The carbonaceous reduction of manganese ore is an energy-intensive process that releases large amounts of pollutant gases. In an attempt to circumvent the greenhouse gas emissions, this research investigates hydrogen as an alternative reductant. The reduction of manganese ore with hydrogen results in the structural changes in the intermediate products, which might limit the diffusion of the reactant gases through the pores. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models capture the structural changes and predict the rate controlling mechanism and this is key in designing the prereduction reactors. The current work uses CFD models to predict the degree of reduction in a shaft furnace under hydrogen reducing conditions. Manganese ore is described as a collection of scalar and tensor fields such as thermal conductivity of the porous medium, density, and viscous resistance. The results indicate that advection contributes significantly towards the overall transport of hydrogen to the reaction sites. Porosity of the final product was found to be higher than porosity of the raw material.

Precision surface mining is gaining traction in the iron ore, copper, iodine, limestone, bauxite, coal and gypsum markets. In this paper, we first address the possible improvements of a surface miner control using GPS techniques. An application in an iron ore mine in Western Australia is presented. The second item addressed is improvements of a new drum driving technique for a 100 ton surface miner. This technique involves installing a slow speed hydrostatic motor directly on the cutting drum rather than driving the drum through chain and sprockets. Details of the performance of this direct-drive versus the chain-drive are detailed. In addition to the 100 ton machine, we also present a 200 ton surface miner. This larger machine has 1600 hp (894.8 kg), and has been successfully introduced into a large iron ore mine in Western Australia. Performance of the 200 ton surface mining machine in various rock hardnesses is detailed. Some comments on the cost effectiveness of using a built-in loader versus loading with wheel loaders are included.

This study compares the cementation performance of metallic iron, metallic aluminum, and metallic tin in terms of the reaction conditions and parameters in synthetic antimony chloride solutions. The effects on the antimony recovery (%) caused by the cementators’ types, stirring speed, reaction time, and temperatures were explored thoroughly. The cementation kinetics of antimony were also explored for each cementator. The activation energies were determined to be 10.99, 9.09, and 13.58 kJ mol– 1 for Al, Fe, and Sn, respectively. The results reveal that the reaction is diffusion controlled, and comparable results were obtained for each cementator. At 25 °C, 40 mg of iron powder was found to reduce all antimony ions (i.e., approx. 99% recovery), but even when 100 mg of Al and Sn cementators were used, the antimony recovery did not reach 100%. This result shows that iron is the best candidate to cement antimony out of the solution.

The term "finite element analysis" is heard and seen in print a great deal these days; a few words on what precisely it is are in order. In the broadest sense, finite element analysis is an application of an idea developed by a nineteenth century mathematician named Rayleigh. His basic idea was to decompose any problem in mathematical physics into a large number of simpler problems, solve the simpler problems, and then put those solutions together to form an approximation to the solution of the original problem. The scheme works nicely because of two features: first, much of the difficulty in solving practical problems of mathematical physics stems from irregularities in the boundaries and the simpler problems can be chosen with regular boundaries and second the smaller problems are solved for small physical areas where simple approximations of the solution do not differ much from the true solution. In the narrower sense, in which we are now interested, finite element analysis is a technique of using imaginary simple structural elements to construct analytical models of real structures. A direct parallel with the Rayleigh approach exists since the "finite elements" have simple boundaries and are restricted to simple behavior within a single element. Although the correspondence between Rayleigh's ideas and finite element analysis is now widely recognized, the computational tool, as it has developed over the last thirty years, comes not from the discipline of physics but rather from that of structural engineering. The petroleum industry is confronted with the problem of conservalion. This is not a simple problem in view of a wide difference of opinion among authorities as to whether conservation is necessary and the specific direction that it should take. Many writers accuse the petroleum industry of wasting the natural resources of the country. Others link the consuming public with the industry in this waste. Let us define our terms; agree, if possible, on where and when waste occurs in connection with either the recovery or use of petroleum and select such plans for conservation as appear most practical. A plan for conserv3tion which appears to be logical today may not meet the problem tomorrow. The conservation of petroleum is closely linked with the advancement of marly arts and sciences and as these advance, the plan of conservation has to change. The need for conservation does not necessarily rest upon the elimination of waste. There is not necessarily a fixed connection between waste and conservation. Conservation may be necessary or desirable although there is no waste. Definitions Waste: Useless or unnecessary expenditure. Conservation: The preservation of the natural resources for economical use. Both definitions contain adjectives the interpretation of which is extremely difficult. It is the determination of what expenditures are "unnecessary" or what uses are "economical" that will require study and agreement. If one lets his automobile engine run in cold weather in order to keep it hot, it is difficult to measure that necessity. If an automobile is driven two blocks, when the driver is physically capable of walking, what is the measure of necessity. This question is in the realm of one of the oldest of sociological problems, "What is a luxury?"—a problem which has not been solved. The history of society indicates that the measure of a man's wealth has been the measure of necessity. What he can afford to buy without stinting himself in some other direction, is not a luxury to him and, if it fulfills his desires, may be considered his necessity.

"The combination of A C induction motor and flu id coupling, of either the fixed or variable filling type, constitutes a simple, low cost, highly reliable drive unit, with many applications in the mining field.The paper will, however, concentrate on the variable filling fluid coupling in three principal applications-conveyor starting, infinitely variable speed control for slurry and slimes pumping and dewatering pumps for deep mines. Fluid couplings can be used with standard or custom-built control gear equipment, ranging from the most simple, time-based open loop types, to those having the latest microprocessor techniques.IntroductionThe first industrial applications of fluid couplings included their use in the mining field as hydraulic slip regulators for flywheel generating sets. These installations, usually rated at around 1700 to 2500 hp, were located at mine shafts where the electrical grid transmission lines were not strong enough to cater for the peak power demands of the cage winding cycle. In Canada, the first two significant examples of variable filling fluid couplings for mining were on conveyor drives, at Steep Rock Mines Limited, closely followed by the major iron ore handling term inal on the St. Lawrence River at Sept-Iles. Successful and reliable operat ion of the fluid couplings at these two sites set the pattern for use on many subsequent mining projects throughout the Canadian Continent."

An evaluation was made to determine the economics of utilizing waste fluosilicic acid for production of (1) calcium fluoride, and (2) anhydrous hydro-gen fluoride. Two versions of each process were considered and compared. The evaluation showed that both products could be produced and marketed competitively. Lowest estimated product sales prices required to yield a 25-percent return on investment before taxes (discounted cash flow basis) was $339.34 per ton of hydrogen fluoride and $48.64 per ton of calcium fluoride.

The objectives of this study were to document the hydrologic impacts of longwall mining on streams, identify the factors affecting the extent of stream dewatering, and develop empirical trends to predict the extent of dewatering and recovery of streams in advance of mining. This study on stream impacts is a companion to a stud; conducted on ground water impacts from longwall mining, which was done as part of the same research project at the' same locations and times. The study areas are three mine sites in north- central West Virginia. Mine A, located in Upshur County, has relatively thin mine overburden under the valley streams (105-115 feet). Stream monitoring there continued the earlier work of Cifelli and Rauch (1). Stream dewatering was severe with streams often going dry over the longwall panels during baseflow conditions. The lost water was probably flowing to the mine. Dewatering began in streams over the mine entry areas adjacent to the panels and as much as 380 feet from the nearest panel edge. The angles of dewatering influence ranged 22 to 72 degrees with respect to the nearest mined panel edge. Discharge then typically increased as the streams- flowed across the panel edge, but then decreased again over the panels. These streams were often ponded by local reversals in hydraulic gradient caused by land subsidence, and often dried up after flowing a few hundred feet across the panels. This occurred over panels that were previously mined up to eight months before. Mine B, located in Monongalia County, has relatively thick mine overburden (475-485 - feet) under the major stream. Stream dewatering was severe there during warm season baseflows, with complete dewatering occurring then over the longwall panels. This dewatering occurred over mined panels up to five years old, probably in response to a major anticlinal axis lineament and fracture zone in the stream valley. Mine C. located on the West Virginia -Pennsylvania border, has relatively thick mine overburden (about 585-630 feet) under the monitored streams there. stream dewatering was only partial, and these streams typically recovered their lost discharge downstream of the mine, indicating that lost water was not recharging to the mine. Only longwall panels less than one year old were associated with stream dewatering.

INVESTIGATION of the nickel-rich end of the Ni-Zr system has been prompted by an interest in the effect of small amounts of zirconium in high temperature alloys. Hansenl presents a hypothetical diagram based on the work of Allibone and Sykes,2 who investigated the system up to 44 atomic pct (55 wt pct) Zr by metallographic means. Since the alloys they used were melted in Alundum crucibles they were probably contaminated with appreciable amounts of aluminum. They found two compounds which they called Ni3Zr and Ni4Zr. Hayes, Roberson, and Paasche3 identified a compound NiZr (50 atomic pct Zr) with a melting point of 1470°C. Such a high melting compound is not compatible with the observation of Allibone and Sykes2 hat a eutectic is formed near 50 atomic pct. The alloys containing up to 60 atomic pct Zr were melted in an inert atmosphere in a noncon-sumable electrode arc furnace. Analysis of most of the alloys indicated negligible loss of zirconium. The alloys were examined in the as-cast condition and also after annealing for 6 hr at 1175°C (or 1000°C for the alloys between 25 atomic pct and 45 atomic pct). Metallographic specimens were etched using mixtures of HF-HNO3-H2O or acetic acid- HN0,-H,O. The specimens for the solidus determinations were wrapped in molybdenum foil and sealed in evacuated quartz tubes. Specimens to be heated above 1300°C were enclosed in zirconia tubes inside the quartz to prevent reaction with molybdenum. The solidus determinations were carried out by heating the specimens at various temperatures for a few minutes and then examining the interior structure metallographically to determine at what temperature melting began. The 150 mesh powders for X-ray analysis were annealed in an evacuated quartz tube for 2 hr at 540 °C to remove cold work. Alloys with 22.5 atomic pct Zr and 44.4 atomic pct Zr required annealing at 700 °C for complete recovery. The grains of both of these alloys were soft and rather ductile. Both Debye-Scherrer film patterns and spectrometer traces were made for each alloy using filtered copper radiation. Results and Discussion The presence of a substantial amount of second phase in an alloy with 1.1 atomic pct Zr indicated that the solid solubility of zirconium in nickel is somewhat less than 1 atomic pct. The a0 value for the face-centered-cubic matrix in the same alloy was equal to that of pure nickel, so that the solubility must be very small. This observation is as expected from the large atom size difference. Annealed specimens of alloys with 15.0, 16.7, 22.5, 28.6, 44.4, and 59.4 atomic pct Zr showed. micro-structures that were essentially single phase. When

Austria.—Austria produced some 430 cisterns of 10,000 kg. each of crude oil of a 0.9428 sp. gr. during 1934. Gosting II well near Zis-tersdorf was placed on the pump in August and at the end of the year was still producing about three cisterns daily. This well is owned by the Erdöl-Produktionsgesellschaft while Gösting I is owned by Raky-Danubia. Only five wells were completed in the republic during the year. These accounted for 1783.5 meters of the 2225 meters drilled. The only producer completed was Gosting 11. At the close of the year, four rigs were in operation and one rigging up. At least 8 or 10 new wells are planned in Lower Austria for 1935. The European Gas & Electric Co. put its 6-km. gas line into operation in May and has sold 12,301,550 cu. m. of gas to the Vienna City Electric Works. A 2-km. pipe line was built from Gösting II to the railway loading rack near Zistersdorf. Hungary.—No oil or gas was produced except a small amount of gas trapped from flowing artesian wells. The Government completed and abandoned a 1500-m. hole at Tisztaberek in northeastern Hungary and is drilling at 967 m. near Bogáes, 120 km. northeast of Budapest. It is unofficially reported it plans to drill two new wells in 1935. The European Gas & Electric Co. has a rig up for a test at Mihalyi in Transdanubia. Czechoslovakia.—In Gbely (Egbell) there were produced 1283 cisterns of 10,000 kg. of 0.935 sp. gr. oil and a small amount of gas used for fuel. This field is operated by the Government; 17 shallow producing wells and three dry holes were drilled, with a total of 3351 m. of hole completed. In Hodonin (Goding) there were produced approximately 1300 cisterns of 10,000 kg. each of 0.91 sp. gr. oil and a small amount of gas used for fuel. The field is operated by the Apollo, which drilled four producing wells averaging 460 m. in depth, one small gas well of 550 m., one small gas well 260, and one dry hole 230 m. Two wells were deepened a total of 80 meters. The Government is drilling below 800 m. in a wildcat test in eastern Czechoslovakia near the Rumanian frontier.

Remnants of Plio-Pleistocene hot spring systems in Northland, New Zealand contain sulfide minerals, principally pyrite, marcasite and cinnabar. The climate is warm temperate to subtropical, with up to 3 m of rainfall per annum, and rocks are deeply weathered. Decomposition of the iron sulfides in natural outcrops and human excavations results in acid rock drainage with pH typically between 2 and 5, and locally down to pH 1. Deeply weathered basement greywacke is clay-rich and has negligible neutralisation capacity. Some overlying volcanic flows have resisted weathering, and pH is kept near neutral by relict secondary calcite in small areas. Natural rainforest soils commonly have pH between 4 and 5 over mineralised and unmineralised greywacke. Mineralised zones are enriched in arsenic, which occurs in solid solution (up to 1 wt per cent) in sulfides and phosphate minerals. Mercury also occurs in solid solution in some of these minerals, as well as in cinnabar. Base metals are present in low (background) concentrations only. Decomposition of the iron sulfides and phosphates releases the solid solution arsenic and mercury into the acid rock drainage solutions. Arsenic is readily adsorbed on to iron oxyhydroxides formed in acid rock drainage situations, and can be effectively removed from the biosphere. However, this arsenic is released back into the environment if the pH rises, as adsorbed oxyanions become less strongly bound and are displaced by hydroxyl ions. Behaviour of dissolved mercury is similar to that of arsenic but less well understood in these settings. Both arsenic and mercury are readily leached into pH 6 solutions from solid material collected from acid rock drainage sites. These observations suggest that neutralisation of acid rock drainage sites is undesirable in this setting, as arsenic and mercury will become more mobile in the environment. The naturally low pH of 4 to 5 of the forest floor, or even lower pH of natural acid rock drainage, is a preferable management option.

Slope stability analysis plays an integral role in the design of various mining applications including waste dumps, heap leach piles, solution ponds, and tailings dams. Generally, limit equilibrium analysis using one of the several prevalent approaches is considered adequate. The density, saturation, and shear strength parameters of the materials forming the slope affect the failure mode and the calculated factor of safety (FS) against sliding. These parameters are generally based on laboratory tests. Field practices and construction procedures are often not completely simulated in the laboratory for various reasons (e.g. equipment limits, time and budget restraints, etc.). This paper presents a holistic assessment of slope stability analysis as practiced in mining applications, using example data from multiple heap leach projects. A sensitivity analysis is presented for variations in material properties, data interpretation, and computation methods. For each step in the design process, the possible variations in parameter values were identified and then used to perform traditional and probabilistic stability analyses. This simple, cradle-to-grave-type approach is used to evaluate the reliability of an example design, and the combined impact of multiple uncertainties on the factor of safety. Example Study The issue of addressing uncertainty in geotechnical design has been discussed in depth by numerous authors (Duncan 2000; Christian 2004; Whitman 1984; Christian et al. 1993). One may ignore the uncertainties involved in a design, take a conservative approach, rely on observational methods (Peck 1969), or attempt to quantify the uncertainty. Geotechnical projects in general, may include a combination of these methods. For important structures, such as heap leach pads, it is critical that sources of uncertainty in the stability analysis be acknowledged early on and considered in the overall design approach. As with any project, economics and other physical constraints, such as space limitation, often do not always allow for an overly-conservative, robust design. In an effort to quantify uncertainty and provide a sense of level of confidence in the safety and reliability of a design, probabilistic methods have been developed and implemented in many slope stability software packages. Reliability methods are often used in the design of open pit mine slopes, but not as commonly in designing heap leach pads and waste dumps. As an example, the stability analysis of a copper heap leach project is presented here to evaluate the effects of multiple sources of uncertainty and differing methods of data interpretation. Some of the parametric values, or the variation therein, are assumed on the basis of actual data from multiple heap leach projects, included in the paper as well. A generic representation of the example case study is shown in Figure 1. As depicted in the cross-section, the ultimate height of the design is 114 m (measured from the crest to the toe). The overall slope of the heap leach pad is 1.88 horizontal to 1 vertical (1.88H:1V), or 28°. The slope benches are considered in the overall slope. The example leach pad is founded on alluvial, colluvial and residual soils overlying weathered limestone. The ore to be placed on the pad is characterized as poorly graded gravel (GP) with average fines content (percent passing #200 sieve) of 4%. The liner subgrade is low permeability (fine) soil. The cover or the drainage material, placed directly above the geomembrane (between the liner and the ore), is crushed ore in this case. The phreatic surface was assumed to be 1 m above the base liner, which is what the collection system over the liner is typically designed for. [ ] In heap leach pads, typically, Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) or High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is used as the base liner. The decision is based on the elongation, strength and other requirements of the application as well as economic considerations. In this example study, the base liner was 80-mil single-side textured LLDPE. FIELD INVETIGATION AND SAMPLING When selecting appropriate values for the input parameters of the stability analysis, the level of uncertainty in the data and the assumptions that are made must be clearly identified and considered in the design. This concept has been emphasized through an extensive number of publications regarding geotechnical uncertainty and reliability (Christian et al. 1994; Duncan 2000; Christian 2004). The primary source of uncertainties involved in slope stability analysis for mining applications is inadequate geotechnical investigation, often lacking in a thorough assessment of in-situ material characterization and sampling disturbances. To emphasize this point, some background information is presented here. The tradeoff between the costs of a thorough site investigation versus the risks of design uncertainty has long been a challenging management decision in geotechnical projects. For mine sites, significant investment is typically made in exploration and estimating mineral resources and the geology of a mine site is often more thoroughly documented than other types of geotechnical projects. Nevertheless, the engineering properties of the soil and rocks relevant to slope stability receive less emphasis. Baecher and Christian (2003) observed that the areas of geotechnical concern, such as slopes and waste disposal facilities, are usually associated with mine costs rather than revenue, and therefore, significantly less money is devoted to their site characterization and laboratory testing. Ausmelt furnace slag contains about 0.9% Cu (mass %). With increasing the amount of Ausmelt furnace slag, the recovery of copper from it will produce an enormous economic yield. The recovery of copper by floatation from slow cooled Ausmelt furnace slag was studied in this paper. The phases and composition of the slow cooled slag were analyzed. The factors which affected the copper recovery efficiency such as grinding fineness, pH value of flotation medium, different collectors and floating process were investigated. It was shown that the size distribution of the primary grinding and secondary grinding of middling were 75% for particles less than 0.074mm and 82% for particles less than 0.043mm respectively. The closedcircuit experimental results with butyl xanthate as collector in laboratory showed that the copper grade reached 16.11% and the recovery rate of copper reached 69.90% and the copper grade of tailings was only 0.2%.

Coal mines comprised 14.7% of all mining operations. • Bituminous mines comprised 92.0% (n=1,972) and anthracite mines 8.0% (n=172) of coal mining operations. • More than 71% of coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (29.5%), West Virginia (21.3%), and Pennsylvania (20.6%).

This Bureau of Mines investigation was conducted to determine the appropriate quantities of rare-earth methals (REM) in the form of silicides to add to an alloy steel for the purpose of increasing toughness and ductility. The work was conducted in a vacuum induction furnace with the rare-earth additions required to deoxidize and desulfurize a simulated basic oxygen furnace (BOF) vacuum-degassed steel initially containing 0.013 to 0.016 percent sulfur. The product proved to be as good or better than the best basic electric furnace steel of the same composition made by the steel industry. Twenty-three experimental heats of 5 Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel were made, cast into 50-1b ingots, and hot-worked in a press and a rolling mill to ½ inch plates which were then heat-treated to 130/150 ksi4 yield strength. Impact and tension tests showed that the addition of 0.025 to 0.100 percent, or ½ to 2 lb per ton, respectively, of rare-earth metals when compounded with silicon were appropriate for increasing toughness and ductility. These quantities resulted in retained cerium contents between 0.014 to 0.025 percent, and increased the Charpy V-notch energy absorption and the percent reduction of area significantly as compared with base heats at the same sulfur content levels. All the test heats, including those with additions of REH of as much as 4 lb/ton, had greater Charpy V-notch energy absorption values than the base composition could have developed at the starting sulfur range of 0.013-0.016 wt pct.

[Available statistics show that the demands of the American chemical industry for sodium sulphate have been increasing slightly in recent years. The supply from domestic sources, particularly in the form of byproduct salt cake from the acid manufacturers, has been tending to decease due to the growing manufacture of synthetic acid. Both hydrochloric and nitric acids are being synthesized from their elements. The natural result has been that a smaller amount of salt cake is available. Simultaneously, the expansion of the Kraft-paper industry, especially in Lie South, has brought about greater demand for sodium sulphate in that section. This demand is being met by domestic byproduct salt cake, by imported German sodium sulphate made from potash waste liquors, and by favorably situated domestic deposits of Glauber salts and tile anhydrous salt, thenardite. No shortage of natural sodium sulphate exists in the United States, but usually such deposits occur in semiarid regions far re¬moved from transportation facilities and from markets. Moreover, the major portion of the natural deposits is Glauber salt or mirabilite (Na2SO4?10H20), which must be dried or dehydrated in order to most consumer requirements. The waters of hydration represents, roughly, 55 percent of tae total weight of the crude salts and therefore has a very important influence on transportation costs. In marry instances the cost of getting even the dehydrated product to market is the deciding economic factor.
