The Rapidex continuous spiral blast tunneling concept uses a spiral blast pattern that provides efficient slabbing action, continuous progression, and partial self-shielding. A lightly shielded tunneling machine using this concept stays at the face to provide continuous drill, load, shoot, and muck functions. Previous phases proved the effectiveness of the blast pattern in the White Pine Shale tested the design features of the shield and developed a remote loading and shooting capability using inductively initiated blasting caps and a pumpable slurry explosive. Phase IV assembled previously used front-end elements (drill, loading components, shield) on a used Joy loader chassis and added a mucking system television monitoring and remote control elements. Remote television monitored loading shooting and mucking were investigated. Difficulty was experienced in locating previously drilled blastholes near the bottom of the heading and even on the face. These holes often had to be considered as lost. Because of hydraulic system deficiencies and overall congestion of machine elements at the face mucking rates obtainable with remote television monitoring were low (on the order of 16 tons per hour). Performance was good enough to indicate improved rates if more space were available and if extreme thoroughness were not required. Because of the serious nature of the lost hole problem, a new explosive loading scheme was given a preliminary evaluation. The new scheme would require the explosive and the detonating charge to be loaded through the drill steel. If the necessary equipment modifications could he made and if safe, efficient operation were assured, the new scheme would alleviate some of the crowding at the face and would eliminate the lost hole problem.

Drill monitors for blasthole and exploration drills have been available to the mining industry since the 1970s. The early monitors were pen strip chart recorders which were developed for the oil drilling industry and adapted to mining. They recorded drilling parameters such as depth, pull-down pressure, torque, RPM, and bailing air pressure. While these recorders could generate a large volume of paper, the amount of useful data was minimal. The data was not summarised and required an engineer to interrupt the chart traces. Being a mechanical recorder, the devices were also susceptible to frequent failures.

(Member) The iron charged to the basic oxygen furnace at the steel plant of Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation has a relatively high sulphur content. Considerable emphasis is therefore placed on the reactivity of the lime. An investigation of the lime used at the steel plant showed that its reactivity had deteriorated considerably both during transport from the supplier (Northern Lime Company) and during storage and handling at the steel plant. The deterioration on the steel plant is the more severe, and is due to hydration and carbonation. Rapid deterioration is a characteristic of highly reactive lime when exposed to the atmosphere. Plant tests showed that the desulphurization efficiency decreases with a decrease in the reactivity of the lime. The addition of slag rich in manganous oxide to the furnace considerably improved the efficiency of desulphurization that can be achieved with limes of lower reactivity and with lime that has deteriorated. A decrease in particle size of lime of lower reactivity greatly increased the desulphurization efficiency. Less lime of higher reactivity is required for the same degree of desulphurization to be achieved. Lime of higher reactivity gives rise to slags with lower ferrous oxide contents and hence the steel yield is increased.

A geologic study of Mines 32 and 33 in Cambria County, Pa., was conducted as part of a methane control research program. Areas of high methane emission and roof instability are encountered which are related to the structural and stratigraphic features that characterize the geologic setting of these mines. Locally the folds trend N 20° E ±2°, the direction of the butt cleat in the Lower Kittanning coal. The face cleat strikes at N 69° W ±2° and the systematic rock joint in the surface bedrock strikes N 67° W ±2°This suggests that a directional stress oriented N 70° W produced the folds and influenced the directions of coal cleat and systematic joint sets. Analysis of SLAR indicates three directions of prominent regional lineation: N 39° E, N 31° W, and N 70° W. Little gas was encountered during development mining; large volumes of gas are encountered when roof falls. Most of the gas comes from strata above the mined coal; therefore, to control methane, roof instability must be controlled. Roof falls and high rates of methane emission are most likely where less than 30 feet of many thin layers of limestone, shale, and sandstone occurs between the Lower Kittanning coal and the next coal and in zones along the margins of a sandstone channel.

"SynopsisThe densities of selected CaO-Al2O3-MgO slag systems were measured at 1823K by the Archimedean method. Thirteen different slag compositions were chosen based on different levels of the MgO content and the mass ratio of CaO/Al2O3. The results indicated that the density of the slag decreases with increasing MgO content (from 0–3.78 mass%), but increases with further increases in MgO content up to 11.33 mass%. At a fixed MgO content of 5.5%, the trend of density change with CaO/Al2O3 in the slag is similar to that for changes in MgO content. On the basis of the regular solution approximation rules of excess molar quantities, an attempt was made to estimate the molar volume of the slags investigated. The application of the molar volume model confirmed that the present expanded approximation rules are applicable to predict the molar volumes of the melts discussed.IntroductionDensity is one of the most important fundamental properties of slags, which influences metallurgicaly phenomena in many ways. Density is sensitive to the nature of the chemical bonds and the species in the melt, and is of great importance not only for theoretical research on the structural properties of molten slags, but also for industrial applications. Density is also required to estimate other key properties used to assess the behaviour of high-temperature molten oxides, e.g. viscosity, surface tension, and thermal conductivity.Liquid calcium aluminate slags that contain magnesia are the basis of most ladle slags for secondary refining processes. The CaO-Al2O3 binary phase diagram (Hallstedt , 1990) shows the eutectic composition (50 wt% CaO and wt% Al2O3) has the lowest melting temperature. The main emphasis of this study is on the 12CaO·7Al2O3 refining slag with MgO additions. The CaO-Al2O3-MgO ternary system is of considerable importance in industrial metallurgical processes, and is fundamental to the understanding of metallurgical slags, ceramic materials, and geological phenomena."

"The obscurity which still veils from us the true nature of veins will become more acid more cleared up when they can be considered in connection with the geological structure of the regions in which they occur." 1 THESE words, according to Lossen, the biographer of the late Dr. A. von Groddeck, of Clausthal, were the last received by him from that eminent man, perhaps the most far-sighted and carefully progressive of recent writers on ore-deposits. They seem to me to form a fitting text for what I am about to say ; since I find that many of the conclusions at which I have arrived by my own study of the structural relations of ore-deposits,or, in other words, of the structural and dynamic geology of the regions in which they occur in this country, have been similarly determined by hint within recent years in Europe, and especially in his home field of work, the Harz. I shall not enter upon a detailed account of how far other workers may have arrived at similar conclusions with myself, since these questions of priority are of little interest, except to those immediately concerned; but will briefly present the methods by which, in my work in this country, I have arrived at certain generalizations, and will point out the practical bearing which they may have upon the work of mining engineers. Newmont Australia Limited has for some 15 years mined a number of large open cuts associated with the Telfer Gold Dome deposits. The principal ore body exploited has been the East Flank of the Main Dome where a very high grade gold reef deposit of mixed metal sulphides, grades in excess of 20gA Au, has been mined in conjunction with dissemi- nated mineralisation contained in the overburden material. The main ore body has been under review for some years as an under- ground mine, however due to the ore body widths of less than 1 metre and a dip generally less than 35 degrees and a very weak host rocks earlier studies all resulted in a continuation of open pit mining activities. In early 1988 it was recognised that open cast mining would not be able to mine all of this valuable resource and a feasibility study was commenced to come up with a practical and economic approach to underground mining.

In view of the gradually decreasing known reserves of high-grade manganese ore and the rapidly increasing consumption of iron-manganese alloys in the steel industry, it is well to turn our attention to the development of low-grade manganiferous ore deposits and to the utilization of these ores in steel manufacture. The dependence of this country on imported manganese ore and ferromanganese has been forcibly brought to the attention of steel makers during the last few years by the cessation of manganese-ore imports from Russia, the restriction of manganese-ore imports from India and of ferromanganese imports from Europe. Should the importation of manganese ore from Biazil cease, the steel industry of this country would face a serious situation. The present practice of steel making requires ferromanganese in large quantities and ferromanganese of the grade used at present can be produced only from high-grade manganese ores such as the United States appears to possess only in insignificant amounts. There are in the United States, however, large reserves of manganiferous iron ore which could probably be used extensively in the steel industry if certain changes in the practice of steel manufacture were made. Thus high-grade manganese ore could be conserved. Among the most important deposits of manganiferous iron ore in this couniry are those of the Cuyuna iron-ore district of Minnesota. It is probable that in case of restriction of foreign supplies, the users of manganese in the United States would have to rely to a large extent on the Cuyuna district to make up the shortage. Vapor pressures of silver over ternary alloys of six different copper to gold ratios have been measured by means of the Knudsen effusion technique. The data obtained in the temperature range of 1330° to 1375° have been used to estimate the integral excess free energies of the ternary alloys and the activities of copper and gold. The results compare favorably to the predictions based on the electron cell model of alloys recently formulated by the authors. THE orifice effusion method for measuring vapor pressures of materials in condensed phases was first introduced by knudsen, and has since been used extensively for the determination of thermodynamic properties of condensed phases. The basis of the measurement is the effusion, through a small orifice, of vapor in equilibrium with a condensed phase. Assuming free molecular flow into high vacuum, the vapor pressure, P (in mm Hg), of the effusing species is calculated from the following equation:' where w (g) is the weight of effusing species lost during a run, t (sec) the time length of the run, A, (sq cm) the area of the effusion orifice, T ("K) the temperature at which the run is conducted, M the molecular weight of the effusing species, and k the Clausing factor, a constant that corrects for deviations from free molecular flow caused by the finite thickness of the orifice walls.17 The determination of partial and integral thermodynamic variables from vapor pressure data of ternary alloys is possible only if the vapor pressures of all but one component are negligible or can be esti-

A GREAT number of hypotheses has been advanced to explain the complex phenomena that are encountered in flotation. In the days of bulk-oil flotation, when a large quantity of oil was employed, it was observed that the oil-mineral aggregate floated above the ore-pulp because of its lesser density. With the advent of froth-flotation this phase of the theory had to be modified to take into account the presence of air bubbles. The reason why the mineral-bearing froth of today rises to the top of flotation cells is, of course, because the air-mineral aggregate, with whatever reagent may be associated with it, is lighter than the pulp. In an attempt to explain froth-flotation the fact has been emphasized that certain minerals are wetted and therefore remain in water; while others are not wetted and therefore become associated in preference with air. Such an "explanation" does not explain facts, it merely states them; for instance, it does not explain why minerals are wetted under some circumstances and not wetted under others. Going somewhat further, the wetting or nonwetting of minerals by water has been ascribed' to differences in the angles of contact between oil droplets and mineral surface at the surface of the minerals. This explanation, however, was abandoned when soluble flotation reagents came to replace the so-called "insoluble" reagents. Another theory, sponsored about 10 years ago by Ralston,2 involves the effects of electric charges at the surface of the minerals particles and air bubbles. This theory, unfortunately, was not developed as fully as it seems desirable.

[NoTE.—-This paper was presented at the Pittsburgh meeting in a partially completed form, and I fully expected to obtain, before the period of its publication, both the data and the leisure required for its completion. The hygiene of collieries was to have been separately considered, and the sanitary conditions of various metallurgical industries connected with mining were to receive an extended discussion, while at the same time the points treated in the paper as prosented at Pittsburgh were to have more ample illustration from American and European sources. Delay in obtaining expected information, and the continuous pressure of professional work, have prevented hitherto the execution of this plan ; and I can now publish only a portion of what I had designed to contribute to the subject. In the meantime this portion, but slightly changed, has been included as a chapter on the Hygiene of Metal Mines in a work entitled Hygiene and Public Health,, edited by Dr. A. H. Buck, of New York. An excellent chapter on the Hygiene of Coal Mines, contributed to the same work by Mr. Henry C. Sheafer, of Pottsville, affords me an opportunity to supply one of the deficiencies above alluded to. Mr. Shearer's chapter contains much material in the way of explanations not required by professional readers; And be moreover devotes a considerable space to the explosive gases, falls of roof, and other causes of accidents to life or limb—a branch of the subject not belonging strictly to bygiene. I therefore make extracts only from his treatise.—R. W. R ] It is convenient to divide mines, with reference to this subject, into two classes, collieries and metal-mines. Subterranean quarries, rock-salt mines, etc., present no conditions requiring them to be separated from the latter class.

The cross-measure borehole technique is being studied by the Bureau of Mines as an alternative to the use of surface gob boreholes as a means of controlling methane in gobs during longwall mining. Small-diameter holes are drilled from underground locations into strata overlying the mined coalbed. When the roof strata are fractured by the mining opera- tion, a partial vacuum applied to the boreholes draws the methane out of the fractured strata and prevents it from entering the mine ventilation system. Tests in the Upper Kittanning Coalbed showed that 50 pct of the methane produced by the longwall mining operation was captured by the cross-measure boreholes. Borehole inclination and penetration into the gob are two important borehole parameters that affect the performance of the cross-measure borehole system.

A venturi based multi-scrubber air cleaning system has been developed for dust control along a longwall face in coal mines. The system consists of a number of scrubbers. strategically placed along the wall face which deliver cleaned air at high exhaust velocity into the middle section of the longwall cross-section thus dividing it into two zones. The aim is to maintain the walkway on the powered support side as a zone of relatively clean air. Laboratory studies have shown that the scrubber's average efficiency is 90 per cent. Field trials in three longwall faces have shown that. under normal operating conditions. 40 to 50 per cent average protection efficiency can be achieved within 3 m to 4 m downstream of the scrubber. A three-dimensional finite element computational fluid dynamic model. FIDAP. was used to simulate the airflow patterns the dust concentration and the scrubber dust control technique at a typical longwall face. Results of simulations tally very well with the field results.

The Bureau of Mines investigated methods for beneficiating platinumgroup metal ores from the Stillwater Complex , Montana , as part of its program to increase the supply of critical and strategic minerals and metals from domestic resources . This report presents results of a 5- day continuous campaign employing a pilot flotation mill to recover sulfide concentrate containing platinum- palladium values from anorthositic ore . A mercaptobenzothiazole - sulfuric acid reagent suite was used . The pilot flotation mill was operated at an average feed rate of 106 lb/ hr of ore . A rougher concentrate containing 8.5 pct of the feed was prepared ; it assayed 1.1 oz /ton Pt and 3.5 oz / ton Pd . Recovery of platinum and palladium were 91 and 87 pct , respectively .

After an adventurous past-four changes of government in thirty years -the whole of Silesia and attached coal territories have become part of the Polish State. The coal resources of this area are the biggest among the European countries. Under a surface area of 5700 sq km are about 100 coal seams, with a total thickness of 150 meters. According to German estimates, there are some 150 billion metric tons of coal ranging in thickness up to 14 m within a depth of 1500 m. The seams are mostly level, free from faults, with good top and bottom; the coal is of excellent quality, hard and clean; and mining conditions are favorable. The mines are worked at considerable depth by means of vertical shafts and operate with cage and skip hoisting. Before the war, the mines were up to date, equipped with modern machines. Among the European countries, output per man shift was the highest ? 1.9 to 2.1 metric tons ? and cost of production was the lowest.

The Bureau of Mines air-sealed a 77-acre) above-drainage coal mine to evaluate sealing as a means of reducing the acid and metallic salt contents in drainage from abandoned mines. An approximate reduction in acidity of 150 ppm (equivalent to 193 pounds per day) and in iron of 98 ppm were directly attributed to sealing. The topographical, hydrological, and other factors involved in air-sealing are discussed, and the construction used to seal the mine is described.

Any future developer of underground mining on the Bendigo goldfield will need to understand the unique geology and gold occurrence of this field. The development and sloping system employed will be primarily designed around these unique features. Modern techniques and equipment used in narrow vein mining will be applicable in this situation.The purpose of this paper is to examine the important geological features of the field as well as the known historical occurrences of the type of gold deposition in the ore bodies. This information will point to a system of development and extraction which will accommodate these features.
