"Na2NbAlO5 was synthesized using Nb2O5 and NaAlO2 as raw materials in molten NaCl-CaCl2 by a solid reaction. With an addition of sodium into the melts, Na2NbAlO5 was subsequently reduced to form NbAl3 intermetallic compound with a particle size of 50-300nm.IntroductionThe intermetallic compounds of niobium aluminides have been a subject of research interests as high temperature materials because of their properties such as high melting temperature, large specific strength at elevated temperature, good resistance to high temperature oxidation, low density and large ductility [1,2]. They are applicable for turbine blades in aircraft engines and stationary gas turbines [3,4].In recent years, the methods of powder synthesis have been widely discussed. There are many methods to synthesis intermetallic compounds such as conventional melting and solidification [5], powder metallurgy [6,7], reaction sintering [8] and reaction sintering with prior mechanical activation [9,10]. There is a prominent weakness in such methods that they use metal to produce intermetallic compounds by the means of diffusion reaction. Although the metal can diffusion sufficiently, it is still hard to avoid maldistribution of the constituents which impairs the properties of the materials."

"Therma1 and chemical treatment of respirable size silica dusts samples is shown to induce marked changes in their hemolytic activity. The cytotoxicity of crystalline a-quartz (Min-U-Sil), and fumed silica (Cab-0- Sil) particles, as measured by a hemolytic activity protocol, is decreased by calcination and can be related to the dehydroxylation of the surface. The hemolytic activity of P-cristobalite particles of respirable dust si7.e was also determined and found to be lower than that of a-quartz. The change in the surface structure resulting from thermal treatment is detectable by photo-acoustic infrared spectroscopy and zeta-potential measurements. The absorption band in the 3200-4000 cm-1 frequency region of both Cab-0-Sil and MinU- Sil disappears upon heat treatment while a sharp band, identified with single silanol groups, at 3750 cm-1 increases in intensity. The zeta potential-pH profile, in the pH range of 4.0-7 .0, of the calcined, siloxane surfaced particles is more negative than that of material with a silanol surface.The cytotoxicity of the crystalline and fumed silica dusts was also found to be strongly dependent on particle size. Fumed silica of large surface area (small particle size) exhibits an initial increase in hemolytic activity upon calcination. This result confirms other experimental observations pointing to a particle size of maximum toxicity. INTRODOCTIONThe toxicity of silica and other mineral particles, as manifested by their role in inducing pneumoconiosis, fibrosis, silicosis and other pulmonary disorders is largely traceable to the characteristics of particle surfaces and to particle morphology. The great wealth of data on the physical and chemical properties of silica is still insufficient for a comprehensive understanding of the specific parameters to be associated with fibrogenic activity and, correspondingly, with the optimum means for characterizing and quantifying the toxicity of dusts, and the design of possible preventive or therapeutic methods.The great diversity of parameters that have been proposed and tested for correlation with cytotoxicity suggest that more than one mechanism may be involved in the fibrotic activity of silica particles. The crystalline structure of the material (more active tridymite versus less active crisobalite and passive stishovite), freshly formed surfaces and free radicals associated therewith, silicic acid adsorbed onto silica surfaces, the concentration of hydroxyl groups at silica surfaces, particle size and morphology, among other properties, have been investigated and found to conelate in tests of cytotoxicity."

T. ROSENQVIST*—It is a pleasure to see the excellent way in which the experimental part of this work has been handled. There seems to be little doubt that the distribution data obtained corresponds most closely to thermodynamic equilibrium under the prevailing reducing conditions, namely equilibrium with graphite and one atmosphere CO pressure. The desulphurization curves in Fig 10 show the same general feature as the curves given by Holbrook and Joseph, but the distribution ratios are from 20 to 40 times greater—undoubtedly due to a closer approach to true equilibrium. In the theoretical discussion, the authors calculate a theoretical distribution (S) ration -jg-. which they find to be about 50 times greater than the experimental. The deviation is so great that the basis for their calculation needs a more thorough examination. The authors base their thermodynamic calculation on free energy expressions where diluted solutions of FeS and CaS are used as standard states. (The activity coefficient in diluted solutions is taken to equal unity.) Such a standard state will change when the nature of the solvent is changed. Taking the free energy of the reaction [FeS] ? (FeS), Eq 2, which is derived from the distribution of sulphur between an iron and a FeO-melt, it is very unlikely that the free energy of this reaction will be the same for a distribution between pig iron and a calcium silicate slag. Therefore a more fundamental basis for the thermodyuamic calculations seems needed, where all thermodynamic equations are referred to unambiguously defined standard states. The most natural standard states for CaO and CaS are the pure solid substances at the same temperature. As standard state for sulphur in iron, pure liquid FeS can be used. This rules out Eq 2 [FeS] ;=s (FeS) because ?F° = 0. The standard equation will then be: FeS, + CaO6 + Cgraph ?Fei + CaS8 + CO. vFo1773 = 25,000 cal It would be more universal and also simpler to refer the escaping tendency of sulphur in liquid iron to the corresponding H2S/H2 ratio which can readily be determined experimentally. As standard state a gas mixture H2S/H2 = 1/1 can be used. (This corresponds at the temperature of liquid iron closely to one atmosphere S2 vapor.) Thus the standard equation for the sulphur reaction can be formulated as follows: H2S0 + CaO3 + Cgraph ?H2o + CaS8 + COg The standard free energy of this reaction has been calculated from the best available data to AF°m3 = —35,000 cal. This gives for the equilibrium constant at 1500°C Now, the solubility of CaS in blast furnace slags has been determined by McCafferey and Oesterle* and corresponds at 1500°C to about 10 pet S (varying somewhat with the composition of the slag.) If the activity of CaS is assumed linear between 0-10 pet as curve 1, (see Fig 11), then acaO = 0.1 (S); (S) being wt. pet sulphur in the slag. For a diluted solution of sulphur in an iron melt saturated with carbon, the ratio H2S/H2 is, according to Kitchener, Bockris and Liberman,f about 0.01 [S], [S] being wt. pet sulphur in iron. Substituting these values in the expression for Kp we find The value 2.103 is only 4 times greater than the experimental coefficient found by Hatch and Chipman, but the value is very sensitive to a small error in AF°. A better agreement with the experimental distribution coefficient can be obtained if one assumes the activity of CaS to run like curve 2 (Fig 11). This (S) will give a lower theoretical W, value, a value which varies with (S) exactly as Hatch and Chipman learned. Such a shape of the activity curve, which corresponds to a positive deviation from Raoult's law, is actually to be expected from the fact that liquid silicate and sulphide phases usually show incomplete miscibility. A closer agreement between experimental and theoretical data can not be expected before we have more complete data for the individual activities of CaS and CaO in the slag. The activities acaS and Ocao referred to the solid phases as standard states, are exact defined quantities contrary to the somewhat undefined expression "free lime," and they are independent of any theory for the constitution of liquid slag. J. CHIPMAN (authors' reply)—The authors wish to thank Mr. Rosenqvist for his very interesting and useful thermodynamic addition. Curve 2 of his figure offers the needed basis for explaining the increase in the ratio (S)/[S] with increasing sulphur content. Attention is called to an error in the printed paper: Fig 2 and 3 are reversed. M. TENENBAUM*—In the figures showing the relationship between excess base and sulphur distribution (Fig 6, 7 and 9) the slope of the curve tapers off in the negative basicity range. Somewhat the same thing is observed with open hearth slags. In that case, the fact that some sulphur distribution between slag and metal is obtained with negative basicity is interpreted as indicating some dissociation of the lime silicate compounds whose existence in oxidizing basic slags has been used to explain various observed phenomena with regard to other slag-metal reactions. In the case of the blast furnace slags, the reduced slope of the sulphur distribution curve with decreasing excess base is attributed to the amphoteric effect of alumina. Has the possibility of other explanations been investigated ?

IT Is commonly recognized that a given material may be described as ductile or brittle only with reference to the conditions of test. Thus under the usual test conditions quartz is brittle, but under high pressures it is ductile. Salts that are brittle at room temperature become ductile at elevated temperatures. Pitch, brittle with respect o rapid loads, flows at low rates of loading. Pearlitic steel, ductile under the usual conditions of test, may be embrittled under the proper conditions of combined stresses, temperature, and rate of loading. EARLIER INVESTIGATIONS A clear analysis of the conditions necessary for plastic flow and for fracture was first given by Ludwik,1 who introduced two types of stress, the "flow stress" and the "stress at fracture." These stresses may refer to tensile or to shear stresses, or, in fact, to any type of stress. Ludwik considered these two stresses to be independent of one another, functions of the conditions of test and of the prior history of the material. For the purpose of analysis, both a flow stress and a stress at fracture can be envisaged as functions of strain over the entire range from zero to infinite strain. Thus, the material is brittle if the stress at fracture is less than the flow stress and ductile if the reverse is true. According to Ludwik's analysis, the problem of determining the effects of combined stresses, of temperature and of strain rate upon the behavior of metals reduces to a problem of determining the effect of these variables upon the flow stress and upon the stress at fracture. In the present paper, methods are described for determining the effects of two of these variables, temperature and strain rate, and examples are given of the dependence or now stress and stress at fracture, upon these two variables. The effect of combined stresses will be discussed in a succeeding paper. The flow stress may be determined from a load-diameter curve. Load-diameter curves were obtained over a wide range of temperature and over the limited range of strain rates obtainable with the lever-type Riehle machine used. The. curves were then converted to an extremely wide range of strain rate by making use of the equivalence of the effects of changes in strain rate and changes in temperature, previously proposed2 and demonstrated' by the authors. According to this principle of equivalence, strain rate E and temperature T affect the flow stress only through a single parameter p of the form: p = EeQ/RT [I] In this equation, R is the gas constant (2 cal. per gram mol per deg. C.), and Q is a heat of activation, which varies from material to material, and may depend upon the strain, but not upon the strain rate or the temperature. There is associated with every value of p a flow-stress curve. Combinations of strain rate and of temperature that give the same p have the same flow-stress curve. Therefore, merely by changing the temperature of test, the effect of changing the strain rate may be obtained. Thus, under isothermal conditions, the material will behave the same at

THERE has been little investigation of the gold-germanium binary alloys. Haughton1 does not mention any work on the system. In a review article commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of germanium, E. Einecke2 mentioned a gold germanium eutectic at 24 atomic per cent Ge (10.4 weight per cent) melting at 359°C., but did not give the source of his information. From measurements of electrical conductivity, J. 0. Linde3 estimated that at least o.6 weight per cent germanium is soluble in gold. The recent availability of germanium in this country in commercial quantities has led to interest in its properties and its alloys. This study is part of a program of investigation on germanium alloys; work on ternary alloys involving germanium and gold will be reported later. In this investigation, the composition and melting point of the Au-Ge eutectic reported by Einecke has been found to be substantially correct. Eutectic composition has been placed at 12,0 per cent germanium, however. An alloy of 10.4 per cent Ge, Einecke's value, was found to have a few gold dendrites in it. The eutectic temperature has been determined as 356.0 ± 0.5°C., slightly less than the temperature of 359°C reported by Einecke. The liquidus curves and the solid solubility of germanium in gold have been determined, and are shown in Fig. I. MATERIALS AND ALLOYING The germanium used in this investigation was prepared by the Eagle-Picher Lead Co. from pure germanium oxide, by reduction in clay crucibles with sodium cyanide. The regulus is quite pure, assaying over 99.9 per cent Ge. High-purity gold obtained from Handy and Harmon was used. Alloying was carried out in graphite crucibles in an atmosphere of purified hydrogen. The temperature was brought up to 1050° to 1100°C., and the metal was allowed to freeze in the crucible. Prepared in this way, the gold dendrites in hypoeutectic alloys were somewhat segregated at the bottom and sides of the ingot, and on the hypereutectic side the lighter primary germanium tended to gather at the top. Most of the alloys were made from virgin metal. Low-germanium heats were made by alloying pure gold with the eutectic. Melting losses were consistently a few milligrams or less, and the composition could safely be taken from the intended analysis. The 30 per cent and 50 per cent germanium heats for thermal analysis were made in part from remelted higher germanium heats, and they may be off composition as much as one per cent. Because of the high cost of materials, the weight of heats for thermal analysis were 15 to 20 grams and heats for metallographic, X-ray, and hardness specimens were 2 to 4 grams.

The use of black and white and colour infrared film in remote sensing of natural resources, is reviewed. In heavily-forested areas such as New Zealand, the main value of the method is in surveying the vegetation cover to detect the existence of plant communities characteristic of specific geological formations, By contrast, in and areas of Australia where the vegetation cover is sparse and where rocks and soils are well exposed, the method can be used in detecting different rock types or other geological differences.

AN investigation of the behavior of inclusions in steel several years ago1 led to the conclusion that some of the commonly occurring inclusions in steel have appreciable solubilities, particularly in liquid steel. In the belief that further study and clarification of this matter was warranted, a laboratory study of oxides in liquid steel was started. These oxides are generally the result of deoxidation treatment, and the basis of an understanding of their behavior must be, therefore, the behavior of the deoxidizer in liquid iron. The Fe-Si-O system was selected for the first study, and the apparatus used and experiments conducted are described herein. APPARATUS The apparatus is shown in Fig. I and the system is shown by diagram in Fig. 2. Furnace Atmosphere Commercial hydrogen (1) passes through an orifice (2) into a manometric system that measures the tankside pressure (3) and the back pressure (4) in the system. A water trap (5) guards against excess tankside pressure. A by-pass with stopcocks (6 and 7) is provided, so that the hydrogen can be routed directly from the tank to the furnace if desired. When stopcock 7 is closed and stopcock 6 is open, the gas proceeds through the conditioning train, of which the first unit is a furnace (8) that contains platinized asbestos at 350°C. The temperature is measured by a thermocouple and potentiometer (9) and is controlled by a slidewire resistance (10). In [ ] this furnace free oxygen is converted to water vapor. The exiting gas passes over a water bath (11) kept slightly below boiling temperature by an auxiliary heating unit (12). This unit also heats a surrounding copper coil (13) containing water, and the heated water rises through a collar (14)

A combination of a slurry trench with dewatering successfully controlled groundwater for a large sloped excavation immediately adjacent to the Arkansas River. The Murray Hydro Electric Project required excavation through sand and gravel to bedrock, 85 feet below high water in the River. The perimeter system of deep wells pumping up to 25,000 GPM (1,600 1/sec) lowered the water level to 15 feet (4.6 m) above bedrock. A short soil/bentonite slurry trench near the toe of the slope cut off the residual head. The method cut six weeks from the critical path. Design of the slopes and the dewatering system demanded high safety factors because of risk to existing Lock and Dam No. 7. A localized pocket of soft organic clay was supported by a rock filled bolster. A major flood event was successfully withstood. The method can be applied to large civil excavations and open pit mines.

We would like to thank Mr. Mandolesi for his informative paper on rails from strand cast steel. The chemical and structural properties of the strand cast steel were of particular interest to us. We would like to supplement his excellent report with some of Inland's findings from our Caster with submerged nozzles and strands reduced in line from 7" x 7" to 5-5/8" square cross section. Inland has conducted extensive segregation studies on AISI 1049 steel - Fine Grain 0.50% carbon and 0.75% manganese. Based on approximately 80 heats, our normal segregation pattern results in analyses of .49% carbon in the center, and 0.50% carbon at the midway and edge position. The sulfur analysis averages .025% in the center, .027% midway, and .026% at the edge. Note the slight negative segregation between the center and midway position. This steel, being lower carbon and probably cast nearer the liquidus, resulted in less segregation than the 0.80% carbon rail steel.

The production of both over- and undersized coal fragments is a constant problem to open pit operators in the Powder River Basin. Operators strive to achieve production blasts that economically minimize the weight percentage of over- and undersize coal. However, natural fractures influence blast fragmentation, and can impose limits on the final fragment size distribution. ARCO&apos;s Anaconda Minerals Company studied the limits placed by natural fracturing as part of a wider geotechnical study of the Wyodak Coal in the eastern Powder River Basin, Campbell County, Wyoming. Measurements of fracture orientation, size and spacing were made at ARCO&apos;s Black Thunder Mine. These data were used to form statistical distributions for natural fracture size, spacing and orientation. An algorithm was created to select fracture properties at random from these distributions and to form hypothetical blocks. The blocks were then numerically "sieved" to derive pos- sible particle size distribution curves. These curves are compared to fragmentation results from samples taken from three test blasts. All test blasts yield very similar lognormal fragment size distributions. The median particle size varies from 1.25 to 2.0 in.(3.2 to 5.1 cm), the mean from 4.0 to 8.5 in. (10.2 to 21.6 cm). The standard deviation was about 1.6 in. (4.2 cm). Coal fines (fragments < 0.25 in. or 0.64 cm) are about 15%. Calculated fragment distributions for the natural fractures predict the median size well but underestimate the variance. Algorithm modifications to account for processes known to occur in the comminution zone near the blast hole significantly improve the match in the fine coal size range. The match suggests that spacing of fractures, rather than fracture length, controls the formation of fine- and medium-sized fragments. On the other hand, the oversize coal is controlled by the fracture lengths, rather than the spacing. Data from subsequent test blasts support this idea. By increasing delay times from 8 msec to 17 msec, engineers were able to reduce fines to 7% - 10% but could achieve no further improvement, despite changes in shot pattern geometry, decking and hole size. The hypothetical fragment distributions show that, even without blast enhancement, about 5% of the natural coal blocks are fine-sized.

Heat content values of tantalum monocarbide and tungsten monocarbide have been determined from 325" to 985°K by means of a drop-type diphenyl ether calorinzeter. Based on the values obtained in the present study and those available in the literature, best values lected and computed from 298. 15°K to temperatures close to their respectiue melting points. At temperatures higher than 1700°Kfor TaC and 27000 K for WC, values of Cp and related thermodynamic quantities were extrapolated based on the two Debye parameters: one corresponds to the metal sublattice and the other to the carbon sublattice. The contrzbutzon In the total specific heat due to lattice dilation was evaluated using the Nernst-Lindemann relalionship. The calculated values of Cp were in good agreement with the In view of their refractoriness, tantalum monocar-bide (TaC) and tungsten monocarbide (WC) are of con- experimentally determined ualues. Furthermore, the calculated values of the absolute entropies at 298.15"K were 5.03 and 4.15 in comparison to the experimental values of 5.05 and 4.15, all expressed in the unit of cal per degg-atom. Using the same Debye parameters, values of the linear coefficients of ther mal expansion for TaC and WC were calculated from absolute zero to their respective melting points using the Grüneisen equation. The calculated values are in excellent agreement with the experimental values available in the literature. Finally, the values of the bulk modulus of TaC from room tenzperature to temperature near its melting Point were also calculated using the equation recently derived by Anderson. With processing a variety of orebodies at Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) has come a changing mineralogy and more complex requirements for treatment in the concentrator. From mid-2013 and into 2014 the grind size required to achieve sufficient mineral liberation for production of a quality concentrate has reduced significantly. What was once a final P80 of 35–45 microns was forced to 20 microns. This has necessitated some creative changes to the flow sheet that previously had a 937?kW Vertimill regrinding a rougher concentrate to 40 microns. EHM is able to utilise an existing M10 000 3 MW IsaMill previously used for magnetite processing, to provide a quick convenient solution without large scale capital expenditures. Operating the Vertimill and IsaMill in parallel in closed circuit was successful at reducing the P80 of the regrind circuit to below 20 microns which increased the final concentrate grade by four per cent. This circuit and intermediate circuits used are discussed. The fundamental differential equation for fluid flow has been rearranged, integrated numerically for natural gases, and the results presented in tabular and graphical form suitable for the direct calculation of vertical gas flow problems. The integration is rigorous except for the use of a constant average temperature. Both static and flowing bottom-hole pressures may be calculated by (his method without resort to trial and error procedures. INTRODUCTION Bottom-hole pressures can be determined either by direct measurement with a bottom-hole pressure gauge or by calculation. Since measurement with a bottom-hole pressure gauge is costly, calculation of bottom-hole pressures is to be preferred when possible. Calculation involves knowledge of the wellhead pressure, the properties of the gas, the depth of the well, the flow rate, the temperature of the gas, and the size of the flow line. These quantities must be combined in a suitable equation for vertical flow. Several equations have been developed for the purpose of calculating gas flow through both horizontal and vertical pipes1,2,4,5,6,7,8,9 These equations all have the basic differential equation for flow as their starting point. They differ only in the assumptions which are made in order to simplify the integration step. The bottom-hole pressures calculated using any of the better known equations are in good agreement with bottom-hole pressures calculated by a more rigorous but considerably more tedious stepwise integration method. All of these methods, however. require a trial and error solution for the calculation of flowing bottom-hole pressures. The purpose of this paper is to present a method which provides a direct solution of static and flowing bottom-hole pressures without use of a trial and error solution. At the same time the method involves fewer simplifying assumptions than any of the previous methods used, except lor the lengthy stepwise method. The derivation of any practical flow equation begins with the basic differential equation which is rigorous for almost all flow problems. The five terms in Equation 1 represent the potential energy, the potential energy of position, the kinetic energy, the shaft work done, and the energy losses due to motion of the fluid respectively. Equation 1 reduces to Bernoulli&apos;s theorem for the case of horizontal flow of an incompressible fluid, no work done, and no energy losses due to friction. In the present case, the term (v) (dv)/(g,.) can be shown to be quite negligible compared to the other terms, and is therefore neglected in the derivation. The Hauraki Volcanic Region of the North Island developed between 18 and 1.9 Ma. Initial andesitic volcanism from 18 to 12 Ma was followed by 12 to 1.9 Ma volcanic activity that included rhyolitic, dacitic, andesitic, and basaltic compositions, with a gradual migration of activity to the SSE. Early andesitic volcanism evolved over the course of 8 m.y. to more silicic compositions; this trend was reset and repeated by post-10 Ma andesitic volcanism. Early and later andesites are otherwise remarkably similar in trace element composition. Rhyolites have the most diverse compositions, suggesting a major role for crustal input in their formation.

AN investigation of the behavior of inclusions in steel several years ago1 led to the conclusion that some of the commonly occurring inclusions in steel have appreciable solubilities, particularly in liquid steel. In the belief that further study and clarification of this matter was warranted, a laboratory study of oxides in liquid steel was started. These oxides are generally the result of deoxidation treatment, and the basis of an understanding of their behavior must be, therefore, the behavior of the deoxidizer in liquid iron. The Fe-Si-O system was selected for the first study, and the apparatus used and experiments conducted are described herein. APPARATUS The apparatus is shown in Fig. I and the system is shown by diagram in Fig. 2. Furnace Atmosphere Commercial hydrogen (1) passes through an orifice (2) into a manometric system that measures the tankside pressure (3) and the back pressure (4) in the system. A water trap (5) guards against excess tankside pressure. A by-pass with stopcocks (6 and 7) is provided, so that the hydrogen can be routed directly from the tank to the furnace if desired. When stopcock 7 is closed and stopcock 6 is open, the gas proceeds through the conditioning train, of which the first unit is a furnace (8) that contains platinized asbestos at 350°C. The temperature is measured by a thermo-couple and potentiometer (9) and is controlled by a slidewire resistance (10). In [ ] this furnace free oxygen is converted to water vapor. The exiting gas passes over a water bath (11) kept slightly below boiling temperature by an auxiliary heating unit (12). This unit also heats a surrounding copper coil (13) containing water, and the heated water rises through a collar (14)

This report examines the feasibility of Employee Assistance Plans for the coal industry. Three issues are examined in detail. First, the prevalence of off-the-job factors such as alcoholism, drug abuse, and marital problems are examined in a sample of miners from the eastern, midwestern, and western underground coal fields. Then data were presented that examined the link between these off-the-job factors and behaviors critical to the mines such as absenteeism and turnover. Lastly, we examined the effectiveness of the major Employee Assistance Program in underground coal mining--the HELP Program. The report contains recommendations on whether coal mining companies should implement these programs and how these programs should be designed.

Solubility studies were carried out to establish the phase distributions for various Fe-Ni-Pb-C alloys at temperatures where the metallic components exist as liquid solutions. Temperature us composition diagrams for the Ni-Pb, Fe-Pb, Fe-Ni-Pb, and Ni-Pb-C systems are derived by employing various approximations in conjunction with the data. Results are summarized for 1550°C in a quaternary phase diagram of the Fe-Ni-Pb-C system. BECAUSE surprisingly little information has been published on the phase diagrams of the Ni-Pb, Fe-Pb, Fe-Pb-Ni, and Fe-Ni-Pb-C systems, a study of these systems was undertaken to ascertain the important phase relationships in the temperature range of 1300" to 1550°C. Measurements were also made on the carbon-saturated systems in the hope that they would assist in the interpretation of the systems without carbon. This paper reports the results obtained from the simple equilibration of the various liquid and solid phases. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental technique involved holding appropriati quantities of the metals in an alumina crucible, or in a graphite crucible when saturation of the melt with carbon was desired, for sufficient time at the desired temperature to ensure equilibrium. Then a sample of each liquid phase presen was drawn into a small-bore silica tube. This sample was withdrawn quickly from the furnace, cooled, and sent to the chemical laboratory for analysis. The cell assembly used is shown in Fig. 1. Durin the work on the Fe-Pb-Ni system, it was placed in a furnace wound with 20 pct Rh-80 pct Pt wire. This furnace eventually failed and subsequent studies were carried out between 1350" and 1475°C in a tube furnace heated by silicon-carbide resistance elements. A protective atmosphere of argon with approximately 10 pct hydrogen was supplied to the cell assembly at a gage pressure of 1 in. of water. Hydrogen was passed over palladized alumina and then anhydrous calcium chloride for purification. Argon was purified of oxygen and water vapor by passing it over copper gauze at 550°C and then through a calcium chloride drying column. The gases were mixed and redried before they entered the equilibration cell. Temperature was measured by calibrated Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouples and a Rubicon Type B potentiometer.
