Antamina is a large open-pit copper and zinc mine located within the Central Andes of Northern Peru at an altitude of 4300 masl. The facilities are situated within the headwaters of several watersheds, within the Amazon basin. Nearby villages rely heavily on springs and streams for drinking and irrigation water. The principle source of baseflow during the dry season is from Cretaceous karstic limestone aquifers. Antamina will produce nearly 1.4 billion tonnes of waste rock over its mine life. Finding suitable sites for storing large volumes of waste rock is often a challenging task – especially in karstic, alpine terrain. Detailed hydrogeological investigations are essential for delineating the karstic hydrogeologic watersheds associated with the proposed waste facilities, which are often very different than topographic (hydrologic) watersheds. Contamination vulnerability mapping at Antamina consisted of geological and karst mapping, geophysical surveys, geochemical testing, dye-tracer studies, drilling and aquifer testing. Detailed mapping followed by dye-tracer studies proved to be the most cost-effective methods for characterizing the karst aquifer systems. The results were used to optimize waste rock management at the site to minimize potential impacts on groundwater resources.

A new hydrometallurgical process for the production of refined gold and the recovery of palladium and platinum from silver anode slimes has recently been developed and installed at the, CCR Division of Noranda Inc. The process, which facilitates the production of gold of >99.99% purity in the face of increasing palladium receipts comprises; leaching silver anode slimes with hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide at 95°C to solubilize gold, palladium, platinum and base metals while simultaneously rejecting silver as insoluble silver chloride; precipitating gold from the leach solu¬tion with sulphur dioxide gas in two stages to produce a first-stage high purity gold product and a second stage impure gold which is recycled to the leach; washing, melting and casting of the pure gold; precipitation of a palladium-platinum concentrate from the gold-free solution by reduction with sodium formate at pH 4 and 95°C; and neutralization of the palladium precipitation effluent to pH 10 with lime. The results of laboratory and pilot plant studies leading to the adop¬tion of this process are discussed, and data are presented for each of the unit operations. Details of the engineering of the commercial plant are given, and plant start-up experience is described.

The determination of the proper cutoff grade for an open pit metal mine is based on economic criteria and the operating philosophy of the mining company. Previous papers have dealt with the balance of a fixed mine production capacity versus economic return. Mine production capacity is often controlled by the amount of mining equipment and the working area in the pit. A complete cutoff grade strategy is a balance of economic return of mining higher grade material versus the capital costs of additional production capacity and the operating cost of moving the waste and low grade material to assure proper ore release. An approach to the problem is presented which is based in part on work by previous authors and provides guidelines to proper cutoff grade strategy encompassing the time value of money and variable commodity prices.

An accurate value of formation water resistivity R, is essential in calculating formation porosity and fluid saturation from electrical well logs. In the cases where R, has not been measured directly, it must be obtained from other data, e.g., the SP curve. This paper deals with another approach: how to calculate R, from the chemical analysis of the formation water. INTRODUCTION It is known that the resistivity of aqueous solutions of pure salts depends on their concentration and on the temperature; the concentrations are given in MPL (mg of solute per liter of solution), or sometimes in ppm (mg of solute per kg of solution): MPL = ppm X specific gravity. Values for different pure salts are available in the literature, but not for solutions of mixtures which are of practical interest. The major component of the dissolved material in almost all formation waters being sodium chloride, it is customary to express the resistivity of formation waters in terms of equivalent sodium chloride concentration, i.e., the concentration of a solution of pure NaCl which has the same resistivity at a given temperature as that of the formation water under consideration. Thus, the problem of calculating R, from the chemical anaylsis can also be stated as how to convert the other constituents of the solute into equivalent NaCl concentration. Salts dissolved in water are at least partly dissociated into ions, and do not conserve their identity. If known amounts of several salts are dissolved in water, the solution does not necessarily contain the same salts in the original proportion, but perhaps some other combination of the ions, along with free ions in solution. This is why the chemical analysis of formation waters is often given in terms of ions, as if all dissolved salts were completely dissociated. Our problem then boils down to how to convert the concentrations of the various ions to equivalent concentrations of Na' and C1-. Dunlap and Hawthorne' have proposed to convert the concentration of all other ions to equivalent Na' and C1-concentrations by means of constant multipliers; e.g., 0.95 for Ca"; 2.0 for Mg"; 0.27 for HCO 3-; 0.5 for SO, -, etc. Their factors were based on measurements made at 68F on 26 formation water samples from the Texas Gulf Coast, ranging in concentration from 1,500 to 75,000 ppm. The Dunlap method is widely used in electric log interpretation, and is often extrapolated beyond its original concentration range. A comparison of R, values calculated by this method and values actually measured on formation water samples has shown large discrepancies, especially at higher concentrations. Therefore, two new methods were developed at Sinclair Oil Corp.'s Tulsa Research Center to calculate equivalent sodium chloride concentration from the chemical analysis of formation water samples. FUNDAMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS The resistivity of a solution, or its reciprocal the conductivity, at a given temperature is determined by the charge, concentration and mobility of the ions actually present. Monovalent ions such as Na' or C1- always carry the same charge. Compounds of polyvalent ions, however. may show incomplete dissociation, e.g., NaSO; + Na' instead of SO,-- + 2Na'. This happens especially in more concentrated solutions. Only very dilute solutions are completely dissociated, as assumed in the chemical analysis report. At higher concentration, the degree of dissociation depends not only on the nature and concentration of the particular salt under consideration but also on the nature and concentrations of the other solutes. Mobility of the ions depends on the viscosity of the solution. It also depends on the degree of hydration of the ions, which in turn is a function of the nature and the charge of the ions and also of the amount of free water available per ion, i.e., the total ionic concentration. The net effect is that the conductivity increases slower than proportional to the concentration, even if a solution contains only one salt such as NaC1, and is different for different salts (Fig. 1). Conductivity can even decline with a further increase in concentration, e.g., if additional salt is little dissociated but ties up some of the free water and/or causes an increase in viscosity. In solutions containing more than one salt, the contribution of one salt to the total conductivity depends not only on the fractional concentration of this same salt, but also on the concentration of all other solutes. A perfect method would give the conductivity or resistivity of a solution as a function of the concentrations of all solutes present. This is so complicated as to be impractical, and a simpler method must be found which is of acceptable accuracy. The thiosulfate leaching of gold generally requires the presence of a catalyst such as cupric tetraammine, Cu(NH3)42+, to obtain reasonable leaching rates and gold extractions. Unfortunately, this same catalyst that accelerates gold leaching also tends to accelerate thiosulfate oxidation to tetrathionate and other species. It is therefore imperative that a detailed understanding of the role of this catalyst and the factors affecting it is obtained. It is equally important for plant application that a method of assessing the catalyst be developed. In this work the role of the cupric tetraammine catalyst was studied using geochemical modeling for speciation prediction, thiosulfate leaching of gold ores, and chemical analyses of resulting leach solutions. It was found that the variables of pH, temperature, and the concentrations of ammonia, thiosulfate, and total copper all work in concert to affect the concentration of the cupric tetraammine species. It was also found that the presence of sufficient thiosulfate and cupric tetraammine was critical to the success of the leach.

It is a real pleasure to attend another meeting of the Institute. This is partly because I am a Westerner by birth and training. As a young man I had personal experience with firing Colorado and Wyoming coals. The coal industry of the United States has done an outstanding job of producing coal. We can all be proud of the industry's record of continuously adopting technical improvements in coal mining. NEED FOR MORE EFFECTIVE COAL MARKETING However, it cannot be said that the industry has done an equally good job of marketing coal. There has been a rapid growth in U. S. population, and an even greater expansion of industrial demands for heat and power. Yet coal consumption for the past several years has been no greater than it was 40 years ago, in 1912 and 1913.

The objectives of this study were to (1) document the hydrologic impacts of longwall mining on ground water, (2) identify the factors which affect the extent of dewatering, and (3) develop empirical trends to predict the extent of dewatering and recovery in advance of mining. The study was confined to three mine sites in north-central West Virginia. At each site, available ground water supplies were identified and monitored for dewatering effects and recovery. Mine A, located in Upshur County, West Virginia, has relatively thin overburden (approximately 715-280 feet). At this site domestic water supplies and specially constructed monitoring wells were monitored, continuing with an earlier study done by Cifelli arid Rauch. Most such supplies were completely dewatered over the longwall panel. Some of these wells have shown significant recovery, especially near a stream. Extensive monitoring of two nested piezometer wells revealed that dewatering generally started in advance of undermining in the lowermost monitored overburden zones first and then progressed upwards. Most dewatered wells completed in bedrock have shown no recovery, except. for valley drilled wells located within 100 feet of a Stream. Affected dug wells completed in valley alluvium rend located within 200 feet. of the nearest stream have shown significant recovery. Some wells have partially collapsed following mine subsidence. Mine B, having relatively thick overburden (approximately 585 to 900 feet), is located in Monongalia County, West Virginia. Ground water supply surveys have been conducted there in an attempt to study past dewatering effects. Owners reported Chat several wells were dewatered by longwall mining arid vertical air shafts that preceded longwall mining. Dewatered wells over longwall panels hove shown some recovery within 3 ½ years of mining. Mine C also has relatively thick overburden (approximately 585-900 feet), and is located mostly in Greene County, Pennsylvania. In addition to a survey of domestic water supplies at this site, five specially constructed monitoring wells were tested. The shallow monitoring wells suffered drops in water level due to mining but totally recovered within one day to three weeks after dewatering occurred. However, they did occasionally exhibit partial collapse during mine subsidence. Subsidence fracturing was beneficial in increasing the lateral hydraulic conductivity by a factor of about S to 22 for rock strata located within 124 feet of the surface, indicating enhanced shallow aquifer potential. One deep well suffered both partial dewatering and structural damage, with the state of water recovery bring uncertain. Also, two shallow domestic supplies out of five located over the mine were reportedly dewatered, but this claim could not, be substantiated.

As a study to establish a new energy-saving copper recycling process, the copper deposition at a cathode and oxidation of copper(I) at an anode from ammoniacal alkaline solutions containing Cu(I) or Cu(II) were investigated in order to examine the feasibility of electrolysis in this solution.. The current efficiencies were greater than 95% in the current density range of 200 to 1000 A m-2. The current efficiency decreased with the increasing Cu(II) concentration and temperature. In the batch-type electrolysis at the anode, during the initial stage, the current efficiencies were 100%, and the anode potentials ranged from 0 to 0.15V vs. SHE at a current density of 100 A m-2. During the subsequent stage, the current efficiency decreased with time, and the anode potential was around 1.35V vs. SHE where oxygen evolution at the anode surface was observed. As a result, the present electrolytic method can be the core technology in the said copper recycling process.

In order to deal with ground control problems such as roof falls, floor heaves and pillar failures in underground coal mines, a new pillar design method based on the "yield pillar" concept is proposed. Using the finite element model simulation, the functions and mechanisms of the "yield pillar" are studied. The important variables that affect the stability of longwall entry-pillar system are identified. To simplify the geological and mining conditions, a new pillar design method classifies the in-situ roof and floor conditions into four categories: 1) strong roof and strong floor, 2) strong roof and weak floor, 3) weak roof and strong floor, and 4) weak roof and weak floor conditions. The design formulae are derived based on the finite element model simulation, stability study and nonlinear regression analysis. The finite element models used consider the plastic failure properties and time-dependent behaviors of rock. To better organize the finite element model simulation, the orthogonal experiment design is used to arrange the finite element models and proved to be very effective. An application example is used to illustrate the basic design procedures involved in the new pillar design method.

The last few years have produced new methods of characterizing flow properties of bulk solids. Abrasive wear and particle attrition can now be accurately measured in a laboratory and scaled up to field condi¬tions. In addition, the effect of large par¬ticles on a material's flow properties (cohe¬sive strength, bulk density, wall friction) can be determined as well as the effects of var¬ious additives such as freeze conditioning agents. New developments have occurred with devices to improve the reliability of solids flow. Much attention has been paid to find¬ing ways, by using inserts, to provide a mass flow pattern with relatively shallow hopper walls. Such devices can also provide reli¬able in-bin gravity blending of bulk solids or completely nonsegregated discharge. Other developments have occurred in the area of belt-to-belt transfer chutes and sealing screws. The technology and hardware for running bench scale flow tests on bulk solids samples and transforming the results into reliable designs has been in existence for nearly 30 years (Jenike, 1964; Marinelli and Carson, 1986). It has been shown repeatedly that reliable materials handling systems can be designed to avoid the problems of no-flow due to arching or rat-holing, erratic flow, segregation, loss of capacity, or spontaneous combustion. Running flow properties tests and carefully designing a bulk handling system are not expensive, particularly when compared to downtime costs and continual flow problems. New developments in characterizing flow properties of bulk solids include: • a shear tester for measuring the properties of run-of-mine ores containing large par¬ticles; • attrition testers to simulate a wide range of flow conditions; • a tester to measure the wear rate of liners in bins, feeder parts, etc.; • a dustiness tester to measure the potential for dust and the effect of dust control meas¬ures; and • techniques for measuring the strength of frozen ores and the effect of freeze condi¬tioning agents. In the area of improving the flow of bulk solids, there are new techniques for ensuring reliable flow without using up excessive headroom. These include: • belt-to-belt transfer chutes to handle po¬tentially sticky, abrasive, and dusty ores; • designs for the interface between a bin/ hopper and apron or belt feeders to avoid hangups and minimize feeder loads; methods to feed solids reliably into a pres¬surized process; and designs for handling systems that will mini¬ mize attrition, avoid segregation, or auto¬matically blend materials together. Characterizing flow properties Large shear cell It has long been known that the cohesive strength of a bulk solid is due mainly to its fine fraction. However, the effect of the larger particles (that were assumed to re¬duce the strength) could not be measured. The development of larger scale (205 mm¬diam and 0.6 x 0.9 m or 8 in.-diam and 2 x 3 ft) shear testers has made it possible to measure the properties of a wider range of materials. Now cohesive strength measurements can be made with up to 100 mm (4 in.) particles. The results obtained from the large shear testers, together with the results of the nor¬mal shear tests on the fine fraction, are used in the design of reliable stockpile reclaim systems and crusher feed systems. A high percentage of large particles can reduce the measured shear strength of a bulk solid. However, segregation may alter the size distribution and should therefore be considered (Carson, Royal, and Goodwill, 1986). In addition, larger particles will

INTRODUCTION The trend in the coal industry for many years has been to make every- thing "bigger and faster." This also holds true for loading and storage facilities. Where once a 1 million st per yr (910,000 mt/yr) mine was rare, 3-5 million st per yr (2,730,000-4,550,000 mt/yr) mines are not uncommon today in the bituminous industry. This great increase in production, made possible through mechanization, requires greatly improved loading facilities just to get the coal away from the mine. Also, there is a trend to- ward combining production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant. In addition to increased loading capacity, this frequently necessitates raw-coal storage and blending facilities. The development of the unit train with its attendant economics has contributed more than any other factor to the widespread construction of storage and high-speed loading facilities. The European Commission published its Communication of the Thematic Strategy on the sustainable use of natural resources ("Resource Strategy") on 21 December 2005. The Resource Strategy aims at reducing environmental impacts associated with resource use - called decoupling - in a growing European economy and worldwide. The impacts of unsustainable resource use include e.g. climate change due to fossil fuel use, land use and environmental degradation due to mineral extraction and processing, or overexploitation of soil and fish stocks. To decouple environmental impacts from economic growth, a life-cycle approach is adopted. It means that the environmental impacts are taking into account at each stage of the life cycle of a resource, avoiding that negative impacts are shifted to other environmental media, to other stages of the life cycle, or to other countries. Key to achieving decoupling are three factors: - More value - creating more value while using fewer resources (?resource productivity?); - Less impact - reducing overall environmental impact per unit of resources used (through ?cleaner? technologies and consumption pat-terns); - Better alternatives - substituting currently used resources with better alternatives. The paper focuses on the implementation actions of the Resource Strategy in particular related to the minerals industry: 1. The Data Centre on natural resources; 2. Indicators to measure progress; 3. The involvement of economic sectors to take concrete actions; 4. EU Member States involvement, focusing on resource uses with the most significant impacts; 5. The International Panel on the sustainable use of natural resources, set up together with UNEP. With its 25 years time horizon and its wide approach the Resource Strategy will have a co-ordinating function to ensure enhanced coherence and efficiency. The challenge will be to integrate this approach into all policies and decision-making.

"In 1979 Chevron Standard Limited and Irving Oil Limited intersected a thick, high-grade sylvinite zone in the Windsor Group in the Chevron Irving Malagawatch No. I well in central Cape Breton. This well was the third and final hole of a program designed to evaluate a non-commercial oil discovery made by Chevron Standard's Mineral Staff in 1978 while carrying out base metal exploration. Nine holes were subsequently drilled to evaluate the significance of the potash discovery. The delineation drilling proved the Malagawatch structure to be complex with the potash zone showing erratic grade and thickness distribution. Based on the drill information the potash accumulation at Malagawatch is uneconomic, however, other salt ""structures"" in the Bras d'Or Basin may in time prove to have better potential.History of DiscoveryIn 1972 Cuvier Mines discovered the Gays River lead-zinc deposit (MacEachern and Hannon, 1974) which prompted Chevron Standard's Minerals Staff to carry out a study of the Windsor basins in Nova Scotia (Figs. I and 2). As a result of this program several carbonate-hosted lead-zinc prospects were identified in the basal Windsor carbonate; one of these was at Malagawatch on Cape Breton Island . In 1978, after preliminary exploration surveys, a diamond drill program commenced consisting of 5 BQ holes (Fig. 3), three of which tested the basal carbonate. Instead of the reefoid bank facies of the Gays River Formation (Giles et al., 1979), the favoured host for economic base metal mineralization, this carbonate was developed as a laminated, pelletoidal, lime packstone more characteristic of the facies equivalent Macumber Formation (Schenk, 1967). While drilling one of these holes, No. 3-78, oil scum was intermittently detected on the drilling mud. The hole was abandoned at 191 m in anhydrite, without having reached the basal limestone."

The occurrence of coarse gold particles leading to grade complexity and sampling challenges is a common feature of many gold deposits. Poorly designed sampling protocols applied to these deposit types can lead to an excessively high fundamental sampling error. Together with other errors, the fundamental sampling error contributes to the nugget effect. Proper sample collection, preparation and assay protocols are required to minimise this error, and hence reduce the total nugget effect. Reduction of the nugget effect is a key requirement for subsequent geostatistical resource estimates to be effective. A case study from the Nalunaq gold mine in Greenland is presented, which is characterised by notable quantities of coarse gold (>30 per cent +100 ¦m gold) hosted in quartz veins. Diamond drilling provides a good measure of gross geological continuity at practical grid spacings, but is not considered to represent the mineralisation effectively. On-reef development with face and bulk sampling, together with detailed geological studies were undertaken during the resource delineation phase. This contribution describes the nature of the Nalunaq deposit, its gold particle size characteristics, how sampling and assay protocols were developed (including QA/QC issues), application of GyÆs sampling theory and its calibration, and how the data was subsequently applied to grade estimation.

In looking into the crystal-ball scene of minerals beneficiation for 1970 and beyond, an impartial observer becomes con- fused as to what has been done and what is possible in the way of improvements. The mining official must balance the burden which is being shouldered by the mineral industry for maintaining our environment in its pristine state on one hand, with the solid advancements made in technology and cost savings on the other hand. Then the official wonders if this is really the criterion for judging overall performance today. As a prospective engineer, Dave Bolles sees it this way: "Specialization has caused many engineers to subordinate everything to doing their job the cheapest and fastest way. In the future this won't be enough. The engineer in the mineral industry will be responsible not only for mining, concentrating and smelting, but also for the resultant wastes- the mine dumps, the tailing dams and the slag piles." "In this study, reduction of iron ore pellets was carried out at 800-950°C by simulating the atmosphere of typical coal gasification gas. The effects of temperature, gas composition and reduction degree on swelling were investigated respectively. Reduction degree was obtained according to the weight loss records. And volume changes of pellets during reduction were evaluated by infrared photography. Results showed that the pellet swelling increased with temperature and decreased slightly with hydrogen content in the reducing gas. The swelling peaked when reduction degree reached about 40% and then decreased to be stable finally. The microstructures of pellets during reduction were examined by reflected light microscope and relatively rational explanations were proposed for their swelling behaviors.PrefaceDirect reduction iron is an important and indispensable raw material for high-purified and high-quality steel in the electric furnace smelting. Gas-based shaft furnace direct reduction process has very strong competitative ability; however, this technique requires natural gas as reducing agent, so its development has been restricted by gas source and area. Compared with gas-based reduction method, coal based reduction method has the disadvantages of higher production cost and lower productivity. In China, coal resources are abundant and coal gasification technology is mature, and the development of coal gasification shaft furnace direct reduction process is promising. [1] The gasification methods of fixed bed method (Lurgi method), fluidized bed method (Undok method), airflow bed method (Texaco coal water slurry method and Shell dry powder coal method) have been put into use successfully. These syngas generated by different methods can meet the actual production requirement of shaft furnace. However, the compositions of the effective reduction gas in the syngas are quite different. The ratios of hydrogen and carbon monoxide (H2/CO) of Undok or Shell coal gas, Texaco coal gas and Lurgi coal gas are 0.4, 0.6~ 1.0 and 1.6~2.3, respectively. [2] In the coal gas direct reduction process, the swelling behavior of iron ore pellets is various due to the differences of the gas composition, reduction temperature and reduction degree, and it seriously affects the normal operation ofDRI production. [3-9] Therefore, the research on the swelling behavior and its mechanism of iron ore pellets in direct reduction were carried out in this paper."

Al-Ti master alloys were prepared by aluminothermic reduction between the dissolved titanium dioxide and aluminum in cryolite melts at 960oC. The kinetic analysis by differential scanning calorimetry indicated that the apparent activation energy of the reaction of reducing titanium dioxide by aluminium is 22.3 kJ/mol, and the reaction order is 0.5. The products were analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometer. Results from X-ray diffraction showed that the phase compositions of produced alloys are Al and Al3Ti. In addition, Al-Ti master alloys containing 2-6 mass% Ti were formed at different reduction time of 2-5h in aluminothermic reduction experiment.

THE dislocation theory of plastic flow originated in 1928, when Prandtl1 suggested that the internal damping of metals of plastic origin might arise from the motion of a crystalline imperfection. Following this, Dehlinger2 employed a similar imperfection in a theory of recrystallization. The first detailed theoretical discussions were those of E. Orowan3 and G. I. Taylor4 in 1934. The resulting theory was gen- eralized by J. M. Burgers5 in 1939. Mott and Nabarro, in England, and Seitz and Read,6 in the United States, started an extensive examination of the atomic theory of dislocations in the period between 1939 and 1941. However, this development was arrested by the mar and was not taken up again until after 1945. Since 1946, the field has been the object of very intense activity, particularly in the United States and England. Dislocations are beautiful and intricate imperfections; they are sufficiently complicated to account for the great variety of phenomena encountered in the field of plastic flow. Above all, the dislocation concept enables us to understand how a metal or other plastic solid can deform inelastically under very small stresses at temperatures far below the melting point. IT IS usually assumed that chemical specifications are sufficient for steel to be used for case carburizing, and if the steel analyzes within the ordinary limits specified for steel for this purpose, no difficulty traceable to the steel used should be encountered in obtaining satisfactory results in the case carburizing and hardening. Much work has been done to determine the effect of various alloying elements on the rate of carbon penetration, etc. but, to our knowledge, little if anything has been published in regard to the effect of the quality of the steel on the final results in the hardening of case-carburized steel parts. The writers believe that the structure of the case both before and after quenching is greatly affected by the actual condition of the steel itself as made, and that for good results in the case-carburizing and hardening departments, the steel should be of the best possible quality as regards non-metallic impurities. It is the purpose of this paper to prove that the presence of excess dissolved oxides in the steel, as made in the melting furnace, affects permanently the results obtained in carburizing and hardening and that it is possible that the presence of dissolved oxide can result in total unfitness of low-carbon steel for, case hardening purposes. When races and rolls for roller bearings are made from a low-carbon steel, case carburized and hardened, it is of primary importance that the results of this treatment be of the highest quality. It is necessary, therefore, that in the case-carburizing work each detail be rigorously checked to avoid any defects which would cause the loss of much time and material. The case carburizing with which this paper deals was done in under-fired oil furnaces. The temperature of each furnace is controlled by means of a platinum platinum-rhodium thermocouple, in connection with a potentiometer indicator and potentiometer recorder. The temperature of each furnace is registered every 15 min. by an operator, who is continually checked by the automatic recorders.
