SAN FRANCISCO Mines of Mexico, Ltd. owns and operates an extensive group of claims in the San Francisco del Oro-Santa Barbara district, about 15 miles southwest of Parral, Chihuahua. The property comprises the mines, aerial tramways, flotation mill, power plant, shops, offices, assay and testing laboratories, modern hospital, water and sanitary system, quarters for miners, mechanics and operators, a well housed colony for Mexican staff employees and residences for foreigners. Each colony has a club house and mess and tennis courts. The employees have constructed a nine-hole golf course. In other words, the property is self-contained and completely integrated for production of lead and zinc concentrates from complex sulfide ores.

THE United Verde mine is in the north central part of Arizona, on the northeasterly slope of the Black Hills, near the town of Jerome. Ore was first discovered in the district about 1875, and the first mining claims were located by M. A. Ruffner and associates in 1877. In 1888 the late Senator William A. Clark secured control of the property and under his ownership it developed into one of the country's most important copper producers. The property was sold to the Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1935, and since then has been under this Corporation's management. Except for shutdowns caused by general world-market conditions, production has been continuous from 189o to date. GEOLOGY The mineralized zone ranges in area from approximately 12 acres to less than 5 acres. All mineralization occurs in the pre-Cambrian intrusives. The first intrusion, according to geologic records, was the quartz porphyry, which later was intruded by augite diorite. Following the diorite intrusion through a series of intrusions of lesser magnitude, a pipelike mass of massive sulphide, quartz and rock was formed. The diorite forms the hanging wall of this mass, and the porphyry the footwall. Between the footwall and the sulphide a band of chlorite schist was formed, probably owing to metamorphic conditions. Commercial ore occurs along the contact of the schist and sulphide extending into the sulphide, sometimes entirely through the schist, and fingering out into the porphyry. The ore deposit was formed by replacement similar to deposits formed in limestone areas. Faulting and deformation occurred in pre-Cambrian times and again in the Tertiary period, removing approximately 2000 ft. from the top of the main United Verde ore body, forming the United Verde Extension ore body, the only other major ore body in the district. Major development work has shown that the sulphide mass extends to the 3300-ft. level, and diamond drilling below this level has indicated that the mass might extend below the 3700-ft. level, but in a diminished quantity. While many copper minerals exist in the mine, the chief commercial mineral is chalcopyrite. GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND PHYSICAL CONDITION OF MINE After over 50 years of active production, ore still exists on almost every level of the mine. This condition is due to many causes -mine fires, which broke out as early as 1894, caused the abandonment of certain areas; subsidence and ground movements retarded the cleaning up of others. Furthermore, in the early days there was such an abundance of ore that when mining became difficult it was a simple matter to replace the production by going to a deeper level. Diamonds occur in N.S.W., Victoria and north west Tasmania. Diamonds from different areas appear to have their own characteristics, lending weight to the suggestion that three or four different sources (different in location and age) have produced the diamonds found in alluvials at quite a number of locations in Eastern Australia. Explorers for kimberlites in Victoria must overcome a number of field difficulties. The writer's approach attempted to find exploration targets by literature search, noting unusual garnet occurrences, and by relating records of diamond occurrences to described mining activity. While the records are biased towards gold, the study did lead to a pipe, located well away from known diamond-bearing alluvials. Core from one test hole has shown this intrusive to include an alkaline ultramafic breccia with many kimberlitic affinities - a breccia containing mantle-derived minerals, but not a true kimberlite. (A detailed rock description is appended to this paper, but is not the purpose of the paper.) The Bureau of Mines has investigated podiform chromite deposits in three ultramafic bodies in the Caribou Mountain and lower Kanuti River areas of central Alaska. The investigation, reported in two parts, was done as part of the Bureau's mission to help insure an adequate supply of minerals to meet the Nation's needs. Part I describes an extensive field investigation and mineralogical studies by personnel from the Bureau's Alaska Field Operations Center. This report, part II, describes the mineralogy of 11 samples that were high-graded from surface exposures at 10 sites and presents the results of laboratory batch beneficiation tests designed to concentrate the chromite. The 11 samples, peridotites and chromitites that consisted of variable amounts of chromite or chromium-bearing spinets, olivine, and serpentine, were beneficiated by grinding and sizing, gravity concentration, and electrodynamic separation. Three high-chromium chromite concentrates, two high-iron chromite concentrates, and one high-aluminum chromite concentrate were produced. Three other concentrates were marginal, and two were submarginal. Chromium recoveries ranged from 54 to 92 pct. These results indicate that the areas may be significant chromium resources. Potential platinum association with the chromite was also investigated. Analysis of these 11 samples indicates that the areas are not good platinum resources.

THE behavior of tungsten and its surface oxides in oxidizing and reducing atmospheres and in high vacua at elevated temperatures is a question of considerable technical importance. The use of tungsten as a metal or as an important component in alloys in high temperature oxidizing atmospheres has been limited because of the unprotective nature of its oxide film and the volatility of its oxide. This paper will present results of a microbalance study1,2 of the following problems: (I) the oxidation behavior in the temperature range of 25 to 550°C (2) the reduction with pure hydrogen of thin oxide films formed on tungsten, and (3) the volatility of thin oxide films on tungsten. Tungsten is an interesting metal to study for the following reasons: (1) although the oxide to metal volume ratio is greater than one, the oxide is not considered protective, (2) the metal readily oxidizes at temperatures from 300° to 550°C (3) the oxides W02 and WO3 are reduced at temperatures as low as 500°C. by hydrogen, and (4) the oxide W02 is volatile at temperatures from 800 to 1100°C. LITERATURE The oxidation of tungsten in its thin film range has not been studied critically. In the thick film range Dunn3 has made the only systematic study. He found the oxidation rate to obey the parabolic rate law in the temperature range of 700 to 900°C. The temperature variation of the oxidation rate constant was found to follow an exponential law of the Arrhenius type. An inflection was noticed in the temperature plot of the rate law constant at 850 to 900°C. This was attributed to a phase change in the oxides. Scheil4 has studied the oxidation rate at 500 and 700°C over long periods of time and found a linear rate law. This result was interpreted as evidence for the presence of a nonprotective film. Pilling and Bedworth5 analyses of the oxide volume to metal volume ratio would indicate that a compact protective film should form. McAdam and Geil6 have studied the oxidation of tungsten in the thin film range using the interference color method. A parabolic rate law was found. Their curves showed that tungsten oxidizes faster than nickel but more slowly than iron. The lattice structures found in the oxidation of tungsten surfaces have been studied by Hickman and Gulbransen.7 They have reported that W03 is the stable oxide in contact with the metallic substrate up to approximately 600°C while W02 forms first at 700°C. Hägg and Magneli8 have recently reported a study of the lattice structures observed in the tungsten oxides using the X-ray diffraction method. "Western Canadian coking coals are located in the Rocky Mountains arid foothills of British Columbia and Alberta. They are typical of non-marine coals, characterized by total sulphur contents of less than one per cent and with ash contents of 10-30 weight per cent. This mineral matter is composed principally of kaolinite and quartz.The petrographic compositions of most of the coking coals which constitute the 2.065 billion tonnes of British Columbia's measured reserves, and the compositions of the metallurgical coal currently exported from Alberta, show them to be rich in the inertinite macerals, macrinite, fusinite and semifusinite. When the mean maximum reflectance of vitrinite in oil/Romax) is used as the coal rank parameter, this high inertinite content is reflected in the lower volatile-matter yields, but the relatively inert character is also displayed by lower free swelling indices (PSI), lower maximum dilatations, lower maximum fluidities and lower coke strengths than other coals of the same rank, but richer in the reactive macerals, vitrinite, exinite and semifusinite. Despite these reduced values in the so-called caking tests, inertinite-rich coals produce strong coke.A system of classification of coking coals is introduced which is based on rank, as indicated by Ro max, and either petrographic composition, maximum dilatation, maximum fluidity or, to a lesser extent, PSI and volatile-matter yield. Six principal coal groups can be distinguished among coking coals using this versatile classification. Inertinite-rich coals are assigned to the Keystone Group (GI), Balmer Group (G3) or Moura Group (G4), each group being named for a coal typical of that population ofcoals. Reactive-rich coals are assigned to the Pittston Group (G2), Kellerman Group (G5) or Big Ben Group (G6). A multiple-regression analysis of coal quality versus price shows how the value of coking coal in the Japanese market appears to be related to reflectance and the free swelling index, and confirms the economic viability of the classification.British Columbia's measured reserves of coking coal contain representatives of four of these groups; Balmer Group (73%), Moura Group (/6%), Pittston Group (3.4%) and Kellerman Group (7.6%).This analysis of the quality of Western Canadian coking coal indicates that despite the need for large proportions of inertinite-rich coking coal in blends produced in the Japanese steel industry, there is nevertheless a demonstrated overabundance of Balmer Group and Moura Group coals available to the international coking coal market."

With increasing traffic volumes experienced thro u g hout North America, a common goal for Highway officials is to keep traffic flowing as much as possible and to keep disruptions to the flow to a minimum. Our experience throughout the US and Canada has shown that all Departments of Transportation are under extreme pressure from the private sector to keep highways open for various reasons, convenience and revenue being the most common. For example, on Highway 99, from Vancouver, BC to the Whistler resort area, local merchants, homeowners and ski hill operators exert extreme pressure on the Ministry of Transportation to keep the highway open, and in Pennsylvania, the Turnpike Commission requires traffic to flow on a continual basis. Loss of revenue in these two cases is the main impetus to keep the traffic moving.

This paper applies geostatistical tools in Measure While Drilling (MWD)data to estimate the probability distribution of values in all the points of the studied domain in order to assess the continuity of rock classes between boreholes. The analyses carried out by Ghosh et al.(2018) and Navarro et al.(2019) have been used as starting point of this work to classify the geotechnical rock condition in four classes: solid rock, fractured rock, cave-in rock and cavity. From it, an application for the geotechnical rock condition of ore bodies have been developed, aiming at characterizing the rock before the charging the holes to minimize unexpected rock conditions and to address issues associated with charging and blasting operations. Such problems are closely related with non-optimal rock fragmentation after blasting. The procedure has been applied in the geotechnical block model results obtained from Navarro et al.(2019)’s work in the Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB’s (LKAB) Malmberget underground iron ore mine, Sweden. Navarro et al.(2019)’s model was developed based on102 fan-holes from five ore bodies and extrapolated to the full-scale in20 drifts with 5600 fan-holes from two orebodies. A multi-step transformation of the MWD parameters was carried out in order to minimize external influences other than the rock mass. The study shows the calculations of the variogram and kriging estimation in the 3D domain for six ring-blasts, from one of the ore bodies studied in Navarro et al. (2019)’s work to assess the continuity of the rock classes along the six ring-blasts in a 3D mapping model. For that, intermediate rings between the measured ones from the MWD have been estimated. The probability distribution of values in the entire domain of rings with measured samples has been plotted together with the rock classes identified by the blasthole paths. The results show high accuracy in the matching between the kriging and the values given by the MWD data, allowing to visualize smooth trends of different rock classes along the ring. The representation of the 3D mapping model for the six ring-blast shows clear fractured and cave-in zones developed along the drift that correspond to zones with geotechnical problems found, as from internal reports.

Originated from(C4H9O)4Ti, nano--rutile TiO2 was synthesized by low temperature hydrolysis process in this paper. After being prepared by decomposing ammonium tungstate and covering on the surface of TiO2, TiO2/WO3 were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction(XRD), UV--vis difuse reflectance(DRS), fluorescence spectrum (FS). Results showed that with the increase of the supported concentration of WO3, the reflectance of DRS and the fluorescence spectrum intensity of TiO2/WO3 decreased accordingly, which indicated the powder?s increase in light absorbance and the decrease in luminescence respectively; with the increase of calcined temperature, the reflectance of DRS increased.

The accumulation of paraffin deposits in tubular goods has been recognized as a major production problem since the inception of the petroleum industry. This problem is not limited to any particular geographical area nor is it limited to a specific type of crude oil.' Generally speaking, "paraffin" deposition pertains to the deposition of any predominately organic material in flow lines, and possibly even at the sand face, which would hamper the production of oil. In some fields, a continuous effort is required to remove deposits of paraffin and in order to accomplish this, many unique methods have been devised. The best solution to this problem, however, is to prevent the formation of such deposits. One method which has been tried in a number of fields is the use of plastic pipe. The purpose of this investigation is to compare the relative effectiveness of several plastic materials to aid in the reduction or prevention of paraffin accumulations in surface flow lines. COMPOSITlON OF PARAFFIN DEPOSITS By definition, paraffin deposits are those materials which are insoluble in crude oil at the prevailing producing conditions of temperature and pressure. Such deposits1 s usually consist of small particles of petroleum wax intermixed with resins, asphaltic material, and crude oil. They may also contain a variety of foreign materials such as sand, silt, water, various metal oxides, sulfates and carbonates of iron. barium, and calcium. The petroleum waxes deposited in flow strings usually consist of both a "hard" and a "soft" wax fraction. These waxes are largely aliphatic hydrocarbons with smaller amounts of aromatic and naphthenic compounds. Nathan' has classified the hard and soft wax fractions. The aliphatic hydrocarbons present are those of high molecular weight with high melting points. Reistle3 pointed out that these high molecular weight compounds first separate from the oil due to a sharp decrease in solubility as the melting point increases. The identification of the resins and asphaltic materials rests, at present, on an arbitrary solubility procedure. Under certain conditions, materials which are insoluble in pentane (ASTM D-893) are defined as resins and asphalts. Subgrouping of these materials is made on decreasing solubility in benzene and carbon disul-fide. Shock' found some correlation be-tween the solvent response and the pentane insoluble content of paraftins: higher pentane insoluble fractions are less soluble in any of the commonly used commercial solvents. PARAFFIN CONTROL METHODS The methods used in oil fields to prevent and remove paraffin accumulations can be grouped into four general classes: (1) operative methods, (2) physical methods, (3) chemical methods, and (4) combination of any of these. Operative methods attempt to prevent the formation of paraffin deposits while the other methods are concerned primarily with the removal of these deposits. Plastic coated pipe has been used for a number of years to prevent cor- rosion in wells, and in manv instances paraffin deposits have -been greatly reduced. Field observations have indicated that plastic coated pipe not only reduced paraffin accumulation but in some cases eliminated deposition completely; however, data are needed to demonstrate the relative effectiveness of plastic materials. Deposition Apparatus The pipe used to determine the effect of velocity on rates of deposition was %- and 2-in. nominal diameter, and 5 ft in length. Steel, butyrate, rigid PVC, kralastic resin-type plastic pipes, epoxy coated pipe, PVC lined glass fiber pipe, and aluminum pipe were tested. Steel pipe was used as a control. Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of the apparatus showing the relative position of the separate units making up the equipment. In order to facilitate the installation and removal of the test pipes in the apparatus, O-ring seals capable of sustaining pressures of 50 psi were provided at each end. Test pipes were submerged in a cold water bath maintained at or below room temperature by circulating water through copper cooling coils packed in ice. A hot water bath equipped with immersion-type heaters, stirrers, and a thermoregulator was used to maintain the temperature of the oil prior to introduction into the piping manifold. The capacity of the oil reservoir was 30 gal. A 33-gal/min centrifugal pump, capable of producing turbulent flow velocities in the test pipes, was used to circulate the oil through the system when using %-in. pipe; and a 70-galjmin centrifugal pump was used in later tests using 2-in. pipe. At the meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, G. S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, announced the definition of a gassy mine. This definition has been awaited with much interest, especially by the Safety Committee of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute. It applies to the whole area of all mines, any part of which is on the public domain of the United States. Consequently it will be of wide application in the western part of this country. The safety committee of the R. M. C. M. I. has been hopeful that the Institute would adopt this definition without exception as the codes of rules to be recommended at all mines in the Rocky Mountain area. The statement follows: "The U. S. Bureau of Mines believes that all coal mines are potentially gassy; but for purposes of administration in respect to prevention of explosions and fires, the Bureau recommends the following classification: "Class 1 coal mine-A practically non-gassy mine in which flammable gas in excess of 0.05 per cent cannot be found by systematic search. "Class 2. coal mine-A slightly gassy mine in which (a) flammable gas has been found, ? but in quantity less than two per cent in still air in any active or unsealed-abandoned workings; or (b) flammable gas can be found, but in quantity less than four per cent, in some place from which the ventilating current has been shut off for a period of one hour; or (c) flammable gas can be found,* but in quantity less than one-fourth per cent in a split** of the ventilating current; or (d) flamamble gas is found in quantity greater than' specified rate*** of not more than 25 cu. ft. per minute. "Class 3 coal mine- A gassy mine in which flammable gas is found in quantity greater than specified for a Class 22 coal mine. GENERAL NOTES REGARDING DECISION NO. 3 "(A) Flammable gas found in coal mines is, with rare exceptions, methane. In coal-mining fields where natural gas is found in lower geologic horizons by deep wells which pass through or nearby the coal mines, there have been rare instances of la leakage from the well. Natural gas is chiefly methane; that constituent almost always forms more than 85 per cent of the whole, but it usually contains ethane, propane and traces of butane also. Therefore if the latter gases are found in mine air it is an indication of leakage. The lower limit of explosibility of methane-air mixture when there is turbulence of five per cent and of natural-gas-air mixtures with about ten per cent ethane and associated hydro-carbon gases is 4.6 per cent. The limit therefore varies with the character of the mixture. " (B) To determine the proper classification of a coal mine, it is advisable that systematic testing and sampling be done at least three times in a period of not less than 72 hours. All tests and samples of the mine air, except one, must show an inflammable-gas content less than the maximum limit of the class to which the mine is assigned. In other words, a tolerance of one test or analysis may be permitted to provide for a mistake or a very exceptional occurrence. "(C) When a new mine is being opened in a coal field where existing mines are generally gassy, it is common sense to assume that similar conditions will be found in the new mine, and its development and equipment should be based upon the expectation that it will be assigned to Class 3."

Filter Presses are used in a wide range of process industries where high quality filtration at elevated pressure is required. This is mainly due to the fact that modern presses are fitted with polypropylene filter plates which combine excellent corrosion resistance with high mechanical strength. Filtration pressures of 15 Bar at ambient temperatures are common ensuring low residual moisture content and easily manageable filter cakes. Recessed polypropylene chamber plates have been in use for the last 15-20 years and have replaced plates and frames almost entirely. The latest development in plate technology is the polypropylene membrane plate. These provide lower moisture content cakes at significantly higher capacity than recessed chamber plates. Because of their stayboss-free construction, membrane plates provide excellent cake washing facilities which make them suitable for a wide range of process applications. Membrane plates are available both as fixed and exchangeable membrane types. Overhung membranes can be fitted to existing plates manufactured in cast iron or plastic to enhance the performance of existing presses.

Described is the application of high- intensity magnetic separation throughout the spectrum of industrial minerals. Performed either wet or dry, the separation has application in both the recovery and concentration of value minerals and in removing deleterious mineral constituents. The various types of magnetic separators along with the design and operating parameters relative to separation response are characterized. The characteristics of specific minerals to magnetic collection and the production of high-grade concentrates are described. Laboratory, pilot-scale, and plant studies carried out on a variety of industrial minerals have demonstrated the effectiveness of magnetic separation as either a primary or a secondary unit operation to achieve product quality.

Laboratory and field scale kinetic testing was conducted to evaluate scaling up of laboratory data. Two 20- tonne (field) cells were monitored for internal temperature, pH, conductivity, volume and rate of flow, and water quality. On a surface are. basis, results showed sulfide oxidation rates obtained using 50-kg cells are more sensitive to changes in aeration than those from 1-kg cells. Correcting the laboratory oxidation rates for field temperatures with a pH 7 activation energy, which is in the field drainage pH range, returned oxidation rates an order of magnitude lower than the field cell rates.

To those familiar with ore-dressing practice, it is hardly necessary to dwell upon the importance of the jig. Within its proper sphere no substitute has been found that does the work as well or as cheaply. Its capacity is large, it requires but little attention, and the losses are small. In one form or another, it is the principal machine used in the concentration of low-grade ores, and for the separation of one metallic mineral from another; and it is almost the only machine used for the purification of coal. The present paper is a study of the action of the jig in the light of results obtained in the Lake Superior copper mills, ad at the St. Joseph Lead Co.'s dressing-works, in Missouri; and a description of experiments undertaken with the view of reproducing and isolating the conditions of jigging, in order to develop the laws which underlie the process. IT has long been supposed that when crystalline materials are com-minuted the energy used in the production of increasingly smaller grain sizes is not entirely dissipated as heat but that a certain portion is "stored" as a part of the internal energy of the material. This portion usually has been called the "surface energy" of the particles. The practical interest of the Bureau of Mines in this subject in connection with the energy requirements of crushing processes has led to the author's attempt to measure the "stored" energy in finely divided calcite by heat-of-solution methods1. The experiments on calcite showed that "storage" of energy could not be proved for this material, because fine grinding caused a lack of chem-ical homogeneity evidenced by loss of carbon dioxide and subsequent adsorption of water on the surfaces of the calcite particles. When thermochemical correction was made for composition changes the cor-rected heat of solution was less for fine material than for coarse. Con-tinuation of the experimental work into the problem of comparing work and heat in the deformation of metallic crystals, where the calorimetric difficulties were less, showed, however, that in the case of copper and aluminum a real discrepancy between work and heat could be shown. similar results had previously been obtained by Farren and Taylor2 and Hort3 and more or less simultaneously with the author's work by

In low carbon TRIP steels, the formation of carbide-free bainitic ferrite is crucial for the stabilization of austenite. Based on experimental investigations modeling the bainite reaction is examined adopting diffusional and displacive mechanisms, as well as the semi-empirical JMAK approach. Transformation tests were carried out to study the isothermal austenite decomposition into bainitic ferrite for a model steel containing 0.6wt%C, 1.5wt%Mm and 1.5wt%Si which replicates the composition of remaining austenite at the start of the bainite reaction in a classical C-Mn-Si TRIP steel. In the diffusional approach, classical nucleation theory is employed and subsequent growth of bainite plates is modeled using the Zener-Hillert theory. In the displacive approach, the autocatalytic nucleation of bairtite plates is assumed to be rate controlling. The predictive capability of all models is evaluated for temperature ranges where different morphologies of bainitic ferrite have been detected, The shortcomings and inherent challenges associated with either of these modeling approaches will be delineated.

An automated method, which is believed to be the fastest in the world and which can be used by mineralogically-untrained technical assistants, has been developed for the rapid location of native gold particles and other gold minerals down to 1 pm in size in ores, concentrates, and tailings using a scanning electron microscope. Searching of a 25 mm diameter polished block in 1 pm steps usually requires 3-4 h. Examples of the location of native gold and gold tellurides in drill core sections, in crushed ore samples and gravity and flotation concentrates, and in various metallurgical test products are given. The results have application in ore exploration, in guiding metallurgical test programmes, and in assessing metallurgical per- formance in testwork and in operating plants.
