The Krueger property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in September 1943. The records of 23 old drill holes indicated an appreciable body of ore without delimiting the deposit. It appeared that additional drilling might increase this reserve sufficiently to justify mining. Accordingly, the Bureau of Mines drilled 5 churn-drill holes and 19 diamond-drill holes on the Krueger tract. The last of these holes concluding the Bureau?s project was completed in April 1947.

Perovskite structured oxide 15% Y-doped BaCeO3 (BCY15) has been evaluated for use as proton conducting electrolyte in SOFC with propane as the fuel and Pt as both electrodes. Under the fuel cell conditions, BCY15 exhibited high proton conductivity and good cell performances. Propylene was detected as product at the anode outlet, and the product distribution suggests that propane dehydrogenation underwent competition with cracking to lighter hydrocarbons. Stability during cell performance tests showed that there was no obvious degradation for BCY15 electrolyte during operation of C3H8-O2 fuel cell.

"Earth levees constructed using dredged materials taken from a river along an earth levee have annually damaged in the Mekong Delta due to high void spacing in earth levees and floodwater. Sliding and internal erosion due to floodwater or piping are two key factors causing earth levees’ failures. This study proposed to apply Deep Mixing Method (DMM) to reinforce earth levees in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The DMM creates a soil cement wall or soilcrete wall having better engineering properties such as higher strength and low hydraulic conductivity than those of the in-situ soils. The DMM can be applied to reinforce earth levees with limit additional materials that provinces in the Mekong Delta are difficult to supply. The study investigates capacity of the DMM to reinforce earth levees in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam against annual floods. Seepage and slope stability analyses under various conditions were performed with various scenarios of earth levee’s body. The analysis results indicate that the DMM can create a wall that cuts off piping across earth levee significantly and can improve stability against deep sliding due to rapid drawdown of the floodwater.INTRODUCTIONThe Mekong Delta produces agriculture products of 50% of the whole country even though the Mekong Delta has an agriculture area of 30% of the country (Wikipedia 2014). Rice is the main product for the domestic demand and export. This is the main reason why the local people want to cultivate rice 3 times per year to increase the total rice product for export. To do that, the local provinces have constructed earth levees surrounding each area of 100-200-hectare against annual floods to protect rice fields, and farmers can grow rice in the whole year. There are thousands of kilometers long earth levees in the Mekong Delta, and the local governments have spent millions of US dollars to repair and to maintain their earth levees yearly (reports of Dong Thap province 2012; 2014).Earth levees in the Mekong Delta have often failed in flood seasons (e.g., from August to December), especially in Dong Thap and An Giang provinces – the two provinces confronting directly the annual floods from the Mekong River when the floods reach the Vietnam land. The main failure of earth levees is piping, and then causing collapse of some section of an earth levee. An earth levee was usually constructed by piling up dredged materials along a river with minimum compaction. Subsequently, floodwater flows through connected void spacing and washes out soil particles in the body of an earth levee slowly to create piping. Annual wet-dry cycles make the top clay layer swelling and shrinking to form cracks that can store rainwater to trigger sliding (whitlow 2001; Ton That Vinh 2003)."

In recent years, there have been many articles and papers written on the use of specially designed belt conveyor systems in mining operations, either economic studies or actual experience. These papers generally conclude that the use of these systems can reduce overall costs from 10% to 40% over conventional methods using general purpose equipment (truck/shovel, scrapers, etc.). However, they also generally conclude that conveyor systems are inflexible and capital intensive. With the increasing cost of mobile equipment, the capital cost conclusion is losing steam, particularly when the costs of maintenance shops, road and ramp construction and other related start-up costs are thrown in. Attention here will be focused on answers to flexibility related questions, but first, a look at costs in general. Basic production economics tell us that when we have a small job to do, it is cost effective to use simple, low cost, general purpose tools which will have a minimum impact on total cost. It also tells us that when we have a large project, we can employ methods using special, relatively expensive production tools. Figure 1 illustrates what occurs on projects, of different sizes, with various quantities of production. With small quantities of work, the cost per unit of work starts out much lower using general purpose equipment, rather than using special purpose methods and equipment. However, at a relatively low quantity of work, the cost hits a lower limit and, regardless of how great the quantity of work, the unit cost can never go any lower.

The practice of dust abatement or control is not new to any operation of United States Steel Corporation. This report will review those activities, past and present, within the five operating districts of United States Steel-Coal Operations with specific reference to mechanical and continuous mining, and including both the health and safety aspects of the problem. Obviously, the first principle of dust control is to inhibit its formation If this is not practical, steps may be taken to prevent its becoming airborne. Airborne dust control can be realized by either collecting it at the point of generation, diluting it with large volumes of air to reduce concentration, settling it by various means, or with reference to ignition hazard only, render it incombustible by neutralization with an inert material. These basic principles have been verified by the work of many, including the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of Interior, Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., and the Mining Research Establishment of the National Coal Board of Great Britain. Their application to every day mining problems is best illustrated by the following examples.

Discussion of the paper of F. C. LANGENBERG and R. G. WEBBER, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February, 1915, pp. 291 to 300. HENRY M. HOWE, Bedford Hills, N. Y.-The results here given are of great interest and are welcome as forming another rivet to increase the stability of our present theories of the constitution and properties of steel. The important discovery is that the hysteresis increases with the fineness of the structure, that is to say with the extent of contact between the particles of ferrite and cementite. All of the specimens except No. 4 consist of ferrite and cementite of different degrees of intimacy of admixture. If hysteresis represents something akin to surface friction, which retards the rotation of the ferrite on the application and release of the magnetizing force, then it is only natural that it should increase as it does with the intimacy of admixture, because it is at the surface of contact of a given particle of ferrite with the neighboring particles of cementite that this friction is to be expected, and of course the extent of surface must in¬crease with the intimacy of admixture. The somewhat greater hardness of specimen 4 than of the others may perhaps he referred to the principle discussed in my paper, Why Does Lag Increase with the Temperature from Which Cooling Starts?' The furnace-cooled specimens were cooled so slowly that the influence of the initial temperature of heating is effaced. But in the air-cooled specimens we have the suggestion that the high temperature, 1,000°, from which the cooling of No. 4 started has prevented the completion of the transformation, with the result that the metal is slightly harder than any of the others. The difference is not to be explained by difference in the fineness of structure, because the whole range of fineness from No. 1 to No. 6 is accompanied by no change in hardness, the only change being an appreciable increase of hardness following the air cooling from 1,000°.

In this work, mesophilic and thermophilic cultures have been used in the presence of silver as a catalyst. Chalcopyrite and byproducts of bioleaching were characterized in order to: a) obtain information about the kinetics control of the process, and b) explain the different behaviour observed during the mineral attack. With thermophilic microorganisms (68°C and Norris medium as nutrient) the reaction stopped at approximately 65% copper extraction, with and without Ag ion addition as a catalyst. The remaining chalcopyrite appears surrounded by hydronium jarosite (with ammonium ion in substitution in the "alkaline site"), goethite and elemental sulphur. With mesophilic cultures (35°C and 9K medium as nutrient) the reaction stopped at approximately 25% copper extraction (without Ag) and approximately. 85% extraction (with Ag). In both cases, the remaining chalcopyrite was surrounded by agglomerates of ammonium jarosite (with hydronium ion substitution in the "alkaline site") and some iron oxides and/or hydroxides.

"Specularite and vanadium-titanomagnetite are difficult to granulate, and with the increase of their proportions, the permeability of sintering bed is deteriorated together with the combustion velocity of fuel for the shortage of air through the sintering bed, which can lower sintering speed and specific production capacity significantly. The biomass fuel has a higher combustion velocity than coke breeze, therefore the productivity of specularite and vanadium-titanomagnetite ore can be improved remarkably by replacing coke breeze partly with biomass fuel .The results showed that, when the proportion of biomass fuel replacing coke is 40%,the sintering speed and specific production capacity of 35% specularite were improved from 19.06mm/min, 1.33 t/(m2·h)to 21.45mm/min, 1.47 t/(m2·h),and that of 55% vanadium-titanomagnetite were improved from 17.23mm/min, 1.11 t/(m2·h)to 22.80mm/min, 1.44 t/(m2·h). As a conclusion, biomass fuel is effective to strengthen sintering of refractory iron ore.IntroductionThe iron and steel industry of our country has achieved significant development in the recent years. In 2010, the output of steel has reached to 0.627 billion tons. The increasing scale of iron and steel has led to rigorous domestic iron ore environment, and the reserves of hematite and magnetite that have superior sintering characteristics are on the decline with continually exploiting and utilizing [1]. Therefore, the RIO (refractory iron ores) SP (specularite) and VT (vanadium-titanomagnetite) have to be applied vastly. However, the quality of sinters can be deteriorated when utilizing RIO in high proportion due to their poor granulation and metallogenic performances [2, 3]. Generally, the ratio of SP is 3~5%,which should not exceed 10% in our country currently [4]. Though high rate of VT is adopted in PZH steel for a long time, the productivity is obviously low compared with normal sintering [5]."

The heats oj- formation at 0°C of the compounds AuSn,, AuSn2, AuSn, and the £ phase were measured in a metal -solution calorimeter with liquid tin or a liquid Sn-Bi alloy as solvent. The melting point, heat of fusion, and heat capacities near the melting point of- the compound AuSn in the solid and liquid state were measured in a constant temperature gradient calorimeter. The free energy and entropy of formation of the compound AuSn at its melting point and at 298 °K were calculated from the experimental results and published data. The heats of formation are discussed in relation to the nature of the compounds. The heat capacity below the melting point, heat of fusion, and entropy of fusion of AuSn are interpreted in terms of processes oc-curring before melting. The atomic arrangement in liquid Au-Sn alloys and the bonding in the intermediate phases of. the Au-Sn system are discussed in the light of the measured thermodynamic properties. THE available thermodynamic information on the intermediate phases in the Au-Sn system consists of the heats of formation of the compounds AuSn4, AuSn2, and AuSnly2 and of one composition of the < phase2 besides values of the heat content of the compound AuSn from 0" to 635".&apos; However, the heats of formation refer to different temperatures ringing from 90" to 450°C. Also, the reported error limits of some of the values are large and several inconsistencies are apparent. In the investigation reported here the heats of formation of the compounds AuS-, AuSnz, and AuSn and of three compositions of the < phase were determined for a single reference temperature of 0°C by liquid metal-solution calorimetry. The compound AuSn, which is the only congruently melting intermediate phase in this system, was further investigated in a constant temperature gradient calorimeter by measuring its heat of fusion, melting point, and heat capacity in the solid and liquid states near the melting point. From these data and published free energies of the liquid of composition Au~n,&apos; the free energies of formation of the compound AuSn at the melting point and at 298°K were calculated. The results shed light on the solid-liquid transition of AuSn and on the atomic bonding and state of association of gold and tin in the solid and liquid phases. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES 1.1) Preparation of Samples. Stoichiometric amounts of gold and tin, each 99.99+ pct pure, were melted in evacuated Vycor capsules (12 mm ID). The melts were maintained approximately 150°C above the liquidus for about 12 hr and shaken repeatedly. Samples of the compound AuSn were cooled slowly to room temperature. Melts of the other phases, all of which solidify by peritectic reactions, were transferred to the narrow end (5 mm ID) of the capsule, which was then quenched into iced brine. The solidified samples were annealed in the unopened capsules for 10 days at 30" to 50° C below the respective solidus temperatures. The absence of microsegregation and second phases was confirmed by metallographic examination. At least two batches of each composition were prepared. 1.2) Solution Calorimetry. The heats of formation were determined by liquid metal-solution calorimetry. In this technique, the difference between the heat effects on dissolution in a liquid metal, or alloy bath, of the compound and a mechanical mixture of its annealed components, adjusted for changes in composition of the bath, is the heat of formation of the compound at the temperature from which the samples are added. Details of the equipment and technique have been described."&apos; A tin bath at 300" or 350°C was used with the compounds AuSn,, AuSnz, and AuSn. The high gold content of the £ phase would have caused it to dissolve with an appreciable exothermic heat effect. In order to achieve thermal compensation, the samples were added from 0°C to a bath at 350°C consisting of 66.2 wt pct Bi (99.999+ pct pure), balance Sn (99.99+ pct pure). This solvent gives thermal compensation because gold dissolves exothermically in tin and endothermically in bismuth. The calorimeter was calibrated by adding from 0°C approximately 0.015 g-atom of the solvent.

Silver-copper-lead deposlts in Precambrian, Permian, and Cretaceous red-bed sequences near Van Horn, Texas, have the following features In common: (1) mineralization controlled by steeply dipping fractures in sandstones, (2) lack of ore In overlying and interbedded limestones, (3) absence of igneous intrusions, (4) sulfide ores without typical hydrothermal gangue minerals, and (5) associated arsenic, molybdenum, zinc, and cadmium but not gold. Ore was probably deposited along fractures by reaction between low-temperature, oxidizing, metal-rich ground waters and sulfide-bearing waters or rocks. Detailed mapping and studies of fracture patterns indicate that mineralization occurred during Basin and Range extensional deformation, thereby postdating major Trans-Pecos igneous activity.

The Ohio Valley Coal Company is expand- ing its Powhatan Mine No. 6 near Alledonia, Ohio. This expansion includes a 20 rn (65 ft) height in crease for an existing 44 rn (145 ft) coal refuse - slurry impoundment dam. The dam is being raised by upstream construction which will involve placement of more than 15 m (50 ft) of new fill over an existing reinforced concrete decant structure. This structure is 0.76 rn (30 in.) square inside and its deepest portion was under 24 m (80 ft) of coal slurry and water. The top of the decant structure was not strong enough to safely support the new fill and, because of the slurry and water, there was no way to reinforce the structure from the outside. The structure was reinforced frorn the inside by sliplining 73 m (240 ft) of 0.66 rn (26 in.) OD, 0.53 rn (21 in.) ID polyethylene pipe, grouting around this pipe with cellular concrete. and constructing a steel-fiber reinforced micro-silica concrete transition at the upslope end of the pipe. Rehabilition of the decant structure was completed in August 1989. The rehabilitated decant structure is now performing satisfactorily as fill is being placed over it for raising the dam.

Recent studies on the determination of hydrogen in steel have shown that the hot-extraction method for removing hydrogen from a solid sample is preferable to its removal from a molten sample by vacuum fusion or by fusion in vacuum with tin. A number of techniques are available, however, for determining the hydrogen so extracted. They include: thermal conductivity, gas chromatography, pressure measurement before and after catalytic oxidation of the hydrogen to water and removal of the water, and pressure measurement before and after diffusion of the hydrogen through a palladium membrane. These techniques have been evaluated on the basis of initial cost, maintenance, speed and accuracy of analysis, and applicable concentration range. The results of this study showed that the palladium-membrane technique is best suited for routine use. FOR some time investigators have been concerned with the origin, form, and effect of hydrogen in steel. In such stdies&apos;, the analysis for hydrogen constitutes one of the most important phases. It is quite apparent that the results for hydrogen concentrations in a given steel are dependent on the method of obtaining the sample, storage of the sample until analysis, preparation of the sample, and analysis of the sample, including all the facets inherent in the calibration and operation of an apparatus for gas analysis. There are a number of means available for determining hydrogen. This is a critical study of some of the more common techniques in use today. In most conventional melting and casting methods, hydrogen concentrations of 4 to 6 parts per million (ppm) in steel are quite common. Because of the undesirable effects of hydrogen on steel there has been increased use of techniques such as vacuum melting,&apos; vacuum casting, and ladle-to-ladle stream degassing, which lower the hydrogen content to levels on the order of 1 to 2 ppm. Therefore, the method used for determining hydrogen in steel must be sensitive and precise. In any analytical procedure for gases in metals there are two distinct operations—the extraction of the gas from the metal and the analysis of the extracted gas. To extract the gas from the steel, three methods have been employed: 1) fusion of the sample with graphite at high temperature; 2) fusion with a flux, such as tin, at a lower temperature; and 3) extraction of the hydrogen from the solid sample at a temperature below the melting point of the steel. Fusion with graphite is the least-acceptable method. The blank in this method is higher and more variable than in either of the other two methods. The hydrogen fraction of the total gas composition usually is between 10 and 50 pct; thus, a larger analytical error is possible. The vacuum-tin fusion4 extraction of hydrogen is probably the most rapid method in use today; the extraction time is usually about 10 min. However, with this system a bake-out of the freshly charged tin for 2 hr is necessary and a change of crucible and a charge of fresh tin are required after each day of operation whether one or thirty samples have been analyzed. In addition, frequent checks of blank rates are required since CO and Na are continually being given up by the steel samples dissolved in the tin bath. The composition of the gas in this method lends itself readily to analysis; although the hydroge concentration may fall to as low as 50 pct, more often it is above 90 pct, thus allowing a more precise analysis (because of less interference from other gases). In 1940 ewell&apos; published the hot-extraction method for extracting hydrogen from the solid sample, comparing analysis for hydrogen extracted at 600°C with similar analysis for the gas extracted at 1700°C by fusion with graphite. Good agreement for hydrogen was obtained between these two methods, provided sufficient time was allowed for extraction at the lower temperature. carsone obtained good results in his comparison of this hot-extraction method with vacuum-tin fusion. Subsequent work by Geller and sun7 and Hill and ohnson&apos; has shown that steel samples should be heated to at least 800°C to effect the release not only of the diffusible hydrogen but also of the "residual" hydrogen that may be present as methane. Since the rate of evolution of hydrogene9l0 depends on such factors as sample size and composition, thermal history, and extent of cold work, a fixed extraction time is not possible. A complete swies of solid solutions has been found between the compounds InAs and GaAs Below the solidus. The melting relations determined by differential thermal and static quenching technzques, indicate that the liquidus and solidus are of the simple ascendant type. No evidence of unmixing of the homogeneous solid solutions was observed at sub-solidus temperatures. A quenching method for locnting the solidus, using X-ray diffraction techniques, is described in some detail. THE semi-conducting properties of compounds formed by various combinations of the less familiar intermetallic elements have created an increasing interest in the phase relations in systems involving these elements. The complete phase diagram of such a system, containing a compound of special interest, will often provide information as to the most favorable conditions for preparing large crystals from a melt, as well as specifying the temperature stability of the crystalline phase or phases produced. In view of the current importance of gallium arsenide in semiconductor research and of the structural similarities of indium arsenide, it was thought that the complete phase relations of the system InAs-GaAs should be investigated. Previous work on the system Ga-As by Koster and homa&apos; and on In-As by Liu and peretti2 has shown that GaAs and InAs are the only compounds formed, having melting points of 1238° and 942°C, respectively. In a survey of various systems of elements from groups IIIb and Vb, spengler3 also re- Mines Ltd., for his continuing encouragement and for permission to publish the results of this work. ports complete miscibility of gallium, indium, and arsenic in the liquid state. In a partial investigation of the InAs-GaAs system, Woolley and smith4 found extensive solid solution throughout the alloy range. Their subsolidus work, however, was inconclusive at temperatures below 900" and they did not determine the liquidus relationships of the system. PRESENT INVESTIGATION The starting materials used were high-purity gallium, indium, and arsenic. The method of preparation of the compounds follows that devised by M. Shafer and is described in detail in a paper by Shafer and eiser.&apos; The end-member compounds, GaAs and InAs, were first prepared by reaction of the elements in the desired proportions in evacuated silica glass vials. The vials were rotated in a furnace as the temperature was slowly raised to insure rapid and complete reaction at low temperatures. Thereafter the starting materials, GaAs and InAs, were melted by heating the sealed vials to 1300" and 1000°C, respectively; the vials in this case were filled as completely as possible to keep the vapor space small and thereby minimize the loss of arsenic to the vapor phase. Ten binary mixtures of these compounds were then prepared by reaction of the powdered material in the solid state just below solidus temperatures. At 900C preparations containing 3, 5, 8, 10, 25, 35, 50, and 75 mol pct GaAs were found to be single homogeneous phases, indicating a complete series of solid solutions between GaAs and InAs. Moreover, it was discovered that the homogeneity of any crystalline binary preparation could be very accurately checked by X-ray diffraction because of the large differences in unit cell dimensions of the end membe5s. The cubic lattice constant ofor GaAs is a = 5.652A and that of InAs is a = 6.061A

MOST of the steel welding done at the present time is in material containing not over 0.3 per cent. carbon, and the tests here described were in similar material. These tests are not as yet completed but it is hoped that more results and more reasons for the conclusions may be presented at the meeting in February. From the time the author found the peculiar structure in electric welds referred to in a previous paper,1 that is, needles or plates in the grains and similar material, in larger spots, at the grain boundaries, he has felt that these plates which may be iron nitride and probably contain some carbon, were at least partly responsible for the brittleness of electric welds. He has found but few traces of similar lines in oxyacetylene welds until the last 2 mo., when he has found them in large numbers under certain conditions. In the top of these welds, they are quite numerous. In the body of heavy oxyacetylene welds, they appear at times, but not nearly to the extent that they do in electric welds; the author has never seen them in the body of welds in material less than ;3/4 in. (19 mm.) thick. They are shown in Fig. 82. The reason they were not noticed before is undoubtedly due to the fact that in making tests of welded pieces the weld was always ground off level with the plate, and as this structure only appears in the top ;1/16 in. (1.5 mm.) of the weld, they were removed by the grinding or machining; also, welds ¾ in. thick had not been examined. It did not appear, in making bending tests, that this structure had much influence on the strength of oxyacetylene welds; while electric welds are noticeably brittle. Further, oxyacetylene welds made with certain special materials were exceedingly brittle even after the tops of the welds were removed; this was true in cases where there was no sign of the plates whatever and where the welds were remarkably free from oxide and the other usual defects. "AbstractThe industry is confronted with stricter discharge levels and an increasing awareness to avoid toxic waste (such as heavy metal containing sludge obtained in physicochemical water treatment) and recover valuable metals. This can be realized by ion exchange or by electrodeposition. Both techniques however show an optimum concentration range to efficiently remove and/or recover metals: electrolysis can recover the metal in its metallic form but suffers from low efficiency when applied to diluted solutions, whereas ion exchange can only be applied economically in the low ppm range.A combination of ion exchange followed by electrodeposition was applied to an industrial wastewater. The strong acidic ion exchange resin was stripped with H2SO4 giving a solution of 9g/L nickel. From this solution, nickel was electrodeposited in an ammonia buffer on a Ti-mesh cathode with high current efficiency. It is shown that organic compounds (surfactants, brighteners, …) present in the industrial wastewater do not influence the recovery process.IntroductionAlmost all rinse waters emerging from metal plating plants are generated during the washing operation of plated materials. These solutions with low metal content must either be recycled within the process or be discarded to the surface water after decreasing their metal content to acceptable levels determined by the local environmental regulations, which become more and more stringent. Today, the most commonly used practice is a physico-chemical treatment (precipitation) and a resin post treatment to meet the standards. A more sustainable approach should use a technology to recover efficiently the metal or metal salt without the production of sludge and the effluent should be consistent with environmental regulations."
