This report on the physical and chemical properties of crude oils of California is one of a series on the producing districts of the United States. It includes a short discussion of results, tabulated data, and individual analyses of California crudes. Analyses of crude oils from the fields of Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura Counties have been published in Serials 25952 and 26083. The analyses reported in this paper corer samples that were obtained subsequent to the publication of Serials 2535 and 2608. The samples were obtained by members of the San Francisco office of the Bureau of Mines. The collecting of samples was facilitated by the courtesy of representatives of oil companies in California.

In 1991, the first horizontal raise drill hole in Australia was successfully completed by Australian Raise Drilling Pty Ltd (ARD) at the Perseverance nickel mine of Western Mining Corporation's (WMC's) Leinster Nickel Operations in Western Australia. At that time, WMC were experiencing considerable difficulties in developing the horizontal drill drives through the orebody using conventional drill and blast techniques. Following the success of the initial hole, a further two holes were drilled as part of the evaluation program. The technique has proved so successful that it has been accepted by WMC for on-going development of drill drives at Perseverance.This paper describes the program. It relates how the project evolved, the modifications that were required to the equipment used, the performance experienced during the program and the future of the method in this and other applications.

The introduction of rubber tyred diesel equipment underground in the early 1960's and subsequent design improvements to diesel haulage systems over the past 2 decades has meant that diesel truck haulage has often been the first choice when selecting a haulage system for a new underground mine. Even today only 9% of all vehicles underground are electric powered.However, with the development of more efficient electric haulage systems, the suc-cessful installation of low cost shaft hoisting systems and improvements in conveyor design, alternative haulage systems are appearing as viable alternatives to diesel truck hauling. In particular, the aspects of ergonomic and environmental operating conditions, maintenance and operating costs as well as productivity rates are becoming more and more important in the selection of underground haulage systems. Future develop-ment of existing diesel haulage systems will require that diesel haulage units become more productive, have considerably reduced exhaust emissions compared to existing units and remain the cheapest haulage method for under-ground one way haul distances up to a distance of 3 kilometres. The formation of annealing textures in high-purity silver, from the various rolling textures obtanled in the course of texture transition, was studied. It was found that from a brass-type rolling texture the recrystallization texture is mainly (120) [211] type, which is quite different from the recrystallization texture of brass. From a predominantly copper-type rolling texture, the reclystallization texture is mainly (100) [001]. The recrystallization texture of silver- varies also with the degree of purity. In each case, however, the reorientation can be expressed as [Ill] rotations of 30° to 40°, which is consistent with the oriented growth theory of the formation of annealing textures. ThE recrystallization textures of rolled silver were studied long ago by Glocker and co-workers (1924-27) and were reported to be (113) [iil] upon annealing at low temperatures.1 Since that time, no further study of the recrystallization textures of silver, particularly with the modern techniques of quantitative texture determinations, has been reported in the literature. In a previous study2y3 it was found that the rolling texture of high-purity silver (99.999 +pct pure) is changed gradually from the common silver- or brass-type to the copper-type by raising the temperature of rolling from 0" to 200°C. The formation of annealing textures from the various rolling textures in the same material is, therefore, of considerable interest. The present paper constitutes the results of such a study. A recently-developed model is used as a tool to optimise the design of blasts used to create final walls in large open pit mines. The use of this tool has allowed present blasting practice and proposed designs to be evaluated to predict the likely extent of rock damage behind the final wall. The evaluation of the damage is dependent on the predominant local geology. Modelling of damage using the software allows the potential zones of rock damage to be evaluated under the following criteria: I . the extent of new fractures formed in the intact rock mass; and 2. the distance to which dilation and extension of existing discontinuities and pre-existing fractures will likely occur. The computer model has been used to examine present blasting practice and to estimate the damage induced by final and intermediate rows of blastholes. The results of current practices are presented in a visual form that allows simple comparisons to be made for any proposed changes in design. To confirm the predictions of the modelling, physical measurements are being undertaken at selected mines to quantify damage behind blast patterns, and experimental programs are underway to measure near-field vibration, or shock, levels. The computer modelling software is being used to qualify and improve the design of final rock slopes in large surface mining excavations, and to provide site engineers with well-defined design criteria for consistency in design. The model is seen to be just one of many tools which are being used in large open cut mining operations to gain an improved understanding of blasting and blast control.

With an increase of mining depth, a series of mining-induced hazards such as rockburst, coal and gas outburst, roof collapse, and water burst are getting more serious and more frequent. The intrinsic mechanism responsible for the occurrence of mining-induced hazards is the damage and unstable failure of rockmass or coal seam. The most distinct difference between deep and shallow levels is the so-called three ‘high’ (H3) conditions, i.e. high geo-stress, high fluid pressure and high geo-temperature. Therefore, the response of rock or coal to the deep mining operation is a phenomenon involving thermal (T), hydraulic (H), and mechanical (M) processes. Most importantly, mining excavation may vary the rock stress condition greatly, which may be a key factor to trigger the mining-induced hazards such as rockburst. In this regard, it is of great significance to clarify the damage and failure mechanism of rock and coal under coupled THM conditions, in order to clarify the rock failure mechanism responsible for the occurrence of mining-induced hazards. Thereafter, the mining-induced hazards cannot be predicted with confidence by considering each process independently. Of course, the requirement to include coupling of these processes depends on the specifics of the mining-induced hazards under consideration. For example, the water inrush is considered as a coupled hydro-mechanical (HM) process, in which the unstable failure of rockmass occurs under the combined contribution of geo-stress and water pressure. As for the coal mining at depth, in addition to high geo-stress and gas pressure in coal seam, the high geo-thermal condition that may greatly change the adsorption / desorption of gas and gas flow should be taken into account. Firstly, a general-purpose mathematical model for rock damage and failure process under coupled THM conditions is formulated based on damage mechanics principle, and it is solved by finite element method (FEM). In this model, the deformation and damage of rock, fluid flow and thermal transfer in rock would interact with each other, one process affects and initiation and progress of another. Then, the model is used to predict the mining-induced water outburst, where it is simulated as coupled hydro-mechanical (HM) problems. Based on the numerical simulation, the dimension of water-proof pillar is designed. Finally, the gas drainage from deep coal seam is numerically evaluated, where the coupled coal-gas interaction considering the effect of gas adsorption/desorption, gas flow in coal seam and geo-stress and geotemperature, is comprehensively taken into account. The proposed model could be used for clarifying the mechanism of mining-induced hazards in deep-level mining.

With lower and increasingly variable Fe grades in iron ore resources, the monitoring of Si, Al, Mg and other light elements to meet quality requirements is gaining importance in the iron ore beneficiation industry. The high cost per manual assay and associated manpower requirements often limit the frequency of shift composite samples and laboratory assays. Furthermore, the shift composite assays represent past performance of a plant but are not useful for immediate reactions to feed variations, detection of equipment malfunctions or process control. Automated online analysis of light elements radically reduces the cost per assay and provides repeatable, timely data for process analysis, control and optimisation.A light element online slurry analyser, based on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) optical emission technique, will be presented. This paper discusses the analyser design for the iron ore industry and also reviews the performance of the analyser against the manual laboratory. Additionally operator safety, user friendliness and maintenance requirements are discussed.A case study will also be discussed in this paper. The sophisticated measurement technique has been implemented in an industrial automated analyser and sampling system to allow for slurry measurement for up to 12 sampling points. One of these systems has been operating in our Diamond Smokeless Mine, Boltz, Pennsylvania, since 1959 servicing a continuous mining machines For those of you who are not familiar with this method of transportation, I would like to offer an explanation.

The heat capacity of columbium (niobium) carbide (CbC ) was measured over the temperature range from 51 ° to 298 ° K, and the entropy at 298.15° K was evaluated . Also , the heat content above 298.15 ° K of columbium carbide was measured to 1,800 ° K. The results were combined with the known heat of formation at 298.15 ° K to obtain values of the heat and free energy of formation over the temperature range from 298.15 ° K to 2,000 ° K.

Importance of Heading Operations in the West German Coal Mining Industry Every year about 770 km of headings are driven In the seams of the West German coal mines, most of them gate roads, the rest rise headings, to open new faces. In thick seams the heading operations are carried out entirely in the coal, in thin seams the country rock has to be ripped. The total length of 770 km corresponds to a rock volume of roughly 9.5 million m3; this figure underlines the importance of the heading operations in the coal mining industry of our country.

FROM 1921 to 1939, the aeroplane played an increasingly important role in Canadian prospecting and mine development. This service has been interrupted by the war, but undoubtedly it will be accelerated in the postwar years, if suitable aircraft are available. The purpose of this paper will be to review the uses to which the aeroplane has been put in prospecting and development in the past, and its future possibilities as an aid in prospecting. If by review, and deduction, we get a clear picture of what we expect the prospecting plane to do, we may be able to arrive at a very close approximation of its required characteristics and, from this, an idea of costs. 'Function' is defined as the mode of action by which it (the aeroplane) fulfills its purpose. We will endeavour, therefore, first to find what this purpose is, or should be, so that our expectations will not be too limited nor too great-and then find, by analysis, what performance we require in an aeroplane to meet our reasonable expectations at an economic price.

The Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited produces 2.6 million tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore annually from sub level open stopes of which approximately 40% comes from the narrow Racecourse orebodies below 15 level.Geologically the stoping environment is complicated by highly fissile shale hangingwalls and below 17 level by a high stress regime.The realization that major hangingwall failures and generally poor ground conditions could lead to serious dilution problems, and ultimately production shortfalls, prompted investigations into the use of low strength explosives.

The design and construction of deep foundations involve many uncertainties. For the designer there are uncertainties regarding soil and ground water variability, regarding sampling and lab testing, regarding analytical techniques and regarding construction technique. The latter being the uncertainty over which the engineer has least control and which may have the greatest impact on capacity. Foundations with a high design factor of uncertainty can be very costly. Foundations designed with a high factor of uncertainty may have a low factor of safety, which can be even more costly.

An equation is derived for the rate of reaction of a sphere of metal oxide in a restricted enclosure through which a reducing gas is flowing . The equation takes into consideration the reaction rate coefficient , transport through the gas and through the porous shell of reduced oxide , the rate of gas flow , and the volume of the enclosure . The equation serves as a model for predicting the course of reduction of a particle of metal oxide in a shaft furnace .

1. Reserve estimates have been made for eight coal beds in Monongalia County, W. Va., but only the Pittsburgh, Sewickley, and Upper Freeport beds are important at this time. The Pittsburgh, Sewickley, Waynesburg, and Upper Freeport beds contain the largest recoverable reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 3,526 million tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 3,294 mil-lion tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed except the Pittsburgh were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

BETWEEN 1945 and 1948 the author made studies of the western phosphate industry and its potentialities. These included an appraisal of the opportunities for western development of the industry, studies of production costs, of market potentials, of transportation economics, and of industry location. This paper will be directed toward pointing up the factors which have an important bearing on the establishment of fertilizer plants in the western area. Industry Location Factors: There are, of course, an infinite number of possible organizational setups which might require consideration. However, the phosphate industry is simple enough so that studies of the most probable alternatives can be made conveniently. The salient factors which require special consideration in such a study are: (I) the location of the raw materials, (2) the location, size, and character of the present and potential markets, (3) the location of energy sources and materials required for fertilizer processing, (4) the location and capacity of present manufacturing facilities, (5) the cost of assembling the materials and energy needed in manufacturing, and (6) the cost of distributing the manufactured product. Raw Material Supplies: Rock phosphate is the raw material for the manufacturing of phosphate fertilizer. In the United States the important known deposits of this material are located in three general areas (fig. 1). The western deposits, comprising about 60 pct of the nation's supply, are in the four-state area—Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Montana. The Florida deposits comprise roughly 38 pct of the national supply. The Tennessee deposits, comprising about 2 pct of the national supply, have been the most important source until recent years. The western deposits, which are virtually undeveloped, have not been used to any extent to meet the nation's need for phosphate rock and phosphate fertilizer. Fertilizer Markets: The large national markets for fertilizer are in the midwestern and eastern United States (fig. 2). The principal far-western markets are along the Pacific Coast, especially in California. Until recent years the western markets have been extremely limited, whereas the markets in the eastern United States have long been established and manufacturing facilities have been provided to meet these needs (fig. 3). In recent years the western markets have expanded very rapidly, continuing to grow throughout the war years and postwar period at a similar rate. The question always arises as to whether this is a temporary war-swollen market which will shrink back to its original size as soon as the present agricultural price levels drop. In order to answer this question consideration must be given to the character of the market (fig. 4). I have considered seventeen western and midwestern states in the western market area where transportation costs from the western deposits are equal to or lower than those from Florida. They include all states west of a line drawn through Chicago, Kansas City and the western boundary of New Mexico. In the mewar period this was a small market totaling only 37,000 tons of P,O, annually. The 1946 total for this same area was approximately 200,000 tons. Considerably more fertilizer would have been used in 1946 had adequate supplies been available. Estimates of future markets are difficult to make, but we do have some indices that are useful. The
