Investigations on the beneficiation of sedimentary Moroccan phosphate ores are reported in four separate parts. The first discusses electrochemical phenomena at the solid-aqueous solution interface for minerals of the apatite group. In the second part, the electrochemical properties of the calcareous gangue associated with the phosphate ore are investigated. The flotation of calcite and phosphate oölites, using both anionic and cationic collectors, is discussed in the third part. It is shown that selective recovery could be obtained for precise concentrations of collectors and pH ranges. Results of work aimed at optimizing depression of phosphate oölites during inverse flotation of the carbonate gangue with sodium oleate are reported in Part 4.

The design, construction and operation ofa laboratory scale rotary pot kiln are outlined. Charges ofup to 3 kg can be heated to temperatures up to 1200°C in a controlled atmosphere. Some examples of pyrometallurgical investigations carried out using the kiln are briefly described, including thermal reactivation ofcarbon using steam at 550-850°C, high temperature testing ofkiln liners for corrosion resistance to fluoride, and calcination oflimestone. Results obtained from these trials allow either direct scale-up to the Engineering Chemistry Laboratory's pilot-scale (50-100 kg/hr) rotary kiln or modifications to be made to commercial scale processes and/or equipment.

During initial mining operations at the Colosseum gold mine, discrepancies between the average blasthole grades and mill-head grades were quite large. In December 1987, mill-head grades averaged 39% lower than corre¬sponding estimates from the blastholes. The correlation between average blasthole grade and mill-head grade had an r-value of 0.015. The magnitude of the discrepancy and the lack of correspondence between estimated and actual grades led to a series of investigations of the sampling system, the effect of blast movement of the ore, and the estimation methodology. The discrepancy between blasthole grades and mill-head grades had been reduced by about half on a percentage basis at the conclusion of these studies. Ongoing studies have produced changes that reduced this discrepancy to its present level of less than 10%. Geology The Colosseum mine is within the Clark Mountain mining district about 68 km (42 miles) southwest of Las Vegas, NV in San Bernardino County, CA. Gold mineralization at the deposit is hosted in two 152 m x 213 m (500 ft x 700 ft) interconnected, rhyolitic intrusive breccia pipes that intruded Pre¬cambrian crystalline basement rocks and overlying Paleozoic marine sedimentary rocks. Subsequent erosion (deroofing) of all of the Paleozoic section and a portion of the Precambrian section has exposed the pipes to the present level (probably a significant depth in the original breccia pipe system). Lithologies exhibited within the breccia pipe complexes include rhyolitic felsite, and breccias of felsite and wall/ country rock. Breccia types grade from felsite plus Precambrian granite-gneiss fragments in an aphanitic felsite matrix to crosscutting breccias of felsite, Precambrian granite-gneiss, and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks in a matrix of finely comminuted material of the same composition. All the lithologies in and around the breccia pipes exhibit moderate to intense quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration, with sericite and pyrite the dominant visual alteration minerals. Gold at the Colosseum mine is generally submicroscopic and associated with sulfide mineralization, chiefly pyrite. It occurs as free gold, with minor alloyed silver. It is primarily in contact with pyrite in fractures or along pyrite grain edges. Secondarily, it appears as isolated particles in quartz and other gangue minerals but spatially always close to pyrite, and rarely as particles encased in euhedral pyrite. The pyrite mineralization and minor base metal sulfides occur in three distinct styles: as disseminations, as open space or vein/fracture filling, and in breccia clasts replacing dolomite. The pyrite megascopically ranges from absent to 30% of rock volume within the breccia pipes. Although the gold at Colosseum is apparently spatially and geochemically associated with pyrite, there is only a general proportional relationship between pyrite content and gold content. Sometimes, a high volume percentage of pyrite has only geochemically anomalous gold. This makes visual pyrite only a general grade control tool and not a specific tool. This further makes the ore control process at Colosseum all the more difficult. Initial grade control procedure Initial grade control was based on blasthole samples collected in two stages by an "automatic" sample collection device (rocket sampler). A sample was collected for the top 3 m (10 ft) in a hole. The bag was then changed so that a sample was collected for the lower 3 m (10 ft). Each sample was prepared and fire assayed to determine the grade. Large discrepancies were sometimes noted in the assays of top and bottom samples. OVER-ALL operations of the oil industry, as measured by production of crude oil and consumption of products, are almost exactly of the same magnitude as a year ago. Does this mean that the great oil industry has been undisturbed by the war? Has this industry, so vital to the prosecution of the war and to the maintenance of our way of life, been unaffected in its operations? No indeed - changes within the industry are great. It has been called upon to revamp its trans¬portation methods so as to move about one fourth of the total amount of crude and refined products by railroad tank car instead of by ocean-going tankers. Its fundamental internal economy, based on maximum gasoline yield from a barrel of crude, has been relegated to memories of the past. Rationing of oil products, which has been forced upon us in face of an abundant supply, is not only disagreeable medicine but is in itself completely disruptive to the marketing end of the-business.-

THIS report is the first of a series planned by The Mineral Inquiry, organized by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to make factual studies of the world's mineral resources in their political and international relations. The efforts of The Inquiry are directed toward filling certain notable gaps in available information, without duplication of many other investigations touching this field which are being conducted by other organizations, public and private. Much of its work is indirect-suggesting topics for study by other individuals and organizations and aiding in their planning and correlation. The present report is designed to show the nationality of the commercial control of mineral resources, in addition to the geographic distribution of production by nation-in other words, the overlapping of political and commercial control. Detailed accuracy cannot be claimed for the figures presented. For some companies division of ownership by nationality has been very difficult to ascertain, as many companies are reluctant to dis-close the extent of their holdings in other corporations, and the impossi-bility of tracing all stock ownership is obvious. Also there are frequent changes in the distribution of stock control. The percentages given rep-resent only the participation that has been identified definitely, even though it is known in some cases with fair certainty that larger interests exist, as, for instance, American participation in foreign chromite companies. In bringing together these figures we have had the cordial co-operation of the United States Bureau of Mines, the United States Geologi-cal Survey, the Mineral Division of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, the Brookings Institution, and of many specialists connected with the mineral industries covered. The report does not cover the entire list of minerals. Coal, although it is one of the most important minerals, was omitted because, not more than one or two per cent of the world's production comes from mines that are owned by companies foreign to the countries where the coal is produced. Others, such as gold, are omitted because sufficient data have not yet been accumulated. It is hoped that some of these may be covered in subsequent reports. It is not our purpose here to discuss the significance of the figures sub-mitted, but only to point out the general nature of the problems on which they have a bearing.

During the development of the Neves-Corvo Underground Copper Mine, since 1981, inflow of water has been encountered in the mine workings, which consist of a ramp from surface 5 km long, a shaft 575 m deep and access crosscuts through the massive sulphide orebodies of Neves, Corvo and Graga, which are three of the four known deposits up today. Mine-hydrological studies have established the main characteristics of the hydrological system and its evolution in space and time. In a geological setting of low permeability rocks of Paleozoic age, tectonically affected by thrusts and faults, this has involved consideration of the relation with surface and ground water as a result of mine dewatering processes. The hydrological systems are described and summarized in this paper together with the techniques employed to study their origin and evolution, namely hydrochemistry, thermometry, piezometry and isotopic tracers.

PROBABLY the majority of red brass sand castings are judged merely on the basis of outside appearance and the quality of machined surfaces. Many castings, however, must individually withstand a hydraulic or air-pressure test before being accepted as parts of more complicated machin-ery. Finally, there remains a comparatively small group of castings intended for uses of considerable responsibility where only the highest possible characteristics of the metal are acceptable, and for these specially cast test bars are required. The shape of the cast piece from which the test bar must be detached varies greatly from one country to another. The test bar as specified in the American Society for Testing Materials Specification B62-36 is widely used by the American foundry industry. The actual test piece is at the bottom of the cast block and has a riser about six times its mass. It is obvious that this test bar has an advantage over the actual casting. The latter rarely possesses a riser of as much as 30 per cent of its own weight and that riser cannot generally be located in so convenient a manner. Therefore, the characteristics of the test bar cannot possibly correspond to those of the casting itself. It must be taken into consideration that red brass if melted and cast in the best possible manner may show a tensile strength of 40,000 lb. per sq. in. with 35 per cent elongation in 2 in. Such a test bar would indicate that the metal was nearly perfect from the viewpoint of its gas and inclusion content. Barring some accidental defect, a casting cor-responding to such a test bar could be accepted as being quite sound. However, actual specifications do not demand such high characteristics; indeed, few specifications require over 30,000 lb. per sq. in. and 20 per cent elongation, while one Federal specification demands merely 27,000 lb. per sq. in. strength and 15 per cent elongation. In the processing of molten metals, it is extremely important to monitor continuously the concentration levels of various minor elements, In the production of common metals like copper, iron and aluminium electrochemical sensors involving solid, as well as liquid electrolytes are being increasingly used to measure the concentrations of minor elements The present paper deals with the electrochemical principles underlying these measurements and the possible errors involved. One of the major difficulties in the case of the solid electrolytes is to correct for the consequences oldie electronic contribution to the conduction of the electrolyte. The application of the electrochemical sensors for molten metals processing involves designing of these probes to withstand the industrial operating conditions. In this respect, significant achievements have been made with respect to the design of oxygen probes for liquid metals in general and liquid copper in particular. Some of the salient design features are discussed in the paper, The application of auxiliary electrodes for impurities in molten metals like phosphorus in copper and silicon in iron are taken up. The development of oxygen sensors for slags is given special attention. Recent developments' in the field of sensor technology, as applied to metals processing are highlighted.

Introduction This paper presents in detailed form the results of settling tests that were published in a few preliminary notes in the April 1949 issue of the Bulletin (p. 166). Carborel is the trade name for sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose and aluminium carboxymethyl-cellulose produced by the reaction of monochloroacetic acid on the alkali cellulose to form an ether. The water-soluble sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose has been known in Europe for several years as sodium cellulose glycolate and has been marketed under several trade names. These cellulose ethers, however, are relatively new in North America, where the name carboxymethyl-cellulose is often abbreviated to C.M.C., or they are referred to as cellulose gum. The particular grade of Carboxel used in the settling tests in the mill of Chesterville Mines, Limited, is the high-viscosity sodium carboxymethyl- cellulose known as Carboxel H.V. It is a white, fluffy powder and is hygroscopic, although not deliquescent. Carboxel solutions in water are colourless, odourless, and resistant to beat and light. They are stable to alkalies, but are precipitated by acids when the pH is reduced below 4.0, and also by solutions of soluble lead, iron, copper, aluminium, and chromium salts. Solutions of Carboxel exhibit the properties of hydrophilic colloids.

The Northland Peninsula of northern North Island, New Zealand contains a complex and diverse record of volcanism which reflects rapid tectonic changes during the late Cenozoic. The main volcanic associations observed on the peninsula are late Cretaceous- early oceanic crust obducted onto Northland at the end of the Oligocene, Miocene arc-type rocks and Pliocene-Quaternary intraplate basalts. This sucession of volcanic successions can be related to tectonic convergence developing into subduction and followed by a an environment of tectonic tension. While the volcanic activity is ultimately linked to specific tectonic regimes, because of rapid change magmatism was decoupled from the specific tectonic event. This decoupling of magmatism and tectonism appears to be a feature of the zones of plate interaction in the southwest Pacific region.

Gold mineralisation at Bendigo is exclusively associated with quartz reefs, commonly found within or near anticlinal fold hinges. The gold is typically coarse grained (0.5 mm to 5 mm), free milling and displays a complex, nuggetty distribution within the veins. This ore is highly amenable to gravity recovery processes. As the Bendigo operation is not permitted to treat whole ore by a cyanide leach/CIL circuit, the flow sheet is more complex than conventional gold recovery circuits. Primary gold recovery is from a gravity circuit closing the grinding circuit to a bulk gravity concentrate and from a flotation circuit treating cyclone overflow to a bulk float concentrate. The plant capacity is relatively low by current gold industry standards at 600 000 tpa. Re-establishing gold production at Bendigo has presented several challenging, and sometimes competing, issues in process design and operation. The mine, process plant, associated services and infrastructure are at Kangaroo Flat, a low density, semi-rural zone in the southern urbanisation of the Bendigo metropolitan area. One of the main processing challenges during the design was the competing comminution requirement to avoid over-grinding, which would flatten or smear the characteristic nugget gold and hinder effective gravity gold recovery, whilst also providing sufficiently well liberated particles that would respond well to flotation. Important, non-metallurgical challenges were to minimise impacts on the local community from noise, dust, air emissions, visual impact, water egress and off-site traffic.

THE object of this paper is to discuss the fundamental principles of ball milling and to present some observations which have been made in laboratory and plant investigations. The discussion will be limited to wet grinding of ores in cylindrical mills, but doubtless many of the principles involved will be equally applicable in the other fields of fine grinding in which mills of the same type are used. In the concentrators of the United States there are about 650 ball, rod, or pebble mills, operating or ready to operate, and these have about 100,000 connected horsepower. For grinding in cement plants there is about three times this connected horsepower, and other industries have an unestimated amount, all used for the general type of grinding that is to be discussed here. It is true that these figures do not represent stupendous amounts of power, but when one considers that ball milling is often the "bottle neck" in a concentrator and that it often accounts for the largest single item in the cost sheet, the importance of a compre-hensive understanding of the principles of ball milling can be appreciated. Much of the past literature devoted to the subject has been concerned with the Kick-Rittinger dispute over evaluating grinding, or with dissertations on ball paths and the closely allied impact versus attrition hypotheses, or with the exclusive consideration of certain specific varia-bles, such as mill speed or circulating load, irrespective of the other factors in operation. Such subjects may be dismissed with but little discussion in what may be called, by comparison, a new philosophy in the study of ball milling. Briefly, this "new philosophy" consists of using power as an index of the mill operation, and investigating grind-ing from the standpoint of set and induced variables, with emphasis on the latter.

In a country richly endowed in mineral wealth, Climax Arintco Mining Corporation's ICAMC) Dinkidi porphyry Au-Cu deposit in Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines, represents the most significant mineral discovery in this country in recent times. The deposit is located within a belt of young intrusive and volcanic rocks in the Sierra Madre mountain chain of north Luzon, a region previously unassociated with porphyry -style mineralisation.Since 1989, drilling of the Dinkidi deposit has outlined a resource of 124 million tonnes of 1.0 g/t gold and 0.4 per cent copper. Regional exploration throughout CAMC's 37 000 hectare FTAA has identified a further 16 potential porphyry-related deposits.

A presente pesquisa investigou a eficiência dos filmes de polipirrol (PPy) eletrodepositados potenciostaticamente em meio aquoso contendo os Ácidos: Dodecil Benzeno Sulfônico (DBSA) ou p-Toluenossulfônico (pTS) na proteção da Liga de Alumínio 2024 contra a corrosão. Ensaios de Polarização Potenciodinâmica e Voltametria Cíclica obtidos em NaCl demonstraram significativa proteção do Alumínio 2024 quando revestido pelos filmes de PPy/pTS, em detrimento do Sistema PPy/DBSA que sofre o processo irreversível de overoxidação. A Morfologia dos filmes avaliada por Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) indicaram que o Sistema PPy/pTS é mais homogêneo e uniforme, quando comparados aos filmes de PPy/DBSA, que apresentaram defeitos estruturais que justificam a menor performance desses filmes na proteção do metal contra a corrosão.

Pillar recovery has been associated with nearly one third of roof fall fatalities in underground coal mines during the past decade. Safe pillar recovery requires global stability and local stability. Global stability is addressed primarily through pillar design. The local stability risk factors include cut sequence, the final pillar stump, supplemental supports (timbers vs. Mobile Roof Supports (MRS)), roof bolting, and many others. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has evaluated each of these factors through field research and analysis of accident statistics. The paper discusses design methods and technologies that have been transferred to the mining community and implemented.

IT SEEMS unnecessary to dwell upon the advantages of the modern pipe still as compared with the older type of distillation equipment used by oil refiners. The relatively low installation cost, coupled with remarkable operating efficiencies of pipe stills, precludes the consideration of other types except in rare instances where some peculiarity of product or plant may have an influence. The question of the actual heat required to distil petroleum is quite involved. We have extensive data on the latent heats of the various hydrocarbons under different conditions of pressure. We also have information regarding the specific heats of various oils and the effect of temperature thereon. Because of the complexity of petroleum and of each fraction, it seems impossible to theoretically analyze the partial-pressure effect of the great number of hydrocarbons upon one another during distillation. If a distillation curve and percentage analysis of any crude or product are available, it is possible to construct a curve with ordinates representing per cent. distilled and B. t. u. per pound or per gallon, or other desired unit. To do so the crude is split into fractions, of 5 or 10 per cent. The boiling point and gravity of each fraction being determined, it is possible to evaluate the heat required. As each fraction is removed, the residue must be raised to a higher temperature and latent heat supplied for the successive fraction. As the calculations progress, the latent heats decrease while the specific heats increase. Such a curve is illustrated by Fig. 1 for a typical 39.9 B° North Texas crude.

The Emerald Mine No. 1, located in southwestern Pennsylvania is presently owned and operated by Cyprus Minerals of Englewood, Colorado. High volatile bituminous coal is produced from the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam by both longwall and continuous mining methods. The coal is then mechanically cleaned on site utilizing a combination of heavy media separation and froth flotation methods prior to shipment to both the metallurgical and steam coal markets. The Emerald Mine is presently producing 2.8 million raw tons per year, while liberating approximately 6.5 million ft per day of methane. In light of the methane liberation rate, ventilation requirements have been significant and have always received utmost priority and consideration. Figure 1 shows the locations of the current and proposed shafts. Emerald utilizes two Joy (Model M120-58-880) axial vane fans on shafts No. 1, No. 2R, No. 3R. (one operational, one stand-by) The use of computer simulation of various ventilation networks was initially employed during the design stages (1975-1977) and has been utilized through the present. Obviously, the initial planning, under the ownership of Lykes Resources, was strictly theoretical. All the quantities were proposed and the resistances were based on prior simulations of other mines and mathematical formulas. However, once the mine was moderately developed, actual values were recorded and utilized. The impact of multi-seam mining on future mining, measures for ameliorating negative interaction effects, and future research needs are also discussed.

Thoresby Colliery is in the process of recovering an old roadway that was flooded following the closure of an adjacent mine. The aim is to re-use the roadway as a gate road for a longwall retreat panel and it is therefore important to establish the condition of the existing rockbolt support during the recovery operation. Two NDT methods, ultrasonics and RMT's newly developed RF (Radio Frequency) system were used in combination to interrogate the rockbolts to determine their condition. This paper describes the condition of the rockbolt supports, the NDT methods used and the problems that had to be overcome to successfully apply the two methods.
