"The most important characteristic of open-pored metals is porosity, since it enables all of their functional applications as filters or sound absorbers. Due to the notch effect of the pores, mechanical properties of porous metals are better than the ones of comparable structures made of polymers or ceramics. Consequently, only open-pored metals can be used in aircrafts to reduce flow noise or noise resulting from the core engine by acoustic absorption. Absorption properties depend highly on pore size and porosity of the material, which must be characterized as precisely as possible in order to analyze the correlation between morphology and noise reduction performance. Here, a line segmenting method is explained in order to characterize pore size and porosity of absorber materials using image processing based on two dimensional microscopy images, including sample preparation and specification of the set-up. Then, the influence of the pore structure on the measured absorption behavior is discussed. Finally, the correlation of acoustic behavior, pore morphology, and porosity is outlined.IntroductionSignificant noise loads affect everyone causing anxiety, depression, insomnia and other effects which impair health and productivity [1],[2]. Due to the rising number of flights and aircrafts, air traffic noise increases dramatically. To counter this development, various approaches have been developed to reduce the different noise sources resulting from airframe, jet or engine [3],[4],[5],[6]. One approach to reduce this noise is the application of noise reducing liners in the hot gas path [7]. This is especially important, since the engine is becoming the dominant noise source of modern airplanes during take-off [8]. Due to the elevated temperatures and high fatigue loading in this part of the aero-engine, conventional passive absorber materials cannot be used. Polymers would not be able to bear the heat and ceramic fibers would crack under the mechanical loading due to the notch effect. Consequently, this study focuses on metals with open pores, which can resist elevated temperatures and fatigue loading and additionally resemble geometrically conventional passive absorbers. Based on the production processes, e.g. sintering of metal fibers [7], powder processing using a foaming agent [9], coating of polymer foams [10], or using melt infiltration techniques [11], the characteristic dimension of the porosity is usually in the range of 0.01-10mm. In this work, sintered metals and metal sponges are analyzed after the theory of sound absorption is briefly outlined. Then, measurements of the acoustic absorption of metal sponges and sintered metals in an impedance tube are performed. To understand and predict the acoustic properties of metals with open porosity, it is necessary to characterize the materials as precisely as possible. This is explained in detail using a line segmenting technique, followed by a discussion of the connection of pore characteristics and acoustic absorption. Finally, a conclusion is given."

THE determination of retained austenite by X-ray diffraction uses the following relationship:"" Pa = constant . RVaA (8) [1] where: P is the diffracted power from phase a; R, the calculated intensity factor; A, the absorption correction; 8, the diffraction angle; and Va, the irradiated volume of phase a For a flat sample making a glancing angle + with the incident beam the absorption correction is calculated as: * 1 sin (28 - 4) A .= 1 [2] µ sin, (28 — 4) + sin 4 where µ is the linear absorption coefficient. Beu3 has proposed that the computed absorption correction be combined with the constant and that the experimental observation of the absorption correction used in the original method be eliminated. This procedure is permissible only if: 1—There is no preferred orientation in the sample, and 2—The geometric requirements have been met precisely. If these conditions are not met the validity of the determination is questionable. Unfortunately the necessary conditions must be tested experimentally for each determination, and this is done most easily by observing whether the apparent absorption has the form of Eq. 2. In practice it may be convenient to plot P/R vs the parameter sin (2? — )[sin (28 — +) + sin +] to obtain straight lines for the ap- parent absorption correction. Deviations from straight lines indicate either that the sample has not been positioned correctly or that the relative intensities are incorrect. Geiger counter spectrometer methods also have been used successfully for retained austenite determinations. In the usual spectrometer arrangement the sample makes equal angles with the incident and diffracted beams (8 = ); thus the absorption correction is simply 1/2µ and independent of 8. The retained austenite is then easily calculated from integrated intensity measurements on austenite and martensite lines. If the austenite content is not too low and if excessive fluorescence is not encountered it is possible to use filtered radiation and a recording spectrometer. The integrated intensities are then proportional to the areas of the diffraction peaks. For lower austenite contents the following technique was used: A bent quartz monochromator and a Geiger counter spectrometer are employed. The monochromatic radiation is focused on the front slit, and the counter slit is made broad enough to include the entire line. A series of readings are taken in the vicinity of the diffraction peak. The highest reading includes the diffraction line plus background. The background is obtained from the average of several readings on each side of the peak. The integrated intensity is obtained by subtraction. CrK, and FeKa have been used for such determinations. This technique has been found to be as sensitive and as accurate as the photographic methods. In the spectrometer methods the ratio austenite/ martensite may be obtained from readings on austenite and martensite lines and the application of Eq. 1. It is also possible to use external standards and to obtain the austenite contents from measurements on the austenite lines alone. The small correction for carbides then becomes unnecessary. Earlier we described the uranium mineralogy of an areally broad sampling of Crownpoint ore, including the characterization of organic carbonaceous material associated with the uranium mineral. (1) We also reported on the leaching behavior of Crownpoint ores with a mild alkaline leaching system, oxygen (02)-sodium bicarbonate (NaHC03). (2) There was a wide range of leaching responses, with samples from some areas leaching at a slow rate with low uranium recovery. Evidence indicates that in these samples the organic material is intimately associated with the uranium mineral and shields it to some extent from contact by the leachate. (1,2) One method to obtain faster leach rates and higher recoveries is to use a chemically severe leaching system such as sodium hypochlorite (NaOCI) as an oxidant. (3) The use of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and an oxidant for leaching ore in surface milling operations is widely practiced to effect high recovery of uranium (U308) from the ore. (4,5,6) The U308 is mobilized as the disulfate complex, U02(S04)224-, or possibly, the trisulfate complex, U02(S04)34-, is the soluble species. (7) Sulfuric acid leachate formulations were used in the first in-situ leaching operation in the Shirley Basin in Wyoming. (8) More recently H2S04 formulations have been used in the Rocky Mountain Energy field tests in the Powder River Basin (Bear Creek) and in the Teapot forma¬tion at Nine Mile Lake site near Casper. (9,10) Laboratory studies related to the use of H2SO4 for in-situ leaching have been reported (11-17) and Yan has .reported packed column leach studies on Crownpoint ore using H2504 and oxidant. In an autogenous grinding circuit in which feed at approximately nine inches top size is reduced to a size suitable for subsequent processing, the build- up of a "critical size" fraction in the media causes problems. A "critical size" fraction has been defined as, "media too small to effect reduction by impact grinding of ore coarser than a quarter of an inch and too large to be broken by the largest size of media in the charge. 9, (1) The buildup of a "critical size" fraction reduces the capacity of the mill, increases the grinding power requirements per ton of finished product, and generally produces a finer grind than is desired. It is general practice to overcome this problem by the addition of large diameter steel balls to the grinding charge. This has certain disadvantages, such as; (i) an increase in mill liner wear; (ii) wear on the steel balls, and; (iii) some loss in flexibility in grinding circuit operations resulting from difficulties in removing the steel balls by means other than by grinding out.

INTRODUCTION MOST of the electron diffraction studies of oxide films which form on metals and alloys have been carried out by oxidizing the specimens in an auxiliary furnace, cooling down to room temperature and then inserting the sample in the camera and taking a diffraction photograph. Prior to the investigations at the Westinghouse Research Laboratories, no systematic study of the oxidation of any metal or alloy had been made over a wide temperature range with photographs taken at elevated temperatures except the investigation of iron by Jackson and Quarrell.1 In order to interpret the electron diffraction patterns of the oxides which may form on alloys, it seemed advisable to make a comprehensive study of the oxidation of the purest metals available in the bulk form. Thus far studies have been completed on iron,2 cobalt,2 nickel,2 chromium ,2 Copper2, tungsten,3 molybdenum,3 beryllium ,4 uranium,4 thorium4 titanium5 and zirconium5 while investigations are in progress on tantalum and columbium, The next step in the study is concerned with the investigation of the oxides which form on binary alloys. Some of the alloys consist of a single, phase while others contain more than one phase. The identification of the oxides on the surface of a binary alloy may be more difficult than on the metals since oxides containing both metals as well as those of each metal separately may form. Furthermore, it is possible that solid solutions of the various oxides may occur. In these cases the electron diffraction method may not be able to identify the oxidation products unequivocally, Examples of solid solutions which may present difficulties are MoO2 and W02, Fe3O4 and FeO-Cr2O3 since the diffraction patterns are so similar. Since electron diffraction can determine only the structure of the oxide, the chemical composition must be inferred from the diffraction data based upon X ray diffraction investigations of specimens of known composition. It is possible in some cases to decide whether a given solid phase reaction can occur on the surface of an alloy by a study of available thermodynamic data. Table I lists the equations for the formation of most of the oxides from the elements together with values of log10 KR for the several temperatures. Calculations may be made using the values given in Table I to determine whether a given solid phase reaction is possible thermodynamically. The Bureau of Mines sought to correlate the variation of structure-sensitive superconducting properties with microstructure in selected Cb-Hf alloys and to compare the experimental results with those predicted by the GLAG theory. Alloys in wire and rod form were evaluated by critical temperature, critical current, magnetization, resistivity measurements, and optical and electron microscopy. In the absence of an external magnetic field, the current carrying capacity of columbium was greatly reduced with addition of up to 85 wt pct Hf, but a large increase in Ic occurred for Cb-90 wt pct Hf. Favorable Ic-H behavior was observed in cold-drawn alloys containing 25 and 57 wt pct Hf. Correspondingly, a maximum in Tc occurred at 10-25 and 90 wt pct Hf. Four- or five-hour heat treatment at 600° C resulted in maximum Ic values and maximum hysteresis in magnetization. Dislocation pileup, polygonization, and fine precipitates, responsible for flux pinning, are listed in order of their effectiveness as pinning sites. Sites having an average separation of 1,500 to 3,000 A and a diameter of 1,000 A or less were most effective in influencing Ic-H and M-H behavior. The resistive critical fields increased smoothly to a maximum of 80 k0e between 60 and 65 wt pct Hf. Highfield, mixed state, reversible paramagnetism was observed in some alloys; however, the GLAG theory was in good agreement with experimental results for the majority of the composition range studied.

In the course of a study of the electronic and thermodynamic properties of Pb-Se alloys it was found necessary to have an accurate knowledge of the phase diagram. However, the literature is in disagreement as to whether or not a monotectic reaction occurs in the lead rich portion of the phase diagram. Pelabonl reported only a two-phase region consisting of lead-rich liquid and solid PbSe extending from almost pure lead to the compound PbSe, and gave the melting point of PbSe as 1065°C. The data of Friedrich and Leroux2 are in general agreement with this type of diagram, with the melting point of the compound being 1088°C. However, Nozato and Igaki by inverse rate thermal analysis observed a monotectic reaction isotherm exlacing at 860°C with a monotectic composition of 20.5 at. pct Se. The miscibility gap in the liquid state extends from 7.5 to 20.5 at. pct Se. Hansen and Anderko4 accepted Nozato and Igaki's phase diagram in the region of the lead-rich monotectic. To reinvestigate this portion of the phase diagram, both thermal analysis and metallographic examination of various compositions were performed. The thermal analysis apparatus was constructed according to the specifications of the National Bureau of Standards. A t/t-l pct Rh thermocouple was calibrated against the melting point of copper (NBS), zinc (NBS), and antimony (A. D. Mackay), the emf being measured with a Rubicon Type B potentiometer sensitive to lpv. The absolute accuracy of the thermal analysis obtainable with this system is ± 0.5oC. Starting materials were semiconductor grade lead and selenium purchased from the American Smelting and Refining Co. Both elements were 99.999 pct pure with only trace impurities detected upon spectroscopic examination. One hundred galloys were sealed in quartz crucibles with a central thermocouple well under a vacuum of less than 1 p. This procedure prevented any composition change due to vaporization during the run. Cooling curves were obtained on the alloys listed in Table I. Data was taken by the direct method at cooling rates ranging between 1/2 to 2°C per min. The alloys were heated well above the liquidus and shaken vigorously to insure homogeneity. No evidence of an arrest indicative of the monotectic reaction was observed, and the two-phase region reported by Pelabonl and Friedrich and Leroux? was confirmed in general, although our data give higher liquidus temperatures than Friedrich and Leroux. The melting point of stoichiomet-ric PbSe determined for two different samples was 1080.7 0.5oC. The results of this investigation are compared with Nozato and Igaki's data in Fig. 1. To Complement the thermal analysis data, an 86 at. pct Pb specimen was examined microscopically. This composition was in the center of the miscibility gap reported by Nozato and Igaki.3 The alloy was heated to 1000°C, held for 1/2 hr, and water quenched. The specimen was polished using standard metallographic techniques for lead. The alloy was etched with an acetic-nitric acid etchant for 10 min at 45°C. Microscopic examination did not indicate the existence of two separate layers or solidified droplets imbedded in a matrix, as would be expected if a miscibility gap were present. The mi-crostructure shown in Fig. 2 consists of uniformly dispersed, dendritic PbSe in a lead-rich matrix.

The single track North Strathfield Rail Underpass (NSRU) consists of a dive structure either end of a 148 m long driven tunnel skewed under three live railway tracks. The tunnel is 8 m high, 9 m wide, with a horseshoe profile, excavated by full face using a road header. Ground cover varied between 2.5 m to 3.5 m. Settlements were 5 mm to 15 mm (the latter due to a dyke). A one pass synthetic fibre reinforced shotcrete lining was installed (no lattice girders or steel sets were used). A system of automated robotic total stations was used to provide real time monitoring of the rail track and associated ground formation. WEIGEL 20] Introduction-Grouting in Mines By definition the word "grout" means a thin mortar, or a kind of plaster or cement, and "grouting" means to fill up or finish with grout. The words "cement," "plaster" and "mortar" mean a substance that is used in a soft state which subsequently hardens. Thus, grouting is the filling of void space with a substance that hardens. Construction cements are the most common substances used, either by themselves or in mixtures, but the term grouting is applied quite correctly when other substances such as plastics and certain chemicals are used. Also, the use of the term grouting to cover the filling of voids with materials that do not actually become hard, such as the flotation tailings used in grouting in the southeast Missouri lead district, should be considered correct, as some stiffening does take place and, anyway, it is a better descriptive term than any substitute. Engineers are interested in grouting because some of the materials with which they must work contain voids, and certain conditions can be improved if these voids can be filled with something solid and permanent. Grouting is done to accomplish several purposes: I. To stop the passage of fluids and gases, 2. To cement materials together to make them stronger, and 3. To prevent consolidation of materials by filling void space with something solid as a replacement for the air and water that could be forced out under load. The construction industry uses grouting extensively for all three purposes. Grouting is used to stop water percolation under and around dams. It is used to control water flow in tunnel driving and in shaft sinking. It is used to improve foundation conditions under civil engineering structures by permanently filling void space and thereby reducing settlement, or by cementing broken rock together and increasing its supporting strength. The oil and gas industry does a lot of grouting, primarily to stop the passage of gases and fluids. The search for oil at increasingly greater depths has meant greater investment per well, and the oil industry has spent large sums on development of improved drilling methods. This

The transportation of solids in pipe lines is a matter of deep concern in many fields of engineering. Much experimental and theoretical work has been done in an effort to devise means of designing pipe lines that will satisfactorily transport given solid loads, but there remain many unanswered questions in this field. The present discussion will be confined to a rather narrow portion of this field and will endeavor to point out certain factors that may well be considered when comparing the relative economy of various installations. The data have been presented previously but a new interpretation was prompted by a suggestion in a paper by Professor O'Brien,' of the University of California, that the friction work per pound of dry material should be considered in determining the relative efficiency of various installations. This method of considering relative economy in various pipe lines leads to some rather unexpected conclusions, especially with reference to the economy of large pipe sizes. A previous suggestion by the writer concerning the economy of a rather peculiar type of installation is strengthened. It is not believed that the considerations set forth herein apply directly in the case of dredge lines, where economy is largely a matter of a high rate of pumping in order to reduce the unit overhead charge. However, it is believed that some value may be gained from these considerations in cases involving the disposal of a fixed amount of solids per unit time with a minimum expenditure of energy and at a low cost for replacement of worn pipes. Such situations are not uncommon in the disposal of mill tailings and the disposal of solids deposited from irrigation waters. It was found that data leading to general conclusions for various pipe sizes were not available but certain definite trends are indicated and methods of analyzing available data are presented in the hope that they may be of assistance in preparing engineering estimates on designs of pipe lines of the type described above. Energy Requirements Carrying out the idea contained in Professor O'Brien's paper concerning the method of computing energy required to transport solids, the following analysis leads to some rather interesting conclusions. In producing and selling coal, the coal company is faced with many different parameters by which the quality of its product is evaluated. One type, which we choose to call the economic parameters, includes moisture, ash, sulfur, and Btu's. These are reasonably well understood by both the coal supplier and the customer, and the dollar values can be placed on them. This is the group of parameters of primary interest to most purchasing agents buying coal. A second group of parameters governs how the coal will behave in the boiler itself and is of primary concern to the engineers designing the boiler and to the men who must operate and maintain it. Since we have not yet learned to put dollar values on these parameters, they generally show up in coal contracts simply as cutoff points, the purchaser simply saying that he will not accept coal outside of certain limits.

A previous suggestion by the writer3 concerning the economy of a rather peculiar type of installation is strengthened. It is not believed that the considerations set forth herein apply directly in the case of dredge lines, where economy is largely a matter of a high rate of pumping in order to reduce the unit overhead charge. However, it is believed that some value may be gained from these considerations in cases involving the disposal of a fixed amount of solids per unit time with a minimum expenditure of energy and at a low cost for replacement of worn pipes. Such situations are not uncommon in the disposal of mill tailings and the disposal of solids deposited from irrigation waters. It was found that data leading to general conclusions for various pipe sizes were not available but certain definite trends are indicated and methods of analyzing available data are presented in the hope that they may be of assistance in preparing engineering estimates on designs of pipe lines of the type described above. Valuation of mining companies and their underlying assets prepared by brokers' analysts are, by necessity, approximations. The reliability of the valuations is entirely proportional to the quality of available data, the reliability of forecasts and the nature of underlying commodity price assumptions. The latter is perhaps the greatest single cause of gross variations in company and asset earnings estimates and- valuations. Assumptions are often necessary regarding commodity price achievement based on commodity hedge positions. Public disclosure from listed companies provides a sound base from which to project earnings, cashflows and balance sheets. The uncommon disclosure of projected production and cost schedules often reduces the reliability of future estimates. The application of reserve and resource estimates is contentious with practitioners applying differing weightings to importance of resources in estimating mine lives (and therefore cashflow streams). Valuation methods applied in equity markets usually focus on relative value and the identification of pricing anomalies. The commonest ""rules of thumb"" applied in the valuation of mining companies (and therefore their underlying assets) is with the use of year specific price/earnings (P/E) and price/cashflow (P/CF) ratios, with low multiples suggesting undervalued assets, high multiples overvalued situations (but these rules can often be clouded by market expectations of underlying commodity price movements). Another simply applied valuation tool is to examine the examine the value placed on reserves and resources by the market. Inexpensive gold in the ground (expressed as $ of market capitalisation per ounce of reserves or resources) might indicate a buying opportunity, but the market does discount the value of gold in the ground prior to mine development and where development risk is perceived.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted studies using microwave energy to stress-crack iron ores. In a microwave chamber which simulates a continuous throughput operation, the Bond grindability of a taconite sample was improved by 13 pct at a bulk temperature of 197? C. To further improve the economics of microwave fracturing, higher powers up to 16 kW were used to rapidly heat samples to relatively low temperatures in a continuous belt-fed applicator. A significant enhancement of grindability was obtained with a minus 1.9-cm taconite rod mill feed. At a sample temperature of 130? C, the grindability was improved a maximum of 26.1 pct over the non-microwaved sample.

"Ruskin Dam, located near Mission, British Columbia, was constructed in 1929 and 1930 and comprises of a concrete gravity dam structure founded on bedrock. At the right abutment, which consists mostly of dense to very dense sands and silt, the dam abuts against overburden soils, and connects to a cutoff wall system consisting of sloping concrete slabs. Significant seepage and piping issues were encountered during first filling of the reservoir in 1930. In 2012, BC Hydro, the owner of the dam, awarded a contract for the construction of seepage control measures at the right abutment, including construction of a plastic concrete cut-off wall extending upstream of the dam, a plastic concrete seepage training wall extending downstream of the dam, tie-in of the new cutoff wall to the dam, consisting of jet grouting of the soils adjacent to the dam to allow for the construction of the special cutoff connecting the cutoff wall to the dam, and construction of additional jet-grouting ground improvement downstream of the dam.Integral to the upgrade was the requirement for the special tie-in cutoff wall, consisting of a highly flexible, impermeable membrane to connect the concrete dam to the new, 1 m thick plastic concrete cutoff wall. The tie-in extends vertically into bedrock through the dam and jet grout columns constructed adjacent and beneath the overhanging portion of the dam at the right abutment. The membrane is required to survive the anticipated earthquake induced deformation between the dam and the abutment soils.This paper describes the processes used to develop a material suitable to meet the specified flexibility and permeability criteria, as well as the innovative construction techniques utilized to construct the slot and place the bituminous material within it. The final dimensions of the slot were in the order of 7 m long by 25 m deep by 0.17 m wide. The bituminous material was placed under a head of water which was required to maintain stability of the slot, and was placed at temperatures in excess of 120 degrees Celsius."

The need for wartime supplies of uranium for the Manhattan Project prompted a 1944 study of uranium in South Africa. Uraninite had been reported by R.A. Cooper in 1923 in a Witwatersrand heavy- mineral concentrate, and the search for uranium, therefore, included the district's 30 operating mills. The method of investigation was simple: take bulk concentrate samples from the Wifley tables and determine their mineralogy. Samples were taken on a daily basis, although weekly composites also were taken of some mills. In 1944, most mills had simple gravity circuits and produced (I) a gravity concentrate, and (2) an all-slime [-75 pm (-200 mesh)] product. The tonnage throughput was known, and from that, head assays could be calculated. Concentrate samples were sent to the United States for chemical analyses. A Geiger counter set up in a Johannesburg hotel room provided preliminary data. The early data showed uraninite to be widespread. Microscopic, mineragraphic, and siezing tests were all under- taken in Johannesburg. Ultimately, tests led to a high grade (+90%) uraninite concentrate. Platinum and other heavies were the impurities. In seven months, the investigations had reached the stage where it was possible to forecast an annual production of 5.4 to 7.3 kt (6,000 to 8,000 st) of U3O8. The estimate is still realistic. In many parts of the country, electric utilities use spot market coal to make up the difference between the amount of contract coal and the total amount burned. The utilities involved will normally have a structured contract for those companies supplying that spot coal. These contracts will often involve a pricing schedule with bonuses or penalties for coal above or below the specified coal quality goals. Normally, penalties will be assessed on the sulfur, ash, and other coal quality variables. This paper deals with some aspects of the pricing schedule of one of the eastern utilities that buys coal on the spot market. This utility has a number of plants that a supplier can attempt to supply through bidding procedures. The existence of the pricing schedule gives the supplier a number of different options. To the single-mine producer, options are available to send the coal to any demand site and to clean all, part, or none of the coal. In other words, he can ship to a number of different sites and can send different coal qualities to each site depending upon the level of preparation. In addition, the options to deliver blended coal to any given site will provide an additional level of complexity to the problem.
