"Railroad locomotives produce heat, gas, and smoke, which cause considerable discomfort to engine men and firemen while passing through tunnels. In order to try and improve these conditions, the Bureau of Mines has investigated the composition of atmospheres in cabs of freight locomotives while in tunnels; and some of the higher temperatures in the cabs were noted; physiological effects upon men were determined and gas masks and respirators were devised to eliminate the effects of irritating and poisonous gases and smoke. Those investigations were conducted in tunnels of the Baltimore & Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Union Pacific railroads; while that described in this paper was carried out in tunnels of the Chesapeake & Ohio, Railroad, situated in the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains in Virginia and West Virginia, Freight locomotives used by this railroad are of the Mallet type, which have two separate cylinders: and two separate sets of driving wheels on each side. In locomotive language they are of the 2-6-6-2 type. All of the cylinders act as simple engines when starting or in slow, heavy hauling; but at faster speeds the pair of cylinders on each side operate compound, Mallet locomotives are the largest and most powerful now operated.The tendency in train operation has always been to increase the burden upon locomotives, Present traffic needs frequently load even the Mallet engine to capacity, and yet the weight of trains tends to increase. It has been suggested as a means of securing greater power units that Mallets be constructed to operate only as simple engines. This would increase the amount of steam given off as the amount of coal burned and the resulting volume of flue gas emitted."

The process of sand erosion has been harnessed to perform a useful function—the directed perforating of oilfield tubular goods and formation rock. In this process the sand is carried by a liquid medium and the resrrlting slurry is forced through a nozzle at an extren~ely high velocity. Upon impingement against casing or formation, the fast-moving sand particles erode a perforalion in the casing followed by cavity formation in the medium behind the casing. The many factors influencing the rate and extent of this penetration are inherently difficult to establish experimentally. Equations describing submerged jet behavior have been applied to these conditions. The following paper develops the equations for predicting the performance of the perforating jet. INTRODUCTION The cutting power of high-velocity sand has been well known in the petroleum industry for many years. Sand carried by a high-velocity gas stream causes severe erosion. This effect has been the cause of numerous production problems in certain areas. It was logical to expect that this phenomenon would one day be adapted to useful industrial applications. Development of mobile, high-pressure, high-horsepower pumping equipment in the last decade has made this possible. The sand erosion process involves pumping a fluid containing abrasive solids through a set of nozzles at a high differential pressure (2,000 to 4,000 psi). The pressure conversion into kinetic energy imparts high velocity to the sand particles which, upon impact with the formation face or casing wall, erode the material in an organized pattern. This paper attempts to establish the effects of the various parameters and to predict the performance and limitations of the process. The following factors will be considered: nozzle differential pressure, perforation size, sand concentration, nozzle stand-off distance and backpressure. In general, this discussion is presented along theoretical lines and is substantiated by field results and data where reliable field data exists. POWER EQUATIONS The penetration rate of a high-velocity hydraulic jet is proportional to the power or energy of the jet at the point in quesion. The power of the submerged jet will decrease with distance (or penetration) into the cavity created by the jet. As the cavity is extended into the formation, the power of the jet diminishes to a value equal to the threshold cutting power of the particular formation which is defiined as the lowest power level at which the formation will be abraded by the jet. Obviously, when this point is reached, no further cutting of the formation can occur. It is assumed that this power level for a particular formation is a function of the hardness of that formation. The following equation can be written for the hydraulic process of formation abrasion.

This symposium is dedicated to the lifetime achievements of Professor H.Y. Sohn. It covers the scientific fields, processing routes and investigation techniques in which Prof. Sohn has worked during his career and is based in the equally important three topical areas: Principles, Technologies, and Industrial practice. Professor Sohn was General Chair of the very first TMS Fall Extraction and Processing Symposium in 1983 in San Francisco which led to the Annual such symposia as this International symposium. Furthermore, the theme of that symposium was sulfide smelting, which is also included in this symposium. [ ] Professor Sohn was born in a beautiful dynastic capital Kaesung, Korea on August 21, 1941. He received his B.S. degree in 1962 from Seoul National University, M.Sc. in 1966 from the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, N.B., Canada, and his Ph.D. degree in 1970 from theUniversity of California at Berkeley all in Chemical Engineering. After working as a Research Associate at the State University of New York at Buffalo and as a Research Engineer at Du Pont?s Engineering Technology Laboratory, Dr. Sohn joined the Department of Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Utah in 1974 and currently holds the ranks of Professor of Metallurgical Engineering and Adjunct Professor of Chemical Engineering.

The object of this work was to obtain and correlate information on effect of internal stress in variously drawn tubes on several properties. Also, a simple approximate method of comparing types of stress distribution in such variously drawn tubes was sought. There is also included some work on comparison of single and polycrystalline materials and effect of different types of operation and preferred orientation. Preparation of Material A series of tubes was drawn to study the effect of the type and degree of final reduction on various physical properties and the approximate distribution of stress intensity across the tube wall. The material used all came from a single heat of 70-30 brass melted in a regular production Ajax-Wyatt induction furnace. The analysis of the metal as cast was: copper, 70.36 per cent; lead, 0.04; iron, 0.02; zinc, balance. The material was cast in "shells" with 4 in. outside diameter and in. wall thickness. It was drawn part way down according to the usual standard mill schedule and then by suitable individual schedules to finish by a variety of types and degrees of drawing to the same final cases in every instance; namely, 0.750 in. outside diameter by 0.080 in. wall thickness. The exact final draws, together with the percentage area reductions, diameter reductions and gage reductions are given in Table 1. In fabricating these tubes, rather unusual precautions were observed to insure the elimination of ail variables not under immediate study. All intermediate anneals were carried out at about 1200" F. down to the so-called "cut-in size"; namely, 17/16 by 3/16 in. From this point on, all anneals were made at from 1050' to 1100" F. The greatest care was used all through to have the tubes as free from minor surface defects as possible. When such defects were visible on intermediate sizes they were carefully filed out. On the final draw to 3/4-in diameter the die was aligned with the greatest possible precision in order to insure as straight a tube as possible

Discussion of the paper of Archer E. Wheeler and Milo W. Krejci, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 1831 to 1880. BRADLEY STOUGHTON, New York, N. Y.:-I would like to ask Mr. Krejci whether they have tried mixing coke dust with the lime in those converters and, if so, if any advantage has been found. It has been a very great advantage in the steel converters where coke dust has been mixed with the lime near the tuyeres. Of course the agent that causes the corrosion at that point is oxide of iron, and coke seems to prevent the formation of the oxide of iron and so protect the tuyeres. It would be interesting to know if it had the same effect in the copper converters. MILO W. KREJCI:-We have never tried it here. At Anaconda the tuyere section was formerly put in by mixing magnesite with tar and ramming that into the tuyere section, but they have abandoned that. Might I ask how you would apply the coke dust? How get it into the tuyere section ? How hold it there ? BRADLEY STOUGHTON :-The coke dust is mixed with silica and clay and then rammed in and burned. I suppose in your converters it would be mixed with the magnetite or magnesite and then agglomerated with the material in place. MILO W. KREJCI:-We never tried it here. PROF. JOSEPH W. RICHARDS, South Bethlehem, Pa.:-I would like to ask how thick this deposit of magnetite is on the lining. How thick a layer would be practical ? MILO W. KREJCI:-About 21 in. would be sufficient. SOLOMON LE FEVRE, Mineville, N. Y.:-I was interested to hear of the use of magnetite in connection with the copper smelter. I am interested in the mining of magnetite, but was not aware that it had been used at all' by the copper metallurgists.

Smelting using the direct-to-blister process commenced at Olympic Dam on 31 July 1988. The unique nature of the Olympic Dam ore body led to the selection of the direct to blister smelting process. Significant improvement in the design of the furnace and the understanding of the fundamentals of the process and its operation has occurred in the 10 years of operation. The paper will discuss the operation of the #1 Smelter and the design, preparation for start up and early operating experience of the #2 Smelter.

This: symposium was sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the lnterior, in order to critically examine the state-of-the-art of sulfide flotation chemistry and to define current and emerging problems that should be emphasized in future fundamental research. The topics covered through invited papers include both reviews and recent research results in the areas of thermodynamics of reagent-mineral interactions; collector adsorption processes; the effects of solid-state point defects on flotation; activation and deactivation phenomena; the electrochemical role of oxygen in sulfide flotation; environmental problems in flotation; and selective flocculation of fines. Papers riving perspectives on flotation research in relationship to our national mineral requirements and the relationships between industrial flotation research and academics are also presented. An edited summary of the symposium follows the papers.

Gold miners have been underperforming the price of gold for a number of years. So why has the æmarketÆ undervalued our gold miners relative to what they have been mining? The low valuation ascribed to gold mining companies is largely attributable to their profit performance. In the period since 2006 the price of gold in A$ has risen about $900/oz, but the real cash margin (operating cash costs + cost of finding and/or acquiring deposits + the cost of bringing them into production) has only risen about A$100. Rising operating costs are a major part of this reduction in real margin. Energy and labour costs have risen more than the inflation rates across a number of countries as have taxes, royalties, etc. There are however, more significant contributors to the rising cost base. Firstly, in 2006 the average gold grade was 2.0 g/t; today it is 1.3 g/t. Secondly, strip ratios (for surface mines) have increased by 19 per cent during this time. Open cut mining equipment unit output across the world has dropped by 26 per cent during 2006 - 2012. Finally, costs have risen by 55 per cent during this time period. Consequently, there is now 3.8 times more mining cost required to produce an ounce of gold from surface mines compared with 2006. The decline in gold grade looks to be a permanent trend as does increasing strip ratio if output is to be maintained. Costs will continue to rise although cost control will be necessary. Reversing the decline in equipment performance and closing the gap between median and best practice provides the hope for a sustainable reversal of cost increases. The current gap between best practice and median performance has grown to 112 per cent for mining trucks, 168 per cent for excavators and 169 per cent for front end loaders. Closing this gap is the potential for a more profitable future. For most gold mining companies improving mining efficiency is not an option; it is an imperative.CITATION:Lumley, G, 2013. The permeability and flow capacity in unsaturated media is investigated by the Bureau of Mines for application to in situ copper leach mining at the Cyprus Casa Grande mine site. Moisture retention properties are derived and combined with scanning electron microprobe data to characterize the mineralogy, texture, pore size, distribution, and permeability of the host rock. Finite element modeling is used to derive a saturated permeability, ambient degree of saturation, and assess various injection-recovery schemes. Recommended design modifications for optimization of solution distribution and maximum recovery from the rock matrix requires either (1) the injection pressures on the order of 1500 psi and recovery wells operating in a suction mode, or (2) performing permeability enhancement, through rubblization. By producing a maximum block diameter of 4 m, injection pressures can be reduced to 500 psi with improved recovery and containment of solutions.

Ashton Mining Limited is currently one of the active companies undertaking gold exploration in Indonesia. Presently 7 Contract of Work areas are being explored for hard rock and alluvial gold. Hard rock exploration is focussed on the Tertiary volcanic arc terrains in which a variety of epithermal mineralisation styles have been identified. At the regional stage remote sensing techniques using Landsat, Spot and SLAR imagery where available, and photogeological studies are carried out in parallel with regional reconnaissance fieldwork programmes. These involve geological mapping and geochemical drainage sampling. Remote sensing techniques have proven useful in both the extrapolation of known geology and the identification of tectonically favourable settings as controls to mineralisation and volcanicity. The variety of mineralisation styles and settings is reflected in the highly variable geochemical signatures encountered. This has necessitated the refinement of sampling methods and sample preparation techniques for pan concentrate, stream sediment and soil samples in specific project areas. At the detailed prospect stage, mapping with particular attention to structural controls, wallrock alteration assemblages identified by petrog- raphy and XRD clay mineralogy, have proved useful in focussing drill targets. Drilling to date has utilised conventional diamond core drilling methods, the use of lightweight, man-portable "Winkie"-type rigs and hammer auger bedrock sampling systems. Geophysics methods successfully employed on various projects have included airborne magnetics and radiometrics, detailed ground magnetic surveys, VLF-EM and SIROTEM.

THE copper mines of the Katanga region in the Belgian Congo lie along the same mineralized belt as those of Northern Rhodesia. There are two distinct types of deposits in that belt, the dolomitic and the quartzitic. In the dolomitic type the metallic minerals are found in a dolomitic limestone country rock. Through oxidation and enrichment, large deposits of high-grade oxidized copper ores were formed, some of which are being worked by the Union Miniere du Haut Katanga. Such deposits are all in Katanga. The quartzitic deposits are found in Katanga and Northern Rhodesia. Here the primary mineralization occurred in sandstones and quartzites, in horizons stratigraphically lower than the dolomites. These rocks are not favorable to secondary enrichment and the oxidized zone is poorer than the sulphide zone, which alone contains the ore. There are also in Katanga a few ore-bearing veins. One of them is being worked in the Prince Leopold mine at Kipushi.

Peretti (University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Ind.)—Mr. Deitz and Professor Halpern are to be congratulated on a fine piece of work which adds to our knowledge of precious metal—cyanide-solution reactions. I should like to offer the following comments: The authors state, "the rate plots were always linear, indicating a zero order reaction rate." This appears to conflict with the data of Fig. 6 which clearly show the rate to vary with the NaCN concentration. It seems to me that the rate curves are linear because of the experimental setup. The volume of solution is so large that over a three-hour period the change in NaCN concentration is very small. A rough calculation for the experiments of Table I where the initial NaCN strength was 0.0096 mol per liter show a change of NaCN concentration of about 0.0009 mol per liter at the end of three hours. In short, over the period of time that the experiment was in progress, the NaCN strength was practically constant; hence the rate of dissolution remained practically constant. Eq. 10, as written, specifies that 1 mol of H202 and 2 mol of hydroxyl ion are formed when 2 mol of silver react. Is this true? The effect of H,O2 on the rate was made in solutions having an oxygen pressure of 4.8 atm. Were any tests made in solutions containing hydrogen peroxide, but no oxygen? G. M. Willis (University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia)—The authors have shown that, under their experimental conditions of high O2 concentrations, the rate of solution of silver in aqueous cyanide solutions is controlled by diffusion of O2 or CN- to the metal surface. With diffusion control, it is generally not possible to obtain further information about the mechanism of a process.

A new experimental procedure for determining the solids flux curve is detailed. The procedure is based on measuring the concentration at various heights of a bed of settled solids formed during a semi-continuous sedimentation test. Unlike conventional thickener area calculations, the test procedure demonstrates the dependence of the flux curve on the system feed flux. At a given feed flux, there was good agreement between the solids flux curve determined by the method and continuous sedimentation results. The widely used method of Kynch was found to be restricted to relatively high effective feed fluxes and consequently there was poor agreement with continuous tests at low feed fluxes. The flux curve determined by the method of Coe and Clevenger was invalid for all feed fluxes. A case study shows how the required thickener area would vary for a number of fine coal processing options.

Iv 1897, Roberts-Austen(l)$ found an arrest in the thermal curves of alloys of 60 per cent. copper and 40 per cent. zinc. This break occurred from 450° to 470° C. Shepherd, (2) working in 1904, was unable to detect any change in the direction of the thermal curve. In 1911, Carpenter and Edwards(3) confirmed the work of Roberts-Austen and called this a eutectoid transformation of beta to alpha plus gamma. Hudson') in 1914, showed that the beta constituent could be produced synthetically at temperatures below the transformation point. He believed the change in the beta was polymorphic in nature rather than a eutectoid. The work of Matsuda(32) in 1922 demonstrated this break by thermal analysis, microscopic investigations, dilatation, electrical resistance measurements, and a thermoelectric study. He believed the transformation to be continuous from 300° to 480° C., and comparable to the A 2 transformation in iron. Later, in 1924, Andrew and Hay, with electrical resistance measurements, confirmed Matsuda's work. Imai(28) showed the transformation to be progressive and therefore a function of the temperature rather than the time. He stated that it was neither a eutectoid nor an allotropic change of phase. Atomistically expressed, it was a change, not of atomic configuration, but of atomic energy of some kind; and again it was compared to the A 2 transformation in iron. Imai believed that his analyses by X-rays led to the same conclusion. In order to study this change, at 470'C., in homogeneous 60:40 brass, Homerberg and Williams «0> and Homerberg and Shaw(41) quenched their material in iced brine to obtain the beta solid solution and reheated at various temperatures. At 200° C., a change in the microstructure and physical properties occurred. A fine-grained structure, which they termed alpha and which had the appearance of a sorbitic steel, appeared, with an increase in the tensile strength to 82,750 lb. per sq. in., and a Brinell ball hardness of 240 with 3000 kg. load. While convergence of plates at a subduction zone produces shortening at the toe of the overriding plate, this deformation is localized to the frontal 100 km or so of the plate. There is increasing evidence that the state of strain in back-arcs, volcanic arcs, and possibly the entire forearc is extensional. The most likely cause of this extension is rollback of the subducting plate and trenchward advance of the overriding plate. Arcs are thermally weakened, and are activated repeatedly through time. The primary expression of the extensional state of strain is spreading of the weak arc material, either by splitting the arc or by back-arc spreading behind it. The Bureau of Mines has calculated general time-dependent solutions for radon diffusion from cylindrical and slab rock samples containing uniform radium distribution. Results have been obtained for several sets of boundary conditions. The method is suitable for determining the effective diffusion coefficient and the effective porosity for radon.

The Far Fanning gold deposit is situated 60 kilometres south-west of Townsville (Fig. 1). Previous recorded production is 3756 tonnes returning about 1600 ounces of gold. This has been taken from surface and shallow underground workings- scattered over the strike length of the deposit of 1700 metres. The main production period was from 1895 to 1908.Previous exploration involving extensive trenching and sampling has been: carried out intermittently. since the 1930's, by Gold Mines of Australia (1932), Placer (1974), Anaconda (1975), Marathon (1980-8-1), Aberfoyle (1981-82), and The Northern Queensland Company (NQC) (1983-present).In 1980 Marathon undertook an extensive drilling programme to test the oxidised mineralisation. Over 200 percussion holes and- 7 diamond holes were drilled along traverse lines spaced 29 to 103 metres apart covering a strike length of around 1800 metres.

I read Professor Gaudin&apos;s paper with great interest and pleasure because for some time I have held that the chemical aspect of comminution is a subject of considerable importance to the mineral dresser and deserves to be thoroughly investigated. It does seem appropriate, however, to emphasize the fact that "fresh" edges and corners produced by the grinding of solids display enhanced reactivity has been recognized and utilized in the development of certain mineral identification techniques. Some of these techniques are worth noting, not only because they might facilitate research in the aspect of mineral dressing under discussion, but also because they emphasize the fact that many mineral species commonly regarded as being very inert can display a surprising reactivity when in the freshly ground state. In 1951 Isakov6 published a number of tests for the components of certain mineral species which depend essentially on grinding in a mortar a mixture of the material under investigation with a solid reagent. Thus when stibnite, 4(Sb2S3), is ground with sodium or potassium hydroxide. the antimony is revealed by a momentary development of a yellow color which changes in air to orange-red. Other antimony minerals need a preliminary treatment before the test can be carried out. This consists of grinding with aluminium sulfate, ferric sulfate or potassium bisulfate, and breathing upon the resultant mixture. I have employed a similar technique to determine the approximate magnesia content of certain limestones.&apos; The method depends essentially on the fact that when a sample of limestone is ground under controlled conditions with solutions of sodium hydroxide and Titan yellow the color of the final product is, within limits, a function of the amount of magnesia present. I have also shown that the components of a wide range of minerals can be identified by applying chemicals to their streaks on portions of vitrified, unglazed floor tiles, etc. Under such circumstances the diversity of the reactions which take place in the cold (because of the reactivity of fresh corners and edges) is surprising. Thus, for example, if a garnierite, (Ni,Mg)3Si2O5(OH)1, streak is treated first with a drop of 0.880 ammonia and then with a drop of a 1 pct alcoholic dimethyl-glyoxime it immediately becomes red, indicating the presence of nickel.&apos; Stevens and Carron9 have evolved a simple field test for distinguishing minerals by "abrasion pH." A soft nonabsorbent mineral is scratched in a drop of water on a streak plate until a milky suspension is formed. A piece of pH indicator paper is dipped into the suspension, after which it is removed and the maximum deviation from neutrality noted. When a hard mineral or one which absorbs water is being tested, fragments are first ground for 1 min with a few drops of water in a mortar to make a heavy suspension. The importance of the findings of such tests to mineral dressing may be judged by the abrasion pH values, Table 11, recorded by Stevens and Carron for certain species usually regarded as comparatively inert. The combined results Of the above researches clearly indicate that comminution is capable of altering the pH of a pulp and of causing the chemical nature of the surfaces of some of the components to be profoundly changed&apos; Depending On circumstances such surface alterations may have a beneficial or an adverse effect if these products are subsequently subjected to flotation. The tests also suggest that by grinding "inert" minerals with appropriate solid or liquid reagents "reactive" surfaces may be developed which might facilitate separations by flotation. It is an interesting and instructive problem to determine the reactions that are likely to take place when dry solid substances are subjected to comminution and to the unavoidable heat liberated during the process. To do this it is theoretically necessary to know the free energy values of the reactants and possible resultants, but unfortunately there is a dearth of such data! However, the heats of formation of many substances are known, and generally speaking, if in a reaction of the type AB + CD = AD + CB the sum of the heats of formation of AB and CD is less than that of AD and CB the reaction will probably proceed to the right. Thus, according to a note I have (the author of which I cannot name) if PbS (black) is warmed with CdSO, (white), PbSO., (white) and CdS (yellow) are formed, and that the reaction does, in fact, take place is indicated by the change in color of the mixture. The reaction is expected, as the sum of the heats of formation of PbS and CdSO, is less than that of PbSO, and CdS (as shown below). PbS + CdSO4 = PbSO4 + CdS 22.2 + 218.0 < 216.2 + 33.9 Finally, certain other aspects of the chemistry of comminution, which are neither mentioned by Professor Gaudin nor referred to by me are to be found in a paper by Welsh" and in the printed discussion thereof. A. M. Gaudin (author&apos;s reply)—The observations contributed by Dr. Hosking are indeed welcome, as they add to our experimental knowledge of a topic which is believed to be of the first importance. In connection with the experiments cited it should be kept in mind that oxidation, hydration, and carbonation at various rates should always be deemed to be possibilities when grinding is done in water or in air, even in "industrially dry" air. Special precautions might lead to sufficient minimizing of these reactions and to the assertion, instead, of deliberately-created reactions. Information about geostructure for effective rock bolting must be obtained before setting the bolt into rock in a coal mine roadway. Especially, rock type variation and distribution of discontinuities such as layer boundaries, and separation of strata and cracks all represent indispensable knowledge. To achieve in-situ evaluation of roof rock, we developed an MWD (measurement while drilling) system using mechanical data from a drilling machine for rockbolt. System hardware detects torque, thrust, revolution, and stroke of the machine, and software analyzes the mechanical data log and displays locations of discontinuities using Neural Network techniques. Also, this system is able to estimate roof rock 3-D geostructure for varied rock types and discontinuity distribution in cases of a drill hole array arrangement in roof rock. We conducted a feasibility study for it using hydraulic drilling at roadways of the Taiheiyo Coal Mine, Japan. Simultaneously, some core drillings were also performed to confirm system analysis data. For core samples, distribution of cracks was observed and the borehole wall was investigated by OFS (optical fiber scope). Must discontinuity locations estimated from roof logging were conformed with data obtained from core inspection. However, the core sample contained a number of cracks which were not found in the mechanical data log. This indicates that additional cracks were generated during and/or after core drilling by the influence of rotational force of the machine and water supply. Furthermore, in comparison with the OFS image, resolution of the discontinuity&apos;s log estimated by this system was clarified; that is, it is difficult to detect small size cracks (hairline cracks) from a mechanical data log and the core inspection by OFS. This paper outlines the new hardware system for hydraulic drilling machine and compares the discontinuity map obtained from the software system with drilling core inspection.
