A bulk sample of oxidized taconite taken from the western Mesabi Range was evaluated by the Bureau of Mines using the Bureau-developed selective flocculation-desliming-cationic (or anionic) flotation process. The raw ore sample containing 32.3 pct Fe was treated by both cationic and anionic flotation. Using the cationic system the concentrates averaged. 37.2 wt-pct of the feed and contained 62.8 pct Fe and 4.7 pet Si02 with an iron recovery of 72.3 pet. With the anionic system, concentrates averaged 37.7 wt-pet of the feed and contained 63.0 pct Fe and 5.3 pct 8i02 with an iron recovery of 73.5 pct. A comparison of reagent costs showed that the cationic process cost 144.1 cents per long ton of crude ore and the anionic process 178.7 cents per long ton of crude ore. Reclaimed water comprised 86 pct of the total water requirement for anionic flotation and 88 pct for cationic flotation. The ore used in this study was one of three samples representing about 3.25 billion tons of oxidized taconite containing from 32 to 36 pct feed iron. Previous study had indicated that selective flocculation-desliming-cationic flotation would produce concentrates from the other two samples of 61.7 pct Fe and 5.1 pct Si02 at 67-pct Fe recovery, and 63.5 pct Fe and 4.3 pet Si02 at 8S-pct Fe recovery. By developing a successful treatment for these ores, the Bureau has insured the availability of technology for processing an amount of raw iron ore which, by itself, would supply U.S iron needs for 50 to 75 years at expected consumption rates.

DESPITE the zero weather of Monday, the morning meeting on nonferrous ore-reduction metallurgy got under way promptly under the efficient control of Arthur A. Center. The first and third portions of the paper on the Tri-State region were presented by B. M. O'Harra, with R. H. Lowe substituting for co-author Illidge on the second part. Attention was drawn to the compact design attainable when "Sink and Float" was employed as a means of primary concentration. The teaching profession should welcome this concise correlation of data from such a renowned center of lead and zinc production. H. R. Hanley and C. R. Hay¬ward were much interested in the mechanics of charging, manufacture, and life of the retorts.

In the sintering of iron ores, the partial substitution of anthracite coal for coke breeze has been considered to be an effective way of reducing emissions and improvement in sintering properties. In the present study, the combustion characteristics of the anthracite coal and coke breeze were investigated and its influence on product sinter quality and sinter flue gases is being monitored. Pot trials are carried out with different coke breeze ratios, 0%, 40%, 50%, 60%, and 100%. It is found that as the percentage of anthracite coal is increased from 0 to 100%, the sintering time decreased from 24 to 20 min, and the productivity increased from 2.25 to 2.60 t/h/m2. Up to 60% anthracite coal substitution Tumbler index (+ 6.3 mm%), Product yield (+ 5 mm%), and fines generation (− 5 mm%) is found 62.29%, 85.17%, and 15.33%; moreover, hematite ( Fe2O3), magnetite ( Fe3O4), calcium ferrite phases ( CaFe2O4, CaFe3O5), and Silico ferrite of calcium and aluminum (SFCA) are major mineral phases found during microstructural analysis of product sinter. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo mostrar os ganhos financeiros e produtivos do Laminador de Aços Longos da CSN através da otimização do plano de passes. Analisando a árvore de calibração identificamos a possibilidade de ganhos com a unificação de famílias de bitolas. No laminador temos duas famílias: Família Ø 5,5 mm (bitolas 5,5; 7,0; 9,0; 11,0; 14,30) e Família Ø6,3mm (bitolas 6,3; 8; 10; 12,5 e 16) para a fabricação destas bitolas utilizamos até 18 passes no laminador duo horizontal/vertical e mais ate 10 passes no laminador acabador cantilever. Após um estudo detalhado do plano de passes existente, verificou-se a possibilidade da eliminação e unificação de passes entre as duas famílias. Para corroborar as alterações propostas, decidiu-se utilizar um modelo matemático que representasse os passes e realizasse os cálculos para verificar as reduções e capacidades dos equipamentos visando minimizar os riscos e custos adicionais com modificações de ferramental. Após mais de 60 horas de simulações e testes, foi desenhado um novo plano de passes para a Laminação eliminando-se a necessidade de troca de 8 cadeiras, o que representa um aumento de 6 horas no tempo disponível para produção por mês e também a redução de 8 pares de cilindros de laminação, redução de guias e roletes, e tempo de preparação na oficina de cilindros. Só após verificação e aprovação desta etapa foram iniciados os testes no laminador que confirmaram os resultados obtidos nas simulações.

Although the diesel engine is normally considered a tried and proven power source, many new and exciting diesel design concepts are being evaluated in engine development laboratories around the world. Three such programs currently underway at Cummins Engine Company are discussed. The turbocompound engine converts into power exhaust heat energy which is normally wasted. It does this by incorporating after the turbocharger a low pressure gas turbine which is gear driven to the crankshaft. The adiabatic engine has no conventional cooling system. It converts into useful power most of the heat energy normally rejected to the coolant. The series boost turbocharged engine uses seperate low and high pressure turbochargers to increase engine output and improve transient performance. These design concepts make possible increases in diesel engine thermal efficiency from the current 33 to 38 per cent range to the 50 percent range.

A nitride, believed to be Si3N, has been separated from three nitrided silicon steels. Germanium nitride, Ge3N4, has been prepared from pure germanium. Comparison of the diffraction patterns indicates that the two nitrides are isomorphous; on orthorhombic structure is suggested in place of the rhombohedral structure previously reported for Ge3N4. THE possibility that a nitride of silicon may, under appropriate conditions, precipitate in silicon steels or in steels killed with silicon makes it desirable to have some positive means of identifying such a compound. One such means is the X-ray or electron diffraction pattern of the nitride. A review of the meager data in the literature indicates that the nitride most likely to form is Si3N4, a conclusion supported by the results of a study of nitrided silicon steels to be published shortly by L. S. Darken and R. P. Smith, of this Laboratory. Unfortunately, there is available no diffraction pattern for this nitride. Data have been reported, however, for Ge3N4 which, judging from the similarity between germanium and silicon, might be expected to be isomorphous with Si3N4. An effort was made, therefore, to form such a silicon nitride, to determine its composition and diffraction pattern and, if possible, its structure. To this end a series of three silicon steels was nitrided under controlled conditions with the resultant formation of nitride particles which yielded an electron diffraction pattern in situ. The particles were then extracted from the steel and an attempt was made to determine their chemical composition. X-ray and electron diffraction patterns were also obtained from the extracted particles, which indicate that the nitride is isomorphous with Ge3N4, although a complete determination of the structure has not been possible. These results show that a silicon nitride with a well-defined diffraction pattern can form in silicon steels, and they suggest that this nitride is Si3N4. Materials and Procedures The sillicon steels investigated were In the form of thin sheet or strip and had the composition shown in Table I. The 0.58 and 1.21 pct Si steels were nitrided by holding them at 1110°F in an H2-NH3 atmosphere containing 3 pct ammonia for 48 hr. The nitride particle size was increased by subsequent heating at 1500°F for 13 1/2 hr in helium. The resulting microstructure is shown in Fig. 1. The steel containing 3.20 pct Si was nitrided at 1200°F for 16 1/2 hr after which it was held in helium at 1500°F for 4 hr. Its structure as seen under the electron microscope is illustrated by Fig. 2. As would be expected from the higher silicon content and the shorter holding time at 1500 °F, the nitride particles are smaller and more numerous than those in the 1.21 pct Si steel. The ammonia-hydrogen treatment reduced the carbon content of the steels to a very low level, so no interference was encountered from carbon or carbides. In the case of the 3.2 pct Si steel, the carbon was reduced to 0.003 pct before nitriding by heating in dry hydrogen. Attempts to obtain an X-ray diffraction pattern from polished and etched surfaces of the 1.21 and the 3.20 pct Si steels were unsuccessful. However, an electron diffraction pattern was obtained from the surface of the steels. The interplanar spacings obtained from these patterns arc shown in Table 11, col. 5. The nitride particles were then extracted from all three steels by dissolving the ferrite matrix in bromine-methyl acetate, the solution used in the Beeghly method for the extraction of aluminum nitride from steel. X-ray diffraction patterns of these residues, obtained by means of a spectrometer and by a 57 mm Debye-Scherrer powder camera using filtered cobalt or chromium radiation, are given in Table II along with the pattern obtained by

The Outotec nickel matte chloride leaching process is especially suitable for small capacity standalone nickel refineries. The matte is leached with hydrochloric acid and oxygen in multiple steps in atmospheric OKTOP® reactors. Oxygen feed prevents reductive conditions and hydrogen formation in the leaching process. A sufficiently high acid concentration keeps the iron dissolved in the solution. The iron is removed after leaching by precipitation and the pregnant leach solution continues to metals recovery. The metals recovery from the chloride solution is done by solvent extractions, where ammonia is used for pH control. Copper and nickel are stripped from the organic phases into sulphate solutions. Metals can be recovered from the purified solution by conventional electrowinning. Other alternatives are precipitation or hydrogen reduction processes. The ammonium chloride in the solvent extraction raffinate is regenerated into ammonia. The calcium chloride solution from ammonia regeneration is routed to acid regeneration where sulphuric acid is added and ultra-pure gypsum is precipitated. A energia elétrica é uma das formas de energia mais utilizadas pela sociedade. Com a modernização dos meios de produção e o aumento populacional, a sua demanda cresce cada vez mais. Por este motivo, existe uma grande necessidade de fazer o transporte dessa energia de forma eficiente. O desenvolvimento de novos materiais para serem utilizados como cabos de transmissão e distribuição é de suma importância. O presente trabalho visa estudar a liga de alumínio Al-0,05%Cu-0,40%Fe-0,30%Si-0,22%Zr para transmissão de energia elétrica. A liga foi obtida por fundição direta em lingoteira metálica em formato de "U". As pernas correspondentes ao perfil foram seccionadas, usinadas e separadas em dois grupos, o primeiro sem tratamento térmico e o segundo com tratamento térmico. Após esta etapa os corpos de prova foram submetidas ao processo de laminação a frio para os diâmetros de [2,7; 3,0; 3,8 e 4,0] mm e encaminhados para a caracterização elétrica e mecânica. Verifica-se que o tratamento térmico de 150ºC/2h melhorou a condutividade elétrica para o diâmetro de 3,0 mm. Após a aplicação dos testes de termorresistividade para o diâmetro de 3,0 mm, constata-se que para ambas as orientações, tanto a liga sem quanto com tratamento térmico se enquadram como termorresistentes..

C. M. Bishop (Aircraft Div., A. V. Roe Cnnada Ltd., Toronto)—Reference is made to the coherency hardening of ß due to ß' and also to the hardening of ß due to a coherent precipitation of the a phase. What is meant by the term "ß'?" Would not the coherency hardening of ß during cooling be due to precipitation of a sub-microscopic dispersion of a, as is the case during reheating a ß-quenched alloy? I feel that these two phenomena are essentially the same mechanism, i.e., precipitation of a from unstable or supersaturated ß. From the text, it would appear that Tables III and IV are intended to show the effect of the martensite transformation on the properties of Ti-Mn alloys. Referring to Table 111, the ß-quenched alloys would contain a greater proportion of retained ß than would the equilibrated alloy. Could not the increase in properties be attributed to this, along with possible coherency hardening of the ß? In the same way, the structures referred to in Table IV contain ß from which they could derive their hardness. It would appear to be difficult, if not impossible, to assess the role of the martensite transformation from the data contained in these tables. F. C. Holden, H. R. Ogden, and R. I. Jaffee (authors' reply)—In reply to the first question raised by Mr. Bishop, the term "ß"' designates an apparent retained-p structure which is harder than it is after the most rapid cooling from the ß field. It is thought to be the result of a coherent precipitation of a. The mechanism by which hardening takes place is undoubtedly the same as that involved in the early stages of aging of a re-tained-p structure, and we are in agreement with Mr. Bishop on this point. The term "ß'" to designate the anomalously hard retained-ß structure was agreed upon at a symposium in 1953." The authors do not agree that the quantity of retained ß and/or ß' in the ß-quenched specimens of Table III is necessarily greater than that of the 600°C equilibrated specimens. The ß-quenched specimen has a structure which appears to be completely a' formed by the martensite reaction. It is recognized that there could be some retained ß (or ß') between the a plates if the M, temperature is below room temperature. This is unlikely for the 3.4 pct Mn alloy where the M, is known to be at about 640°C. Therefore, the increase in strength cannot be attributed to the presence of a greater quantity of coherency-hardened ß, but, rather, the increase in strength must be attributed to the transformation products formed, e.g., a' (martensiti-cally formed a). Concerning the data in Table IV, we agree that it is difficult to estimate the role of the martensite reaction, since the 6.4 pct Mn alloy was retained ß in the quenched condition.

Light weight aluminum alloys are the major construction materials for a number of structures in automobile and aerospace industries. Higher cost of production is the key impediment which restricts the usage of these alloys. A new electrochemical process route for the low cost production of aluminum alloys is being investigated, in which alloying elements are obtained from the dissolved compound. In the present investigation, solubility of lithium compound has been determined by measuring the EMF, when it is dissolved in the electrolyte. The solubility of Li2CO3 increased with temperature from 2.95 wt pct at 1063 K to 7.57 wt pct at 1093 K. Activities of the compound in the electrolyte were deduced using Temkin's ideal solution approach.

This paper discusses emulsion performance and characteristics. Also presented are pattern design equations by a weight strength method, a "Q" factor method, and a coupled energy powder factor (CEPF) method. Pattern expansion by replacing ANFO with emulsion is presented along with quality control checks for emulsion products. The predicted performance of the calculated burden and the equivalent powder factor as a function of the emulsion percentage, as determined by the three methods, is compared. Field results indicate that of the three methods the weight strength is the moot conservative, the "Q" is overly optimistic, and the CEPF more accurately predicts the effect of coupling and is more consistent with a variety of emulsion and heavy ANFO products.

In two recent papers stevens13,14 has compared the methods used by various investigators to calculate the contribution of grain boundary sliding to the total creep strain. In previous work Gittins15 has shown that the strain due to grain boundary sliding Egb may be estimated from the lateral, d, and vertical, v, displacements of a longitudinal marker line as it crosses a grain boundary. He obtained the formula, where nL is the number of grains per unit length measured on the specimens before creep, and \p and ?2 are, respectively, the angle between the grain boundary and the stress axis in the plane of the surface and normal to the surface (see Ref. 13, Fig. 1). The subscript L indicates that observations are made in a longitudinal direction parallel to the stress axis. It was generally found more convenient to measure the grain size of a specimen before creep; this was necessary to characterize the specimen. Stevens13,14 however prefers to define Egb in terms of NL, the number of grains per unit length after creep. Since nL - NL(l + €1) where cr is the total strain, Eq. 1 11 becomes The quantities d and ?, can be determined directly from the marker lines, while v and ?2 are found by sectioning normal to the surface. In the interior when symmetry considerations suggest that v = d and ?1 - ?2 the strain due to grain boundary sliding may be estimated from a suitable internal longitudinal marker line by the equation To determine cgb at the surface using either Eqs. |1| or [2] requires a large number of observations, particularly if many estimates of cgb are required, and also it is impossible to determine the variation of cgh with creep strain on the same specimen because the specimen must be sectioned to determine ?2. Gittins15 found that for a number of materials the sliding vectors d and v were related to each other so that provided one was measured the other could be estimated. Also during creep, grain boundaries tend to migrate to meet the surface at angles close to 90 deg,16 so that the term nL(v/tan?2)L was comparatively small when 4,- 90 deg. By determining the frequency distributions of ?2 on control specimens this term can be estimated without sectioning the creep specimen. In this way an empirical equation based on Eqs. |1| and |2| enables cgb to be determined with reasonable accuracy with fewer observations of the angles and sliding components. For B brass, the relationship between the sliding vectors indicated that ceb = 0.85nLVL . In Table I of Stevens paper this equation is stated to be incorrectly derived. However it should be pointed out that this is an empirical equation derived from Eq. |1|, based on a knowledge of the relationship between d and v and on the frequency distributions of ?1 and ?2 for a particular material under given experimental conditions. It was used only when these relationships were known, to reduce the number of observations required to estimate cb. Therefore the comment "derivation incorrect does not apply. Gittins did in fact make use of Eqs. |1| and 131. Author's Reply I must apologize to Dr. Gittins for the inadvertent misrepresentation of his work. Other slight errors in Table I have been pointed out to me. Langdon (No. 12 Table I), Gifkins (No. 7, Table I), and possibly other workers did not measure the number of boundaries per unit length after creep (A') but the corresponding quantity bejove creep (n). As Dr. Gittins points out, a completely analogous set of equations to those given in the paper can be derived by the same method: using the number of boundaries per unit length before instead of after creep. Stream sediment geochemical analyses from 140 mining company exploration surveys of the Coromandel, Northwest Nelson, Marlborough and Westland regions of New Zealand have been compiled from open file reports and entered on a database called REGCHEM (for Regional Exploration GeoCHEMistry). REGCHEM is supported by GEOEXPL, a custom-written computer software application which operates under the Microsoft Access relational database mangement system on a PC-type computer. The data are plotted as maps using the Maplnfo geographic information system (GIS) package. Thesholds separating anomolous values from background values are determined using the PROBPLOT univariant statistical package, which enables the descrimination and modelling of several populations. Relevant REGCHEM data are being incorporated into a GIS for the Coromandel region as part of ongoing studies to sevelop mineral deposit and metallogenic models for the region, and to assess regional prospectivity.]

Manganese alloys are important raw materials for steelmaking. However, selective mining of high-grade manganese ore resources has resulted in a scarcity of these high-grade Mn ores (Mn: >42; Mn/Fe: >5). The present research work is carried out to explore a new smelting reduction process to produce high-Mn/Fe syntheticMn ore from low-grade ferruginous manganese ores. Representative samples of low-grade ores (Mn: 25–30%; Mn/Fe: ~1) were collected and smelting reduction studies were carried out using variable smelting power (20–30 kWh), carbon rate (10–20% of ore) and slag basicity (0.1–0.3) to produce high-MnO slag and manganese pig iron. Studies have shown that different-grade high-MnO slags (MnO: 38.57–58.24%; Mn/Fe: >15) and manganese pigs (Mn: 5.16–24%) can be produced at optimum process conditions. The high-MnO slag can be used as synthetic ore for the ferroalloy production process. The developed process is capable to effectively segregate the iron and manganese in the metal and slag, respectively. The optimum Mn and Fe separation (>95%) was achieved by smelting of 10 kg Mn ore batch in a 50-kVA electric arc furnace using 30 kWh smelting power and 0.16 kg of coke. The slag basicity was maintained at 0.3 and the optimum slag SiO2 was ~30%. The studies indicated that the upgrading of low-grade ferruginous manganese ores is a promising solution for achieving high-Mn/Fe-ratio synthetic ores for ferroalloy production. It can help the manganese alloy industry to overcome challenges associated with the scarcity of high-Mn/Fe-ratio Mn ores and efficient utilization of low-grade resources.

"Since 2005, longwall coal mine operators in Pennsylvania (US) have been required to collect extensive hydrologic and biological data to document pre- and post-mining conditions of aquatic resources (streams and wetlands) overlying the subsidence control plan areas. Continued operation of the longwall mine is dependent upon empirical data demonstrating that the undermined aquatic resources have either been maintained or restored to an accepted range of pre-mining conditions. This study used quantitative hydrologic methods and comparative biological metrics to examine response of aquatic resources to longwall subsidence at the Bailey Mine located in Greene County, Pennsylvania. This study analyzed data from over 25 miles of streams and over 8 acres of wetlands that traverse the 4,779-acre study area. Hydrologic analysis of flow intermittency suggested that there are variable degrees of change to headwater streams immediately following mining; however, the majority of the effects are reversible through streamflow mitigation measures. Furthermore, the post-mining discharge from streams can be restored to within the range of pre-mining conditions the majority of the time. Biological assessments showed that greater than 95% of assessed stream length has maintained its ability to support benthic macroinvertebrate communities following mining and intervention (i.e., mitigation). Comparative metrics of the benthic macroinvertebrate communities showed that the biological community in 48 of the 50 sample sites is being maintained or restored across both high- and low-gradient streams. The effectiveness of intervention was further substantiated by the similarity in recovery times between streams having no intervention (median = 2.1 years, 95th percentile = 4.9 years) and streams with intervention, when recovery times were measured from the date of the intervention (median = 1.7 years, 95th percentile = 4.7 years). Changes to individual wetlands were observed between the pre- and post-mining assessments, but cumulatively a net gain of 7% in wetland acreage was realized. Hydrologic assessments were used to infer whether there was a potential that streams had been affected by mining; however, the ultimate test of stream recovery is based on biological metrics that establish the relative quality of the biological communities following mining. The spatial distribution of the deformation modulii around the CSM/ONWI test facility was determined using an NX version of the CSM cell. Approximately 840 modulus measurements were made in six rings (each ring containing seven holes each 6 m in length) of boreholes. These parallel rings were spaced at 2.4 m intervals along the room. Contour plots of the modulii revealed that the depth of the blast damage zone varied both with perimeter position and distance away from the opening. The maximum depth of disturbance appeared to be of the order of 60 cm. At locations removed from the opening, the variability in modulus was quite high reflecting the presence of joints, faults, shear zones and foliation. A comparison of rock mass modulii (ER) with those obtained from the laboratory testing of core (E), revealed that ER [=] 0.5 E.

It indicated that the sorption kinetics behavior of zeolite?s sorption on Cs+ is ac-cord with pseudo-secondary velocity equation, velocity constant k2=0.0005213 g?mg min-1, and equilibrium adsorptive capacity is 147.0588 mg?g-1; The equation can be expressed as: Y=0.0068X+0.0887; From the analyzing of diffusion coefficients on different temperatures and times, the coefficient of diffusion is not only related with the fabric of mineral and the character of ions but also the temperature and time; When the ambient temperature hoisted, the diffusion velocity augmented rapidly; Cs+ would get over a certain energy barrier when it enters into structure of zeo-lite; This energy is expressed by activation energy, and its value is E=131.668818 kJ?mol-1; There are two dominating adsorption mechanisms in the system of zeolite absorb Cs+: ionic interchange and surface coordinate adsorption.
