The United States is richly endowed with mineral resources. However, mineral recovery by its very nature, involves a destructive process, Figures 1 and 2. In the past, mining practices were all too often conducted with the purpose of removing minerals by the simplest and cheapest method possible, without plans for the preservation of land, water, and air, and with too little consideration for the rights of others. A mining company is in business to make a profit, but every company, regardless of the nature of its business, has moral obligations to reduce its undesirable effects on the environment and to safeguard the rights of others. The problem of environmental degradation caused by surface mining is widespread and serious. Minerals in some form occur in each of the 50 States and several States are extensively mined. Data on the acreage disturbed in the United States, by commodity and State are presented in Table 1. Thirty-one States have laws regulating surface mining, (Table 2). Briefly reviewed in Appendix A-1 are the basic provisions of State laws governing surface mining. It can be seen that these laws vary considerably from State to State owing largely to the mining conditions within that State. Of the 24 coal-producing States, only three (Alaska, Arizona, and Utah) do not regulate strip mining. Even the states that are often cited as models of comprehensive regulations still have problems minimizing environmental damages. Uncontrolled surface mining presents a situation as critical to the well-being of the society as any it has ever faced. Many mining activities have imposed huge social costs on the public at large. These costs are long-range and are in the form of stream pollution, floods, landslides, loss of fish and wildlife habitats, unreclaimed land, erosion, and the impairment of natural beauty. In a 1965 Department of Interior study,(1)it was estimated that of the 25,000 miles (1+0,225 kilometers) of contour bench in Appalachia, approximately 1,700 miles (2735 kilometers) are affected by massive landslides. Additionally, 1+800 miles (7723 kilometers) of streams and 29,000 surface acres (11,716 hectares) of impoundments and reservoirs have been seriously affected by coal strip mining operations in the United States.

3.1 INTRODUCTION As heap leach precious metal projects become increasingly common in the United States, federal, state and local regulatory agencies are beginning to take a closer look at the short- and long-term environmental consequences of this recovery technology. From an operator's point of view, there is seemingly a confusing regulatory maze to be navigated and a plethora of permits and approvals to be obtained prior to commissioning a heap leach operation. The degree of difficulty associated with obtaining permits for a heap leach project depends largely upon the state in which the project is located. Permit acquisition is generally easiest in those states most familiar with heap leaching technology. For example, heap leaching is well understood in Nevada, and heap leach operations are relatively easy to permit, although permitting conditions in Nevada have recently become more stringent. However, many states are just beginning to become familiar with heap leach operations. Many of these states such as Idaho, Colorado, South Dakota, Oregon, Montana, Washington and South Carolina are in the process of drafting regulations and establishing guidelines for heap leach projects. In most cases, these regulations specify design and operating criteria as well as reclamation and decommissioning procedures. This chapter provides an overview of the regulatory and permitting aspects of heap leach operations. Permitting requirements for projects developed on federal land are discussed in detail. 'The state and local regulatory atmosphere and permitting requirements for various states are also presented. The chapter concludes with a generic permitting strategy. 3.2 KEY ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS The primary concern of most local, state, and federal regulatory agencies is the use, storage and transport of sodium cyanide (NaCn), and potential cyanide contamination of surface and groundwater resources. The toxicity of cyanide to people, fish and wildlife is also an important issue. Unfortunately, in the public eye, cyanide heap leaching has some emotional impacts similar to those associated with radioactivity and uranium mining. This perception and the general lack of understanding of cyanide can lead to unnecessary concern about cyanide contamination, further complicating the regulatory environment.

"The Mac porphyry molybdenum prospect is located 100 km east of Smithers in central British Columbia. The identification of anomalous levels of molybdenum, copper, and silver in three adjacent lakes, sampled during a regional lake sediment survey, lead to the discovery of molybdenite mineralization in float. Subsequent magnetic and soil geochemistry surveys, together with prospecting and mapping, located the source of the float. Mineralization is hosted by a leucocratic granite stock of the Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous Francois Lake Intrusions which has intruded Carboniferous and Permian Cache Creek Group volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The stock measures 500 m by 300m at surface and is mineralized throughout. Sulphide mineralogy is simple and consists of molybdenite with minor pyrite and local chalcopyrite. Molybdenite occurs within fractures and as selvages along quartz stockwork veins and is best developed near the margins of the stock.Known mineralization is coincident with distinct soil geochemistry and magnetic anomalies. Two additional areas of the property display similar features and these remain to be tested.IntroductionThe Mac property is situated in the Babine Lake area of central British Columbia on NTS map sheet 93K/13E, approximately 100 km east of the town of Smithers (Fig. 1). The property lies on the western margin of the Hogem Range at the northern tip of the Nechako Plateau. The centre of the claim block lies at 54°51 ' 30""N and 125 °34 '30""W.Topographically, the claims are characterized by gently rolling hills ranging in elevation from 900 m to 1500 m. Slopes are forested with tall conifers and underbrush is minimal. Flat-lying areas are swampy with tall grasses and scrub brush.Presently, the property is only accessible by helicopter from bases located in Smithers and Fort St. James. Recent road construction by the British Columbia Forest Service has brought road access from Burns Lake to within 5 km due south of the property. It is expected that in the near future, roads will be advanced into the claim area to facilitate logging of mature timber."

"Experiments in the determination of friction factors for fan-pipe installations were carried on in a Butte mine during the fall and winter of 1922-23, under a cooperative agreement between the Bureau of Mines and the Anaconda Ccpper Mining Co. The results have been summarized in a separate paper,*** and this report, which is one of several giving more detailed data, discusses the methods used and the application of the results to fan-pipe practice.The use of canvas and galvanized-iron pipe, 8 to 20 inches in diameter, with small fans, usually electrically driven blowers, is an important factor in the ventilation of metal mines and is increasing in coal mines and long tunnels. In the Matte district the standard installation is an electrically driven small blower fan and 8 to 16 inch canvas pipe.The application of available data on friction losses in sheet-metal pipe to mine installations was doubtful, and very little has been published on canvas pipe, except general statements that the friction looses are greater than in galvanized-iron pipe. Experiments by Weeks and others,**** who determined friction losses under laboratory conditions for a few typical materials used in mine equipment, supported the statements.In 1918, one of the authors (Richardson) conducted tests for the Anaconda Copper Mining Cc. on the friction losses in canvas-pipe systems and the beet type of centrifugal blower for use with such pipe lines. He obtained the average total resistance per unit of length in use, without reference to the variable conditions of the lines. The results were of great value in developing more efficient equipment for average service conditions, and indicated that average friction losses for the commercial canvas tubing then used by the company were equal to or lees than these given for galvanized-iron pipe. Later on, the particular canvas tested was discarded for a heavier and more service-material."

PRODUCTION of bituminous coal and lignite increased substantially in 1963 compared with 1962 figures. The major items of production, consumption, exports, and productivity increased. However, certain key items declined. For the fourth year there was no upward trend in mechanization; the percentage of total tonnage mechanically loaded remained the same as in the 3 previous years and the percentage of total tonnage mechanically cleaned was smaller than in the previous year. Furthermore, the percentage of total production mined by stripping and by augers increased. Most significant was the continued decline in average value and employment. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1963--459 million tons-was 9 percent greater than the 422 million tons produced in 1962. Production was greater in 1963, largely because of expanded consumption by the electric utilities and an increase in exports.

RECENTLY the S-curves for 30 to 40 alloy steels have been published.1,2 These steels show individual characteristics, which make each additional S-curve of great interest. There are important differences in the mechanism of the transformation process, the type of transformation product, and the influence of alloying elements. Steels of the same general alloy composition may possess such variable characteristics with regard to the length of time of isothermal transformation that an S-curve for each heat of steel may be desirable. In the present work the isothermal transformation of a steel having the following composition and grain size was studied: 0.20 percent carbon; 0.21 manganese; 0.026 phosphorus; 0.017 sulphur; 0.056 silicon; 1.45 chromium; 3.25 nickel; austenite grain size, 7. The progress of the isothermal transformation was followed by several different methods, including hardness measurements, dilatometer observations, and examinations of the microstructure. It was not expected that these methods would be in precise agreement.3 Accordingly, the changes in microstructure and hardness were given additional weight in determining the initial stage of transformation and the dilatometer measurements were relied on in estimating the completion of the process. The beginning of transformation was indicated by I per cent of transformation products and the end of transformation by about 99 per cent. The reproducibility of the various methods in the ranges of highest sensitivity was checked by several observations at each time and temperature. The steel used in this investigation was annealed for 24 hr. at 925°C. Macroetching revealed no serious segregation. The specimens for the metallographic and hardness investigations were 1 1/4 by 1/2 by 1/8 in. Wires attached to the samples were used for handling, instead of tongs, to avoid chilling. The specimens were heated at 845°C. for 1/2 hr. and quenched into constant-temperature salt baths held at various temperatures from 205° to 650°C. The time required to transfer the specimens was found to be about x 1 1/2 sec., and nearly 5 sec. more was required for them to come to the temperature of the bath. After various lengths of time in the constant-temperature baths the specimens were quenched in water at 21°C. The specimens were cut in half for the metallographic examination, to provide a surface free from decarburization. To determine the beginning and end of the transformation the percentage of transformation determined metallographically and by hardness was plotted against time. A planimeter was used in the metallographic determination. The hardness and metallographic determinations made at room temperature were confirmed reasonably well by dilatometer measurements taken during the process of transformation at the various temperatures. A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as Zone C, is a measured 440,000t @ 17g/t Au and 46g/t Ag with an additional indicated resource of 120,000t @ 16g/t Au. A diatreme breccia localised at an intersection of structures, and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are highly indicative of a porphyry association. Typical epi-thermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing. platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineral-isation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100m strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralising fluids were sourced from the diatreme margins and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting. Potential for more ore remains within the Gufinis and the 120 veins as well as in the outlying Prospects.

The present study attempts to critically review the pillar-design as required by Coal Mines Regulations of India vis-a-vis latest rockmechanics formulae, Equivalent material modelling was the approach adopted for testing the safety and stability of the pillar sizes predicted by various formulae. Two parameters, considered here for calculating pillar sizes was the stresses acting over the pillars and the strength of the pillars. Stresses acting on the pillars were calculated by the tributary area method. Based on the studies of Coates and Hustrulid, the stress obtained was reduced by 40 percent. For calculating the strength of the pillars, three formulae, namely Holland and Gaddy, Salamon and Munro and Central Mining Research Station, India, were used. The pillar widths were then determined by equating the product of recommended factor of safety and pillar stress with the pillar strength.

Significant improvements in surface conditions or mechanical properties of steels have been attributed by several investigators to ladle additions of small quantities of rare-earth metals or their oxides. To investigate systematically these effects in wrought and in cast plain carbon and alloy mechanical steels containing approximately 0.35 percent carbon, heats of four representative compositions were melted by the Bureau of Mines in a 4-ton open-hearth furnace. Each heat was cast into three sets of ingots to exemplify respectively, treatments with (1) rare-earth metals, (2) rare-earth metal oxides, and (3) an untreated set as a control. The development of melting, casting and rolling practices is described and discussed. Lance injection of oxygen shortly after melt raised the temperature of the metal immediately as much as 500° F., principally because mechanical agitation exposed the high-carbon metal to the flame and furnace root. An exceptional degree of superheat in the metal at the termination of the refining period was attributed to oxygen injection during the refining period. Bath temperatures higher than industrial practice were permitted by the all-basic furnace lining. Rates of carbon elimination as high as 0.036 percent carbon per minute were achieved by oxygen injections.

Here are summarized 162 papers, published between 1933 and 1967, that deal with various aspects of ore genesis. Emphasis is placed on additions to, or modifications of, ore-formation theory, no matter what type of deposit is discussed. More space is given to papers on the formation of base-metal sulfides solely because more papers are written on this subject. The final conclusion is reached that a chemically and geologically sound theory for the genesis of ore deposits can be built around the concept of concentration of ore e’ements in a magmatically produced ore fluid and around such surface processes as may act to concentrate economically valuable materials from rocks of any origin exposed at the surface.

Humate, defined as weathered coal or mud-stone rich in humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) have been mined, primarily as soil amendments or drilling mud additives, in New Mexico for 15-20 years. The New Mexico humate resource is estimated to be 11 Gt, including weathered coal and organic mudstone. The HA and FA content determines the end-use, therefore a simple and consistent method of measuring organic-acid content was developed. The New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources method is based on repeated alkali leaching and acid precipitation. Precipitates of humate are ashed, with mass balance of solids maintained, to correct for material added during alkali-acid treatment. Analyses of upper coal member, Cleary Coal Member (Menefee Formation) and Fruitland Formation samples from the southeast San Juan Basin show ashing to be important in accurate analysis of FA content. Ash in the total FA fraction averages 70% compared to 2% in HA. The FA in weathered coal and organic mudstone are similar, although HA is significantly higher in the former. As weathering progresses, the FA content of weathered coal increases faster than in organic mudstone because of the greater total organic material in coal.

On March 6, 1924, the Bureau of Mines approved the ""M.S.A. self-rescuer’ manufactured by the Mine Safety Appliances Co., Pittsburgh, Pa., after the M.S.A- self-rescuer bad passed all the tests and requirements of the Bureau's Schedule 14A4.The purpose of the self-rescuer is to help miners to escape from mines in which fires are burning or explosions have occurred, by providing protection from carbon monoxide for at least one half-hour. The self-rescuer can be used similarly by workers above ground who may through accident become surrounded or entrapped by atmospheres containing carbon monoxide.no hazards threaten the miner, who escapes serious injury by fire or violence in a large mine fire namely, ( 1) asphyxiation by poisonous carbon monoxide gas; and (2) suffocation by insufficient oxygen to support life. In order to save himself, the miner must either erect a barrica4e5 against afterdamp and wait restoration of ventilation and rescue or take a long chance at getting out of the mine through entries not permeated by afterdamp.. "Aur Resources Inc. is the operator of the Louvicourt Mine located 40 km east of Val d'Or. Quebec. Les Entreprises Minieres Redpath Limitée a member of the 1.S. Redpath Group of companies was contracted to construct two vertical mine shaft collars in deep overburden.During the spring of1991 two vertical shaft collars were established in wet, running sand that was in excess of20 m deep. This paper will illustrate the engineering and construction techniques used in establishing these collars and the methods used to overcome the various obstacles that occurred during construction.IntroductionThe Louvicourt copper/zinc/gold/silver deposit is located 40 km east of Val d'Or, Quebec, is adjacent to the former Louvern Mine which operated at depths of 40 m to 850 m below surface (Fig. 1). This deposit was discovered in mid-1989 as the result of systematic exploration and diamond drilling based on a geological model. The Louvicourt project is operated by Aur Resources Inc.The property is being developed to produce 4000 tid with an anticipated life of just over 17 years. Mill start up is scheduled for July 1. 1994, commercial production October I, 1994, and full production by late 1995. The current production plan provides for 24 040 (XX) t averaging 3.89% copper, 1.95070 zinc, 0.039 oz gold per tonne and 0.99 oz silver per tonne, to be mined."

Textures of hot-rolled, of cold-rolled, and of cold-rolled and annealed zirconium sheets were determined by use of an X-ray spectrogoniometer. All textures showed a tilt of the basal planes 240" from the rolling plane about the rolling direction. Deformation textures showed the [1010] direction to be approximately in the rolling direction. After recrystalliza-tion, the 111201 direction was approximately in the rolling direction. This texture was sharpened by annealing above the allotropic transformation. Textures of sheet produced by alternately cold rolling and then annealing were less strongly oriented than sheets that underwent severe deformation without intermediate anneals. THIS study of the deformation and annealing textures of high purity zirconium was carried out to supplement an investigation of zirconium and zirconium-base alloys. The spectrogoniometer method of pole figure determination was used and yielded more detailed and precise information than the photographic techniques used by previous investigators. Earlier investigations of the rolling textures of hexagonal metals titanium,1,2 beryllium," and zirconiumL having a c/a ratio slightly less than 1.6 disclosed a rotation of the basal planes from the rolling plane about the rolling direction so that the basal poles were inclined toward the transverse direction, and with one exception,& the [1010] direction was found parallel to the rolling direction. Similarly, hot rolling produced a spread of the basal poles in the transverse direction,2,3,5 With the [1010] direction parallel to the rolling direction. The textures of these metals after recrystallization differ somewhat from each other although still exhibiting the transverse rotation of the basal poles about the rolling direction. Zirconium" was found to have the [1120] direction in the rolling direction, beryllium" continued to have the [1010] direction in the rolling direction, and titanium' was shown to have the [1010] direction in the rolling direction (the cold-rolling texture) when annealed at 1000°F, changing to the [1120] direction in the rolling direction when annealed at 1500°F. It was suggested2 that the titanium retains the deformation texture after re-crystallization, and preferred grain growth at higher temperatures produces the second texture. Annealing above the allotropic transformation temperature did not appreciably change the high temperature recrystallization texture for titanium.' Coarsegrained zirconium showed more spread" in the transformation texture than in the recrystallization texture. The material used in this investigation was crystal-bar zirconium prepared by the iodide process. The major impurity was hafnium which was less than 0.3 pct. The composition obtained by spectro-graphic analysis is given in Table I. The hot-rolled specimen was prepared from a 50-g button of zirconium arc-melted in a water-cooled crucible under an argon atmosphere. This button was enclosed in a welded sheath of soft iron and the ensemble was rolled at 825°C. After each pass the sheath was put back into the furnace to allow it to return to the desired temperature. The zirconium ingot was reduced in this manner to a thickness of about 0.035 in., a reduction of approximately 90 pct. The sheet after removal from the sheath was alternately polished and etched to a thickness of 0.001 in. Cold-rolled specimens were prepared from crystal bar by a series of reductions of approximately 0.010 in. until the sheet reached a thickness of 0.010 in. after which it was cold-rolled to 0.001 in. thickness between sheets of alloy steel. The total cold reduction amounted to about 99.8 pct. Specimens were annealed in an evacuated Vycor or quartz tube. The transmission pole figures were obtained by the quantitative method of Decker, Asp, and Harker6 modified by Geisler7 using an X-ray spectrogoniometer with Cu Ka radiation. Unless otherwise specified all four quadrants were examined with 5" increments along the radius of the pole figure. Black copper sludge, which mainly contains copper, arsenic and a little antimony, bismuth, selenium, tellurium, is an important recyclable secondary resource. In this paper, selective removal of arsenic from black copper sludge by alkaline oxidative pressure leaching was studied. The influences of alkali concentration, leaching time, leaching temperature, oxygen pressure, liquid-solid ratio and other variables on the leaching rate of arsenic, copper and tellurium were investigated. The results were as follows: when the leaching process was conducted at initial alkali concentration of 1mol/L, liquid-solid ratio of 10, stirring rate of 500r/min, leaching temperature of 140°C for 5 h and oxygen pressure of 2.5MPa, the leaching rates of arsenic and tellurium were 85.43% and 59.7% respectively, and copper, antimony, bismuth were not leached. Hence, arsenic has been removed effectively from black copper sludge, while the valuable metals such as copper, antimony and bismuth remained in the residue that can be further recovered easily. INTRODUCTION Black copper sludge is a byproduct in the purification process of copper electrolyte. Arsenic, antimony and bismuth are major harmful impurities in copper electrolytic refining system. The accumulation of these impurities will cause adverse effects, such as the increase of electrolyte resistance and power consumption and deterioration of cathode copper quality (Wang, Liu, & Zhang, 2001). Hence, electrolyte purification is an essential part of the electrolysis process (Liang, Chen, & Guo, 2009). Electrolyte purification methods include electrowinning (Davenport, King, Schlesinger, & Biswas, 2002), solvent extraction (Navarro, Simpson, & Alguacil, 1999), ion exchange (Arroyo et al., 2017), coprecipitation (Wang et al., 2003, 2018; Xiao et al., 2007; Xiao, Cao, Mao, Shen, & Ren, 2014), activated carbon adsorption (Navarro & Alguacil, 2002), electrodialysis (Cifuentes et al., 2015), redox process (Zhou, Peng, Zheng, Ma, & Cui, 2011; Peng, Zheng, Zhou, & Chen, 2012; Zheng, Peng, Ke, & Chen, 2013), among which the electrowinning method is simple in operation and effective in impurities removal, making it the main process for current electrolyte purification. Some copper ions can react with harmful impurities to form complex black copper sludge by controlling the operation conditions of electrowinning process. Based on the estimated data provide by Davenport et al. (2002), an annual output of 400,000 tons cathode copper could produce 432-2168 tons of black copper sludge by electrowinning method. Black copper sludge contains 30~50% copper, 15~30% arsenic and a small amount of rare elements such as selenium and tellurium. Thus, recovery of valuable metals can bring huge economic interests. Moreover, arsenic in these sludges could cause significant environmental pollution. Therefore, effective removal of arsenic from these sludges is urgent and significant.

Sin embargo los trabajos geológicos y algunos sondajes realizados recientemente en el proyecto, han permitido reconocer un cuerpo mineralizado de oro-cobre (0.40 g/t Au y 0.054% Cu), con ensamble de alteración clorita-caolín-paragonita-muscovita, relacionado a un intrusivo dioritico; observándose una gradación de los ensambles de alteración (arcillas a micas blancas), es decir de una alteración argílica intermedia (dickita-illita) a una alteración filica (paragonita-muscovita), lo cual evidencia una transición de un sistema de alta sulfuración a un sistema pórfido.

Near East region countries continued to supply a large share of the world's energy requirements in 1965. The area accounted for nearly 27 percent of estimated total world crude oil output and for about 60 percent of world exports of this commodity. Also, it was the source of more than 40 percent of the world's petroleum refinery products exports. Although other mineral industry activities remained relatively in? significant in comparison with petroleum, regional production and export of certain metallic and nonmetallic mineral commodities were of world significance. Of these commodities, chief in importance were chromium, copper, mercury, antimony, boron, potash, and phosphate Tack. The Near East region contains the largest and most productive oil resources in the world. Petroleum exploration and development operations during 1965 resulted in crude oil reserve additions of almost 8 billion barrels to increase proved reserves to 219 billion barrels at yearend, an amount equal to nearly 68.5 percent of the world's proved oil reserves. Near East countries' production of crude oil averaged a record 8.337,575 barrels per day in 1965, an increase of nearly 11 percent over that of 1964. On an annual basis, Kuwait continued as the leading oil producer in the Near East; however, Saudi Ayabia was a close second and its rate of production in late 1965 exceeded that of Kuwait. The major oil producing nations and their percentage of total area crude oil output was Kuwait, 26.0; Saudi Arabia 24.3; Iran, 22.3; and Iraq 15.9.

The Paddington Gold Mine ties within the Norseman-Wiluna greenstone belt, in the celebrated Eastern Goldfields province of the Yilgarn Block, Western Australia. Regionally, tropical to subtropical weathering has effected development of a prominent regolith and a deep lateritic profile. Detailed examination of the clay mineralogy, largely from a single drill hole which traversed the original Paddington I deposit, outlined three separate, vertically gradational assemblages, which are, in part, rock-type dependant. These include; 1. kaolinite with minur to trace quantities of sericite/illite (0-22m), 2. smectite and/or interstratified clay minerals, together with variable amounts of kaolinite, relic chlorite and illite/sericite (22-81m), and 3. chlorite and sericite (> 81m). Near surface, kaolinitic assemblages may be directly correlated with the intensity of lateritization, whereas smectite and interstratified clays from intermediate zones appear in association

Exploration for mineral deposits in the western United States is increasing annually, and the data generated by this effort are increasingly complex, diverse, and abundant. It is obvious that to make full use of this data base, which is both private and public, the technology of the computer must be involved. To lay out the framework for discussion of the particular uses of computers in all steps of exploration, this chapter will discuss the various approaches to the reconnaissance program which might be considered, the types of data to be acquired, the interpretation of these data, and the generation of recommendations based on this interpretation. Where possible, some of those areas where computer technology is now used will be pointed out. The discussion will cover the extent to which the computer is now utilized in those areas or where it should be brought into the program to aid in these activities. However, this chapter will not present an exhaustive evaluation of this technology, but will stress the exploration job and its requirements, so that subsequent discussion of the technology itself can be placed in perspective.

MARTENSITE transformations in ß Cu-Al alloys have been studied by Greninger1 and other investigators. According to Greninger, the parent phase ß1 an ordered body-centered-cubic structure obtained from ß phase by suppressing the eutectoid decomposition, transforms into an ordered hexagonal-close-packed phase in composition containing 12.9 to 14.7 pct Al. The M, temperature decreases with increasing aluminum content; for the alloy containing 14.5 pct Al, for example, the ß1??' transformation occurs below room temperature. More recently, Kurjumow2 studied the transformation in ß Cu-Al alloys with the addition of nickel. His report stimulated new interest in the subject due to the observation of completely reversible transformation without hysteresis in the transformation temperature ranging from 10° to —10°C. In the present paper some characteristics are described of the transformation of Cu-Al-Ni alloys that were partly studied by Kurjumow. Experimental Procedure High purity copper (99.999 pct) and aluminum (99.99 pct) and electrolytic nickel were used in the preparation, by the Bridgman technique, of single crystal specimens which contained aluminum and nickel of 14.5 and 0.5 to 3.0 pct, respectively. Polished surfaces were prepared mechanically. Specimens were then chemically etched to remove distorted material, homogenized at 1000°C for several hours, and quenched drastically to room temperature in a 10 pct NaOH bath to produce the parent phase ß1. The transformation was studied under a microscope and, in some cases, recorded by means of motion pictures. A device similar to that designed by Greninger and Mooradian3 was used to cool and reheat the specimens. Results and Discussion When the specimens were cooled below room temperature, the ß1 to ?' transformation began at 10°C with the appearance of ?' crystals In relief, Fig. la. As the specimen temperature dropped further, the transformation continued, either by the growth of the ?' crystals, with the ß1 — ?' interface moving into the ß1 phase, Fig. 1c and 1d, or by the formation of new ?' crystals, Fig. 1b. As a consequence of the former process, banded structure is observed as a common feature of the low temperature phase. According to the theory of the formation of martensite by Wechsler, Lieberman, and Read,' the bands of ?' phase are probably twin-related, as is the case in the diffusionless phase change of In-T1 alloys,5 but this was not revealed by X-ray tech- niques. New ?' crystals, in needle form, often emerged suddenly across the ?' bands during the transformation. These acicular crystals then grew, both in length and in width, see Fig. 2a through 2d. The transformation on cooling is completed at about -35°C. Upon heating, the reverse transformation started at —10° C, in a manner nearly opposite to the transformation on cooling, and completed at 35°C. There was no noticeable change in the transformation temperature when the nickel content was varied within the limits previously mentioned. Through control of the specimen temperature, the transformation can be started, stopped, or reversed at will. This phenomenon has frequently been observed in the martensite transformation of many nonferrous alloy systems. Other systems are Au-Cd6 and In-Tl.5 ow-- ever, in the latter systems, the transformation is accomplished by single interface motion if the specimen composition is homogeneous and the temperature gradient in the specimen is uniform and sharp, whereas in the Cu-Al-Ni specimens, only multiple interface transformation is observed. The speed of the interface motion appears to be a functionof the rate of temperature change and the temperature gradient across the specimen length. In one case, in which the temperature increased at the rate of 10°C per min and there was no temperature gradient along the specimen axis, the speed of the disappearance of a ?' plate was determined, by the study of the motion pictures made, to be 26 µ per sec. Quench markings were observed on the polished surfaces of specimens. The markings were grouped into one or more sets of different orientations, and were parallel in each set. The ?' plates formed in subsequent transformation were parallel to the markings, indicating that the ?' plates and the quench markings had the same geometric relation-ship to the ß1 matrix. The quench markings on two intersecting surfaces of a specimen were therefore used in the determination of the habit plane of transformation, by the trace method suggested by Barrett.' Results obtained from five sets of markings in three specimens indicate that the habit plane is an irrational plane about 2" from one of the {221} planes. This is very close to the habit plane (3" from 221 planes) of ß Cu-Al alloys containing more than 13.0 pct Al.1 The martensite transformation of Cu-Al-Ni alloys is reproducible. No sluggishness was found between consecutive transformation cycles, although a slight difference in the distribution pattern of the ?' plates was observed, compare Figs. Id and 2d. The transformation can be strain-induced. This characteristic has been tested by a simple method. When a specimen was elastically strained slowly in a vise, ?' plates were gradually produced in the same fashion as during transformation on cooling, This test was done at room temperature, and thus above the M,
