THERE has been considerable discussion among A metallurgists and others interested in the development of titanium alloys as to the nature of the fine line markings which appear in the microstruc-tures of unalloyed titanium and a titanium alloys. These markings have been variously called x phase, etching pits, and twins. Figs. 1 to 3 show typical examples of the line markings as they appear, respectively, in high purity iodide titanium, commercial purity titanium rod, and a high purity a alloy containing 0.2 pct N. The commercial purity titanium sample, shown in Fig. 2, contains both line markings and some spheroidal retained-ß phase. The ß phase seen in this micrograph should not be confused with the line marking, since it originates from the iron present as an impurity in the sponge metal. It will be noted that the line markings seem to have a definite orientation pattern with respect to the grains and in titanium noticeably resemble the precipitation occurring in artificially aged high purity Al-Cu alloys. This similarity led to the hypothesis that the line markings observed in titanium and a titanium alloys resulted from precipitation of some unknown phase. With the work of Hägg1 and McQuillan2 as background, there was little reason to suspect hydrogen of being responsible for the line markings. Hagg reported that up to 33 atomic pct H was soluble in a titanium, and McQuillan reported an a solubility of up to 8 atomic pct. Furthermore, McQuillan examined metallographically a 5.1 atomic pct H alloy quenched from 300°C and stated that the structure appeared to be a single-phase a solid solution. Line markings have been observed frequently and were first noted by Jaffee and Campbell3 in 1949. They did not observe them in vacuum-annealed titanium and a Ti-O and Ti-N alloys, but did observe them in Ti-H alloys containing 0.25, 0.5, and 1 atomic pct H. They stated that it was doubtful that the markings were a second phase based on hydrogen, because 1 atomic pct was far from the accepted solid solubility of hydrogen in titanium. Finlay, Resketo, and Vordahl,4 in 1950, concluded that the markings were a true second phase as a result of observations on their etching characteristics. Anderson5 Commenting on these markings in titanium was inclined to associate them with hydrogen, but was loath to call them titanium hydride, because of the reported high solubility of hydrogen. Work at Battelle Memorial Institute for the Navy Bureau of Aeronautics," done concurrently with the work described in this paper, provided information on the experiment converse to that described by Jaffee and Campbell in 1949. This work showed that the amount of line markings in unalloyed titanium could be decreased by vacuum annealing at elevated temperature. It was suggested that this was the result of removal of hydrogen; previously, the data of Jaffee and Campbell9 howed that the markings appeared when hydrogen was added. Recent work at Battelle for the Ordnance Corps, Department of the Army, which is described here, now establishes the identity of the markings as a titanium hydride phase. A sample of high-purity titanium rod 1/4 in. diam, 0.009±0.001 wt pct H (0.43 atomic pct), Fig. 1, was resistance heated in a 0.05 micron vacuum for 41/2 hr at 1500°C. During the early states of heating, the pressure increased to 150 microns, indicating that gases were being evolved. After cooling in vacuum, the iodide titanium rod was analyzed for hydrogen. Vacuum-fusion analysis showed 0.0006 ±0.0003 wt pct H (0.03 atomic pct) to be present.* Metallographic examination of the vacuum-annealed rod showed only a transformed ß structure. Introduction As the Sherritt Gordon property is still in the development stage, . it is rather difficult to write a proper account of the mining methods and milling practice that will be used. While the general scheme of operation will remain the same, there will undoubtedly be many minor changes to meet special conditions which we cannot forsee at the present time. Most of the work accomplished to date has followed the usual routine of preliminary development in the Canadian North. However, we have learned a few things which might be of use to others operating under similar conditions. The most important of these is the saving in power cost made possible by the use of Diesels as against steam power when using wood fuel, and the movement of freight by tractors when rail transportation is not available. Location The property i6 located about 90 miles north of The Pas, or 40 miles northeast of the Flin Flon mine. A branch line from Cranberry Portage, on the?C. N. railway, between Flin Flon and The Pas, connects the property with the outside.

In the past few years the world petroleum industry has increasingly felt the weight of changes in the principal economic factors affecting pro¬fits. As a result of, these changes, it has been necessary for many oil companies to acquire certain new facilities in order to strengthen their competitive positions and thereby protect their tremendous investments in crude oil reserves, pipe line facilities, refining operations, and marketing outlets. Principally these needs have been met by new capital outlays. A supplementary, method of acquiring needed facilities, however, has been to obtain existing facilities through complete or partial acquisition of other companies.' properties. It is this method of meeting competitive pressures with which this paper is concerned. This paper presents a statistical breakdown of the mergers and acquisitions which occurred in the oil industry between January 1, 1954, and October 1, 1959, showing the frequency' with which certain types of properties were acquired in each of the years studied. In addition, it discusses the principal economic conditions which stimulated many of these property trans¬fers, comments on the effects of these mergers on the consuming public, and indicates the types of, mergers and the rate at which they may be expected during the next three or four years. The basic data upon which the statistical analysis presented in this paper is based were taken from several published sources. Obviously they are somewhat incomplete because not all mergers and acquisitions were reported However;, a careful search was conducted through, The Wall Street, Journal, The Oil and Gas Journal, Potroleum Week, and The Oil Daily with the result that the data should be reasonably complete and comparable for each of the years studied, It is believed, therefore, that the statistical analysis which' follows provides a reasonably accurate indication of the general trend in mergers and acquisitions during the period studied.

A public awareness of and commitment to abate pollution of water, air, and soil continues to stimulate demand for industrial minerals and rocks capable of neutralizing strong and weak acids. The role of acid neutralizing agents is 1) to treat acidified water and soil until the desired pH is attained and 2) to remove acid-forming compounds from industrial processes to mitigate the formation of acidic discharges. Environmental applications for these agents include: acid rain mitigation, neutralization and prevention of acidic industrial process discharges, and treatment of acid mine drainage and coal refuse. Desulfurization of industrial flue gases involves removal of sulfate compounds capable of combining with hydrogen to form acids. Details of flue gas desulfurization are covered in the previous chapter on Flue Gas Desulfurization. Ideally, the neutralization of acids results in an upward adjustment of effluent pH 7, or neutrality. The final pH value for many acid treated wastes, especially industrial discharge streams, is commonly over neutralized to pH 8.5 to 9.5. The Clean Water Act sets the upper discharge limit at pH 9. ACID NEUTRALIZATION REAGENTS Acid neutralization is accomplished by adding alkali metal and alkaline earth metal compounds to acidic water or soil until the desired pH is attained. The commonly used alkali ions are calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), and potassium (K). Sodium hydroxide, high calcium and dolomitic hydrate, high calcium and dolomitic lime (quicklime), high calcium and dolomitic limestone, soda ash, and magnesium oxide are the compounds most commonly applied to raise the pH of acidic waters or soils. Limestone and dolomitic limestone, which are calcium and magnesium carbonates, and their equivalent oxides and hydrates formed by calcination, are the industrial materials most commonly used in the manufacture of reagents for acid neutralization. Approximately 327 kt of high calcium and dolomitic lime were consumed for acid neutralization purposes in 1988. Magnesite and brucite are industrial minerals that compete with dolomitic limestone for the magnesium-oxide market. Production of caustic calcined magnesia for neutralization purposes exceeded 6 kt in 1990. Soda ash is an industrial mineral gaining increased acceptance in the neutralization of acid waste discharges. Approximately 182 kt of soda ash were consumed in 1990 for acid waste treatment or acid prevention by flue gas desulfurization. Other mineral products either consumed in minor quantities or receiving attention as future neutralizing agents include zeolite and hectorite. In some cases, waste products have been found to be suitable and cost effective for neutralization of acids. Common wastes gaining acceptance include basic slag, phosphate mining refuse, cement kiln dust, fly ash, and mine tailings.

An analysis was conducted to determine the effects of blasting on slope stability and downstream comminution processes. To investigate these effects, the extent of blast-induced rock damage and the magnitude of induced stress were examined. This analysis showed that damage may extend up to 500 meters (1MPa, tensile strength) in the rock mass, a distance that is sufficient to impact the pit-scale slope over the long term. In addition, the damage zone was calculated using the reasonable assumption that compressive waves are the primary agent in microfracturing during blast fragmentation. The calculated damage zone ? up to 5.6 meters (30MPa, 30% of the compressive strength) ? indicates that microfracturing can occur throughout the entire rock mass in the blasting area. Finally, an economic analysis was conducted by comparing two reasonably assumed blasts in a copper mine. The change in energy required for crushing and grinding was demonstrated using Bond?s law after increasing the blast energy from 180kcal/t to 350kcal/t. A total cost saving of 13.3% ($9.4M) was achieved with the increase. An optimal blast design should consider both slope stability (safety) and downstream comminution energy (production).

Este trabalho visa apresentar alguns resultados obtidos através de ensaios balísticos realizados em sistemas de blindagem multicamada. Seguindo as especificações da norma americana NIJ 0101.06, foram realizados ensaios utilizando munição de calibre 7,62x 51 mm, que possui velocidade acima de 800 m/s. A blindagem multicamada utilizada possui como camada frontal uma pastilha hexagonal cerâmica (alumina dopada com 4% de nióbia), segunda camada de compósito de matriz poliéster reforçada com tecido de juta e como terceira camada uma placa de alumino 5052 H34. A utilização de compósitos poliméricos reforçados com fibras naturais em substituição às fibras de aramida é de grande interesse, pois além de desempenharem a mesma função no sistema de blindagem, possuem um valor de mercado bem menor. Com os resultados obtidos do ensaio balístico, os valores foram associados com o seu comportamento dinâmico utilizando o método do casamento de impedâncias.

During the year terminating at the date for the third annual meeting of Engineering Foundation, the Board completed, its undertaking to sustain the National Research Council for one year. Assistance given in the organization of the National Research Council has been amply justified by the results. The Council is now well established in a 4¬story building at 1023 16th Street, N. W., Washington, and has recently secured another similar building near by in order to house its increasing force. The breadth, importance and volume of work done have steadily grown. Foreign offices have recently been established in London and Paris, Dr. H. A. Bumstead being in charge of the former and Dr. William F. Durand of the latter. The total expenditure by Engineering Foundation for the National Research Council was $9,036, derived partly from income of the endowment fund and partly from special gifts from Ambrose Swasey and Edward D. Adams. In May, Walter M. Gilbert was appointed Assistant Secretary of Engineering. Foundation, with headquarters in Washington, his services being contributed by the Carnegie Institution. He also became and has remained to date Assistant Secretary of the National Research Council. In September, resolutions were exchanged between the Engineering Foundation Board and the National Research Council, setting forth a policy of continuing reciprocal relationship, and a conference committee, Chairman M. I. Pupin, Dr. Charles Warren Hunt, and Gano Dunn, was appointed to inform the National Research Council of the readiness of Engineering Foundation to work upon definite problems sug-gested by the Council. No problems have yet been suggested.

"As the stirrer speed directly affects the motion of grinding media, and hence the interactions with material particles to be ground, the rotation speed of a stirred mill is well recognized as one of the most important factors affecting the grinding performance. In this work, the effect of stirrer speed on grinding performance in terms of grinding rate and grinding energy efficiency was quantitatively investigated. Batch wet grinding tests of quartz powder at different stirrer speeds were performed, using a self-made horizontal stirred mill with alumina balls as grinding media. Grinding time, operating power and the sizes of ground product were recorded to analyse the grinding performance. The test results showed that grinding processes followed the first order grinding kinetics. The grinding rate constant increased with the increasing stirrer speed. Based on the grinding kinetics, the grinding energy equation was established. The energy utilization coefficient in the energy equation can be used as an indicator of energy efficiency. The energy efficiency decreased with the increasing stirrer speed. Quantitatively, with the stirrer tip speed increasing from 4.25m/s to 9.35m/s, the grinding rate constant was improved by 441.47%, whereas the energy utilization coefficient was decreased by 39.35%. The grinding rate constant and energy utilization coefficient can be used to evaluate the grinding performance when the grinding conditions need to be adjusted. The adjustment of grinding conditons would be optimal when grinding rate get significant improved with little decrease of energy efficiency."

Prior to this time, ample supplies of high grade mineral fillers, such as clay, have been available close to consuming centers. Now depletion of these accessible deposits, coupled with other factors such as increasing demand due to population expansion and standard of living rise, has made development of upgrading techniques attractive to producers. Various investigations being carried out by the U.S. Bureau of Mines are described. Factors making the development of improved methods for upgrading clays attractive to producers include: depletion of accessible deposits of high-grade clays, rising transportation and labor costs, more exacting specifications, and increased demand resulting from an expanding population and a constantly rising standard of living. Industry recognizes the need for upgrading presently unusable materials and has cooperated with the U.S. Bureau of Mines by providing samples from submarginal deposits and by evaluating the products that USBM upgrades. Following are some examples of recent clay beneficiation work by the Bureau. FIRE CLAY BENEFICIATION At the Rolla Metallurgical Center, Rolla, Mo., the Bureau is conducting research to develop technically and economically feasible mineral-dressing methods to remove quartz, pyrite, and other impurities from submarginal fire clays. The research has been spurred by the growing shortage of high-grade bur-ley, flint, and plastic clays in the Missouri fire-clay district resulting from increased consumption and the low rate of discovery of new deposits of adequate quality. There apparently is ample tonnage of submarginal flint and plastic clays to maintain the industry for many years if such material can be upgraded to commercial quality. Samples have been submitted to USBM by several major producers of refractories, including A. P. Green Fire Brick Co.; Harbison-Walker Refractories Co.; Mexico Refractories Div., Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp.; and Wellsville Fire Brick Co. Research on some samples has been completed and still is in progress on others. The Bureau has found that specimens containing quartz or pyrite in grains coarser than the accompanying clay generally can be upgraded either with a gravity table or hydraulic cyclone. The improvement in quality is notable not only in chemical analysis but in an increase in pyrometric cone equivalent (PCE) of one or more cones. As an example, consider the results attained on a sandy flint—a fine-grained mixture of kaolin and halloysite with quartz and minor quantities of iron and manganese oxides. Chemical analysis was: 35.4 pct alumina (A12O3) and 47.8 pct silica (SiO2). The sample contained 9.2 pct free silica as quartz. The PCE was 33. The sample was crushed to -10-mesh, blunged with water, and then stage-ground to -48-mesh. The ground sample was tabled to yield a clay fraction containing 37.6 pct A12O3, and 45.3 pct SiO2 of which 2.4 pct was free silica. The PCE was 34. Recovery of alumina by this process was 73.6 pct. Concentration of the same clay in the hydraulic cyclone was even more effective in respect to quartz removal. The clay fraction analyzed 38.6 pct A12O3, 45.0 pct SiO2 of which 0.5 pct was free silica as quartz, and had a PCE of 34. Recovery of alumina was 71.9 pct. The hydraulic cyclone was also effective in reducing the pyrite content of a plastic clay which likewise was a mixture of kaolin and halloysite, plus some pyrite, quartz, and carbonaceous material. It analyzed 30.6 pct Al2O3, 52.3 pct SiO2, 2.3 pct Fe2O3, and 0.76 pct S. The sample was blunged and screened through 10-mesh to remove some coarse pyrite, then ground to -65-mesh and cycloned to remove most of the remainder. The final product recovered 81.8 pct of the alumina at a grade of 32.3 pct A12O3, 50.9 pct SiO2, 1.4 pct Fe2O3, and 0.1 pct S. The PCE was 32-1/2, compared with a PCE of 31-1/2 for the crude clay. The fine beneficiated clays, of course, must be pelletized and dried or fired to meet commercial acceptance. This operation has already been solved by industry. Little progress has been made on two remaining problems. One is that of fine-grained impurities, not separable by table or cyclone. Flotation is being investigated to solve this. Although fine pyrite is readily rejected, a satisfactory quartz-clay separation has not been attained. The second problem, a stubborn one, is that of alkali. Geologic, geotechnical and hydrologic studies were performed for the design of 115 deep, large diameter drilled shaft reinforced concrete foundations (6 to 12 feet) to support tall steel monopoles for a new 13-mile long 230/69kV transmission line in southwestern Arizona. The subsurface conditions along the alignment posed a wide range of challenges for performing investigation and design studies. These conditions include saturated, loose granular flood plain deposits with generally low lateral capacity, potential ground loss up to 23 feet due to occasional river flow (scour and embankment loss), liquefaction impacts from nearby active fault seismicity that can generate magnitude 6.5-7.0 earthquakes, and unsaturated alluvial and eolian sand-dominated soils to full depth with low lateral capacity. All conditions will require significantly deeper than normal foundation embedment (depth ranging from 22 to 77 feet) and will present construction difficulty due to ground instability from groundwater and dry soil sloughing. A phased investigation was performed to accurately characterize the conditions for design and construction, and included performing a review of existing data, detailed field geologic reconnaissance, a limited number of standard exploratory borings (limited access), seismic cone penetrometer soundings (SCPT) in saturated soils to better understand liquefaction and strength loss potential, and hydrologic analyses to estimate scour/ground loss potential. This paper describes the site conditions, presents details on the investigation team’s approach, documents findings in relation to deep foundation analysis and design, and discusses recommendations for foundation construction to help in reducing risk.

In the United States water pollution resulting from mining activities has long been recognized as a major environmental problem Mine drainage pollution results from many types of mining activities and includes both physical (i e , sedimentation) and chemical (i e , acidification, metal contamination, etc ) pollutants Active and abandoned surface and underground mines, mineral processing plants, mine and processing plant waste disposal areas, haulage roads, and tailing ponds are typical sources of mine related water pollution (130) One of the most serious pollution problems arising from mining activities is acid mine drainage resulting from the chemical reaction of sulfide minerals (commonly iron sulfides) and air in the presence of water Acid mine drainage is commonly associated with coal and hard rock mining areas in the United States In general the more serious and extensive acid mine drainage problems exist in the more humid coal regions east of the Mississippi River (11) In 1964 the U S Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service, reported that acid mine drainage adversely affected fish and wildlife habitat in 9,477 kilometers (5,890 miles) of streams and 6,062 hectares (14,967 acres) of impoundments in 20 states in the United States (64) Of the total affected waters, coal mining operations accounted for 97 percent of the acid mine drainage pollution reported for streams and 93 percent of that reported for impoundments In 1970 more than 19,308 kilometers (12,000 miles) of streams in the United States were reportedly significantly degraded by mining related pollution (130) Of the total affected kilometers, 16,920 kilometers (10,516 miles) or approximately 88 percent were located in the Appalachian coal region (Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, eastern Kentucky, Tennessee, Maryland, and Alabama) In addition, more than 965 kilometers (600 miles) of streams reportedly were degraded by coal mining in states in the Illinois, Western Interior, and Rocky Mountain coal regions The remaining portion of the stream pollution resulted from the mining of (1) copper (california, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wyoming), (2) lead and zinc (Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, and Tennessee), (3) uranium (Rocky Mountain States), (4) iron (Lake Superior iron region), (5) sand and gravel (all states), (6) phosphate (Florida and other states), (7) gold (Alaska), (8) bauxite and barite (Arkansas), and (9) molybdenum, gold, and other metals (Colorado) Abandoned mines and abandoned mine waste disposal areas contribute a large portion of the total pollution resulting from mining activities Numerous abandoned underground mines are located throughout the United States and many are discharging mine drainage pollutants In 1966 the U S Bureau of Mines estimated that more than 88,000 inactive and abandoned underground mines were in existance (126) A listing of these mines by state is presented in Table 1 0-1 More recent estimates indicate that this list is incomplete In Colorado alone there is

A proposed alternative to the conventional zinc extraction processes is the flash reduction of zinc calcines. As part of an overall study of this process, the kinetics of single zinc oxide pellets were investigated. Pellets, compacted from Outokumpu zinc calcine (60.9% zinc, 9.6% iron), were suspended in a flow of CO/CO, mixtures and reduced at temperatures between 1000 and 1200°C and atmospheric pressure. The pellet weight loss with time was recorded and analyzed. It was found that the reduction of calcine pellets (0.9 cm height and 1.36 cm diameter) was controlled by chemical reaction. This paper includes an analysis of the experimental results of two previous investigations of ZnO reduction.

Cerium and thorium sulfides have found use as crucible materials for melting certain radioactive metals. However, thermodynamic treatment of these sulfides has been hampered by lack of experimentally derived entropy values. This Bureau of Mines report describes heat-capacity measurements between 51° and 298° K, and entropy evaluations at 298.15° K, for cerium monosulfide (CeS), cerium sesquisulfide (Ce2S3), and thorium disulfide (THS2). The entropy values, with Literature results for the heats of formation, are used to obtain free energies of formation at 298.15°K. MATERIALS The samples used in this work were supplied by Prof, Leo Brewer of the Department of Chemistry, University of California. The methods of preparation and some of the physical and chemical properties of these sulfides were given by Eastman and coworkers.3 4/ Chemical analyses, conducted in our laboratory, gave the following results:

Coke Since the beginning of manufacturing of metallurgical coke in the United States, which dates from about 1859, Pennsylvania has main tamed supremacy in coke production Available statistics for the year 1880 show an output of 3,338,300 short tons, which was neatly trebled by the end of the succeeding 10 years. From this time on the increase was steady, though not rapid, and in 1922 the total production was 13,991,892 tons, which is approximately 37 per cent of the total coke production of the United States. The main reason for the rapid development of the coke industry in Pennsylvania lies in the abundance of coals particularly adapted to beehive coking, for which purpose the Pittsburgh bed in the Connellsville district has long been looked upon as standard At first practically all metallurgical coke was made in beehive ovens, the only exception being the short lived and wasteful method of coking in piles, byproduct owns did not make then appearance until after 1893 The suitability of a beehive coking coal cannot be accurately predicted from its chemical analysis, but it can be said, perhaps, that the volatile matter should be about 32 per cent, and that the oxygen content should not be mole than 10 pet cent or less than 4 per cent The sulphur and phosphorus content should be small-not over 1 25 per cent sulphur and under 0 02 pen cent phosphorus-and the ash content should not be over 7 per cent The Pittsburgh bed at Connellsvnlle fills these requirements well, as may be seen from the following representative analysis. Brick shales and refractory clays are mined at Sumas Mountain near Abbotsford. Sholes and stoneware clays elsewhere in the province have not been developed. THE SUMAS MOUNTAIN deposit near Abbotsford, 80 km east of Vancouver, has been in continuous production since 1905. The deposit is exposed in a small outlier and comprises a sequence of alternating beds of clay and sand. Beds are of Eocene age. Within the 400 m thick ness of sediments are seven distinctive conglomerate members, some up to 20 m thick, interbedded with fine grained sediments including claystones and siltstone , or "shales". Shale is quarried to produce a variety of bricks, sewer pipes and similar products; it is also used for cement. Several different shale beds have been mined over the years and exhibit a variety of fired colours ranging from buff-pink grey to deep red; pyrometric cone equivalents (PCE) range from 3 to 20. A layer of fireclay 3 to 4 m thick that occurs at the base of the sequence has pinkish white to light buff fired colour and PCE of 30 to 33. It is used as a 266 primary component to produce refractory bricks. The shale is quarried and processed by Clayburn Industries Limited of Abbotsford. Another similar but smaller outlier of the same geological formation is known from Blue Mountain, about 20 km northwest of Mission. Other ceramic clays in British Columbia are reported from Quesnel (7 m bed of white stoneware clay, PCE 17 to 19), Giscome Rapids (25 km north of Prince George, 10 m bed of stoneware clay to PCE 31) and anaimo-Comox area (buff to red firing "shales", PCE 8 to 10-1 12) . From 1959 to 1974 Cretaceous shale from Saturna Island in the Strait of Georgia was used to produce lightweight aggregate. Similar deposits of expanding shale are known from the vicinity of Duncan on Vancouver Island.

The 1987 recovery in the US mining industry permitted modest increases in exploration expenditures that year (Fig. 1). Favorable market conditions apparently allowed the gains to be sus¬tained in 1988. There was great uncer¬tainty early in the year as to whether world and US economic growth would be a casualty of the October 1987 worldwide stock market crash. By nearly all measures, the performance of the US minerals industry was strong¬. A weak US dollar and the strong growth of worldwide capital spending resulted in in¬creased US exports of con¬sumer and producer durable items as well as strong domes¬tic demand for metals. In fact, 1988 US steel industry exports reached levels not attained since the mid-1970s. It was re¬ported that steel industry labor productivity is now roughly twice the 1981 level. Among metals with signifi¬cant average nominal price increases in 1988 over 1987 levels were copper (43%), alu¬minum (52%0), and zinc (44%). Even though domestic copper production has grown since 1984 by 30% in mining and 24% in refining, em¬ployment in mining and milling is 4% below the 1984 level. Domestic unit costs are reported in the range of $1.10 to $1.33/kg (50 to 60 cents per lb). The US base metals industry is proba¬bly in its best cash position in many years. However, there has not been a large increase in exploration expendi¬tures. This is due mostly to the percep¬tion that worldwide capacity can easily be increased. Industry reports do show that "low cost" copper producers have been buying reserves from weaker com¬panies. The 1987 Society of Economic Ge¬ologists (SEG) survey of exploration activity indicated that 95 cents out of every exploration dollar spent by US and Canadian firms was for base and precious metals (Economic Geology, January 1989). Press reports, though, make it clear that most of that spending was targeted for precious metals. US claim staking data (Fig. 2) rein¬forces this suspicion. The apparent lag in new claim filings in Alaska and phe¬nomenal growth in filings in the lower 48 states suggests that exploration is directed at relatively low risk targets. In the conterminous 48, more than 40% of the new claims were made in Nevada, indicating an emphasis on gold (although even Nevada had some base metals exploration). Even with a price decline during 1988, the difference between the gold price and average global "cash" production cost of $7.30/g ($227 per oz) still leaves room for an attractive return (Northern Miner, 1988). Exploration plans and results Metals Economics Group (Halifax) indicated in its 1988 exploration survey that exploration expenditures by US and South African firms would be at about 1987 levels. It also reported that Canadian and Australian firms were ex¬pected to reduce their exploration spend¬ing significantly. Firms in both coun¬tries were caught in changes in tax laws. In Canada, the Mining Ex¬ploration Depletion Allow¬ance (MEDA) once permitted generous tax write-offs to in¬dividuals investing in miner¬als exploration. It was to be replaced in January 1989 with the Canadian Exploration In¬centives Program (CEIP). Although structured and ad¬ministered differently than MEDA, CEIP can provide an equivalent or possibly greater financial incentive for min¬eral exploration, for junior mining companies. In 1987, it is estimated that junior com¬panies accounted for two¬-thirds of the off-property (or grass roots) exploration ex¬penditures in Canada. Australia will revoke the tax exemption for gold in 1990. Australian operators, therfore, were expected to concentrate efforts on speeding up pro¬duction during 1988 and 1989. In 1988, Chile and Mali announced special efforts to attract gold explora¬tion by foreign companies. The Cana¬dian government continues to express concern about the write-off (and drawdown) of base metal reserves. Crushing and grinding practice in Sweden follows largely the international pattern. Certain special circumstances, however, have had an influence on the development. Most mines are worked underground in either quite small or in very large units. To utilize small sulphide ores, custom milling is rather common. Apart from the cement industry, the rock species treated are hard and abrasive. Another important factor is the increasingly strict requirements placed on the mechanical condition of different products, especially lump ores and coarse iron ore concentrates. A significant feature in the design and development of Swedish crushing and grinding practice has also been close cooperation between machinery manufacturers and the users. An account of these conditions and an outline of the crushing and grinding techniques employed in Sweden are presented in this paper with emphasis on the mining industry. For background purposes it may be mentioned that crude ore production in Sweden last year included 45 mill. tonsx) of iron ore, of which some 20 mill. tons from Kiruna alone, and 4 mill. tons of sulphide ore from 22 other mines, fig. 1. In addition 8 mill. tons of limestone were quarried for cement production and several million tons of stone and sand for roads, aerated concrete, etc.

The leaching behavior of chalcopyrite concentrate in acidic CuC12-NaCI-O2 solutions was investigated. Experiments were conducted under continuos flow of oxygen at atmospheric pressures. The results indicated that among the variables temperature has the largest influence on the dissolution of chalcopyrite in this medium, and high copper extraction can only be obtained at temperatures near the boiling point of the solution. It was also found that the stirring speed did not influence appreciably the dissolution of chalcopyrite. An increase in the oxygen flow rate up to 0.1 1/min increased the copper extraction. The total chloride concentration affects the dissolution of chalcopyrite up to about 4 M. Copper extraction of 93 % was obtained in leaching chalcopyrite of size fraction -400 # Tyler at 105 OC in 2 hours.
