The American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was the first American technical organization to consider steel-rail specifications and sections. If I am not mistaken, the first contribution on those subjects to the Proceedings of the Institute was presented by Prof. Thomas Egleston, in 1874, and was entitled "Investigations on Iron and Steel Rails made in Europe in the Year 1873.1" The next contribution was Dr. C. B. Dudley's report of his investigation for the Pennsylvania Railroad of the wear of steel rails in their tracks, in 1878, which contribution led to a very memorable discussion that extended through several meetings.2 In 1880, Mr. C. P. Sandberg3 presented an article on rail specifications and inspection and rail sections. This was followed, in 1881, by A. L. Holley,4 in his exhaustive report on the then used American rail sections. The next contribution, I believe, was made by myself' at the Buffalo meeting, in 1888, on steel-rail specifications, which I followed,6 in 1889, by a paper on steel-rail sections. Since that time there have been numerous contributions to the Transactions of the Institute in relation to the manufacture of steel rails. The American Society of Civil Engineers officially took up the investigation of the relation of rail sections to the wear of car wheels in 1888. In the prosecution of this work, the Society appointed a special committee, whose labors extended through several years and resulted in an exhaustive report to the Society in 1893.7 Later, another committee was appointed to consider specifications for the manufacture of steel rails; the labors of this committee extended over a period of several years, a final report8 being made in 1910. It was my fortune to be the secretary of both of those committees.

The western Cordillera of North America, including more than 99% of Alaska, is made up of an agglomeration of litho-tectonic terranes, some of which have undergone large rotations and (or) translations. The larger terranes can be broadly grouped into a small number of composite terranes based on affinities in their lithology, structure, and tectonic evolution. The terranes reflect repeated episodes of marginal rifting as well as formation of marginal arcs, island arc chains, back-arc basins, and oceanic plateaus since late Proterozoic time. Accretion to the continental margin occurred mainly from Middle Triassic through Early Cretaceous time. Major northward dispersal of terranes was largely during the existence of the Kula plate from about 85-55 Ma. Major rotations are the mid-Cretaceous opening of the Arctic Ocean basin with counterclockwise rotation of Arctic Alaska and Laramide oroclinal bending of western Alaska. The present complex Cordilleran geology along the northeast Pacific rim is a sum of these earlier accretionary processes together with continued Cenozoic faulting and deformation that has been superimposed upon the agglomerated displaced terranes over a broad segment of the continental margin.

DEVELOPMENT at Steep Rock lake has given rise to renewed interest in the geology of the iron ore deposits in the Lake Superior Region and has implications of no small moment bearing upon methods of exploration in the Precambrian Shield generally. Following upon the Regional Lake Superior meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers in August, 1941, the authors prepared a paper on the Steep Rock deposits, which appeared in the A.I.M.E. publication, Mining Technology, for January, 1943. Between Januar7 and April, 1943, exploration at Steep Rock was continued by means o vertical, Mesabi-type churn-drill holes put down from the ice. This drilling has enlarged the tonnage of ore previously known and has disclosed further facts relating to the origin of the ore. The added evidence, we believe, goes to support the hypothesis that the deposits were formed by a process of replacement due to upward-moving, iron-bearing solutions which came in as igneous after-effects. Accordingly, in presenting the subject to the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, it seems best not to change our first explanation, but to prefix the original paper with an interpretation of the results of the more recent explorations completed after its publication.

It is recognized that ingot structure is important in determining the quality of finished steel. Such elements of ingot structure as the size, shape and distribution of primary crystals; the size, shape and distribution of shrinkage cavities; the degree and kind of segregation (both macro and micro); the distribution of nonmetallic impurities and gas cavities are each the result of solidification phenomena. 'These structural features vary with variations in ingot practice. Their control requires a knowledge of their correlation with the variables of ingot practice. The structures of full-sized commercial steel ingots have been studied extensively by the Steel Ingots Committee of the Iron and Steel Institute.l This work has contributed much to our knowledge of ingot structure and the factors that control it. These investigations of necessity have been limited in scope because of their costliness and the great amount of time required. Studies of the structure of small steel ingots have not been very satisfactory because of the rapid rate of freezing of the ingots. Their structures are thus difficult to resolve and to interpret. Medium sizes of steel ingots in the ranges of 150 to 500 lb. do offer opportunity for study, but their cost also becomes greater and their use less expeditious. Experimental models for the study of steel-ingot structure have been made of nonferrous metals. Gathmann2 used lead-tin alloys and reported that they were satisfactory for determination of the location of the major shrinkage cavities and the Liplanes of weaknessv resulting from the pattern of crystallization. Certain features of mold design have been illustrated by these results. Bezdenezhnihk3 has used copper and aluminum ingots similarly and has shown the effect of mold-wall thickness on the depth of columnar grains. These studies of nonferrous models have been useful, but their results have been limited because the analogy with steel ingots obviously is not a close one. Model wax ingots have also been useful in pointing out important features of mold design. Gathmann4 watched the solidification of wax ingots, through a glass-walled mold, and has reported the effects of mold type on the location of the shrinkage cavities. Segregation was simulated by using a mixture of paraffin and stearine and adding a red dye that on freezing segregated preferentially to the stearine. Brearley5 also used wax models to determine the effects of some of the principal features of mold design. Carlsson and Hultgren6 dsed stearic acid to show that the columnar crystals of ingots tend to slope upward progressively from the mold wall toward the center of the ingot. The purpose of this U.S. Bureau of Mines study was to determine the material stiffness properties of the gob for use in numerical models of rock mass response to longwall mining. Photographs of actual mine gob were used to approximate particle size gradations of gob material. The gradation curve was shifted down to a laboratory scale, and 20 uniaxial compression tests were conducted on simulated gob material from 3 different rock types. The study found that the nonlinear stress-strain curves obtained from the three materials were similar, and could be represented in terms of moduli as follows: Es = 2.36s + 1,360 (1) Et = 0.00181s2 + 9.33s + 294 (2) where Es = secant modulus, psi Et = tangent modulus, psi and, s = stress level (due to overburden), psi. These curves correlated well with the theoretical solution curves developed by Salamon. Other effects on gob behavior were attributable to these studied factors including void ratio, thickness-to-width shape ratio, and rock compressive strength. The generated equations should provide numerical modelers with a practical means of estimating gob modulus as a function of stress level.

"This Bureau of Mines publication presents a statistical analysis of official U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) metal and nonmetal mine fire reports from 1950 through 1984, plus accounts of selected nonreportable fires (less than 30 min and no injury) and opinion data on fire hazards from mine safety directors. Fires were analyzed by time trends, ore type, ignition source, burning substance, location in mine, equipment involved, means of detection, duration, number of injuries and fatalities, mining method, and successful extinguishing agent. The leading ignition sources were electricity in underground fires and engine heat in reported surface fires. The most frequent burning substance was combustible liquids for all nonreportable fires, reported surface fires, and reported underground fires from 1978 to 1984. For underground fires reported prior to 1978, timber was the leading burning substance. Mobile equipment was the type most frequently involved in both underground and surface fires. Underground fires occurred most often in haulageway or drift areas, and reported surface fires occurred most often in plant and mill buildings, while most nonreportable surface fires occurred in other areas. The most common methods of extinguishment were water hose lines for reported fires and dry chemical handportable extinguishers for nonreportable fires. INTRODUCTIONIn support of the Bureau of Mines research on mine fire protection, two separate baseline studies on mine fire incidents have been prepared. The first study addressed coal mine fires. The results of that study are summarized in the Bureau's Information Circular 8830, ""A Statistical Analysis of Coal Mine Fire Incidents in the United States From 1950 to 1977."" This second report, addressing metal and nonmetal mine fires, is the companion to IC 8830. Together, these two reports provide a comprehensive, factual summary of the mining industry's fire experience.This report, like IC 8830, covers (1) MSHA fire incident reports, (2) records of nonreportable fires (less than 30 min and no injury), and (3) mine safety directors' opinions on fire hazards. The MSHA fire reports provide the most reliable, objective, and accurate historcial record of the major noncoal mine fires that occurred during the study period (1950 through 1984). However, MSHA fire reports alone understate the true magnitude of the fire problem because metal and nonmetal mines have been legally required to report fires to MSHA only since 1968. Although some fires were reported prior to 1968, doubtless a great many were not. Also, the reporting regulations that took effect in 1968 specify that only fires lasting 30 min or longer or involving an injury need to be reported. MSHA fire reports are thus limited in scope by MSHA's legal authority. In order to provide a more comprehensive data base, it was also necessary to gather and analyze mine company records of nonreportable fires."

The mining of seams in close proximity can greatly accentuate interaction problems. At distances of less than 110 feet vertically interaction can occur for both over and under mining. Research into ground control problems resulting from undermining a previously mined seam has been carried out using finite element and body-loaded photoelastic modeling methods in conjunction with numerous case studies. Analysis of field data was used to validate and expand the model results. Research findings demonstrate situations under which the worst ground control conditions can be expected to occur for a specified geologic environment, depth, innerburden spacing and mining geometry. Special emphasis has been placed on the effects of pillar load transfer on the lower seam in terms of pillar and floor stability and roof control. Roof and floor condition indexes are used to summarize structural and lithologic conditions in the affected seam. The effects of joint orientation and continuity are incorporated in the analysis and the research results have been compiled into a software package for application by the field engineer.

Microwave energy has been in use for variety of applications for over 50 years. These applications include communication, food processing, wood drying, rubber vulcanization, medical therapy, polymers, etc. In the last two decades microwave heating has been also applied very effectively and efficiently to heat and sinter ceramic materials. Microwave heating is recognized for its various advantages, such as: time and energy saving, very rapid heating rates, considerably reduced processing cycle time and temperature, fine microstructures and improved mechanical properties, better product performance, etc. The most recent application of microwaves has been in the field of metallic materials for sintering, brazing/joining and melting. Several common steel compositions, pure metals and refractory metals have been sintered in microwaves to nearly full density with improved mechanical properties. Many commercial powder-metal components of various alloy compositions including iron and steel, copper, aluminum, nickel, Mo, Co, Ti, W, Sn, etc., and their alloys have also been sintered in microwaves producing better properties than their conventional counterparts by using a 2.45 GHz multimode microwave system. This work has been further extended to join and braze bulk metal pieces, especially super alloy based turbine blades. Further, in a specially designed microwave cavity, even the bulk metals can be made to couple with the microwave field and melted. The implications of these findings are obvious in the field of powder metal technology.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a computerized mathematical model to predict the distribution of accessory elements throughout a metallurgical process. The model can be used to determine process conditions that effect better accessory element control consistent with continued high primary metal recovery. The model presented is specific for determining the bismuth distribution in lead smelting but can be adapted to most extractive metallurgical processes. Thermodynamic, kinetic, and process parameters form the base for the model. Its logic and structure are described in detail.

THe conversion of the beehive coke plants, in this country, to byproduct plants has been slow, because the coal supplies were near the centers of the steel industry. With the growth of this industry, especially with its development around Chicago, it became necessary to transport large tonnages of coal from the eastern districts and then convert it into coke. The losses due to transportation costs were partly offset by the value of the byproducts recovered. To save the transportation costs, it was desirable that the coal deposits of Indiana and Illinois be utilized. This coal had always been classified as non-coking; it was also considered unsuitable for the metallurgical field because of the high ash and sulfur contents. The conditions, however, were promising enough to start experimental and development work, which crystallized in the design of the Roberts coke oven. The fundamental features of most coke ovens, with respect to the application of heating gas and the recovery of byproducts, are the same and, in the last few years, the tendency has been toward the better application of heating to the walls, higher thermal efficiency, and, by the control of heating conditions, the increase of byproduct yields. Structural features also have been improved and the use of high-grade refractory material has allowed the use of higher temperatures with the resulting higher rated capacity per oven per day. Great improvements have been made in both recuperators and regenerators, particularly with reference to the individualizing of each oven with respect to its adjacent oven, so that each can be operated as a unit if desired. The highest development of the flue type of oven has been applying individual regenerators for the recovery of waste heat. After some research work, it was found that the high-volatile Illinois coals could be utilized for coke by obtaining the better application and control of the heating conditions in the oven. Most of this high-volatile coal that had been used gave a good coke structure under certain conditions. ABOUT fifty pages of Henry M. Howe's profound treatise, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," are devoted to twinning with special reference to the origin, nature and general significance of the Neu-mann bands in ferrite. Howe believed with Osmond and Cartaud1 that the Neumanns are mechanical twins and his careful observations leave no doubt that these straight-sided narrow bands habitually occur parallel to trapezohedral planes of form {211}. Attempts to develop the structure of the bands by various methods so that their identity could be established beyond question have not been conspicuously successful. Howe thought that they deflected slip bands. Some of the etching figures which have been developed within and adjacent to Neumann bands support the contention that they are twins. A good example of this effect in ferrite containing 0.6 per cent. of nickel and 1.3 per cent. of phosphorus, originally due to Harnecker and Rassow,2. was reproduced in the 1928 lecture before the Institute of Metals Division on twinning in metals.3 In this case, the sides of the figures might represent the traces of cubic planes laid bare by etching a properly oriented grain of ferrite, twinned along a plane of form 12111. Our own observations in this direction may be represented by Fig. 1 which shows in a deeply etched cavity in the boundary region between a Neumann band and the original crystal two small crystal surfaces which resemble the faces meeting at a reentrant angle in the simple cube twinned along a bisecting plane of form {211} as sketched in Fig. 2. The paper presents a study on the oxidation of polymetallic gold ore by oxygen in an autoclave. It presents optimum parameters of autoclave leaching of sulphide refractory ore in self-generated sulphuric acid solutions aiming to get products with favourable technological characteristics from which precious and other useful metals can be recovered. A high partial oxygen pressure (1.5 MPa to 2 MPa), high leaching temperature (190°C to 200°C), pulp density 80 g/L to 240 g/L, ore fraction size 76 µm and leaching time up to 4 hours yield good results in rich ores. The full extent of copper and zinc conversion as well as a high extent of iron conversion has been achieved, while lead, gold and silver and a minor part of iron remain as a solid residue among gangue minerals.

Horne, Acting Chairman of that committee. Motion was made by Dock Schloss that the report he accepted; seconded and carried. Oren Bridwell, Chairman of the Resolutions Committee, gave the following report: Resolved: That the members of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute in convention assembled, hereby ratify and confirm all official actions of the officers, the Executive Committee and other committees of the Institute between June 29, 1960, and the present time.

Following two years of laboratory research with bench scale reactors, a 9 m3 experimental process demonstration reactor was installed at Budelco's zinc refinery to treat their underlying groundwater. A 600-fold scale-up was successfully achieved. It has demonstrated that this anaerobic microbial process can remove a wide range of heavy metals and sulphate to the required levels. Extended operation of the demonstration unit has shown that the process is robust, can withstand wide variations in feed composition, rapidly recovers from operational upsets and is easy to start up and shut down. The metal sludge produced can be processed in a metal refinery to recover both metals and sulphur.

Sampling of the fluid from oil wells for percentages of oil, emulsified oil, and water during the last two years has brought out some interesting facts concerning oil-water emulsion. This result led to a laboratory investigation of emulsion, which substantiated the conclusions made from the field observations. The purpose of this paper is to present the information collected, the laboratory experiments, and our interpretation of the same. In order to define emulsified .oil exactly, give its synthesis and origin, and to show how and when it is formed in the wells, the work was necessarily divided into two separate lines—laboratory work and field observations. It is hoped that this study may lead to a discussion of such points so that the petroleum engineer, geologist, or technologist may be benefited by its practical bearing on oil-field management. Special credit is due Mr. Everett Carpenter, chief geologist of the Empire Gas & Fuel Co., for his assistance and cooperation in this work. Labobatory Investigations on Emulsified Oil Laboratory investigations were conducted in an attempt to learn the composition and some of the properties of emulsified oil, or B. S., as it is more commonly called, also to demonstrate, by laboratory methods, how B. 5. may be formed under conditions similar to those existing at the time a well is being pumped, and how it may be broken down. Literature bearing on this subject is widely scattered and very limited in scope. Bacon and Hamor define B. S., or bottom settlings, as "earthy matter, inert organic matter, or, in the case of Pennsylvanian petroleum, an emulsion of paraffin wax and water, which accompanies crude oil." In this discussion we will limit the term B. S. to that heavy, dark-brown emulsion, composed of a physical mixture of water, oil, and air with some included inert matter, either organic or inorganic.
