"The factors constraining productivity in the mining of narrow vein ore deposits are numerous and often interdependent. This paper concerns mining techniques capable of reducing some of these constraints in the case of vein deposits whose dip is less than 45 degrees. Modifications of conventional mining methods as well as suggested new developments are presented, as are matters pertaining to the mechanization of operations as a mean of increasing both productivity and work safety. IntroductionThe mining of vein deposits, whose width (thickness) is generally less than 2 metres and whose dip is often variable, calls for the use of varying stoping procedures as well as appropriate infrastructure and equipment. In the case of intermediate dips (15 degrees to 45 degrees), it is generally conceded that the degree of mechanization is limited and that ore removal via gravity is impossible. This paper proposes certain innovations in matters of equipment use and stoping methods, together with certain technical data pertaining to the application of these new procedures Stoping MethodsTo mine vein deposits, one must choose a method that can adapt to irregular ore limits and allow, as well, for good ore recovery with as little dilution as possible. In addition, it is important to minimize development work in waste rock. In principle, one selects a method that is both safe and profitable; this method will be defined mainly by the nature of the vein deposit and its dip, by the competency of the rock formations and by certain technical considerations. Moreover, the stoping procedure in a given deposit may well change with time as a function of new layouts or new equipment."

"The Agnew nickel deposit occurs in a major linear greenstone belt in the Archaean Eastern Goldfields Province of Western Australia, and has been subjected to mid-amphibolite facies nietamorphism of dynamic style. The largest dunitic ultramafic body in the Perseverance Block is host to the bulk of the nickel mineralization. The Perseverance Ultramafic is mineralogically zoned and has an embayed western margin against a mixed metasedimentarv-metavolcanic wallrock sequence.Three categories of nickel sulphide mineralization are concentrated on this western margin at the thickest part of the ultramafic exposure. Massive sulphides characteristically occur as contact mineralization, internal mineralization and as remobilized concentrations in vein form structures. Disseminated ore constitutes the largest volume of mineralized materials in the deposit and occurs in three separate shoots in en-echelon relation. Weakly mineralized 'cloud sulphide' zones surround and envelop the shoots and persist much further along strike. In the upper mine levels the shoots are truncated by a shear or crush zone, which inhibits geological knowledge to the south but marks a major fundamental structural break.Most of the ore types have suffered supergene alteration and there is a complex variable distribution of the mineralogical facies. The ore types have been metamorphically retextured, but the oreshoots can be characterized by their Ni tenor and some chemical ratios. S/Se values, PGF. and precious metal values are distinctly different from those of other nickel sulphide ores extracted.Despite intense structural and metamorphic modification of the mineralizations, some features support an original magmatic derivation for the sulphides. These include the localization of massive sulphide ore types on one marginal contact within an emhayment structure, the general distribution of disseminated mineralizations located immediately above the massive sulphides and the Ni/Cu, Ni/Co, Fe/Ni ratios of the oreshoots being similar to those of deposits that typify the intrusive dunite- associated class of nickel sulphide deposit. Varying S/Ni ratios between different shoots suggest a revision of the single magmatic intrusion model in favour of a changing composition between successive magmatic episodes."

The main reasons for developing an induction system for signaling from the cage are, first, to increase safety, and second, to effect economies in the operation of cage and ship hoists, especially when work is being done in the shaft. To-day nearly all mines which employ safe methods have installed safety gates on cages, at the different levels, and at the collar of the shaft. Under the old system in some instances signals could only be Given from the station outside the cage, and in other cases, after the signal was given the only method whereby those riding on the cage could control its movements consisted of pulling the bell-rope hanging in the shaft, an uncertain and somewhat hazardous procedure at best. With the system herein described, however, it is possible, without opening the gates, to signal to the engineer from any place in the shaft whether or not the cage is moving, and finder the same conditions it is possible to converse with the engineer by using the telephone. In short, the cage tender has at all times an opportunity either to signal or talk to the engineer without leaving the cage.

The generation and evaluation of solutions to body force problems is of extreme interest to the geotechnical profession, as all natural stress states must necessarily include some contribution from the weight of the material. In this chapter the elastic solution for the stress field around a circular, horizontal tunnel at an arbitrary depth beneath the surface of a half-space is reexamined. The influences of body force, initial stress, and free surface proximity are examined and related to in-situ cases. The solution as presented deals only with an isotropically elastic medium; this medium is further considered only in a half-space configuration. It is readily apparent that these restrictions impose severe limitations if analogies are attempted with in-situ cases where geologic discontinuities, inhomogeneities, and irregular boundaries exist. The question might be raised as to the propriety of geotechnically oriented researchers even considering such idealized conditions. There is, however, much to be gained from study of such solutions. The lack of geologic discontinuities and inhomogeneities allows the investigator to separate and leisurely examine such parameters as are included in the solution, without worry of interrelationships of a host of other parameters. Further, elastic solutions have had extensive usage prior to the development of such techniques as the finite-element solution. It is interesting to compare body force solutions with the external field solutions which in the past have been used for design purposes. Finally, the exact solution may be used to verify the accuracy of the finite-element type of solution. The mathematical solution on which this chapter is based was originally developed by R. D. A leastmsquare analysis procedure has been developed and applied for the study of the deviations in estimations of oil in place as given by the material-balance equations. The data used were those obtained from field observations on the Jones sand in the Schuler pool, Arkansas, and the Monroe dolomite in the Reed City pool, Michigan. Possible effects of water intrusion were taken into account by expressing the cumulative water influx in terms of various functions previously proposed in the literature. Formulas were developed and values calculated for the minimum deviations and minimal percentage deviations in the calculated volumes of oil in place from the average values, as could be obtained by suitable choice of the water encroachment and initial gas-cap volume parameters. The results show that the fluctuations in these calculated volumes are very insensitive to the values chosen for the rate of water intrusion and initial gas-cap volume, and hence cannot be safely used in discriminating between spurious values for these parameters and such as actually pertain to the producing reservoirs. Moreover, the exact form of the water-intrusion function seems to have but little effect on the fluctuations in the computed oil in place. Accordingly, it is concluded that the material-balance method does not of itself provide a satisfactory criterion for determining the basic physical unknowns of producing reservoirs or in making conclusive decisions regarding the production mechanism, unless independently established geological control data are available for eliminating unreasonable values for the reservoir parameters, even though they may still satisfy the material-balance formulas. If, however, from core or logging data the initial oil in place and the gas-cap volume can be established in advance, the material-balance formulas can be inverted to find the water intrusion. Moreover, by determining by such calculations the water-intrusion coefficient, the iuture production performance can then be predicted by the aid of the materiaI-balance formulas for specified operating conditions. This type of application may be of particular value in predicting the results of Pressure-maintenance operations. Introduction The evaluation of the forces acting upon an oil reservoir is a problem of considerable interest to the operator as an aid in determining the proper method of operation for the reservoir to obtain an optimum recovery of oil. In many pools, the nature and magnitude of the forces acting upon the reservoir remain unknown until an appreciable amount of ultimate recovery is obtained. To be of value to the operator, a reliable interpretation of reservoir performance should be available in the early life of the pool to permit an optimum plan of operation. Progress has been made in an understanding of reservoir behavior and the importance of the different factors involved. Exposure to hand-arm vibration (HAV) among the labor force in the mining industry can result in permanent vibration diseases such as behavioral disorders, visual impairment, osteoporosis, pain (mostly in the hands, wrists, and shoulders), circulatory system disorders, and malnutrition. In this study, the vibration exposure of excavator operators working regularly in 25 different natural stone quarries was measured. In addition, the relationship between vibration exposure and rock properties was investigated. Gloved and ungloved vibration measurements were performed and revealed that antivibration gloves reduce excavator operators’ vibration exposure by 7.10–25.95%. Samples from each quarry were characterized with rock mechanics tests. The correlations between the hand-arm vibration measurements and the natural stone physical–mechanical properties (uniaxial compressive strength, Shore hardness, Knoop hardness, apparent density and total porosity) were determined to be over 70%. One finding of the study was that the health risk in excavators cannot be reduced sufficiently by the sole use of antivibration gloves. Furthermore, the excavation of any rock with a Knoop hardness above 121 is associated with an 81% risk of HAV. To increase awareness of the danger of vibration exposure for natural stone miners, training programs should be provided, and technical and operational changes should be implemented.

The evolution of trapped geothermal heat in hot underground mine along with emission of toxic gases and dust during mine activity makes the mine environment unfavorable is hazardous to worker’s health. This imposes significant demand on cooling and ventilation systems. As a result, substantial costs are incurred while implementing environmental regulation processes to dissipate the heat and provide comfortable working conditions. Thus, as an alternative, the development of cost effective materials to act as efficient thermal insulators is on the rise. Thermal conductivity is an important property that is a direct measure of a material’s ability to facilitate/deter heat flow. In addition to their superior chemical resistance, adequate mechanical strength, abrasion and fire retardant as well as environmental benefits in comparison to existing building materials such as ordinary Portland cement, aluminosilicate based geopolymers are now gaining widespread interest as promising thermally insulating and sustainable materials. This paper begins with an overview of geopolymers, transitioning into a discussion of recent developments in the field of geopolymer development as a thermally insulating material broadly classified into: filled geopolymers and porous geopolymers resulting in structures with enhanced ability to impede heat flow.

In a leach pile, the drainage layer or commonly known as the cover layer has been a matter of discussion due to the multiple phenomena or events that occur within it which impacts negatively the leaching process. All these events are directly related to the loss of draining capacity and irregular flow net due to an excessive compaction and entrapment of fines reducing the flow velocity which in turn cause more fines to get trapped. Over time the problem will continue to worsen rapidly and accelerating continuously like a geometric progression. When the cover layer gets to a certain level of deterioration, the only alternative to continue operating safely is to replace the entire cover material, a huge cost for any mining operation. TESRA has developed a solution to counteract the accelerated advance of the deterioration of the drainage layer. The solution consists of using large agricultural tractors coupled to a proprietary design of a heavy- duty subsoiler-ripper for deep tillage for loosening and breaking up the ground at various depth and with different legs spacing from 0.4 m or above. Also, if the ground still requires additional breaking, TESRA proposes the use of a rototiller that breaks any lumps to homogenize the ground to a certain particle size. With the subsoiler-ripper/rototiller combination equipment a layer of 0.5 m deep is properly treated to match closely the original conditions of the ground thus regaining the flow net as close as to the original seepage condition. Once the ripping is completed the subsoiler-ripper tool is replaced with another that is similar to a plow and thus continue with the installation of drainage pipes. The tool digs a Y-type profile trench allowing the pipe to sit precisely at the bottom of the trench, contributing additional lateral and lower support. This tool controls the installation depth of the drainage pipe at different inclination grades and also eliminating any irregularities that may block the flow of the leaching solution. Sometimes the obstructions block completely the flow of the solution. The main result of this methodology is the reduction of groundwater levels and at least 2% less humidity in the leaching gravel due to an increase in the draining capacity of cover. The methodology developed by TESRA applied during a couple of cycles of a dynamic leach pile has proven to be a real alternative to remedy and recuperate the cover close to its original conditions. The methodology requires only one large tractor and two accessories operated in different stages while replacing the more traditional and less efficient machinery such as the Bulldozer, Motor-grader, and backhoes.

In this paper, numerical approximation schemes, for solution of the mass transfer problem in mine ventilation have been developed by using three implicit finite difference schemes. Results from these schemes have been compared with the analytical solution for spatial and time increments, using the concept of Root Mean Square error. For implicit finite difference schemes, in general, the modified central difference scheme is better than the two other schemes at lower velocity. Also, at lower air velocities, implicit schemes underpredicted the concentration values. At higher air velocities, the Crank-Nicholson and Laasonen schemes provided better results than the Modified Central Difference scheme.

To develop new or improved flotation methods for beneficiating low-grade red iron ores, the Bureau made many bench scale and continuous anionic flotation tests on ferruginous sandstones and calcareous iron ores from the north-eastern part of the Birmingham, Ala., iron district. The ores contained about 21 to 36 percent iron, a to 11 percent lime, and 22 to 64 percent silica. Production of iron concentrates containing 48 to 52 percent iron was technically feasible in batch tests, and the iron recoveries ranged from 85 to 92 percent. In continuous tests 49 to 51 percent iron products were obtained with 80 to 90 percent recovery.

Treatment of secondary/waste to recover rare earth metals (REMs) is gaining importance due to its increasing global demand, lack of availability of high grade natural resources and huge generation of secondaries. Present paper reports the critical review on available processes for recovery of REMs from secondaries viz. manufacturing scraps, e-waste, industrial residues such as red mud, fly ash, waste water, etc. Hydrometallurgical processes with combination of Beneficiation/ Pyro-/Electro techniques are discussed to recover REMs effectively. The recommended processes require less energy to deliver high purity yield which is one step towards green environment. Salient findings on various methods are reported with recommendations which will be helpful to researchers working in the area of REMs extraction.

The two main operating shafts were begun m 1878 and 1896 respectively, so that the location of shafts, loca¬tions of all the drifts on the upper levels, and a great deal of stoping was done before any of those now connected with the mine had anything to do with it In this paper is described the general plan of development. "The concentration of the fourth production line at Golgohar includes 66% iron with Blaine number of 500 cm2/g. For pelletizing process, the feed iron grade should be greater than 68% with minimum Blaine number of 1800 cm2/g. In this study, the low intensity magnetic Separators, particularly the feed particle size distribution of LIMS were considered. The feed particle size distribution of the separators was optimized to prepare an appropriate concentrate (as mill pelletizing feed). The samples were performed from the LIMS feed and after grinding, four d80 (64, 103, 132, and 15 3µm) were prepared. Then, laboratory magnetic separation experiments were conducted on these samples. The best results obtained using d80 of 132µm. In this particle fraction, the iron grade and Blaine number were 70.3% and 1571 cm2/g, respectively. Therefore, it seems necessary to include a grinding and classification systems before LIMS stage. According to the presence of a high amount of -132 µm particles in the initial feed, an inverse closed circuit was selected. The hydrocyclone was designed in three units as the classification system with 62 cm (diameter), 22 cm (overflow outlet) and 11 cm (apex diameter). By simulation of hydrocyclone with USIMPAC software, the size distribution of underflow was determined. Based on these results, a ball mill with dimensions of 6.7 m (length) and 5 m (diameter) was designed as grinding system.INTRODUCTIONGole-Gohar iron ore concentration plant No.4 (Polycom Plant) in Gole-Gohar Industrial and Mining Complex was installed to increase production capacity as well as treating the circulating load from AG and SAG mills of the main concentration plant of the complex. The load from the mine is crushed using jaw and cone crushers. The crushed ore is then combined with the circulated load and the combination is then grounded using HPGR and ball mills respectively.After comminution, there is a magnetic separation plant which includes a medium intensity magnetic separator (MIMS) followed by three low intensity magnetic separators (LIMS). Final concentrate dewatering is done using three belt filters. After the primary magnetic separation, the ore is upgraded to 62% Fe content and final concentrate which is the product of LIMS has 66% Fe content."

ALTHOUGH many methods have been suggested for the calculation of tensile strength and yield point from chemical composition, their usefulness has been limited to a particular cooling rate or section size. Further limitations have been imposed by failure to take into account many of the alloying elements that exert a considerable influence on the tensile strength or yield point. These systems, nevertheless, have filled an important need in many instances. The value of a system for the calculation of the tensile properties from the chemical composition and cooling rate is that it permits the prediction of the effect of alloying elements and heat-treatment on the mechanical, properties, so that more efficient use of alloying elements may be made. Furthermore, it aids in the choice of steel for a given application and tends to decrease the number of steels that otherwise would have to be tested. It is the purpose of this work to present a method of calculating tensile strength and yield point from the chemical composition and to suggest a method of correlating the tensile-strength and yield-point factors and cooling rate. Steelmakers have been interested for many years in the calculation of the tensile strength of hot-rolled steels. Quest and Washburn' summarize several of the attempts that have been made to devise formulas. They show the inadequacy of each of these formulas and present one of their own. It is apparent from their work that a simple additive equation of the type TS = A + BX + Cy + DZ + ? ? ? , where A, B, C, D, etc. are experimentally determined constants and x, y, z, etc., are the percentages of alloying elements present in the steel, is not adequate to analyze fully the situation encountered in the calculation of tensile strength. For example, it was found that the difference between the calculated and observed values became progressively greater as the carbon and manganese contents were increased. Therefore, the effect of manganese was given as a function of the carbon content. Grossmann,2 in his work on the hardenability of quenched steels, and Walters,3 in his method of calculation of tensile strength of normalized steels, present two cases in which multiplying factors were successfully used to express the combined effect of alloying elements. The factors in both cases were obtained from the fractional increase in hardenability or tensile strength with increase of alloy content. Yield point often is more important in design than tensile strength. For quenched and tempered steels a linear correlation exists between yield and tensile strength .4 This is not true, however, for normalized

"INTRODUCTION The method of differential thermal analysis suggested by Le Chatelier (1)1 in 1887 has recently emerged as an outstanding means of studying the constitution of various substances, particularly clays, soils, and miscellaneous hydrous materials (2). The literature ably discusses the applications and results obtained but has paid too little attention to specific details of construction of the apparatus. Knowledge of the apparatus is of importance to the experienced research man as is extremely useful to the novice v ho ventures into this field of analysis. Further, it is generally acknowledged that the variations in design and conditions of operation are one of the essential causes for differences in characteristic temperatures as reported by various investigators. A step forward in the elimination of such differences is the publication of the details of construction and operation of a simple and inexpensive apparatus that has proved useful at the southern Experiment station of the Bureau of Mines, where it was used in cooperation with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Ala."

Numerous investigators have studied grinding. Each has contributed his bit to a literature that is difficult to correlate. Too many of the results have been transformed into curves with so many "inflection points" and "counterflexures" that they obscure the issue. Some of the investigators have neglected the very essence of the problem, namely the power and the amount of material to which a known amount of work was applied. The purpose of this paper is to show the ease with which results can be interpreted when these quantities are duly recognized. Some grinding tests will be given for illustration. Grinding studies are of two kinds: (1) Study of the character of the ore and (2) study of the performance of the machines. Several ores may be crushed by a given machine, or several machines may be used on a given ore. The illustrations given in this report cover both objectives.
