THIS paper relates entirely to the casting of brass under fluid pressure in steel dies. Die castings of metals and alloys of low melting point have been available for many years but the development of brass die castings has been relatively recent, occurring within the past five years. The successful development of brass die castings has resulted from the availability of alloy steels that would give satisfactory life as dies and the development of suitable die-casting machines. The melting point of copper is 1084° C. (1983° F.) and of a high brass about 900° C. (1652° F.), as compared to 327.5° C. (621.5° F.) for lead, 419.4° C. (786.7° F.) for zinc and 658.7° C. (1217.7° F.) for aluminum, temperatures that are indicative of the casting temperatures required for the various types of alloys, of which the melting points are somewhat lower than those of the pure metals.

The South Comet mine is an underground silver-lead-zinc mine located on the West Coast of Tasmania with an annual production in the order of 35 000 tonne per year. All ore mined is shipped to the Rosebery mill by road, a distance of 17 km.

Particle shape characterization is a complex task made more difficult because of the human eye's sophisticated recognition of shapes, giving rise to the assumption that shape analysis is considered a simple problem. Further exacerbating the problem is the question of whether particles have a general shape. Old and new shape measuring techniques are discussed, particularly the new image analysis methods techniques such as Fourier, Haar, Walsh and Delta. Problems with the current image analysis equipment and future research equipment needs are presented.

An experimental investigation of the thermal and mechanical responses of rock materials to laser radiation is described. Specifically, the following three topics have been studied in detail: 1. Temperature measurements on thin discs subjected to laser radiation. 2. Strain measurements on thin discs subjected to laser radiation. 3. Observation and evaluation of cracking and spalling phenomena in constrained and unconstrained thin discs respectively, subjected to laser radiation. In conjunction with the experimental work done, use was made of a heat flow analysis and a stress analysis program developed for this purpose. It was possible to theoretically predict the thermal and mechanical responses of a rock specimen to laser radiation and then compare them with experimental observations. Good correlations were obtained.

The world?s ever-expanding demand for energy and coking coals has resulted in the underground mining industry looking at taking on increasingly marginal and geotechnically challenging deposits. The drivers for this change include a reduced availability of open cut reserves and a lack of remaining ?good coal leases?. The lack of plum deposits is forcing some companies wanting to enter the coal supply market to purchase and operate in higher risk, lower margin areas. As geotechnical professionals, we are expected to develop strategies to facilitate safe and productive mining in ground that once would have been avoided. To be successful in these reserves, we are required to use every tool available, from exploration data to longwall automation, and invent or reinvent some new tools along the way. This paper presents geotechnical case studies of challenges in longwall mining and some of the methods developed and used to allow longwall mining to succeed where others said we would fail.

An exhaustive program of geologic studies and mapping has been conducted by the Geological Survey in the Iron River district of Michigan since May 1943. Means of contributing to the success of these studies were sought by the Bureau of Mines, and eventually a program involving geophysical studies and core-drilling was undertaken in the area. All of the work was done either to develop data that would contribute directly to geologic studies or to investigate geophysical methods that might be used as a primary means for the discovery of minable iron ore.

The investment worth of a mineral deposit can only be realistically evaluated in relation to specified engineering design criteria which fully detail the proposed method of exploitation. The operational design of a mine falls essentially within the technical discipline of the mining engineer, under the constraint that the technical design should be aimed at optimizing the financial attractiveness of the project. In the case of a marginally viable proposition it becomes vitally necessary to identify the best set of design parameters which together will add up to an optimum investment proposal. This paper examines some fundamental logic of optimization for a "wasting asset" type of investment such as a mine, with special reference to the rate of annual production and the strategy of selective mining.

The Grasberg copper-gold deposit was discovered in Spring 1988, just one year prior to the planned closure of Freeport Indonesia's original Ertsberg open pit copper mine. In spite of Grasberg's remote location, 600m above the Ertsberg, atop a hitherto inaccessible mountain, Freeport-McMoRan brought their latest open pit mine into production in the last week of 1989, less than two years after discovery. This paper describes the start-up of the operation, highlighting synergies drawn from both the original Ertsberg experiences and the current Freeport Indonesia underground mines.

The recent development of galvanic cell-type hydrogen sensor for molten copper was outlined. The principle of the sensing mechanism, the fundamental structure of the sensor, and its performance as a process control device are discussed based on experimental work undertaken by the authors. Besides sensors based on usual perovskite-type proton conducting oxide, those using magnesium-doped alpha alumina, which was recently known as a proton conductor, were investigated and the results at the laboratory scale are reported. Considering the excellent sensitivity at high temperature and the stability to the disturbance from the attendant oxygen activity, magnesium-doped alpha alumina was regarded to be a superior material for the sensors used for such purposes.

[The objective of this project wan to determine the technical feasibility of recovering the associated copper, lead, and zinc from the pyrrhotite axe, of the Great Gossan lead, which has bon pined only for it:, sulfur and iron contents so far. The report constituted a description and discussion of small-scale Preliminary studies. This great pyrrhotite or body has strategic value, inasmuch it contains considerable quantities of zinc, copper, and lead, as well as the iron rend sulfur. The recovery of the: copper, lead, and zinc, associated with certain of the pyrrhotite ore bodies, could augment our domestic supply of these metals.]

Selective open pit mining for gold has been in progress at Harbour Lights since the onset of mining in March 1985. Selective mining techniques used are similar to those in other recently opened gold mines in Western Australia. However certain practices have been introduced to accommodate the irregular distribution of mineralisation and comparatively high mill tonnage throughput. These include selective mining with large bucket excavators, sequential waste stripping - ore mining normal to the strike of the orebody and sample line preparation and ripping on bench floors. Application of these selective mining practices at Harbour Lights enables the operation to maintain delivery of approximately forty by 50-tonne truck loads of ore to the mill crusher everyday, with limited rehandling of material through ore stockpiles.

The purpose of the work described in this publication was to determine, on a pilot-plant scale, the practicability of concentrating low-grade bauxite deposits to render them suitable for the extraction of alumina. In 1941, when it became apparent that the United States might soon be drawn into war, the government, through its various agencies and bureaus, began to stimulate and increase production from domestic reserves of bauxite, which is the principal raw material for the production of aluminum. This activity, which was centered in Arkansas, where 95 percent of the domestic reserve is situated, reached peak production when enemy submarine warfare greatly hindered imports from foreign sources. During this period the average domestic production in Arkansas rose from approximately 300,000 long wet tons to something over 6,000,000 tons in 1943.

THE fact that coals of different ranks and even of the same rank differ greatly in their amenability to froth flotation is well known. In recognition of the need for an explanation of this phenomenon, two hypotheses have been suggested. Wilkins1 reported that the floatability of coals increased with an increase of the carbon content or rank. This postulate is handicapped by the fact that bituminous coals that possess moderate carbon contents are actually more floatable than anthracite coals that have high carbon contents, as shown in columns 6 and 9 of Table I. Taggart and his associates' implied that the difference of floatability between bituminous and anthracite coal was caused by the variation of carbon-hydrogen ratio. This is not applicable to the relative floatability of other coals and carbons. For example, column 11 of Table I shows that the carbon-hydrogen ratios of low-floating lignitic coal and non-floating animal charcoal are not only smaller than the moderate-floating anthracite coal, but are also similar to the high-floating bituminous coal. Furthermore, according to this hypothesis, high temperature coke-A (464), Ceylon graphite (1238), and lamp-black (357), all possessing extremely high carbon-hydrogen ratios, should be less floatable than other substances having much lower carbon- hydrogen ratios such as high volatile-B bituminous coal (11.9 to 22), anthracite coal (35.7 to 60.5), lignitic coal (15.6 to 33.6), and charcoal (13 to 26.2). However the former group is actually more floatable than the latter group.

This report analyzes the byproducts systems of lead, zinc, uranium, rare earths, iron, aluminum, titanium, and lithium. Specific byproduct metals covered are cadmium, germanium, indium, and thallium from the zinc system; antimony and bismuth from the lead system; vanadium, radium, and scandium from the uranium system; rare-earth oxides from the rare-earth system; and cobalt, gallium hafnium, and rubidium from other systems. The report discusses various metallurgical systems, marginal and incremental production costs of byproduct subsystems, industry structure and organization, and historical data on price, consumption, and supply.

This past spring of 2006, BENCOR installed the concrete reinforced diaphragm walls for the COSMOPOLITAN RESORT & CASINO in Las Vegas, Nevada. The project highlights include the excavation of approx. 326.000 square feet of reinforced diaphragm slurry wall with a thickness of 30 inches and a depth of 100 feet using three reverse circulation trench cutters (hydromills) at the same time. The reinforcing steel cages were fabricated on the 8 acre jobsite and approximately 12,000 cubic yards of 4500 psi concrete was placed via tremie. The jobsite logistics of coordinating three trench cutters and three separate desanding/slurry plants as well as the reinforcing steel fabrication and concrete placement all under a very tight schedule was quite challenging. A second main exercise was the execution of a temporary excavation support. As the excavation depths extends between 66 and 72 feet, five to six rows of temporary tieback anchors were required. Anchor lengths range from 43 -83 feet at a maximum design load of 235 kips.

Attempt was taken in this study to explore the misplacement phenomena in binary mixture in solid-liquid fluidisation system. The binary mixtures of hematite and quartz particles at different sizes were taken. The closed size range particles were taken to minimize the size and shape effect in fluidization. As both the minerals have appreciable density difference, the separation of both minerals with closed size range has an advantage. The experiments were conducted in different permutation and combination of different sizes of binary mixture to observe the fluidization phenomena. The samples were taken at different heights in fluidized zones and analyzed the distribution of particles of both minerals. The fluidization characteristics were evaluated with respect to operating and design parameters. It has been observed that when the terminal velocity of quartz and hematite particles is same or near to each other, then misplacement is significant. In general, the segregation index value is near to one, complete segregation takes place whereas this value is near to zero, complete mixing takes place. The experimental data were used to find out the segregation index for different size ratios of quartz and hematite particles and the values are within 0-1. When the size ratio is 1 or less, complete segregation takes place whereas this ratio is within 1.0-1.4, partial mixing takes place. Similarly, when the size ratio is within 1.4-2.0, complete mixing takes place whereas this ratio is within 2.0-4.6, then it moves towards complete segregation in inversion manner. Citigold Corporation operates the Warrior gold mine at Charters Towers, northern Queensland, mining narrow quartz veins (0.1 to 2 m wide) in granodiorite by long hole open stoping on levels 15 m apart. Access is by decline and cross-cuts with on-ore development drives. The mineralisation comprises Palaeozoic mesothermal quartz veins containing gold, pyrite, sphalerite and galena, hosted by the Ordovician age Towers Hill Granite. The gold grain size is variable from 1 to 500 ¦m with 1 m face samples up to 800 ppm Au, and average run-of-mine grades of 10 to 14 ppm. Despite the spectacular gold tenor, little visible gold is present. Gold grades are highly variable presenting challenges in ore reserve estimation. Tonnages are discounted by 70 per cent to allow for the low payabilities (30 to 50 per cent) of the veins. Estimation techniques allow high confidence in overall global grade estimates but poor reliability on a local scale (25 m). Kriging ranges as low as 5 - 8 m means that obtaining a Proved Ore Reserve by diamond drilling is not economically feasible, and broad-scale mine planning decisions are made at the Inferred Mineral Resource stage and mine design work at the Probable Ore Reserve stage. Proved Ore Reserves can only be estimated after underground development has proceeded through the mineralised body with levels at 15 m vertical spacing sampled at 2 - 3 m intervals along the level. However, reconciliations between actual gold produced and earlier resource estimates produce workable results. A further three mines are scheduled to be developed underneath the city of Charters Towers.
