The $2 billion (A$) Melbourne City Link Project is one of the largest and most important metropolitan road developments ever undertaken in Australia. The project involves two three-lane vehicular tunnels totaling 5 km, constructed as deep as 65 m underground. The 3.4 km Burnley tunnel is one of the world's longest three-lane tunnels. The project is being delivered under a DBOOT [design-build-own-operate-transfer] process and all design and construction is performed to ISO 9000 standards. Tunnel excavation began in May 1996, and the tunnel will open to traffic in 1999. This paper focuses on the range of construction techniques utilized during construction.

The Tooele plant of the Internationa1 Smelting & Refining Co. is situated at the mouth of Pine canyon, Tooele county, Utah. It is connected with the main line of the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroad by the Tooele Valley railway, and is about 7 miles from Tooele Junction. Fig. 1 is a general view of the plant. The copper plant has been in operation since July, 1910, arid the first blast furnace at the lead plant was blown in on Feb. 29, 1912. The location of the plant was selected on sloping ground with the idea of using gravity to the fullest extent and thus keeping labor at a minimum. "Copper sulfide concentrates often contain impurities such as lead and iron. The phase stabilities of the sulfide impurity systems in metallurgical process conditions are in many cases unsatisfactorily known. Thermodynamic information of a system gives better understanding of its behavior of metal making processes, but also has effects on the economic and environmental factors of the production process. In this study, isothermal equilibrium and quenching experiments of the stable phases of the system Cu2S-FeS-PbS at 700 and 900 °C were carried out and based on the experimental results, Gibbs triangle of equilibrium phases of the system was outlined.IntroductionThe knowledge of stabilities of phases and the thermodynamic properties of many sulfide systems in the temperature range of 500-1200 °C are quite limited. Especially, the knowledge of liquidus surfaces of multicomponent sulfide systems is essential for making many metallurgical processes more environmental friendly and allowing the utilization of complex concentrates. In this work, the aim was to investigate the phase stabilities of the quasiternary system CU2SFeS- PbS using evacuated silica ampoules. Of greatest interest were the properties of the liquidus surface in the system, in order to be able to predict better the formation of a liquid phase in metallurgical processes."

Carbonate-hosted massive sulfide ores of the American cordillera compose a distinctive genetic class. Discordant fea-tures of occurrence together with measured high-temperatures of formation indicate their essential epigenetic character and close spatial association with centers of thermal activity during evolution of the cordillera. Their metallogenic character is complex from region to region: Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag, Pb-Zn-Ag, and Cu-Zn-Ag-Au represent extremes of composition and each may be identified with specific terranes of occurrence, notwithstand-ing an inferred common process of formation. Beyond the presence of a thermal center, other controls that may be identi-fied include apparent but obscure properties of primary perme-ability or chemistry of hosting strata, and secondary controls are imposed by stratigraphic differences in which permeability is strongly contrasted. Structures that act as channelways may be identified in some instances. Notwithstanding their intrinsic value, search for these ores is difficult and requires the solution of complex geochemical and three-dimensional geometric problems.

KNAPP, Ardmore, Pa.-Some years ago I made a swinging spider to carry a string of casing in a way somewhat similar to that described in this paper. The ground I tried it in was too soft for its successful operation. The spider had a central one-flange bushing to carry the slips. Under this flange and on top of the spider was a properly protected ball runway, or ball bearing, which permitted rotating the casing when it was in place and supported by the slips.

INTRODUCTION Gaudin (1), considered that "the mechanism of mineral collection is the central problem of flotation theory". From their work on adsorption phenomena in flotation for more than fifty years (2), Gaudin and his co-workers have made major contributions to the elucidation of this mechanism, a fact acknowledged by their contemporaries in the field (e.g. (3)). Their investigations in a number of areas, e. g. demonstrating that submonolayer quantities of adsorbed collector species can induce flotation, or identifying the influence of substances which can activate or depress (1), have helped to provide the basis for and the development of a theory to account for the interaction between mineral and collector. It was established in the late fifties (4) that the presence of oxygen is a prerequisite for the flotation of metal sulfides with thiol collectors. This fact rendered inadequate the concept of simple ion adsorption being responsible for rendering these minerals hydrophobic. The requirement for oxygen has been explained (1) in terms of this species being a component in chemical reactions between the sulfide surface and the collector. Gaudin has been instrumental in identifying the products of chemical reactions at sulfide minerals (1, 5), a line of work which has been continued particularly by Finkelstein and co-workers in South Africa (6). A study of rock support interaction mechanics was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at the Jim Walter Resources No. 7 Mine, Brookwood, AL. Bolt loads and entry deformation were monitored at four sites in a tailgate roadway. Two sites were areas supported by fully grouted resin bolts, and two sites were supported by tensioned bolts that used resin-assisted mechanical anchors. The yield capacity of the tensioned bolts was 37 pct higher than that of the grouted bolts. To monitor loads, instruments were mounted on 16 bolts, which were installed during entry development in the standard bolt pattern. Additional instrumented bolts were installed as supplemental support just prior to the headgate pass of the first longwall. Instruments to measure roof movements included three-point roof extensometers and convergence stations. Readings were taken during section development and as each longwall panel passed the test area. The fully grouted bolts showed localized loads that were higher than loads on the tensioned bolts; however, overall loading magnitudes were similar. Many sections of the fully grouted bolts passed the yield point of the bolt steel (98 kN or 22,000 lb). However, the maximum strain measured at any loca¬tion was 50 pct of the ultimate strain, and there was adequate bolt length to transfer the high loads into the rock. Significant bending was detected at many points along the length of the bolts and seemed to be the most significant mechanism in support-rock interaction. Loads on the tensioned bolts did not exceed the yield point of 160 kN (35,000 lb). Entry deforma¬tion, supplemental bolt loading, and general entry degradation appeared to be slightly less at the tensioned bolt sites. Local geology and in situ horizontal stress were also observed to affect con¬ditions at the test sites.

The selection of the proper type of flotation machine involves the consideration of a wide variety of factors. Under any condition, all types of machines will promote some kind of separation. Obviously, the correct way of deciding which type of machine is best suited for a particular problem would be to set up all types of machines and test them out in a competitive manner, but the vast number of small concentrating plants are unable to make such complete and exhaustive tests. The experience of the authors of this paper indicates that if all the factors involved in any particular problem can be determined, and if all the flotation-machine characteristics are understood, some basis for selection could be arrived at other than actual comparison. This paper is presented to show how the process factors and machine characteristics have been combined at the mills of the Tennessee Copper Co. from studies of several types of flotation machines. At the two mills of the Tennessee Copper Co. in the Ducktown Basin of Tennessee, four distinct flotation separations are made on the complex sulphide ore. Three different concentrates are produced from the ore—in the order of their importance: iron concentrate, copper concentrate, and zinc concentrate. Four different types of flotation machines are used. The selection of these four machines, for the plant operation, was based upon the study and operating experience of the machine units shown in the following list: Fagergren machine; square cell, size 56 inches Fagergren machine; level type, size 56 inches Denver machine; conical disk impeller, size 24 inches Denver machine; receded disk impeller, size 24 inches Minerals Separation Sub-A, size 24 inches Munro-Pearse deep cell, pneumatic Southwestern air machine, Hunt principle To date the study of flotation machines has been confined almost entirely to the rougher circuits. The various cleaning operations, being relatively a much simpler matter, have not been investigated so thoroughly. Table I shows a typical analysis of the two ores as well as of the mineral content.

SUFFICIENT testing has been performed with the Dutch State Mines Cyclone for thickening and desliming flotation feed at the concentrator of the National Lead Co., Tahawus, N. Y., to prove its application for this work. It is the purpose of this article to present some of the test results, operational details and advantages of cyclone thickening and classification. The metallurgy of the mill operation was described by Frank R. Milliken, assistant manager of the titanium division.l The present flowsheet for the recovery of ilmenite consists in grinding the crushing plant product in four open-end rod mills in closed circuit with mechanically vibrating screens to approximately -20 mesh. The screen undersize is treated in Crockett magnetic separators which produce three products: magnetic concentrate, nonmagnetic tailing containing ilmenite and gangue, and a Crockett slime overflow. The non- magnetic tailing is classified into eight sizer spigots products and a classifier overflow. The spigot sand products are tabled separately to produce a rough ilmenite concentrate, a middling product and a tailing. The table middlings are returned to Crockett feed. The table concentrate is dewatered and dried and further concentrated on Wetherill magnetic separators to produce the finished ilmenite concentrate.

Metallic droplets can remain attached to solid particles within liquid slags, resulting in production losses in several movement of solid particles in the liquid slag in a system, considering the attachment of liquid metal droplets to solid slag and on the resulting microstructures is investigated as a function of the velocity of the particles. For all wetting For the amount of metal attached to the particle, a clear trade-off was found between the speed of motion of the solid particle and the wetting regime.

To provide a relatively structurally stable form of dried lump lignite, two North Dakota lignites from Mercer County were dried by the Fleissner process in an atmosphere of saturated steam at 200, 300, and 370 p.s.i.a. pressure, corresponding to steam temperatures of 382°, 417°, and 437° F., respectively. Two series of experiments were made at each test pressure with the individual lignites. In one series, the autoclave was preheated to the processing temperature before charging the lignite; in the other the lignite was charged into the autoclave at room temperature. In each case, heat losses were determined by blank tests of steam consumption over a similar operating cycle with the empty autoclave. The degree of moisture removal and net steam consumption were calculated from material balances. The amount of water removed as a liquid from the two North Dakota lignites during the heating and steaming periods was compared with results calculated from previously published data on drying Austrian lignite and Australian brown coal. These lignites, covering a wide geographical area, had original moisture contents ranging from 35 to 49 percent. The Austrian lignite and Australian brown coal are considered to be of Miocene Age, and the Dakota lignites belong to the Paleocene.

TO these reports you are referred for additional details of the year's activity. Finances.-Income for 1933 from all sources totaled $121,690 com- pared with $138,331 in 1932. Incidentally, this exceeded the income as estimated in the budget by $7,190; the largest item being a "surplus" of $3,316 over the budget expectancy as to member dues. As compared with 1932 the most important items of shrinkage in income were $9,000 from dues and initiation fees; $5,500 from the magazine, MINING AND METALLURGY; and $2,500 from sales of publications other than the magazine.

A mineral survey of the 20,792-acre Sand Butte WSA (Wilderness study Area), ID-57-8, was conducted by U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel in 1985, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management. The WSA is in Lincoln County, south-central Idaho, about 15 miles south-southeast of Carey. There are no mines, prospects, or claims within the WSA. Basaltic lava is the only rock type exposed within the WSA. The only mineral resource is a few tons of a platy variety of lava (slab pahoehoe) which is suitable for use as decorative stone. Similar slab pahoehoe, produced from other lava fields in southern Idaho, retails for approximately $125/ton. The deposit in the WSA is too small to be mined commercially but may have value to consumers who gather their own decorative stone. INTRODUCTION A mineral survey of the Sand Butte WSA (Wilderness Study Area) 1/ was conducted in June 1985 by the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) and the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of the investigations will he used to help determine the suitability of the WSA for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. The immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data to the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions. The long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

A database of over 1300 earthquakes has been used to investigate the relationship between seismicity and tectonics in two areas of eastern Queensland and NE New South Wales. These areas have been monitored by several networks that were installed primarily to monitor seismicity associated with the impounding of large reservoirs. Events that occurred prior to the installation of these networks have been excluded from the analysis because they have large uncertainties in location.Seismicity in SE Queensland and NE New South Wales is concentrated in the coastal regions. Activity also extends off the coast of Queensland and beyond the continental shelf. The coastal activity is mainly within the New England Fold Belt. An area of the fold belt overlain by the Clarence-Moreton Basin is also active. There is an area of activity near St. George that correlates to the Wunger Ridge. Fraser Island and the adjacent onshore area, near Maryborough, are notably aseismic.Within the New England Fold Belt there is a NNW trending zone of concentrated activity that includes the South D'Aguilar Block and the Esk Trough as far as Gayndah. The Nambour Basin, the Gympie Province, and the southern portion of the Yarrol Block are significantly less active.Composite focal mechanisms of several groups of accurately located earthquakes in SE Queensland indicate predominantly reverse faulting. This faulting is the result of the crust being compressed horizontally in a NE-SW direction.Activity in the Burdekin Falls Dam area of central eastern Queensland is confined to the Drummond and Bowen Basins. There is also significant activity offshore from Townsville and Bowen.

As prefatory to the body of this paper, a few general statements will be made (1) in regard to the history and importance of the asbestos industry, (2) as to the principal sources of the raw material, and (3) as to the types and modes of occurrence of asbestos. While the modern asbestos industry is comparatively new and its growth during the last decade or two has been marvelous, asbestos has been known and used in a small way for probably 2,000 years-at least since the time of the Roman Empire. Pliny refers to it as "the funeral dress of kings" and Plutarch records its use as lamp wicks. In the middle of the 18th century the deposits of the Ural mountains were opened up and the first factory for the manufacture of asbestos goods was established. But, owing to the limited demand for the goods, the industry disappeared and interest lapsed until about 50 years ago. Since 1860, the asbestos industry has made wonderful strides, and each year sees new uses to which the material can be put, and hence an increased demand and an increased output. Of the three great producers of asbestos, Canada, Russia, and the United States, Canada stands pre-eminent, producing from one-half to three-fourths of the world's supply; Russia comes second, producing ,in 1911 about two and one-half times ,is much as the United States. In 1912 the Canadian production,1 including both asbestos and asbestic, was 131,260 short tons, valued at $2,979,384; while during the same year the production of the United States2 was 4,403 tons, valued at $57,959. Canada holds the first place in the production of raw asbestos, while the United States holds the first place in its manufacture.

In 1910 the Richmond-Eureka Co. suspended all operations except small-scale leasing, but company and other geologists contended that the El Dorado dolomite would also carry ore in its continuation from fault block north and northeast of the productive old working. The company began to explore the fault block in 1923 by diamond drilling from the,900 level of the Locan shaft, but for various reasons the hole was drilled to a depth of only 2 feet and was then abandoned. Eureka Corporation, Ltd., planned an extensive diamond-drilling program, which included four deep diamond-drill holes, one designated ""A"" fig. if it is to be drilled from the surfaced, and three designated ""E"", ""C"" and ""D"" figs land to be drilled from the 900 level of the Locan shaft. Of these only B and C were completed by the company. Hole C was a contribution,of the hole started by the, started by the Richmond Eureka Co. The site for hole D (figs. 1 and 2) was prepared, but the hole was not drilled. Both B and C holes penetrated sulfide ore carrying good percentages of zinc, lead, gold, and silver. The ore bodies were 40 feet thick and were found approximately 1,400 feet below the 900 level of Locan shaft.On the basis of the very favorable results obtained from the drilling program, the Eureka Corporation planned extensive development of the property and in 1942 commenced sinking the Fad shaft (figs. 1 and 2). The shortage of equipment and materials brought on by the war and difficulties with water in the shaft greatly hindered progress. However, early in 1943 the Eureka Cor¬poration, Ltd., of Canada submitted to the War Production Board a proposal for developing the mine and milling 500 tons of zinc-lead ore a day. The proposal involved an expenditure of $2,890,750."

Maximizing shareholder value has become a common aim for mining companies. This paper discusses the results of a number of studies developing strategic mine plans, covering a wide range of commodities, styles of mineralization, mining methods, and processing facilities, for single and multiple deposits. It has become evident that traditional methods and conventional wisdom often do not in fact achieve these goals. Operating policies at many mines ensure that shareholder value is not maximized. Changing the overall strategy can provide significant value gains. Typically, the new optimal plan involves a significant increase in the cutoff grade, at least in the earlier years. An increase in the underground development rate or open cut stripping rate is often associated with this, at least in the short term, to establish the new strategy. Cost minimization is found to be counter-productive. Counter-intuitive plans are often found to be optimal. For example, optimal cutoffs for different parts of an underground mine may be significantly different, even if mineralisation and cost structures are similar. Sub-optimal strategies are also frequently found to have a significantly greater financial risk than optimal plans, which have been found in many cases to be relatively insensitive to changes in major value drivers, such as metal prices. This paper shows how identifying and then operating within the framework of an optimal strategic plan can have substantial benefits over being continually driven by short-term tactical issues.
