Large scale grinding mills can reduce both capital and operating costs for concentrators. These mills can be effectively used, but they must be free from design and manufacturing deficiencies if they are to reach their full potential and avoid costly downtime. This paper presents the evolution of today's complex grinding mill specifications and discusses the most important items to look for when buying new equipment. It emphasizes the need to monitor specification requirements during design and manufacture. It also discusses the growing trend to have grinding mills fabricated in overseas plants, and the importance of recognizing this when preparing specifications.

PREVIOUS investigations on the effect of stress changes on the high-temperature creep and fracture behavior of metals have been confined mainly to the testing of complex alloys.172 Most of these alloys are structurally unstable during creep because of such effects as recrystallization, overaging, and so forth, so that the results are of limited application. The only pure metals on which observations have been made appear to be lead3,4 and aluminum5 tested under conditions which allow rapid recovery to take place. The present work describes the effect of a single stress change on the creep and fracture properties of a metal in which recovery is very slow. A Ni 0.1 at. pct Pd alloy was used so that grain growth and recrystallization did not occur during creep testing. Specimens of this material were heat-treated to give a uniform grain size of 10 grains per mm. Creep tests were carried out at 500°C using Denison T.47 machines; details of the creep-testing procedure have been given elsewhere.' All specimens were tested at a constant initial stress of 5 tpsi which gives, in an uninterrupted test, a minimum creep rate of ~10-3 pct per rnin and a life of -7000 min. Specimens were loaded under these standard conditions and after 1500 min, when secondary creep was well-established, the stress was changed to either 8, 7, 6, 4, 2, or 0 tpsi for a period of 180 min. After this time the original load was reapplied and the tests continued to fracture. The results are shown in Fig. 1. No detectable creep occurred during the period of reduced load, even at 4 tpsi, and on reverting to 5 tpsi the creep rate returned to its original value immediately. Increasing the stress to 8, 7, or 6 tpsi resulted in an instantaneous extension followed by a period of transient creep leading to a new steady creep rate. On returning from these higher stresses, the resulting creep rate at 5 tpsi was very low compared with the original value. Furthermore, the higher the stress during the stress change, the lower was the final creep rate. It is significant that the rupture life is comparatively unaffected by any of these stress changes.

This report summarizes the principles of safely working steep coal seam using longwall mining methods. It presents the state-of-the-art and identifies the problems which result from seam inclination. Details are given on foreign longwall faces achieving good records of safety and productivity when mining on 30 degree and 50 degree inclined seams. Recommendations for further research are suggested.

Formulating a predictive model for blast-induced ground vibration (BIGV) has always been challenging due to the complex non-linear relationship between the BIGV and its influencing factors. Researchers have used empirical, artificial intelligence methods and numerical modelling methods to predict BIGV. In a dragline bench blasting, a massive quantity of explosives is used compared to other loading machinery, and the height of the bench depends on the size of the dragline. For effective utilization of explosives energy, decking is used to reduce the hazardous effects of blasting. In this paper, an attempt has been made for effective prediction of BIGV, and its mitigation on dragline bench blasting considering a deck length, stiffness ratio, hole spacing to burden ratio, hole depth to burden ratio, the distance of monitoring PPV from blasting site, Schmidt hammer rebound number of the bench to be blasted, and maximum charge per hole to total charge per blast. So artificial neural network (ANN) model and random forest (RF) model have been developed considering the parameters mentioned above. For the statistical performance of the predictive model, the coefficient of determination (R2) value is 0.8895, MSE is 22.84 for the ANN model, and the random forest (RF) model whose R2 is 0.8165 and MSE is 27.18. The sensitivity analysis results show that stiffness ratio, deck length, and Schmidt hammer rebound number are more influential parameters out of the selected parameters. The reduction of ground vibration with the introduction of decking led to a 3 to 15% reduction in ground vibration.

"AB5 type hydrogen storage alloys (A: rare earths, B: transition metals) are extensively applied to a negative electrode of a nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) rechargeable battery for portable electric equipments, electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles etc. Performance of a hydrogen storage alloy electrode is affected by various factors, microstructure and surface composition of the alloy and structure of the electrode as well as composition of the alloy. Control of those factors enables us to commercialize the Ni-MH battery in various field.IntroductionA Nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery has been extensively developed because of (1) good compatibility with a nickel cadmium (Ni-Cd) battery, (2) high energy density (1.5-2 times higher per unit volume than a Ni-Cd battery) and high dischargeability, and (3) low environmental pollution. The charge/ discharge reactions can be written as [l, 2,3]:(+) Ni(OH)2+OH- = NiOOH+H2O+e· (E=+0.490V NHE),(-) l/6LaNi5+H2O+e-· = 1/6LaNi5H6+OH- (E=-0.828V NHE),where E° is a standard potential of an electrode vs. normal hydrogen electrode (NHE). Because of the above advantages of a Ni-MH battery, the battery have been widely used as a power source of portable computers, cellular phones, electric vehicles (Toyota ""LAV4L EV"", Honda ""EV Plus"" etc.) etc. Some hybride vehicles (Toyota ""Prius"" and Honda ""INSIGHT"") and fuel cell vhehicles (Toyota ""FCEV"") are power-assisted by a high-power Ni-MH battery. In 1999, the production of Ni-MH batteries reached 870 million cells in Japan. Most of commercialized NiMH batteries are incorporated with rare-earth-based AB5-type hydrogen storage alloy as a negative_ electrode. The production of rare-earth-based alloy is estimated to be approximately 8000 tons.The battery performances of the Ni-MH battery, for example, capacity, durability (cycle life), dischargeability (kinetics) and selfdischarge, ate closely related to the metal hydride· (MH) electrode, especially, the hydrogen storage alloy in the electrode. Substitution of alloy components, heat treatment, and surface treatment in order to change surface and bulk structure of hydrogen storage alloys have been examined by us and many reseachers in order to improve the performances of MH electrodes. This paper is a review of our and their efforts to improve performances of MH electrodes."

p-n junctions to detect and measure the energy of single quanta of electromagnetic radiation are described. Useful energy range is from 1 kev to several Meu. Achieved energy resolution varies from 30 pct at 6 keu to 0.12 pct at 2 Mev. Parameters affecting the perfornzance of the present detectors and desired of a new material are discussed. DURING the last 6 years semiconductor detectors have been used extensively to detect and to measure the energy of charged particles. These detectors are made from reverse-biased p-n junctions. Electron-hole pairs are created in the depletion region of the junction, Fig. 1. The carriers are separated by the electric field and give rise to a pulse of current in the external circuit. This current pulse is proportional to the number of carriers and hence to the energy deposited in the depletion region by the ionizing event. More recently the discovery of the lithium drift process, first in silicon' and then in germanium,2 has extended the use of semiconductor detectors to the detection and the energy measurement of single quanta of electromagnetic radiation. These detectors now have a useful measurement range extending from the soft X-ray region, about 6 kev, to the hard y ray region of several Mev. Surface-contoured avalanche diodes can be used to extend this range down to 1 kev. There is however a desire for other materials suited to higher operating temperatures, and particularly for those materials with high y ray stopping power. The most important advantage of the semiconductor detector over gaseous and scintillation detectors is the average energy, E, required to form an electron-hole pair. Fig. 2 shows the quantum efficiency for germanium as a function of photon energy.3 At the band-gap energy, 0.7 ev, an electron-hole pair is generated by the absorption of the photon and the quantum efficiency is unity. The quantum efficiency remains constant at unity between 0.7 and 3 ev. It then increases as additional electron-hole pairs are formed by secondary ionization of the initial photoelectron. The rate of increase is about 1 electron-hole pair per 3 ev (actually 2.9 ev for germanium and 3.6 ev for silicon). This figure is constant irrespective of the particle type (electron, proton, a particle, heavy ion) and energy. In an ionizing event an incident particle of energy E will create N = E/e ion pairs. The distribution ratio of Pb (LPb s/m) between three types of slags (FeOx–SiO2, CaO–FeOx and FeOx– CaO–SiO2) and molten copper after equilibrium was measured at 1300°C and oxygen partial pressure (pO2) of 10-10–10-6 atm. Results showed that for FeOx–SiO2 slag, the LPb s/m increased from 0.024 to 2.57 with pO2 increased from 10-10 to 10-6 atm. The LPb s/m with CaO–FeOx slag was lower than the FeOx–SiO2 slag at the same pO2, ranging between 0.015 and 0.53. Using the FeOx–CaO– SiO2 slag generated LPb s/m values (0.02–1.6) in between. The oxygen partial pressure in the investigated range had no obvious effect on the activity coefficient of PbO (γPbO) which was averagely 0.44, 1.70 and 0.71 for FeOx–SiO2, CaO–FeOx and FeOx–CaO–SiO2 slags, respectively. The increases in the (CaO+MgO)/SiO2 mass ratio of the FeOx–CaO–SiO2 slag induced the decrease in the LPb s/m and the increase in the γPbO value. However, the variation in the Fe/SiO2 mass ratio didn’t exert obvious effects.

IN addition to the usual methods of manufacturing steel, a number of special processes have been the subject of considerable experimentation-and use in manufacturing practice. A number of these methods have been of a type in which a rapid refining action has been secured through the intimate mixture of fluid slag with fluid metal. The persistence with which more rapid methods are sought is indicated by the current interest in the Aston' method for producing wrought iron and in the Perrin2 process for dephosphorizing and deoxidizing steel. In the Perrin process, in particular, the mixing action is extremely vigorous and the reactions proceed with surprising speed.

The effects of hydrogen and vacuum shtering treatments on the physical and mechanical properties of arc plasma-sprayed tungsten were inuestigated. Temperatures examined ranged from 3000" to 4000°F in vacuum and 2000" to 3000°F in hydrogen for both single and duplex sintering cycles. Densities of 92 pct of theoretical density were obtained when a long-time hydrogen treatment at 2000°Fpreceded sintering in vacuum at 4000°F for 4 hr. This cycle also produced the highest ualues for modulus of rupture and bend angle. The results of this investigation point out the desirability of using a low-temperature long-time hydrogen treatment prior to a high-temperature vacuum sinter for arc plasma-sprayed tungsten. ADVANCES in the development of arc plasma-generating equipment have provided a high-temperature heat source that makes the fabrication of tungsten shapes possible by a metallizing process. Tungsten in the as-sprayed condition is very brittle. It has a density between 80 and 85 pct of theoretical density, a lamellar structure with elongated pores, and a high interstitial impurity content. To improve these properties, sintering treatments can be applied to the as-sprayed material, similar to those used for the densification of compacted tungsten powder. However, in view of the differences in the density and microstructure of as-sprayed tungsten as compared with compacted tungsten, responses to sintering were expected to be different. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The tungsten powder used in this investigation had a particle size varying from 3 to 13 p with an average diameter of 8p. The impurity level was less than 0.1 pct. The arc plasma spraying was done with an F-40 Thermal Dynamics Corp. plasma jet. Spraying was performed in air and thus required cooling of the substrate by an air blast in order to minimize oxidation. The spraying parameters employed in the fabrication of all specimens are listed below: Power input, kw 12 Arc-gas flow, cfh 95N2 + 5H2 Powder feed rate, g per min 33 Powder carrier gas flow, cfh ION, Spray distance, in. 3 Traverse rate, in. per min 30 Mandrel speed, rpm 100 Nozzle orifice, in. 7/32 These values of the spraying parameters correspond to optimum conditions ascertained in a previous study. Sintering was conducted at 3000°, 3500, and 4000°F in vacuum (< 0.1 Hg), and at 2000 and 3000°F in hydrogen. Duplex sintering treatments investigated are listed in Table I together with the designations that will be used for reference throughout this paper. The samples were fabricated by spraying onto a copper mandrel which was removed prior to sintering. The specimens used for the sintering analyses had the shape of small hollow truncated cones 1 in. high with an inside diameter varying from 0.500 to 0.125 in. and a wall thickness of 1/8 in. Specimens for bend testing were taken from hollow hexagonal prisms 1-1/2 in. high with a 1-in. diam across the flats and a wall thickness of 1/8 in. The bend-test specimens were ground to the dimensions 0.085 by 0.350 by 1-1/2 in. Prior to bend testing 0.0025 in. of stock was removed from each surface by electro-polishing. Density measurements were made by the water-displacement method. In addition, a porosimeter was used to determine the amount of interconnected porosity for representative samples. Strength and ductility were determined from recorded values in transverse bending using a cross head speed of 0.020 in. per min. The load was applied at the midpoint of a 1-in. span. The deflection data reported herein refer only to the plastic portion of the total deflection. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The as-sprayed samples had a density corresponding to 83 pct (l pct) of the theoretical density of tungsten. Fig. 1 shows a representative as-sprayed tungsten structure.

A spectrophotometric method for the determination of small amounts of copper in tungsten metal powder using the principle of solvent extraction has been developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines. The metallic sample is dissolved in hydrogen peroxide, tartaric acid added, the pH adjusted, and the excess peroxide destroyed by boiling. Copper is reduced to the cuprous state, and the reagent neocuproine (2,9-dimethy1-1,10-phenanthroline) is added to form a colored complex with the copper. This colored complex is then extracted into chloroform and the absorbance of the separated chloroform layer measured on a spectrophotometer. Copper contents as low as 1 p.p.m. (parts per million) can be determined. The method is limited to finely divided tungsten powder. The interest of the Bureau of Mines in developing more sensitive methods for the determination of trace impurities in high-purity tungsten prompted an investigation of the possibility of using solvent extraction-colorimetric methods. The organic reagents now commercially available make possible many extremely sensitive colorimetric methods for the determination of metallic ions. Extraction of the colored complex into a small volume of organic phase can be used to further increase sensitivity (4) .4/ This general approach has the added advantage that no special equipment beyond that normally found in an analytical laboratory is required.

Noise from vibrating screens is generated in two ways: 1) Noise due to the material being processed and, 2) noise from the screen itself. Non-metallic decks had been shown previously to reduce material noise. The noise reduction and change in screening performance was quantified for six non-metallic decks using dolomite, granite and coal as the materials. The non-metallic decks were from 2 to 7 dBA quieter and from -1 to +10 percent less efficient as compared to a steel wire cloth deck of the same open area. Damping of the sidewalls and isolation of the drive mechanisms had been shown, in a development configuration, to reduce the noise of the screen itself. Tests of four prototype damping treatments gave reductions up to 4.9 dBA and the mechanism isolators gave an additional 2.1 dBA. The treatments were successfully life tested in two ways: 1) Lab tests to a simulated 25,000 hours were conducted on samples of the treatments in a corrosive salt spray to simulate coal plant wash water and, 2) the full size treatments were run on a full size screen for 5,000 hours.

Eutectic freeze crystallisation is a novel separation technique that can be applied to treat brine solutions such as reverse osmosis retentates, which are often a mixture of different inorganic salts. The treatment of calcium sulphate-rich brine solutions through eutectic freeze crystallisation has resulted in gypsum scale formation on the walls of the crystallisers and ancillary equipment. In order to prevent gypsum scaling on equipment surfaces, it is essential to understand the mechanism of gypsum scaling on cold surfaces. This paper focused on the interaction between gypsum crystallisation in the bulk solution and scaling on the crystalliser walls in the presence of gypsum seeds. A cooled, U-shaped stainless-steel tube suspended in the saturated solution was employed as the scaling surface. Preliminary results showed that the scale layer was predominantly composed of needle-type and hexagonal prismatic crystals. The rate of scale deposition was highest during the first 24 hours, thereafter it decreased. A thin scale layer was observed to have coated the tube within the first hour of the experiment. Seeding, using reagent grade gypsum crystals, was effective in reducing scale layer formation through providing a surface for growth. The highest scale reduction, 81%, was realised at a seed loading of 0.50 g/L. At a high seed loading of 4.01 g/L, the seed material adhered to the tube. The Dittmer process for the debismuthising of lead by electrolysis beneath molten caustic soda has been scaled up to 100 kg lots for batchwise operation and to 20 kg per hour for a continuous flow of lead. Bismuth was decreas- ed from 0.03 to less than 0.005 wt. per cent for an electricity consumption of 220 kWh per ton of lead. Lower bismuth levels may be readily achieved if required.

Phosphogypsum (PG) is a by-product of solid waste produced by the phosphate chemical industry. Owing to large emissions and massive storage issues, it causes a potential threat to our environment. Hereby, a method based on the precipitation and crystallization properties of calcium phosphate-magnesium ammonium phosphate (CP-MAP) followed by its adsorption on active solid waste powder is used as the main principle to treat PG harmlessly. The treatment process and its influencing factors for orthogonal experiments along with the associated environmental safety have been studied in detail. The results showed that this method could simultaneously remove soluble phosphorus and soluble fluorine from PG. When ACP, FA, HBM, and Ur were added to PG at a dosage of 3%, 13.5%, 0.04%, and 0.04%, respectively, the residual phosphate and fluoride contents was 0.061 mg/L and 0.856 mg/L respectively in the PG leaching solution. Compared to state-of-the-art approaches, this method exhibited higher efficiency in removing phosphate and fluoride. Most importantly, this method does not cause any secondary pollution in the process, thereby showing a novel application in large-scale industrial treatment.

air-lift and equipped with tapered tubing of proper design, we would have a gas input consumption of about 2500 cu. ft. per bbl., which at 3 to 4c. per 1000 cu. ft. would be 7 1/2 to l0c, per bbl., and there would be very infrequent loss of production due to stoppages. It has been demonstrated that with efficient design of air-gas lift, the production of wells can be increased much beyond that obtained with the former type of air-lift employed; also that small wells can be operated by air-lift with tapered tubing at a cost that places this method in competition with beam pumps in many fields. The next step in conservation that the writer expects to have an opportunity to demonstrate is that of restoring the pressure in a pool and producing by air-gas lift all of the oil possible to lift economically. This combined operation is probably the method toward which we shall eventually be working in recovering the maximum quantity of oil from pools where the oil is recovered through bore holes. General Discussion on the Air-gas Lift H. P. Porter, Tulsa, 0kla.—The papers presented at this meeting contain a great amount of valuable information. Wonderful progress has been shown in the development of air and gas-lifts. There has been nearly everything brought out that touches upon the subject. The real point that is lacking is exact knowledge of the velocity with in the flow column which will produce the best effect—that is the thing we must know more about. Velocity in Gas-lift Flow In other lines of industry the matter of velocity of fluids in pipe lines has been well analyzed and there are known laws by which to calculate velocity of flow; for instance, in irrigation work large pumps are designed with intake pipos to employ an intake velocity of 4 ft. per scc. By reduced cross-sect&apos;ion the velocity is increased rapidly as it enters the pump and the discharge rate is at 12 ft. per src., which in turn is reduced in the discharge column to 4 ft. per sec. Crushed coal, grain and granular material is found to be best conveyed by air when a pneumatic conveyor is employed at 100 ft. per sec. As in the design of a pumping plant or a pneumatic conveyor, the velocity at the lower end of the column in the flowing well must be controlled within certain limits for best results. Mr. Griswold, I believe, stated that they had velocity as low as 15 it. per scc. and from that up to 78 ft. per sec. Mr. Pierce and Mr. Lewis showed an ideal flow column showing how the velocity increased as the fluid was carried up the column, hut did not give any figures as to the velocity. It would be well to take that sort of a diagram to establish an ideal velocity at the lower or intake end, and then calculate the velocity from expansion of the gas as it goes up. It may be that the, ideal intake velocity would vary, depending on the depth of the well, the quantity of liquid to be handled or the pressure which it may be desired to hold. The subject is one that might be worth much research.

In this paper the effect of natural ventilation pressures is considered a part of the mine resistance and it is shown that their effect on the mine resistance is not the same as the total natural ventilation pressure of the shafts if the mine has several levels. It is shown that increasing the fan pressure causes the division of the air to approach the condition that would obtain if there were no natural ventilation pressure present. It is shown that if an appreciable difference in pressure is maintained between the beginning and end of a group of splits, the value of the integrated effect of the natural ventilation pressures on the individual splits does not change substantially with moderate changes of this pressure. A method is outlined for determining the resistance factor of the mine and the value of the effect of natural ventilation with the fan operating; also a method for determining this factor when circulation is caused by natural ventilation alone. Natural Ventilation Pressure Natural ventilation pressure (N.V.P.) is caused by the difference in weight of the air in two similar columns between two horizontal planes, and the difference in weight is caused principally by the difference in temperature of the two columns. The fan pressure causes some variation in density, but, since it is usually small and affects both columns, its effect is relatively unimportant. It has been suggested that "N.V.P." be called "stack effect"; but, since the term N.V.P. was used in a previous Institute paper,&apos; applied in exactly the same manner, the term will be used. Frictional Resistance The frictional resistance to flow in a mine without natural ventilation may be expressed as RQ2 where R is a constant for a given air density and Q is the rate of flow. This frictional resistance plus the effect of velocity changes will be called the F pressure (F.P.) and a curve of F.P. against Q, the F characteristic of the mine. If a pressure is applied to a mine by a fan, the air flow so adjusts itself that the drop in pressure through any path from entrance to exit of mine, due to frictional resistances and velocity changes, is the same as that in any other path. The mine resistance varies as the square of the quantity. The air distribution without N.V.P. will be called "normal." Natural Ventilation Present When N.V.P. is irregularly distributed in a mine, it is more convenient in analysis to consider the N.V.P. as a part of the duct resistance. If it is so considered the resistance no longer varies as the square of the quantity, and if N.V.P. exists between levels the distribution of the air is no longer normal. The total N.V.P. of the mine is the pressure caused by the full length of the shafts. If a mine has several levels, N.V.P. exists

In 1936 the Institute established the Anthony F. Lucas Gold Medal, which will be awarded from time to time "for distinguished achievement in improving the technique and practice of finding and producing petroleum." These awards will be sponsored by the Petroleum Division. Captain Lucas was a pioneer in the oil industry, one of the early wildcatters and a leading mining and petroleum engineer. He was famous as the discoverer of Spindletop. He became a member of the Institute in 1895 and in 1913 was the first Chairman of the Petroleum and Gas Committee of the Institute, the forerunner of the present Petroleum Division. Production of advanced linepipe steels with strength levels of 685MPa (100ksi) and higher requires excellent control of runout table cooling to produce the desired final fine-grained microstructures, which may include acicular ferrite. Cooling is exerted on the runout table by applying water jets onto the hot surface of the strip and heat is removed from the steel by forced convective boiling. The associated boiling mechanisms are complex and include film, transition and nucleate boiling. A pilot-scale runout table test rig has been built to systematically study boiling heat transfer from a moving steel plate by employing industrial scale headers. Experiments were conducted using test plates moving at speeds between 0.3 m/s and 1.4 m/s. The plates were cooled down from 850°C to temperatures below saturation by a single water jet supplied through an industrial size circular nozzle. Based on these experiments heat fluxes were determined and further used to develop improved runout table cooling models.
