IN recent years zirconium and beryllium have become of great interest because of their special properties. Zirconium is known for its remarkable ability to absorb the gases oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen, has extensive use as a getter in electron tubes and has indeed become the primary metal in the manufacture of photoflash bulbs. Beryllium is of interest because it is light metal and as such could supplement aluminum and magnesium in light metal applications. The late development of zirconium ductile at room temperature produced by both the iodide and calcium reduction methods has stimulated frequent articles on this metal in the recent literature. Beryllium is so closely akin to zirconium crystall-ographically that some investigators are of the opinion that beryllium should be ductile at room temperature if it were pure enough. The crystallographic relationship of beryllium and zirconium, the interest created in Be-Zr alloys where the zirconium is believed to function as a remover of solid solution gas in beryllium and thus increase the ductility of the beryllium rich alloy, and the amenability of these metals to powder metallurgy methods stimulated this approach to an investigation of the system Be-Zr. Preliminary work showed that a zirconium compact melted when pressed in contact with a beryllium compact and sintered at 1250°C, without any apparent final bond between the two. A search of the literature revealed nothing pertinent about the Zr-Be system or about any zirconium - beryllium alloys. In 1936 Misch³ vaguely identified the compound ZrBe2 and reported that it has a deformed cubic structure. Two patents," , were issued to Mach-lett Laboratories in 1943 and in 1946 regarding the addition of small amounts of zirconium to beryllium in order to improve the ductility of beryllium so that it may better be used for X ray windows. In considering the alloy formation of beryllium with other metals Raynor thought it unlikely that zirconium would have any solid solubility in beryllium. From this indefinite information nothing could be ascertained about the possible use of Zr-Be alloys or the use of these metals intimately. A brief preliminary study of the system Zr-Be by powder metallurgy methods was undertaken to provide regions for more intense studies of Zr-Be alloys and as a guide to a formal phase diagram determination. The investigation described in the following pages was completed in less than three weeks. The usefulness of this rapid method to facilitate phase diagram studies and new alloy investigations will be shown. Materials and Procedure Zirconium powder was produced from crystal bar stock of high purity supplied by Foote Mineral Co. The crystal bar was converted to hydride at 730°C, crushed, and the hydride decomposed in purified argon at 850°C. 60 pct of the powder passed through a 325 mesh screen, 40 pct of the powder was —140 mesh, +325 mesh and the average particle size of the total was 8 to 12 microns. Sedimentary deposits of pluvial Lake Bonneville are an important source of sand and gravel suitable for aggregate and construction in Utah. Data on Lake Bonneville basin sand and gravel deposit thickness, volume, grain size, percent of fines, and durability were statistically analyzed to detect variations associated with geologic domains, geographic location, Lake Bonneville shorelines, and sand and gravel deposit type, and to construct quantitative deposit models. Analysis showed several trends; (1) sand and gravel in younger shorelines was slightly more durable and the deposits considerably larger in volume, (2) younger shore- lines are also more likely to contain more than one genetic deposit type, (3) the volume of terrace deposits is larger than beach deposits, (4) terraces and beaches are generally thicker than spits and bars, (5) the northern part of the Bonneville Basin contains slightly more durable sand and gravel than the southern part of the basin and is more likely to contain deposits composed of more than one genetic deposit type, aid (6) the Wasatch domain deposits are composed of more than one genetic deposit type more often than deposits of the Basin and Range domain. Three additional conclusions with immediate economic significance are; (1) the median sand and gravel deposit in the Wasatch domain, 360,000 m3 (275,000 yd3), is three times larger than that of the Basin and Range domain (120,000 m3 [90,000 yd3]), (2) the median deposit thickness in the Wasatch domain, 5.8 m (19.0 ft), is nearly twice that of the Basin and Range domain (3 m [lo ft]), and (3) the Wasatch domain also contains slightly larger diameter gravel. These three conclusions are significant because the trend for sand and gravel development in the Bonneville Basin is to move from the Wasatch domain to the Basin and Range domain. Smaller, thinner deposits with smaller diameter gravel will require more surface area to mine than would have been necessary in the Wasatch domain. The result is a higher cost for sand and gravel in construction projects in the Salt Lake City area, especially since the gravel must also be hauled farther.

Ball wear in wet grinding mills has been the subject of considerable discussion in the last few years. Its importance to millmen is obvious in view of the fact that ball wear may cost from 2 to 4 per ton of ore for the more fortunate operators and many times this cost when a refractory ore must be reduced to a fine state of comminution. Consequently, any factual information that may be obtained on the nature of ball wear may be applied to introduce changes leading to lower ball consumption and therefore also to lower costs. In 1940, while employed with the Britannia Mining and Smelting Co., Britannia Beach, B.C., I had occasion to investigate factors that might affect ball consumption. We performed a number of tests, which will be briefly described. These tests originated as a result of changing from a 3½-in. ball to a 2-in. ball of different type of manufacture and were motivated by the desire to obtain the best possible type of 2-in. ball. Our testing was helped by the fact that the company operated a one-ton electric furnace, so that it was quite easy to make steel changes. It should be emphasized at the beginning that these tests produced results that in their general application to milling should be interpreted qualitatively rather than quantitatively. As will be evident in the description of the method used in testing, the balls were subjected to an intermittent batch grinding treatment, which may have produced results in rate of steel wear that may not have an accurate correlation with steel consumption in full scale mill operation. However, with this bed and rather arbitrary method of testing, results were obtained that may be of some interest and may stimulate further work on this subject. Unfortunately, owing to pressure of war work, our tests, which we had intended to repeat on a continuous grinding operation, had to be discontinued. Method of Testing Tests Were made in a Small cylindrical mill, rotating at 72 r.P.m. Internal dimensions of the mill were 10½-in. dia. by 9 in. The cylindrical inner surface was lined with rubber and the two ends were formed by steel plates. A charge of 2000 grams dry feed and 2000 C.C. of water was added evev 2 hr., the mill being drained of pulp before the addition of each charge, by tilting and sluicing with water. The mill was run On afternoon and night shift for daily periods of about 15 hr. total grinding time, and each test lasted from 60 to 150 hr. This batch method of testing involved a higher average pulp temperature in the mill, which undoubtedly affected comparative results in Some of the tests. Hardness oF Ball vs. Wear In these tests, special "eutectoid" steel balls were used, some of which were chill-Cut and quenched, some sand-cast and quenched, and some sand-cast and annealed to a dead soft condition. Specific software tools for Statistical Multivariate Analysis combined with real time process data were applied to Concentrator Plant at Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi SCM in Chile, basically to two Mill Lines, each one with one SAG mill (32’x15’8MW)and one Ball mill (22’x36’9.7MW). The main objective was to empower the operator actions using process patterns references instead of process variable set-points. Pattern clustering and the analysis of pattern deviations regarding normal or desired pattern, allows for improvements in process control and the further implementation of soft sensors for those variables not included in the initial model.

Roof bolter operators may be exposed to high respirable dust concentrations on continuous miner sections with blowing face ventilation when bolting is performed downwind of the continuous miner. One solution to reduce the high respirable dust concentrations is to use a canopy air curtain (CAC) to deliver clean air from a filtered blower fan directly to the bolter operators under the canopies. The influence of CAC installation in the airflow and dust dispersion around the location of the roof bolter operator can be evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This study, performed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), considers two scenarios: (1) a roof bolting machine in the center of the entry for installation of the fifth row of bolts from the face, and (2) a roof bolting machine positioned close to the face for the installation of the last row of bolts. In both scenarios, the bolting machine is placed in an environment which contains 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust and is ventilated by a blowing curtain with 3,000 cfm (1.42 m3/s) of air. This environment is used to simulate the roof bolter machine operating downstream of a continuous mining machine. Two operation positions are simulated at the same bolting location: dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts; and dual drill heads in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3/s). INTRODUCTION Roof bolting machines are used to drill bolt holes into the roof of an underground mine at specified patterns and to install roof bolts to secure the roof from falling. At times, the roof bolting machine is also used to install rib bolts; however, only the roof bolting operation was considered in this simulation. Though the roof bolting operation drastically improved the safety of miners from roof falls, some roof bolter operators are experiencing health problems associated with respirable dust. Based on recent statistics [1], following a low point in the late 1990s where the prevalence of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) in miners with 25 years or more tenure was approximately 5%, CWP now exceeds 10% for miners with 25 years or more of tenure. In central Appalachia (Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia), 20.6% of long-tenured miners have CWP and 4.5% have progressive massive fibrosis, the most severe form of CWP. CWP, also known as black lung, is an occupational respiratory disease that has no cure and can ultimately be fatal. The only way to prevent the incidence of black lung is to eliminate miners’ exposure to respirable coal mine dust. Current U.S. regulations require that the overall respirable dust concentration to be 1.5 mg/m3 or less for a full-shift sampling if respirable quartz is not present; otherwise, the standard is 10 divided by the percent quartz (not to exceed the 1.5 mg/m3 respirable dust standard) [2, 3].

"Ivanhoe Mines’ Kamoa copper project is a recently discovered high-grade copper sulphide deposit in the Katanga Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mineralization identified to date within the resource is typical of sedimentary-hosted stratiform copper deposits and comprises three distinct units: supergene, mixed, and hypogene mineralization. Since 2010, various metallurgical test work campaigns have been conducted on drill core from different areas within the deposit in line with resource expansion. The most recent bench-scale flotation test work has shown positive repeatable results. The work was conducted on a composite sample of drill core from the southern part of the Kamoa resource. The sample is representative of the first four to five years of planned production, when Ivanhoe Mines intends to produce clean, highgrade copper flotation concentrate. A detailed test work roadmap developed from first principles for the campaign led to an optimum flow sheet for treating the Kamoa mineralization. Copper recoveries of 88.3%, at a concentrate grade of 39.0% copper, were achieved using a composite sample — an improvement on the previously published 85.9% life-of-mine average copper recovery indicated in the November 2013 Kamoa Preliminary Economic Assessment. IntroductionThe Kamoa project is a newly discovered, very large, stratiform copper deposit with adjacent prospective exploration areas within the Central African Copperbelt, approximately 25 km west of the town of Kolwezi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and about 270 kilometres west of the provincial capital of Lubumbashi. Ivanhoe Mines holds its 95% interest in the Kamoa copper project through a subsidiary company, Kamoa Copper SA Limited SPRL, and DRC government owns 5%. The project location is indicated in Figure 1.In January 2013, a new independent mineral resource estimate ranked Kamoa as Africa's largest high-grade copper discovery and the world's largest undeveloped highgrade copper discovery. At this time, Ivanhoe Mines had estimated discovered Indicated Mineral Resources of 739 Mt grading 2.67% copper, containing 43.5 billion pounds of copper, and Inferred Mineral Resources of 227 Mt grading 1.96% copper, containing 9.8 billion pounds of copper, as demonstrated in the Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) (AMC, 2013). A 1% copper cut-off grade and a minimum vertical mining thickness of 3 m were applied in each classification."

A program to investigate the effects of hardened washers on the uniformity of roof bolt tension and the resulting ground control in an underground mine was carried out. The complete roof bolt installation and roof bolt loads, mine convergence, and bed separation were monitored for a period of five months. The results show no evidence to support or refute the theory that mechanical roof bolts offer better support when they are installed with a high uniformity of tension. Also shown is the fact that if the bolts are installed with a maximum deviation from the mean torque of ±15% the addition of hardened washers significantly improved the uniformity of the installed tensions in the roof bolts.

Acoustic pollution (noise) is a significant mine environmental system problem. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Labor (DOL) and other researchers have all performed contributory research on noise in mining environments. The present study addressed the problem of unavailability of a computerized, practical, routine, user-friendly, and user-editable, prose-styled application program with which one can determine (a) the noise exposure indices among mine workers, (b) mine system noise exposure level on time-weighted average basis, and (c) predictive relationships among mine workers' age, prior exposure to abnormal noise levels, prior auditory pathologies and the risk/degree of mining-induced hearing impairment. Results showed that such a program ("NEIL") is accomplishable. Additional results revealed that most U.S. mines operate within the statutory noise exposure levels. Furthermore, the mine worker's age was statistically confirmed to be the main predictive risk factor for mining-induced occupational hearing impairment.

The effect of fluid viscosity on the classification of solids in a liquid-solid cyclone was investigated. The separation size was found to be proportional to Additionally, it was found that the prediction of flow rate through a cyclone is dependent on a Reynolds criterion. Above a critical value, the flow can be predicted by a simple equation, whereas, below this value a variable orifice coefficient must be introduced. INTRODUCTION The solid-liquid cyclone is widely used as a device for classification, thickening, and heavy media separations. The more important variables and how they affect the performance of a cyclone are known and have been the subject of several investigations.' In general, these studies have paid little attention to the viscosity and those which have, introduced it through Stokes settling considerations. Systems which contain appreciable amounts of swelling clays exhibit viscosities much greater than water, and in these systems the viscosity term becomes important in determining the separation size. The work described here was done to determine in a Newtonian system the dependence of separation size on viscosity. BACKGROUND The separation size for a cyclone classifier has been related to the parameters of the cyclone by an equation of the form: where a is probably between 1.3 and 1.5, ß is between 0.50 and 0.57, and 6 has a theoretical value of 0.5. where y has a value between 1.8 and 2.0. Although these relationships are empirical, equations that differ only in the exponents have been derived from theoretical considerations. Those interested in the origin of these equations are referred to some of the original work.6,7 MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The laboratory apparatus used in this study is pictured diagramatically in Fig. 1. Feed slurry was pumped from an agitated 15-gallon plastic tank by a centrifugal pump driven by 3/4 hp motor. In nzost cases, the driving force for a lattice transformation is produced by supercooling below the equilibriunz transformation temperature. The interfnce reaction in isothermally annealed, multiphase diffusion couples may involve a luttice transformation which also requires a driving force. Direct experinzental evidence has been obtained for the existence of the driring force in the form of a supersaturated phase at the aocc)-0@cc) interface in Cu:Cu-12.5 ult pct A1 couples; the super saturation is equivalent to an excess free energy of approximately 3 cal per mol at 905. A tentatiue interpretation of the dynanzic situation a1 the interface based on the free energy-composition diagram is proposed. THE presently accepted theory of diffusion in multiphase couples1 states that there will be a phase layer in the diffusion zone for every region which has three degrees of freedom and which is crossed by the diffusion path in the equilibrium phase diagram. For binary systems, this restriction excludes all but single-phase fields and, for ternary systems, only one- and two-phase fields are included. In addition, Rhines"~ as well as other investigators3 6 have reported that the compositions of the various phases adjacent to the interfaces are, for all practical purposes, the compositions given by the intersections of the diffusion path with the solubility limits of the single-phase fields of the equilibrium phase diagram. Some studies of the rate of thickening of these intermediate diffusion layers indicate that the thickness of the layer changes para-bolically with time, or: where x is the position of the interface relative to an origin xo, t is the diffusion time, and k is a temperature-dependent factor. crank7 shows mathematically that, if the compositions at an interface are independent of time and the motion of the interface is controlled by the diffusion of the elements to and from the interface, then the segments of the concentration penetration curve for a semi-infinite step-function couple will be described by an equation of the form: hence, Eq. [l] follows from Eq. (21 if the interface compositions are fixed and if the motion of the interface is diffusion-controlled. Although the concept of local equilibrium being attained at interfaces has assumed a prominent role in the theory of diffusion in multiphase couples, experimental evidence and theoretical discussions which challenge the general validity of this concept have been reported in the literature. arkeen' has stated that strict obedience to the conditions set by the equilibrium phase diagram cannot be expected in any system in which diffusion is occurring because diffusion takes place only in the presence of an activity gradient. Darken also noted that it is usually assumed that equilibrium is attained locally at the interface although the system as a whole is not at equilibrium, the implication being that the transformation at the interface is rapid in comparison with the rate of supply of the elements by diffusion. ISirkaldy3 indicates agreement with Darken in that he believes the concept of local equilibrium is at best an approximation because the motion of the phase boundary requires that there be a free-energy difference and, hence, a departure from the equilibrium composition at the interface. Seebold and Birks9 have stated that diffusion couples cannot be in true equilibrium, but the results obtained are often in good agreement with the phase diagram. The initial deviation from equilibrium in a diffusion couple will be quite large because alloys of significantly different compositions are usually joined together. Kirkaldy feels that the transition time for the attainment of constant interface compositions (essentially the equilibrium values) will be small, although in some cases finite. Castleman and sieglelo observed such transition times in multiphase A1-Ni couples, but at low annealing temperatures these times were quite long. Similarly, ~asing" found departures, which persisted for more than 20 hr, at phase interfaces in Au-Ni and Fe-Mo diffusion couples. Braun and Powell's12 measurements of the solubility limits of the intermediate phases in the Au-In system as determined by microprobe analysis of diffusion couples do not agree with the limits reported by Hiscocks and Hume-Rothery13 who used equilibrated samples. Finally, Borovskii and ~archukova'~ have stated that the determination of the solubility limits of phase diagrams using high-resolution micro-analyzer measurements at the interfaces of multiphase couples is not an accurate technique because of deviations from the equilibrium compositions at a moving interface; diffusion couples may be used to map out the phase boundaries in the equilibrium diagram, but the final determination of the solubility iimits should be made with equilibrated samples. The purpose of this work was to investigate the conditions prevailing at an interface in a multiphase diffusion couple and to compare the interface compositions with those associated with true thermodynamic equilibrium between the two phases. Microanalyzer techniques were used to measure interface compositions in two-phase Cu-A1 diffusion couples annealed at 80@, 905", and 1000°C for various times.

A method has been developed in the laboratory for successfully treating titaniferous magnetite ore from the deposit at Iron Mountain, Wyo. The ore is roasted with 15 percent sodium carbonate to convert the vanadium to a water-soluble form and fix the soda for the subsequent electric-smelting step. Approximately 90 percent of the vanadium is recoverable in a product assaying 80 percent V2O5. The leached calcine is briquetted and smelted in a graphite-lined electric-arc furnace. Substantially all of the titanium is recovered in a soda slag, assaying 60 percent TiO2 and 2 percent Fe, which can be upgraded to 75 to 80 percent TiO2 by leaching with dilute sulfuric acid. The upgraded slag could be utilized for the production of titanium dioxide pigments or titanium tetrachloride. About 90 percent of the iron is recovered as pig iron, containing only minor amounts of vanadium, titanium, and sulfur. The high TiO2 slag compares favorably with slag containing about 70 percent TiO2 being produced by the Quebec Iron & Titanium Corp. at Sorel, Quebec. The data obtained from this investigation indicate that a feasible process has been developed for treating Iron Mountain ore, and larger-scale testing is warranted to develop engineering data for the ultimate utilization of this deposit as a source of titanium, iron, and vanadium. There are adequate supplies of basic raw materials, electric power, water, sodium carbonate, coal, and petroleum products within fairly short distances of Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyo., the nearest cities and probable plant- and labor-supply points.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (Bureau) is currently conducting a four-year study to assess the mineral resources and the mineral development potential of the 5.7 million acre Valdez Creek Mining District (VCMD) located in southcentral Alaska. The VCMD study is part of the Bureau's ongoing statewide mining district evaluation program. This report is a summary of the 1988 field work. The field work involved collection of reconnaissance placer and rock samples, and also involved sampling and examination of the mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences which were identified by literature research of the geology, exploration history, and mining history of the district. During the 1988 field season, Bureau personnel spent a total of 11 weeks in the field, collected 1,006 rock and placer samples, and located, mapped, and sampled 106 of the known mineral occurrences. The Bureau has visited 243 of the 250 known mineral occurrences during the course of the VCMD project. Reconnaissance sampling for placer occurrences resulted in the identification of 4 previously unreported gold placer occurrences, and identification of 5 occurrences that contain detectable levels of platinum or palladium. Reconnaissance sampling for lode sources of base and precious metals resulted in the identification of 5 new Lode gold-silver occurrences, identification of 2 occurrences that contain elevated quantities of chromium, cobalt, nickel, palladium, and platinum, and identification of one occurrence that contains elevated quantities of copper, molybdenum, anti zinc.

I. INTRODUCTION The new slime-concentrating plant at the Washoe Reduction Works, Anaconda, was put into operation during March, 1914. This plant, which has a capacity of 26,000,000 gal. of slime pulp carrying 2,500 tons. of solid matter per day, consists of Dorr thickeners and Anaconda multiple-deck slime concentrators.' This plant is the culmination of a great deal of experimental work extending over a considerable period of time, which work will be described briefly in the following pages.

Methane-flow and pressure data taken from a mine in the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed are compared with flow rates from lump coal obtained in laboratory experiments. From this, it is concluded that the main source of gas is the intact coalbed rather than a "crushed zone" near the working face. The permeability and sorption capacity of the intact coalbed are calculated and gas emission rates are theoretically accounted for.

The cost of drilling in the past few years of proration and ever decreasing allowables has received increasing thought and study. It seems to parallel the strides made with respect to pumping problems in 1932 and 1933. Low profit margins stimulate the search for economies. Any discussion of slim-hole drilling involves a multitude of abstract values, and the problem can be attacked only by a study of records and rational thinking. In a measure, traditional methods must be studied with a questioning attitude. The words "slim hole" may be somewhat misleading, as the term is entirely relative. For that reason I wish to define it as used in this discussion. On the Gulf Coast, I would define a normal hole as one in which 10 3/4-in. surface casing has been set and below which a 9 7/8-in. hole is dug. With this as a datum, holes of larger diameter below surface would be called "large holes," with 121/4 in. as the "extra large" class and holes of smaller diameter classed in the slim-hole range, 6 1/4 in. representing about the minimum size. The optimum size has not been definitely determined, but the preference is for a program that would call for setting 8 5/8 -in. surface casing and digging a 7 3/4 - in. hole. Different sections of the country might very properly deviate from this practice because of differences in depth, formations, regulations, or other factors. This paper will be confined to a discussion of the drilling of exploratory wells, as the drilling of this class of wells is quite a different problem from that of drilling a proven field, although many of the same considerations apply in both cases, as will be apparent. Although for many years shallow slim-hole and core-test holes of small diameter had been dug, it was not, I believe, until the fall of 1937 that serious consideration was given to its application in drilling wells 7000 ft., 8000 ft. and 9000 ft. deep on the Gulf Coast. This does not mean that nearly all such wells drilled on the Gulf Coast now are of the slim-hole variety, but only that efforts have been aimed in that direction with very encouraging results and there has been a very definite trend to reduce the size of holes, a trend that probably will continue. As to exploration policy, there appear to be two distinct and opposite views. The one usually followed in the past was more or less designed to "shoot the works" on one well. Generally on the Gulf Coast, the depth at which production might be obtained is limited by the drilling equipment and economics. With this thought in mind, wildcat wells are often planned with the idea of carrying the depth to 10,000 It., or even 15,000 ft. All of the possible hazards are anticipated and the general drilling and casing programs are so predicated. Such wells contemplate the drilling of large-diameter holes; the setting of at least one protective string of casing and an extensive coring policy, all of which finally adds up to an expensive well. WHEN an Fe-C alloy, partially reacted to pearl-ite, is quenched rapidly enough to suddenly stop the growth process, it may be expected that any carbon concentration gradients will freeze in situ in the newly formed martensite. A short tempering treatment should precipitate finely dispersed iron carbide particles in approximately the same distribution in which carbon existed during the growth process. Examination with the electron microscope of areas of tempered martensite adjacent to the pearlite-martensite interface should reveal the existence of preferred areas of precipitation. Fig. 1 is an example of an electron micrograph used in this study. Small sections of a commercial steel (0.9 pct C, 1.6 pct Mn, 0.25 pct Si) were austenitized at 945°C in air for 45 min, furnace-cooled to 697°C, iso-thermally reacted to pearlite for 30 min, and quenched into iced brine. Two samples were tempered 5 and 20 min, respectively, in air at 498°C and were subsequently quenched in water. The samples were mechanically polished and etched in 1 pct picral. Collodion replicas were made by the conventional technique; these were shadowed with chromium at about 650' from the horizontal, and electron micrographs were taken at a linear magnification of 14,200X. Prints were made at a magnification of 44,100X. Lineal analysis of the prints was made as a function of the interlamellar spacing and volume percent of iron carbide. Straight lines were drawn into tempered martensite between adjacent lamellae at a distance S/4 or S/6 apart, where S is defined as the interlamellar spacing measured at the pearlite-martensite interface. The volume percent of iron carbide was measured along each of these traces with a "gage length" of S/10. The results of analyses of two samples are shown in Table I. The area included between the S/2 and S distance from the interface could be considered homogeneous within the sensitivity of the measuring technique. This value was used as a proportionality factor to evaluate an arbitrary carbon content of homogeneous austenite, and also as a parameter by which error in measurements could be evaluated. Discussion by R.J. Pindred In his paper, Davis presents an overview of risk. He also introduces the Capital Asset Processing Model (CAPM) as a foundation for selecting the appropriate discount rate for a mining project. While applying portfolio theory is more defensible than the ad hoc adjustment of discount rates, the CAPM is not a panacea. CAPM shortcomings [The CAPM, as Davis stated, is expressed in the equation: ri=rf+pi4) where ri is the project discount rate rf is the risk free interest rate (3i is the project beta, and 0 is the market risk premium (rm - rf)] Application of the CAPM is more difficult than Davis indicates. Valuation is prospective, while the CAPM parameters are historical. Beta is determined from a regression analysis of historical data, while the beta needed for valuation is the expected beta. Betas are known to be unstable and the regressions that generate them often have low explanatory power. The difficulty of estimating a "project" beta must also be considered. Thus, the beta that is used in the CAPM will be based on the analyst's judgment. Like Cavender's discount rate, this judgment can lead to different project NPVs. Subjectivity in valuation cannot be avoided by a mechanical application of the CAPM. The risk-free rate, which Davis identifies as a short-term real rate of 4%, is also subject to scrutiny. A mining project is not a short-term investment and no single risk-free rate is appropriate for all of the cash flows. The hypothetical mine discussed in Cavender's paper is a six-year project. One might argue for the application of a risk-free rate from the Treasury yield curve at the duration of the project (in a bond-duration sense). This, too, is inappropriate. The risk-free rate should be matched to the timing of the cash flow. These rates can be determined by calculating the implied forward rates from the yield curve using a procedure known as "bootstrapping." It is likely that each of the project's cash flows would be discounted at a different rate. Commodity prices Davis criticizes the "ad hoc adjustment to the discount rate." Yet, in his discussion of the value of stochastic simulation, he suggests that the gold price be modeled as a "random walk, with or without a trend." This is essentially an arbitrary modeling of price risk. Consider that a liquid market in gold futures exists. The futures' price curve, which is closely related to the market's estimate of future spot gold prices, should be used to provide inputs to the model. This is especially true of a relatively short six-year project. Alternatively, as Davis correctly points out, a risk-averse investor can sell the commodity short to hedge price risk. Is it any more correct, in the portfolio sense, to account for price risk at all ?? Davis Pindred discusses two issues related to my paper, the shortcomings of the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and which commodity price values to use in the valuation exercise. Even though these topics are not directly related to the use or misuse of Monte Carlo simulation, they are important points to take into consideration in valuation exercises. Since I do not appear to have addressed these issues satisfactorily in my original paper, I will comment on each here. Pindred agrees with me that applying portfolio theory, and specifically the CAPM, to the selection of project discount rates is more defensible than ad hoc methods. But he then points out that the application of the CAPM to project valuation is more difficult that I indicate. It is true that the CAPM is a difficult tool for project valuation in general,. But the application of the CAPM to mining projects is one of the easiest I can think of. The biggest problem with using the CAPM for project valuation is coming up with an expected project beta. I suggest a project beta for gold projects of 0.45. The "true" value might be 0.35, 0.55 or whatever. Pindred correctly notes that the selection of the appropriate project beta is based
