bricks and also in plastics. Because some of it has the tendency to decrepitate when heated not all novaculite can be used for these applications. Several quarry operators are crushing novaculite for road, concrete, and other aggregate. This use was formerly rather limited due to the abrasiveness of the novaculite on crushing and screening equipment. Further potential uses of novaculite are speculative but include application of high purity silica in the production of silicon metal for solar cells, seed or "growing", and fusing quartz for electronics.

Soldering material widely used is Sn-Pb alloy, which have low melting point and excellent electrical, strength properties and wettability. However, Pb is one of the toxic elements, which is undesirable due to environmental and safety reasons, thus Pb-free alternative alloy is preferred for new soldering materiaL Sn-Ag and Sn-Zn based alloys have been viewed as very promising candidates, among many potential substitutes. Addition of third element to these alloys will decrease melting point of the alloys. Hence, Sn-Ag-In and Sn-Zn-Mg alloys are expected to be suitable for replacing Sn-Pb solder alloy. In order to dcsign new Pb-free soldering materials, it is crucial to understand precise thermodynamic properties and phase diagrams of alloy systems. In the present work, ion current ratios of Ag to In and Mg to Zn were measured for Sn-Ag-In and Sn-Zn-Mg alloys by mass spectrometry, respectively. Also, the authors reviewed the thermodynamic properties of terminal binary alloys determined by other researchers and evaluated a thermodynamic functions to express the excess Gibbs free energy of each binary alloy. Thermodynamic functions to express the excess Gibbs free energy of liquid Sn-Ag-In and Sn-Zn-Mg ternary alloys were determined, utilizing the assessed Gibbs free energy of terminal binary alloys with the measured ion current ratios using mass speetrometer.

"Once a health based guidance limits for exposure to diesel exhaust have been established, and as part of a multi-disciplinary team, the program for exposure reduction should incorporate the plan-do-check-adjust cycle. Setting a suitably protective (health based) occupational exposure limit (OEL) for diesel particulate matter (DPM) and nitrogen dioxide is a key driver to reduce exposure. It is important to go beyond regulations and reduce exposure to diesel exhaust, DPM, as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) such as that prescribed under the Australia, Queensland Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Regulation 2017 where under section 135 Limiting workers exposure, the workers exposure must not exceed the exposure limit applying to the worker for the hazard; and is ALARA. It appears that previously acceptable OELs are no longer safe. Therefore it is important that the internal responsibility system be implemented and the precautionary principle approach be followed, especially as it may be some time before a suitably protective OEL specifically for DPM is in place. One leading multi-national mining company BHP Billiton has acknowledged a significant lag that exists between regulatory action and the level of science that informs health risk. This company is managing exposure to diesel exhaust to as low as technically feasible. This same company that has set an interim target for managing diesel exhaust to 0.03 mg/m3 is achieving these levels which paves the way for other mining companies and general industry including construction. The Occupational Cancer Research Centre 2017 recommends reducing personal exposure to within 0.02 mg/m3 (EC) for underground mining and 0.005 mg/m3 for other workplaces. Controlling DPM is important to prevent cancer however it is also important that that nitrogen dioxide (NO2) be reduced (ALARA) and that careful selection of control technology be considered such as the proper selection of a diesel oxidation catalyst so that the level of NO2 does not in fact increase. The example from BHP Billiton provides a leading practice including using a multi-disciplinary approach and the importance of controlling emission at source and having an auditable diesel emissions based monitoring program in place."

"The Cordilleran region of western Canada includes most of British Columbia and the Yukon and pares of Alberta and the Northwest Territories. The western part of this region was for about 50 years the principal mineral producing area of the Dominion. It lost this distinction in 1907 when production from the mines of the Canadian Shield took the lead, but it continues to provide about 15 percent of the total Canadian production. In 1945 the total mineral production of British Columbia and the Yukon was valued at $65,302,900, of which about 80 percent was derived from metals.This paper is intended to serve as an introduction co the more derailed Cordilleran papers. Part I includes a brief synopsis of the complex geology and diverse types of mineralization in the region and Parr II collates the main structural principles exemplified in the derailed papers, and draws some conclusions regarding the application of this information to prospecting."

GENERAL DESCRIPTION History The most striking feature of mining in the United States has been the infrequent use of longwall systems. This system, which accounts for the majority of coal production in Europe, Japan, and other countries, is only recently growing out of its infancy in the mining of normal coal seams and is still untried in the mining of thick coal seams in the US. Its use in the mining of metal and nonmetal ore bodies has been virtually ig¬nored, except for isolated instances in trona, copper, and uranium. Longwall mining is believed to have originated in Shropshire, England, towards the end of the 17th cen¬tury (Laird, 1973). Although the method used would be considered primitive by today's standards, many of the basic concepts have remained unchanged. Longwall mining of coal in the US was first introduced before the turn of the century, but it never gained acceptance as it did in Europe. Historically, longwalling was a cyclic method where a single cut of coal was removed from the face on the producing shift each day, and the work of building stone packs in the gob and manually moving roof support was completed on the off shifts. Due to the amount of dead work, productivity was extremely low. In Europe, however, longwall methods were required despite the high costs involved, because only by this method could coal under heavy depth be mined with any reasonable degree of recovery. Reserves of coal lying under shallow cover, and therefore minable by room¬and-pillar methods, were long ago inadequate to supply most of Europe's coal requirements. In the US coal min¬ing has historically proceeded laterally with the new mines in virgin areas to replace old mines; in Great Britain, Germany, Japan, and many other countries, mining must proceed downward to greater depths. The depth of cover for most coal operations in the US is shallow, i.e., 61 to 305 m (200 to 1000 ft). This, combined with large reserves, has made room-and-pillar methods almost universally applicable. However, longwall systems were tried around the turn of the century. Whenever used, it was frequently noted that the opera¬tion was under the direction of men with foreign ex¬perience and was tried under ideal conditions. Some of the mines that were using longwall or had tried longwall prior to 1910 were the Radiant mine, CO; Vinton Coal Co., PA; Cambria Steel Co., Johnstown, PA; Grundy County and Spring Valley, IL; and unnamed mines in Washington, West Virginia, Kentucky, Iowa, and Kansas. As late as 1961, there was one circular longwall in operation at Centerville, IA. The first modern-day op¬eration to take advantage of European technology and longwall methods was Kaiser Steel Corp. at its Sunnyside mine near Price, UT. Due to deep cover and extremely poor roof conditions, combined with a need for in¬creased production, Kaiser management decided a new method was required and turned to longwall in 1961. The first longwall consisted of an Anderson Mavor shearer loader, British Jeffrey-Diamond conveying equip¬ment, and Dowty roof supports with a capacity made up of two and three 27-t (30-st) capacity props. After nor¬mal start-up problems, this unit averaged over 454 t (500 st) per shift (White and Palacios, 1976). During and after World War II, technology in hy¬draulics and controls had advanced to the point that self-advancing supports and hydraulic props were being developed. In 1960 only I % of West German produc¬tion was from mechanized longwall faces. This in¬creased to 37% in 1970 and 63% in 1973 (Kohlgruber, 1974). In 1976 there were 246 coal mines operating in the United Kingdom. Although this is only 50% of those operating ten years ago, the production has increased 42%, mainly through improvements in longwall equipment and methods (Hunter, 1976). In France and other European countries, the devel¬opment of longwall mechanization has been similar in seams up to 2.44 m (8 ft) thick. In seams that exceed 9.14 m (30 ft), a variety of longwall caving has been developed for coal seams with dips of 0 to 1.6 rad (0 to 90°). Those with the greatest success will be discussed later. As noted, the development of longwall mining to its present state of the art has mainly taken place since World War II with substantial gains in the last ten years. Mechanized longwall has been the result of several re¬lated major innovations (Jackson, 1975) 1) Development of the flexible armored face con¬veyor which can be installed along the face and moved forward without disassembly. 2) Development of face machines such as single and double drum shearer and coal plows which operate in conjunction with the armored conveyors. 3) Development of self-advancing hydraulic roof supports which now include chocks, chock shields, and shields. 4) Reliance of caving of the immediate roof based on proper planning and development. 5) Use of pneumatic slowing to enable extraction below overbuilt areas. The most recent developments in the mining of coal by longwall in the US include the introduction of shield supports at Kaiser's York Canyon mine in New Mexico, single-entry longwall development at Kaiser's Sunnyside mine, and Mid-Continent's advancing longwall system in Colorado. Metal and nonmetal longwall systems in the US have included the mining of copper at White Pine, MI; uranium in Utah and New Mexico, and trona in Wyoming.

It has been observed in several Jameson cell installations where the source for flotation feed is deslime screens, that the recovery of coal particles greater than 0.5 m is not as great as that of finer material. Consequently, a research project was undertaken at a CHPP in the Bowen Basin, Queensland, to assess the possibility of increasing the recovery of coarser particles (+0.5 mm) within the downcomer of the Jameson Cell. The effect of decreasing turbulence and agitation in a commercial-scale downcomer was investigated to assess the effect on the recovery of both coarse and fine coal particles. This paper details the findings of the testwork, summarising the results relating to differences in the operating parameters within the downcomer.

The alkaline oxidation of refractory gold concentrates containing arsenopyrite and pyrite at ambient temperatures and pressures has been found to be accompanied by the simultaneous dissolution of gold without the addition of cyanide. A detailed study has been made of the kinetics of the oxidation of the pure minerals and of several concentrates. The reaction products of the oxidation of arsenic and sulphur have been monitored using chromatographic techniques. In the case of arsenopyrite, thiosulfate, monothioarsenate, arsenate and sulfite are the principal products while thiosulfate has been confirmed to be the dominant product of pyrite oxidation. Gold, either as added powder or as a constituent of the concentrates has been found to dissolve simultaneously during the alkaline oxidation of both arsenopyrite and pyrite, and this appears to be associated with the in-situ formation of thiosulfate as a lixiviant. The effects of temperature, stirring speed, oxygen partial pressure, alkalinity and pulp density on the oxidation of arsenopyrite and the dissolution of gold have also been investigated.
