The Boddington Gold Mine (BGM) is managed by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd (Worsley) and is located 110 km south-east of Perth, Western Australia. The gold mine, which has operated since mid-1987, was originally constructed to treat 3 Mtpa of gold bearing oxide ores, has subsequently been expanded to treat 7 Mtpa and is presently one of the largest gold producing operations in Australia.During 1990 a Supergene/Basement Plant was constructed to treat 250 000 tpa of copper supergene and hypogene ores and basement ores which contain significant gold grades and which are encountered at the lower levels of the existing oxide orebody. The SupergeneBasement Plant has the versatility to treat a wide range of ore types, producing both gold bullion and copper-gold concentrates. It is a stand-alone facility adjacent to the existing 7 Mtpa gold plant.

The Australian underground coal mining industry is undergoing major changes. This paper analyses the technologies presently being researched in mines, and discusses their utilisation as major contributors in the underground mining of coal in Australia over the next 20 years. It describes the problems that underground mining of the year 2000 will face and the possible solutions to those problems based upon results of present day research. Methods, equipment and organisational requirements are outlined. Developments in micro-electronics, computerisation and monitoring will require a new look into human resource development, education and training, and organisation to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The mining system's philosophies of the future are Outlined.

Ammonia - ammonium sulfate solutions were sparged in a glass reactor with a SO2/O2 gas mixture (2% SO2 and 98% O2) to leach copper from pure chalcopyrite and chalcopyrite concentrate. The SO2/O2 mixture produces higher and faster extractions than O2 by itself. The effect of temperature, particle size and free ammonia concentration was investigated. The fastest and highest recoveries were obtained at 80 oC from a chalcopyrite concentrate with a d80equal to 13 m, with about 83 gpl free ammonia, an average pH equal to 8.75 and a stirring speed of 500 rpm. The extraction process was controlled by diffusion through a product layer, according to the shrinking core model, with an activation energy of 41 kJ/mole.

The results of an investigation of the ternary system iron-chromium-silicon were reported in 1936 by the present authors.l Partly for the sake of theoretical interest, and partly because of the possible commercial importance of these alloys, the present investigation was undertaken to determine the effect of some of the commoner elements likely to occur, deliberately or otherwise, in such alloys if made on a commercial scale. The elements thus added were carbon, nickel or manganese. The alloys studied were, therefore, parts of quaternary systems. This investigation was concerned primarily with the effect of these additional elements on the alpha-iron phase and the boundary between this phase region and the alpha plus sigma two-phase region. The sigma phase is a ternary solid solution based upon the compound FeCr. The work was performed mainly by X-ray methods, but a number of microscopic examinations were also made and are reported. While isolated alloys in the composition ranges studied may have been discussed in metallurgical publications, no systematic investigation of any assistance to us was found. Of the earlier work, the investigations on the iron-chromium-carbon system and on the chromium carbides by Westgren and his coworkers2'3 enabled us to identify the carbide phase. Several articles appeared after the present experimental work had been completed. Lucas and Wintrup4 determined the solubility of carbon in molten iron-chromium-silicon alloys. Tofaute and his coworkers5'6 have made detailed studies of the iron-chromium-carbon system, which will be referred to later. In this work, strontium doped lanthanum ferrite (LSF) and their composite cathodes were fabricated by screen printing on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolytes. Their electrochemical properties were evaluated by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and steady-state polarization methods. All the cathodes were screened by comparing their total polarization resistances before and after activation processes at different temperatures. The improved LSF composite cathodes were also screen-printed on YSZ/NiO half cells to fabricate solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), which have reached the output power densities of 170 mW/cm2 at 650 °C, 230 mW/cm2 at 700 °C, 304 mW/cm2 at 750 °C and 388 mW/cm2 at 800 °C.

THE loading of bituminous coal mechan¬ically was recognized about the year 1900, but during the following 28 years less than 5 per cent of the bituminous pro¬duction in the United States was loaded by mechanical means. During the past i6 years, however, the usage of some form of mechanical loader has had a very rapid and accelerated growth, until at present production of bituminous coal by mechanical means has reached an all¬time high of approximately 46 per cent, and is still increasing. This rapid growth in the use of the mechanical loader has been supplemented by an increase in mechanical cleaning. The importance of mechanical cleaning of coal was recognized many years before the mechanical loader was introduced, because of the impossibility of cleaning manually the sizes below 2 in., and the increasing competition from other fuels. Utilization of mechanical loaders without mechanical cleaning on the surface for at least one or more sizes is the exception, rather than the rule. One exception is a mine that employs caterpillar-mounted mobile loaders exclusively, and mines the entire seam without any selectivity, and yet loads and ships six grades of coal of the very highest quality without mechanical cleaning. Such a fortunate situation can exist only where mining conditions are ideal, where top and bottom are exceptional and there are no impurity partings, and where there is loader height. The conversion from hand loading to mechanical loading has definitely intro¬duced many problems in the preparation plant of yesterday and in the modern streamline plant as well. Many of these problems have been solved by good, sound, conscientious initiative on the part of the plant personnel, with minor expendi¬tures; the solution taking the pattern of rearranging and improving the equipment at hand. Other problems have caused, and are causing, considerable concern and difficulty. LARGE IMPURITIES The removal of large quantities of large impurities from the lump coal, and their handling and disposal, is definitely a troublesome and costly problem. The cost of manually removing the impurities from the picking table alone, based on the actual recovered lump coal, can reach a cost of 42 cents per ton or more. In the design of future plants it would be wise to give this phase of preparation considerably more time and thought, particularly if the seam of coal contains one or more heavy partings and the mining procedure is all seam. This same caution applies to seams that may not contain heavy partings but have poor and heavy draw-slate top, which falls with the coal during the mining cycle. One of the more recent of the modern preparation plants has answered this problem by installing a rock crusher under the picking table in such a manner that the impurities can be diverted by gravity directly to the crusher. In seeking substitutes for such critical metals as chromium, cobalt, and nickel, the Bureau of Mines investigated techniques for shape-casting titanium in rammed sand molds. Castings were made in olivine, garnet, chromite, and, for comparison, zircon. It was found that commercial-grade castings up to 31 lb (maximum capacity of furnace) could be made in zircon or olivine molds if a zirconia mold wash was used. Castings up to 4 lb could be made in chromite molds, but heavier castings suffered from some mold-metal reaction. Garnet molds were found to be unsatisfactory for castings of all sizes because of gas blows and rough surfaces. In other tests shell castings of acceptable quality were produced in water-glass-bonded zircon and olivine molds up to weights of 8 lb, but chromite molds were unsatisfactory because rough casting surfaces were caused by mold-metal reaction. Unlike the currently used commercial processes, neither the rammed-sand nor the shell-molding processes developed by the Bureau of Mines generate noxious fumes at any step.

The Bureau of Mines sampled a gold-bearing schist series 50 miles east of Nome near Bluff, a dormant mining camp on the southern shore of the Seward Peninsula, Alaska. Gold is unevenly distributed through a section of a schist series that extends from the coast northward 4,500 feet. In this section the schists dip westward 20 to 38 degrees and have an outcrop width of about 1,000 feet and a normal width of about 500 feet. An intensely fractured zone within the schists averages 0.015 to 0.017 ounce of gold and 0.03 to 0.05 ounce of silver per ton for outcrop widths of 200 to almost 500 feet. The grade of the remainder of the schist series ranges downward to scant traces. Gold eroded from these schists collected in solution channels in metalimestones to form the Daniels Creek placers, which also extend from the beach southward under the sea for an unknown distance. The lode sources of the gold placers elsewhere in the southern Seward Peninsula may be similar schists that occupy a similar position in the metasedimentary series.

This paper deals with molybdenum modifications of 5140 steel that have the same hardenability but a better tolerance for phosphorus than the AISI-SAE 5140 grade. Lack of toughness in steels with higher than normal phosphorus contents is well known to metallurgists. This problem is troublesome even within normal phosphorus ranges, if the heat treatment or the design of the part or the service is critical. Under such unfavorable conditions and also in the case of phosphorus contents toward the upper side of the commercial range, the use of molybdenum to replace a part of the chromium in 5140 steel provides a factor of safety. The toughness of steel is variously exhibited in different mechanical tests; broadly the term is applied to the capacity of the steel to deform prior to fracture. Defined in this way, toughness is considered to be an inherent quality that depends upon the composition and structure of the steel, and also upon its temperature during deformation and fracture in the test. In the present state of our knowledge, the type of mechanical test needs to be included in any discussion of toughness, because the revelation of this quality in steel depends on the stress state and rate of stressing imposed by the test. In comparing the toughness of one steel with another by laboratory testing, it has long been customary to use notched tests that impose severe constmint to deformation, and then to test over a range of temperatures to obtain the so-called transition. At temperatures above the transition, the steel fails after considerable deformation and absorption of energy. Below the transition, less energy is absorbed as the steel fails largely by cleavage. The transition range itself is characterized by a more or less abrupt change in energy absorption and type of fracture. The conventional V-notch Charpy impact test has been used exclusively in the work covered by this report. For the steels under study, rather sharp transitions are obtained with this test, at testing temperatures that are easily obtained in the laboratory. The position of the transition on the testing temperature scale provides a rather sensitive index of the toughness of the steel, when the steels under study are similar in character as they are in this work. Turning to the metallurgical reasons for the greater toughness of one steel as compared to another, the authors propose to limit the discussion to the small field under study. Only one structural state is considered, tempered martensite of a hardness of about 28 Rockwell C or 269 Brinell. The study deals first with the loss of toughness in AISI-SAE 5140 steel caused by increasing the phosphorus content from about 0.020 to 0.040 pct. A second part of the work deals with counteracting this loss in toughness by replacing a part of the chromium by molybdenum. A series of molybdenum modifications was studied, in each of which the chromium was reduced sufficiently to duplicate the hardenability of 5140 steel. Phosphorus affects the toughness of steel in two ways. An inherent lack of toughness of phosphorus-bearing ferrite as compared to low phosphorus ferrite has often been noted. Jolivet and Vidall have shown that phosphorus has the same effect in tempered martensite in chromium steels. The other well known effect of phosphorus is to make steel susceptible to temper embrittlement. Temper brittleness is a loss in toughness brought about by tempering steel within a limited temperature interval somewhat below the A1 temperature. In most of the standard AISI-SAE alloy steels, this temperature interval is approximately 850-1100°F. Either of these types of loss in toughness is easily followed by the shift in the transition temperature obtained with the notched-bar impact test. The data to be presented show the beneficial effect of substituting molybdenum for a part of the chromium in 5140 steel with either moderate (0.020 pct) or high (0.040 pct) phosphorus contents. Both the inherent lack of toughness of phosphorus-bearing steel and temper brittleness are counteracted by this use of molybdenum. The work of Jolivet and Vidal mentioned above shows the detrimental effect of phosphorus on the toughness of tempered martensite in the absence of temper embrittlement, as well as the temper brittleness caused by phosphorus. They used two steels, essentially 0.25 pct C-1.4 pct Cr, with 0.044 and 0.013 pct P, respectively. The nonembrittled state was obtained by quenching in oil from 1610°F, then tempering for one hour at 1200°F and quenching in water. In this state the transition temperature range of the low phosphorus steel in the notched-bar impact test was below that of the steel with 0.044 pct P. An additional treatment of 24 hr at 975°F (that is, in the embrittling range) caused both steels to lose toughness, but the high phosphorus steel showed the greater embrittlement. Diffusion in the presence of deformation was studied by the method of vacuum dezincification of copper-rich and silver-rich solid solutions containing 7 to 30 pct Zn. The specimens were designed to permit the study of diffusion in separate portions of a given specimen characterized by strain rates ranging from essentially zero to approximately 10 sec-. No effect of deformation on diffusion was observed. BEGINNING with the work of Buffington and Cohen: interest in the question of the effect of stress or strain on diffusion has largely been concentrated on the enhancement of diffusion in specimens subjected to Continuous plastic deformation. The present research is a contribution to this limited area. However, as a preliminary to focusing attention on this special topic, it will be desirable to make a broad survey of the larger question, especially since there has been considerable foreign work in areas outside those of current interest in the United States. Since most of the topics referred to in the following section are both complex and imperfectly understood at present, it has been expedient in most instances to offer only a guide to the general nature of the work rather than a critical evaluation. PREVIOUS WORK The effect of elastic stress on diffusion has received considerable attention, especially with regard to the thermodynamic driving force for diffusion. The thermodynamic treatments have been based on the work of Gibb, Voigt, Planck, and Leontovich.' Konobeevskii and Selisski6 made a first attempt at treating the problem in 1933, and Gorskii7 a few years later gave a solution applicable to single crystals as well as to polycrystalline specimens. In 1943 Konobeevski8 published treatments that have been the basis of much Russian work up to the present. For example, Aleksandrov and Lyubov used his work in explaining the velocity of lateral growth of pearlite. Early work in the United States was that of Mooradian and Norton, which showed that lattice distortion tends to be relieved before it can significantly affect the diffusion process. Druyvesteyn and Berghoutl1 observed a slight effect of elastic strain on self-diffusion in copper, while de Kazinczy12 found that both elastic and plastic deformation increased the rate of diffusion of hydrogen in steel. On the other hand, Grimes58 observed no effect of either elastic or plastic straining on the diffusion of hydrogen in nickel. High-frequency alternating stresses have been reported by various investigator s13-l5 to increase the rate of diffusion. A special form of elastic stressing is the imposition of hydrostatic pressure, a condition that is amenable to Conventional thermodvnamic analysis. Most of the experimental results in this area are consistent in showing a slight decrease in diffusion rates at high pressures.16-l8 Although Geguzinl reported a pronounced effect of relatively small pressures, Barnes and Mazey20 failed to Corroborate this finding, while Guy and Spinelli21 advanced an explanation of the phenomenon observed by Geguzin. It has been recognized that the thermodynamic treatment of diffusion phenomena in an arbitrarily stressed body is complicated by the fact that the desired state of quasi-equilibrium of the shear stresses cannot be maintained during a general diffusion process. However, attempts have been made by Meix-ner22-24 and Fasto to treat certain restricted cases, such as relaxation. FastovZ7 has also incorporated the general stress tensor into the thermodynamics of irreversible processes. The lattice strain that accompanies the formation of a solid solution has been the subject of much study,28-s0 and indirectly it has entered into many recent theories of diffusion. However, some Russian investigators31'32 have taken other views of this matter and have predicted large effects on diffusion rates because of concentration stresses.o In completing this brief resume of previous work involving elastic strains and before proceeding to a consideration of the effect of continuous plastic deformation, it should be pointed out that deformation of various additional types may also influence diffusion. The effect of cold-working on subsequent diffusion has been studied directly by AndreevaS and by Schumann and Erdmann-Jesnitzer, while indirect evidence has been obtained by Miller and Guarnieri and by Vitman.38 Thermal stresses may also influence diffusion, contributions to this subject having been made by Fastovs7 and by Aleksandrov and Lyubv. The work of Johnson and Martin,o Dienes and Damask,3Band DamaskS considered the question of radiation-enhanced diffusion. In considering previous work on the subject of plastic deformation and diffusion, attention will be directed to those studies concerned primarily with diffusion rather than with its relation to Creep, e.g., the work of Dorn, or to the acceleration of diffusion -controlled reactions. The ternary-alloy system Nb-Mo-C was investigated by means of X-ray, melting point, DTA, and metallo-graphic techniques; a complete phase diagram for temperatures above 1500°C was established. Above 1960°C, niobium monocarbide and the cubic (Bl) high-tenzperature phase in the Mo-C system form an uninterrupted series of solid solutions. The ternary range of the pseudocubic q MoCl-, is very restricted. Dimolyb-denum carbide dissolves up to 44 mol pct Nb2C (2240°C), whereas the maximum solid solubility of MO2C in Nb2C does not exceed 5 mol pct. The order-disorder transformation temperatures in Mo2C and Nb2C are lowered by the mutual metal exchanges. Six invariant (p = const) reactzons occur in the ternary system; three correspond to class 11-type four-phase reactions involving a liquid phase, one to a class I (eutectoid)-type, and two further isotherms are associated with limiting tie lines. The results of the Phase diagram investigation are discussed, and the thermodynamic interpretation identifies the low relative stability of the binary sub-carbides in conjunction with the large stability diflerences between niobium and molybdenum carbides as the cause for the formation of a stable equilibrium between the monocarbide and the metal phase in the ternary reson. Due to their refractoriness, the carbides of the high-melting transition metals have received increased interest in recent years as base materials in composite structures for aerospace applications at high temperatures and for the development of self-bonded cutting tool materials; other novel fields of application include power reactors, where operation at high temperatures becomes essential for attaining high power efficiencies. In these applications, the increased reaction rates at high temperatures require a close consideration of the chemical interactions between the alloy constituents. As a consequence, a detailed knowledge of the phase relationships in the alloy systems is required in order to provide a sound basis for developmental -type work. Partly as a result of the considerable experimental difficulties associated with the investigation of this high-melting alloy class, no complete studies of ternary metal-carbon systems have been performed until recently. Even the high-temperature phase relationships in the binary transition metal-carbon systems have been delineated only during the past few years to a degree of accuracy required for a more detailed study of ternary or higher-order alloys. In recent investigations of binary and ternary systems of refractory transition metals with carbon, boron, and silicon,&apos; alloys from the ternary systems Nb-Mo-C became of interest because of the demonstrated possibility2,3 of obtaining compatible composites based on metal + monocarbide combinations. In the meantime, however, studies in other, but related, ternary metal-carbon systems, such as Ta-W-C, have shown that the solid-state equilibria may change significantly toward higher temperatures (>2000°C), and that extrapolations based on low-temperature equilibrium data are, in general, not very reliable. Although the lower-temperature (<2000°C) phase relationships in the Nb-Mo-C system are similar to those found in Ta-W-C, a cursory thermodynamic analysis of the equilibria indicated4 that complete solid-solution formation between Mo2C and Nb2C should not occur at higher temperatures. The present work was conducted in order to experimentally verify these expectations and, in addition, to provide phase equilibrium data in the melting range of the alloys. In the boundary systems, niobium and molybdenum are known to form a continuous series of solid solutions.576 The continuous solubility was also confirmed by Kornilov and Polyakova,7,8 who also observed a minimum melting point at 22 at. pct Mo and 2345°C. The phase diagram investigations of the Nb-C system by Storms and Krikorian9 and Kimura and Sasaki10 were recently supplemented by Rudy et al.11,12 The system contains a high-melting monocarbide with the B1 structure, Table I, and a subcarbide, Nb2C, which exists in at least two different states of sublattice order at low temperatures47"-&apos;3 and a disordered state above approximately 2500°C.11,12 The melting-point measurements by Rudy et al .11,14 are in close confirmation of the data by Kimura and Sasaki.10 The rather complex phase relationships in the Mo-C system were only recently Clarified.15,18 The system is characterized by three congruently melting, intermediate phases, MozC, ? MoC1-x and a Mol-,, Table I, of which only Mo2C is stable at temperatures below 1650°C. Substoichiometric MozC exists in several states of sublattice order which interconvert in homogeneous phase transitions. Hyperstoichiometric compositions cannot exist in the ordered state. SEVERAL investigators, mainly concerned with the mechanical proper-ties of the alloys, have studied the so-called aluminum bronzes after various quenching and reheating treatments. Of these works, perhaps the most complete is that of Bouldoires,1 who studied changes of length, electrical conductivity, thermoelectric force, hardness and micro-structure oh tempering quenched alloys containing 5 to 20 per cent of aluminum, although the work of Carpenter and Edwards,2 Curry,3 Greenwood,4 Braesco,5 Matsuda;6,7 Grard8 and others has added much to our knowledge of the changes occurring during tempering. The so-called acicular ß decomposes on tempering at temperatures between 350° C. and the eutectoid, giving rise to a Widmanstätten structure of a needles in a matrix of d or fine a + d, associated with an increase in hardness and almost complete loss of ductility. Matsuda, studied the&apos; eutectoid transformation by means of dilatation and electrical "conductivity measurements during cooling at different rates. He found that on cooling at the rate of 10° C. per minute there was a decrease in electrical resistance and in length instead of the usual increase which occurred with slow rates of cooling. On tempering the rapidly cooled samples, the increase commenced at about 400° C. and at 520° C. the resistance and length had reached the equilibrium values. These peculiarities he accounted for as being due to a transitional phase ß&apos; being formed, ß having an electrical resistance and volume less than either ß or a + d.

Dr. John Chipman, Professor of Metallurgy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and chairman of the A.I.M.E. Committee on Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking, presided. In opening the meeting, the chairman said: "The purpose of this round table is to discuss methods of study by which more and better information on the fundamentals of steelmaking can be obtained. It was thought that a round table discussion rather than a symposium would furnish the best opportunity for those actually using various methods of study to get together and discuss their common problems. For this reason attention will be focused upon methods of study rather than upon their results. We want new and current and up-to-date discussion.

Dr. John Chipman, Professor of Metallurgy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and chairman of the A.I.M.E. Committee on Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking, presided. In opening the meeting, the chairman said: "The purpose of this round table is to discuss methods of study by which more and better information on the fundamentals of steelmaking can be obtained. It was thought that a round table discussion rather than a symposium would furnish the best opportunity for those actually using various methods of study to get together and discuss their common problems. For this reason attention will be focused upon methods of study rather than upon their results. We want new and current and up-to-date discussion.

Experimental work is described in which extremely dilute aurocyanide liquors are treated with novel surface-active complexing agents to produce a hydrophobic aurocyanide species. Subsequent aeration of these liquors causes accumulation of such species at the air-water interface and the aurocyanide complex is transferred to a froth concentrate. A detailed performance assessment of this process is made and this knowledge used in the design of a pilot plant facility. Early results indicate the feasibility of the selective recovery of aurocyanide ions from reclaimed residue dam water (approximately 0.2ppm Au) with upgrade ratios of the order 180:1. A further study was made applying ion flotation to the recovery of gold from a carbon-in-pulp (CIL) feed liquor (approximately 1.0ppm Au). The probable economics of this process compared to conventional CIL processing is also described. Successful development of countercurrent ion flotation for concentrating solids-free gold solutions may offer a lower cost alternative to existing gold ore processing technologies, or in more secondary applications such as concentrating dilute gold solutions or heap leach runoff. The technology may also have more generalised applications to other heavy metal process- Ing.

Scrubbing of simulated copper reverberatory furnace gases containing 1.0 percent sulfur dioxide with the minus 74 ~m fraction of the San Manuel tailings has shown sulfur dioxide removals of almost 100 percent over an effluent pH range of 3.1 to 4.6 and a wide range of liquid to gas ratios with absorptions of 11 to 17 Kg of sulfur dioxide per tonne of minus 74 um slimes. The high reactivity of the tailings slimes with S02 indicates that the reaction rate is not controlled by the slow dissolution of calcium carbonate in sulfurous acid which characterizes scrubbers using ground limestone. The interpretation of these results has been considerably enhanced by wet chemical analysis and emission spectrographic analysis which show that calcium and iron account for about 90 percent of the SO2 absorption with the rest being accounted for by aluminum, magnesium, potassium, and sodium. Mineralogic examination confirms the, chemical and spectrographic analyses showing that the major constituent removed from the slimes is calcium carbonate, with lesser amounts of chlorite and montmorillonite (silicates containing iron, magnesium, aluminum, and calcium) being removed.

Quang Ninh province is the most significant coal producing region in the north of Vietnam. The Nui Beo Coal Company (NBCC) operates open pit mines in Quang Ninh province and the waste overburden produced is dumped as sidehill fill in the Chinh Bac waste dump site. In the past, no special consideration has been given to the environmental impacts during the dumping operations. The mine waste is transported in trucks from the mine site to the dumping site and the loading, hauling and dumping operations are the main sources of dust emission. Rain events, especially during the rainy season, cause the generation of contaminated surface water as well as seepage of water through the dump at a number of locations. The existence of cracks at the top of the dump can pose serious stability problems with heavy rain events leading to failure of slopes which can potentially disturb vast areas of land currently used for agricultural purposes and human settlement. For sustainable development at the Chinh Bac waste dump site in the future, apart from the social and economic considerations to be assessed, there is an absolute necessity for environmental protection measures to be in place both during and after the dumping of the mine waste overburden. Research Association Mining and Environment in Vietnam (RAME) is working to develop and implement concepts for the mitigation of environmental problems emerging from dust, contaminated water and lacking slope stability to ensure successful rehabilitation of the coal mine waste dumps in the north of Vietnam. Within the framework of RAME, the Institute of Mining Engineering I (RWTH Aachen University) is managing and working to develop the stabilisation concepts for the solid mine waste dump in collaboration with the Chair of Geotechnical Engineering (RWTH Aachen University), Brenk Systemplanung and the Vietnamese group of companies VINACOMIN (Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Group). The most economical and environmentally sound operations, as well as locally adaptable environmental protection measures, are essential for the sustainable development of the dumping operations at Chinh Bac dump. This paper describes the dump site and the sustainable development possibilities with an emphasis on the environmental protection and stability problems at the Chinh Bac waste dump.

Silver-lead ores are widely distributed through- out the Mount Lofty and Flinders Ranges, but none of the deposits is large. Historically the Glen Osmond Mines are the most significant as the site of the first metalliferous mining in Australia, but Talisker was one of the three largest producers of silver-lead in a state whose mining history is dom- inated by copper. The mine is located in a magnificent natural setting on Talisker Conservation Park, near Cape Jervis, southwest of Adelaide (Figure 1). It is exempt from the operations of the Mining Act and listed on the Register of State Heritage Items. The mine and associated township of Silverton were dominated by Cornish influences during the period of principal activity between 1862 and 1872. Silverton, located on a ridge overlooking the mine, grew to a population of about 300 at its peak in 1870 and the area was very much another &apos;little Cornwall&apos;.
