"The study focuses on the reduction mechanisms of copper, cobalt and iron during carbothermic reduction of copper-cobalt mineral sulphide concentrates in the presence of lime, in the temperature range of 1073K and 1273K. We have used three types of mineral concentrates which were derived from froth flotation from the Copperbelt region in Zambia. The reduction mechanisms were studied using thermogravimetric analysis in which selected reactions were stopped at different times for characterising the reaction mechanism using optical microscopy, XRD and SEM-EDX analyses. Using SEM-EDX analysis, we have analysed in details the stages of metallic phase formation during reduction process. Metallic cobalt and iron were embedded into copper, thereby permitting magnetic separation of the reduced metals even though copper is diamagnetic. Methods of preferential reduction of metal values were investigated by analysing the metallic phase formation.IntroductionIn conventional smelting or converting of copper sulphide minerals, metallic copper forms by giving off S02 gas on. Although in terms of overall energy balance the selective oxidation for metal production has major advantages, the process suffers from drawbacks in smelting complex concentrates containing copper, cobalt and iron sulphides minerals and these are: (i) cobalt and iron are oxidised, and consequently cobalt is lost into the slag phase. (ii) The volume of S02 gas produced is in low concentrations, which is insufficient for extracting sulphur or manufacturing sulphuric acid. The release of dilute S02 causes serious environmental pollution. The major cause for the loss of cobalt and iron into the slag, is due to that fact that the oxides of these metals are more stable than their sulphides. Since cobalt and copper are more valuable than iron, reducing conditions are required in a separate slag treatment reactor using electric arc melting for recovering the lost metal oxides from slag. This energy-intensive step makes metal making expensive.During chemical beneficiation of mineral sulphides (Cu2S, CoS, FeS) in the presence oflime (CaO), two types of equilibrium conditions may be set up either by forming CaS under reducing conditions, or by stabilizing CaS04 under oxidising conditions [l]. By comparison in the presence of carbon, CaS and metallic phases form, enabling the recovery of metals from sulphide minerals, which have been investigated by a number of authors [2-9]. During reduction of metal sulphide in the presence of lime and with carbon, it has been proven that the overall reaction le proceeds via two main steps: [5, 8, 9] (i) the anion exchange reaction between metal sulphides (MS) and CaO as shown in equation la, followed by (ii) the reduction of metal oxide (MO) via reaction lb."

"The recovery of base metal sulfides has been emphasized in the study of the flotation of platinum group minerals (PGMs). However, in some ore bodies such as the Platreef of the Bushveld Complex, sulfide minerals do not make up the majority of the more significant PGM mineralization. It is therefore important to develop a fundamental understanding of how non-sulfide and sulfide PGMs respond respectively to the current reagents being used in the flotation of these minerals. The interactions between platinum and palladium sulfides and tellurides with the thiol collectors, ethyl xanthate and diethyl dithiophosphate, have been studied using the electrochemical techniques of mineral rest potential and voltammetry measurements. The differences in the interaction between the two types of minerals with these reagents were of key interest. Rest potential measurements indicated stronger electrochemical interactions of the minerals with ethyl xanthate than diethyl dithiophosphate. These measurements also indicated that there are different forms of oxidized collector present on the mineral surfaces after interaction with ethyl xanthates. Voltammetry measurements support these observations and suggest differences of adsorption on Pt and Pd sulfides than on Pt and Pd tellurides. Voltammetry also showed that there was minimal electrochemical interaction between the Pt and Pd minerals and diethyl dithiophosphate."

The Department of Interior, U.S. Bureau of Mines performs the task of estimating the quantity of coal reserves existing in each state on a county by county basis. As a part of Information Circular 8655, the Bureau of Mines established the criteria for the uniform estimations of coal reserves and listed the most recent estimates of coal reserves by county and by seam. At the same time however, the Bureau recognized that these figures represented the upper bound with regard to the estimated actually usable or obtainable reserves. Recovery of these reserves are subject to the mining methods used and to the resolution of such problems as the use of poor quality coal and competition provided by conflicting land use. These problems, in practice restrict the recovery of the estimated quantities of coal reserves listed in IC 8655. Another impact, the subject of this manual, is the impact resulting from previous mining activities. In particular, many of the reserve seams included in the reserve estimates overlie or underlie mined-out coal beds. Portions of these reserve seams may therefore be unmineable or at best may have a reduced quantity of extractable coal. In order to improve the accuracy of the coal reserve base estimates, the Bureau of Mines funded an effort1 to develop a systematic methodology for estimating the coal loss associated with the impact of previous mining activity. The coal loss calculation model (CLCM) described in this manual is a result of that effort and addresses the percentage of coal loss in reserve seams due to previous overmining or undermining.

O objetivo desse trabalho consiste no estudo do grau de sensitização do aço UNS S31803 envelhecido a 700ºC por ensaios de reativação potenciodinâmica de duplo loop (DL-EPR). Para isso corpos de prova do aço em estudo foram solubilizados a 1175ºC e envelhecidos a 700ºC em tempos entre 10 min e 360 h. Corpos de prova metalográficos foram utilizados para caracterização microestrutural que foi realizada por meio de técnicas de estereologia quantitativa a partir de imagens de elétrons retroespalhados e análises magnéticas usando o ferritoscópio. Os ensaios DL-EPR foram conduzidos em solução 2M H2SO4 + 0,5M NaCl + 0,01M KSCN à 30ºC em amostras polidas. Observou-se que o comportamento eletroquímico do aço UNS S31803 possui forte influência da microestrutura, já que o grau de sensitização (GS) aumenta com o aumento do tempo de envelhecimento, devido à formação de fases intermetálicas que empobrecem as regiões adjacentes em Cr e Mo.

This paper describes how to make advanced control choices when difficult processes need improvement. The decision-making process involves choosing between a rules-based approach and a model-based approach as well as weighing benefits and drawbacks, complexity and simplicity, investment and results. This paper will present briefly each solution: basic control, advanced regulatory control, model predictive control and expert systems such as fuzzy logic controllers and neural networks. Three examples are presented: ARC (Advanced Regulatory Control) on pH in a comminution circuit, MPC (Model Predictive Control) for combustible management and FLC (Fuzzy Logic Control) on a Semi Autogenous Mill. The article then proposes a decision tree for selecting the most appropriate approach. A table will compare usage, development, commissioning, maintenance and lifecycle costs for each approach. Finally, conclusions and suggestions will summarize the methodology.

The Island of Ceylon, which is one of the most beautiful possessions of the British Empire, has been an abode of man from the very earliest times. The Veddhas, a wild tribe of some 4500 people still living in the fastnesses of the jungle in east central portion of the island, are believed to represent a remnant of the oldest inhabitants of which we have any actual knowledge, but in the caves in which they live there are found the stone axes and other implements of Palaeolithic people who represent the first race of men who inhabited our globe, and of whom they may be, for all that is known, the direct descendants. About the fifth century before Christ there came the Aryan invaders, apparently from the north of India, who drove the Veddhas into the remote fastnesses of the jungle and developed the remarkable Singhalese civilization whose high character is demonstrated by the remarkable and very extensive system of irrigation works which they built up, and through which they made the island wonderfully productive. Great cities arose, some of which are believed to have had a population of over a million souls and whose temples and public buildings show that the people were accomplished architects and sculptors.

The rapid growth of the metallurgical, chemical, and allied industries on the Pacific coast just prior to and during the war caused a sudden increase in the demand for refractories, which was the immediate cause of a revival in interest in refractory clays available on the Pacific coast, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. Population increases and shortage of shipping facilities caused an increase in the amount of various ceramic materials and products used and produced on the Pacific coast, with accompanying demand for information regarding sources of clay. In an effort to supply part of this information, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the College of Mines, University of Washington, started a program in 1944 to test the refractory and other properties of clays from seven Pacific Northwest deposits that had been drilled and sampled as part of the Bureau of Mines alumina from clay investigation. Figure 1 shows the location of these deposits.

"INTRODUCTION The Cranberry magnetite deposits occur in pre-Cambrian granite-gneiss in a belt extending from 3 miles southeast of Cranberry, N. C., to about 6 miles southwest of Magnetic City, Tenn. The belt forms a curve, elongated to the north, approximately 26 miles in length.The Bureau of Mines investigation has been confined to the eastern part of the belt, comprising the area from Fork Mountain, Avery County, N. C., to the Hcupscup Knob prospects in Carter County, Tenn.The deposits were worked at least as early as 1820. The Cranberry Iron & Coal Co. and its successors operated the Cranberry mine intermittently for about 50 years until 1930, when operations were abandoned.The magnetite rock is amenable to concentration. Numerous laboratory tests and pilot-mill operations have proved that a high-iron, and low-phosphorus concentrate can be obtained by fine grinding and magnetic, separation, the quality of the concentrate depending upon the extent of grinding. The principal objectives of the Cranberry project were threefold.The primary consideration for beginning exploration of the deposits was the need for developing additional deposits of high-grade iron ore during the war and for replenishing the war's depletion of iron-ore reserves for the peacetime economy. The emergency did not permit logical sequence bf development, and it was necessary to begin drilling before the geophysical survey was completed. The first drilling was begun at the Cranberry mine; and the holes were located from the geological data, coordinated with the position of the mine workings."

"Non-contact eddy current sensing methods have been developed and applied to Cd0.955Zn0.045Te crystal growth to obtain a better understanding of the melt, solid nucleation, and the growth process. The application of this sensor approach relies on a large difference in liquid and solid electrical conductivities near the melting point and requires knowledge of the relationships between the electrical conductivity, melt composition, and temperature. Using a multifrequency encircling eddy current sensor, the electrical conductivities of three different Cd1-xZnxTe (x=0.00, 0.045, and 0.08) alloys were measured as a function of temperature in a laboratory-scale vertical Bridgman furnace. The measured solid and liquid electrical conductivities were then used in electromagnetic finite element models to analyze the multifrequency responses of eddy current sensor designs during the simulated growth of a crystal. These eddy current sensors were fabricated and installed in a vertical Bridgman furnace and used to monitor many Cd0.955Zn0.045 Te growth runs. One sensor was placed in the vicinity of the ampoule tip to detect undercooling/spontaneous nucleation and two other sensors (""absolute"" and ""differential"" designs) placed to monitor the movement/curvature of the liquid-solid interface during crystal growth. The sensor data was used to characterize the initial melt state, detect the onset of nucle-ation, determine the growth velocity, and identify the shape of the interface.IntroductionSingle crystal CdTe and its solid solution Cd1-xZnxTe alloys (0.03<x<0.05) are used as infrared transparent substrates for infrared focal plane array (IRFPA) detectors [1-6] and as solid state y- ray detectors [7-9j. Cd1-xZnxTe substrates are normally ""mined"" from large polycrystalline boules grown by the unseeded directional solidification of Cd1-xZnxTe melts using either a vertical or horizontal Bridgman process [10-14]. The vertical Bridgman method is particularly popular for growing CdTe and its related compounds. In this process, a Cd1-xZnxTe ingot is produced by first melting a charge in the hot zone of the furnace and then vertically translating the furnace (with its associated axial temperature profile) relative to the stationary crucible to cause directional solidification. In spite of many experimental efforts to investigate the relationships between material purity, stoichiometry, the controllable growth parameters (furnace temperature profiles, ampoule geometries/materials, furnace translation rates and starting position) and the resulting material characteristics (grain structure, dislocation densities, IR transmission, macro-segregation etc.), the yield of Cd1-xZnxTe of a quality suitable for large area (e.g. 4 cm x 6 cm) substrates remains low (<10%). Since much of this poor yield is directly associated with the crystal growth process (e.g. melt stoichiometry, solidification velocity, interface shape, temperature gradients, cooling rate, etc.) intensive efforts are under way to improve this technology."

The papers and discussion appearing in this volume were presented at a symposium jointly sponsored by the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and held at Philadelphia, Pa., November 29, 30, and December 1, 1944. Late in January, 1944, Lieut. Col. C. H. Greenall, Officer-in-Charge of the Laboratory Division, Frankford Arsenal, Ordnance Department, U.S.A., suggested to the American Society for Testing Materials that it might be a propitious time to arrange for a symposium on stress-corrosion cracking at the Annual Meeting of the Society in June, and agreed to make available a number of papers relating to work being carried out at that Arsenal. The Society&apos;s Committee B-5 on Copper and Copper Alloys, Cast and Wrought expressed keen interest in the symposium, and other Society committees were contacted and agreed to cooperate. Since the subject is one of primary interest also to the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, it was arranged that the two organizations would jointly sponsor the symposium. A Symposium Committee was formed under the joint leadership, for A.S.T.M., of Carter S. Cole, then Chief of the Metals Branch, Conservation Division, War Production Board and now Engineer on the Headquarters Staff of the Society; and, for A.I.M.E., of E. A. Anderson, Chief of Metals Section, Research Division, New Jersey Zinc Co. (of Pa.) and chairman of the Program Committee of the Institute of Metals Division. The WTZ coal mine is located adjacent to an auxiliary dam in P. R. China. The mining-induced ground movements are calculated using a 3-D numerical procedure based on the finite difference method (FDM) to judge whether the extraction of the coal seam will have a negative impact on the dam. First, the values of the rock mass mechanical parameters in the numerical model are estimated using the available literature that relates intact rock and discontinuity properties to rock mass parameters. Then, based on available surface subsidence monitoring data for an area in WTZ mine, the main mechanical parameters of coal and rock masses are calibrated by a back analysis procedure that combines an experimental design technique with numerical simulations. Then the reliability of these rock mass parameters is verified. Finally, according to the planned mining sequence, predictions of mining induced surface subsidence are computed in steps, and the boundary of the ground movement area of each step is determined. The nearest distance from the boundary of the surface movement area to the edge of the dam foundation was found to be about 1347 m. The maximum surface subsidence within the mining area turned out to be 2.7 m, and the maximum settlement point was found to be close to west-south corner of A2 mined area. These findings led to the conclusion that the coal seam mining would not cause dam damage.

NOMENCLATURE USED IN THIS REPORT. In this report the ending ene has been used throughout, except in the bibliography and in quotations from the writings of previous investigators, for all aromatic hydrocarbons, as, for instance, benzene, toluene, xylene. The ending ol, though largely used in technical description, is not correctly applicable to these hydrocarbons, and should be used to designate the impure mixtures of commerce, as distinguished from pure chemical compounds. PRESENT STATUS OF PETROLEUM-REFINING INDUSTRY. Although petroleum is widely distributed, being found in many parts of the world, and although information as to its occurrence and general characteristics seems to have existed from vcry early times, our knowledge of the chemical nature of this substance has been acquired largely within the past 40 years. Within this period a voluminous literature has accumulated, which records work as painstaking as has ever been undertaken in the whole field of chemistry, such as that of C. M. Warren, F. H. Storer, S. P. Sadtler, S. F. Peckham, and C. F. Mabery. Despite this fact, the commercial method of treating crude petroleum for the purpose of procuring marketable products is, in the main, essentially empirical. Much knowledge has been acquired as to methods of separating from crude petroleum such products as are desirable commercially, but little has been done to attain the maximum recovery of such products.

In connection with an investigation in this laboratory on the high-zinc side of the copper-zinc system, it was observed that well developed segregate structures of the Widmansttten type were formed when a secondary phase precipitated from the solid solution of copper in zinc. This paper presents an analysis of the crystallographic relationship between the segregate and the solid solution matrix. The data to be presented are an interesting addition to the literature on segregate structures in that the plane of segregation is one of the less densely populated planes. In agreement with the generalization of C. H. Mathewson and D. W. Smith&apos; the plane of segregation in the matrix contains the direction of closest atomic packing of the lattice. Furthermore, the matrix and the segregate are both hexagonal close-packed, which has not been reported hitherto in the 1iternture.l The increasing commercial importance of zinc alloys containing copper makes this fundamental study of value to the metallography of zinc alloys. Zinoeich Copper-zinc Alloys Copper enters into solid solution with zinc to at least 1.8 per cent at 400" C., according to W. M. Peirce.3 The solubility is less at lower temperatures. Thus a solid solution of copper in zinc, saturated at an elevated temperature, will precipitate the excess copper in a separate phase at a lower temperature, conditions of concentration, time, and temperature being suitable. The nature of these two phases has been established by the X-ray method of crystal analysis. Westgren and Phmgmén4 and also Owen and Preston5 have shown that the solid solution eta (7) is of the substitu-tional type with copper atoms replacing zinc atoms on the hexagonal

Discussion of the paper of THOMAS F. DONNELLY, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1759 to 1768. F. LYNWOOD GARRISON, Philadelphia, Pa. (communication to the Secretary *).-The paper is of value in giving the public some first-hand information regarding a copper property that from various causes has attracted considerable attention, especially in Philadelphia, and which has also been the source of several fantastic flotations that had little to recommend them. Since 1906, no work has been done on this property under my direction, with the exception of a topographic survey made last winter by Mr. Donnelly, which was intended as the first step in a sound and logical system of development. From 1906 to 1915, desultory attempts were made to develop these orebodies, but as the work was not in competent hands much money was wasted and even more disappeared in ways regarding which it is perhaps not best to inquire. The result is, this interesting property has now practically no more ore developed upon it than in 1906, despite the fact that a new 100-ton mill is being erected, although, as I have intimated, it is today not much more than a prospect. Turning now to the scientific and more agreeable side of the subject, it is interesting to note that these Santo Domingo copper ores are invariably found in volcanic tuffs and that, in a geologic sense, they are all very old, for there are no evidences of recent volcanic activity in the greater Antilles, of which this island is the second largest. The existence of copper in tuffs in different parts of the world is a notable fact. Often, if not usually, it is present in mere traces, but not infrequently we find it in sufficient amount to be of economic importance. Thus, for example, chalcopyrite and bornite occur in the Tertiary tuffs of Japan, and a number of producing copper mines of that country are either actually in, or closely associated with, rocks of this character. Whether the copper minerals are original primary ores in the tuffs, or were derived from accompanying eruptive dikes, appears not yet to have been determined in any instance. In most of the Japanese cases of which I can find any record the tuffs appear to be associated with shales and limestones. These Japanese copper ores also carry some gold, especially in the upper parts of the veins; in this they resemble the Santo Domingo deposits which not infrequently carry as much as $6 or $7 per ton of gold on the outcrop. "INTRODUCTION During peacetime, the United States uses less than 3,000 tons of chemical-grade celestite annually. The war need, however, was estimated to exceed 15,000 tons a year.Hitherto; most of the required chemical-grade ore has been imported from England, Mexico, and other foreign countries. If foreign sources do not find it possible to meet the demand for ore of chemical grade (plus 92 percent SrSO4), it is expected that requirements could be satisfied by concentrating low-grade domestic ores. Celestite deposits on Brown, Nolan, Fisher, and Coke Counties, Texas, are considered to be possible sources of supply for this low-grade material. The Bureau of Mines explored the most important deposits to determine the grade and amount of ore available and conducted ore-dressing tests to obtain a suitable method of concentration.The exploratory work, consisting of test pitting and sampling, was carried on under the direction of W. E. Dennis, one of the authors of this paper, from October 8, 1942, to January 30, 1943. The ore dressing-tests described herein were conducted at the Bureau of Mines Laboratory at Rolla Mo.In this report, a particular deposit is referred to by the name of the landowner on whose .property the .deposit lies. The location of the deposits investigated is shown on figures 1, 2, 3, and 4.The celestite deposits were previously studied by the Bureau of Economic Geology of the University of Texas, and the results of its investigation are published in Mineral Survey Circular No. 46."

O estudo de recursos e caracterização de jazidas de minério de ferro é de extrema importância frente à demanda mundial deste bem mineral. A ocorrência de minério de ferro em Bodoquena, MS, desperta interesse sobre a viabilidade técnica e econômica deste recurso. A mineralização de ferro está associada à Formação Puga, caracterizada por metadiamictitos, quartzitos e filitos. Este minério de ferro possui matriz magnetítica de granulação muito fina, variando de 0,01 mm a, em raros casos, 0,2 mm, demandando moagem ultrafina para sua liberação. O beneficiamento do minério, realizado por separação magnética de baixa intensidade e flotação reversa, gerou produto magnetítico concentrado com teores de 64,9% de Fe, recuperando cerca de 47% do Fe contido e obtendo baixo teores de P (0,01- 0,04%), SiO2 (±4,5 %) e Al (±1,8%). A redução carbotérmica do minério se mostrou eficaz mediante a pelotização sem aglomerantes químicos, utilizando-se de coque de carvão mineral na composição de pelotas auto-redutoras. O produto final foi uma pelota reduzida a ferro metálico com pequenos resquícios não reduzidos e escória.

Copper slag is mainly used in cutting tools, abrasives, asphalt pavement, road construction, and in the production of concrete as an alternative to sand and cement [1]. As a renewable resource, only about 15-20 percent of the slag is used for these applications, and the dumping or disposal of surplus unused slag results in waste of a certain amount of usable metal in the feedstock [2]. In this work, the oxidation behavior of copper smelting slag under nonisothermal condition is studied using data obtained by the thermogravimetric (TG) method, and the kinetics parameters and reaction mechanism of oxidation are determined. It provides a theoretical basis for the comprehensive recovery of iron resources in slag and the selection of reasonable slag-making conditions.

[The Cartersville mining district is in Bartow County, Ga., about 40 miles northwest of Atlanta. Barite, limonite, ocher, amber, hematite, and, manganese oxide ores have been produced from the strict since about 1840. In the search for a possible source of manganese ore, Bureau of Mines engineers made a preliminary study of the district from September 1950 to January 1951. During this study 139 deposits were examined, and many mineral exposures were sampled. Manganese mineralization occurs as fine oxide and concretionary pellets in residual clays, as fine oxides in umberous clay, in brown-iron deposits, and in a limited quantity in mud ponds and Jig-tailing piles. The future supply of ferrograde manganese ore from the district, using current mining and benefication methods, appears limited to the recovery of the hard manganese ores deposits. Rough estimates indicate a reserve of manganese-bearing clays of about 8,000,000 long tons. This type of deposit has been extensively exploited and the larger deposits mined out to depths of from 50 to 200 feet. The remainder of these deposits are low grade, are covered with deep layers of colluvium, or lie below the ground-water table. Any future production from this source will require systematic prospecting, improved concentration, and an increase in the price of concentrate.]
