"Equity Silver Mines Limited owns and operates an open pit silver 111ine located 37 km southeast of Houston in the Omineca District of British Columbia, Figure l. The property is approximately 300 km west of Prince George and 417 km east of the Port of Prince Rupert. This is the largest silver mine in Canada and one of the five largest silver producers in the western world.Equity is a subsidiary of Placer Development Limited, which owns 70 of Equity's issued and outstanding Common Shares. Placer was responsible for financing and developing the property and now provides general management and administrative services.All mining is by open pit methods, using three 1600 P&H shovels, eight 45 t Caterpillar and three 77 t Wabco trucks, three 40R rotary drills, two D8 dozers, one 9888 front-end loader and other ancillary equipment. We are now phasing out the Southern Tail pit and bringing the Main Zone into productior; see Figure 2.Comminution in the concentrator is achieved via primary, secondary, and tertiary crushers followed by rod and ball mills. The flotation circuit, with Southern Tail ore, produces a concentrate containing between 3 000 and 6 500 g of silver per tonne, 201 copper, and 25 g of gold per tonne. Running Main Zone ore, concentrate grades will decrease to about 4 500 g of silver per tonne, 17% copper, and 18 g of gold per tonne. Design milling capacity is 5 300 tpd, which is often exceeded.The flotation concentrate contains relatively high levels of antimony and arsenic. Because of these impurities Equity was unable to obtain economically acceptable long-term sales contracts for flotation concentrate. For this reason a leaching process was developed, and a plant designed, built and placed in operation. Due to the complex and unique technology involved, many start-up problems were encountered but by March 1983 the leach plant was considered ""fully operational."" This paper describes some of our progress and problems in bringing the Equity leach plant through its start-up period."

Scandium can be recovered from waste streams of other metallurgical processes such as red mud from the Bayer process and titanium dioxide acid waste. This is accomplished by an integrated process comprising leaching using acidic media, solvent extraction using organic solvents and stripping of Sc from the organic phase using NH4F solutions. The precipitation of scandium as (NH4)3ScF6 from NH4F strip liquors has been demonstrated at lab-scale with recoveries and purities greater than 98% and 98.3%, respectively. It is desired to assess the possibility of recovering the solvents for re-use in the process to improve its economy and environmental friendliness. Investigations have been conducted to recover alcohol by simple distillation from strip liquor-alcohol mixtures containing about 50 v/v% alcohol. The mixtures were obtained after anti-solvent precipitation of (NH4)3ScF6 using an alcohol to strip liquor volumetric ratio of 1:1. The starting strip liquor contained about 2000 mg/L scandium in 3 mol/L NH4F solution. In the recovery of methanol, the first distillate product collected had a purity of about 87 v/v% and this decreased slightly with time over two hours. The methanol distillate collected in the first 30 minutes with a purity of ca. 85 v/v% was re-used in anti-solvent crystallisation of (NH4)3ScF6 from the initial strip liquor, and the scandium recovery attained was about 98.6 w/w%, almost similar to that of 99.2 w/w% obtained using 100 v/v% methanol. For ethanol recovery, the first distillate product collected was approx. 84 v/v% pure and the distillate collected in the first 30 minutes with a purity of about 75 v/v% achieved a scandium recovery of about 97.2 w/w% in comparison to 98.5 w/w% obtained using 100 v/v% ethanol during anti-solvent crystallisation. At very low concentrations, carbon dissolves interstitially in molybdenum resulting in a linear expansion of lattice parameter with increase of carbon in solid solution. Geometrical consideration of the relative size of carbon atom to size of interstice approximately predicts the observed volume expansion. THE element carbon, occurring in molybdenum, either as an unavoidable impurity, or purposely added, markedly affects the mechanical properties of molybdenum. Several investigators1-" have noted the occurrence of molybdenum carbide at the grain boundaries of cast molybdenum, and Fischer and Rengstorff' have shown that this intergranular constituent can induce intergranular brittleness. The appreciable change, with temperature, of the solid solubility of carbon in molybdenum, found by Few and Manning," suggests other important effects upon mechanical properties. Finally the relative atom diameters of carbon and molybdenum (the ratio of atom diameters is 0.59) are indicative, by analogy with iron (ratio of carbon atom diameter to iron atom diameter is 0.65), of a possible interstitial solid solution. If carbon dissolves intersti-tially in molybdenum, anelastic effects and age-hardening effects, similar to those observed in other body-centered cubic metals, could be expected. However, from the work of Sykes, Van Horn, and Tucker," it might be inferred that carbon forms only a substitutional solid solution with molybdenum. These considerations made it desirable to study the effect of carbon on the lattice parameter of molybdenum in greater detail than heretofore. All heat treating was done in a high temperature furnace7 built specifically for heat treatment of molybdenum. The temperatures and times of heat treatment were determined from the a solubility limit for the Mo-C system." These heat treatments were carried out in argon which was purified with respect to N, and H.!0." Purification of the argon was accomplished by passing the argon over hot (750°C) titanium and then through a magnesium perchlorate drying tower. As many as six samples were run concurrently and quenched at different times without interrupting the furnace cycle. Both the purity of the furnace atmosphere and ability to quench samples from any temperature up to 4000 °F were of prime importance in the successful heat treatment of samples for the lattice parameter investigation. Carbon Analysis The Leco Combustion apparatus was used for carbon analysis. This apparatus is capable of an accuracy of & 0.003 pct for a 1 g sample in the range below 0.10 pct. However, it is felt the degree of accuracy is somewhat better than this limit in view of the consistency evident by cross checking a number of determinations. The Battelle Analytical Laboratory consistently reported check results to within k 0.001 pct C. X-ray Measurements The molybdenum wire specimens (20 mils) were carefully filed down to about 12 mils and then etched with nitric acid to 8 mils. Carbon analyses were made on specimens before reduction in size; however, since there was no evidence of surface carburization, it is probable that the carbon was uniformly distributed throughout the sample. The resultant specimens were strain free and small enough to minimize the error in the lattice parameter determinations due to X-ray absorption. Diffraction patterns were obtained with a Debye-Scherrer powder camera 114.59 mm in diam utilizing the Straumanis type asymmetrical film mounting. Nickel-filtered copper. Ka radiation and zirconium-filtered molybdenum Ka radiation were used. Line positions on the film were measured with a traveling microscope equipped with a vernier scale permitting measurement to 0.001 cm. The average of five readings was used to determine the position of each line. The scope of work for the fast track construction of the Weeks Island Replacement Facility, Weeks Island, Louisiana included the design and construction of two salt mines. Mine #1 - An interim underground mining level consisting of a 975 m (3200 ft) incline and 3520 m of 5.5 m x 7.3 m (11560 ft of 18 ft x 24 ft) drill and blast excavation; raise boring; core drilling; roadheader excavation; complete bulk material handling facilities utilizing an existing production shaft. Mine #2 - Simultaneous with the interim mine construction a new one million ton per year underground salt mine was constructed consisting of: two 5.5 m diameter x 381 m (18 ft diameter x 1250 ft) deep shafts; 76450 cu m (100,000 cu yd) of drill and blast bottom excavation; surface and undergound bulk material handling systems (conveyors, skip loaders, shaft equipment, hoisting); ground freezing for water control for both the production and service shafts; the design of the first underground doublewall slipform installation of a dynamic bitumen shaft lining system; the emergency grouting of both the existing production shaft and the interim mining level in the salt dome; 227 mt x 64 m (250 ton x 210 ft) high structural steel production headframe; 2.2 MW (3000 hp) double drum mine hoist; service shaft headframe; and service buildings.

The ANZECC/ARMCANZ (2000) Water Quality Guidelines (the Guidelines) are the primary reference used in Australia and New Zealand for managing and regulating water quality. For most mining operations in Queensland, the environmental authority (EA – licence) incorporates the national default guideline values (GVs) for ecosystem protection as trigger levels (TLs). Exceedances of TLs ‘trigger’ further investigation and reporting. A review of the surface water compliance history at a metalliferous mine in North West Queensland identified minor exceedances of the cobalt GV as a common trigger for investigation and compliance reporting.The reliability of GVs is dependent on the availability and quality of ecotoxicology data for the relevant contaminant. The current national default GV for cobalt of 1.4 µg/L is classified as a low reliability GV due to the lack of available data at the time it was derived (ANZECC/ARMCANZ, 2000).The Guidelines are presently being revised and the toxicant GVs will be available as a set of web-based values and associated technical briefs. The new platform will enable the timely revision of existing GVs and inclusion of GVs for additional toxicants. Cobalt was considered a priority toxicant for the Guidelines’ revision, but was not included in the revision process.A preliminary review of the international literature indicated that at least 15 additional chronic cobalt toxicity studies had been published since 2000, sufficient to derive a high reliability cobalt GV using the protocols developed for the revision of the Guidelines (Batley et al, 2014; Warne et al, 2015). History In approaching the subject of diamond-drilling practice, a brief history of the origin and development of the diamond drill may be of interest. The use of black diamonds for boring holes in rock was discovered in 1863 by Rudolph Leschot, a French engineer. In 1864, he employed a diamond bit to bore holes for blasting purposes in the construction of the Mont Cenis tunnel between France and Italy. The method was introduced and developed in the United States in the late sixties. The first deep hole was drilled for coal in 1870, near Pottsville, Penn., by M. C. Bullock. This hole was seven hundred and fifty feet deep. It can be inferred that the diamond drill was introduced into Canada in 1871, when a bore-hole, known as Harper's bore-hole, was drilled for coal at Springhill, Cumberland county, Nova Scotia; and at the old Silver Islet mine, near Port Arthur, the diamond drill was in use as early as 1872. Diamond Drills While M. C. Bullock was developing the diamond drill for exploratory work, the Sullivan Machine Company, of Claremont, N.H., was developing the diamond channelers and gadders for quarry work. These quarry machines were very successful until the high price of black diamonds became prohibitive. In 1878, Albert Ball, chief engineer of the Sullivan Machine Company, designed the Sullivan diamond drill so well known today. The first of these drills went to the Lake Superior iron ranges. After 1880, use of the diamond drill expanded rapidly and spread to all parts of the world where exploratory work was being done. In recent years, the type of diamond drill has not changed much, but better material is going into its construction. Steel castings have replaced cast-iron. Ball and roller bearings are now used instead of brasses and babbits. Gun lubrication has eliminated the oil-can. These improvements make a drill that can be operated for long periods without expense for repairs.

Since its introduction several years ago in the United States, the high pressure belt filter press has proven to be a highly cost-effective dewatering device in a number of mining and industrial applications. To evaluate the process and economic factors associated with the dewatering of coal refuse, a comprehensive program of laboratory and on-site pilot studies has been conducted. This paper will summarize findings of this study and discuss advantages of the belt filter press over conventional dewatering methods. The conventional means of dewatering thickened coal refuse involves the use of vacuum disc filters or centrifuges. Due to the high amount of energy used to dewater refuse with these devices it was a logical course of action to apply belt filter press technology to this application, since a belt filter press will require less than 3.7 kW (connected).

In the event of a sudden nuclear attack upon the United States, it is imperative that vital command and control centers have a high probability of survival. One such vital facility is the North American Air Defense Command Combat Operations Center at Colorado Springs, Colorado. Known briefly as NOW, this installation when completed will be housed in large chambers excavated out of granite beneath the eastern slope of Cheyenne Mountain (Figure 1). The NORAD COC, a U. S. Air Force sponsored project, will serve as the primary collection and evaluation center for data concerning unknown aircraft, missiles, or space vehicles, which might bring destruction to North America. The data will be fed into high-speed computers and electronic equipment from outpost sources - radar, ballistic missile early warning stations and picket ships throughout the world. Electronically controlled display boards will make it possible to evaluate the tracking data instantaneously and to take appropriate defensive action1.

The Saskatchewan industry has the advantages of an ore body of a size and consistency unmatched anywhere else in the world, and large, efficient mines with production costs that compare favourably with those in other countries. On the minus side, Saskatchewan is remote from most major markets, and producers face a distribution challenge to reach the offshore markets which is the main focus of this presentation. One of the characteristics of the world potash business is that all of the major sources of production are located in the developed areas of the world, while there is no significant production in any of the highly populated developing countries. The major potash producers are located in Canada and the United States, in West Germany, France, Spain and the U.K., in Russia and East Germany, and in Israel and Jordan. There is currently no significant production in any of the countries in Asia (with the exception of Jordan where a plant is currently in the start-up phase), Africa, Latin America or Oceania, and all of these areas must, therefore, import a11 of their potash requirements from the producing countries.

Indonesia holds a significant role in the utilisation of coal resources in the world. Although the number of Indonesian coal resources and reserves do not fall into the world’s top ten, according to 2009 statistics, Indonesia is the seventh largest producer of coal with a production of 256 Mt. More than 80 per cent of this amount is sold in the export market, making Indonesia the world’s second largest coal exporter. Most of the exported coal from Indonesia is used to fulfil the needs of the Pacific market, such as Japan, Taiwan, China, among others. It is also possible to reach the Atlantic market.Along with Indonesia’s development program, until 2025 the Indonesian government has adopted a National Energy Policy that aims to reduce the role of petroleum in electricity generation and replacing it with coal. As a follow-up of the policy, since 2009 PT PLN, the state electricity company has built steam power plants throughout Indonesia as an implementation of the first stage of the Electrical Acceleration Project with a capacity of 10 000 MW. Moving forward, in 2011 PT PLN will also build the second stage of the project with a capacity of 10 000 MW. As a result of the program, the domestic need for coal is expected to increase as much as 44.8 Mt.With the increase in domestic need and decrease in the number of reserves, the Indonesian government has adopted policies to secure the domestic coal supply. A policy that may potentially be adopted by the government is the limiting of coal production, seeing the high rate of increase in Indonesian coal production. The adoption of such a policy will change the distribution map of coal in the Pacific market. Thus, this paper will evaluate the change of coal distribution patterns in the Pacific market along with the increase in Indonesian domestic needs and Indonesian adoption of policies regarding the securing of coal supplies.

A 5-hole pattern was drilled from the surface at a site near Oak Grove, Jefferson County, Ala., to degasify the gassy Mary Lee coal bed in advance of mining. Gas and water production was monitored for 1 year, 4 months to allow gas flow to stabilize fully. A thickened water stimulation treatment was designed and applied in one hole of the pattern to evaluate this degasification technique for the Mary Lee coalbed. A gas production rate of 70,000 fts/day after stimulation treatment indicates that the use of vertical boreholes coupled with hydraulic fracturing in advance of mining the Mary Lee coalbed would provide for more rapid degasification and could provide a possible source of natural gas.

Back in 1995, Air Liquide and Union Minière presented a joint paper at the Copper 95 – Cobre 95 Conference in Santiago, Chile, describing the first full scale plant trials of shrouded sonic injection in a Hoboken converter at the Hoboken smelter in Belgium. Almost a quarter of a century later, the technology known as ALSI, or Air Liquide Shrouded Injection, has been tested or commercially implemented in several copper and nickel smelters. Despite these successes, the copper industry did not adopt it widely in the same manner the steel industry adopted the Savard-Lee tuyere in the 1970s and beyond, not even in the way the lead industry adopted it with the Queneau-Schuhmann-Lurgi, or QSL, process. The development and implementation of bottom-blowing smelting and converting technologies in China in the last ten years, however, changed the industry’s perception that high- and ultra-high oxygen injection in copper smelting and converting was indeed possible under specific process conditions. In this paper, I retrace the key learnings of my journey with sonic injection over the twenty five years from my humble beginnings in my early years with Air Liquide, through plant trials and technology implementation in the late 1990s and into the first decade of the new millennium, and ultimately, to the most conclusive proof that the sonic injection design methodology I established is valid, and the calculation tools I developed are accurate. I conclude by sharing my thoughts about whether the deployment of the Savard and Lee legacy within the nonferrous industry was just a pipe dream or whether it will become a reality. INTRODUCTION In the context of lower quality ores and changing economic markets, copper smelters need to continuously innovate and improve to remain competitive and respect their corporate social responsibility engagements. One avenue towards this business, social, and environmental goal is to increase process intensity while lowering fossil fuel consumption to lower greenhouse gas emissions and reducing process off-gas volumes to better capture As and SO2–laden emissions. I believe high oxygen sonic injection for submerged tuyere copper bath smelting and converting is one technology that can help smelters achieve that goal of higher business, social, and environmental performance. Twenty five years ago, when I discovered that the Savard-Lee tuyere had revolutionized the steel industry (Savard & Lee, 1966; Knuppel, Brotzmann, Fassbieder, Savard, & Lee, 1972), I had a dream — or was it a vision? — that within the first decade of the new millennium, modern copper smelters operating submerged tuyere bath smelting and converting vessels will have implemented high oxygen sonic injection and will be reaping the financial and environmental benefits that the steel industry enjoyed in the 1970s. As we approach the end of the second decade of the new millennium, I have to admit that my dream has been all but shattered as the majority of copper bath smelting and converting vessels today continue to operate under bubbling regime conditions. This mode of operation is archaic, still requires tuyere punching and blows at inherently low enrichment levels, particularly in converting, producing large volumes of process off-gases. Under such operating conditions, regulations and emission quotas for As, SO2, and particulate matter oblige smelters to use not just primary or secondary hoods, but sometimes even tertiary hoods. I vividly recall being told, fifteen or twenty years ago when visiting smelters to promote the application of the Savard-Lee tuyere in nonferrous processes, that implementing sonic injection was not economically viable due to the high cost of compressing air and oxygen. Some of the smelters I visited back then have since mandated their engineering partners to design and build secondary or even tertiary hoods. I cannot fathom how secondary and particularly tertiary hoods, with all of their auxiliary equipment and added ducting, could be more economically viable than purchasing and installing a few compressors, expanding the pipeline network for compressed air and oxygen, and installing a new control valve train to feed sonic tuyeres. Besides, adding hoods does not address the problem of As and SO2-laden fugitive emissions at its source but merely provides a costly mitigation for it by capturing larger volumes of process off-gases rather than reducing these large volumes in the first place. Moreover, hooding does not reduce energy consumption nor does it increase process intensity, two aspects that I believe are critical for smelters to remain competitive and sustainable in a deeply changing market environment.

A comprehensive mathematical model of the Sherritt-Gordon ammoniacal pressure leaching process at K winana Nickel Refinery has been constructed. The process is comprised of six autoclaves functioning as a three-stage leach circuit, operating over the temperature and pressure ranges of 85-95°C and 750-1000 kPa, respectively. The process chemistry forms a complex series-parallel reaction network, characterised by: (1) the gas-liquid mass transfer and reduction of oxygen, (2) the oxidation of eight distinct minerals, (3) the oxidation of sulphur, and successive reactions involving various intermediately oxidised sulphur species, and (4) the oxidation of Fe(II) to Fe(III), and subsequent precipitation as a hydrated ferric oxide. Material balances were developed for species in all three phases, and an energy balance to account for all reactions and phase conversions. The multiple convolution integral (MCI) statistical reactor model was employed for the scale-up of particle kinetics. The model has been validated against plant data, and simulation results are in agreement with plant performance.

The performance of the U.S. economy in 1977 was similar to that in 1976 which, in turn, had been a considerable improvement over 1974-75. In 1977 real gross national product (GNP) showed a similar, but some-what slower, growth pattern compared with 1976. Real GNP increased sharply in the first quarter of the year followed by smaller increases for the remaining three quarters. With only two exceptions, the monthly unemployment rate declined or remained steady throughout 1977, falling to a low for the year in December. The inflation rate in 1977 was slightly higher than in 1976, but the rate still remained far below that of 1974-75. Total U.S. output as measured by GNP in current dollars rose 10.8% in 1977. Real GNP in constant 1972 dollars increased 4.9%, and inflation, as measured by the implicit price deflator, rose 5.6%. In real terms, gross private domestic investment for residential structures increased 19.3% in 1977, only slightly below the 22.9% rise in 1976; State and local government expenditures increased 1.1 % in 1977; and personal consumption expenditures for services rose 4.5%.

In this investigation, the effects of different coal chemical properties were studied to estimate the coal Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) values index. An artificial neural network (ANN) method for 300 data-sets was used for evaluating the HGI values. Ten input parameters were used, and the outputs of the models were compared in order to select the best model for this study. A threelayer ANN was found to be optimum with architecture of five neurons in each of the first and second hidden layers, and one neuron in the output layer. The correlation coefficients (R2) for the training and test data were 0.962 and 0.82 respectively. Sensitivity analysis showed that volatile material, carbon, hydrogen, Btu, nitrogen, and fixed carbon (all on a dry basis) have the greatest effect on HGI, and moisture, oxygen (dry), ash (dry), and total sulphur (dry) the least effect. The objective of this contract is to design, build and demonstrate a support system to improve roof control in the entries of longwall mines. The objective of this phase has been the detailed design of such a system and the selection of a test site in which to perform the pilot demonstration. The result is a complete set of detail drawings or specifications which define the three major components of the system. The Gate Support is a variation of a face chock which has an extended canopy and additional hydraulic legs to protect the region of the face-entry intersection. The Entry Support is a steel beam and hydraulic prop set which is reusable and serves to support the first 100 or more feet of entry inby the longwall face. The Transporter is a bolter-like vehicle with a crane used for installing and retreating the beam sets. The test site selected is CF&I's Allen Mine in Colorado. They presently use simi¬lar steel beams and expect the FMA support system to be more effective as well as recoverable. It is recommended that the completed drawings be used to build a prototype system and test it first in a remote section of the mine and then in the active longwall tail entry.

The paper presents a survey of the possibilities of the simulation techniques for improving the design and operation of gold processing plants. The procedure to construct kinetic models that are used in simulators is first reviewed, and examples are given for cyanide gold dissolution and gold adsorption on carbon. Then, an overview of the structures of the plant simulators is proposed, and the simulation equations formulated for a carbon-in-leach process. Finally, the potential of simulation methods is illustrated by four examples. The first one shows how it is possible to use a simulator to design a cascade of leaching tanks while optimizing an economic performance criterion. The second one illustrates the role of simulators for optimal tuning of the cyanide addition strategy in a leaching circuit. The third example focuses on the power of simulation to design carbon transfer strategies in a carbon-in-pulp process. Finally, the last example shows the role of on-line simulators for optimally supervising the automatic control of cyanide addition into leaching tanks.
