A PERIOD of business depression and falling prices always raises questions as to the possible responsibility of the monetary or banking system. This is natural enough, for it is agreed that the supply of money or credit is a very important factor in modern business and in prices. However, it is far from being the only important factor. One of the chief merits of the gold standard is that under its workings the supply of currency and credit is regulated automatically to the masimun extent, in- stead of by the control of any arbitrary authority. The supply of new gold comes from the mines, and mining is free. It is distributed among the countries by the currents of trade and the play of economic forces, with the general result that the distribution tends to be in accordance with the economic development of the countries and their ability to use it or command it. Inasmuch as the accumulated stock of monetary gold is very large in comparison with the annual additions, the total avail- able supply changes but little from year to year, and it may be assumed that price-changes that are properly chargeable to gold will take place gradually rather than suddenly.

Wyoming contains many petroleum and natural-gas fields, and more than 250 geological structures have been mapped; however, only about 85 have been found (July 1938) to contain petroleum or natural gas, or both, in commercial quantities. To January 1938 approximately 434 million barrels of oil and 915 billion cubic feet of gas have been produced, and it was estimated that proved oil reserves in Wyoming amounted to 300 million barrels.' The Salt Creek field, the largest in the Rocky Mountain area, alone has produced 64 percent of the State's oil and 46 percent of its gas. This field ranked thirteenth among the producing fields of the United States in total cumulative production as of January 1, 1938. On this basis it ranks with the Kern River and Huntington Beach fields of California and the Butler County fields of Kansas. The Salt Creek field has declined in relative importance; in 1937, while still the largest oil-producing field in the State, it produced 31 percent of the oil and 11 percent of the gas extracted from all wells in Wyoming.

This study deals with the mineralogical-geochemical characteristics and the industrial usage of the olivine from the dunites that crop out on the west of the Topuk village (Orhaneli). Mineralogical compositions of non-altered dunite samples are averagely as: Olivine (>90%), serpentine (1-4 %), opaque minerals especially chromite, magnetite, pyrite (1-3 %), and secondary minerals as magnesite, chlorite (1-2 %). X-Ray Diffractograms of the dunite samples indicate that olivines are in forsterite (93 on an average) composition, and chlinochrysotile and lizardite accompany to the forsterite. Chemical analyses of the dunites show that MgO, SiO2, Fe-,03 and LOI contents vary from 40,99 to 50,2 %, 34,67 to 40,6 %, 6,8 tol3,7 %, 0,11 to 11,27 %, respectively. SE-TAT Mining Company states that the study area has 400.000.000 tonnes proved, 800.000.000 tonnes probable and totally 1.200.000.000 tonnes olivine reserve. Consequently, all studies indicate that Orhaneli Olivin has convenient mineralogical and chemical properties and the grain size (0.04-40 mm) for industrial usages such as abrasive, olivine sand products, steel slag conditioner, balast and covering material in industry: Orhaneli olivines are demanded especially from the firms related to refractory industry, iron-steel factories, naval forces and shipyards. SE-TAT Mining Company also exports these olivines to different countries such as Macedonian and Spain.

The Y-Al- C ternary phase diagram for the com -position range from 55 to 100 at. pct Y and for a temperature of 950°C has been constructed from metallographic and X-ray diffraction data. The significant features of the isothermal section which is presented are the small solubility of aluminum in the binary Y3C phase and the presence of a ternary carbide phase with a small homogeneity range around the composition Y3AlC. The similarity in structure and composition between these two carbide phases is discussed in the light of the misci-bility gap which exists between room temperature and 1300°C, which was the temperature range studied. THE occurrence and stability criteria of ternary T3BC, carbide phases having the L'12 structure and the general formula T3BCx have been discussed in detail by stadelmaier1 and more recently by the present authors., Stadelmaier found many representatives of these phases formed between the T metals Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni and the B metals Mg, Al, Zn, Ca, Ge, Cd, In, Sn, Hg, T1, and Pb. The present authors reported on a new series of iso-structural carbide phases formed between the T metals of the Sc group and the B metal, aluminum. These new phases are unique in that many of the Sc group elements form stable binary carbide phases which occur about the composition T3C and which crystallize with a structure similar to that of the T9BCx ternary carbide phases. Furthermore, these binary and ternary phases are found to coexist in equilibrium with each other. The similarity in structure and composition between, for example, Y3C and Y3AlC in the light of the mis-cibility gap which had been found to exist between these two phases indicated a need for a more thorough knowledge of the phase relations which occur in alloys based upon these compositions. Consequently, an investigation of the phase equilibria in the yttrium-rich portion of the Y-A1-C phase diagram was undertaken. The limiting Y-A1 binary diagram determined by Lundin and Klodt3 and the results of Spedding et al.4 governing the Y3C phase were used as guides in , constructing the diagram. EXPERIMENTAL Alloys weighing about 10 g were prepared by arc-melting powder compacts made from the various components on a water-cooled copper hearth using a tungsten electrode in a gettered argon atmosphere. Good homogeneity was obtained by melting the alloys three times. The purity of the yttrium used was 99.9 pct (0.07 pct rare earths). The purity of the aluminum and the carbon was 99.99 pct. The results of chemical analysis on five representative alloys showed that losses during the alloying process were predominantly carbon losses and that in no instance did the measured concentration of this component differ by more than 3 at. pct from the intended composition. For this reason the alloy compositions which are reported are those of the charges prepared for melting. Three alloys which were analyzed for copper, tungsten, nitrogen, and oxygen compositions showed that no contamination had occurred either during casting or during the subsequent annealing treatments. Machinery Systems Division (MSD) in the Institute of Mining Engineering at Wroclaw University of Technology specializes in belt conveying systems analyzing, calculating and design. Within the division operates the certified Laboratory of Belt Transportation (LTT) and Laboratory of Rollers. Since few years, a group of several people have begun work on developing a comprehensive system for the automatic evaluation of condition of conveyor belts working in the mines. Group uses both magnetic devices developed by specialized companies servicing belts and its own machine vision system developed for assessment of belts covers and edges during belt movement (up to 7 m / s) on the specially designed for this purpose the test conveyor. Recently they have got the research grant funded by the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBiR) for development of the system for automatic diagnosing of conveyor belts? condition and aiding of rational belt management. On the basis of previously created diagnostic tool called ABCDE (Automatic Belt Condition Diagnostic Equipment) the five modules: vision-A magnetic-B, preventive-C, forecasting?D, and determining safety factor-E will be developed. They will automatically interpret data about conveyor belts? condition to indicate the extent and timing of repairs, to prevent failures and to select the optimum moments for their replacements. The system will use results of ongoing research & development and planned research concerning modeling of belt wear using evolutionary genetic algorithms. The reached stage of research can not yet allow to start the implementation work by potential users. It is therefore necessary to pursuit research in real scale, the development of new modules (C-E) and intensive testing of the system in working condition with system calibration to optimize the economic effects.

"There is a need to develop cost effective renewable energy processes for the production of clean fuels that can simultaneously mitigate the U.S. energy/global environmental security issue. If H2 can be obtained cost effectively via the splitting of water using concentrated sunlight, then it’s possible to operate a fuel cell using renewable H2 or to synthesize other fuels based on renewable H2 for generating electricity or for running internal combustion engines. For example, H2 can be reacted with sequestered carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce syngas (H2/CO) via reverse water gas shift (RWGS), i.e. H2 + CO2 ? CO + H2O. The syngas can be catalytically methanated to form synthetic natural gas (SNG) or it can be catalytically reformed to produce liquid fuels such as “green” gasoline via the MTG process (syngas? methanol ? gasoline). The desert SW United States is home to world class sunlight. Fundamental ferrite thermodynamics will be reviewed, an example of the beneficial effect of ferrite surface area on reaction kinetics will shown, and process economics will be investigated for a 100,000 kg/day facility to produce H2.Introduction and Background ThermodynamicsSpinel ferrites of the form MxFe3-xO4, where M generally represents Ni, Zn, Co, Mn, or other transition metals, have been shown to be capable of splitting water according to the two step cycle shown below:MxFe3-xO4 + solar thermal energy ? xMO + (3-x)FeO + 0.5 O2 (1)xMO + (3-x)FeO + H2O ? MxFe3-xO4 + 2H2 (2)This is an inherently clean and sustainable process, as the only net inputs are solar energy and water, and the net outputs are hydrogen and oxygen. Ferrite water splitting cycles are advantages compared to other high temperature water splitting cycles, such as the ZnO/Zn and Mn2O3/MnO cycles, because thermal reduction has been demonstrated at significantly lower temperatures[1, 2]. As a result, overall efficiency may be increased due to the fact that radiation losses increase as the fourth power of temperature, and material considerations for reactor design should be more flexible. Additionally, cycle repeatability has been demonstrated with relative ease as compared to other thermochemical cycles [3-6]. However, the amount of hydrogen per mole that is generated is significantly less than for other high temperature thermochemical cycles due to the fact that only Fe3+ is capable of being reduced at the temperatures of interest[6]. In addition, water oxidation kinetics appear to be very slow, likely due to diffusion or surface area limitations created by near surface oxidation [6, 7]."

"A load test program was performed on two auger cast piles constructed in the Inner Coastal Plain geology of North Carolina. Both test piles were installed through Coastal Plain deposits and into underlying Piedmont residual soils; one test pile was embedded into partially weathered rock (PWR). The recommended 100-ton design load was confirmed by a test program that included instrumenting the piles with strain gages. The two piles performed differently during the load tests due to the effect of embedment into PWR. Loading Test Pile No. 1, which was not embedded into PWR, to failure at about 230% of the design compressive load allowed for evaluation of the mobilization of the ultimate shaft and end bearing resistances. Mobilization pile resistance was evaluated by comparing shaft and end bearing resistances to top of pile deflection (d) normalized by the pile diameter (D). For Test Pile No. 1, the ultimate average shaft resistance was achieved at d /D of about 7.5% and ultimate end bearing resistance at d /D of about 9.5%. Test Pile No. 2, embedded into PWR, achieved a d /D of only about 4% at 200% of the design load and was not loaded to failure. Shaft resistance was mobilized at a different rate within each individual geologic layer, i.e. ultimate shaft resistance did not occur simultaneously for all geologic layers. As the available total shaft resistance was exceeded and end bearing mobilized, the unit shaft resistances reduced from the peak values. A modified Davisson offset using d /D of about 6.5% appears applicable for evaluating the ultimate capacity of auger cast piles in the Inner Coastal Plain.INTRODUCTIONAuger-cast-in-place (ACIP) piling was developed in the 1940’s and patented in 1956 (Neely, 1991). Since patent expiration in 1973, ACIP piles are abundantly used in the United States, particularly in the southeast. However, most literature addresses driven piles constructed in sand and clay with lesser discussion of drilled piles. Conventional design methodologies (a- method, ß-method, SPT or CPT correlations, etc.) are based on data derived from numerous projects in a great variety of geologies. O’Neil (2001) notes that there are significant levels of uncertainty in the “universal” databases as evidenced by coefficients of variation of 0.35 to 0.40 for geotechnical parameters (su, SPT-Nvalue, etc.) used to estimate pile capacities.There is a need to develop local databases developed from data obtained from load tests that measure shaft resistance and end bearing. This paper presents the results of load tests conducted on axially loaded auger-cast-in-place piles constructed in the Inner Coastal Plain geology of North Carolina. Shaft resistance, end bearing, and movements that initiated mobilization of these resistances are described. The information presented herein can be used to refine geotechnical correlations and parameters applied in auger cast pile design methodologies."

The Air-Sparged Hydrocyclone (ASH) has been developed for the fast and efficient flotation of fine mineral particles in a centrifugal field during the past decade at the University of Utah. Over the years, the air-sparged hydrocyclone unit has shown promising potential for the flotation of copper porphyry ore, low-grade placer gold and auriferous pyrite ores, various industrial minerals, and fine coal cleaning. Many fundamental studies including the X-ray computed tomography (CT) analysis have been carried out in order to understand the multiphase fluid flow phenomena associated with ASH flotation. With data available from these studies, it is now possible to construct more accurate ASH flotation models for different applications in order to analyse the behaviour of the system and to optimise design and operating variables. The ASH flotation model developed in this paper is based on the data given in `Air-Sparged Hydrocyclone/Advanced Froth Flotation Fine Coal Cleaning', Final Report, DOE Contract No DE-AC-88PC88853, submitted by Pennsylvania Electric Company (PENELEC), December 1989. Data from several hundred experiments with the two-inch ASH-2C air-sparged hydrocyclone (capacity 0.1 - 0.3 tph dry coal) are available from the report and have been used for this analysis. In the past, a preliminary model based on limited data had been developed. The current study, however, emphasises the global behaviour of the ASH system by utilising almost all the data from the report for the purpose of scale-up and industrial application. There are two parts in the current modeling and analysis effort for ASH flotation of fine coal. The first part is the modeling/analysis of dimensionless ratio of overflow opening area to underflow opening area, A*, and the dimensionless ratio of air flowrate to slurry flowrate, Q . The second part involves the modelling/analysis of all other variables in the system and an expert system for operation and control is introduced.

IN the early days of mining in the Anthracite field, only the thicker and better seams of coal were mined, because of the limited mining and coal-cleaning facilities, therefore many of the thinner and less productive seams were permitted to remain unmined. With improvements in mining methods, the introduction of modem preparation plants, and the increased market demand for small-size coal, the thinner and more laminated seams have now become assets. In many instances these seams overlie the mined-out beds of the thicker and better seams, from which all recoverable coal was removed by the conventional breast-and-pillar method of mining. Some collieries in certain sections of the Anthracite field are now relying on these thinner and laminated seams. For the purpose of illustration, a large area in the Hickory Swamp-Ridge Basin of the western middle coal field has been selected, where as early as 1898 the No. 4, or Little Buck Mountain, seam was mined and pillars removed. The No. 5, or Buck Mountain, seam lying on a comparatively light pitch and with intervening strata of but 55 ft. of rock was not mined until 1935. Farther east, in the same basin the Nos. 8 and 9 seams, which are two splits of the Mammoth seam, have been mined and robbed and the workings have been abandoned since 1896. The overlying No. 9 ¾ seam, or the upper split of the Mammoth, and the No. 9 ¾ or 4-ft. seam remained virgin, with only an interval of 50 ft. of rock separating them, and with 40 to 50 ft. of rock strata separating the No. 9 ½ seam from the completely mined area of the Nos. 8 and 9 seams. These seams lie on a pitch of 45° on the south side of the basin and on 75° on the north side of the basin. Mining has been carried on in the 9 ½ and 9 ¾ seams for 3 years on both dips of the basin, for a distance of 3500 ft. In some sections the overlying strata of the thicker seams previously mined have settled without any apparent breaks in the upper strata, as indications have shown in the top split of the Mammoth; while in other areas the roof and bottom of this top split of the Mammoth have settled unevenly, thereby causing the bottom and roof to break into blocks. In attempting to mine over a large area of the No. 5 or Buck Mountain seam, a similar settlement has been encountered; the roof of the seam has been broken and a considerable amount of timbering has been necessary in order to make the mining of the seam possible. The conventional breast-and-pillar method, using shaker conveyors, has been used in the No. 5 seam, and a slant-breast method in the mining of Nos. 9 ½ and 9 ¾ seams. Surface wave formation induced by a high-strength submerged jet in a bottom blown metallurgical vessels has been studied experimentally by using one-seventh water model of CLU (Creusot-Loire Uddeholm) reactor with two different tuyere configurations. Experimental results have been discussed in terms of the wave period, wave frequency and wave amplitude with respect to air injection rate and tuyere configuration at a 0.23 m bath height. The results from high speed photography observations displayed the formation of rotating surface waves which circulates within the water model. It was found that the frequency and the amplitude increased with gas injection rate. The wave period for off-centre nozzle orientation was found to be lower than those of the centre configuration. The experimental results also showed that the frequency of a rotating wave increases when the tuyere orientation becomes off-centred . The predicted amplitudes were in very good agreement with the experimental values over a range of gas flowrates between 0.00599m 3/s to 0.01081 m 3/s.

Bituminous mines comprised 92.4% (n=1,875) and anthracite mines 7.6% (n=155) of coal mining operations. ? Approximately 72% of all coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (28.4%), West Virginia (22.6%), and Pennsylvania (20.5%).

The performance of flotation machines is closely related to the gas dispersion characteristics achieved in their operation. It is known that frothers play a major role not only in the size distribution of the generated bubble population, but also on the swarm rise velocity. A program to characterize frother effects on two-phase hydrodynamics (air-water) of Jameson cells was undertaken in a fully instrumented pilot unit installed at McGill University. Gas dispersion parameters (gas velocity, gas holdup and bubble size distributions) of the gas-liquid mixture generated in the downcomer were measured after its release into the separation chamber. The unit was operated under different conditions including gas velocity, liquid jet velocity and frother concentration (MIBC). Bubble size distributions for concentrations above the critical coalescence concentration (CCC) were narrow with Sauter mean diameter between 0.6 to 1.3 mm. The bubble size followed the general trend as encountered in other types of flotation machines, i.e., rapid decrease with increasing frother concentrations below 10 µL/L, and almost no change in size for concentrations above 30 µL/L. The CCC was between 10 and 15 µL/L. Strong correlations were found between bubble size and air-to-liquid flow ratio (APR), and between the bulk density of the aerated solution in the separation tank and the vacuum inside the downcomer. An equation is proposed to estimate gas holdup in the separation tank from vacuum and bulk density readings.

The inputs of capital and labor to support future iron ore production were developed by the Bureau of Mines from projections of iron demand and estimates of capital and labor requirements. Trends in technologic change and the organization of production were analyzed. Labor requirement schedules for iron ore mining and beneficiating were constructed from aggregate inter-temporal trends and 1970 cross-sectional analysis of mines and mills. A sup-ply schedule of the capital requirement for mine-mill-pellet plants was developed from U.S. and Canadian experience. The structure of demand for iron to the year 2000 was examined as well as the availability of resources. Projections of capital and labor requirements to 2000 were constructed under two international patterns of iron ore supply to the United States. The most likely model is for a continuation of the 70 percent United States-30 percent foreign shares, expanding at an average 2.0 percent growth rate to 2000, and supported by a cumulative gross capital investment of $3.8 billion constant 1967 dollars and a labor force in the United States of 29,800 by 2000. The information content of projections is discussed, and the possible effects of international forces on supply are considered. A generalized methodology for estimating capital and labor requirements in other mineral industries also is included.

In this study, the effect of colemanite and calcined colemanite (CC) addition on the properties of iron ore pellets is studied. The pellets are prepared in a lab without and with 0.2% colemanite and varying amounts of CC from 0 to 1.0 wt%in steps of 0.2%. A reference pellet is prepared under typical plant conditions, and the properties of the reference pellet are considered as the base value for improving the cold compressive strength (CCS) while maintaining the other parameters at an acceptable limit without altering the pellet. The study also aims to provide a detailed characterization of colemanite and calcined colemanite to better understand their behaviour during firing. The lab-scale results show that the CCS of pellets made with 0.2% colemanite was reduced by 222 points (60%) as compared to the reference pellets due to crack formation during firing. The results show an improvement in the CCS of the indurated pellets with CC dosage up to 0.4%, and decreasing strength is noted thereafter. It is observed that the swelling index increases with the increase in calcined colemanite dosage. To simulate plant conditions, reference pellets and pellets with optimized CC dosage were fired in a plant furnace.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE METHOD The original application of sublevel caving was in ground so weak that it would collapse even in small headings when the support was removed. Heavily tim¬bered drifts were driven across the ore body; the timber was removed at the end of the drift, and the ore caved and slushed out. When dilution became excessive the next set was removed and so on. This method gave high dilution and poor recovery and was slow, but it was the only way to mine this type of ore body at that time. In more recent times the method has been adapted to stronger ground which needs to be drilled and blasted, so it is not a caving method as far as the ore is con¬cerned. However, the method does rely on the walls to cave and so the name sublevel caving has been retained. The method as presently generally applied is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Sublevels are established at approximately 7.6 to 12.2-m (25 to 40-ft) vertical intervals. They are usually accessed from a ramp system. A haulage drift is driven down the strike of the ore body, but in the waste. Production drifts are turned off the haulage drift and driven across the ore body on about 10.7-m (35-ft) horizontal centers. This divides the ore body into a geometrical pattern. Slot raises are driven at the end of the drifts near the ore-waste contact and the slot is expanded to the shape of the fan drilling. Up holes are drilled to break towards the slot at burdens of 1.2 to 1.8 m (4 to 6 ft). They are drilled past the next sublevel to the production drift im¬mediately above. When a sufficient number of fans has been drilled, production can start by blasting one or two fans at a time towards the slot. Load-haul-dump (LHD) units are used to muck the ore, which rills out into the drift. At first, when only a small area is mined, the walls may not cave, and the operation will be similar to open stoping. Later, sloughing from the walls will fill any voids created, and the ore after blasting will be con¬tained by the caved waste and gravitate downwards as mucking proceeds. The valuable mineral content of the current feed to the Miami concentrator is as follows: copper, 0.7 pct total; molybdenum, 0.01. Flotation of this ore yields a sulphide concentrate containing: chalcocite, 44 pct; molybdenite, 0.5; pyrite, 50.0; insol, 5.5. A combination of potassium ethyl xanthate and pentasol amyl xanthate as collectors, and pine oil as frother, are used in this flotation. Rejection of pyrite is encouraged by holding the amount of collectors used to the minimum consistent with copper recovery and by operating at high alkalinity (equivalent to 0.35-0.40 lb CaO per ton solution of pH 11.0).

With steadily increasing prices for imported oil, commercial production of oil from oil shale can become a reality in the near future. Presently we are importing about 43% of our oil needs and this reliance on foreign oil can be reduced by utilizing the vast resources of oil shale in the western US. The oil shale resources in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming, averaging 0.06 m3/ton (15 gal per st) and occurring in beds at least 3 m (10 ft) thick, are estimated at 293 Gm3 (1842 billion bbl) of which only 97 Gdm3 (610 billion bbl) are recoverable with current technology. The full potential of this vast resource can be realized only if significant steps are taken toward improving mining and retorting technology and solving environmental problems. Oil shales with a grade of 0.08-0.10 m3/ton (20-25 gal per st) are amenable to mining and surface retorting; whereas lower-grade oil shales may be recovered by in situ retorting.

The wire saw, introduced by the Bureau of Mines about two years ago, has revolutionized slate quarrying in Pennsylvania. The success of the saw since its early accomplishments has become greater and greater as the equipment has been perfected and skill acquired .in its use. In the first test made, a cutting rate of 9.7 square feet per hour was attained; in the next four cuts, made early in 1927, the average rate of cutting was increased to 12.8 square feet per hour; in 1928 a maximum of 34 square feet per hour had been attained, with a general average of about 20 to 25 square feet, The wire saw is now regarded as essential equipment in practically all of the quarries in the Bangor, Pen Argyl, and Windgap districts. The wire saw consists of a three-strand steel cable of 3/16 or 1/4 inch diameter running as an endless belt. The driving pulley is a 40-inch double-groove cast-iron sheave. A tension pulley supported by a frame mounted on wheels may travel back and forth on a short track. A weight of 800 to 2,000 pounds gives the desired tension on the wire. The driving units consist of electric motors with direct-drive compactly enclosed gear reduction, or double-belt speed-reduction units; the former is preferred. Silent chain and. pinion gear reductions are used to a limited extent. The travelling speed of the wire is about 15 feet per second. The driving and tension equipment are shown in Figure 1, A.

Although there was a significant improvement in the world economy, recovery in the iron and steel industry followed its traditional pattern and lagged the general economic recovery in 1983. World crude steel production increased from 645 Mt (711 million st) in 1982 to 664 Mt (732 million st) in 1983, an increase of less than 3%. Domestic iron and steel production showed a modest increase over 1982. Weekly raw steel pro¬duction levels ranged between 1.5 and 1.75 Mt (1.6 and 1.9 million st) for the last 10 months of 1983, compared with less than 1.25 Mt (1.4 million st) for the last half of 1982. The peak was 2.5 Mt (2.7 million per st) per week in 1978-79. This how level of steel operations kept most pelletizing and sintering operations at curtailed production levels. Extended shut-downs of pellet plants were also common. Pressure by management to reduce operating costs has continued with an increasing emphasis on maintaining quality and efficient unit productivity. With the extended decline, there have been significant personnel reductions in both operating and headquarters staffs. Many companies are anticipating a long-term how growth period in the iron and steel sector. Pelletizing Domestic pellet production showed a slight increase last year to about 34 Mt (38 million st), less than 50% of total capacity. What is indicative of the inevitable is the announced intention to chose down facilities, such as US Steel Corp.'s Atlantic City ore operations pellet plant at Lander, WY, and the recent aborted move by US Steel to purchase National Steel with the apparent intent to chose the National pellet plant in Keewatin, MN. There is excess domestic pellet capacity that will not be needed. The question is what form attrition will take. South American pellets can be brought into the Chicago area at a cost competitive with Great Lakes plants. This raises the possibility that imported pellets can, in fact, displace domestic pellets at almost any US steel plant. The need to re duce total production costs at domestic pelletizing plants is crucial. Efforts to reduce fuel costs for pelletizing have focused on re placing natural gas or fuel oil with coal. More recently, petroleum coke has become available at an attractive cost, but systems must cope with its higher sulfur con tent, which limits its potential The direct firing of grate-kiln systems with pulverized coal hay been fully proven. The use of solic fuel in the straight-grate process however, is still being developer and no straight-grate system i running on solid fuel alone. The further development o coal-water slurry systems may provide a suitable fuel for both systems. It would appear, how ever, that the same ash quality restriction would hold for coal water systems as for direct-firin systems. So, the choice is based of the relative cost and convenience of a wet-grinding system with additives, compared with a dry-grind direct-fired unit. The high-temperature (two stage) heat recuperation system installed at US Steel's Minnta plant (Step III) has provided the fuel savings anticipated, any modification of additional in durating lines is planned. Other operators are hooking at similar heat recuperation improvement. Another area of potential cost savings has been in the reduction of bentonite requirements. A CCI's Tihden plant, major improvements have been made in this area. Progressive bentonit reductions were achieved over several years from the 8- to 9-kg (16- to 18-lb per st) range to the 5-k (12-1b) level by progressive moisture reductions and chose attention to operating practice.
