The structures and transformation temperatures of high-purity Fe-Cr alloys have been investigated as functions of composition (0 to 10 wt pct Cr) and rate of quenching from the high-temperature Y phase field (up to 40,000°C sec-1). The structures were chmacterized by transmission electron microscopy. The transformation temperatures for each alloy exhibited the progressive decrease to a constant value with increasing cooling rate which has been shown to be characteristic of several iron binary systems. The corresponding structures were found to become increasingly finer in scale with increasing cooling rate and solute content, but to remain essentially equiaxed in character. In all the materials except the high-purity iron and one of the alloys, an additional and lower transformation temperature than the constant value for the equiaxed structures was observed. The structures of specimens which transformed at these lower temperatures (only single thermal wrests were observed in any given run) were martensitic and consisted of arrays of fine ferrite laths which varied in size and morphology with changing solute content. The factors controlling the nature of these transformations are discussed. The composition dependence of the martensitic transformation temperature, ME, in Fe-Cr alloys together with those reported for other iron binary systems indicate that MB for pure iron is some 700°c, rather than the values of 550° and 760°C reported previously. This conclusion is further supported by the results of a compmison of the thermodynamics of mmtensite formation in several systems. ThE extensive investigations of the structures formed on athermal transformation in iron and its alloys have led to the characterization of several forms of martensitic or "military"1,2 transformations and, in addition, a "civilian7' transformation to ferrite or "equiaxed a"* which occurs athermally and at a very high rate.374

Measurements of rate of growth, thermodymmic quantities, and partitioning of Mn are reported for high-purity eutectoid Fe-C and Fe-C-Mn steels for the auistenite-pearlite reaction. Evaluztion of the cotnstants of a derived-rate equation with these data indicate that Mn additions cause the decrease observed by increasivg the activation energy and apparent activation entropy or the movenment of complexes at the interface. A diffusion-controlled mechanism is not required. Appreciable partitioning of Mn to cementite occurs entirely behind the austenite-pearlite interface for more than 30°C of subcooling. ThE growth of pearlite from austenite has been extensively studied over a period of years. but the rate-controlling step in the process is not known nor is the mechanisrn of the effect of alloying elements understood. A comprehensive review of the subject has been given by Mehl and Hagel. The present study has been concerned with further considerations of the effects of alloying elements on the rate of growth of pearlite. Analytical relatioriships for the rate of growth of pearlite have been considered by Zener.2 Turnbull,3 Machlin,4 Cahn.5 Frye,6 and Frye et a1.7 The derived expressions in each case involve the free energy of the transformation. the interlamellar spacing. and some rate term of the nature of the diffusion coefficient. mobility or frequency of occurrence of some rate-determining step. The treatments. of course. differ in detail. Further consideration is given in the present paper to the equation of Frye, Stansbury. and McElroy which was derived from modified absolute rate theory without in any way specifying the mechanism of the reaction. Subsequently, Darken, Fisher, and Galligan8 have reported that a layer of ferrite separates pearlite from austenite at the growing interface (i,e., the advancing face of Fe3C is in contact with ferrite, not austenite) and the ratio of the thickness of this layer to the spacing of the pearlite has not been found to vary with alloy content or transformation temperature. This observation does not require any alteration in the above equation: however, it may require that a different significance be attached to the factor, AT. The AT term appears in Eq. [I] as a consequence of a factor for the amount of growth per complex transformed at the interface.* It is based *This is not the sole reason for expecting such a relationship. This relation is as consistent with the data on interlamellar spacing as other relationships, although, as pointed out by Mehl and Hagel,1 the data are not sufficiently precise to consider the relationship as confirmed. THE Russellton preparation plant of Republic Steel Corp., located north of Pittsburgh, Pa., prepares 395x0-in. Thick-Freeport coal by means of a 13-ft 6-in. diam Chance cone and 16 No. 7 Deister tables. The plant feed ranges between 370 and 410 tons per hr, of which approximately 31 pct is 1/4xO-in. size, and the plant reject ranges between 14 and 16 pct of the feed.

The Jabali zinc deposit in Yemen contains at least 9.4 Mt (10.4 million st) of ore at a grade of 10.7% zinc, 2.2% lead and 77 g/t (2.2 opst) silver. The zinc occurs as smithsonite with minor hydrozincite. The Jabali ore does not produce a zinc concentrate of sufficient grade to be acceptable to a conventional zinc smelter, and it has been necessary to formulate a less-conventional development plan. This involves the construction of a mine and concentrator at Jabali and a metal production facility using a new flowsheet designed specifically for the treatment of oxide material at Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. To give the facility the necessary economies of scale, the Jabali concentrate will be supplemented by feed from other deposits, this may be either oxide or sulfide material. The paper outlines the geology and proposed mining and treatment operations at Jabali, presents the flowsheet for Yanbu and estimates preliminary costs for both operations.

This publication is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of producing uranium ore on the Colorado Plateau. The information it contains was gathered in 1955-58 and applies to eight small operations. (See fig. 1.) Mining costs have increased since the data were I collected, but the information should be helpful in estimating future costs I at similar deposits. The Bureau of Mines had early experience in the production of carnotite-type ores on the Colorado Plateau.3 4/ Under a cooperative agreement with the National Radium Institute in 1914-16, the Bureau mined and concentrated carnotite ore for recovery of radium, uranium, and vanadium. The ore was taken from claims in or near Long Park Montrose County, Colo., about 3 mi. south of La Salle Mining Co.'s La Salle mine, which is one of the mines described in this report. The Bureau leased the claims from Crucible Steel Mining & Milling Co., a subsidiary of Crucible Steel Co. of America, and from 1914 to 1916 produced 990 tons of high-grade ore, containing 2.6 pct. U308, and about 2,000 tons of mill-grade ore, containing 0.85 pct. U308. The high-grade ore was shipped directly to a radium-recovery plant built in Denver in 1914 under the cooperative agreement. There, commercial methods of extracting uranium, vanadium, and radium from carnotite ores were developed by Bureau personnel. The lower grade ore was concentrated at a small mill in Long Park before being shipped to Denver. The final recovery was 69,000 lb. of U308 and 8.8 g. of radium. The direct mining cost of producing the high-grade ore, including the labor to hand sort and sack it, was $35.96 per ton. Freighting the ore 58 miles to Placerville, Colo., the nearest rail point on the Rio Grande Southern Railway, cost $25.28 per ton, which included $4.55 per ton for ore bags and twine. A adição de nióbia foi de 6% e 8% em peso; sílica foi de 0% e 0,8% em peso; e magnésia no teor de 0% e 0,15% em peso. As amostras sinterizadas foram caracterizadas medindo-se dureza, densificação e velocidade após o impacto.Os ensaios balísticos foram efetuados colando discos cerâmicos em chapas de aço e então submetendo o alvo a impacto usando projetil 7,62 mm de um fuzil com uma distância de tiro de 5m. A energia absorvida pela fragmentação dos discos cerâmicos foi estimada pela velocidade residual.As superfícies de fratura das amostras foram observadas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Os resultados foram analisados.Verificou-se que a adição de quantidades elevadas de nióbia à alumina com presença menos significativa de sílica e magnésia pode incrementar a presença de fase vítrea nos contornos de grãos da alumina, com efeito nas propriedades do material para uso em proteção balística.

The distribution of phosphorus between solid silicon and iron-silicon melt was determined to investigate the degree of phosphorus removal from silicon by solvent refining with iron-silicon alloys. The distribution coefficient which is the ratio of the mole fraction of phosphorus in solid to that of liquid is as follows: 0.22±0.02 (1310°C), 0.29±0.02 (1260°C) and 0.33±0.02 (1210°C). The removal percentage of phosphorus is: 84.2% (1310°C), 72.5% (1260°C), and 63.7% (1210°C). The average phosphorus content of produced silicon in the proposed solvent refining process would be over two times less than that of the conventional directional solidification. The values of interaction coefficient of phosphorus on iron at different temperatures were obtained as -3460±155 (1310°C), -3595±159 (1260°C) and -3694±119 (1210°C). Self interaction parameter of phosphorus at different temperatures are as follows: 68±4 (1310 ?C), 78±10 (1260 ?C) and 103±19 (1210 ?C). The calculated values for distribution coefficient of phosphorus at infinite dilution are: 0.22±0.00 (1310°C), 0.30±0.00 (1260°C) and 0.34±0.00 (1210 °C).

"INTRODUCTION Preliminary reports by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ and by the Federal Geological Survey 4/ suggested that exploration would discover substantial reserves of minable ore in the Contact mine, Grant County, New Mexico. During February and March 1943, a sampling program was conducted on this property under the direction of the author. This was art of a general survey of the manganese districts of southwestern New Mexico.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as practicable soon as after its conclusion. The Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocer, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. S. Dean, assistant director. With respect to this report, special acknowledgment is due to C. H. Johnson, district engineer for New Mexico, and E. D. O efeito de memória de forma tem como principal objetivo a recuperação da forma por meio de aquecimento acima das temperaturas críticas de transformação. Fitas das ligas Ti50Ni46Cu4 e Ti50Ni44Cu6 (% at) foram preparadas através do processo melt spinnig com velocidade da roda de 38 m/s e 50 m/s. A caracterização das fitas foi feita por Calorimetria Diferencial de Varredura (DSC) e Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV). Foi observado que com o aumento da velocidade de rotação da roda de 38 para 50 m/s um refino de grão foi observado e as temperaturas de transformação diminuíram chegando à variação de aproximadamente 7°C. A solidificação rápida produz defeitos na estrutura da liga e, consequentemente, uma maior dificuldade de ocorrer as transformações de fase, bem como produz um refino de grão.

Although extensive pole figure studies have been reported by Brick1 and others2,3 showing preferred orientations in rolled and annealed 70-30 alpha brass, and by Hermann and Sachs4 in 70-30 alpha brass cups, comparatively little information has been published on textures in drawn 70-30 alpha brass tubes. Crampton5 reported a (110) , [111] texture in drawn brass tubes based on selected individual X ray photograms following the method of Norton and Hiller,6 but the extent and ease of developing this texture and the annealing texture have not been reported and pole figures of these structures were not found in the literature. The present investigation was further stimulated by the possible influence of textures on the mercury stress-corrosion cracking of brass tubes. According to Snoek,7 iron-nickel alloy sheet with a strong cubic texture was more resistant to corrosion than a randomly oriented sheet. Crampton5 reported that single crystals of 70-30 alpha brass drawn into tubes did not crack after 24 hr in a standard mer-curous nitrate test. Edmunds12 found that single crystals of 70-30 alpha brass did not crack in a standard mercurous nitrate test but did crack when subjected to ammoniacal vapor. Wasserman11 reported a similar failure of a single crystal of brass in ammonia. A tube with a strong texture might approach single crystal behavior and tend to resist mercury cracking if the differences in orientation between adjacent grains were sufficiently slight. Preparation OF Specimens Crampton's5 tubes drawn 28 pct reduction in area developed a slight degree of preferred orientation while in tubes drawn 48 pct it was more marked. Based on this information, in order to obtain specimens with markedly different degrees of preferred orientation but with the same final draw, two sets of 70-30 alpha brass tubes were made following the mill schedules shown in Table I. The final draw involved a large reduction in outside diameter, and a ratio of reduction in area to reduction in outside diameter similar to that reported by Crampton,5, 10 to cause mercury cracking of brass tubes. The brass contained 71.31 pct copper, 0.01 pct lead, 0.01 pct iron and zinc by difference. Determination of Pole Figures A 6-in. length from each tube was rotated rapidly by an electric stirrer in 25 pct nitric acid until the gauge was reduced to 0.003-0.005 in. The tubes were carefully cut longitudinally and the walls gently flattened. They were further etched in 25 pet nitric acid to 0.0015 in. thickness and (111) pole figures were determined using copper K-alpha radiation in the manner described by Brick.' This paper, describing the mining practices at the Pilares mine, Pilares de Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts. At present (1930) practically all the mineral production from the Nacozari district is from the Pilares mine of the Moctezuma Copper Co., a subsidiary of the Phelps Dodge Corporation. The ore is mined for its copper but contains associated silver in small quantities.

It is usually assumed that the rate-determining step in the migration of a grain boundary involves the thermally activated transfer of single atoms across the interface. Chemical reaction rate theory then gives a migration rate which is proportional to the driving force when this is small compared to kT.1 In their recrystallization studies on aluminum, Gordon and vandermeer2 obtained data which was capable of providing the first experimental test of this proportionality. They correlated stored energy (driving force) release measurements determined calorimetrically with fraction recrystal-lized kinetic (growth rate) data acquired metallo-graphically at a temperature where a significant amount of recovery takes place concurrently with recrystallization. Within experimental error, the results of Gordon and Vandermeer confirmed experimentally, at least over a limited range, the linear dependence of boundary migration (growth) rate on driving force in accordance with theory. In obtaining these results, however, an incorrect, implicit assumption was made in relating the average instantaneous growth rate of the recrystallized grains to the measured fraction recrystallized kinetic data. The purpose of this present note is to point out and correct this assumption. An alternate approach, whereby a more proper average growth rate can be calculated from the recrystallization kinetic data, is presented. The earlier data, reevaluated in terms of this new approach, show the same general trend as before so that the original conclusion of Gordon and vandermeer2 is still valid. As was shown in a detailed study3 of the geometrical features of recrystallization in aluminum, the colonies of recrystallized grains can be regarded as uniform cylinders embedded in a three-dimensional matrix, the number of such colonies being constant. Thus during the early stages of recrystallization the volume fraction recrystallized, Xv, can be written as Xv=ynvlr2 [l] where y is a shape factor and i and r are defined as the average length and radius of a recrystallized colony and are spatial averages over the specimen. -nv, is the number of such colonies in a unit of volume. Heat capacity measurements of anhydrous cobalt sulfate (CoSO4), copper sulfate (CuSO4), nickel sulfate (NiSO4), and zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) were conducted over the temperature range 51° to 298° K. The results were used to evaluate the following entropies at 298.15° K (cal/deg mole): CoSO4, 28.1; CuSO4, 26.8; NiSO4, 24.8; and ZnSO4, 26.4. Entropies were combined with heats of formation to give free energies of formation.

Introduction In the past fifteen years, bentonite production in the United States has increased very rapidly. From l50,000 tons in l934, it rose to 400,000 tons in l 942 and to a record 920,000 tons in 1948. Occurrences of bentonite ?in western Canada were described in the early part of the century by Ries and Keele (3), Ells (2), Spence (4). and other officer of the Dominion Department of Mines, and, in Saskatchewan, Professor W. G. Worcester (6), of the University of Saskatchewan has explored and carried out tests on deposits of the material at various times during the past thirty years. Nevertheless, Canadian developments have not kept pace with those in the United States. Exact figures for total Canadian production are not released, but it is probably under l0,000 tons annually. There are a great number of uses for bentonite, but in the United States three alone account for 90 per cent of the consumption. These are for drilling gel, foundry sand bond, and oil decolorizer. The tremendous oil exploration programme on the Canadian prairies has increased the possibility of an adequate domestic market for drilling gel. Therefore, in Saskatchewan, our efforts have been directed mainly to the production of a good drilling gel, with a minor part of the project devoted to activation of bentonites for oil decolorizing.

INTRODUCTION Hydrometallurgical processes for the extraction of metal values can be divided into two broad categories: (a) Processes involving the treatment of high grade material (e.g. finely divided mineral concentrates); and (b) processes which treat lower grade material (ores, waste dumps, etc.). This discussion will be directed primarily toward the first category, but in either case a fundamental knowledge of the intrinsic kinetics and thermodynamics is necessary to understand the behavior of the system. The bulk of research efforts in the last decade along these lines has been aimed at the recovery of copper (1-8). However much information has also been reported on uranium (9, 10) , zinc (11) , cobalt and nickel (12, 13). More comprehensive reviews on these areas are also available (14). As discussed by Sepulveda and Herbst (15, 16) one of the most difficult problems facing process designers is the acquisition and scale-up of reliable information concerning the intrinsic kinetics of leaching systems. The scale-up or modeling of these multiparticle systems is far more complex than that of homogeneous ones. This is due to the numerous rate determining steps which are possible with heterogeneous reactions and the broad distribution of properties of a multiparticle feed such as particle size and mineralogical composition (16). In addition, other factors must also be considered such as interactions between particles, the anisotropic nature of individual particles, the effect of solution chemistry, and electrochemical phenomena. All of these factors must be taken into account, often simultaneously. The thrust of this paper will be to more closely examine how the factors mentioned above can be treated. To meet the growing need for CO2 capture and storage technology, Michigan Technological University is researching CO2 capture and storage using carbonate solutions. The objective of the present study was to increase the absorption rate of CO2 into the carbonate solution without reducing the absorption capacity of the solution. This approach used a polypropylene glycol methyl ether (PPGME) as a surfactant to chemically alter the gas bubble size. Experiments were conducted to study the absorption rate of CO2 at varying surfactant concentrations of 0, 0.12, 0.24, 0.36 and 0.48 g/L. Results showed that as the concentration of surfactant increased in solution, the absorption rate also increased. The CO2 absorption rate increased from 3.45 mmol/min CO2 at 0 g/L PPGME to 3.92 mmol/min CO2 at 0.48 g/L PPGME. This amounted to a 14% increase in the CO2 absorption rate with no decrease in absorption capacity of the solution.

Most State enacting bodies have deemed it necessary to specify a maximum speed at which men may be hoisted or lowered in mine shafts. Since most mine cages are not closed in, as are passenger elevators in office buildings, and since, ordinarily, neither the starting tin g nor stopping of the cage is as general as that of these elevators, such regulations are all the more necessary for the comfort and safety of the men. It is also quite generally recognized that it is dangerous to over-crowd cages. Hence, a number of States have limited the number of men that may be on cage at one time.
