"This paper presents experiences gained from the construction of the Lake Mead Intake No. 3 project. The 4.7 km long tunnel was excavated with a hybrid TBM (able to operate in both closed and open mode). The tunnel crossed metamorphic and sedimentary rocks under a hydrostatic pressure of about 14 bar. During the excavation of the tunnel the TBM encountered difficult ground conditions caused by a combination of high water pressure, poor ground quality and locally low depth of cover. The adverse conditions required the TBM to be driven in closed mode at very high support pressures (10 – 15 bar) for approximately 60% of the tunnel length. The paper summarizes the main problems encountered during TBM excavation and analyzes the evolution of the TBM parameters over the entire tunnel length. INTRODUCTION The Lake Mead Intake No. 3 project is located approximately 30 km away from the city of Las Vegas in Nevada, USA. The project consists of the construction of a deeper third intake for the biggest reservoir in the United States, which is formed by the Hoover Dam. The construction of the new intake was required due to the constant drawdown of the lake level (more than 40 m in the past 20 years) and the consequent risk that the shallower intakes 1 & 2 may run dry. The project included the fabrication and positioning on the lake bottom of an intake riser, the excavation and lining of a 185 m deep shaft and construction of a 4.7 km long tunnel. One peculiarity of the project is that the water table is located about 140 m above the tunnel elevation (i.e. corresponding to a hydrostatic pressure of 14 bar at the current lake level). The tunnel was constructed using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) able to operate in both open and closed mode (Mc Donald & Burger, 2009). The present paper focuses on the TBM tunneling experience gained from the Lake Mead Intake No. 3 tunnel. The TBM excavation started on December 27, 2011 and finished on December 10, 2014 with the breakthrough to the intake structure at the bottom of Lake Mead. GEOLOGICAL CONDITIONS The assessment of the ground conditions encountered during construction was mainly based upon qualitative descriptions of the tunnel face conditions (during open mode operations) and analysis of the extracted muck (during closed mode operations)."

IN a Bolivian tin concentrator an appliance was needed to furnish a suitable product for fine jigging from a pulp of the following composition: Mesh Per Cent. +20 8.0 +40 36.5 +60 9.0 +80 10.5 +100 5.5 +150 4.51 -150 25.0 99.0 Loss 1.0 IN the jigging process, particles of cassiterite as small as 0.1 mm. can be recovered, provided they are not present in excess, that is if the material treated on the jigs contains sufficient coarser sands to keep the interstices between the grains open. Removing the fine material from the pulp by screening, to prepare the jig feed, is impractical, because that means the use of an 80-mesh screen or finer, and is not as effective as hydraulic classification. A screen would eliminate mineral grains from the feed which can be recovered by jigging, and in addition would throw more gangue and low-grade middling on to the jig. Formerly a one-spigot Richards vortex classifier had been used to accomplish this separation, but the tangential openings through which the hydraulic water enters became clogged by fine vegetal matter with which the water was contaminated, and which it was impossible to remove from the water. Consequently the work of the classifier was imperfect and a good deal of slime was sent to the jig. When designing the plant referred to in this paper it was decided to use a hydraulic classifier as shown in Fig. 1. Room-and-pillar mining is commonly employed for the extraction of rock salt in undergroundmines. Pillar stress is a major concern in these mines as it is directly related to stability and mineralrecovery. In this study a flat jack method was used to measure pillar stresses in three undergroundrock salt mines in Pakistan. The field work included determination of in-situ stress, in-situ elastic modulus, recording of field variables (pillar length and width, height and width of opening, opening width to height ratio, extraction ratio, and overburden height) and collection of salt block samples. The geomechanical properties of rock salt (uniaxial compressive strength, Young’s modulus, Brazilian tensile strength, and density) were also determined to estimate overburden stress, pillar strength, and factor of safety (both estimated and actual). It was found that the measured pillar stresses are proportional to the overburden stress values, with their magnitude ranging from 6.05 MPa to 11.97 Mpa, and the pillars were found to be stable. Regression analysis was performed to develop statistical models for in-situ stress and in-situ elastic modulus. Finally a quick guideline chart was developed to determine the suitable length of pillar for a given span and required level of safety.

The purpose of this discussion is to comment briefly on one of the points raised in the paper. The topic is that referred to in the Conclusion 2, in which the authors note a "disproportionate increase in mixing rate" as they proceed from a displacement performed at viscosity ratio 0.998 to one at 1.002. The recovery curve of this displacement, Fig.2A, shows a quite noticeable difference between the two runs in which displaced and displacing liquids were interchanged. This difference is ascribed by the authors to the change in viscosity ratio between the two experiments. This interpretation of the experimental results must certainly be based on rather precise measurements of the fluid viscosities or, at least, of the ratio of their viscosities. The ordinary Ostwald viscometer, employed in the usual way, is only just able to distinguish between liquids whose viscosities differ by two or three parts per thousand. The experimental refinements which then must have been necessary to measure with any precision a viscosity ratio of 1.002 would be worthy of mention. Indeed, one would have expected the authors to devote at least a paragraph to the display of this technique. For the same reason - to emphasize that the details of such unusually critical experimental work should be reported and discussed in the literature — I would have liked to see some comment by the authors on the requirements for temperature control during both the viscosity measurements and the displacement experiments. The temperature coefficient of viscosity of Soltrol C at room temperature has been measured in this laboratory at about - 1.9%/1°C. How much did the coefficients for the fluid mixtures used in the experiment differ from this and from each other Even if the two fluids were identical in this respect, it would appear that a temperature difference of .l°C between them in the flow system would produce a viscosity con- trast equal to that imposed by their composition. Reference to the experimental solutions of these problems would render Conclusion 2 more credible. Published theoretical work on the stability problem contains no indication of such extreme sensitivity to the viscosity ratio in the immediate neighborhood of unity. On the contrary, perturbation calculations such as those made by Chuoke1 and Perrine2 lead to initial finger growth rates proportional to the first power of the viscosity difference. The later instability growth calculated by Scheidegger,3 using the assumption of zero pressure gradient perpendicular to the average flow, is also simply proportional to the viscosity difference. The conflict regarding the sensitivity of the dependence of instability growth or mixing rate on the viscosity contrast needs explicit recognition in the literature. In particular, it would seem that the experimental work reported here should be supported by a more detailed description of the viscosity controls. Further discussion of possible alternative interpretations of the data would also be in order. For instance, is it possible that the unconsolidstted bead pack used changed its characteristics between the runs (due, perhaps, to the handling and inverting involved in the injection of the front) Or, are the data points of Fig. 2A averages from several runs performed in a series in which the two liquids alternated as displaced and displacing fluids? To summarize, it seems to me that the relationship asserted by Conclusion 2 in the paper needs the support of more detailed experimental evidence. REFERENCES 1. Chouke, R. "The kinetic study for the leaching of iron from cassiterite ore in KOH solution was studied. The effects of KOH concentration, particle size and reaction temperature on the leaching rate of iron were also examined. The results of leaching studies showed that the leaching of iron from cassiterite ore in KOH solution is significantly influenced by the reaction temperature, KOH concentration, and decrease in particle size. The study showed that 90.62% of iron ore was leached in 8M KOH solution at 80°C within 120 minutes. The experimental data were well evaluated using the shrinking model for surface chemical reaction and diffusion control through the product layer. The activation energies for the iron ore dissolution using the two models were calculated to be 32.06KJmor1 and 97.97 KJmor' respectively.IntroductionIn recent times, there has been increasing attention on the kinetic study of mineral dissolution. In most of these studies, the experimental results were analyzed with a suitable shrinking core model under the assumption that the ore is a homogeneous spherical solid phase [1-4]. A study of the dissolution kinetics of a Nigerian cassiterite ore by hydrochloric acid showed that increase in the hydrochloric acid concentration is accompanied with increase in the amount of cassiterite ore dissolved at various times [4]. The optimal concentration was found to be 4.0M HCl, after which there was a decline in the amount of the ore dissolved, which showed that the concentration of the reagent has a significant effect on the leaching rate of the ore. Also in studying the effect of stirring speed on the rate of cassiterite ore dissolution while keeping other conditions constant for 120 minutes, the result showed that the rate of cassiterite ore dissolution was dependent on the stirring speed over a range of 0 to 630 rpm. Above 360 rpm, the stirring speed no longer had any effect on the solid dissolution. The dissolution rates of cassiterite were analyzed using a suitable shrinking model. The results showed that the reaction was controlled by the diffusion of tin through the porous product layer, a reaction order with respect to hydrogen ion concentration of 0.92 M and activation energy of 50.05KJmor'. In another kinetic study on the leaching of a low grade niobium-tantalum ore with concentrated KOH solution the effect ofreaction temperature, KOH concentration, agitation speed, particle size and alkali-to-ore mass ratio on the dissolution rate of niobium were examined [5]. The result of niobium leaching from low grade niobium-tantalum ore with concentrated KOH, solution at different agitation speeds showed that the dissolution rate increased with increase in agitation rate. In the case of particle size effect, the results show that small particles require much shorter time for complete dissolution than the large ones."

He called on the Auditing Committee to give its report. Mr. Jack White reported that the Auditing Committee had properly checked the financial records of Mrs. Augusta Whiteside, Secretary-Treasurer, of this Institute and reports to the membership that these financial records are indeed accurate and in good order. We so sign our names to this. This Auditing Committee wishes to take this opportunity to commend and thank Mrs. Whiteside for her dedicated effort in keeping the financial records of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute in such excellent order. New elements have been inserted in NiTi lately, resulting in ternary alloys with specific characteristics beyond Shape Memory Effect and Superelasticity. Among all others alloying elements, the Ag additions itself gives potential antibacterial activity to that smart material. So on, the elaboration procedures of ternary NiTiAg alloys was studied in order to obtain a melting procedure to ensure further studies on this alloy. Microstructural and thermal analyses were used to evaluate the VAR-remelting production of NiTiAg with 4.0% wt silver content. The microstructure is composed by a NiTi matrix, pure Ag precipitates, and, scarcely, TiC inclusions. Heat treatments at high temperature could not dilute those Ag particles, but could lead to the precipitation of new ones. The silver element reduces the temperature of the martensitic transformation, yielding a material with superelastic behavior, beyond induces the R-phase on cooling stage of this alloy.

This work shows how pure silica was derived directly from rice husks ash (RHA) in different temperatures for reduction to Silicon (Si). The processes to form Si materials are usually complex, costly and energy-intensive. The silica in the ash undergoes structural transformations depending on the conditions of combustion. A high purity silica was produced at 650oC after burning the rice husk (RH) for up to 7 hours. The purity of the silica was determined by dissolving the RHA with alkali solution to form sodium silicate solution of pH 11.0. This was added to hydrochloric acid of pH 1.5 which lowered the pH of the solution to 4.0 to form silica gels. The silica gels produced were washed and dried to powder and then characterized using XRD and EDX techniques. This study was done to reduce energy waste and environmental pollution in Nigeria as silica is used to develop many materials.

"Cokes play an important role of spacer in blast furnace. However, they degenerate during Boudouard reaction. Blast furnace cokes are reacted with pure C02 at I 072 to 1673 K. Reaction rate was obtained by the weight change of spherical specimen. The specimen after reaction was examined by microscopic observation. The reaction rate increased with temperature and was expressed by two Arrhenius type lines. The activation energy was 126 KJ/mol at higher temperature than 13 73 K and 202 KJ/mol at lower temperature range. At the higher temperature range, the reaction proceeded from the surface leaving unreacted core, whereas homogeneously whole inside at lower temperature. The porosity increased from the center to surface at higher temperature, whereas it was almost constant at lower temperature.IntroductionThe cokes have the function of fuel, reductant and spacer to keep gas and liquid flow in the blast furnace. Thus, the reaction mechanism of coke with several gas and the strength after the reaction should be important factor to control the blast furnace operation. The reaction mechanism of coke with C02 has been studied extensively. The rate equations were derived by Gadsby[ I], Ergun[2] and Turkdogan and Vinters[3]. They were compared and discussed by Kobayashi and Omori [ 4]. Effect of crystallization degree on the reaction rate was examined by Kashiwaya and Ishii[5]. Catalytic enhancement effect of ash componets have been clarified by Kashiwaya et. al. [6]. Although degradation of coke in blast furnace has been examined recently[7], however, the degradation of coke after the reaction with C02 has not been well clarified yet. In the present work, the metallurgical coke specimen was heated in N2 and C02 and the reaction mechanism and degradation behavior after the reaction was investigated."

THE Huitzuco mines lie in north central Guerrero, Mexico; production has been about 90,000 flasks of quicksilver since 1873. Near-surface ores fill extinct mud geysers and the deep deposits are chambered veins, stock-works in brecciated blocks, and replacements in limestone. The epigenetic minerals livingstonite, stibnite and sulphur occur in limestone, gypsum and dolomite through a developed vertical range of 260 meters. The deepest workings expose an increased amount of stibnite, which probably indicates that the lower limit of mercury mineralization is being approached. A resurgence of heat and water formed geysers over an extended area after the period of mercury mineralization. Mud geysers, which are situated, in the outcrops, contain the secondary mercury minerals, cinnabar and barcenite in the gravel and mud filling the vents. A 150-ton flotation plant is in operation concentrating stope fills that assay 3.0 kg. of mercury per ton. In one open stope, which is more than one hectare in area and 60 m. high, 150,000 tons are available. INTRODUCTION The Huitzuco mercury mines are of interest because of the unusual occurrence of ore in extinct geyser vents and the presence of several rare mercury minerals. Some of the deposits have typical characteristics of the telethermal zone and there is a gradation towards typical epithermal mineralization in depth. Halse,1 Villarello,2 Mactear3 and Merrill4 have described the geology and the early operations in the district, and Barcena5 and Mallet6 have described the rare mercury minerals, livingstonite and barcenite, found at Huitzuco. LOCATION The village of Huitzuco lies in the north central part of the State of Guerrero, Mexico, 27 km. (16.7 miles) east of Iguala, which is the largest and most important town in the area. Iguala is served by the Mexican National Railways and also by the Mexico City-Acapulco highway. The highway is surfaced from Mexico City to Iguala, a distance of 200 km. (124 miles) by road, and there is a fairly good, level, dirt road from Iguala to Huitzuco. The elevation above sea level is about 1000 m. (3280 ft.). Introduction The need to develop accurate predictive hydraulic fracturing simulators arises from the consideration of vertical containment for the fracture. Fracture height growth from a pay zone into adjacent layers has been shown (see Cleary [I]) to depend on three sets of parameters for the different strata: - elastic properties, - closure stress variations, and, -fracturing fluid leak off, and poro-elastic stresses. Qualitative analysis of the effects of these parameters has been reported in the literature. The first effects were described by Van Eekelen, using simple elasticity considerations [2]. The effect of stress variations was described numerically by Simonson and a1. [3] and experimentally by Thiercelin [4]. Effects of back stresses induced by fluid invasion on fracture propagation were considered by Cleary [5]. In order to couple these effects, a numerical code al- lowing the simulation of three dimensional growth of a hydraulically induced fracture has been developed with the ability of representing the effects of heterogeneities on fracture lateral and vertical extension. The model is based on a new variational formulation of the boundary integral representation of three-dimensional elasticity. The fluid flow and elasticity equations are solved using a moving mesh representation which offers enough flexibility to enable the simulation of any closure stress distribution. Simpler models representing fracture height growth (P3DH models) have been developed [6] [7] that approximate the fracture by a series of one dimensional segments, and the limitation of such approaches is examined in this paper. 1 Description of the model 1.1 Fracture Geometry Hydraulic fracturing simulations involve the coupling of solutions to elastic deformations, fluid flow in the fracture, and fluid leak off into the formation. Since the use of direct solution techniques (i,e,,3D finite elements) is prohibitive, the method used in this study is baaed on a boundary integral representation of the 3D elasticity equations. 1.2 3D Models The classical representation of the problem of a fracture in an infinite medium by boundary integrals is [8]: [ ] where u is the unknown displacement field, r n is the traction operator, I? is the fracture surface, and K is the Kelvin tensor of fundamental solutions to the elasticity operator. Kaiser Resources Ltd. operates a coal mining complex in Southeastern British Columbia. A large surface mine, a conventional underground mine, and an innovative hydraulic underground mine are presently in operation. The products of these mines are fed to the Elkview plant. This coal has to be prepared to 9. 5% ash and 6'o total moisture for export from the port of Roberts Bank near Vancouver, British Columbia to Japan at a rate of 4. 5 Mltpy. The moisture requirement for the coal product was recently increased to 8. 0% total moisture. The entire operation has been described in various publications (1), (2), (3). Details of the venture will not be repeated in this paper. In this paper we hope to describe the modifications made to the original coal preparation plant in order to satisfy market requirements for quality and quantity of coal.

(written discussion ?).-There are several points in. connection with the manufacture of ferromanganese in the electric furnace which it seems to me. might prove of interest in this connection. Recent observation of a, number of electric furnaces varying considerably in size and transformer capacity, and all working under the same conditions, shows the small furnaces to be much more efficient in operation than the large furnaces. The furnaces examined were all of the same type. The crucibles consisted of tanks varying in size from 71-z by 15 ft. by 4 ft. deep, to 12 by 20 ft. by 9 ft. deep, with linings formed of carbon electrode butts. The smaller furnaces had transformer capacity rated at 1500 k.v.a.; the largest furnace had a transformer rated at 3000 k.v.a. All of the furnaces were operated on three-phase, 60-cycle current, the three electrodes being in a straight line. The voltages varied from 65 volts in the smaller to 100 volts in the larger furnaces. The charges consisted of manganese ore, coal, iron turnings, and limestone in proper proportions. The small furnaces, operating at low voltage, were making good recoveries. The slag loss was low and the volatilization loss almost nil. The larger furnaces, operating at higher voltages, showed increased loss of manganese in the slag and greatly increased volatilization loss when working on the same charges as the smaller furnaces, or on charges similarly calculated. The exact reasons for this state of affairs are difficult to state; a number of factors probably contribute to the results obtained in the large furnaces. First as to the effect of the higher voltage on manganese content of the slags. Increasing the voltage of the furnaces apparently tends to promote irregular working. The current takes the path of least resistance; this means superheating in certain areas in the crucible and insufficiently high temperatures in adjoining areas. The partially reduced manganese in the cooler areas passes into the slag and escapes further reduction.

INVESTIGATIONS on the above topic have recently been published by Shapiro and Kraussl and Jana and wayman in this journal and by Kessler and Pitsch.- Parts of the results in these papers are in good agreement with each other but there are also some results which are substantially different. The main points of these differences shall be briefly discussed in this communication. Shapiro and Krauss' measured single-surface traces of the habit planes of reversed austenite plates formed within the martensite crystals and deduced from these measurements two distinct habit planes A = (0.174; 0.309; 0.935) and B = (0.375; 0.545; 0.749) within 3 deg. Kessler and pitsch4 found instead by two-surface analysis7 one habit plane n = {0.23; 0.62: 0.75) with a real scatter of 6 deg. The latter observation of a single habit plane apart from a certain scatter is in agreement with most of the investigations of martensite transformations. The differences between these two results are so great that they cannot be explained by experimental error. The purpose of this communication is to show that the A- and B-poles of Shapiro and Krauss are due to an erroneous interpretation of a single-surface trace analysis. The difficulties in the interpretation of such single-surface trace analyses are due to the high symmetry of cubic lattices, from which it follows that there are in general twenty-four equivalent possibilities of plotting a single-surface trace in a pole figure. All these possibilities must be taken into account, when putting different traces from different plates together in order to construct the habit plane. Alternatively the poles of all the traces may be plotted in a unit triangle. This is done in Fig. 1 with twenty-nine traces of different reversed austenite plates, all of this were measured by Shapiro and Krauss in the same plane of a single martensite ther traces taken from Fig. 13 in the Shapiro and Krauss paper' which were determined by electron diffraction. The traces in Figs. 1 and 2 have to be compared with the habits A, B, and n which are under discussion. Therefore the great circles of the poles A, B, and n are plotted in Figs. 3, 4, and 5 together with a 3-deg scatter region for poles A, B and a 6-deg scatter region for pole n. Poly[(ethylene)-co-(vinylacetate)] (EVA) is a thermoplastic copolymer composed of randomly distributed polyethylene and polyvinyl acetate sequences within the molecular chain. EVA combines toughness with excellent flexibility, impact and puncture resistance. Because of these properties, this material is largely used for foam production as padding in equipment for various sports and as a shock absorber in sport’s shoes. This work aims to study the influence of clay reinforcement on the performance of recycled polymer foams. The blend containing recycled HDPE (high density polyethylene) and recycled EVA (70/30 wt%, respectively) reinforced with 2 wt%of clays were prepared by melt extrusion, using a twin-screw extruder to obtain the composites. The composites and foaming agent were fed into a special single screw extruder for foaming. The samples of HDPE/ EVA/Clay foams were characterized by tensile test, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), density measurement and the correlation between the results was evaluated.

INTRODUCTION Construction of tunnels in urban areas, especially reclaimed areas, pose many problems. The Red Hook Intercepting Sewer Tunnel, Contract 1A is a portion of the Red Hook Water Pollution Control Project located along the Brooklyn waterfront in New York City. This contract required the construction of a 2620 meter long (8600 L.F.), 3 meter (10-foot) diameter soft ground tunnel, eight Tunnel Manholes, nine Regulator structures, four Diversion and Tidegate structures and 765 meters (2500 L.F.) of branch intercepting sewers of diameters between .30 meters (12 inches) and 1.8 meters (72 inches). The construction contract bid price was $62 million with a duration of three years. The tunnel route crosses over five sets of operational twin cast iron subway tubes with clearances ranging from 4.3 meters (14 feet) to as small as 0.35 meters (14 inches). The route of the tunnel traverses historically interesting areas which have been reclaimed over the last 200 years. This paper is a case history describing the contractor's methods utilized to successfully advance the work through the above problem areas. Knowledge of radon emanation rates from uranium-bearing rocks is essential to the design of mine ventilation systems for uranium mines. Measurements of equilibrium ratio between radon and its daughters in mine air are important for a better control of mine radiation conditions. The concentrations of radon and daughters were monitored at cut-and-fill stopes in the Beaverlodge Mine of Eldorado Nuclear Ltd. during all phases of the mining cycle. The radon emanation rates of ore and rock samples were measured at the laboratory and the results were compared with in-situ emanation tests in an isolated ore drift. Samples of backfill solution, backfill drainage and ground seepage water were measured [or radon and analyzed for radium and uranium. The results showed that discharges of backfill solution and daily shift-end blasts were the two major sources for a rapid release of radon gas in the ventilation air. Other mining operations, such as drilling, mucking, etc., contributed little effect on radon release to the mining environment. Radon emanation rates of the Beaverlodge are samples ranged from 13 x 10-18 to 600 X 10-18 Ci/cm2/ sec and that of waste rock samples from 0.54 x 10-18 to 13.4 X 10-18 Ci/cm2/sec. The in-situ emanation rate of mine walls with ore-to-rock ratios of 1 to 7 was 60 x 10-18 Ci/cm2/sec. The average equilibrium ratio of radon and its daughters in stapes was 32.6%. Under a normal ventilation condition, the average background levels of radon concentration in cut-and-fill stopes ranged from 13 to 80 pCi/L. The discharges of backfill solution during backfill operations at 100 tons solids per hour released approximately 1.8 x 106 pCi/min of radon and elevated radon concentration in stapes 2 to 5 times above the background levels.

The Bureau of Mines has sponsored a comprehensive research program to enhance the safe, effective, and efficient use of blasting technology by the mining industry. Recent research results of the surface mine blasting program were presented at a seminar on April 25, 1987, in Chicago, IL. Many of the topics discussed at the seminar are presented in this proceedings. The new research described in these papers includes computer monitoring of rock motion, the influence of blast delay times on rock fragmentation, blasting effects on Appalachian water wells, blast vibration measurement near structures, and the reduction of accidents through improved blasting safety.
