An ilmenite ore from the Murray Basin was initially characterised using combined X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) techniques. XRF analysis showed the ilmenite sample contained 58.7 wt per cent TiO2 and 26.2 wt per cent Fe2O3. Major impurities included: Cr2O3 (4.5 wt per cent), Al2O3 (2.7 wt per cent), SiO2 (1.9 wt per cent), Mn3O4 (1.5 wt per cent) and MgO (1.1 wt per cent). Manganese and magnesium were present as solid solution components within the ilmenite lattice while the elevated Al2O3 and SiO2 levels were due to separate aluminosilicate gangue minerals. Chromium was associated with discrete chrome spinel gangue phases of variable composition, (Fe,Mg)(Cr,Al)2O4. Quantitative XRD analysis of the sample identified rutile (12 per cent), ilmenite (11 per cent), and pseudorutile (67 per cent) as the main titanium-containing phases and chrome-rich spinels (seven per cent) as the major impurity phase. Minor quartz, aluminosilicates, zircon and monazite were also present. The ilmenite was mixed with synthetic graphite, pressed into pellets and reduced carbothermally in nitrogen at 1200 and 1400°C with C/O molar ratio of 1.2. Titanium oxide in the ilmenite was converted to titanium oxycarbonitride. Iron oxides were reduced to metallic iron. The Changes of impurities as a result of reduction was examined by SEM and EPMA analyses. Iron and chromium oxides within Fe-rich chromite were reduced to form a Fe-Cr-C alloy. Mg-rich chrome spinels were partly reduced at 1200°C. Zircon particles were not reduced at 1200°C, but were significantly reduced at 1400°C, with the particles becoming porous and the silicon being removed.

A new solvent extraction process for the removal of halides from zinc sulphate solution was tested in pilot plants at both a 0.1-L/min scale and at a 3-L/min scale. Teck Cominco?s process is called the HalogonTM process, for which patents are pending. Mixer-settlers were used for the 0.1-L/min pilot scale and two BATEMAN pulsed columns for the higher rates. Pilot testing was performed with commercial zinc sulphate solutions containing variable amounts of chloride and fluoride. Sulphate extraction was also controlled and deleterious halides were loaded and stripped into a form suitable for disposal. The engineering aspects and economics of this solvent extraction process for halide removal are also reported.

These men we remember because they did not forget us; besides our pride in their wider work and fame, we are proud of what they did with and through us; especially do we rejoice if our early recognition of them opened the way to a recognition by the world; and in their departure we claim to sorrow, not merely as members of an appreciative public, but also as. bereaved personal friends. In common with thousands, we regret our loss, but we do not regret only-we mourn and miss. To this group of those whose death has brought to us the double sense. of public and private grief belonged our strong, bright, dear brother, in whose memory this inadequate tribute is offered. Charles Benjamin Dudley was born July 14, 1842, at Oxford, Chenango county, N. Y. He came on both sides of New England blood, his father being from New Hampshire and his mother from Connecticut. Emigrating from the rocky hills of their native States, they. settled upon the more fertile soil of what was then regarded as the West, and, with thousands of other pilgrim sons, imitating the pilgrim fathers, contributed to the foundation of new commonwealths. The Empire State owes much to this element of its population. Dudley's early education was obtained, like that of the sons of the pioneers generally, by attending the village school and academy in the autumn and winter, while he worked upon the farm during the rest of the year. But his ambition looked forward to a college-course; and this was almost within his reach when a passion still stronger took possession of him. The out-

BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc (BHPB) has been mining kimberlite from several pipes at the Ekati Diamond MineTM located 300 km north of Yellowknife since 1997. Processing of kimberlite produces coarse kimberlite rejects (CKR, 0.5 to 8 mm) and fine tailings (less than 0.5 mm). The CKR are trucked to the Coarse Kimberlite Reject Storage Area (CKRSA) located within the drainage area of the tailings impoundment (Long Lake Containment Facility û LLCF). The coarse rejects are wet when dumped and are expected to freeze as a result of annual average site temperatures of about -10¦C. Seasonal thawing occurs along the exposed edges of the pile. Monitoring of the CKR indicates they have consistently low sulfur concentrations (0.4 per cent) accompanied by high acid neutralisation potentials (78 to 337 kg CaCO3/t). Carbonate concentrations vary from 0.9 per cent to 3.4 per cent. The CKR are therefore not potentially acid generating based on conventional laboratory testing. Monitoring of stagnant pools on the tundra downgradient of the CKRSA has shown that water originating from the pile resembles acid rock drainage (ARD). Water pHs can be less than 4, and sulfate concentrations are typically in the thousands of milligrams per litre. Conventional flowing toe seeps are pH neutral but also have elevated sulfate concentrations. Investigations conducted in the summer of 2002 revealed no evidence of in situ acid generation. Pore water chemistry is probably controlled by oxidation of fine-grained pyrite, neutralisation of acidity by calcium and magnesium carbonates and silicates, and freeze concentration of pore water. The acidity observed in tundra pools downgradient of the CKRSA appears to be a result of leaching and mobilisation of iron under reducing conditions at the CKR-soil contact. Downstream of the CKRSA, reduced iron oxidises and is hydrolysed on contact with the atmosphere causing pH depression. BHPB is applying the findings of this study by constructing facilities containing kimberlite on granite pads. These in turn are placed on frozen ground so that the foundations remain frozen and limits contact of wastes with the acidic soils.

THE Petroleum Division opened its proceedings on Wednesday morning, with two simultaneous sessions on engineering and economics. The first paper at the engineering session, over which A. W. Ambrose presided, was "Underground Surveys of Oil Wells," by Alexander Anderson of Los Angeles, Calif., was presented by John Suman of the Humble Oil & Refining Co., Houston, Texas. Following this, the paper of E.'H. Griswold of the Mailand Oil Co., Houston, Texas, was presented by C. V. Millikan of the Amerada Petroleum Corp., Tulsa, Oklahoma. Following the presentation of these two interesting papers a general discussion followed on the subject of "Crooked Holes." The discussion was entered into by F. H. Studies of the transformation of aus-tenite at constant subcritical temperatures have been numerous since the work of Davenport and Rain.' Considerable information has been obtained on low-alloy steels and on high-carbon alloys containing undissolved carbide or graphite at the austenitizing temperature. Little is known of the isothermal transformation of aus-tenite containing in solution large amounts of both carbon and a single alloying element. In this investigation four steels containing one per cent carbon and with chromium in the range 3 to 9 per cent have been examined with the view to establishing the fundamental character of the isothermal reactions when all carbon and chromium are initially in solution in austenite. Experimental Procedure Alloys The chemical compositions of the steels investigated are given in Table I. The 4 per cent Cr alloy is a commercial steel. The other steels were made by the Carpenter Steel Co. as 50-lb., induction-furnace heats and rolled to 5/8 -in. round bars. Bars were softened at 650' to 700°C. before the specimens were cut. Most of the lines on the transformation diagrams presented here have been placed on the basis of the microscopic examinatioll of partially reacted specimens, Thees specimens were approximately 1/2 by 1/4 by 1/8 in. ill size, specimens of the 9 per cent cr steel were held 10 to 12 hr, at 1200°to 1225°C. before quenching to the various subcritical temperatures. The other steels were held for 2 to 2 1/2 hr. at 12ooOC. before quenching. These treatments, carried out in an atmosphere of purified nitrogen, produced an austenite grain size larger than A.S.T.M. So. I, some grains being 1 to 2 mm. in diameter. There were a few undissolved carbide particles in some specimens of the 9 per cent Cr steel. It is believed, however, that any errors in the results due to incomplete solution of carbon and chromium in austenite are negligible; that is, austenite compositions may be considered as being those listed ill Table I. "A personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler has been designed and evaluated in both laboratory and field settings. The sampler uses size selective sampling for the determination of the respirable mass concentrations of mineral dust and diesel exhaust particulate matter found in underground coal mines. This design is based on the premise that diesel exhaust particulate matter is predominantly less than 0.8 um while mineral dust is greater than 0.8 gm. Operating at a flow rate of 2 L/min, the sampler consists of a 10 mm Dorr-Oliver respirable dust cyclone followed by an 0.8 gm cutpoint impactor and an afterfilter. Field evaluations consisted of sampling at 6 different locations in these underground coal mines. Measured aerosol concentration less than and greater than 0.8 um have been compared with a well characterized cascade impactor.Techniques must be developed for measuring the mass concentration of diesel exhaust particulate matter found in underground coal mines due to the health concerns associated with worker exposure to diesel exhaust particulate matter. Diesel exhaust particles are in the respirable size range and have been regarded as a potential occupational carcinogen by NIOSH (1988). Furthermore, a 1988 MSHA advisory committee directed MSHA to develop a sampling protocol for assessing worker exposure to diesel exhaust particles.The University of Minnesota and the Bureau of Mines, over the past 4 years have measured the size distribution of diesel exhaust particles and mineral dust, both in the laboratory and underground mines (Cantrell, 1987; Cantrell et al., 1987; Cantrell and Rubow. 1988; Marple et al, 1986; Rubow et al., 1988: and Watts et al., 1989). To date, measurements have been made in nine coal mines. Seven mines utilized diesel-powered equipment at the mine face while two used electric-powered equipment. The results of these field tests indicate that mineral dust and diesel exhaust particles can be differentiated on the basis of particle size. The measured particle size distributions have been found to be bimodal with a saddle point at 0.8 um. This has led to the hypothesis that one method for measuring worker exposure to diesel exhaust particles would be to collect size fractionated particle samples separated at 0.8 um with the diesel particles being less than 0.8 um and the mineral dust particles greater than 0.8 um.Aerosol size distribution measurements, using a micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI), have been conducted in the mine intake air portal, intake entry to the working section, haulageway, and section return entry. The MOUDI is a ten stage cascade impactor with particle cutpoints ranging from 0.1 to 15 um aerodynamic diameter (Marple and Rubow. 1984b; Marple et al., 1989). The sampling flow rate is 30 L/min."

Pseudoclastic hydrothermal alteration textures occur within quenched coherent dykes forming part of a subaqueous dome complex (-4 Ma) on Ponza Island, Italy. These textures are similar to those observed in considerably older (-500 Ma) subaqueous volcanic rocks at a number of localities throughout the Mount Read Volcanics in Tasmania and elsewhere in ancient volcanic sequences of this type in Australia. This is significant because the processes of formation, hydrothermal alteration and secondary mineralisation of ancient volcanic sequences may be better understood if we can make comparisons with modern analogues. Observations at Ponza imply that these pseudoclastic alteration features form synvolcanically or immediately after dyke emplacement and lava extrusion. This is compatible with scenarios presented for their formation in ancient sequences in the Mount Read Volcanics, Tasmania.

IN a paper1 before this Institute in 1940, the writer reported that the surface orientation texture of zinc and cadmium differed from the texture existing within the casting, in that basal planes were parallel to the surface. He was unable to rationalize the origin of this surface texture. It is conceivable that the surface orientation texture is influenced by the atomic force fields, which are different at the surface and within the body of metal. It was considered that a radical change in the surface against which the metal is cast might alter the surface texture. In trial of this, zinc has been cast against a surface of molten lead, but the same result has been obtained-i.e., (001) parallel, ±20°, to the surface-as was obtained when it was cast against air, Transite or iron.1 Into the bottom of an open cast-iron tray, 7 by 14 in. by 2 in. deep, preheated to about 275°C., about ¼ in. of lead, then) ½ in. of zinc was poured, and the whole was covered with an electric heater to enforce freezing from the bottom upward. After a lapse of time sufficient for the zinc but not the lead to solidify, the zinc slab was raised free of the molten lead. The bottom surface of the zinc casting was coated with a thin layer of lead. A specimen of the slab 1 ½ in. square was metallographically polished to flatten it and remove the slight film of lead, and the orientation was determined by the method used before,1 with the result stated above. Some determinations have also been made on other metals, as follows: Surface orientation determinations were made on the 3/8-in. diameter grip section of two ¼ -in, diameter aluminum-alloy die-cast tensile bars and on a 1/8 by ½ -in. flat aluminum-alloy die-cast tensile bar. None of these three aluminum die castings exhibited any preferred orientation at-the surface. A brass die casting (nominal composition: 60 Cu, 37.75 Zn, 1.00 Sn, 1.00 Pb, 0.10 Al, 0.15 Si) furnished by C. S. Smith was also examined. The surface showed a random orientation of alpha and beta. SUMMARY A zinc casting solidified against a molten lead surface was found to have the same surface orientation texture, (001) parallel to the surface, as other zinc and cadmium castings. Aluminum and alpha-beta brass die castings were found to have random grain orientation textures at the surface. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The X-ray determinations were conduced by M. L. Fuller.

Real gross national produce (GNP) grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 2.0% in the fourth quarter (table 1). The restrained quarterly growth rate was the slowest in 2 years, and was substantially slower than the 2.5 % rate of the previous quarter. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the summer drought reduced the fourth-quarter growth rate by 1.1 percentage points. A growing trade deficit and a reduction in business investment were the key economic factors curtailing growth. The trade deficit widened by $6.8 billion, reflecting both a surge of imports and a slowing of exports. Business investment declined 3.7%, mainly as a result of a slowdown in computer sales. On a year-to-year basis, the economy grew at an inflation-adjusted rate of 3.8% for 1988, the fastest in 4 years, despite the drought. However, on a fourth-quarter-to-fourth-quarter basis, real growth measured 2.7%. Increased exports and business spending for plant and equipment accounted for much of the 1988 GNP growth. Employment continued to grow as the manufacturing sector added 414,000 new workers (table 2). Of these, the primary metals industry added 26,000 workers, and the clay, glass, and stone industry added 10,000. The civilian unemployment rate remained low throughout 1988, fluctuating between 5.3% and 5.4% during the last quarter.

The silicate slag and copper matte that are the byproducts of smelting copper in a reverberatory furnace contain SiO2, FeO, Fe3O4, CaO and Al2O3, and Cu, Fe and S, respectively. These components influence the oxide (Cuox), sulfide (Cusul) and total (Cutotal) copper content lost in the waste slag. This paper uses multiple linear regression analysis (MLRA) to determine the degree of influence. The results of calculations obtained using MLRA were compared to actual measured results and found to have a large degree of correspondence, with the coefficient of determination R2 = 0.975. These results indicate that slag composition and copper content in the matte influence the copper losses in the waste slag with a probability of above 97%. It was determined that, of the total copper content of the slag, 74% is in sulfide and 26% in oxide form, and that this ratio is not dependent on the slag or matte composition.

AN intrusive body is a mass of igneous rock that has migrated upward, presumably from great depths. Great variations in form, composition and depth of burial occur. It is not proposed in this paper to go into all of the details of the problem. Instead, it will be assumed here that the intrusive has the form and characteristics represented in Fig. I. According to W. H. Emmons,1 minerals are not deposited in appreciable quantities below the "dead line." Important amounts of ores of virtually all metals may be found around summit cupolas, but only gold, copper and zinc (in limited quantities) are usually associated with trough cupolas. Most students of ore deposits agree that temperature changes are largely instrumental in precipitating many ores in the "hood" and that the difference in temperature between the intrusive and that of the country rock may be the chief factor in determining the mineralogy of a deposit. A problem then of some interest is to correlate the principal physical features of the intrusive with the phenomena of heat conduction as evidenced by the cooling curves and the isothermal surfaces. MATHEMATICAL THEORY In order to show the possible application of heat conduction to the interpretation of the processes of metalliferous deposition associated with intrusives, it will be assumed that the intrusive is a large parallelopiped of dimensions, 2l, 2m, 2n. Lithium chemical plant extraction methods are discussed with reference to 1) base exchange with alkali sulphates; 2) processing based on roasting with lime; 3) miscellaneous methods; and 4) application of the Lithium Corp. process to extraction of lithium from run-of-mine, low grade spodumene ore, or concentrates. IN the early days of the lithium industry most of the production was from lepidolite, zinnwaldite, and amblygonite. Nearly all the early extraction processes described in the literature involve heating the finely ground mineral with sulphuric or hydrochloric acid. On subsequent water leaching most of the bases present in the mineral (especially aluminum) are dissolved as sulphates. As a result, the leach solution required extensive chemical purification before the lithium could be precipitated as carbonate. Following the remarkable growth of the lithium industry to its present size, zinnwaldite and amblygonite ores must be considered of minor importance only. Attention is now focused on spodumene, abundant enough in North America to be a major source of supply, and there are important supplies of lepidolite and petalite in Africa. The extraction processes described below all apply to spodumene, although several will also operate on other lithium minerals, such as petalite. Base Exchange with Alkali Sulphates: A distinct advance was made with the disclosures of Wadman and von Girsewalt. In these methods the finely ground silicate ore (spodumene or lepidolite) is intimately mixed with an excess of alkali sulphate (usually K2SO4) in at least a 1 to 1 proportion, and the mixture was heated to a relatively high temperature. Base exchange results, with the formation of lithium sulphate. A water leach dissolves the lithium sulphate, together with the excess potassium sulphate. Successful operation of this type of process requires very thorough grinding and mixing, as well as careful temperature control. The use of K2SO4 is objectionable from cost considerations since purification of lithium carbonate requires the use of potassium carbonate, if the K2SO4 is to be recovered and recycled. The lower solubility of K2SO4 as compared with Na2S04 is also objectionable, since it limits the concentration of the Li2SO4 solution to be precipitated by K2SO4. Early laboratory-scale investigation of this process by Lithium Corp. was not encouraging. Other related base exchange processes are those of Lindblad, Wallden, and Sivander3 and Sivander, Gard, Villestad, and Wallen4. The former covers the reaction of lithium silicate minerals with a sodium sulphate solution, at 100" to 300°C (under pressure), while the latter involves the extraction of silicate minerals with molten sodium sulphate. Both these processes would seem to be difficult and expensive to operate.

Bench-scale and continuous testing were performed to adapt the anionic process for flotation of calcium activated silica to the fine-grained hematitic-goethitic jaspers from the Marquette range, Michigan. These ores typically contain about 35 percent Fe and require grinding to about 80 to 100 percent minus 400 mesh to insure an adequate liberation of gangue from the iron oxides. A method for removal of troublesome slime fractions without excessive iron loss, by first dispersing the quartz and then selectively flocculating the iron oxides, was evolved in the laboratory and successfully accommodated to pilot plant practice. The efficiency of the flotation process was improved with respect to both reagent usage and concentrate grade and recovery by using the selective flocculation-desliming technique as a pretreatment. The benefits of the combined desliming-flotation procedure were most evident in pilot plant processing. The best tests on two ores yielded recoveries of about 84 percent in concentrates containing 65.1 percent Fe and 4.8 percent SiO2 and 66.2 percent Fe and 3.9 percent SiO2, respectively. These results are in comparison to recoveries about 10 percent lower than the above to concentrates containing 63.9 percent Fe and 6.6 percent SiO2 in the one instance, and 63.6 percent Fe and 7.2 percent SiO2 in the other, obtained by flotation without the prior desliming treatment.

INTRODUCTION LKAB was formed at the turn of the century when the railways between the ore fields and harbors were built. The mines are situated north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Kiirunavaara is the largest mine, with a pro¬duction capacity of approximately 30 Mt/a. Malm¬berget has a capacity of about 12 Mt/ a. Both are under¬ground mines. Svappavaara, the only opencast mine currently in operation, has a capacity of about 4.5 Mt/a. The ore harbors are at Narvik for the Kiruna and Svappavaara mines and at Lulea for the Malmberget mine (see Fig. 1). Production in the form of finished products is shown in Fig. 2a, b, c, and d. Due to poor ore markets in re¬cent years, production and shipments have been cut back, but there was a positive swing in 1978. LKAB has been 96% state-owned since 1957. In addition to the iron mines in northern Sweden, LKAB has subsidiaries in central Sweden which produce sulfide ores, quartz sand, and uranium (Fig. 3). The mining methods employed are opencast bench stoping at Svappavaara and sublevel caving at Kiirunavaara and Malmberget. GEOLOGY The Kiirunavaara ore body is 4000 m long and av¬erages about 90 m wide, with variations in width from a few meters to around 150 m. The ore has been ex¬plored by deep drilling down to about 1000 m, but mag¬netic measurements indicate a depth of at least 1500 m. The Kiirunavaara ore is oriented in a north-northeasterly direction with a number of ores in the boundaries be¬tween the wall rock types. The ore in Kiirunavaara is mainly a fine-grained magnetite with a varying content of fine-grained apatite. The apatite content of the ore decreases with increasing depth. The other ores are all apatite-bearing and a couple are hematite ores (Fig. 4a, b). The ores are sedimentary, tilted, and tectonically de¬formed. They have a lateral dip of 0.87 to 1.2 rad (50 to 70°). The contacts between ore and wall rock are distinct and sharp, but both the hanging wall and the footwall are brecciated and impregnated with magnetite. The footwall of the Kiirunavaara ore consists of syenite porphyry with a low quartz content and rela¬tively good strength; the hanging wall consists of quartz porphyry. Both types are known as Kiruna porphyries. The ore at the boundary with the hanging wall is often rich in kaolin. There are a few veins of syenite porphyry running through the ore, which has a few major faults (Fig. 4c, d). There are two sharply delineated ore grades in Kiirunavaara: low phosphorus ore with less than 0.1 % phosphorus (about one-third of the ore) and high phos¬phorus ore with greater than 0.5% phosphorus. The iron content is 67% in the low phosphorus ore and 60% in the high phosphorus ore. These ore types are sold as different grades and so are kept separate during mining. An albitization granite type tantalum-niobium ore from Jiangxi Province, China was taken as the research object in this paper. The main valuable minerals in this ore are tantalite-columbite and uranmicrolite, and the minerals that can be comprehensively recovered include cassiterite, sulfide minerals, topaz, zinnwaldite, and quartz-feldspar. Based on the research results of process mineralogy, the roughing process of gravity separation for coarse particles combined with flotation for fine particles is proposed. The combined cleaning process of flotation-gravity-magnetic-electric-hydrometallurgical separation is adopted for the rough concentrate of gravity separation while the combined cleaning process of gravity-flotation- hydrometallurgical separation is adopted for the rough concentrate of flotation. High intensity magnetic separation is used to separate and recover zinnwaldite and quartz-feldspar from gravity tailings. By mineral processing for the crude ore containing (TaNb)cassiterite concentrate is 0.0003% with a grade of Sn 63.22% and a recovery of Sn 47.42% while the yield of sulfide concentrate is 0.0783% with a grade of Pb 33.15% and Zn 27.09% which can be separated to get lead and zinc concentrate respectively. The yield of topaz concentrate is 0.1545% and the topaz mainly distributed in the size range of -0.4+0.074mm, which can be made into abrasive products of different particle sizes after classification. The yield of zinnwaldite concentrate is 16.91% with a grade of Liwhiteness of 75%, which is a glass-ceramic material of good quality. 2O5 0.0346%, Sn 0.04%, Pb 0.10% and Zn 0.33%, the tantalum-niobium concentrate with a yield of 0.00278%,a grade of (TaNb)2O5 53.61% and a recovery of (TaNb)2O5 44.49% is obtained. And the yield of 2O 1.34% and Rb2O 0.40%. The yield of quartz-feldspar concentrate is 30.42% with a grade of K2O+Na2O 8.98% and Fe2O3 0.11% and a natural All of tantalum, niobium, cassiterite, topaz, zinnwaldite, quartz, and feldspar are recovered effectively. Many mining companies, by their remoteness of location from source of power, have to generate their own power and must experience the same problem that had to be met when deciding to increase the capacity of the power station. At present the Company is treating approximately 54,000 tons of ore mined per month, and the present shift average load. is approximately 8,500 kW. at 0.8 power factor, generated at the power plant, the observed peak load being 10,500 kW.It is proposed to increase the tonnage of ore treated to include 36,000 tons of copper ore, in addition to the present 54,000 tons of lead ore. The average load is estimated to be approximately' 16,000 kW. with a peak load of 17,500 kW. The estimate provides for power of 1,000 kW. to be supplied to the north end leases in the next 12 months, also for increased ventilation in the mines.There are installed in the main power station three turbo alternator sets each of 5,000 kW.; normally two sets are run in parallel and one set is a standby unit.
